Subject: Shall we open a tab?

With her usual place taken by Char, Dapple found a corner that was well away from the elders and the bard, and settled her shoulders against the walls. If she had to be in plain sight, she preferred to have her back covered. Making such a deliberate and open action stopped her from pacing, which is what she really wanted to do. Pulling out one of her smaller knives to clean her nails siphoned off a little nervous energy, but not enough.

The elder that spoke the most had the best clothing, and the best jewelry, according to Dapple’s experienced eye. She amused herself by trying to estimate his likely net worth (adjusting for being a big fish in a small pond, of course) as he expressed surprise at Arien’s explanation of their presence. His provincial attitude became clear when he broadly hinted that they check on their priests for them.

“Hang on there, Fistele,” Dapple spoke up from her corner. She spoke without heat or rancor, but firmly. “Dwan paid us to check into your situation, and we’ve done so. The fact that you’re ok and all don’t mean we’re charged with anything more than turning around and kicking some messenger’s arse for getting his messages wrong. Arien will hem and haw and try to be noble about it, but if you want us to visit some priests in the back end of beyond, it’s on your tab. And we don’t take sightseers.”

In Peter’s brash youth, he’d sought to dominate all those around him, using charisma and an inborn sense of authority to lead his friends and hangers on, though resorting to bullying and scorn if necessary. He’d assumed that he was fit to lead, and so many had been charmed by him for so long, that he’s come to believe in it as a birthright.

Nearly dying on a battlefield near Sendria had cured him of such hubris. His long recovery had given him time to think, to reflect, and when he’d been asked to join the priesthood of Therassor, he’d seen an opportunity to redeem himself. Remembering his youthful assumption of leadership, Peter had been keeping quiet as the group discussed their options, but he began to understand that he needed to give voice to his ideas.

As Brandr and Derry braced the door open with a table, Noctus prepared to lead the way. Derry moved to join him as his side, but Peter spoke up.

“Hold Derry, you need time and space to work your spells, do you not? I’m better suited to fending off an attack with steel. Noctus has his his two blades, I have my sword, and I’ll warrant Brandr will step forward with axe and sword if need be.”

Peter looked at each member of te group, gauging their reactions to his speaking up. “It sounds like there may be something ahead, but we don’t know if they are friend or foe. I suggest we move to engage, and take them out quickly if they not be the palace residents or guests. “

Rerra tried to ignore the sinking of her heart as she looked upon what faced them. Ankhegs were bad enough, but if those trails were anything to go by, the Ankhegs were not alone. In fact, they may be in service to some other race, one that was humanoid. She stroked her braids thoughtfully as she pondered the implications, to be interrupted by Bohen’s own commentary and question.

“Abilities? Eh, well, fair enough, Runemasters may be known by reputation, but even reputations can be distorted by myth and stories. As a keeper of secrets, I’m prepared to defend the Kordaldrum people and culture with all my skills, and with my life if necessary. We’re workers of stone that can infuse Kharox’ divine gifts into our runes, and we can pray for his intercession as needed to. As warriors, we use slings for our rune carved bullets, but can go toe to toe with beasties and villains, both,” she concluded, patting her warhammer on her back.

“I say we move to free the prisoners and flee back the way we came. I’m not too quiet in this armour, but I can enclose us in silence to quiet our passage at least. It will likely have me draining Kharox’s patience with me, but I may be able to break the prisoners free of the stone. Fighting our retreat back, now, that I’d be needing some help with,” she smiled broadly.

My gaming time has sucked lately, what with there being a mere 24 hours per day, and work consuming too much of it.

I'll see what I can do this evening once the little one goes down for the night.

We don't need to have the mage play meatshield...I think I'm the most armoured and so I intend to step forward.

Dapple was a shadow among the party at the best of times, a fleeting image out of the corner of one’s eye or a whisper pf breath on the back of one’s neck. Now, it seemed as if she’d retreated entirely into her cloak, staring out from the depths of her hood and speaking to no-one. While the others spoke of their shared experiences, she simply stared off, and if asked about her own battle, she responded with a flat “It wasn’t ending well.”

While Valentine and the others talked about the possibility of time travel, Dapple pondered the impossibility of battling one’s own inner demon. How could whatever they faced have reached into her heart and known what she hated the most? What she feared the most? Unless …”that wasn’t…you, was it?” she silently asked the other presence within her, the one that had been absent during the battle.

No, snorted the dead voice within her nor was it you, little monster. You’re too hideous to even be a caricature of femininity. It was a distraction, nothing more. Bigger things are afoot than your minor problems.

Dapple nibbled at bloodless lips, eyes scanning the crowd that surrounded them in Helvorn. She should have felt relieved to be among buildings again, but she was still too raw. She clasped her elbows under her cloak and chanted her mantra of nothingness.

Fat lot of good it did her as the party entered the town hall. Char seemed determined to supplant her, taking the best spot in the corner, then the big gladiator hiding her stopped suddenly, forcing Dapple to sidestep before she trod on his heels.

“Bard,” stated Maximus, and the little rogue turned her head up to peer up at him sideways through blonde curls.

“Very good, Maximus, “ she stated drily,” we’ll have you using full sentences next.”

Subject: Rerra

After the battle, Rerra barely stopped for breath before summoning Gamultindar’s healing strength once more, this time for Bohen. Indeed, if it hadn’t involved chanting at the lowest register of her voice, Rerra would have waited to fill her lungs, as she could see Bohen wincing with each of his own breaths.

She held her hands on him long enough to feel the ribs slip back into place, then stepped back, wiping her hands on her cloak in a business-like fashion. Being in the arms of her God was not something easily left, so she blinked a few times, almost dreamily, as first Ilde introduced herself, then another female Khord joined the party.

“I wish the elders were here to see this,” she muttered to herself,” Women don’t leave the hearthfire for adventures, ha!”

“Well met, Ilde,” Rerra instead called aloud,” and well done! That was your influence stiffening our backs and stoking our courage, I’ll wager! Glad to have you at our sides, I’m Rerra Stoneheart, Khun-kharad. I’m for continuing on, as Bohen’s right; we don’t know how long the captives nor these tunnels will last.”

Rerra cast a quizzical eye at the second newcomer, taking in the platemail and beardless chin, but not commenting on the contradiction. She herself was a contradiction, a female Runemaster, and youngish to boot.

“As for finishing them off without ye, I can’t say that I was willing to wait for help unknown, but I’m glad of it arriving nonetheless. I do, however, like to know who’s at my side.”

Willow had to stifle the urge to pinch James, he was being so dense. It was so annoying when one was trying to be clever, but the others wouldn’t play along.

“Of course he does,” she murmured, giving James a playful swat on the arm,” except when it is to his advantage to not speak English. My mother spoke five languages except when she was mad at my father…then she only spoke Urdu. Really, James, you must get off planet more.”

She hoped that her mix of flattery and subtle slights would put James off balance, without actually getting him upset with her. She’d couldn’t be sure how well James understood Chinese, since he didn’t really answer her, so she’d have to play it carefully. If James was oblivious to her side conversation with Benny, she’d negotiate her own deal with him for the chess piece, otherwise she’d just let James make his best deal, then find a way to speak to Benny on her own.

It’s unlikely that Benny would have the white king with him, and James wouldn’t have been stupid enough to walk around town with a considerable sum of cash…I hope.

Edited to add: With that thought, she decided to have a plan B, or possibly this could be considered plan C. "James, dear, you did promise me a drink. Miss?" she waved gaily at the barmaid, "a bottle of your finest whikey over here, three glasses, please!"

Rerra heard the liquid gurgle coming from the beast and instinctively turned her face away, likely saving herself from greater damage as the acid spewed over herself and Odin. She knew all of them needed healing now, but she couldn’t pray while being attacked.

Gritting her teeth against the sting of the acid, she triggered the shied from her ring and tried to use it to batter the beast back, while continuing to rain blows with the warhammer.

Peter watched the woman dance and sing with surprise, and then pity. If she was ensorcelled, it was from a mighty spellcaster indeed to so trap a mind and leave the body unharmed. No, it was more likely the woman had come unhinged at whatever had managed to turn the others to stone. Peter had seen it too often in the aftermath of battle, when a mind had endured too much. It was a harsh thing to bind and gag her again, but it was likely for the best, so that they may get her to safety, and to help.

I agree, Derry,” the cleric said at last,” she can only bring herself and us to harm if we leave her like this.”

With the others, he helped to hold and bind her gently, all the while trying to soothe her with as gentle speech as a war priest could muster.

"Very important,” James replied to Willow’s “But I can’t tell you any detail or else B…, I mean I wouldn’t want to endanger you by telling you too much.”

He went on to describe the task Brigit had given him while Willow shivered theatrically and clasped his arm tighter. Inside, her heart sank as her suspicions were confirmed. She wasn’t sure why she disliked the redhead so much, but it was such a pure and intense mistrust that Willow couldn’t ignore it. Now, not only would she have to negotiate a deal under James’ nose, but it was more than likely that he’d be trying to obtain the same item.

Willow chattered with James as she considered her options. Somehow, she’d have to have a conversation with this Benny Xiau on a level that James couldn’t follow, without annoying or embarrassing him. She also couldn’t assume anything about Benny, but his name certainly implied Asian heritage…and that’s when Willow had a possible answer.

Nora Blake was a former showgirl trying to be the perfect lady, and Willow knew the upper classes frowned on Mandarin as a “common language”. It was entirely possible James had been forbidden to learn Mandarin, so he probably only knew a few curse words.

The former companion smiled to herself, and when James threw her a questioning look, she let her smile widen and told him how happy she was to be off ship on such a glorious day. I’ll have to play this carefully she thought to herself but once James heads towards his target, I’ll ask him quietly how well he speaks Mandarin, and offer to translate.

"Brandr, can you heal these wounds? I have the mages two healing potions, but it might be wise to hold those until we are out of healing spells. But they belong to all, so let me know if they are needed. We can't go on without some healing."

Peter shook his head in annoyance at Derry’s question to Brandr, then regretted the move when it caused nausea to roil his stomach. Guess I got my bell rung…it’s all rather foggy…

“Hold on, Derry, I’m dazed, not unconscious,” Peter called out as he struggled to his feet, armour trying to drag him down again,” Save those potions for another time.” Reaching his full stature, the world greyed out for a moment and he would have swayed if he weren’t so stubborn (and more than a little vain). Instead, he gritted his teeth and began to move about the group, checking each for injuries while ignoring his own.

“Crow, Ela, Noctus...hmm, the reputation of Syls for speed and craftiness remains intact, I see…not a scratch on the lot of you. Nor you, Derry, there’s some good luck there or handy dodging on your part. Brandr, big fellow, you appear to have the worst of it, let me have a look at that.”

OOC: If Brandr allows, Peter will clean the wound with wine and bandage it roughly with cloth torn from his sleeve (what can you expect, he’s a cleric of the god of war, not Florence Nightingale. Beside, no healer’s kit on the equipment list, hmmph!), then use cleric spells to heal Brandr. Only then will he clean his own wounds, ask for someone to bandage him, then spare a spell for himself, if any is left.

OOC to fellow players: Pardon the personality shift….going on how the character was written up, and may take me a while to get a feel for the character.

James blinked at Willow a few times, his handsome features marred by the slack surprise. “How did you know” he stammered and Willow realized that Emmett’s bar was as much his destination as hers. Before she could interject a distraction, James came to a decision, his expression becoming almost cartoonishly crafty.

“Why of course, my lovely lady. I understand completely now that we are no longer in the Black and your over protective band of brothers aren’t around anymore. As it just happens, I am going to that establishment myself for some personal business, and with you by my side, it can only go better for me. Shall we go then?” he says offering his arm.

Willow smiled agreeably, though inside, her heart sank, just that little bit. James’ comment about no longer being chaperoned by her crew didn’t worry her (Willow was always in command of the when and where of her liaisons, and this peacock of a boy wasn’t about to out-manoeuvre her!), but it would mean careful handling of his expectations. She had to wonder, however, that James and hers business dovetailed so neatly – perhaps too much so. She wasn’t nearly as skittish as the Captain-san, but sometimes a coincidence could be a connection you couldn’t quite see.

“I can help you?” Willow responded brightly, wondering what she had just gotten herself into.

”Are you doing something important? Oh, I bet it is! Do tell me, James, I find important men are oh so… ” and here her voice dropped to a throaty purr,”irresistible!”

Willow watched the mule with her menfolk drive away without her, tapping her parasol on the ship’s deck in annoyance. Here she was, all dressed up, with somewhere to go, and no escort to get her there. Of course she was capable of walking around by herself in most places, but Newhouse could be a bit rough, and she just might be a little too tempting on her own.

“Not that I didn’t try for simple and respectable,” she murmured, checking out her blurry reflection on the bulkhead wall. The slim black pencil skirt may have followed her curves closely, but most of Willow’s clothes did, and while the white blouse would be almost sheer in the sunlight, the dove gray silk vest buttoned over it covered anything she wasn’t willing to share. Her long hair was demurely done up in a bun, topped by a grey chapeau and netted veil that obscured her features slightly, but served to emphasize the perfection of her lips. Matching gloves and boots completed the picture of a lady of moderate means, exactly what Willow hoped would be good for a day in Newhouse.

James bustled by on his way out of the ship, and Willow brightened. The boy was a selfish twit, and mean, to boot, but vain and easily swayed. Willow’s smile was almost predatory as she glided after the popinjay, sliding her arm into his as if she’d always been there.

“James, darling,” she purred,” I almost gave up waiting for you. Where shall we go first? You look like you have somewhere to be, but perhaps you could take helpless little me to Emmet’s Bar, afterwards? I’m ever so thirsty for something that wasn’t distilled in the engine block.”
