Confederation Day was 1867...and the Montreal Expo celebrated our 100th birthday in 1967. I attended, but I was only one years old

Willow watched the scanner in her peripheral vision while keeping an eye on Sam, worried her tightly wound friend would snap under the strain. As the device whirled and whirled, Willow let her breath out slowly. Maybe it had been just a show to scare locals, Willow wondered when the device beeped once to indicate it had found something worthy of analysis. When it beeped a second time and scrawled its warning in both official languages, Willow paled.

"A bio weapon, one that's mutated from the original strain. Which means, even if you were a government puppet and could get your hands on a vaccine, it wouldn't work. At least, not enough. "

Brigit goes red in the face, "What! No! Ten years chasing down this score and you tell me it's contaminated? No! No gorram way! it's a trick. You want it all for yourselves don't you!? That bastard Benny put you up to this? I'll be damned if I let some greenhorn like you steal it from me now. It's mine! I earned it and I'm the only one who'll be walking out with it!" She looks around the room and then steps back.

Before Willow could react, a huge bang from the corridor to this room sounded as if something just fell on the hatchway followed by the muffled sound of a shotgun. Willow could barely register teh sound before Wyatt was between her and the corrider, her dark angel as always. Sam, on the other hand, had twitchy nerves to begin with, and he had just about lost control. Producing his own weapon he grinned a bit wildly and sank back against the wall.

“That’s the big bad wolf, and he’s a huffin’ and a puffin’,” he said, following it up with a nervous giggle.

Willow opened her mouth to try and talk Sam down before he fired in such a small, reinforced area when Brigit ran over to a crate nearby where a crowbar was resting. "Here! I'll show you." she says as she grabs the crowbar and heads towards the coffin with the intent to smash open the glass.

Willow hissed a Bengali curse that still managed to sound musical and charming as she stepped around the casket to put herself between Brigit and the casket, dropping the analyser into the open casket. Setting herself firmly in the tai chi stance for Moving Clouds, Willow prepared to stop Brigit bodily if necessary.

Willow didn't like the sight of the glass (if glass was indeed what it was) nor did she like the warning. The elderly Tong had to have known what his key would unlock, and he left the treasure down here for years.
Sam and Brigit were arguing about breaking the glass and Willow had to intervene before Sam got twitchy enough to shoot Brigit or the glass.
"Sam!" Willow called crisply, "Walk away, my pet and don't rile Miss Brigit up any more. Buddha only knows whatever else she may have hidden away under those skirts. And you, my pretend schoolmarm, " Willow turned her imperious gaze on the redhead," even a fake teacher should be smarter than breaking the seal on something before you check it out. Amateurs! I work with amateurs!"

As she spoke, Willow rummaged in the bag slung across her body, not taking her eyes of Brigit but knowing every item by touch. She pulled out a small box that she thumbed to life, pulling a small wand from a slot in the side of the box (Sam and Wyatt would recognize the toxin analyzer she'd insisted on buying the first time the crew had been even close to flush with cash). She moved the wand around slowly, watching the readout as she did so. Lowering the wand into the casket to wave it along the edges of the glass, she muttered to Brigit, but seemingly to herself.

"Don't want to be breaking anything without at least a clue of what's in there. Maybe a trace was left on this side of the glass when it was sealed."

She leaned in with both hands held before her as if to sweep further inside the sarcophagus, allowing her to sweep up the datadisk in the hand with the analyzer box.

Willow watched the tension build in Sam, and to a lesser degree, In Wyatt, and she wasn't sure how much more she could play the game without Sam losing what little control he had left. Brigitte's response about the trappings being all smoke and mirrors didn't settle them any, and both were reluctant to move towards the seeming tombs.

Wyatt flicked his eyes at Brigitte contemptuously before turning his basilisk stare on Willow, one eyebrow cocked. She shivered, and hoped he'd forgive her cavalier treatment later. "Go on, boys, " she huffed carelessly," Don't be afraid of a bit of a show. Caves aren't airtight, whatever was in those crates would have deteriorated long ago. Let's get this moving along. "

As both men reluctantly moved forward, Sam muttered "If I git shot in the back.."I'm gonna haunt you fer sure..." .

"No worries about that, Sam, "Willow responded her voice firm," I may need you to open the lids, but I am not having both of you unarmed and carrying the treasure. We'll have Brigitte walk out first, as a show of good faith, carrying as much as she wants. We can follow, with both of you armed and ready. Once we know the way's clear, we can always come back. Right, Brigitte?"

Willow had been presented with more than a few unpleasant surprises in her life, so she accepted Brigitte's response about the door with equanimity. The comment about Pearson having a reason to kill Sam bothered her, though she did her best not to let it show.

She worked the console keys with efficiency, leaning close to Sam so he could see which keys she used but Brigitte could not. The fact that the school marm didn't even try attested to her words about the lock being only one way. That means she has no real reason now to keep any of us alive, other than protection from the townsfolk and strong backs to carry the gold. Must still have a plan to get off-planet...

"Pearson? Wanting to kill Sam? Because of you and him? Oh, honey, half the 'Verse would be after our dear Sam, then; boy can't keep his pants up to save his life! You're gonna have to learn to pick 'em better, imagine losing control of your pigeon like that! Surely he knows you've slept with half the town?!" Willow chattered as the door whooshed open and lights deep within flickered to life.

"Miss Willow," Wyatt drawled as the new shaft was revealed. "Maybe me or Sam should check it out first."

"Good idea, hun, let's have the lovers check it out together...you can cover them and make sure Miss B doesn't ry anything funny." Willow wasn't sure who she was trying to provoke, Pearson or Brigitte, but she knew that when you found a weakness, you just kept poking at it.

When Willow had a chance to look at the console, she actually felt her racing heart slow down as the advantage shifted marginally back in their favour. She smiled crookedly and tilted her head knowingly at Brigitte, playing the game now from a position of strength.

"Oh, I'll be your guest, sugar, but you will also be mine. Worked a con an a hospital CEO once, and he was proud of these med-vault thingeys. I have the key and the code, but we're going to have to work as a team to get everything out of the ship. Come here Sam, love, I'm all cold from my feet getting wet, I'll want that coat back again."

(Presuming Sam is able and willing to bring her the lab coat) Willow carefully unbundles the coat and slips it back on with a shiver that was only partially faked. She dipped a gloved hand into the pocket and brought out the chess piece, finally letting Brigitte see the item that had caused so much pain and suffering.

"The thing is, Brigitte, I can open that door. And I'm pretty sure we'd want to enter together, to see for ourselves that we can play nice over the pretties inside. Maybe even bring some fine strong men with us to carry the heavy stuff. These med-vaults, though, aren't ordinary armed doors...they don't like to stay open long in case they are holding radiation meds or live viruses or other nastiness. I'm going to tell Sam here the code, and he can re-open the door when it closes, but that means you have to be certain you trust him to let us out again. "

Willow smiled wickedly, "I'm pretty sure he wants me back safe and sound...for our long conversations at night. How about you? Think he'd want to make sure you make it back out ok?"

Willow let Wyatt and Sam respond to Brigitte in ways that spoke volumes about the men themselves: Wyatt calm and implacable, the anger banked yet strong, Sam with more heat tinged with guilt and shame. Neither man trusted Brigitte, and let it show enough for Brigitte to focus on. Willow listened to the curvaceous snake twist every situation into someone else's fault, and felt something harden inside of her.

"Enough," Willow waved imperiously and stepped from between the men, "you`re right, Brigitte, most fellas are weak and will fail you when you need them the most. If it weren't for their most obvious uses," she paused to look back at Wyatt and Sam lasciviously before smirking wickedly at Brigitte, "I wouldn`t bother with the lot of 'em . What's a few casualties when there's money to be had? "

She paused and looked askance at the water. "You could have warned me, doll, not to wear any of my nice clothes...some guys go for the naughty doctor look and getting this lab coat cost me a pretty penny." She shrugged off the coat, leaving the key in the pocket, and bundled the coat up before handing it to Sam. With a moue of distaste, she stepped delicately into the water, and tried to not wince as the cold water saturated the boots immediately, ruining the impractical footwear. She sloshed towards Brigitte, seeming to peer at the water but watching the schoolmarm with her peripheral vision.

"Now where would the key go? Where's this ship?"

Willow felt a grim satisfaction that she'd gotten some light in response to her call, however brief, but the sloshing of water bothered her. She'd started to look over at Wyatt, the question clear on her face, when she realized the flashes of light she was seeing weren't her eyes playing tricks in the dark.

Then a voice curled around her ear, a breath on the nape of her neck," We meet again, Miss Willow. Shame it is once again not under the best of conditions." Willow fought an instinctive reaction to cry out from being startled, and quickly put a calming hand on Sam. No telling what the twitchy pilot might do in the dark.

"I apologize for startling you like this but grandfather asked me to bear you a message Miss Willow. I am afraid I bear sad tiding for Grandfather has left this world to join his ancestors. Fear not, it was not by the hand of the devil and his mistress. In fact, shortly after you left it was like something he was holding on to for life was no longer a burden - perhaps he found someone to share it with? I would not know." And with that Willow found a piece of folded paper pressed into her hands. "But if you brought any measure of peace to him, I will be forever in your debt."

"I am so sorry for your loss, grandfather will be missed for his wisdom and kindness. If there is any debt, it is mine, Lau Tsu, for any part played in bringing that monster here, and not calling out that hussy sooner. I didn't like her from the start, but had to wonder if my judgement was clouded by personal feelings," Willow responded, her eyes flickering towards Sam and away again. She paused to read the note, eyes bright with sudden tears, and passed the note to Wyatt.

(OOC: Leaving room for interaction, reaction, etc from Wyatt)

Lau Tsu continued, his voice implacable, "We seek out the devil Pearson to seek revenge for his deeds against the family. But he moves like a shadow and eludes even me. I feel like he is watching us, mocking me. I can find a acorn carried on the wings of an eagle, but this man is beyond my skills. Be cautious. He does not fear death and enjoys its company. I fear I grow old, for I can't track a murderous villain and I trusted the devil in a woman's guise. For my sins, I bear the price."

"I don't know that Pearson even feels something like mockery, or joy. He's just...wrong," Willow shivered, remembering Pearson's complete calm at handling the man he'd killed, "Please, please be careful. I would not lose you, too."

(OOC: Leaving room for further interaction)

"You go to meet her? Be careful. She is the more dangerous of the two. We must go and seek out Pearson. Good Luck to you."

Willow nodded at the wisdom of Lau Tsu's words. Pearson hid his madness beneath a veneer of lawmaker professionalism, but once revealed, you knew to fear him. Brigitte was a snake in the grass, never where you thought she'd be and twisting to strike at every turn. Willow thought she had Brigitte figured out, though, so it was time to make an end of it.

"We should go," she said quietly to the men on either side of her, love and affection and worry for them both welling up within her so fiercely she could scarcely breathe. "That sound of sloshing worries me, I don't remember hearing anything about water down here."

"Well that's a good thing to hear Sister, your voice that is. I didn't think you were coming. Follow the drift to the end of the old shaft. I'm waiting on you sugar and I think we will have enough fortune to shave without you selling the key."

Willow frowned at Brigit's tone; it was too hard edged for the experienced con artist Willow had realized her to be. Either she was losing patience with the game, or she'd begun to realize that the game had begun to change, and not in her favour. Willow needed to keep the pressure on, but not enough to make Brigit cut and run. The question was, how to do just that, and no more.

Before Willow could answer, the communicators held by Sam and Wyatt squealed with almost human pain, spiralling near to madness before cutting out with a finality that was chilling. Willow looked to her men in puzzlement before realizing what it must be: either something had happened to Andrew and Wolf, or to the ship. And whatever it was, it had been destruction. Willow wanted to keen her loss as loudly as the communicator had, but Brigit's voice was a dash of cold water to her face.

"Rung Tse Fwo Tzoo Bao Yo Wuo Muhn! What was gorram that? This shaft ain't too sturdy so you best shut off whatever you got making those noises!" Bridget calls out harshly.

"You don't think we waltzed in here without a mean of knowing what's happening above, do you?" Willow replied, her own voice cold with an anger she'd never let herself feel before. "You've been playing with children and fools too long, sugar, you're descending to their level. We're almost at the curve of the drift; I'd better see some light to show your good intentions, or we walk outta here!"

Topic: could you put guns in a classic dnd game?
Subject: How to handle game balance?

That's really the issue. If a player can have a gun, how do you balance it out so that the player isn't so powerful that they may as well be god moding (to use video game terms.

Making it single shot and fiddly to re-load, comes to mind, as does the danger of getting black powder wet. Plus, as Tek mentioned, the older weapons were prone to being damaged by the very act of firing, so add a percentage chance of damage, up to and including damage to the wielder.

Mages are the most powerful long distance combatants, for example, so their power is balanced by physical weakness and the need for time to cast. If you can strike before they do, you have a chance.

Make the same sort of compromise with guns, or the game will be lopsided, and change dramatically.

I know I have more thoughts on this, and am normally more articulate, but I am fighting my three year old for control of the keyboard

Willow couldn't understand how the others could be Big Damn Heroes, as Sam once called it ; nerves would do her in as surely as any bullet. To walk into a trap, knowing it was a trap? Willow didn't think she could do this, but she had to.

The dark cavern posed a problem. The light made them a target, but they needed it. Willow decided it was better to know what they were walking into, but how to do it as safely as possible?

Her mother was a consummate performer, and had trained her children to follow her footsteps before realizing that growing children aged her to her fans. Willow had been trained for the cameras and the stage, and Companion training had only honed those skills. She needed them now.

She looked around the cavern walls around her, and down the tunnel's darkness, considering the angles. She gestured for Sam and Wyatt to crouch, make themselves as small as possible, then approached the wall opposite them. Standing at an angle before the wall, she called out, using an actor's ability to project sound against the wall, hoping it would bounce and echo down the tunnel, making it difficult to know where the speaker stood. (OOC: Plot point used, pls)

"Well now Bridget, where's the welcome wagon? Having me come down here into the dark don't feel much like we're sharing, now does it? Maybe I should just take my boys elsewhere and sell this key and code to the highest bidder. I've got hooks into some pretty deep pockets, I do not need to be treated like this."
