Even if they've never heard of one of Hollywood's loveliest young actresses...Lost in Translation, The Prestige, Wimbledon, etc. Definitely blond, but perhaps more sylphlike than Brunhilde, lol

Was just popping in to check my games before attempting a little work today (pre-baby vacation starts tomorrow) so I'll see if we get an Inga post on our treatments before I write something up. Otherwise, maybe later this evening.

Be advised, though...thought we were headed for hospital last night, but the contractions stopped. Could be anytime now!

I really have to agree about low level mages and clerics. If you actually use the casting times, use the damage as written and such, low level mages have no business being out of their towers!

I don't go for superhero characters, and like to start a character at low levels and watch them grow...but mages are really frustrating to play at the lower levels.

Clerics were equally frustrating, until Alacrity modified the healing spells to be a percentage of your original hit points (cure light = 25%, for example), but I at least found low level cleric spells that could be used creatively (try using warp wood against archers for great fun!)

Sloppy modules that have monsters in places that don't make sense....that's another gripe!

The team's roster in the Q&A ha your full name listed as Inga Borg Louise Bjornnsen, and the DM's first post refers to you as Bjornnsen. Since I have trouble with all those "s" and "n" combos, and hate misspelling names, I was checking there before I posted.

So...somewhere between character creation and the game, Bjorn Borg left and Scarlett Johanssen arrived...I'm sure the guys prefer Scarlett

Will edit my posts. So sorry!

Subject: Depends on the group, probably

We have a player whose alignment is best described as "chaotic everywhere" so it heps to have minatures arranged with relative distances. Stopped the player from declaring impossible actions within a round as Alacrity would just point to the board and say "you can't get there from here...or are you changing your action to running across the room?"

We also have, as I said before, some young players, and the visuals help them understand the dynamics of battle. When you have a mix of melee fighters, missile weapons and mages, you really want a handle on those "area of effect" spells, lol

Subject: Setting the mood

For years, whenever I played Vanadia, thief extraordinaire, I wore a pair of bronze earrings that were long slender daggers. Alacrity wrote in magical daggers for my character to find, one of which shrinks to an earring, so my character is never completely unarmed. Funny thing is, I sometimes wore them to work, with a corresponding boost to my confidence (and at a distance, they look like crosses, so it was my little secret).

More recently, friends of ours surprised us with sweatshirts to play D&D. Each has "+5 shirt of protection" on the front, and "They're not that tough" (the group's battle cry for over 20 years of gaming) on the back. Alacrity's shirt has "Continuing Where We Last Left Off" on the front, which is how he starts each and every session.

The original group drank mead out of pewter goblets, but the current group is both older and younger (our kids are now playing with us) so that's been set aside as a tradition, and we never did find the mood lighting useful (too dark to make notes, losing dice under the table, etc.)

When our two youngest players joined, Alacrity asked Almerin to design custom character portraits for them, based on their descriptions and character classes. I think that really helped hook our daughter and god-daughter into their characters.

Miniatures definitely help, and over the years, Alacrity has amassed an impressive (and frightening) array of monsters to pitch against us, so when he pulls out something really big and scary to confront our miniatures, chances are it's not standing in for something less deadly

Willow was surprised for a moment at Asher’s decision to stay behind, but when she thought it through, it made sense. If this place was as wild as Sackett warned, then it may be too painful for Asher to see the ghosts of his home all around him. Willow touched his cheek fondly and murmured,” Keep the Roc and Trish safe for us, dear.”

Sung offered his arm and Willow took it after opening a paper parasol to shade her skin from the sunlight. She kept closer to the Captain than she normally would, and said in a conversational manner,” I think it would be a good idea if I looked like I “belonged” to someone, rather than an unattached woman, if this place is a free-wheeling as it looks. Can you bear my attentions for a day, Captain-San or shall I be Dash’s woman for now? You may need to do the talking here, and I’ll interject brainlessly if necessary,” she concluded with a wink.

Subject: Is this what broken ribs feels like?

"Unrecognized command. Unauthorized interface. Initiating security access lockdown proceedure alpha-three." The robot's voice is cold and menacing. "No mercy."

“Oh, crappity” Charlie muttered to herself as she steadied her weapon before firing,” Gonna play hard, are you? If ever I needed a cheat code, now’s the time, oh great gods of the gaming plane!”

The robot fires a red bolt of energy at Pearson, missing him, but Charlie can’t let herself be distracted as she fires. Exhale, squeeze trigger (don’t pull!) inhale and adjust aim, repeat. She does manage to hit the thing, but that draws it’s fire, this time a barely visible pulse that Charlie couldn’t evade. It hit her squarely in the chest and propelled her backwards, though somehow she managed to keep her legs under her and didn’t fall.

Pain bloomed in the centre of Charlie’s chest as the breath left her with a whoosh. She had a terrifying moment when her body refused to breathe in again, the pain holding her rigid. She remembered, stupidly, a time when she’d mistimed a baseball’s bounce on rough turf and caught the ball in her adam’s apple…she’d been unable to breathe then too for a moment. She forced herself to relax, and her ribcage slowly re-expanded, a horrid wheezing sound accompanying that first painful breath. Spots danced behind her eyes and she knew she was badly hurt.

She blinked, woozily, and manages to clear her vision enough to see the thing fire another red bolt, this time at Hatherford, and she winces as the small of burning cloth and singed flesh assaults her nose. She squeezes off another shot but is pretty sure she missed.

Distantly, she hears the looey yell "Pearson, drop the damn thing!" and Pearson responding with "Get down!", and she manages to drop to the floor in an almost controlled fall, the impact knocking the breath from her again.

She feels the explosion of the grenade almost more than she hears it, and when she’s sure the debris has stopped flying, she drags herself back to her feet. One arm is cradled protectively around her chest, the other grips her pistol as she looks to find any big pieces of the robot to sight on. (Note to GM: Let me know if anything is left of the thing to collect and study later)

”Hatherford, you ok, man? Didja get the license plate of the truck that ran me down?“ she wheezes, blinking fresh stars from her eyes and looks groggily around the room to assess the others. “Loo? Pearson? Should we call for Johannsen to see to Hatherford? He looks bad, sir, and I’m not so peachy myself. I can soldier on, though, pending your orders.”

"Honor?" The pirate cackles. "Haw, haw, haw! Dead is dead, sweet thang! Corpses don't tell folks whether they was stabbed in the back or tha face... last time I checked, they don't care! Besides, missy, you took me out of your warlock friend's trickery, not 'cause you bested me in some fair fight! Where's the honor in that, eh?"

En’Aranthea knew better than to be bothered by the man’s taunting, she recognized it as the only weapon he had left. She eyed him with as much noble disdain she’d ever witnessed at Court and replied, “The difference is that you are not dead, and still have a chance to make something of your short and miserable life. Of course, it is such a short life, it is a wonder you can do anything of significance besides evil.”

She’d hoped for a more defensible place for the night, but made the best of things. She asked each person for the watch that would suit them, knowing that Varuna and Valendara (and indeed, perhaps even her cousin) may have needs around their clerical devotions or magely studies. She herself took the least desirable watches, and spent her rest time in the dreamless trance state of her race.

After a bit more of the pirate’s “helpful” interjections, she asked Tal’Anor to gag the man, thinking that finding a mudhole may not have been such a bad idea after all. As they broke the morning fast with more of the iron rations, she gave a portion of hers to the pirate, removing the gag and feeding him so that she needn’t untie his hands.

“I suppose I could send you back through the swamps, to let the Sla’kar mete out their own justice for you and your friends, but you’ll just head back to your “mates”. You’ll stick with us, then, until we can turn you over to the authorities in town.”

OOC: If no one else has any objections, Ena will continue on towards the lighthouse as originally planned. Knowing that there are patrols alerted to their presence, she’ll ask the party of they have any means of scouting ahead undetected, magical or otherwise (oh, to have a ranger in the party lol!!)

Am I bleeding or was it concussive (i.e. impact) damage? I'm guessing the latter based on that it seemed to be a ball of force.

So, maybe I'm having trouble breathing deeply, will have some really impressive bruising in places no-one but the medic will see, but not likely to bleed out in the next fiuve minutes?

Pearson's damage is burn based?

(Learning from Ayrn...ask lots o' questions)

Archtypes have their place, and I've seen really good players take an archtypal character and take them in new directions through the game. It's a way of keeping something fresh, as in "you think you know me..."

The "lazy" players, on the other hand, who create the same basic character over and over, yes, that has to be frustrating. I admit to having a fondness for thieves, and most of them started were homeless orphans, but the two I've played the most (Vanadia and now Dapple) are very different characters, though with similar skill sets.

On the other hand, I've tried a ranger, several clerics, a mage and at least two bladesingers

As for "elf with bow"...none of my elven or half elven characters have used a bow One's a cleric, one's a thief and the other two (technically sylvari) are bladesingers, who only learn the sword, to the exclusion of all other weapons.

Dapple had a dagger in hand, the blade balanced across her palm, ready to be thrown with deadly accuracy. At Arien’s words, her hand closed on the blade reflexively, and only the sturdy glove protected her from a bad cut. She trembled with the effort of holding herself back from attacking the Green and simply ending the standoff.

“He didn’t surrender, don’t make that mistake,” Dapple finally responded, her voice hoarse. “If he lives he will look to fight again. And it wouldn’t be murder…it would be justice. Any Green young enough to be serving has the blood of citizens on his hands. Take it from one who knows how the Emperor keeps his grip on the land.”

Dapple has a special place in her personal hell for Greens, so they don't live long around her...hehe...

Yanamari once ran an evil campaign set in Audalis. I played Rose Red, a cleric of Salerna, goddess of pain and torture. She was lawful evil, and very...um...spiritual

Let's just say that she began to scare even me, hehe

En’Aranthea was behind the captive, binding his hands, when Valendara spoke up. "If he makes a wrong move I will fry him where he stands." Fortunately, En’Aranthea’s face could not be seen by the man, as she was surprised by Valendara’s posturing. She continued her task of removing weapons and stooped to hobble the man’s ankles, and replied to Valendara in Sylvari, her tone mild.

“I’m not sure that’s necessary, my friend, as he appears firmly held by what our healer did. I did not think you were one to threaten a helpless person.”

Once Varuna’s spell fades, the man struggles a bit, but realizes that the ropes binding him are tied too well. "Aw right, then" he states. "Me an' Gob are a patrol. Cap'n Markos sends us out reg'lar as clockwork, 'e does. Mork an' Thull run a patrol like us, too." He grins, an unpleasant sight due to missing and greenish teeth. "Cap'n'll have 'em lookin' for you, now, seein' as how I won't be showin' up on time. 'Course, Gob got a good look at the lot of ya, so me mates'll know what to look for."

Apparently feeling there is no point in hiding anything, he continues to talk. "We light the light on the tower at night to get ships to run into the reefs. They sink, we row out, kill any surviviors, and take the loot. Cap'n's a genius... plenty 'o loot, and no need to risk our skin takin' it."

“What about the lighthouse keeper? What have you done with him,” En’Aranthea asked, her calm hiding a rising anger at the lives wasted by these wretches. The pirate gives a cruel grin. "Really now, what do you think 'appened to 'em?"

He pointedly looks the bladesinger up and down, a lewd expression on his face. "Tell ya what, luv... 'ow about you come visit me and my mates? I think you'd be right popular with the lads..."

En’Aranthea looks at him oddly at that, as the lewd reference escapes her, as she’s completely innocent, too young to have been awakened to love and it’s darker sisters. She refuses to let her anger over the dead influence her, however, as she was too well trained to be provoked into rash action.

“I will certainly be paying your “mates” a visit, and you will must definitely be joining us. As much as I’d prefer to drop you in a mudhole, that is not honourable.”

The bladesinger looked over to the two working over Dog. “How is our companion? Will we be able to move on? This man tells us that his colleagues will be coming for us soon, we must prepare and pick our ground to make a stand.”

With those words, she starts to look over her surroundings with an eye to strategy. Faced with greater numbers able to encircle them with crossbows, the group will need either higher ground, or some sort of barrier to protect one or more sides.

Charlie moves into the facility as the looey orders, making sweeps with eyes and gun sight as she steps carefully in the crouch that would let her move quickly in any direction. She looks around the garage in mixed surprise and dismay, and takes a big sniff of the air to determine if the charring was recent, or some time ago.

When the what the heck would you call it – a deathbot ? thing rose from the corner and moved to intercept them, the scientist in Charlie took a moment to marvel at it’s design and complexity while the soldier in her yelled, “Evasive action!” and she scuttled quickly to find some sort of cover, preferably behind something fire resistant.

A metallic voice emanates from within the robot. "Intruders detected," it speaks in a calm, unhurried manner. "Initiating protocol Gamma-four-six. Hostiles to be destroyed."

“End initiation,” Charlie yells, going on instinct while she tries to figure out how to counter this…this thing. “Security code: Tango-six-five-nine-nine-zero-one. Validate!”

While she hopes that might work, or at least confuse it’s programming…she eyes the thing and tries to guess where it might be most vulnerable. If the security clearance code for the facility doors doesn’t work (for that is what she called out, with the most common programming commands (OOC: forgive me, I’m no programmer!!!)) she’ll resort to firing at it, in single shot mode, aiming for sensors and any joins between the weapons turret and the main body.
