Dapple's not gonna raise the issue again after being slapped down by Arien, but no one else is curious about the "spotty" intel from our ghostly friend? *shrugs*

May not have a chance to write up a post before tomorrow...so if anyone wants to assume in their post that I'd do a reconnaissance of the place under the cover of night, that would be a fair assumption

But it looks like I'll be having a busy year. Chicago in early April, Atlanta in late April, and that's only the stuff that's scheduled.

Dapple had watched and listened with a growing sense of disbelief and dismay as Jal appeared to argue with both the little rogue and some unseen entity. She would have replied with an angry retort when two simultaneous acts caused her words to hold fast. First, Jal wheeled away as if he could not discuss the matter further and Arien lashed out with uncharacteristic churlishness. Dapple’s teeth clicked together over an unspoken retort as she considered the situation.

The knight is angry because you spoke up in his place while he daydreamt. He trusts blindly and expects you to walk quietly into the slaughter… hissed the dark voice within. Dapple gathered herself within her cloak, ready to lash out at the least threat, when Jal’s words penetrated the haze of “kill or be killed” that instinct had lowered over her reason.

“…Thrown stones at me… spit on me… hid their children at the sight of me… called me..” Jal muttered. “…wanton.” whispered Dapple in a voice gone dry,” …bastard child of the town’s wanton…” Dapple frowned, furious at what Jal’s words implied. She’d hated what Tonno and his bullies had done to Sapphirine: had Dapple, in her fear and ignorance, become guilty of the same thing? Had she, in hating bullies, become one herself? Nonsense, he is clearly mad, determined to lead you all to a brutal death. You did right to call out his madness!

Dapple was not so sure, and she waved away Arien’s words with an angry gesture, but said no more to anyone. As Adrian explained what he could do for the group’s comfort, she nodded curtly, not trusting her voice, but did what she could to build a shelter for the horses and equipment. Settled within Adrian’s shelter, arms clasped around bent knees to use as little space as possible, she fixed her cold gaze on the so called “spooky” mage. He’d offered an explanation, and despite Arien’s disapproval, she wanted one.

I thought there was a distinction between Companions and your run of the mill pros/whores/strippers... Mal just used called Inara a whore to get under her skin. It is, in essence what she does, but could be so much more than that.

A high class escort service versus a back alley, drug addicted sex worker, if you know what I mean. After all, geishas had more to what they did than sex.

Does the guild control the entire sex trade? I had a very different understanding but hey, I romanticize everything

Subject: A bear...minor detail...hardly worth mentioning...

Dapple survived in a world where the odds were stacked against her by knowing when to run, when to fight, and when to bluff. None of those options seemed truly viable here, so under her rain-heavy cloak, she shivered with both cold and repressed adrenaline. When Talas stepped forward to place himself between Dapple and the oddling mage, Dapple almost laughed at the idea of her attacking a mage openly. She settled for a “you have got to be kidding” look towards the gladiator, but opened her hands and arms wide to show an absence of weapons.

But when your hands ARE your weapons, how do you disarm yourself? mocked the bitter voice within, but Dapple ignored it. Instead, she nodded grimly when Char said that he’d scout for the so called cave.

“Wynter…Wynter told me,” Spellbinder muttered from somewhat to the right of Talas “She… she tells me things… show me things…”

Dapple glanced quickly at Arien and then to Adrian, hoping they had more of a clue of what the mage was talking about. Arien had been very quiet of late, but he did have more experience with Alloryn’s magical ways than any of them, and well, Adrian was another mage. When she didn’t see a reaction from either of them (damn! Is being inscrutable part of a mage’s training?), she figured she was the only one rude enough to force the issue.

“Who or what is a winter?” she asked, but tried for a calmer tone to not provoke the gladiator. “Is that your familiar, or maybe one of those, uh, unseen servants? I’m thinking we don’t have another pseudodragon around or Sunset would have given some sign of it. So…”friend”…spill. I’ve had enough of your mutterings without a bit of explanation.”

Char thundered back at that moment, and his big horse slid to a halt within a few feet of Dapple. She sidestepped the spatter of mud thrown up by enormous hooves and gave Char a sour look. The ranger’s news, however, made her forget the near collision.

The mage’s stuttering explanation did nothing to actually explain, and Dapple’s blonde eyebrows crept higher and higher towards her hood edge as the man spoke. He plays games with your lives, and you would be fools to listen to his counsel!

“Intended any harm?” Dapple grated through a throat gone tight,” Let’s bunk with a bear and maybe we can sing him to sleep!? Are you mad? Do you think we are?”

Dapple couldn’t look at the fool anymore without her hands wanting to clench into killing fists, so she shook her head and instead looked at the others. Her rain-streaked face, framed with draggled curls, was angry, confused and somehow pleading.

Was on my work comp and don't want the rdinn blacklisted, so this is my first chance to see what's happened today.

Nice post, Blammm, I am getting a sense of Asher Rather than undermotivated, I think the boy's got more energy than he knows what to do with...would that be a fair assessment?

As to Dash's overview of crew relationships...that's a great idea, but I am afraid that I will likely have to play awhile with everyone before I really know how Willow interacts with everyone.

If it helps, Willow's no reader, but her training means she is good at reading body language and intuiting what someone feels or wants...so if she had been asking to many questions of Dash (or anyone else, for that matter), she'd have noticed the twitchy evasions and backed off gracefully.

As to the registry (are you sure you engaged a Companion? ...they're really expensive!), I think Alacrity and I will need to figure some things out. Willow's not an actual Companion, having left before completing her training (and more importanly, doesn't pay guild fees), so I think we'll need to resolve the "relations" between Willow and the Guild. I'd love to have my cake and eat it too (all the advantages of a being a Companion, hehe), but I doubt Big Al will allow it for the sake of game balance.

Subject: Picking up the threads of the game

The brief moment of almost companionship was past, and for Dapple, the wards were up, the drawbridge raised and the battlements fully manned. By the time Char returned with the cleaned and gutted birds, Dapple was lost in her own thoughts, her gaze haunted as she stared at the fire.

She portioned out her share of the spiced flesh with the dragonet, watching with cold amusement as the little creature stuffed itself beyond the ability to fly. “You assume that I’ll take care of you if you can’t fly away from danger,” she thought at the pseudodragon, wondering if it could hear her thoughts. “But I guess you are right at that.”

As Dapple settled for the night in a corner of the Waymeet, back firmly against the wall and facing the door, she wondered about Sunset's seeming attachment to her. She did nothing to keep the dragon with her, nor to even attract it’s attention, but still it seemed to return to her after visiting briefly with the others. Your hands set it free whispered the dry voice within, but it is still caged within its mind. Once the creature realizes it is truly free, it will be gone.

“Everyone leaves eventually,” she muttered to herself. “I don’t care.”

Next day

The constant rain hammered at Dapple’s mood, and the condition of the Waymeet sunk her into a deeper gloom. Trying to tell herself that she felt nothing was hard when she was soaked to the skin, and she had started to shiver, pale flesh rising in goosebumps. When Jal spoke up about a cave, she felt a brief thrill of excitement, replaced by a chill colder than that of her wet skin.

“How the hell do you know that, Spellbinder,” she asked coldly,” when Char does not? You don’t strike me as someone who left the city to stroll the countryside.” Unfriendly eyes bored into Jal’s, demanding an answer.

OOC: Not posting anything about the bear, as I assume Char went scouting alone, and so is the only one who knows about it.

The details of WIllow's character sheet pretty much sum up what the others know of her: posh family, incomplete Companion training, almost complete medical school training.

She hasn't had to use her butterfly hairpin around the others, so they don't know that it is anything but a hairpin, but she has assured the captain that she is not completely defenseless. She has made it quite clear, however, that she won't joining any bar fights

She takes the confidentiality of her former clients very seriously, however, so while she may share an amusing anecdote, she doesn't give details. She'll trail off or smile mysteriously if she realizes she's getting close to revealing something she shouldn't.

As for any other secrets, well, EVERY interesting woman has them...I just haven't found out Willow's yet

Vanadia the wife is not nearly as pretty as Willow the character, but Alacrity is a sweet hubby for alluding to otherwise. However, both Vanadia and Willow can handle the heat in the kitchen, thank you

Ogle away, m'dear...Willow dresses for attention after early failed attempts to go unnoticed. Just don't bother bringing her along on covert ops; swans tend to stand out, then, too!

And as for what happens on ship...even former companions pick their clients, not the other way around Both doctors and companions sense what their patients need and provide the appropriate care...but it's what they need, not what they may want (ooo! that's kinda good...I'll have to work that into a fututre post).

It's not love that keeps a ship in the air, it's sexual tension

Seriously, I am loving the characters, and that will drive my enjoyment of the game as much as the plot! Great posts, all!

Subject: Me too!!!!

The measured cadence of Pachabel’s Canon drifted through the scented air of Willow’s room, the soft strings and flute seeming to caress the sheer silk draperies hung about to soften the cold angularity of steel walls. Willow was about to perform a delicate operation, and it needed a clear mind, calm nerves and steady hands. A timeless hour in the lotus position had helped with mind and nerves, and brushing her hair out with one hundred brush strokes had steadied her hands with its soothing, repetitive motion.

She stared down at the clean instruments arrayed on the white cloth before her and took a few last cleansing breaths. At the moment of complete and utter readiness, one hand plucked the implement from the table, the other stretched her left eyelid into a straight edge, and the false eyelash was glued into place. Matching the right set of lashes perfectly, she gave them a test flutter as she checked the results in the mirror.

“There we are! They can put a man on every moon between here and the back end of nowhere, but eyelash enhancement hasn’t changed since my granny’s day! Where are the priorities, I ask?” she murmured at the tiny Buddha in his shrine beside her mirror, and patted his belly indulgently before finishing her elaborate eye makeup.

Her timing was precise, as she had just finished all the tasks that required delicacy before Dash touched down on Beaumont, light as a feather. She stood up and stepped back from the mirror to review the entire result critically, turning this way and that, and nodded with some satisfaction. Dodger was a Rastafarian, and like many of the men from the long lost Caribbean islands, he appreciated fine booty over long legs or ample cleavage. With that in mind, Willow had chosen the deep maroon salmar kameez over sheer wrapped dulpatta pants. The long tunic looked demure enough for walking through town, with its long sleeves and high beaded neckline, but the precise fit of the tunic and the iridescence woven into the textile caused a shimmering glow around the curve of hips and buttocks in what she hoped would be a highly distracting manner. With her hair up in elaborate coils around the butterfly hairpin and the sheer dupatta draped as a veil, Willow would look all lady, but her walk would be pure woman.

“Willow,” Wyatt called from immediately outside her door, and before she could respond, pounded on the bulkhead in what passed in the Sung household for politeness.

Muttering a quick prayer of thanks that she’d already finished with eyeliner, Willow pressed a finger to the small frown line starting to appear between shaped brows, willing it back into smoothness. “Yes, Captain?” she called back out musically, thumbing the com open, “You bellowed?”

“Try an’ git a meet set up with Dodger will ya? Royale’s docked next door an’ she looks a bit worse fer the wear. Dash ‘n me’re gonna go see if Griffith’s hangin’ somewhere’s about. The jien huo owes me some cash-funds that might just turn this gorram mess int’ something shiny… maybe.”

Willow rolled her eyes at the mirror and shook her head with one part affection and three parts exasperation. She’d had ten days of burn from Bellephore to plan her dealing with Dodger, and Captain was asking her to arrange the meeting now. At least he does not tell me how to sew up wounds…

“Dodger has already accepted my request to visit…anytime after sundown will do…and do give my regards to Griffith…he’s a dear. “

“Thanks,” Wyatt was already stomping away from the com as he spoke. “Yer a peach.”

“Oh, yes, my dear Captain,” Willow murmured to herself as she thumbed off the com port, “ I am a complete peach…fuzzy bits and all.” She laughed merrily and turned to her array of perfume bottles. Some of them were sadly getting low, but there was enough Blue Sun No 5 for a light touch at wrists, nape of neck and the backs of knees…maybe there’d be time to hit the triplex and pick up some supplies….

Willow hummed happily to herself as she continued the thousand small abulations that a natural beauty needed to be presentable in fine company.

Being a non-fighting type, writing up my character sheet was fairly easy After buying the sort of things that a former companion and almost doctor would have (lots of clothes, cosmetics and medical supplies), I'll be putting 1,000 credits towards my share of the ship. Alacrity also agreed that the balance of my medical tuition went towards installing an operating theatre on the ship, so we have, for what it's worth, a sick bay.

Given the investment in the ship, I'd like to claim dibs on the second double cabin. Otherwise, every other spare storage space on ship will be overflowing with Willow's clothes

Willow is a lovely Eurasian mix of Japanese, East Indian and Irish (some missionary way back in the time of Earth that was, I guess)...so wide set, almond shaped eyes of a startling green shade with ivory skin and jet black hair. Full lips and arched brows from her mother's side, and just a touch of wavy curl in the long hair.

She's a dancer and yogi, so lithe and gentle curves rather than voluptuous and with her ancestry, put her at no more than 5'3" (she'd say she's travel sized). Delicate hands and feet and a tiny waist.

For a formal portrait, she'd be demurely lovely, hair worn up in a geisha's bun and a sweet smile on her lips. Informally, there's be a wicked grin, laughing eyes and hair tumbling everywhere... so I leave it to your artistry, Bromern!

Subject: Meet Willow

Since we are making introductions, I guess I may as well go next. My name is Willow Sunipta Takahara, and maybe I’m having a little trouble figuring out what I want to do when I grow up. My folks are comfortable, what with Mother a Bollywood televid star and Father a salaryman, but I’m the baby of the family, and maybe I’ve been indulged too much.

I’ve always had a loving, touchy-feely sort of way about me, and the boys seemed to like that about me. Actually, more than a few girls did, too. Somehow, I never really got “involved” with anyone, though, and managed to stay friends with most of them, so I thought I’d become a Companion. Mother and Father were startled, but they pony’d up the tuition and sent me on my way. I think the sex part made them uncomfortable, but the prestige and face that I’d bring the family would have helped with the discomfort.

I liked the training, and I seemed to have an aptitude for it, and already knowing the sitar, the flute, yoga and traditional Hindu and Japanese dances helped me move up the beginner ranks quickly. It helped that I adore just about everybody and nothing made me happier than helping someone feel good. Novitiate Companions can acquire clients and I was starting to build a respectable list, when it happened.

A fancypants bossman thought that he’d paid for my soul along with my company, and while he didn’t hurt me (he wasn’t that much the fool) it hurt my feelings to be treated like a thing. When I tried to speak to my teacher, she told me I was a silly girl, and that Companions used inner discipline to endure the boors. Well, I didn’t like that and didn’t think I could look past the nice outsides of folks when they had darkness on the inside.

So… I left. I cashed out what was left of my tuition and headed for home. On the way, I met a real pretty doctor with good hands and a polite way between the sheets. He made me realize that healing was an even better way to make people feel good, and my companion skills helped with that, too. I switched ships after kissing my pretty man goodbye and headed to medical school.

I needed more money from my folks, and for some reason, they weren’t really happy with my decision. I guess they had been looking forward to having their beautiful daughter introduced as the Companion of important people. Maybe the need for more money was the problem, but like I said, I’m their jade-eyed baby and the money was sent by wave.

Medical school was kind of dull after Companion training, but the learning part was fun. I couldn’t decide what part of medicine I liked best, so I learned a little bit of everything, like nibbling at a buffet of education. I worked my way through my fellow students, as well as a few teachers, and then it happened.

One of the teachers I respected most was in the habit of indiscreet pillow talk. I couldn’t stop my ears from hearing how much of the money for the medical school came from the government, and how the school did research in return for the funding. When I heard what they were doing to those poor, smart kids with the special brain pans, I couldn’t stand the pain in my heart and soul. So…I left, with one year left to graduation.

I had a little money left, and my folks have told me that it’ll have to do for now. I think I really annoyed them with leaving again, and they are not going to throw good money after bad. So maybe I need to set some roots, and learn to stick through the bad instead of just enjoying the good.

Buying a share in a ship seems like a good plan, where I have a stake in something, and can’t run away. The ship itself runs away for me, though, in case things really do get bad. There is something about the Cap’n and crew that draws me, too, that made me want to be with them. They need me and my healing….and not just for the rips and holes that life in the black tends to give a body. Some of them are broken, and I think I can mend that. At least, I’m willing to try.

Sunset appeared to forget her fright, or more likely, set it aside to figure out later. The dragonet settled into the folds of Dapple’s cloak, nibbling on a finger and radiating a reminder that spicy sausages were still much desired. That left Dapple little reason to ignore Char, and she looked over at him, then the two mages, her glance as always sliding away before it could provoke a return look. She looked down at her booted feet as she answered the ranger.

“They’re mages, Char,” she replied quietly,” and so are different from ordinary folk like us. Alloryn’s a noble, and her magical talents just made her more arrogant, but Arien kept her grounded, I think. With these two, who knows what drives them, or how they will be when things get tough. I mean, why would a mage, with all that power at his fingertips, carry around a sword?”

Dapple wondered at her own daring, speaking so much at once, and she waited for the lash of disapproval from within to silence her. Before she could say anything more, she lifted her head and spotted Jal approaching. She gave Char a discreet nudge with her elbow before turning an expressionless face up at the ragged spellcaster standing before them.

“Forgive the intrusion, gentlemen,” the youngish mage spoke tentatively, “I thought, perhaps, a bit of seasoning might serve to make those birds all the more tasty.” Dapple’s sensitive ears caught the sound of his stomach rumbling as he held out the bundle he had prepared, a look of uncertainty on his smudged face. “I…if you like,” he suggested, “I…I could help to cook…”

“Cooking would be good…I’m used to getting my meals in a tavern, not doing for myself,” Dapple replied, making a face at the dead, denuded birds at her feet, “Maybe if we really spice up one of these birds, we’ll get Sunset out of our heads and bellies for a while. “ A crooked smile lit up her sharp features in the firelight before fading away.
