Subject: A beginning

The noise from the bar’s patrons and the now repaired jukebox washed over the woman called Angela Ryan. She may have known the song once, but not now, just as she may have known some of the barflies, or not. It didn’t matter, today. Today was all Angela had, and she was going to hang onto it with every ounce of will she had.

It had started well. This morning, she’d almost known her companions, needing only a quick glance in her notebook to confirm what she could almost remember, instead of the sick panic she couldn’t recall experiencing, but her body anticipated when she woke. She’d been pretty certain she’d bought the clothes she put on, rather than stolen, though the memory of buying them was gone with everything else. The pistols she’d strapped on each hip may have been hers, or not, but she knew them in a way she knew little else. Without even reaching for the memory, she knew their range, the ammo they took and any others she could substitute in a pinch, how to break ‘em down, clean ‘em and re-assemble ‘em, and she knew she could do it blindfolded if necessary.

It was enough. She sat in a relaxed pose, back to wall, seemingly staring off into space, but watching everything by focusing on nothing in particular. A steaming cup of s’pro rested close at hand, and Angela sipped the stimulant laced coffee derivative as quickly as she could handle the heat, feeling the caffeine hold the fog of fatigue at bay. She was still alert, but had read in her journal that tiredness would wash away what little she’d regained for herself.

“So Mel just how much do you know of this Watson character and his need of labourers?”, the man to Angela’s right asked, and the slight woman glanced his way, before regarding the rest of the people with her. It amazed her that they knew her, and seemed to accept her, when she could remember squat about them. Still, her instincts told her that she could trust them, and with certainty a no show, she’d follow instinct.

“I’m guessin’ I’m not the only one who doesn’t know Watson?” she asked, before colouring slightly and looking down at her hands.” I mean, I don’t know Watson, right?”

Most of the people I know here on the Inn in real life I met here at the Inn first, with the exception being Alacrity (my husband) and MMV (my daughter).

We're in Toronto, Canada, but until recently, I used to travel to the US a great deal on business, and so have managed to meet a few Innmates while travelling: Admiral, Tann Talas, and t_catt11 himself. Bromern Sal and Gertie both made a point of stopping in TO on their own travels in order to meet us.

(Yes, dear Raven, Finland is on our list...I'll never make it there on business so we'll need to make it a vacation trip. Besides, Alacarity would insist on meeting you, too )

Caterina considered Andre’s words, mulling over the possibilities. That he had not heard tell of the Eloquent mask of Obarin was disappointing, but hardly surprising; t’would almost have been too easy to get such aide so easily. Andre’s news might have seemed interesting irrelevance but for Caterina’s skill at chess. She recognized an opening gambit that would not yield results until the end game – a long series of moves that would seem harmless until all the pieces were in place.

“Our opponent is mustering his resources, and making them scarce for us,” Caterina mused out loud, fingers of her right hand tapping her full lips as she thought. “Gems for mages, I’d wager, and beasts of burden for siege machines and other war toil. Slaves for labor, and adventurers to swell the ranks of an army. “

“We’ve a war in the making, and still no idea of a foe,” Caterina grated, impatience at last beginning to flash behind her eyes.”But, my old friend, we have now a clue. Goods and people are headed into the wilderness, you say – show me on a map, if you will.”

The early part of their departure was a bit of a blur for Willow. There had been her worry over Asher, of course, and calming Trish had taken all of her skill. Sam had gotten her to a point that she didn’t march out into town, Bess in hands, to haul Asher back by the ear, and Willow was touched by his thoughtfulness, but that had been a temporary lull. As soon as she could decently abandon the captain to handle passengers and deliveries, the former Companion moved as fast as the tight cheongsam allowed.

It took a while to convince Trish to open the door, but few people existed that could resist a determined Willow, and soon, the older woman was enfolded in Willow’s arms, weeping silently and shaking with sorrows old and new. When the worst of the storm passed, Willow went to her room briefly to change into her “shipboard” sari before returning to Trish’s room, carrying her flute. While Trish knit with the intensity of someone determined to brood, Willow played softly, letting the notes come as they wanted. The low, sad melody floated around both women, a ghost of Trish’ lost voice, and it spoke of loss and longing. Eventually, the clacking needles slowed before stopping, Trish heaving a great sigh, and Willow knew that the worst was over.

Dinner had been another trial, what with James being a complete ass over Trish, and Willow had wondered what she had ever seen in him. The first time he tried to accost her for a little alone time, Willow was nice enough about letting him down, but he was persistent in the way that pretty boys who get their way often are. Fortunately, Willow knew the ship better than he did, and she became adept at never being in the more narrow hallways when he was.

On the first full day, Captain Sung pulled Willow aside and let her know that someone was looking or her. With the Captain, it was as much what he didn’t say then what he did say that mattered, and Willow ducked her head a bit, feeling his concern for her. So many people had claimed to love her, but rarely had Willow felt cared for, the way she did on this ship.

“I don’t quite know what to say, Captain-san,” she finally responded,” It’s not like I am actually hiding. Perhaps it is a former client, but it is puzzling….anyone can reach me on the Cortex by wave, they just don’t necessarily know where I am. I’ll…I’ll ask around, see if any of my old colleagues have been contacted.”

Otherwise, things settled mostly into a routine, as much as it could with extra people on board. Willow knew part of her duties on board would be to entertain the passengers, keep them too busy to wander where they shouldn’t, and so she spent much of her time with them in the common areas, playing cards, chatting and otherwise being a bright spot on an otherwise uneventful trip.

When they landed, Willow was prepared to ask Sam to accompany her “shopping” so she could see about Grandfather’s errand when Sung announced that all the men were headed out. Willow bit her lip, but said nothing. They would be planetside for a time: she could always go later.

I'm trying to decide who's my favourite character and I'm having a tough time....Sulu, Chekov and Uhura are so much more than the peripheral characters they were before, and Karl Urban as McCoy is a revelation! There are a million fansites launching, I'm sure

From the trailers, I was pretty sure that I was going to like the actors playing Kirk and Spock, and I most certainly did, but the others were a welcome delight!

“Lady Aguila D’Oro!” The merchant, Andre Magnotta, bellowed in his jovial, deep voice. “I am both honored and distraught by your arrival. Had I been given notice, I would have prepared such the feast as to impress even those drunken sods living large at the House of Alanus, but as it stands I have a mere five course indulgence consisting of braised duck, imported brandy, and what vegetables the winter stores can spare.

“Come! Come! Let us not tarry here when there is much comfort to be had lounging within the cushions of the dining hall,” Andre was as loud as his outfit as he ushered the paladin and her silent companion into his dining hall.

“Your hospitality knows no bounds, Magnotta, but you should remember that most of it is wasted on my simple palate,” Caterina responded lightly, her eyes crinkling with amusement,” let me introduce you to Jenora, an acolyte at the Temple. Perhaps she will eat enough to be a proper guest at your table.”

They entered the dining room to be greeted by Andre’s wife and youngest daughter. Tara was gracious in her hospitality, as she’d always been, and Orinu stared wide-eyed at the woman dressed so outrageously in a man’s trews and armour. Caterina was accustomed to such study by children, and stared solemnly back before winking and smiling.

Dinner was as sumptuous as Andre has promised, though Caterina, with a warrior’s habit of eating lightly, chose items prepared in the simplest fashion, and drinking her wine well-watered. Jenora had stood slightly behind Caterina as the paladin had seated herself, but Tara had waved over a servant with another setting, and Caterina indicated that the acolyte should also eat. Orinu was seated beside Caterina, and continued her unabashed study of the paladin as the light conversation swirled around the diners. When Caterina spotted the girl trying to make out the ornate script along her sword’s scabbard, Caterina twisted the sword on her belt so that the lamplight shone along the scabbard’s length.

“T’is my name, Orinu, and like any proper noble, I have an awful lot of them: Caterina Luisa Maria Aguila D'Oro. That last part is the name of my house, and it’s old Drannese for Golden Eagle.”

Andre had sputtered when the paladin had mentioned nobility, and the grin on his face was that of a man remembering something fondly. Tara elbowed her husband, as if he’d been rude, but Caterina shook her head and smiled briefly at Tara.

“It is alright, Mistress Tara, an old jest between your husband and my father. Father always said we nobles were as fixated with our own lineage as that of our purebred horses, and the longer the name, the more noble the person. I was named on honour of my mother’s family, and she was very noble, indeed,” the paladin continued, her tone lightly ironic.

“Your mother,” breathed Tara,” I’ve never heard much about her….was she among those..uh,”

“No, my mother died in childbirth, delivering Felipe and I,” Caterina responded lightly,” I was raised by my father and governesses. It’s any wonder I know how to dress like a lady, whenever the occasion calls for it.”

The conversation remained light until dessert had been served, when Andre skilfully turned to the reason for Caterina’s visit. The paladin took a last sip of the small glass of port she’d allowed herself, it’s rich sweetness failing to counter the bitter taste the flooded her mouth. She grimaced, slightly, and turned her eagle’s gaze at Tara.

“My mistress, I thank you for the wonderful meal and warm company. I know Andre shares most things with you, cherishing your counsel, but I will be discussing an unpleasantness that should not be shared with young ears…”

“Of course, Donna Caterina, “ Tara rose gracefuily, the lamplight soft on her still lovely features. “Orinu, isn’t it time for your prayers and bed?”

Once mother and daughter had left, Caterina sat forward on her bench, her social manner and relaxed pose changing into a more serious mien. She looked at andre for a time, considering her words, then decided that simplicity and bluntness would save time she didn’t have.

“Indeed we were attacked, and Ethain was slain. It’s the manner of the attack that concerns me, and I have need of your greater knowledge of the world. Our defenses weren’t breached, Magnotta; someone sent a demon into the Keep to attack me.

“There’s someone out there powerful enough to do this, or powerful enough to have a high wizard do this. Normally, I could come up with a few possibilities on my own, but the demon gave me a name of sorts: The Eloquent Mask of Obarin.

“Have you come across such a name in your travels?

Rico’s steady gait carried them through the wet streets, and the little dunn ridden by Jenora kept pace, just far enough back to avoid being splashed by Rico’s hooves. The big warhorse was restive, wanting another good gallop, but knew better than to pull at his bit while still in the city.

“Lady Aguila D’Oro,”, called a deep voice from within the gates outside Magnotta’s estate, and a bear-like man stepped forward into the lamplight. “It’s been a long bit o’ time now, hasn’t it, my lady?” the big warrior grinned, then winced when Rico nearly took his hand off at the wrist.

“Usachar, you must be getting old, to mistake one of the Aguillera D’Oro horses for some common mount,” Caterina smiled to remove the barb from her comment. When Usachar looked past her, clearly searching for Ethain, Caterina shook her head, her smile slipping. Usachar himself grimaced at the news, but brightened at the sight of Jenora on her pert little horse.

“My lady,” he grinned at Caterina once more. “My master awaits you in the main house. Been a bit like a blizzard about here ever since that young thing came knockin’ to let us know you’d be gracin’ these halls once again. A bit of a blizzard to be sure, but its calmed down—eye o’ the storm-like—for close to half a turn now.

“Need I direct you to the stables—I thought not.” The large man chuckled in his gruff way as he stepped to the side allowing Rico to step lively through the gate.

Caterina made a point of handing Rico’s reins to young Ebrai, holding the man’s hands with her own under the big stallion’s nostrils until Rico had gotten Ebrai’s scent. She then uttered a single word to Rico (“Rest”) and the ferocious battle mount ducked his head meekly enough to wiffle the hostler’s clothes, looking for an apple or some other treat.

She stayed for a few minutes, watching the young man care for the two animals, until she realized that her presence (and likely, that of lovely Jenora) was distracting the shy young man, and making his job twice as difficult. She excused herself then, and made her way to the house.

i do have to laugh, though. My post was about attending a religious service, and what are the Google ads down the side? Church robes and other sacramental goods....

Subject: Caterina, Part 1 of ...several, likely (edited)

“It shall be as you require, Lady,” Fetrese acquiesced with a slight bow. “The acolyte previously assigned you shall continue to serve you for as long as you require it. I shall personally see to it that she delivers the message to Master Magnotta. As for the poison, we will deliver news of its deconstruction as soon as it is delivered us. You are, of course, always welcome at any service—do you require robes, slippers? No? Then we shall leave you in your prayer and look for your face among the faithful.”

Caterina gave a slight nod of assent, her thoughts already turned inward on the problem before her. An attack on her person, that may have had her death as its goal, but a specific death that somehow seemed more sinister than death itself. Caterina had no fear of death itself; having given herself over to Rydor in avenging her family, her life was no longer hers, and was Rydor’s to end when she no longer served. No, meeting D’hurgen would be a release, a final gift of grace from Rydor’s hand, but the paladin feared that the poison would not have killed her, but bent her to another’s will, one strong enough to block clerical spells. This potential fate, to be used by another, terrified her.

What would paralyze others, however, catalyzed the Right Hand of Rydor, even if it seemed that she was blocked on all directions. She’d only made a few sallies, her opponent had many defenses and attacks, and so she’d simply have to feel them out, one by one.

For now, she needed to strengthen her own defenses, and heed her duty to Rydor. As she made her way through the glorious Great Hall, Caterina felt her fears and worry rise out of her, lifted away and sent spinning into the vaulted ceilings of the temple. The pure white light fell on her dark hair and golden skin, and shimmered in a thousand points of brilliance off her armour, burnished carefully by her own hand before the service. She let the sanctity of the Temple bathe her clean and vowed again that her blood would be shed to its last drop before evil could mar this hallowed place.

The hushed murmur of the faithful greeted her as plainly as a shout, and followed in her wake as she took her place near the pulpit, having accepted another blessing from the Master of the Iron Tomb. She could only hope that she would not distract from the Master’s sermon, sometimes she would have preferred a simple robe and a place in the back pews, but the Hand of Rydor honoured the Temple with her presence, and to not stand at Fetrese’ side would have been a slight to his prestige that she would not countenance. Instead, she locked her knees in the soldier’s way so that she could focus all her attention on the service, and not feel the protest of an active body forced into stillness.

Just as food and wine fed the body, so did the stately ritual and measured words of religious service feed the soul, and Caterina, in her worried state, hungered to fill the uneasiness within. Fetrese was indeed a master of the service, and Rydor's Handmaiden listened carefully to his wisdom.

After the service, Caterina lingered by Fetrese' side as some of the townspeople and nobles attending the service approached to exchange greetings and other pleasantries. Some she knew from previous visits, others she was able to recognize by the markings of their noble houses (Had Ethain been there, he'd have whispered into her ear those she did not remember - her heart squeezed in pain at the sudden memory). Each was greeted with polite grace and a solemn mannner, and a few may have eyed the black border on her overtunic, but all were too awed to ask anything personal.

After she'd spent a carefully measured time to be respectful of her visitors, Caterina quietly made her farewells and left the temple, hoping for word that Magnotta would see her that evening.

Willow let JW escort her into the meeting room, casting warm smiles to those she knew and polite nods to those she did not. When Chad offered her his seat, she gave him one of her best smiles before gracefully sitting down, crossing her legs so that the dress slits revealed just enough silken thigh to be interesting.

“JW, Darling? Shouldn’t we get the meeting going?” Brigit interjects lightly, “I’m sure that Miss Willow will get to know as many of the men here as she can before the day’s end.”

Willow wasn’t sure what it was about Brigit that brought out the mean and small-minded in her, but she’d learned to trust her instincts. Rather than scowling like she wanted to, though, Willow brought a graceful hand up to her face to laugh behind it, in the manner of a proper Japanese schoolgirl.

“Oh, Miss Brigit, I have not quite the, umm, haste, that you do in such matters. Why I hardly know anyone here but to speak to them! Oh, Mr. Blake –san, “ Willow continued, looking towards John Blake, “you are better, I trust? Please don’t let the fuss and bother rile you. Only your lovely wife should be making your heart race, yes?”

Willow watched for Nora’s glare to soften as the talk moved onto the finding and hiring of a sheriff. The matter didn’t really concern her, so she simply listened while watching the body language of those around her. People lied easily enough with their words, but few people knew how to control their gestures and postures. Nora Blake may act the wealthy lady, but Willow recognized the calculating look of a social climber who was never quite secure in her grasp on the prize. Usha had the same look sometimes, especially when searching the mirror for grey hairs or errant wrinkles on her flawless face.

The ship’s doctor paid closer attention when talk turned to Wyatt and the ship. JW suggested they book passage for four passengers to Beylix, which would earn them some much needed credits, when Jimmy piped up with wanting to go as well.

Willow interjected smoothly, “You do understand, James dear, that we’re not a luxury passenger ship. That many passengers means you will be sharing rooms, or riding a couch in one of the common areas.” She waited for a reaction with a cool “don’t even think about bunking with me” look, one elegant eyebrow arched.

When talk turned of the timeline for the journey there and back again, the need for more ice was raised by Bailey, throwing a bit of a wrench in the works. Brigit came up with the idea of using a shuttle to drop off the passengers on the return trip to save time, and Willow again had to fight a negative reaction to the suggestion, since she really couldn’t think of a reasonable objection to the idea. She promised herself to spend some time later meditating on her feelings to understand where these reactions were springing from.

It was then that Charles raised the matter of security while awaiting a sheriff and Asher volunteered to stay behind.

“I’ll stay. I’ll be sheriff until they come back. They need help Captain and I can’t stand by. Anyway, it will just be until the shuttle comes and then I can keep an eye on it until you return. I ain’t leaving the ship, just – just want to help these people, that’s all, Captain. I know what its like to be alone and no one to look out for ya. It ain’t right.”

"You aim t' sit by planetside and make sure these folk you just met don't get a raw deal, is that it Kid?" Wyatt spoke before Willow could recover from her surprise. "Think it'll be easy? You might have to deal with Alliance, explain them that are recently made dead by our hands, maybe even hold off some before we're back to pick you up. You up for that, Asher? Truly?"

The young man was determined, however, and Willow felt tears prickling at the corners of her eyes as she realized another friend was leaving her, even if it was only temporary.

She leaned over to take Asher’s hand, squeezing it hard, and nearly lost her composure when he turned that sweetly open and honest face to hers. “Oh Asher, honey, you don’t have to set everything right in the world all at once, you do know that? Promise me you’ll be careful!”

Once Wyatt determined that Asher was committed to staying, though, there was nothing more to do but to plan for their departure. As the Captain spoke of leaving as soon as the ship was ready, Willow remembered the luxury items they’d gotten from Dodger.

“Before we do leave, however, we do have some items that a shop owner or saloon manager may be interested in. We’ve twelve bottles (‘Eleven,” Sam interjected quietly) eleven bottles of fine rum,” Willow announced after throwing a narrow eyed glance at Sam,” as well as some glorious dark chocolate. Who’d like to make us an offer?”

“I wouldn’t pretend to guess at my lord, Rydor’s wisdom, your holiness,” Jenora answered Caterina’s question so softly it may have been imagined, and the paladin was further puzzled. Rydor’s nature did not draw the meek and the timid to worship, certainly not as clerics, and Caterina had sensed fire in the girl; though carefully banked.

Fetrese and Hiterung’s arrival forestalled any further conversation, even if Caterina had had the heart to press further. She of all people understood the right to a certain privacy of one’s feelings when everything else about you was mandated by others. She noted the swiftly hidden worry in Fetrese’ face as he ushered the acolyte out into the hallway, and so she kept her own face serene as Jenora left the room.

Habit kept the mask of serenity in place as the two holy men described the failure of the prayer to deliver a message to Sanya, but inwardly, Caterina thought of an oath that would have made most ladies blanch.

“What would you have us do at this point?” Mandrese finished, and Caterina considered her options. To know that Rydor’s might could be blocked was astonishing, and spoke of even greater power behind this than she’d originally imagined.

“The alchemists must continue their work, that is clear. We must know the nature of the poison in order to divine the intent of the sender. As for the message, the capability to block a god’s will is worrisome, to say the least. Is there a discreet way to inquire among your peers at other temples to determine if this phenomenon was isolated? Would any of our own learned cleric know what it would take to do such a thing as this?

As for myself, I think I shall hunt a little further afield. Could you send a runner to the town home of Andre Magnotta? If he is in residence, I’d like to request his hospitality for an evening. He may have news of the world that may not have come to my attention. Until then, I shall attend the noontide service.”
