Topic: yet another movie thread...
Subject: When religious freedom becomes oppression...

... that's when I draw the line. A boycott because of content? That's fine as long as it is an informed call to action. When the group calling for the boycott hasn't bothered to see the film...then I have a problem. On the other hand, i have persistently boycotted all the torture-movies-that call-themselves-horror-flicks without seeing a single one, but I'm not pushing for others to observe my beliefs (or taste).

I'm christian, yet when our school board banned the book, I was really upset. We bought our daughter the book as I believe in debate and an open exploration of ideas.

Subject: Blake

Charlie relaxed slightly when Kernan walked out with the two exhausted soldiers, but only slightly. The soldiers were punchy with all they’d been through, and she hadn’t been ordered to stand down.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the medic approach and ask to speak, Charlie granting permission with a nod.

"I've been listening to the goings on and thinking that what is reality for these men is not our reality…, Inga began. As she continued, Charlie’s penciled brows rose toward her hair and she turned her ice blue gaze onto the medic. To hear her own suspicions voiced made them sound, well, all the more crazy.

“Easy there, Johanssen, I’m the flake in this unit,”Charlie responded uneasily.”I’m open to all possibilities, but I’ll eliminate the mundane ones first. As the great Sherlock Holmes has said, When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth. But, he has also advised that it is a capital mistake to theorize in advance of the facts.”

When quoting one of her heroes, Charlie affects a tony English accent, returning to her own to conclude, “We’ll have to wait and see.”

Charlie quivered with the need to find answers, but waited for orders from the looey.

Subject: Responding to Valendara

Vallendara’s words and tone surprised the bladesinger, and it gave her pause. She’d been so concerned over Varuna’s crisis of faith that she’d failed to see the mage’s crumbling self-assurance. That could be fatal for a mage: her teacher Kiirar had explained that what appeared to be arrogance in mages was an immense sense of self and confidence needed to wield arcane powers and elementals.

“Do not doubt your worth, mellon amin ”, En’Aranthea responded softly, her eyes full on Valendara, “we have not yet needed skills such as yours. That time will come soon enough, and you will acquit yourself with honour, I know it in my very bones.”

The bladesinger took the mage’s hand in her own, and the two of them looked down at their joined hands; one calloused and strong, the other slender and faintly ink-stained. “Don’t wish that you’d taken another life path,” the bladesinger continued,” we each have made choices that have shaped us. Once I saw a bladesinger dance for my parents, I could be nothing else. I’m sure you felt the same about magic.”

I think the funniest part is the last line:
"DM: Okay. You said it twice. Here's what happens "

Makes it clear that the player is in the habit of doing dumb things

Not sure if they are cliches, but I see them too often:

Chaotic Neutral = crazy (excuse for gonzo gaming)
A mage who's also a great fighter (wait a minute, don't both career choices take a heck of a lot of training? When does he sleep?)
Excessive number of locked and trapped doors - how do the guards and wandering monsters (don't get me started on those)move around without setting off these traps?

Subject: A plan taking shape

En’Aranthea listened to the mage and cleric discuss what they could, and could not do,in any potential fight, and she winced inwardly when Tal’Anor pressed the point of killing with the cleric. I love my cousin dearly, but he has the tact of a badger.

“I would not want you to act against the wishes of your Goddess,” En’Aranthea interjected smoothly,” you are a giver of life, not one who should be asked to take it. I merely wanted to know what we would have as our advantage. Making all of us able to approach without a sound will do nicely,” she concluded with a graceful nod.

“Your ability to send the pirates to sleep is definitely of interest,” the bladesinger turned to address Vallendara,” as a bloodless capture would be my desire. I have no wish to kill for it’s own sake, or as the only means to exact justice, but I doubt they will simply leave. They have grown fat on their plunder, and will only return once we move on. They must surrender or be taken.“

“As for the Sla’kar, I suggest this: Varuna was able to establish rapport with the Sla’kar earlier, so I believe he should be our spokesperson. Either Tal’Anor or I will accompany him, and backtrack our journey in hopes of making contact and enlisting their aid.”

“Successful or not, the party is back here, ready to approach the pirate camp after nightfall. Whichever of us does not go with Varuna stays with Vallendara, to protect her as she studies for the night’s efforts.”

“When we attack, Varuna helps us move silently, and Vallendara sends as many as possible into sleep. Tal’Anor and I shall endeavour to get the leader under our control, and it is my hope that they will surrender at that point. If we have the help of the lizard folk, they must agree to allow the pirates to surrender, and their numbers will be useful in handling captives.”

En’Aranthea took a deep breath and waited for the responses of her friends, trying to hide her nervousness. While she had been trained flawlessly for solo combat, bladesingers were taught to lead others in battle, but she’d thought she’d have more time before having to do so.

1. We left in car to drive Veronica to daycare before starting the move - got a flat tire.
2. I got out of car to walk Veronica the rest of the way to daycare while Al fixed the flat - she forgot to put on shoes and I had to carry her.
3. At the end of a really long day (never move out of downtown Toronto during the World Cup), we discovered that we'd moved bags of trash and left bags of clothes on the curb at the old place.

Topic: The Guiding Light
Subject: En'Aranthea

En’Aranthea made careful note of the pirate camp, from the armour and weapons worn by the two guards to the cutlasses carried by all. The cook may be a non-combatant, but the bladesinger would make no assumptions. When she’d seen enough, she edged back silently, then headed back to the others, not a single blade of grass moving to betray her passing.

She thought about what she’d seen as she traveled, so that when she reached the lighthouse she was ready with her words, as awkward as Common felt on her tongue.

“My friends, gather round so that I may share what I have learned,” she began, taking a stick to draw a rough map of the camp in the dirt. She described the layout, the eight men, their weaponry and armour.

“The pirate who left our new friend to be captured was not there, and they do not appear to be aware of us as a threat. Either the pirate who escaped has deserted them or was lost to the bog. Certainly, they do not appear alarmed by the missing patrol. All eight are up and active, and no-one was at rest for a night watch. Either they do not post one, or they watch tired. This confident arrogance can work for us if we strike at night.”

“Vallendara and Varuna, “the bladesinger turned to them with a quizzical look,” I do not know what spells you may be able to use, but anything to confuse the pirates, slow them or even disable them would help to even the odds, “ she smiled bitterly, “Especially against crossbows. Bladesingers use no missile weapons, so I must close to fight. Tal faces the same challenge, all the more reason to strike at night and reduce the effectiveness of crossbows. ”

“Make no mistake, my friends,” En’Aranthea paused to take each person’s gaze with her own, her lovely young face grim,” these pirates will fight without honour, but I will. If any of them offer surrender, we must accept, but guard against treachery. I will not have us kill any who no longer offer resistance, so that they may face the justice of their own race, back in town. If they do not accept capture, however, “ and here her expression turned stony with resolution,” they will have to face Kith-Jora’s justice.”

“Thoughts? Questions? Ideas? Let us have them now. Vallendara suggested the lizard folk. If we decide to do so, we have time before evening to try to find one of them.”

Thanks for the post, there was lots of detail. Of course, I want more, though You specifically mention two men with crossbows... is one of them the fellow who eluded us, or is he unaccounted for? How are the others armed, if they are indeed armed? (trying to get an idea of the number of missile weapons versus melee). Are any of them wearing armour?

Lastly, I take it the tower is in full view of the camp itself? No way to sabotage it without being seen?

At the schoolhouse, Willow let the captain take the lead, giving herself the opportunity to study the woman before them. She was beautiful, no question, but Willow did not suffer from the sense of rivalry that was the root of jealousy. Instead, Willow was able to admire her loveliness, as if enjoying a flower or a work of art.

“Work of art is more apt,” Willow thought to herself,” as those clothes are not a casual choice. You want to draw the eye, don’t you, my pretty? Is it simply vanity, or is there more to you than pleasingly meets the eye?”

Murmuring about the heat of the day, Willow draws a silk fan from her obi and opens it, fanning herself lightly. The gestures obscures and reveals her eyes, letting her watch the woman closely without seeming to. Few Companions were true Readers, and Willow was not one of them, but the training included understanding a client’s unspoken desires and motives, using body language and other cues. Willow put those powers of observation to work now.

Blake noted the sour look on Kernan’s face when she spoke of the odds and shrugged. At least he listened to her...or had been thinking along the same lines, as he told the men inside that the others would open fire if he was harmed. “If this were a computer game, I’d be saving right about now,” Blake muttered quietly to herself.

With nothing to do but wait for a response inside the observatory, Blake eased her weight on the balls of her feet and thought back to the robot bits she’d salvaged. The metal was like nothing else she’d seen before, but she’d need a mass spectrometer to learn anything more about it. More puzzling was that she’d been unable to find anything resembling a CPU in the blasted ‘bot…what was running the thing? Unless it was being controlled remotely, with cameras used for observation…

With the end of that nanosecond, Blake snapped her attention back to the here and now. Checking the garage for surveillance equipment would have to wait. If things did not go well for the LT, Blake’s deadly marksmanship might be necessary.
