I'm after a prestige class from Scoundrel.

I'd also like a small handful of feats from Divine and Champion. And two from Heroes of Battle.

I think my supplemental book collection has left me spoiled.

Subject: Another question...

But first, an answer to your question.
"What are you playing?"
I'm putting together a paladin who, after 4th level, has a caster level equal to half of his paladin level.
His base allotment of spells per day is 0 at 5th level, so after bonus spells he has 1 spell per day to use.
He only has access to 1st level spells at this point.

Now on to my question.
I finished putting the character together and began working on equipment. The first thing I went after was a Mithril Breastplate and the tag on that thing, according to the magic item compendium, is 4,200gp. It was about here that I remembered something about a limit on the amount spent on individual items so I came back here to check the creation rules before doing any more shopping.

No more than 25% of 9000 cap on a single item.

Oh well. No breastplate for me. Moving on.... wait a minute. 25% of 9000 means no more than 2250 spent on any item. The cheapest magic weapon is a +1 dagger coming in @ 2302gp, just above the limiter.

I assume the limit is to keep us from pouring all the money into one or two really powerful items. Did +1 weapons get caught by accident, or is this all part of your devious plan for our characters?

I've never used a magic pool system before and am a little lost trying to figure out how many MP the character should have.

If CL is 2, relevant ability modifier is 4, has access to 1st level spells and has 1 spell/day...

...does he have 10MP?

If that's right I think I might have it. If that's wrong I'm completely lost.

Subject: Talus has some issues

"I will come back."
"Or we will, if Linnix wishes to come." Aelistae added. “We have been through too much together, I think, for ties of friendship to be dissolved so easily.”

Linnix raised an eyebrow at her friend, "What do you mean 'if I wish to come'?" she asked. "Of course I'm coming with you!"

"What about you Dylan? Will you accompany me to see the kobolds?" inquired the warlock. "I think you'd be..." Talus realized his choice of words and couldn't help but let out a half snorting chuckle. "Sorry. The pun wasn't intended. But I do think you'd be the best face-man for this encounter. I lack your skill in speech craft and would surely doom and chance of peaceful relations if this tribe is as hostile as reports say they are."

((Leaving space for Dylan's response))

Turning to the head of the table, Talus addressed the keep's Lord, "And what about your new mage, ah... Bron...something, has she taken your offer of a place in your court yet? I've not seen her this morning.... Already send her off on a mission needing special arcane expertise?"

His voice grew more vitriolic as he went on and he knew it. He held no ill feelings toward the girl, but Talus remembered well Bartholomew's words in extending her welcome, "Brownyn, we have not mage amongst our ranks..." and nothing raised the warlocks ire more than being overlooked or ignored now that he was actually trying to fit in with society.

Talus dropped to his seat, biting his tongue before he could escalate to yelling at either Bartholomew or Bronwyn's specter.

Topic: Forgotten Realms: the Unsung Heroes Q/A
Subject: a little cut & paste

EDIT: this post was originally a rant that didn't actually answer your question about how to make stuff with that shiny lab you're setting up. So without further ado...

the crunchy side of alchemy; a walkthrough.

say you want a flask of alchemist's fire. its listed price is 20gp, and its craft DC is 20.

so... you'd spend 6.67gp (1/3 of 20) on raw materials before making your first craft(alchemy) check.

Hopefully you got a 16 or better, or your chance at making a profit selling this thing just went down the drain, or evaporated, or whatever. In any case, a 15 or worse means half of your raw materials are ruined and now you have to spend 3.33gp to make up for that bad batch.

Say you got a result of 20 on that first roll. Woot. Take your result and multiply it with the craft DC... 400. Compare that with the price of the item in silver pieces (200, btw) to see how much progress you made this week.

Since 400>200, you're finished. In fact, you finished in half the time because of how much you exceeded your target number. If you had been trying to make an item whose price in sp had been 2000, you'd still have three more weeks of work at that rate of progress.

Ok, congrats on completing your first flask of alchemist's fire. Now off to market. It's price is 20g, so it'll sell for 10. You paid 6g 67s for it, so you'll net a profit of 3g 33s.

That number is familiar, isn't it? It's what you'd pay if you fail the craft check by 5 or more. So fail once and you break even, fail more than once and you're in the red for that item.

Of course this is all assuming strict adherence to the rules as written. It's always possible that Kaelyn could work out some special case something or other with you.

Subject: Talus - EDIT

Talus returned to his seat with the new garment folded in his hands. He planned to spend a few minutes tonight thoroughly examining both the cloak and it's clasp for any hints of arcane modifications. Elendil reappeared in the doorway a short time later, her eyes set with determination and an intense look on her face.

"My Lord," Elendil started, "there is a silver dun mare of Elven blood in the corral, I wish to purchase her."

This distraction, coupled with Firin's arrival moments later, was exactly the opportunity Talus thought he was going to have to wait hours for. While everyone else was bartering, the warlock let his vision become sensitive to connections with the Weave.

Now for the cloak, and discovering what Lord Bart was trying to pull over on his court.

Nothing.

No enchantment. No transmutation. No magical signature at all.

Talus had some reevaluating to do. He made a few quick inquiries with Firin and excused himself from the council. Half the walk back to his room was spent fussing with just how the cloak sat on his shoulders.

~~~~~
As Bart was detailing the last assignment, Talus was imagining walking through the forest on the road again, the birds singing somewhere overhead in their mating rituals, and no cares other than making sure the wagon behind him gets to where ever it's going. The keep was safe, sure, but the road was peaceful.
“I’ll go with the caravan,” Aelistae offered, almost before the final words had left Bart’s mouth. “I have some…matters to attend to in the Omlarundin mountains..."
The warlock let out a longing sigh as the beams of sunlight cutting through the trees twisted into damp stalactites, the curving road into a musty cave and the distant chirping morphed into a high pitched barking echoing off the cold stone.
"Kobolds it is then. I won't be much help with the talks, since I can't speak whatever it is that yapping thing is they do, but if things go south I can definitely help blast our way back out... especially if they favor javelins and the like. I'll need some help if things actually go the way we want them to."
Addressing Aelistae, he continued, "I think it's a good idea to double up on the caravan guard. Sure, it's not just you on the way out and you'll have the company of the merchants, but we're only responsible for a fraction of their route. Any dangers the Queen wants you guarding her caravan from will still be there after the supplies are through and you're on your way back here."
"I don't believe it would be wise to clear the mines with anything but our full attention. We do not know how deep the shafts run nor if it is solely goblins that are using them for shelter. Do we even know if the mines are structurally sound?" Talus asked. As he discussed the mines, he tried to sign to Aelistae, and though his grasp of the drow silent language had progressed much in the last week, most of his focus was on ensuring his spoken lines of thought remained clear to the group. His hand gestures suffered greatly for it.
"You ... are return. No. Disembark... Say farewell."
Unfortunately, for both the warlock and the priestess, he couldn't pay enough attention to what he was saying to realize that he wasn't paying enough attention to what he was saying and almost none of the meaning actually got across.
Purchase and layaway requests for Firin:
I would like to buy some Gloves of Eldritch Admixture if he can acquire them...
And send him out to find a pair of gloves of object reading and a warlock's scepter, to be purchased as soon as I have the money.
After the purchase I should have 875g left (including the 100gp gem and assuming I can subtract correctly)
Kaelyn, could you post the drawing / map of the keep to the Base of Operations thread once we get to a place where we're actively building & remodeling? I'm having a hard time keeping the layout of the place in my mind.
Also, I'm sending Talus' level 6 character sheet to you again, I think it got lost in the mail while you were away for the Holidays. We did level, right? Or did I put a bit too much rum into the eggnog a couple weeks ago?
"What I’m getting at people is here, now, the opportunities for the future are endless. We have an opportunity to carve into Tethyr, nay all of Toril a place unlike any other..."
He's granted the title of "Lord", given more money than he has probably ever dreamed of before, set in a place of power over men... Sir Bartholomew has most assuredly been show the path of corruption. Has he already begun to follow it? His first public act was to commemorate his victory with that finely crafted Liberty Bell and it's mural immortalizing his ascent into this new-found position.
Now he's offering us all a place beside him in this new order. Is it like he said in the bailey, does he truly believe that credit should be shared between us? Or is this a ploy to keep those who lifted him up nearby to keep the pedestal steady?
Aelistae was the first to stand and accept the cloak Lord James was offering. "This is what the Dark Lady teaches..."
I want to believe that Bart hasn't changed from the kind farmer I knew out on the road. That wasn't that long ago, maybe he... No. He's acting now like the sort of person my parents would have associated with, the kind that...
Artanis, why did you really leave? Did you and Intella discover something this last tenday that prevented you from staying?
Talus reexamined Bartholomew's words in this new light. As part of of his lure to entice this new girl, Bronwyn, to stay and become a part of the Scarlet Rose he had said that "we have not mage amongst our ranks." Was that be the beginnings of a plot to force the warlock from the group in the same way the newly appointed Lord had expelled Artanis? He couldn't be sure, but Talus was finally starting to make friends with some of the others and he wouldn't be run out so easily. Just the other night he's asked Aelistae if she would mind teaching him the Elven language. She had seemed glad to share her knowledge with him, and as their conversations continued he found that he as willing to tell her about Mulhorand and its people.
A pang of guilt interrupted Talus' thoughts. He'd developed somwhat of a crush on Artanis, but had lacked the courage to act on it, even avoiding talking to her in some cases out of a fear of embarrassing himself. And now she was gone. Gone either to fight demons from her past, or to escape something evil in this room. He regretted never letting Artanis know how he felt and wished he could chase after her now and pull her from the fire again. But what was happening here, in this room, held too strong a pull over the conflicted young man. He'd spent over a year on the road, fleeing his home and the drunken stupor caused by too-much power. And now, here, he had the perfect chance to study it's corrupting affects from the onset, even knowing the man before he had power.
This was too good to pass up, so saying a quick prayer for Artanis' well-being to whatever Beings might be listening, the warlock followed Aelistae in accepting the cloak and position Lord Bartholomew James offered.
"I accept your, most generous, offer... in the spirit with which it is given, M'Lord. I had originally intended only to aid you in your quest to rid this outpost of the filth that had overrun its walls before heading back out onto the road again to find what may be found. These new developments and the founding of your new Order promise to be much more interesting than anything that could be found out in the wastes. I am with you."
Talus bowed slightly, not breaking eye contact with Bart, and returned to his seat with the new garment folded in his hands. He'd need a few minutes to examine the object before he'd feel comfortable wearing the thing. And he'd need a few more years before he'd feel comfortable about following any advice given by his father.
"Never trust anything that could be connected to the weave until you either understand that connection or you sever it."
From a rooftop in the northwest corner of the keep, Talus watched another caravan arrive. He found it was odd that this spot had become his favorite place to pass the day as this was almost exactly where Bolikar had appeared to rally his forces and nearly crushed Atharam's squire. It was also one of the few places inside the walls where a person could be guaranteed some peace and relative quiet, even with the bad memories it conjured up in the warlock. More and more troops had been arriving ever since Bartholomew had sent word to the Tethyrian Queen that the keep had been retaken. Troops and equipment and craftsmen and supplies. The place was getting cramped.
The first night after defeating Bolikar had been so much more pleasant. Sure, there was a great deal of tension between Aelistae and the other elf, Elendil, and it pulled in some of the others. But for Talus, he left the squabbles over shares literally behind him as he spread his bedroll in a corner of the south gentry and fell asleep with a smile on his face; he'd helped his friends today.
He awoke early, that first morning, donned his enchanted monocle and methodically swept the courtyard for anything that emanated signs of magic. He left Bolikar and the Drow's possessions for last. It took several minutes for Talus to work up the nerve to study Bolikar's axe, Skullsplitter, with enough detail to discern its magical properties. It was physical manifestation of the natural desire for power and control taken to extreme and unnatural ends. The warlock wanted to destroy the cruel weapon, he even tried to shatter it as he had done to so many weapons the night before, but while a goblin club was a simple thing to unbind, this axe was held together, in part, by the weave. It was beyond his power.
He hated it, for it was a sign of where unchecked lust for power could lead. He could not destroy it without first seeking some way to enhance his own power. The contradiction left a sour taste in his mouth. Dropping the axe, he stalked off to scour the interior of the keep, hoping that there were a few goblins left that had fled inside instead of out into the night. Goblins he could destroy.
*****
The nomad wanted, needed, to leave. Too many people in too small a space. Give him a simple walking stick, some half-way decent weather, and an unknown road over the bustle going on in the keep. And the Queen was coming, bringing with her an entourage and packing even more bodies into this already too-full keep. He should have left as soon as the first of the garrison had arrived, but Bart wanted everyone to stay until the Queen arrived, "It would be an honor," he had said, and Talus had agreed. He'd taken to sleeping up on the rooftops, where he didn't feel quite so closed in, but the urge to get away from this newest spot of civilization was getting harder to resist. He was glad the queen would be here tomorrow.
That the woman had completely disregarded his order to dismiss her invisibility made Talus nervous. Her companion still had her sword drawn and the argument between the elf and Linnix was even more heated now that Aelistae was up and adding her voice to the commotion. The warlock feared another fight wasn't too far away.
“Bronwyn, reveal yourself!”
Afraid that an ambush was forthcoming, Talus readied an Eldritch Blast to throw at the invisible mage should she begin canting a spell.
“As soon as he is able, we will leave. We were not in the forefront of the fighting....”
Breathing a sigh of relief the warlock dismissed the arcane energy he had summoned and circled back toward Artanis. The elf and her magic-wielding friend were making him too jumpy and now one of the knights had joined the argument group with his hand on the hilt of his sword. Checking on Artanis and Xaris seemed the only safe place to be right now.
Yes, he can.
See the Unseen
Least Invocation; 2nd level spell equivalent
When you use this invocation, you can activate great powers of vision, allowing you to see invisible creatures and objects (as see invisibility). You also gain darkvision out to 60 feet for a period of 24 hours.
He re-cast See the Unseen on himself just prior to running from the tree-line to the gate. See invisibility for him would have a duration of 50 minutes (70 if he cast it again after the level-up) and should still be active.
Talus stood in a state of disbelief. Bolikar had nearly killed Xaris in a only a few seconds and for as powerful as that had made the giant seem, he hadn't lasted much longer than that under our assault. The bigger they are... or something like that. He watched Aelistae tap Xaris a few times with her wand without the panic she'd had while trying to get to the fallen gnome and smiled, if that was true, Xaris would never fall very hard at all.
Whoever those knights were they seemed, for the moment, to be friendly. They hadn't struck against the 'evil drow in our midst', so maybe the fight was really over. Maybe not.
Someone was sneaking along the inner wall of the keep. Or trying to sneak. The woman's movements drew too much atention to herself, almost like she expected everyone to be too distracted to look in her direction.
"Hey Linnux, who's that..." Talus tried to get the rogue's attention, but she had found another newcomer, this one picking her way through the goblin corpses to the dead Drow.
"Hold it." Linnix called, "Just who are you, and what do you think you're doing here?"
She's got that one. Why doesn't anyone else seem to see this other one? They're acting like she's invisible.... oh.
Repressing the urge to slap his forehead, the warlock began picking his way over the bodies in a path that would put him near the invisible woman, who was now kneeling near a pile of dead goblinoids fiddling with her belt.
"Elendil, I need help with Fate." The woman calls out.
Fate? The fate of what? Linnix is confronting what I assume is this "Elendil" and none of the others are in much shape for continued fighting. Are these two in league with the knights? ... Those knights are right next to Artanis and the others!
"You! I can see you. Dismiss your illusion and let the rest see you! Like we asked of your colleague, who are you and what are you doing?"
I think that "-and his army" part is key there. If it was just the raging ogrillion barbarian against our gnome, poor Bolikar wouldn't stand a chance.
And thank you, Reralae, for your post. That's the first time I've been glad to have to rewrite half of my planned post. I didn't know how Talus was going to stay in the fight until Linnix called his name.
