Dapple listened closely as the others discussed the feeling that had stuck them as her stomach slowly eased its churning. When it appeared that only the mages and Kilgim had felt anything of real consequence, Dapple started to voice her experience, but then stopped herself. Why show how different you are by telling them this? What would it gain anyone beyond exposing yourself?

Instead, talk turned of Talas and the sewer grate, with the big man expressing concern over getting stuck in the small space. Dapple was accustomed to reading body language and other non-verbal cues, but the big fighter was just as accustomed to playing to an audience, and dampening any clues he didn’t want seen. Still, the sheen of sweat on his brow in the cooling evening air was the final tell: there was more to his objections than he let on. The man was afraid. (OOC:Asked the DM for perception roll, and I won).

Having Talas balk at entering the grate was a problem. (Dapple didn’t much care either away about his reaction to Valentine’s offer. She didn’t like Valentine, but then again, she didn’t like anybody.) Arien, Char and even Kilgim were decent fighters, but having more bodies between Dapple and sharp pointy things always made a great deal of sense. So, to convince him was the task at hand.

Dapple forced herself to walk up to the big warrior, her own sturdiness diminishing to waifdom in light of the man’s sheer size. She tilted her head up at him, looking quizzically, like a sparrow taking the measure of an ox. “Talas,” she spoke aloud, her deep voice quiet in the gloom, “crouch down beside me, as if you are walking in a small space. Make yourself as small as you comfortably can, and still be able to walk. I’ll take your measure. “

(Assuming the gladiator does so, otherwise the rest of this post is invalid. Also assuming DM agrees to my actions.

When Talas did so, Dapple moved to stand beside him. She walked around him, touching a shoulder here, a bent knee there, closing her eyes from time to time so that her body, rather than her eyes understood. She then crouched beside Tann, holding her arms out to encompass a space around herself. When she was satisfied that she knew, within her very bones, how much space Talas needed, she nodded. Before the man could rise, she moved with lightning speed to grab and hold his chin with hard fingers. Cold gray eyes bored into those of the warrior’s.

“Know this, big man. I go in there first, and risk my life to find our way through traps and other perils. If I say that there is room for you to pass, you may be assured that it is true.”

Dapple let go and stepped lithely to the sewer entrance, awaiting the signal to head in.

I am starting to understand Willow, so the posts are coming easier. Glad you liked it!

Many of my characters have elements of my personality, but they aren't me...I sometimes take a character on that's very different from me, and it takes a while for me to get into their skin.

Subject: Call me Cupid

Humming softly to herself and Trish, Willow had just about finished her task of putting away the groceries when Asher’s call came through the ship’s comm.

“Hey! Willow! It’s Ash.” The lad spoke excitedly. “I need some advice. Got myself some company and I’m looking to treat her right, right?”

”Good for you, dear! A young man needs new friends, doesn’t he?” Willow winked at Trish, who grinned through the scar tissue around her mouth.

“Right.” Ash continued. “I’m looking for a decent place to eat around here. Know of any place to treat a girl right?”

”Sunni’s Noodle House over by the market should be good. It’s above the street level so not too noisy and I’ve heard that the meat is actually real. Of course, that’s like asking a preacher for advice on giving birth so I can’t guarantee the meat choices. The fries are awesome though, and the bill shouldn’t break you. “

Asher interrupted the doctor, “Gotcha! Thanks! Oh! And could you do me one more favor? Could you make sure my bunk is set right to receive company? I thinking we’ll be dropping by after a bite to eat… and I want to make a good impression… and you’re just… good with… the details of things like this…”

Willow’s knowing smile could be heard over the comm., and Trish’s head was bowed as she shook it back and forth slowly. If she could still make sounds, she’d have been chuckling. “Asher, dear, you can trust me to set the right mood, never you mind! Go have fun…and if she’s a working girl, look for her health certificate posted where she finds her customers, hmm? Otherwise, we’ll be giving you meds for a week.”

“Alright then!” Asher sounded distracted and Willow wasn’t sure he’d heard that last part. “Thanks, hey! Oh, and tell the Capt I’ll be back ‘round early evening. Gotta go!”

Willow turned off the comm and looked to Trish, who was still grinning. ‘Well, I now have a few more things to do! May I be excused from grocery duty, Auntie?” As Trish patted Willow’s arm with “go on, get” tilt of her head, Willow leaned in and kissed the older woman on the cheek. “That’s for understanding.” She then raised herself on her toes to kiss Trish’s forehead.”And that’s for the crystal dumplings!”

This time, Trish swatted Willow on the bottom, and the doctor laughed merrily as she swept from the kitchen. Once back to her room, she moved to her computer screen and called up Sunni’s Noodle House on the cortex. A smooth faced hostess answered, and Willow asked for Sunipta Srinadathan. Since few people knew Sunni’s proper name, the hostess looked puzzled before she was pushed aside. A Pan Asian woman peered into the lens, the closeup showing small signs of age that distance had concealed.

“Who’s asking for me? Who’s there? Why, you’re Usha’s girl! Sunipta Takahara, how are you, girl? How’s the family? No, go away (this part said off lens to the hostess) I can take a call from family without your help!”

Willow smiled widely at the screen and ducked her head before responding,” I am well, Auntie Sun and so is Usha. I am sure she would love a call from you.” Aunt and niece chatted for a bit before Willow moved to the purpose of her call. “Auntie, I have a young friend coming over with a date. I’d appreciate it if you were to take good care of him and make him look important for his lady friend, hmm? Serve him the good stuff instead of the tourist fare, and I’ll make up the difference on the bill. He’s just starting in the world, so a little rough on the edges, but he’s dear to me.”

“Describe him to me and I’ll take care of everything. I’ll watch the door for him, so this stupid girl won’t send him away if he doesn’t tip her. Tell me, Sunipta “Call-me-Willow”, were you the last girl to be born smart AND pretty? Those pouffy lipped stick girls have no brains!”

Willow chatted some more before signing off. As casual and languid as she often appeared to others, she moved quickly now as time trickled away from her. She gathered some supplies into a carrysac and headed over to Asher’s room.

Stepping down the ladder, she took a moment to survey the room. “At least there’s no girlie pics to take down,” she murmured to herself, then set to work. Although the bed was made with relatively clean sheets, she stripped it and remade it with silk sheets and a wine red coverlet from her own supply. Silk scarves draped over the (heatless) lights softened the lighting to a rosy glow, and Willow lit a small incense stick to purify the room. She timed it carefully, having long ago worked out with Kora the precise amount of burning she could do before the freshers were stressed. Pinching out the stick with wet fingers, she tucked the remaining incense away and brought out a vial of ylang ylang oil, letting a few drops settle onto pillows and sheets to subtly enhance the room’s mood.

Lastly, she swept the zines and books from a nearby table and set down a silver tray. On the tray she set two glasses and a bottle of sake. It was still corked and sealed, and Willow left it that way, to assure the “date” that she wasn’t being doped. It was one of her last bottles, but she’d been asked a favour and Willow didn’t stint.

Taking a last look around, Willow nodded then dashed to her room. She’d taken hours to get ready for Dodger earlier, and now she had minutes to repair the day’s damage.

Well, hell's bells, then...Willow don't need Wyatt along

And Blamm, I had the same sense of Asher's request, too, just didn't want to assume anything about the state of your room.

I'll post on the weekend before Al does, I hope...storm heading into Denver on Friday, so I hope my plane leaves before it breaks.

Hey, If Willow is gonna "make sure your room is presentable", you may want to let me know what general state it's in...otherwise I'll assume that it is much like any teenage boy's room, with discarded clothes everywhere and girlie mags under the bed If it's basically very tidy and the bed's so tight you can bounce a quarter off it, we'll have a hrad time believing ya! *LAUGHS*

So...post a brief description here and I'll take it from there.

Dapple listened to Arien with no expression on her face, but her hands were on her daggers, and her weight centered as if ready to counter any move. Such readiness was necessary with the brash knight, who thought with his heart first and counseled his head later. He would rush in to his beloved sister, and if Char and Kilgim followed, Dapple would have little choice but to be with them. She had a quiet moment of astonishment at the calm acceptance of such a fact, and so was already beginning to nod when Arien’s words penetrated.

“But that will boon us not. You say the sewer grate is passable? Let us move as soon as cover of darkness falls. Adrian and Jal can create a distraction with their magic. Then we shall enter though the grates, gain entrance to the Keep…”

It is truly the end of days…the boy learns caution, and you throw caution to the wind. You would risk your live for these? You think you have friends? You think you are even capable of…

This time Dapple did shake her head vehemently, not wanting to listen to the poison any more. Realizing she had done so visibly, she looked up to see the others looking at her curiously. “Char’s right, dividing our efforts too early would buy us nothing. Best to keep our strengths together until we are inside. Maybe being invisible wouldn’t be good if we need to travel together, but is there anything any of you can do to quiet those of us who rattle and clink with every move?” She tilted her head at Kilgim and the mages at the question.

After the others discuss the plans (assuming some discussion, of course) Dapple finds a quiet tree trunk to get a little rest. Huddled within her cloak with the hood pulled low, she closed her eyes and refused to think of anything for a while.

When it was time to set out, Dapple took the lead from Char when they drew close to the hidden sewer. With the setting of the sun and the cooling of the air, Dapple felt her senses coming alive. That’s when the feeling rolled through her. A vicious exultation arose within her, along with bile as pain ripped through her. It was as if she was being pulled apart. This is what it feels like to go mad she thought, just before the joy and pain disappeared, as if it had never existed.

The taste of vile revulsion remained though, and she spat on the ground and wiped her mouth with a gloved hand. “What the hell was that? “ she asked as everyone had seemed to pause behind her.

Willow’s guile may have confused her “admirer”, but in the end, it was Kora’s dead eyed stare and well placed kick that defused the situation. Willow let out her breath as Zee turned to leave at his brother’s urging. “I’m sorry Lady. Had a bit too much today. Didn’t mean no harm, ” He tried to explain, but his glare to Kora belied his mild words.

“And so no harm has been done, yes? Gentlemen? No need to involve the authorities,” replied Willow her tone as icy as her eyes. When the men finally strode away, Willow nodded briskly and took Kora’s arm in a conspiratorial “just us girls” manner. As the two women headed back to ship, Willow murmured to Kora,” Now wasn’t that nice to have a stroll in the market? I’m sure we don’t want to bother the captain with the petty little details of our day, hmm? He’ll just get all manner of grumpy-like, and who wants to deal with that nonsense?”

(Assuming agreement…otherwise, can back post).

Walking up the ramp into the cargo area, Willow let go of Kora’s arm after a friendly squeeze and called out loud, “Auntie? We’ve got your veg and your rice and such! If I put away the groceries, will you make lotus seed dumplings for dessert? And you should have seen this fabric shop I found! All kinds of wool and silks and such! You would have had your needles itching for this fabric and…”

Willow chattered away happily as she moved into the depths of the ship, her back straight and arms graceful with their burden of bags and packages. Already her mind was on getting ready again for the meeting with Dodger. It was if being accosted was really of no great matter to her, and already forgotten.

Willow kept up her act of scared mouse-wife, but inside, her mind was on a fast burn, considering her options. Her old status, training and anesthetic-filled hairpin meant that Willow had never been taken unwillingly, but her status meant nothing now. Training and knockout drops would have to do, in a pinch. Damned if she had taken from her what she wasn’t willing to give.

“You sure be pretty,” the bald headed man breathed into her face, demonstrating an urgent need for a dentist, “ I bet your Kai Tze won’t mind sharing.”

“Zee!” Another man shouted, which drew Willow’s eyes to Kora. “We’s want to move on. Wei Shan Dohn Woo. (Big Danger)

The man called Zee seemed confused as he dropped Willow’s arm and asked, “She’s your Kai Tze?”

That was really all Willow needed. Before he’d even finished his question, she stepped quickly off to the side, back into the crush of people, bags and packages swinging from her arms. As best as she could, she maneuvered through the throngs of people towards Kora. If Zee tries to pursue, she’ll do her best to evade his grasp again.

As for the Chinese, was thinking of posting common expressions when I get a chance to write them up. I know a few Cantonese phrases, as well as the Mandarin quoted in the reference materials, so was going to add them for flavor (for all our Chinese friends, my apologies in advance...I learned the words phonetically, so my accent is funny )

Lai - you
Lai dai - you plural (like y'all )
Josan - good day (greeting)
Lai ho ma - How are you
Gong Hay Fat Choi - Happy (Chinese) New Year
Joss - Luck (yes, Joss Whedon changed his name from Josh to "luck")
dim sum - literally "little meats" - meal of many small dishes, hence my knowing the following:
bao - dumpling
hargow - shrimp dumpling
Ta sieu bao - bbq pork dumpling
Sieu mei - pork dumpling (my favorite!)
congee - rice soup

Dapple had listened quietly as Char made his report to the others, slipping into a convenient shadow as the spell faded and she became visible again. Darkly mottled clothes, an indistinct outline and the gathering darkness all obscured her, but visible she was, and she hated it. If you didn’t insist on staying around people, they wouldn’t be there to stare at you…

Dapple ignored the deadness within to eye Arien and his reaction to the dagger. Despite his admiration for his sister, he had to be keenly worried for her, and there was no telling what the impetuous knight would do as a result. Dapple couldn’t understand love, but she’d witnessed its effects enough to recognize its danger. She drifted closer to Arien to breathe a few words of cold comfort.

“C’mon Arien, this is Alloryn we’re talking about. They may have grabbed her, but they’re no match for Alloryn. She’s probably got them all cleaning the place and running errands so the place will be all shiny when she hands the keys over to you. Then she’ll make a witty comment about how long you took to get here.”

Her words were soft and meant only for Arien’s ears, so when Jal spoke up, Dapple broke off and listened. She thought for a moment, trying to not shudder at Jal’s source of information, when a thought occurred to her. When no-one else seemed to come up with the same notion, she reluctantly spoke.

“I don’t think Wy-wynter meant Alloryn…the bugs mentioned a lady of some sort, that they were seeking. That compass thing points to the Keep, right? Things are coming together in a way I’m not liking.”

Dapple watched her hand fade into nothingness as Jal’s spell took hold and felt the same giddy elation that had overtaken her before. (I’m free!) She twirled once with delight, a fey smile lighting up her hidden face, before she settled herself back to the task at hand. She tapped Char’s shoulder once to let him know she was ready to go, and they made their way down the cliff.

The little rogue moved cautiously, despite the spell, as she knew that a bush shaking without a breeze or grass bending against the wind would still draw unwanted eyes. She couldn’t count on the defectors abandoning their former discipline and keeping poor watches. She kept eyes and ears sharp, and that keen sense of danger stilled her movement even before she consciously noticed the guard on the wall. She froze in place until his attention returned to the Keep and he moved on.

No spell can replace your wits. Keep moving, though, they may have patrols!

The sewer grate was where the magical Sight had placed it, and Dapple checked it carefully for recent use, recent maintenance or any signs of traps. She measured carefully with hands and eyes, and fixed its dimensions firmly in her mind. She’d be able to find it and open it in the dark, if need be.

Darkness was growing, and she knew Char would need the light to scale the cliff. Her cursed birth may have left her deformed, but she always seemed able to see in the dark better than anyone she’d known.

Back at the foot of the cliff, Dapple related what she’d found to Char in hushed tones, her voice drifting no further than her shadow in the fading light. He’d know what to make of her findings, and would be the one to tell the others.

“Der be soldiers ‘bout,” Char whispered, staring at Dapple as if he saw her in plain sunshine, a fact that made her keenly uncomfortable. “Foun’ some tracks lookin’ like dey be chasin’ afta some runnin’ prey.” Char shifted and showed Dapple the dagger, which she’d recognized immediately. “Dey wen’ off in dat direction.”

“Alloryn!” breathed Dapple,” but why would she be…gods above and below, what’ll we tell Arien?” Dapple followed Char back to camp and listened quietly as he reported their findings. The game had just gotten more dangerous, and there were more chess pieces in peril than they’d guessed.

The market was awash in humanity, and Willow enjoyed the opportunity to be around more than the same five people in one small place. Despite (or because of) the smells both pleasant and nasty, moving through the crowd was a graceful dance of dodging people, equipment, stray animals (pets or food, it was so interchangeable), smiling and nodding to this friendly greeting or that befuddled stare.

Otherwise, in terms of shopping pleasure, it was dreadfully boring; dreary goods in dreary stalls sold by dreary souls. Willow hardly had the heart to haggle down the prices proffered by some, but the thought of her beloved crew choking down protein paste in place of a meal hardened her heart. Their arms grew laden as Willow and Kora traded off bartering for foods (Willow couldn’t bring herself to buy meat, even when they could afford it), and when Kora said she’d be off for spare parts, Willow nodded distractedly, wondering if they’d exhausted the possibilities of the market already.

A fabric shop waved its silken banners to her glad eyes, and the young doctor hastened her steps through the crowd to gaze enraptured at the textures and colors. There was a brushed twill, sturdy yet fine, and the green color would set off Kora’s eyes so nicely. That pink wool would be knit up into something pretty in Auntie’s hands in no time and that blue silk with the gold pattern? Willow was certain that it would be just perfect for…

“Hey my pretty.” A bald man, stocky yet strong leaned in close, his whiskey soaked breath wafting into Willows face, “ Dow Ma Tze! How about we’s have a good time together, you’s and I, Jah Joh. I got a gau gahn just lookin at you’s.” His strong hand had gripped her upper arm possessively, and it tightened as if Willow had already agreed.

Rung Tse Fwo Tzoo Bao Yo Wuo Muhn! “ Willow gasped, her eyes wide with pretend fright and her free hand coming up to her mouth as if to cover her gasp. “Kind sir, you must be mistaken,” she continued breathlessly, “ I’m no jien huo , please let me go.” Willow looked around her, looking for Kora, but making sure she gave her best “lost kitten” look to whoever in the crowd would make eye contact. As she looked back at her accoster, she shook herself slightly as if he was getting rougher with her. Her free hand continued up to her hair as if the motion was dislodging her veil, and she palmed the butterfly pin.

She brought her free hand down to rest tremblingly on his clenched hand as she looked at him beseechingly. “We can’t let my husband see you touching me. I’ll be beaten and you? “ A pretty little gasp of horror,”I can’t be responsible for yet another man’s death!”

OOC: If the man won’t back down over Willow’s threat of her husband, she’ll give him a scratch with the pin, enough to knock him out. That is, if she hasn’t encouraged the crowd to come to her rescue.

If you have alcoholism as a complication, then it will rear its ugly head from time to time. You can swear off the sauce, then fall off wagon when things get tough, or you are reminded of something painfaul, or you can be a "functional alcoholic": drinking more than most, but seemingly sober, then veering into full drunk on occasion.

Despite having no discernable pockets in her outfit and carrying no handbag, Willow made those sixty credits disappear faster than a politician’s promise the day after an election. “Sixty’s not a lot, Captain,” she replied lightly, “but I’ll do what I can to get canned yummies over that nasty paste. Fresh’ll have to wait for a celebration day.”

Willow turned back to the ship as she started to think back over the list for things to trim out. The hem of her tunic swirled with the movement, as did the glossy mass of her hair. That reminds me…a quick change into market wear…can’t undo all the morning’s hard work!

As she walked up the loading ramp, she called back to her departing friends,” Don’t do anything I wouldn’t, boys! Or, if you do”, and she looked back over her shoulder with a wicked grin,” make sure you stretch properly first. Don’t want any injuries in my sick bay today!”

Laughing lightly to herself at what she imagined Dash’s reaction had been, Willow glided through the ship to her room. She thumbed open the com while undoing the tiny little buttons holding her tunic closed at the neck.

“Kora, dear? Auntie (Willow’s pet name for Trish) gave me the shopping list, so I’m just making a quick wardrobe change. This outfit’s all wrong for the day and completely wrong for the market. Give me five minutes, or better yet, come over and give me a hand.”

Lifting the tunic carefully over her head (don’t snag the embroidery on the hairpin…that was a month’s allowance!), Willow moved around her scented cave with an economy of motion that spoke of long practice making quick changes. She pulled a simple abho from the overflowing closet, the loose fitting shirt-like garment having short, wide sleeves, open neck, and a tighter weave was more modest for the day, and wouldn’t be ruined by the dusty marketplace. “That, and a veil for my hair, will make this scandalous temptress fit for a little grocery shopping,” she murmured to herself.

I should never have lost my temper, Dapple thought to herself with chagrin, once you let one emotion get you, the rest find purchase as well. It had been a cold wet ride back to the Waymeet, and the work to build a shelter for the horses could only do so much to warm muscles when the skin was wet. She prickled under Arien’s disapproval, and bristled at the gladiator’s outburst (wanting to stick out her tongue and cross her eyes at being called a child), but mostly, she felt shame. Us monsters should stick together…

He’s human enough whispered the dead voice within, Just mad as a hatter. You’re the only monster here. Stop sniveling and toughen yourself to the world, or it will crush you. If you feel nothing, there is no pain, no anger…feel nothing, be nothing, want nothing…

Still, the odd little mage felt enough of Dapple’s gaze to explain himself, and as much as Dapple watched impassively, she shuddered inwardly at his story. Dapple might have lost everything, but she’d had it once, but this one? He’d been cursed from the beginning. When he finished, Dapple didn’t say anything, but her cheeks were pink, all the more vivid for her pallor. She knew magic was creepy, but ghosts? Especially someone you knew? She didn’t know what to think of it, but she didn’t want to be responsible for taunting the mage further.

Aren’t you a soft little thing…shall we gather everyone around for a warm hug? Sing songs by the fire? We could all reveal our secrets! The gladiator would be glad to have a trollop in his bed, go ahead…

Dapple swallowed the bitter taste in her mouth and addressed Jal. “Does she, uh, Wynter, does she come to you freely? You don’t compel her? (Assuming Jal’s affirmative response) I suppose I can live with a ghost, we have enough of our own.” She paused for a moment to look at her feet before seeking Jal’s eyes again. “Just don’t be chatting when we need quiet, and don’t be offended when I choose to not take her, uh, your advice. It doesn’t always appear to be complete.”

Embarrassed by so much chatter from herself, Dapple lapsed into quiet, and did her best to get a little rest. Too much emotion had raised itself from the ashes, however, and Dapple’s dreams were tormented. Sapphirine ran through endless alleys, chased by Tonno and the others, and Dapple could only watch, helpless. Every time they caught the hapless girl, Dapple woke, dry mouthed. Finally, the little thief gave up and waited for morning.

The keep lay below, and Dapple absorbed every detail as she lay flat on her belly, peering over the ledge as she regained her breath. The climb would not have been difficult had it been a wall, but fighting branches and shrubs while moving silently was something she’d been slow to master. Char didn’t laugh at her too often, but she knew she’d looked foolish clambering through the bush. She scrambled back away from the edge as everyone gathered to plan their next move.

"Da keep be der, sures 'nuff," Char began, crouching effortlessly as if the climb had been nothing. "It be boarded up, same as da magic sight did show back at Freegate, bu' I'll nee' be gettin' closer t' da grounds 'fore I be able t' tell ya wha' lies widdin'" The ranger glanced about before sharp blue eyes settled on Dapple. "Da Moon an' me'll be back 'fore nigh' fall."

Dapple nodded, and started thinking about how Sunset might be able to help, if she was willing to, when Jal spoke up. His words about the compass were interesting, but Dapple heard the unspoken request to go along. So, apparently, did Char, and he disapproved.

"All da more reason t' let dose o' us who can sneak 'ave a quiet li'l look abou', no? ‘Less ya can conjure up wha' we saw back a' Freegate, only so's we can see da whites o' them Imperials' eyes should dey be der, I donna know dat I'm too keen on 'avin' t' try an' keep 'idden wit' a cityboy in tow... no 'ffence, bu' da only reason I feel Da Moon can go be because Da Moon done it 'fore, see?" Char motioned between himself and Dapple with a gloved hand covered in dirt. "We been in practice."

“I’m not exactly countrified, Char,” Dapple drawled drily, before turning her gaze on Jal. “Can you make yourself invisible? Can you do the same to me?” She tried to hide the eagerness in her voice, but likely failed. She’d remembered the feeling of complete nothingness when Alloryn had cast the spell on her, and it was the one time she’d wished for mage skills.
