Subject: Got a bad feeling about this

The hairs on the entrances bothered Dapple, though she couldn’t precisely say why. It seemed so…stagey, almost. While useful for letting you know if someone had entered your rooms or rifled through your things, such a minor signal seemed silly in this context. If you’d sealed the place up so tight that the priests couldn’t leave, would you really want to come all the way up the mountain to check if anyone “dropped in”?

Arien decided that a straightforward approach was best, and Dapple simply shrugged and melted off to the side as the warriors prepared to enter. She’d done her job, now the others would earn their silver. She watched closely, though, blinking and repressing a start when the doors flew open, and so noted the single hair rise up and vanish into thin air. Something’s just learned of our arrival hissed the dead voice within her, and Dapple nodded to herself.

As the others entered the hall, Dapple slipped among them, finding the shadows and melting into their embrace. Her only willing lover, she let the darkness touch her and fill her, leaving her more alive then when hiding in sunlight. The bodies of the priests drew her attention, but, like the hair, she was bothered not so much by their deaths, but the seemingly artificialness of their repose. If something wanted her to be focused on the priests, she decided, then she would pay attention to everything else, and so she began a careful circuit of the room, looking for anything hidden in the gloom.

Arien, like the others, was fixated by the priests, but when he explained his thoughts to the others, Dapple nodded approvingly. As much as he seemed distracted earlier, he was alert now, and had put his finger on what had been bothering Dapple about the bodies.

The childish laughter stopped her in her tracks, however, every hair on her body rising and her eyes opening wide. Embarrassed by her fright, Dapple told the others about the hair vanishing upon their entrance, her voice roughened by the tightness in her throat.

Willow hugged Darla back – the obvious sympathy and well-wishes from the woman were a balm to Willow’s ragged nerves.

“Take care of yourself, honey, and don’t let the sheriff blame for none of this trouble,” Willow finally managed, then left with Benny.

They hadn’t gotten very far when the sheriff’s voice rose into the air. “Well what do we have here? Captain, your man here has machine pistols ready in a park where there are woman and children. Please make him rack and pin them or I will drop him where he stands.”

Willow stopped at those words, her heart sinking and her eyes closing. “Please, please, run-tse duh FWO-tzoo , let that not be “my” Captain,” she breathed, but knowing that it just had to be. She waited, wringing her hands as part of her told her to run towards the sheriff, but more of her told her to run in the opposite direction. When she didn’t hear any gunfire, she let out her breath and nodded to Benny to keep going.

“I don’t think we need to add to the confusion…hmm? Tell me, how did such a sorry bit of tin become sheriff here, anyway? Nobody else showed up for the interview?”

Subject: To the pain!

Backpost When the bard had reached out a hand and spoke to Sunset, Dapple narrowed her eyes and palmed a dagger, ready to launch it if it appeared that he was trying to bewitch the little dragonet. She felt Sunset tense on her shoulder, and similarly tensed, beginning the wrist flick that would ruin the bard’s sight when he himself suddenly froze, eyes wide as if struck between the eyes.

Just as it had started, it ended: Caicher blinked and staggered a little and Dapple smothered a nasty laugh. Sunset was perfectly capable of defending herself, and it served the bard right for trying to charm the wild creature.

She dismissed the matter from her mind and told the others what she thought of Sunset’s “warding” behaviour, when the bard spoke up as if she’d addressed him. “Doing, done, or will do,” Caicher mocked her uncertainty, smiling smugly at dragonet and Dapple. “My guess is all three, lad… with great determination and good cause… All of you are her life, you must realize, and her reason for being. She loves you deeply and will ever do for you what you have done for her.”

Dapple snorted derisively, her hackles up despite her determination to remain cold and detached. “Sunset knows she’s not bound to us, she’s free for the first time in her life. And as for love….” She bit of her words and turned to stalk away, hiding a grimace as pain gripped her chest and belly. As she did so, the dead voice within rebuked her.

Shut up, little monster, a bard’s words are his weapons, and you give him yours to use against you. As if anything could possibly love a soulless monster like you! Ignore him and he’ll forget you. A well-heeled noble to line his palm with silver will divert his attention soon enough….

After that, Dapple did her level best to be unnoticeable. She didn’t speak unless spoken to, and sometimes not even then. (One town elder, trying to make small talk, retreated into embarrassed confusion after being stared down by cold grey eyes surrounded by obvious, if fading, bruises. The others ignored her.) She ate with a single-minded purpose of a teen boy with a hollow leg, pausing only to offer tidbits to Sunset curled in her usual place around her neck. When she couldn’t possibly eat more and still be able to stay awake (and indeed, Sunset whiffled dragonet snores against one ear), she slipped out of the room to stretch her legs and breathe freely away from the eyes of others.

Present time The journey to the temple was accomplished with no further incident, and Dapple slid off her horse as soon as the creature stopped, preferring to be on her own feet after such a difficult ride up. Dapple was an experienced rider from her previous life, though she took pains to hide it, but even she struggled to not fight her horse’s head on some of the trickier parts. She looked back at Kilgim’s sweating face atop a cross pony and grimaced in sympathy.

The doors loomed above them and with no sign of the priests coming to greet them, Dapple sighed to herself.

“No, everyone, don’t stir yourselves. Let me do it,” she stated drily, and began to make her cautious way up the steps. Each riser was taken only after it was scrutinized carefully and gingerly pressed to assess both its strength and its absence of traps. The doors themselves underwent a similar, careful scrutiny before a small, well wrapped bundle of tiny tools was laid out. Tugging off her gauntlets and tucking them safely into her belt, the little thief crouched at the lock and began her careful work, using ears and touch more than eyes.

“So. 750 in platinum sounds good to me.”

Willow blinked a few times as Benny’s words drifted past her. She’d just had a gun pointed at her by a man who’d been trying to bed her, had a shotgun go off close enough that she felt spent gunpowder settle on skin and hair, then have another gun pointed at her by a supposed officer of the law. She’d started to rise in reaction to the sight of James’ blood, but the gun barrel aimed at her throat stopped her cold. The sheriff’s casual brutality also shocked Willow into near catatonia; she who had been sheltered for most of her life.

“What fresh kind of hell is this place?” she whispered before drawing a shuddering breath. She sees Benny looking at her out of the corner of her eye and recalls the last thing he’d said to her. “For the piece? Ah…yes, yes, indeed – if you don’t mind walking me back to my ship for payment.” Her words started out faintly but gained strength as Willow regained some of her composure. The hand that rose to fix her hair was steady, but her lips trembled and she was slo to rise, unsure of her legs.

As Benny and Willow left the bar (OOC: assuming Benny agrees to do so) Willow suggested,” Let’s not take any route that goes past the jail, shall we? I don’t think we want to encounter the sheriff again until we have our stories straight. As far as I am concerned, I just wanted a drink and James offered to escort me. I have no idea what the silly boy thought he might be trying to buy from you, but I believe you were just as confused as I was…hmm? Is there anything else someone might try to buy from you? And what is it,” Willow continued with some asperity,” with that lawman? Does he have you all paying protection money, or just the saloon owners? Who happen to be women?”

When the shotgun went off, it was all Willow could do to not shriek. In fact, it was only the fear that nearly immobilized her that stopped the sound in her throat. A quick glance told her James was still alive; Darla was as good a shot as she was a seductress, apparently.

“Darla, honey, don’t be aiming that cannon at me!” Willow finally managed through a tight throat and chattering teeth. She was wondering how to talk both Darla and James into calming down when an older man charged into the bar, guns ready and gold star shining a beacon of hope to Willow’s frightened eyes.

Under such circumstances, there were only three things a well bred lady could do. Fainting or dissolving into hysterics, while appealing, wouldn’t let her try to control the situation, and could backfire under these ticklish circumstances. Really, option 3 was the only one left. Willow burst into tears. Glorious, diamond sparkling tears began to trickle down her face as her shoulders and bosom hitched with little sobs.

“Oh my! Thank all the stars! Sheriff? You can’t imagine how terrified I’ve been! “ Willow still remained where she was, hands held up in the classic pose of surrender, but she deftly tugged a lace handkerchief from her sleeve and dabbed delicately at her eyes.

There were times when Dapple wished for the ability to slow time, and this was one of them. Too much was happening all at once, and the little thief was still too rattled by her earlier experiences to take it all in.

Arien had completely ignored her insistence on payment, and that bothered her. To override her and dismiss her concerns was almost to be expected of the high minded noble, but to act as if she hadn’t even spoken was odd. Was he just being more contrary than usual or was there more to it?

Then there was Adrian’s theory of what was happening. She’d seen open confusion and bafflement on the faces of some of the others, but she felt as if she almost understood what Adrian was saying. Almost. She longed for the time and privacy to work with pen and parchment, drawing out the timeline for herself, but things were moving too fast. She wasn’t sure what she could do about it, anyway, other than be even more on her guard than usual.

Then there was the bard, Flynn. Bad enough to be foisted with a new “companion”, but this was one was nosy by profession. She was still uncomfortable around Adrian and Maximus, but they’d seemed to at least accept her at face value, and didn’t care enough to learn ‘the lad’s” background. She could already tell by his openly curious face that he’d be pestering them all with questions. There was something he’d said when protesting his ability to defend himself, though…what was it that had bothered her….

!!!!!! Dapple had a moment’s notice to brace herself before sharp little claws scrabbled across skin and leather and the pseudodragon emerged from her hiding pace around Dapple’s neck. Sunset stiffened, sending her claws into Dapple’s flesh, but the thief bore the minor pain, more concerned about the little dragonet’s behaviour. The little creature then launched herself at Char, then Arien, and Dapple again felt a brief sadness at the creature’s obvious difficulty at what should have been effortless.

“Is there something wrong with your familiar?” Relg asked as Sunset returns to Dapple and her hiding place. A brief touch of warm scales and tiny skull horns assured her that Sunset was calming but … vigilant? Listening? Warding?

"I believe lunch would be best served quickly... we don't want to delay. Forces are at work here that we cannot contend with absent the aid of the priests," Adrian commented, clearly wanting to be on his way.

“She’s protecting us, or she was, “Dapple finally responded, speaking more to Char and Maximus, shaking her head at their defensive stances. ‘It’s hard to tell if this is something she’s doing, or done, “ Dapple glanced at Adrian with a raised eyebrow, “or will do. Remember how those demons seemed to know us, but got some things wrong? Maybe that was Sunset.”

Willow’s eyes widened slightly as Benny told them about the piece, but fortunately, both men were too distracted to really notice. If the piece belonged to Benny’s grandfather, then Benny and Lao Tsu were either half brothers or cousins. Willow began to wonder if she’d been sent for the chess piece or Benny himself, but in reviewing her conversation with the old Shepherd, she had to conclude that the piece itself was the goal. Still, it was something to think about.

Well, “Benny interrupts her thoughts, “Are you two bidding against each other? Because if you are, I think the Lady here presents a more attractive figure.” He laughs loudly and wipes his mouth on his sleeve.

“No!” Jimmy says with an edge and shoots a look at Willow that suggests he’d like her to be quiet, “It is just me making an offer.”

“Indeed,” Willow responded archly, making a little pout at James’ direction,” I couldn’t possibly want to buy something without seeing it. But if James is willing to throw money around…” she shrugged, and let her gaze fall away, then muttered almost as if sulking.

“Overdressed momma’s boy knows little beyond his behind.” OOC: Spoken in Chinese, couldn’t find what I was looking for online.

No really, I love all the little details added like the dice and the DM sheet, and the interplay between characters is growing more real with each strip.

As for reddit - the trend in webcomics is quick hit jokes, so a serial storyline is hard on the ol'attention span.

Pardon me, but Twitter's back up...

Willow studied Benny as he gradually shook off sleep and exchanged words with James. The workman’s clothes suited him better than the shabby dinner jacket, so he wasn’t like that fellow, Arthur. No, Benny had likely always been a little down on his luck.

“What’s your story lady because he doesn’t look your type and you look like your story would be a whole lot more interesting?” Benny had turned his attention to Willow and she took a sip of the truly awful whisky to hide her astonishment. Not a man of means, former or otherwise, but clearly not stupid, and worldly enough to recognize a dressed down Companion.

“I’m sure I don’t know what you mean by “my type” , Xiau-san, “ she laughed demurely, eyes looking down modestly before returning Benny’s direct gaze with one of her own. “But I am not “with” Jimmy here so much as I needed an escort. I’m interested in hearing about this luck piece of yours, however, it sounds interesting. How did you come by it?”

Tann, you like to swap players in and out of a game, and that works for you, but you need players that accept NOT being the creators of their characters. Personally I can't do it, as a whole, which is why I've struggled with Peter (frankly, if you had access to his background, you'd see he's something of a jerk, and I was trying to redeem him - oh well).

I wouldn't criticise a DM for his preferred style if I want to continue joining his games...just sayin'.

There are a number of players in this game, and only three posted in the last little while, including one with the least amount of free time (me)...so I think it is the players who killed the game, Alacrity just filled out the death certificate.

Since I can't rely on the notification process, I don't use it...personally, it only takes a minute to check the forums and see if a thread has updated. I know it can get frustrating to check , and check and see no updates, but hey, that's when you start nagging fellow players in the Q&A thread

Alacrity, you know I struggled with this character, and clerics always take me a little longer to draft a post (I remain unimpressed with clerical spells as a whole, not enough meat on the bone)but I will continue on if we suddenly get some posts from the others.
