Subject: Hate Friday the 13th

Whether it was a case of good or bad luck, my sister nearly died on a Friday the 13th. The story itself makes the case for it being bad luck, but an optimist would point out that she survived, which was against considerable odds.

My sister and her boyfriend were leaving an apartment building at the same time two kids were horsing around on the roof, 21 stories up. They decided it would be hilarious to toss cinder blocks off the roof onto the sidewalk, and one struck my sister. It fractured her skull, shoulder blade and collarbone, and put her into a coma.

HOWEVER...she's alive and able and Mighty Miss V's coolest aunt.

Willow drew musicians to her side as a flower draws bees, and she used their jostling for position around her as an opportunity to look around. The crowds, originally a kaleidoscope of faces and colours, were drifting apart into discernable groups. The miners, in their checked flannel and worn denim, looked sheepish around the finely dressed merchants, while the townspeople looked askance at the Asian Tong. The Tong, flowing around everyone as gracefully as water, seemed to ignore all while missing nothing.

You could shake a salad dressing all you wanted, Willow mused, but eventually the oil and vinegar separate.

Her jade green eyes were drifting back to the portly drummer in front of her when she spotted a rider approaching her, his horse guided carefully through the thinning crowd. He was older, but still a fine figure of a man, and Willow found herself fighting a blush.

“Good Afternoon Ma’am.” He stopped and gave Willow a respectful bow that touched her heart, “Did I hear you say you were a medic? I am Doc McQuire, and if it is not too bold of me to say, you are the prettiest medic I have seen in many a years. Perhaps we can look at these fine gentlemen together.”

Willow recognized the quiet authority in his voice, one that brooked no argument. She returned his bow with a graceful one of her own, and gave him her full smile. “I would be honoured, Doctor, if I could assist you in your care of your people.” As the doctor came closer, she took in his clean scent of soap and linen, and told herself sternly to behave. Instead, she watched him sideways through her lashes, pondering the deep sadness that had etched lines of care around his eyes and mouth.

“I don’t believe anyone has more than a bruise or a few scratches, but perhaps….Merciful Buddha!” Willow stopped, wide eyed as she saw a bright flash and the ground shook beneath her feet.

Dapple runs a sprint and throws herself into the air, feet first towards the Mantis Leader. The attack misses the leader but she lands a solid blow on the Ankheg mount, breaking through carapace. She tumbles from the attack to avoid a vicious bite from the giant insect. The Thri-kreen does not attack Dapple but uses its staff to cast a spell skyward.

Dapple tumbled away from the Ankheg’s bite, the monster moving quickly despite the blow Dapple had dealt it. The resounding crack of breaking carapace had been satisfying, but not as gratifying as an outright kill would have been. Idly, Dapple worried if bug guts were corrosive; she’d have to check her boots closely after this.

The Thri-kreen astride the Ankheg ignored the commotion and pointed its staff into the air, presumably to cast a spell. Grimly, Dapple drew the last of her daggers and closed with the Ankheg once more, aiming kicks and punches at its limbs. If cracking its carapace wouldn’t bring it down, Dapple would just have to disable it, limb by limb.

(OOC: Ok, just so you don’t think Dapple is a cold hearted, self centered brat (though, for the record, she IS), my thinking is that she didn’t see Jal fall. When a bug three times your size is looming over you and trying to kill you, you don’t really have time to look anywhere else.)

A wise man once said that humor is tragedy plus time, but it was going to take a lot of time before today seemed funny. Willow watched, heart in mouth and hands to her face, as the “heroes” plowed through a crowd, scattering people and musical instruments everywhere.

“What in the name of Wuh De Ma were they is such a hurry about? They could have killed someone!” the man Willow assumed to be JW shouted. The former Companion glided out of the cargo bay with more speed than was perhaps seemly, and approached JW with hands out wide.

“You must be JW,” Willow said loudly, taking his hands in her own and leaning in to air-kiss the startled man on both whiskery cheeks, As she did so, she said quietly, ”Best get your men together and follow that mule. We got a distress call from one of ours, and he was headed to the bank with your woman.”

Finishing the kiss, Willow continued brightly,” I’m the ship’s medic, I’ll have a look at these brave musicians. C’mere boys, lets have a look at any boo boos!”

As JW reacts to her words, Willow surrounds herself with the musicians from the band, looking over their hurts (real and imaginary) and cooing over their bravery and quick thinking in such danger. With the kimono fluttering silkily as she moved and her butterfly pin sparkling in the sun, Willow looks like an exotic bird among barnyard fowl.

OOC: If any are truly hurt, she’ll ask Trish to fetch her med kit to the cargo bay, knowing the woman won’t want to step out where she can be seen clearly. Otherwise, she’ll use her charm to smooth over any ruffled feathers in the crowd.

Perhaps we could revive Caterina? She's definitely well rounded as a charrie, and if she dies...well, she already considers herself to be living only through the grace of Rydor.

When Kernan started thinking out loud, Charlie listened, while still feinting at the system’s security and watching its reactions. When Kernan talked about the station being full of eggheads, she snorted, drawing the lieutenant’s eyes.

“And here you’re thinking that you’ve just got the one lonely ol’egghead and we’re outnumbered? Don’t worry, boss, I’m probably worth a few of them at least…why do you think the Man keeps me on such a tight leash? And you're kinda smart for a sol... Anyway, go on…I’m listening, sir.”

Kernan went on to muse that the scientists would have thought to power down the station and that it must have failed, and Blake felt the need to interject.

“Hang on boss, some of us techs don’t thrive outside the lab. Something catastrophic happens, especially something real fast, they just can’t deal, man. It’s like, total system failure, commence memory dump and they’re useless in a crisis. We haven’t found bodies, so I’m thinking they’re all herded someplace we haven’t reached yet. Getting to the station for a power down is worth a shot because our boys may not have had a chance to try before the real doo-doo hit the oscillator.” She paused and thought a moment, chewing the black lipstick off her lips pensively.

“Better make it a selective brown out if we can…it’ll be awful cold and dark, and I can’t get into Moriarity here’s brain if he’s powered down, too. Lemme check the wiring schematics and see if we can’t be choosy about what goes dark.”

Blake had continued typing while talking, but had triggered a keyboard trapper to record her keystrokes. She set the trapper on replay, so that the laptop continued it’s onslaught on the security system while she opened up the wiring schema in another window.

OOC: Looking for a way to only turn off power in the main lab

Green armed Green attacking Arien, and having the upper hand. Reds attacking and turning invisible. Alloryn writhing in the grip of some unknown entity, and enough power around to topple a tower. Could the odds get more impossible, Dapple wondered darkly.

She was answered with the appearance of the Ankhegs, Mantis and Dragonflies. Oh look, they brought friends, taunted the dead voice within, time to cut your losses and get out of here.

Her stomach churning in anticipation of new pain, Dapple drew and launched daggers at the leader of the Thri-Kreen, launching herself after them in a vicous flying kick.

En’Aranthea listened to the slaa’kar with a growing sadness. She would not judge them for their seeming savagery; she did not live their lives among the swamps and knew not what tough choices they faced every day.

“If death is your only choice,” Varuna said softly, “then we must find another ally.” He bowed deeply to the Slaa’kar. “Thank you for your time.. But we must accomplish this mission without your aid.”

The bladesinger agreed, but felt she must make one last attempt to explain themselves to the slaa’kar. “I would not hesitate to kill them all,” she answered, looking the largest slaa’kar directly in the face, but giving the other two a measure of her gaze,” if I were certain that all of them are guilty of the murders. Some may not have taken part, and not all pirates are willing members of the band. Some may be captured seafarers given the choice of joining or dying. Without any way of knowing guilt from innocence, I must give them the chance to surrender.”

She shook her head and forced a smile on her face through her disappointment.” We must head back, then, if you will not join us. I thank you for considering our request, and for granting passage through your lands. I hope that we shall pass through once more again, on our way home with prisoners.”

She waited a last moment for the Slaa’kar to reconsider, then with a graceful bow, she headed back to camp with a rueful shrug to Varuna.

Willow left the others and headed to her room to remove the confining obi and retie the kimono more comfortably, mulling over the meeting with the old Shepherd tomorrow morning. What does one wear to visit a Shepherd? One that appears to have the local Tong doing his bidding? Some assumptions one would normally make about a Shepherd clearly didn’t apply here.

Then, of course, was the matter of Fenris. A new crewmember meant that Willow would have to give The Talk. It was something she and the Captain had agreed upon before she’d started as ship’s doctor, and so, each member of the Rocinante had received The Talk. Asher had blushed scarlet and mumbled that such a thing had never entered his mind, and Sam had grinned widely and claimed the same thing, but the rueful shake of his head betrayed the lie. Even Kora and Trish weren’t exempt, as Willow would assume nothing about a person’s tastes and inclinations. Kora had listened, wide eyed and bemused, then thanked Willow politely, and Trish, well, Trish had just stared Willow down with that look of hers, before softening and patting her on the cheek.

Willow was just considering whether to seek out Fenris now or after he’d had a chance to look over the ship when the comm. blared to live, nearly startling Willow out of her skin.

Asher! Git your kit, an' move like you're burning for atmo, son! Wolf, git on up to the mule, and fire 'er up. Sam might be in a fix, so we're goin' in hot! MOVE! Wyatt bellowed through the comm., before the decking clanged resoundingly with the sound of running men.

“Now what?” Willow wondered, poking her head out of room to be sure she wouldn’t get run down. Trish was in the gangway, looking as startled as Willow felt, but the older woman just shrugged and grabbed her pink shotgun out of her room, turning to head to the cargo doors.

"Willow, Trish," Wyatt contacted the ship. "Lock down tight an' don't let no one in 'less I say as much, dohn-ma?"

“Me play hero?” muttered Willow to herself,” Perish the thought! Someone’s got to be ready to put the king’s men back together again!”

Shaking her head to ignore the worry gnawing at her heart, Willow headed to the cargo bay to secure the doors if Trish hadn’t already done so. Once the doors were locked and Trish at the ready, Willow will ready her medical kit. With the way their luck had been running, her skills would be needed shortly.

Bromern also posted thst Kernan looked over at Blake as you were giving the report, which reinforced my impression that I could hear you. It also seemed that he was looking for input from me, so either I heard you, or the LT had to repeat what he heard to me.

“Blake, let’s get this data unlocked. C’mon now.”

“Tap dancing as fast as I can, Boss,” Charlie responded, her eyes glued to her laptop screen. If the LT watched long enough, he’d see she’d stopped blinking, so intent was her gaze. She had the ESOD whirring away it’s repetitive override attempts, and she’d connected her laptop to the PC with another USB cable. She started up a virtual machine within her laptop and set it to running her more complex hacks, taking over the USB port as it’s COM port.

She pulled a firewire from her tech’s bag and connected the laptop again to the PC, and opened a command line. Here, she began sending what looked like internal messages to the PC. Her hope was that with two “intruders” keeping the black ice reacting, her “internal” messages might find a way into the OS. One pigtail end made it to her lips, and she nibbled on it thoughtfully as she watched the system’s reactions for any loopholes in security.

”Lieutenant, it is Kane,” Monty looked up from the screen where he was attempting to gain access to the security disks. ”We have reached the main lab, and its status is as follows.”

Kernan glanced over at Blake as the Staff Sergeant relayed their findings, and the description of the room. Shaking his head he muttered under his breath, “Damn science fiction…”

Charlie flickered her ice blue gaze over to Kernan briefly before returning back to her glowing screen. “Well now, Boss,” she drawled distractedly, a lopsided grin lighting her features,” here I was about to mutter about damned jarheads blasting at anything they don’t unnerstan’!

“Have them look for the power source for that field generator, as I’m sure that’s what it is. Otherwise, I gotta get through this security to see if I can shut it down with a command.”

When the captain offered up one of his rare smiles, Willow caught her breath as the bottom of her stomach fell away. Fortunately, Sung turned away at that moment to scan his surroundings, ever on guard, so Willow could regain her composure.

“Merciful Bhudda! “ she thought to herself,” we have to get that man back among the living! He’s been bedding a ghost long enough!”

Willow shook her head at the thought, however, knowing Sung would do what he wanted, when he wanted, and trying to change that would be like trying to change an asteroid’s course. She put the moment aside and continued to walk at his side.

That’s when the young man approached them, bowing and proffering a note to Willow. She accepted it and read the brief contents as the young man left. “Looks like I have an appointment in the morning, Captain-san. I presume it will take that long to find and load cargo for our departure?”

Willow noted the other ship as she spoke, paying close mind to the man she guessed to be JW. She wanted the measure of a man that could command such attention from the townfolk, while stating that he didn’t want it. “Those best suited to power, “ she mused to herself, ”are those who least want it.”

That’s when the girl ran past, coming from the Rocinante. Willow watched her go, noting that while she was crying, she wasn’t hysterical and she appeared physically unharmed. “Asher’s breaking hearts again, “ she murmured to the captain, “how he does it while staying on board the ship is a wonder.”

Willow dismissed that matter as a curiosity, no more, and turned her attention to the question of Brigit and the upcoming meeting with the old Shepherd.

Topic: What is your Favorite Character Class and Why?
Subject: Does everyone start with a thief?

My first character (Vanadia, natch) was a thief and so I have a soft spot for the character class. I don't get much opportunity to play Van anymore (my tabletop crew is scattered across Eastern Canada)but Dapple (Continuing Where We Last Left Off) is a way to celebrate my inner klepto

As for why, I like the versatility of the class, and the option to play a character that colours outside the lines. Vanadia is a hero, though she denies it, but happens to have some funny opinions on property. Dapple is more good than evil, but wavers on a razor's edge between the two.

Once I started online, I started trying other classes and while I've done ok as a cleric (Martali and Rose Red) and even a paladin (Caterina), it's the Audalis character class of bladesinger that I am starting to love. It started with Runyacath in Meanwhile, and continues with En'Aranthea in The Guiding Light.

There, you have different elements to build into your character. As elite Sylvari warriors, you have these amazing fighters who specialize solely in the sword, and are steeped in martial tradition. They are also historians and diplomats, so there needs to be a certain amount of intelligence and charisma that most fighter players forego in exchange for strength and constitution. No sweaty, grunting man-mountains here!
