Subject: By the fire's glow

The mood around the fire was quiet, and Dapple didn’t mind that much. Between fitful sleep the night before, the battle and the healing afterwards, the little rogue was tired. Apart from giving her daggers, gloves and boots a thorough cleaning, Dapple waited patiently by the fire to see what fare would be offered.

The Red, Adrian felt otherwise, and proceeded to feed himself a colorless ( and to Dapple’s sensitive nose, odorless) paste. The food was even unappealing to the little chipmunk (a companion, perhaps) that traveled with him, though the name made a grin flicker briefly on Dapple’s tired face.

“Killer, heh. Don’t worry, little fella, I know small things can be deadly, too.” Dapple’s comment to the chippie was interrupted by Sunset’s arrival, sausage craving and all. Dapple’s stomach growled painfully, and even Adrian’s gruel started to look good. Before she could distract the dragonet, Sunset spotted the chipmunk, and Dapple was abruptly reminded that this was no domesticated pet. The miniature drake ruffled her frill to full size, and hissed menacingly as she bobbed her head back and forth hypnotically. Unfortunately, Killer was no pushover, and he chattered back in full chipmunk battle mode, the squeaks and whistles reaching into the upper register of Dapple’s hearing. Cowed, Sunset abruptly ducked her head and darted into the darkness of Dapple’s cloak, where the rogue could feel the lithe little body shaking with anger and fear.

Striding across the room, Char dropped the birds near Dapple’s feet and in one, smooth motion, dropped into a cross-legged position beside her. While Char set his bow down next to himself and began plucking the fowl, Dapple eyed the dead things dubiously. She was city bred, and not used to seeing her meal presented to her so recently alive. If she didn’t need meat so much to keep oversized muscles on slender bones, the sight would have turned her off dinner

“Wot ‘appened wit’ ‘er?” Char asked, jerking his head towards Sunset’s lumpy form beneath the cloak. He continued to pluck at the birds, but from underneath his low brow those icy blue eyes of his darted between the two mages.

Char, you’re a soft touch beneath all that hair and growling, she thought to herself, briefly amused. First me, then Sunset. Like to look after wounded creatures, do you? She was warmed briefly by the thought before a chill hand gripped her soul once more. I think not, little monster. You’re damaged goods, worthless! Forget that at your peril!

Dapple shivered, and remembered that Char still waited a response. She shook her head, looking down to where Sunset hid, avoiding the clear gaze of the hunter beside her. “No, nothing really,” she said flatly, her voice barely rising above the hiss of the fire. “A spat between Sunset and a chipmunk over who was dinner and who was not. Sunset lost the argument.”

She reached a hand down her side to where the dragon huddled, offering a gentle touch as reassurance. Sunset chose to nibble on the finger, mauling it with mock ferocity. Dapple winced once when sharp needle teeth sank too deeply, and gradually urged the dragonet back into the open with waggling fingers to attack and wrestle.

I know I said I didn't think I'd have the time, I know I said I couldn't handle more than one game with my travelling, but hellfires, Cap'n, the crew needs me and you know it.

Call me a talker and a medic, if you will...a smooth talking bit o' sweetness as dropped outta Companion training to learn more about the insides of folks. So maybe I'm not good at finishing what I start, Cap'n, but I'd take it as a kindness if you took me on.

Cue the guitar solo....

Alacrity kept wondering what the heck you were complaining about ("he's in the game, what's his problem)until I pointed out that you are not listed on the first post of Q&A. Al figures as long as someone is listed in the first page of the actual game, you're in...

Hopefully, he'll make the Q&A and the game consistent. Hopefully, it will be by listing you on both pages, rather than taking you off the game page (joke!!!)

Anyway, Dapple had posted up to the point of reaching camp, so I should probably post something this eve. Al says he will move things along tomorrow.

It may be just because we are beginning, but we don't appear to be interacting with each other much. My character, unfortunately, is not the cuddliest and friendliest of people, but is everyone playing a silent loner type? May make for a pretty quiet campaign, lol.

I have a lot of travelling on my plate between now and the 15th, but if someone wants to work out a convo (or attempted convo, hehe) with Dapple and their character, we can do so by PM and then post the results. I can't install IM on my work laptop (darn big international corporation and their rules!) but I can usually hit the website in the evenings for PM's.

Dapple's an efficient little thing, and I had said that I would do so as I made my rounds. I obviously would have stayed my hand for the interrogation, but after? Shrugs...Dapple is not bloodthirsty so much as she hates loose ends.

Tann said he would work it into his post...if he doesn't, I'll assume I dealt the coup de grace...wouldn't keep Dapple up at night

Subject: Aftermath and looking ahead

The first bug revealed little of interest to Dapple’s search, but she hadn’t really expected much. No sign yet that they had been sent by a force other than their own urges, but that meant nothing. She muttered a reminder to herself that she felt nothing (her leg protesting otherwise), pocketed the odd trinkets and moved to the next downed creature.

She noted Char’s approach but didn’t let that distract her. At the tap on her shoulder, though, she flinched away, a reflexive action like a horse shuddering to dislodge a fly. She looked up sharply at his whispered words, and a flash of … (surprise? Concern? Fear?) flickered over her face before her expression closed shut again.

“Save it, Char, it will be needed later,” she rasped back quietly, rising from her crouch and moving a few steps to the side. “But, “she continued, looking away as if the words cost her,”thanks.”

Kilgim’s offer fared no better, with a simple shake of the head and the statement that the fighters needed their strength more than she did. “Rest is all I need, perhaps the gods will bless us with some tonight,” she lied evenly.

She used the distraction of the mage interrogation to slip one of her own potions out and take a few sparing sips, enough to ease the stinging ache from sundered flesh. I am nothing, I feel nothing, I am nothing, I feel nothing…. Words and potion washed away the tension, and she blinked quickly to fight the natural sleepy reaction to healing.

She watched with detachment as the party fussed over seeing the boys safely off to Freegate. She considered how to get word to Fast Toes to watch over the lads, but then concluded that there was little point: her influence in the underworld of Freegate was still too slight.

Getting soft, little monster? Let your guard down and they’ll betray you, like everyone else… you made your own way in a meaner world than they face, and no-one stretched a hand to help you. Let them find their strength, or fail on their own !

Tasting ashes on her tongue, Dapple slipped away to retrieve her horse, finding Char’s easily enough on the way.

***

The ride to the waymeet passes quickly enough, with Dapple wrapped in her cloak and keeping her own counsel. She stables her horse with quick efficient movements, taking care of its needs without treating the beast like a pet. When discussion of the evening’s plans are raised, she states quietly that she will gather firewood, having no skill at hunting (and fully expecting Char would volunteer anyway).

Subject: An end to it

The style of fighting that Dapple used was of the uglier sort: a brutal, bruising, bar brawling battery of punches and kicks that left your opponent too battered for opposition. Practiced by someone as fast and flexible as the rogue, however, it had its moments of acrobatic elegance. With a swift run towards the mantis to build momentum, Dapple launched herself, feet first, and spread her arms wide as soon as her heels connected with the bug’s chest. As the thorax caved inwards with a sickening crunch, Dapple shifted her balance, arms windmilling, fighting to remain atop the creature even as it fell. The body came to rest with a crash and the lithe rogue hopped down lightly, as if alighting from a carriage.

Knees sagged slightly with pain and weakness before she stubbornly locked them straight, and she swirled her cloak back around her form before the blood on her clothes was visible as dark shiny patches on the somber black and grey. Her face shiny with sweat and mantis blood, she looked around at the carnage and noted that while some looked badly off, all of her travelling companions were still standing.

“Well, that was fun, wasn’t it?” she asked of no-one in particular, and crouched (slowly so that blood loss and exertion wouldn’t make her dizzy) beside the body beside her. Swift hands checked for belt pouches and other items of interest, as she looked over to the next mantis body.

OOC: Dapple will check all the mantis for anything shiny and spendable (hehehe). If the mantis mage is still unconscious when she reaches it, she’ll finish it off.

Pardon the fast post, but I'll be out of town Monday and Tuesday, with Thursday likely to be my next chance to post.

Subject: Who's next?

Once Dapple was fighting, inner demons quieted and she was lost to the rhythm of attack, defend, react. Iron will had forged a fighting figure out of her hated body, and so flesh and bone moved with a unity that heart and mind could not find.

Spin, kick, land, spin again, until the mantis before her fell, it’s head hanging at an unnatural angle from it’s thorax. So, it does have a neck to break…good to know. On to another, little monster. Cold grey eyes swept the battlefield and she noted Adrian facing another mantis with a sword drawn. She watched Adrian and the bug with the detached interest of someone, well, watching bugs, actually. When Adrian lost his sword, Dapple continued her survey of the fighting, assuming that Adrian would simply do something mage-y and blast the bug before him.

A new Thri-Kreen leaped into Dapple’s line of vision and she danced on the balls of her feet, dodging several sweeps before one blade opens a burning line along her shoulder. She clapped a hand against the wound, and the thing leapt away before she could repay the favour.

Need to find a way to stop the damned bouncing around, she thought to herself, scanning for another target. Adrenaline is coursing so hard that her injuries matter little, as long as they don’t affect how she moves. As another mantis leaps at Char, lashes hard at the ranger and leaps away again, Dapple remembers a trick she’d used before.

Sheathing her daggers, she undoes the ties holding her cloak at her neck and gathers the inky folds into her arms. Impromptu net at the ready, she looks for another mantis, preferably one engaged in trying to kill someone other than her.

OOC: Finding a new dance partner, and will try to throw cloak over it and hold onto an edge, hampering it’s ability to jump away again. Should that work, will set to work on it with boots and fists.

I would just ask that if something significant happens during the enemy attacks, the DM does interupt to ask for any changes. Significant would include serious injuries amongst the team, addition of new enemies, or a change in their attacks.

Just an FYI to all...my November, December and January look hellish from a work/life balance (as in there isn't any), other than right around Christmas and New Years, so Al may need to NPC Dapple at times.

Dapple had struck as she had planned, but the dagger in her left hand skittered on the edge of the carapace before sinking home. Without thinking, her reflexes adjusted the angle of the dagger in her right fist, and it, too drank deeply. The alien body bucked against her in reaction, and she pulled her knives free just in the nick of time as the bug jumped up and away from her.

Wee Jas toes! This thing is fast! Dapple thought as the thing whipped it’s arms forward. She danced around two wedges, but hissed in pain as the third sliced into her leg. Dapple shook her injured leg, fighting both fiery pain and numbness, and was reassured by the strength she still felt. She adjusted her grip on her weapons so that the blades lay flat along her inner forearms, then launched herself in a jump of her own.

Arms tight against her body, she spun with great speed, lashing out with her left foot. Her soft leather boots were of Imperial make, stitched with precision, tailored for the Green’s fighting style and juiced just enough to make a kick that much more deadly. Dapple’s heel was aimed for the bug’s head, just behind the spot a man’s ear would be, and the fighter thief waited for the cracking sound of a successful strike.

As Alacrity said, veggies and humus, pretzels, popcorn, fresh fruit, that sort of thing

Black light? Nope. Always wanted to try by candlelight, but too dark.

Virgins? Well, again, my daughter and goddaughter qualify, but I have a really hot husband who apparently overlooked mentioning my cuteness

Computer geek? Despite working in technology for now half my career, I'm not a developer, or system engineer, etc. I am an enthusiatic computer user, though...so a geek wannabe???

Time had an elasticity to it that never ceased to amaze Dapple: at one instance, time dragged, with everyone chatting away with the boys (Jal chattering equally away with nobody), and Dapple waiting for the opportunity to remind them all of their obligations to Dwan, then the next instant, time galloped away like a horse swarmed by hornets. People and horses starting getting jumpy, and more than one person mentioned bugs. Char whistled for his horse, and Dapple was prepared to be impressed only if the dratted beast brought her mount along, too. Yes, by all means, she thought to herself, send the greenhorn back through the woods alone to find her horse¡K

Before she could much more than turn away, the ground erupted with monsters out of the wildest nightmare. Dapple froze with atavistic fear, and that may have been the greatest piece of luck she'd ever had. While she stood immobile, all the newcomers focused on the assembled party in the center of the clearing. As Arien cried out and brandished his sword, Dapple realized she was behind two of the smaller walking bugs, and they had their backs to her. At the moment, she was completely unnoticed.

Good, child. Now edge back into the cover of the forest, slowly, then turn and run away. The others will keep them busy enough, they will never miss you. This is none of your business!

Dapple crouched slightly, centering her weight over her knees, and drew a dagger slowly from its sheath, dragging a finger along the blade's runnel to silence it. She studied the backs of the creatures before her, noting the upright, bipedal-like stance. All right, she thought to herself, no point in assuming it has heart and lungs in its chest, but any creature that has a head must find it vital.

Decision made, she silently glided toward the nearest mantis, dagger raised for a backstab. Her target was the join between head and thorax, where the carapace and skull met.

OOC: Because I will not assume a successful attack (nor a killing blow), Dapple will be prepared to switch to attacks with hands and feet (mostly feet). Gotta keep all those arms outta reach.

When Arien called for Char and Dapple to reveal themselves, Dapple shook her head in disgust, but complied. Arien lacked subtlety, whereas Dapple avoided being noticeable on principle. She made sure to be plainly visible (and as menacing as a smallish boy could look) beside Char when the “desperate criminals” tried to break and run, then waited for their attention to turn elsewhere. As soon as the boys were fixated on Arien’s shiny self, Dapple slipped sideways to stand in the shade offered by an enormous tree branch. Part of the art of “disappearing”, Fast Toes had taught her, is to not be where people remember you to be. Then, do nothing to draw attention to your new location. People are lazy: once you are out of sight, you are out of mind.

Still, Dapple mused from her new vantage point, that invisibility spell is sure handy. The rogue watched the Red, the Mad One and the Big One re-materialize with envy. The one experience she’d had with such magic had been the best time of her life, her ugly self invisible to even her own eyes!

Pay attention! Must you always need protection from your own vapidness?

Dapple repressed the start and focused on the centre of the clearing. Adrian had handed the boys their weapons, and Kilgim was doing his level best to laugh and be kindly at the same time. The little thief sharpened her attention on the boys. The smallest appeared to be the age that Dapple professed to be, and she wouldn’t waste the opportunity to observe mannerisms and behaviour.

As the lads described the fate of their father, Dapple felt her stomach try to twist and fall at the same time. Giant bugs? What the hell was that? And, more importantly, how were they going to get out of doing anything about it and get on with the paying job?

That’s better… purred the dead voice, and the band around her stomach eased, just a little.

Subject: A fish out of water, or Dapple in the woods

OOC: When skulking in the woods, Dapple will follow Char's lead, but I am afk all day Tuesday, and wanted to get this posted. If Char's actions would contradict this, I'll happily revise

Well, they had a plan. Whether or not it was a good plan, or a wise one – it was a plan, and it would have to go seriously wrong for there to be much danger in it. Such were Dapple’s thoughts as her horse followed Char’s off the road and down some deer path only the ranger could have found.

As she clung close to the horse’s neck (no-one here to see her skill on horseback with Char’s attention ahead), she wondered at herself. Here was the loner, the observer, taking part in a plan she didn’t even agree with, when she still refused to participate in Fast Toes’ grander schemes.

You lack focus, that’s your problem. Learned all these skills, at no small cost, and yet you hang back. You could be Fast Toes’ second in a year or less, if you’d just get on with it!

Dapple was spared any further tirades by Char’s signal. She dismounted as quietly as she could, then followed Char into the brush. This was different than moving unseen through crowds, or worming her way through fences and shuttered windows, but she watched the woodsman’s progress closely, and tried to step in his footsteps. Too close, once: a supple branch whipped back, and only her reflexes saved her eyes from the lash.

Once they got close to the hidden highwaymen, however, Dapple realized she could have brought her horse, or even great clattering Arien, for all the difference it would have made. As she drew close enough for her cursed eyes to pick up their features, the crime family argued amongst themselves.

This is the great threat? The four men with swords? Bunch of lackwits who shouldn’t be handling sharp objects, she thought to herself, and felt something cold uncoil from within her. These fools will starve before they manage to rob anyone. Bringing them down would be a mercy killing. Go on, you could get two of them with daggers before they even know you are there…

Dapple had started to wriggle forward, one dagger half drawn, when the village idiots realized the youngest was missing. They rushed out to the road, where Arien and Kilgim watched, wide eyed, and Dapple cursed under her breath, blinking and shaking her head. Sliding the dagger back home, she crouched once more, glancing to Char. The tilt of her head asked the silent question: stay hidden, or the follow the dolts out into the open?

When Dapple made her comment about Char, the shaggy headed ranger gave her a look that said “Shaddup” just as clearly as if he’d said it aloud, but there was humour in the way he lifted one eyebrow at her. For all of her nasty words and mean ways, Char never seemed to take it to heart. In fact, for all the times she got in his face, he got right back into hers. She didn’t know whether to deck the man, or …

Run the hell away, if you had any sense snarled the dead voice within her soul, making the smile vanish from her face before it was born. That man sees too much, and one day he’ll see you for the half-breed monster that you are. Your own mother feared you; are you prepared for the day when these people turn away from you in disgust?

Dapple hung her head, letting hood and curls hide her while she bit bloodless lips, fighting the repressed anger that shook her frame. She listened to the debate around her, muttering her mantra of nothingness, and finally raised her head to look at the party again.

“Oh, how I wish I had met such good company earlier,” she warbled in a boy’s falsetto, clutching her hood at the neckline and tilting her head, eyes wide in an imitation of a stage waif. “Had only someone cared enough to steer this orphan of Freegate back on the straight and narrow, how different my life would have been now!”

She dropped her hands and dropped the act, continuing in her usual dark voice,” I’ve no taste for needless slaughter, so I’ll go with Char in our own ambush. But make no mistake, “ she raised one hand in warning,” if any of these ‘poor wretches’ so much as twitches in my direction, I’ll put the bugger down and not lose an hour’s sleep over it. Before you all rush to feel sorry for anyone, consider the fate of any farmers or pilgrims that may have come along instead of us.”

Realizing she had spoken more than she normally did, she stopped, and shrugged with her usual “Nothing to me” way. “So,” she said to Char, not looking at him,” are they far enough to ride awhile, or do we proceed on foot?”

As the group headed out, Arien declared the party order and headed out, Char heading out well in advance to scout. Dapple considered for a moment the implications of being put in between the two spellcasters, as if she was some weakling to be protected, then shrugged, deciding that the argument wasn’t worth winning. Misplaced and unwanted chivalry, or a discreet desire on Arien’s part to have the two most unknown entities under her always suspicious eye, it really mattered little.

Content that Char would spot danger long before it would become apparent to Dapple’s city rat senses, she let herself fall into a light doze; one that registered the horse beneath her but little else. The deliberate steps of the horses and the swaying motion of the saddle were soothing, and Dapple might even have regained some of the sleep lost over the last few nights, were it not for the drone of conversation behind her. Rousing from within her hood, she concentrated on the voices behind her, but they were too far back for her to catch much more than a phrase or two. Curiosity and indifference warred within her, and with the heat accumulating within her tight wrapped cloak and hood, indifference won.

She was awake now, though, and irritated at the disturbance. She looked around, noting with distaste that they had left the city far behind. Dapple liked cities, their rigid, ordered shapes, their mazes of dark alleys, the near constant noise and bustle. She knew their dangers and their opportunities, and could calculate the risks with any action. She knew what waited in the shadows, for it was her. Out here, in the wild, was another matter, and Dapple eyed the hidden areas under trees and the horizon of cliffs with unease. The sounds of the woods were a language she couldn’t understand, and the threats that lurked were nameless. “Someone ought to cobble this whole place over” she muttered to herself, “Make something of it.”

That was when Arien voiced his concern, asking if anyone could determine a reason for his horse being uneasy. Dapple was tempted to make a witty remark about why horses would need a reason to be contrary when Jal spoke up. “I believe, Sir Thedell,” the mage called, “that your horse senses the ambush that awaits us.” He pointed up the road with his staff; “Four men, armed with swords. Other than that, I’m afraid, I can tell you very little…”

Dapple turned back to eye him, narrowing her eyes at the news. Convenient that he should have that information handy when he doesn’t appear to have cast a spell. I heard rambling, no chanting. whispered the dead voice inside her, and she had to agree. But, she thought to herself, if he had set up the ambush, why warn us?

Setting such pointless thoughts aside, she readied her daggers and shifted her weight in the saddle. If a fight was coming, she wanted to be clear of the beast, and on her feet. Before she could do much more than that, however, Char galloped back like a madman.

OOC: Not going to repeat Char’s post…

“Someone has to teach that man Common,” she said drily, shaking her head, but speaking just loud enough to be heard. “ I could have sworn that you said that there are bandits waiting in ambush, and we should help them because they are basically honest folk? That’s some fine tracking, to see into a man’s soul like that.”

The last of the night’s coolness caressed Dapple’s cheek as she hurried through the streets towards the West Gate. While in her favourite back alleys, Dapple moved with a swift directness that few ever witnessed, but as she neared the wide, open streets of the better part of town, she slowed, drawing her hood up against the new day. She slipped from one fading shadow to another, until she was able to mingle amongst the horses and handlers awaiting the party.

She gripped Dwan’s arm as briefly as possible, letting go and pulling her arm back as if stung. Another cold, tight-lipped smile for Terrin, and she swung into the saddle of the horse loaned to her. A creature of rooftops and blind alleys, Dapple didn’t make a habit of riding horses, and had no need to own one, but liked walking long distances less than she did horses. If anyone noted that she sat well in the saddle for a city bred commoner, she would just stare at them blankly. That life is behind us now

She watched the others as they took their places, and noted who was comfortable on horseback, and who rode like a sack of potatoes. She nodded in an almost friendly manner to Kilgim, wincing at the way he sat with his weight against the back edge of the saddle. “You’ll be sore tonight, good dwarf,“ she thought to herself, but spared the cleric her thoughts. Instead, she checked the small pack hanging at the small of her back, and the daggers sheathed on arms and legs, making sure none had shifted to hamper her movements.

Sunset’s antics stole a snicker from Dapple, which she swallowed unsuccessfully as she shook her head at Arien’s mock heroic pose. “Don’t the two of you make a sight,” she drawled in her low voice, making Arien grin all the wider.

As the group headed out, some took up positions as if agreed upon in advance, while others, Dapple included, remained loosely grouped in the middle. Char would range ahead, that only made sense, and Dapple noted with distant approval that the two big fighters placed themselves at the head and rear of the group. The spooky mad one also dropped back to ride near Talas, and Dapple didn’t know whether to be relieved that he wasn’t near her, or concerned that he was behind her. She nudged her horse forward a bit, then off to the side, so she could easy look to party members both ahead and behind.
