I'm assuming that I have the original security codes to the place? I won't assume that they should work...but it's a logical action to take.

Here's the funny thing...what I found was the backstory of how Willow came aboard the ship, not her background....I know I wrote it somewheres...

Anyway, I posted the backstory in the appropriate thread, enjoy!

Subject: Willow meets the Rocinante crew

There was a time when Sung and the crew were shot up pretty bad and he knew that the hospital on Ariel was your only hope of keeping everyone alive.

The doctor in charge of the ER that night was one Dr. A. Assante, and a tighter wound piece of uppity-up you'd never seen. He took one look down his fancipants nose and refused to treat you immediately; the space junk could wait until more important people had been attended to. He began to turn away, motioning to his gaggle of med students, when one of them spoke up.

Now this doctor to be was just a little thing, and while she tried to look purely doctor like with simple clothes and her hair bound in a severe bun at the nape of her neck, her prettiness shone brighter than any light in that room. A swan could flock with geese, but would still be a swan, and that's what it was like with this girl.

"Dr. Assante, " she spoke with eyes downcast and a demure manner, " the Hippocratic Oath would have us do no harm, but to stay our hand now would surely harm these people. Let a humble student as myself attend them while you deal with greater matters. "

The fancy doctor had started to bristle when one of his students disagreed with him, but somehow, that low sweet voice, and her use of both flattery and humility seemed to work.

"Very well, Takahara," he huffed," they're yours to practice on. " And he swept away, taking his entourage of students with him. The remaining student stood still looking downwards until he was out of sight, then she sprang into action. You find yourself looking into jade green eyes while gentle hands unwrapped field banadages and assessing the damage.

"Don't mind him, " the student assured you," Dr. A. Assante can be Dr. A. Right Asshole, but the equipment here is first rate. I'm not bad at this patching up business, either. I'm Willow, by the way, so no need to call me Doctor. I'm not there yet, though I'm awful close. "

She chatters on as she works, but it's a lovely, musical sing song of reassuring chatter that soothes better than the pain meds. And she is as good as her word, sewing up your crew's hurts with neat little stitches, and binding up broken limbs.

She sets you all to rights soon enough, and even takes care of a few old injuries that some of you hadn't bothered to look after. "You have a habit of getting folks mad at you," she murmured as she finished tying off one last bandage. "You may want to reconsider your approach, someday. "

In the course of things, you told her your names, but you noticed different names being recorded in the hospital log. She sent you on your way with some additional supplies that you probably shouldn't have been given, but she was called away by that nasty doctor before you could say much more.

A few months later, Willow contacted you, asking if you were still acquiring bullet holes and stab wounds as part of the negotiating process. When you agreed that it did still happen on occasion, she suggested that someone good at convincing others may be handy as crew, and someone who could patch you up when things still went bad would be handier. You agreed, and Willow, with her med school credits, skilled hands and boxes upon boxes of clothes, came to join the crew.

She seemed a little sad when she first came on board, but was awfully good at hiding it for the most part, and it seemed to fade into a more customary serene manner. The medical training you knew about immediately but the companion training came out later (and explained a lot about her persuasiveness).

Subject: That sound is my ego deflating

Willow watched the crowd’s mood deteriorate with hidden dismay, though her face remained serene with it’s gracious half smile. Standing beside the captain in her formal kimono, Willow was a vision in black and gold silk, golden bamboo and scarlet peonies on a black background, with a gold obi cinching her waist down to an impossible small span. Her hair was done up in a modern geisha style, with the butterfly pin supplemented with a spray of cherry blossoms made of rubies and mother of pearl.

As the crowd dispersed, Willow squeezed Sung’s arm, and as he leaned into her, Willow muttered lightly,” talk about bringing a girl down a notch or two, captain-san. I must be losing my touch!”

Her eyes swept the area and narrowed slightly as she spotted the woman giving them such a thorough once-over, Willow felt her kimono had turned sheer in the sunlight. This woman had presence, despite the simple clothing, but she disappeared before Willow could get much from her posture and body language. It disturbed Willow that the woman had had plenty of time to make her own observations from the crowd.

A big man approached them, and Willow turned her attention to him, bringing her smile up to full, blinding wattage. “I’m Bailey. Bailey Sackett.” He says offering his hand to shake. He introduces himself to each of you, making sure he gets your name right. He looks around and says loudly, “You must be the people with the CONTAINERS. Them CONTAINERS that belong to the mining guild, wouldn’t that be correct?”

“Good day to you, Bailey Sackett. I’m Willow Takahara and yes, we have a delivery for you. This is Captain Sung, I’ll let him introduce the crew as is proper.”

Willow played the submissive lady to the hilt, taking Bailey’s hand in her delicate grasp and ducking her head in the Japanese manner that so pleased her paternal grandfather. She noted the surprising weakness in Bailey’s grip…not the “holding back for fear of crushing the little flower” that some men affected when shaking ladies’ hands, but a genuine weakness at odds with his great size. When Willow overhears Sackett repeating everyone’s names carefully, she makes the connection: the poor man has Bowden’s Malady.

“Like as not half the planet has it…if mining is the main source of work on this dustbowl,” Willow thought to herself, and wondered what this could mean for them.

Ok, I vote Sarge is the first "princess" to lose a digit or two to frostbite...mental toughness can only take you so far, after all

I'm in the more sheltered part of Canada (heck there are points of the US farther north than Toronto) but I've been up in the Rockies, and cold is freakin' cold...no matter how much of a hardass you may be.

Talk to Vilyamar sometime...he's near Winnipeg, more affectionately known as "Winterpeg" by the rest of Canada.

I may have to rent that to watch again...though as an early fan of Asimov, I was almost angered by the movie's casual disregard of his story.

Constantine, btw, disappeared from the theaters faster than it should have. I'm a fan of the Hellblazer comics and had trouble believing Keanu Reeves as a blond, English, chain smoking John Constantine, but he was credible enough once the story premise was transplanted to an "unnamed American city". Lord knows, the camera loves our Keanu!

The movie captured the gritty spirit of the comics instead of simply trying to recreate a storyline, and I think it did well. If they come out with a sequel, I'll give it a go.

Dapple wanted to roar her exultation at taking down two more of the hated Greens: a throat tearing explosion of sound that would come barreling up from the depths of Sapphirine’s despair, but her guardian was wiser than that. A low pitched grunt of effort was all that that escaped from her clenched throat as her daggers sank deep into Imperial flesh.

She put a boot to the dead man’s back to pull the daggers out, shuddering at the sensation of scraping against bone as the blades came free. With the body before her dismissed, she looked over Kilgim quickly and satisfied herself that the sturdy cleric was fine. The montage of Maximus standing over the last living Green caught her eye (as a mouse’s movement would draw a cat’s attention), and she slid noiselessly over to get a clear line of sight to the Green.

He kneels before Maximus in subjugation and says, “Make it quick, please.” Dapple sucks in her breath and holds it, waiting for Maximus to respond with the killing blow. If he’s too soft-hearted to finish the job, Dapple will be more than happy to oblige.

...since it's unlikely i'll be many more theatres in the next six months or so

Surf's Up: meh...an ok time waster, particularly for the kids, but the deleted scenes show what potential the story had, and wasted. The producers explained that they cut back on scenes about Big Z (don't want to spoil the plot, so forgive the vagueness) as it was taking away from the hero (Cody). Frankly, the hero didn't have much of a story arc, and they wasted an opportunity to explore how the commercialization of sports have stolen the original sense of fun.

Made me appreciate again how superlative Pixar is at this...cutting edge animation, well-developed and unique characters and plots that usually work on many levels.

FWIW, Ratatouille is well worth seeing, especially after the relative disappointment of CARS. I still think CARS was cranked out as a contractual obligation to Disney, and The Incredibles remains Pixar's best so far.

Fun Fact: recently watched, over the course of several days, Surf's Up, Transformers and Constantine...and realized afterwards that Shia LeBoeuf is in all three...that young man is someone to watch as he matures as an actor!

Man oh man, oh man, but it’s freaking cold…. Charlie shivered within her so-called cold gear and tried to remember if she’d ever been this cold before. There was that winter in Karlstad, Minnesota when Momma decided Charlene had been “wayward” and locked her in the garage overnight with nothing but her underclothes and a Bible….

Charlie pushed away the trip down memory lane and concentrated on putting one foot in front of the other, telling herself that Pearson made a fine wind block with that broad back of his. It seemed like forever, but slowly, the facility made itself appear through the ice crystals forming on Charlie’s eyelashes.

Pearson made short work of the snowdrift blocking their way and the door was opened soon enough. Charlie noted the lack of reaction to the alarm, but concentrated on moving in and getting clear of the others to cover whatever sector the LT motioned to her. She paused long enough to haul off gloves and warm her hands with exhaled breath and friction before drawing her weapon, holding it two-handed and in front of her. The muzzle tracked her line of sight as she swept the room visually, waiting the command to move forward.

Back at the base and even at Whitehorse, Charlie had been casual and flippant, but all that remained of that girl was the makeup and the hardware piercing her eyebrow and ears. This Blake was alert and focused, though still shivering with the effects of cold and fatigue.

We as players have to decide whether we rest right at the beginning of the mission (when the LT gave us an hour for recon, no less) versus slogging on with fatigue-leaden limbs. We're are soldiers (yes, even goth-chickie survived boot camp) so we are used to operating tired, and the GM has warned us that we are aware of that. So, if you want to try an exceptionally difficult move, it may fail....if you want to take extra care because you're tired, that will help...make sense?

As for cold damage despite comparative constitutions (and no, I wasn't offended, no worries!), it IS a dice roll, and cold damage can sometimes defy logic. Look at recent tragedies on Everest: an experienced, well trained and conditioned guide, having made several successful ascents before, succumbed to the cold and nearly died recently, while the eco-tourists he was guiding, all first timers and most non-athletes, were all fine.

The lieutenant, understandably, has some trouble taking in Blake’s news and she simply gazes at him, her expression serious as he works his way from semi-amused disbelief to shocked near-acceptance.

It didn’t sit easy with him. "F-in' abominable snowman? Is there proof I can see?" he asked, plainly pleading with Blake to let go of the joke.

“I’m sorry, sir, I’m not hosing you. Not on something that matters to MY health and well-being,” Charlie responds, and the lieutenant, briefly, sees a flash in her eyes of the scared but defiant teenager she must have been on the day of her arrest.

“It’s no bear, either. I designed a bone identification program to help FBI field agents tell the difference between human, ursine, deer and simian remains, and this ain’t bear. Not enough of a snout and too much braincase…not human, but apelike. Maybe even some intelligence. As for proof, I wish I’d taken a snap with my PDA, but there wasn’t time…I shouldn’t have been there in the first place, and I don’t think you’re Chogan’s type.”

The lieutenant threw her a look at that, and she knew to be quiet from that point. He’d need to chew it over and they had time before they got there. Charlie spent the time on the Heli with her eyes closed, walking through the ARF’s map in her head.

The chopper set them down as per the looey’s instructions and the team gathered around him as he shared the news of Charlie’s find. If anyone looks at her, she’ll simply nod confirmation, but won’t defend her decision to not blurt it out to the team earlier.

"This don't change how we go in. We gow in hot, expecting trouble, and covering each other's asses. Got it?

"Good. Team one will sweep the southern hemisphere. Team two will take the north. Secure the buildings' main floor only, and regroup int the main facility's lobby in one hour.

"Now, unless Chief Blake has anything to add concerning what this blue igloo is; we move out."

Charlie spoke up at that point. “I have no idea what it could be, I’ve seen some early designs on force fields but nothing that’s gone past blue-sky dreaming, frankly. Could be electrical, and our boots are steel-toed and hobnailed. One of us’d better take the thermarest from our sleeping bags - it’s rubber – and slide it along the ground so we can walk on it as we pass through the barrier…that should prevent grounding if the barrier is electrical. (OOC: that’s assuming we have that in our sleeping kits, but seemed like reasonable survival gear…I can edit out if necessary)

“Boss, you want us to all go in the main entrance then split to recon? There are several emergency exits we could circle around to and not go in the main way. If the personnel tried to evacuate, those entrances may be breached and we can enter without me having to code us in at each point.”

Blake stops at that point, waiting for a response and keeping more body heat from escaping out her mouth.

“Bind him quickly,” Varuna called out and pointed at the frozen attacker, “We will want to question him.”

The healer immediately made his way to the fallen Dog and En’Aranthea, seeing there was no way to catch the fleeing attacker, sheathed her sword and made her way to the “held” captive. With a sure touch but no malice or roughness, she searched for weapons, disarming him, before binding his hands behind his back with a bit of rope. She looked at him a moment, thinking, then used a little more rope to hobble his feet, so that he could walk, albeit slowly and with a shuffling gait. Humans did this to their horses, she’d observed, and it seemed effective. They had no desire to carry a bound captive through treacherous swamp.

“You are unharmed?” she asked Valendara quietly, and at the mage’s assent, she turned her attention to the paladin and healer bending over Dog. She remained by the captive, one light hand on his shoulder, but with the immediate crisis past, she could let herself feel concern for the injured animal. “Can you save him?” she asked quietly,” I know not if your goddess holds the younger siblings in as high a regard as we Sylvari do.”

OOC: will need to wait for Varuna’s spell to wear off or be dispelled, so no point in questioning prisoner now. I’m assuming that Ena would have some training to understand this, otherwise, I can edit my post.

I can't see bladesingers being prone to running down and attacking from behind, even if it does mean that the miscreants ahead are forewarned of our presence...it would also go against the grain to leave the party unprotected.

It's a risk you take sending a beastie into battle. By the way...is your horse named "Horse" too? I guess it makes it easier to replace 'em when you get them killed in battle

As for Varuna posting quickly...that's what any good healer will do and I'd think less of you if you hadn't put the injured first...Ena will move to bind the "held" attacker, just in case I can't get a post up to say so

I love when bosses talk about work/life balance (because HR makes them do so) but then they give you multiple assignments with conflicting deadlines. The only way to accomplish them all (and they are all critical, and may mean $ in your pockets) is to forego sleep and family for a few days.

Oh, and take your vacation before year end, or you'll lose it, and don't take it over Christmas...we may need you and can't have the whole team off at the same time.

Charlie had just dismissed Hart and Inga both from her mind to read the personnel files when Kane sidled up to her bunk and asked to speak with Hart. Charlie blinked in surprise but again found herself drawn back to the information in front of her. She¡¦d just been about to bring the laptop over to the lieutenant when Kane re-entered the barracks and strode over to the Lt.

"SIR!! As senior NCO of this unit I must apologize for Cpl Hart's disgraceful attitude towards you as an Officer of the United States Military and I promise it will not happen again."

Blake just watched with astonishment as the big man then saluted her.

"Ma'am I wish to apologize once again for the demeanor of both Cpl Hart and myself, neither he nor I will disrespect you again. With your leave Ma'am."

"As you were, Sargeant," she drawled back at him, a touch of the Midwest invading her speech. "If that was "disrespect" to you, you've never been to the bars I frequent! I guess that's not surprising, you'd kinda stick out like a sore thumb. Anyway, you do what you gotta do to protect the honour of the Rangers, Sarge, but I'm a big girl and can take care of myself. I'll straighten out anyone who crosses one on my lines, um-kay? So, uh, dismissed!"

Once the Sarge moved away, presumably to heap some fresh hell on the hapless Hart, Blake brought her laptop over to the lieutenant. "The dossiers on Hart and Pearson, sir. Oh, and I took the liberty of converting the blueprints for the ARF into a three-dimensional walkthrough. Just click on an entry point on the map and use the arrows to move through the complex. Just close the laptop when you're done, I'll secure it before we hop. I'm guessing you and the Sarge'll want to make some plans about how to head in? I'll let you take it all in, then. Permission to check out the "objects" from the ARF?"

(Assuming permission is granted, otherwise the DM's post never happened, hehe)

Once she was out of the barracks, Blake skipped along behind Chogan, relieved to be away from Kane for a while. Lordy, but the man was wound tight! It was a seven day's wonder the fellow hadn't had a coronary by now. She amused herself on the rest of the walk by calculating how much sass she'd have to lay on in order to provoke a pulmonary infarction in a relatively young, healthy man like the Sarge.

When the pair arrive at the hanger, the private holds a finger up to his lips to motion the need for quiet, and gestures for Charlie to stay put. The tech listens as Chogan talkes the guard into a smoke outside and mentally promises the private a firm hug as a reward.

The hanger is quiet and dark. Using her light, Blake quickly starts moving through the numerous dusty shelves, until she arrives at a nondescript alcove with a small sign that reads 'ARF36'. Dominating the small space, a large metallic freezer sits, humming softly. Scraping away the dust and frost on the freezer's glass portal, Charlie stares amazed at the contents within: the frozen corpse of a monster.

The creature measures almost seven feet in height, and is covered with long, thick, shaggy white hair. It bears many simian features, but it is clearly more than a simple white ape.

Suddenly, Charlie can hear the creak of the outer door, and knows her time is up. Heart pumping, the chief makes her way to safety moments before the guard returns.

She waits in her hidey spot until Chogan returns and she grimaces at the smell of hoarfrost and cigarette smoke, but grabs the private by both arms and pulls him into a hug before he can react. "Thanks, sweetie, I owe you big time! That's some weird hoodoo back there, you're aces for letting me talk you into bringing me here."

With the ease of practice, Charlie freed herself just as the surprised private began to tighten his grip on her. With a cheery wave, she headed back to the barracks to report in.

(OOC: Once back at the barracks, she'll wait for the Lt. to notice her, then report what she saw in a low voice. She'll let it be his decision whether to tell the others. Will post more on the weekend once the LT posts! )

When the Sla'kar granted them passage and let them know of the other humans in the area, En'Aranthea nodded her thanks, but let Varuna take the lead in further discussions. She might have envied his facility for picking up phrases in other languages, but her teacher had told her that Kith-Jora had many gifts to share, and no-one received them all.

The Sla'kar surprised her with the gift to Varuna, and when the reptilian warrior made to leave, En'Aranthea gave her a full bladesinger salute, sword whistling through the air as she pointed it's tip at the sky then the four origins of the winds, before the blade came to rest in front of her face. Bowing gracefully, En'Aranthea thanked the sla'kar for the gifts of passage and information.

***

When the two men stepped out from behind the tree, En'Aranthea cursed herself for letting her guard down, just that much. She reacted quickly, however, drawing her sword and calling forth the song of the bladesingers and interposing herself between the men and her party. Though she'd not yet mastered the skill to knock a missile from the air with her sword, she knew the Steps to dance in the attempt, and it was in the nature of any bladesinger to be the shield of the party.

Her priority was the lesser armoured ones: Valendara and Varuna, as Tal should be able to defend himself. She saw the bolt nick her cousin, with some small injury, but the battletrance kept her shielded from distracting emotion.

The men did not stay to fight, however, turning and running as soon as the crossbow bolts were loosed. En'Aranthea made no move to follow either of them, knowing to do so would split the party and risk running into an ambush.

"Tal!" She called, incorporating the words into the notes rising from her throat and blade," can your dog bring one of them to bay without killing him? "

OOC: Can't assume Varuna's prayer was answered and that he's called out, so we'll wait and see what the DM rolls for initiative )

I did have Dapple refer to Maximus as a "man-mountain" and his name IS Maximus....but I'm not sure I recall you having plate armour...Alacrity would have required a really good explanation on how a runaway gladiator (you are an escapee, right? or am I getting you confused with someone else?)could afford plate mail.

Any way, Dapple is shadowy, holding herself apart from the others, so perfect. She may LOOK like she's about to stab Arien in the back, but it would be more like her to give him a swift kick in the rear. . I wouldn't go so far as to say she likes Arien, but maybe hates him a little less than the rest of the world
