Frodrick's perhaps seen a few out on the hills in passing before. They are typically small, carnivorous, and preferring to avoid confrontation. They usually avoid settlements, but hunger can drive them to strike outlying farms.

Of course the kind Frodrick is used to seeing occasionally when he heads out are only just over two feet tall, and barely four feet long plus tail. This one almost stands as tall as he does at the shoulder.

Kyrie, meanwhile, may have heard a number of things about the vicious little monsters who wait until a farmer is asleep before slaughtering some of their livestock and who kidnap naughty children and gobble them up whole with their huge mouths (usually accompanied by a demonstration of just how wide these mouths are).

This screen must be even wider than I had feared. For me the Latest Updated are so far to the right of the tabs that they fall more or less directly under Support RDI.

If I needed to check a PM, though, I might be threatened by the placement of the Audalis tab... if I got PMs and if I checked them and if the tab were wide enough to accidentally hit instead of the really short Articles tab.

This does answer a separate question for me, though. I was wondering why most of my posts look much leaner than I expect them to be when finished... this monitor has been turning probably 4-5 line paragraphs into 2-3 line little snippets.

The party finished with their mappind and decided to turn back for Oleg's to check their earnings and regroup. A couple times more over the next day they found small battle sites like the first, with the largest sites to the south. Differing numbers of grubby blue mite and sooty kobold dead on either side of each conflict, though if anyone was keeping track, the losses tended to be heavier if only by one body on the kobold side.

Travel
26-29 Gozran

Travel back to Oleg's was steady and largely as dull as the trip had been thus far. Next to nothing disturbed their adventures save for the continued heat wave bringing unseasonably warm weather, bordering on balmy summer temperatures for most the ride back.

They marched until the hills returned to the gentler grasslands to the north. The party was a few miles from Oleg's post, the border fort's rooftops visible on the horizon, when the lethargy broke.

A group of about five or six men and woman had surrounded something on the plain. They carried pitchforks and lit torches, with some kind of wild animal trapped unseen between their jostling legs. They were playing it careful and every time the creature snapped at one side they backed off.

The stand off broke away in a sudden burst of energy as the creature, a canine animal resembling a large dog or wolf with a long, prehensile tail, jumped surprisingly high onto one of it's captors and leapt over him. The animal broke into a loping run for the cover of the forest—and the returning Greenbelt Party—with the farmers in close pursuit.

Standing four foot tall at the shoulder with eight feet of body length, from nose to the tip of its long, thin tail, the thylacine, boogeyman of farming communities wherever they lived, ran toward the party. Though easy to mistake for a wolf at a distance, its the thylacine's body was too catlike and it's tawny fur cross with black stripes down it's back from up close and even closer as it approached.

At a distance of about a dozen yards (let's call that 35' or 7 spaces) it froze, trying to determine which way to dart around the party to its salvation.

“Quick!”

“Kill the beast!”

The pursuing farmers called for its death. It was clear both parties had been at this cat and mouse for a while and stamina was beginning to run down for both sides.

Subject: Voyageurs

Hopefully more than one of them knew how to hunt, however XD though I concede the horses probably don't need a full day's feed every day if we take it slow enough to go hunting and take the time to munch a bit. For the record, if we were going to go out without the wagon one day, our travel time would be nearly halved.

Also since this is Pathfinder, approximately 90% of the natives are automatically hostile as opposed to helpful unless provoked and entirely willing to trade supplies. Also there was no chance of them running face-long into a pack of trolls if any of them went hunting alone for a day, though I'm pretty sure bears and unhappy locals took a good number down.

You're right, though, about the details of enacting the exploration and settling of the new country--I certainly hope more than 5 settlers survive the first winter, but then we're only a hope skip and a jump away from our own country, from which we can order supplies if we so desire.
But realistically I don't actually know that much of Canadian History. That teaching was from an era before I discovered that words meant things when you put them in order and sometimes those things are supposed to be listened to.

Meanwhile I'm pretty sure I've not actually given folk much to respond to, so after I finished the vacuuming I'll be moving on this recent post. The tree may be useful if anyone can climb (hint, if I recall correctly, Miguel could actually get into Oleg's post over the wall just by Taking 10) to have a good vantage of the entire hex, but other than that there's no point in really pretending anyone's interested in the tree until we can stop pretending we don't know what it's full of.

EDIT: I know there was something I was going to edit in, but I can't remember what, but instead I'll note that Oleg chose his border fort because there are no rivers nearby, so the traffic in and out would never get too heavy (which was another one of the reasons he was not pleased to find himself on the edge of a soon-to-be-colonized country chewing up his wilderness).

Exploration & Mapping
23-24 Gozran
Hexes: E6

Frodrick stashed the glittering rock in his pack and the group made camp at the top of the hill. The sky was perfectly clear that night, revealing a huge heavenly vault of the spring constellations. Kyrie realized with perhaps a small pang that back home Planting Week had already come and gone almost two weeks ago. It was amazing how quickly an epic adventure could drag one away from normal life. Her parents would be finished with most of the spring planting already.

The clear weather lasted into the next day as the sky offered no veil from the beating sun. While it was never truly hot, the temperature rose unseasonably. Trees were few and far between on the open hills, and those that could provide shelter were often hardly covered in fresh spring buds.

There was one tree that was the exception, however. Visible from several miles away a massive sycamore tree rose out of the landscape, clearly the same tree as the landmark displayed on the map. This huge grey tree showed no signs of spring renewal as the party mapped out the area around it.

(24 Gozran)
As the Greenbelt Party drew steadily closer to the tree in their exploration and mapping, Krii looked up from his second straight day of frustration trying to identify the function of the last spell in the book. He slid the tome back into one of his saddlebags for the third time that day when a sudden memory stuck him.

While playing cards back at Oleg's post, he had heard one of the trappers speaking of a nest of some small, violent kind of creature or another living in the hills around a large tree. While this was certainly not the only tree in the hills that could be described as 'large', it was by far the best qualifier for that tag. According to the rumour, the creatures were no where near the scale of threat that the bandit presence was, but they were still annoying, so Krii figured he had best keep an eye open for anything.

Naturally, it was not long before anything happened. Krii's memory helped him place the word that had been used to describe the creatures when he saw the corpses—mites. At the time he had been imagining some form of large vermin, but seeing the blue bodies and grotesque, bulbous heads, he realized his error. Though he didn't know anything about them, he had heard them spoken of by the gnomes on occasion.

The black scaly bodies on the other side of the small skirmish—also stripped down of whatever gear the looters deemed worth taking—were more easily recognisable to anyone who knew the stories of the common 'wild' races; small reptilian creatures called kobolds.

The dead were five in total, three of the black-scaled kobolds and two of the blue-skinned mites. Any other combatants must have looted the bodies and fled for their respective holes to prepare for revenge for their fallen.

That night while on watch Krii could have sworn he'd spotted several pint-sized figures scrabbling through the tall grass two hilltops over in the dim moonlight. Besides that isolated incident, however, yet another uneventful night came and passed.

(In the meantime, yet another birthday has come and gone. Happy celebrations one and all birthday boys on yet another year of life and adventuring and not yet being dead!)

(I'm currently assuming Krii has told the party at some point across the day of his suspicions about the area and isn't actually keeping it entirely to himself until we accidentally run pelvis-first into a warband or something. That said, I left the details of when he felt this information might be pertinent to the party's interest mostly up to him.)

(Oh, and you have one more day left of travel before this hex is explored, I just wanted to give you a chance to see if you have any reactions to this nonsense before finishing exploring and moving on)

Subject: Oh yeah, question I forgot to answer at the time

From what little I've read of it, it's basically one of the most common horse-related mistakes in fantasy (right behind horse-equals-motorcycle). It's like eating an apple, going on an 8-hour hike, then eating another apple to finish the day.

A horse under light labour (I don't know how much labour 8-hours riding and/or pulling wagon counts as) needs at least 1.5-2 lbs of hay per 100lb of horse (which run ~1000-1200lbs) and .5-1 lb of grainfeed (can be as simple as a mixture of oats and whatnot). They can sustain themselves on grazing, but it's looking at about 15-20 lbs of it stopping at frequent intervals throughout the day, but also giving them actual feed is better off.

For simplicity's sake horse feed/day is 0.05G and 10lbs. For even simpler simplicity's sake we're already ignoring the necessity of food except to pretend that we have enough for a journey lasting just over 2 weeks at a time.

Out of curiosity I tried to look up how much water a horse takes, and I only came up with a vague probably twice as much (unless you've seen that more specifically elsewhere).

Trail Rations x5 x14 = 70lbs
Horse Feed x4 x14 = 560lbs
Water x5 x14 = 280lbs
Water x4 x2 x14 = 448lbs
1358lbs of sustenance to take with us (not counting when the horses can just get water from the rivers but otherwise skeptical about that horse water req.)

That said I am so glad we're not keeping track of this stuff. Things like this are so much nicer when they happen automatically behind the scenes and don't just become another thing no one remembers to keep track of until everyone should be half-dead of starvation and thirst XD

Well, Frodrick is a pretty silly dwarf, but besides that it's quite a possibility if Frodrick could scavenge enough food for the whole party that we could stay out plenty longer (well, except for the horse's nutrition, come to think of it), thought doing so would also slow us down even more than we already are.

Also, the half-exploration wasn't my main point. It was that the bridges allow for normal time, contrary to the suspicion posted, namely with regards to D4. For C3 you were entirely correct (obviously) XD

Topic: Kingmaker Q&A
Subject: More or less

It's funny, I was looking at a section about character creation earlier and I noticed to my amusement

"For instance, if you're playing the aforementioned dwarven fighter, perhaps one of the following holds:

You have taken a vow against drinking, can't hold your liquor, or act in a peculiar, eccentric way when drunk."

(the other five suggestions that were there didn't quite apply to you, since you do wield and axe, have a beard, are not a pacifist, and do hate goblins, though the 'lives in a forest' one came awfully close)

Anyway I thought I should point out that on Skype I mentioned that we've been on the road for a week and two days, leaving 5 days left on our two-week soft limit (i.e. the length of time for which we've packed enough food for four humans, a dwarf, and four horses) would give us time to explore at least one hex from where we are and get back either slightly before or slightly later than this limit ('soft' because if it's like 2 weeks and 4 days it's not going to be that huge of deal).

Or to be more specific *copy-pastes from convo*
[3:47:50 AM] MortalCuriosity: You could explore the area of the old bandit camp (destroyed more than a month ago) then head back home, you could instead fill out that section of forest above that and be back with a day to spare. You could explore either of the tree or bridge hexes then shoot back north and come in just a little late again. You could even Go south for a day to the river, assemble the wagon into a makeshift raft, set the horses and dwarf free, then set sail for the Tuskwater and whatever waters run further south from the Little Selen River.

EDIT: Also, that proposed route I estimate to take approximately 15 days, 18 to get back or so. Assuming you mean starting at D5 (where we are) rather than D1 (where we were a month ago)

EDIT2 (The Editor Strikes Back): Also the river hexes, as long as there is a bridge across the river in that hex (or an easily traverse-able ford, like next to the bandit camp) then it only takes the normal length of time to explore the whole hex. If not, and no other means of crossing the river in a timely manner arises (boatwagon plan gains force here) then you'll have to explore it from opposite sides of the river before you can consider it fully explored (regardless whether there is an Event in the hex that you've already encountered on the correct side of the river).

Hehe, in Frodrick's defence, he's a warrior, not a miner. He has never studied dungeoneering or was trained in the art of valuing precious metals, despite having something more of a natural eye for it than a layman of any other race XD

What he was trained in, however, is how to survive off the land and keep a careful watch out for hazards or possible enemy attack.

Oh, I guess Appraise can be used untrained.

Well, I've counted it now (according to your char sheet you still have it... but then your char sheet also neglects to add your +1 Int bonus to Appraise checks).

Either way, Frodrick's skill at appraisal does not serve him in identifying whether the rock is at all valuable.

Also there's kind of a lot of stuff posted on Skype yesterday, if you wanted to check that out. A few of those things might be interesting to know for the party's Guide.

For four days Kyrie slowly nursed herself back to full health through a combination of complete bedrest and scarcely a couple hours a day spent being a poor patient an insisting on getting up to do something. This mostly consisted of her humble attempts to start a garden for the trading post.

Finally on the morning of the fourteenth, with the exception of some residual soreness and tenderness, Kyrie was fully combat ready, or at least perfectly healthy for some exploration.

Kyrie 12/13

Swinging a wide route away from the forest and the lands immediately surrounding, the Greenbelt Party travelled past Boken's hut to the last remaining area of the grasslands not fully mapped and explored. Hardly anything happened over the three days worthy of interest, with the possible exception of a wyvern seen flying out over the distant east, far beyond the beuaurocrat-defined borders of the Greenbelt, and Kryie's continued recovery.

Kyrie 13/13

With the complete area of the grasslands explored, it was time to get to work on the meat of the region, the large area dominated by hills on one side and forest on the other. Travel would be slightly slower than it had been up to this point, but also the mysteries, danger, and rewards would be magnified, if the abundant rumours and tales about this region held any truth.

Hoping to begin with rewards, the party kept a weather eye out for the sight of a large, lightning-blasted tree shaped like a claw as they travelled west. Luck would have it that they encountered barely any troublesome resistance to their exploratoration.

Not that the lack of hostility did much to put the group off their guard. The encounter with the shambler had shown them if nothing else, this land could very suddenly turn lethal regardless of appearances—though even on that note, the appearances of the Kamelands proved different from the usual fare.

Dotting the undulating hills, the great kames, the large boulders and chunks of stone strewn about as if left on the plain by giants, served to remind the party of the supernatural tales of fae magics and eldritch minds. It hardly helped matters that from the crest of every hill the party could see the miles-wide half-patterns seemingly formed by the supposedly random placement of the stones, pushing the idea that the great stones were not left by nature or chance, but by the design of some creature or creatures slightly futher into credibility.

These thoughts slowly faded as the first, then the second day went on without problems. If there was indeed anything ancient and mysterious going on in the region, it seemed content to allow the travellers to come and go as they pleased, and certainly the bandits had not seemed unduly harassed by forgotten and ancient entities.

Finally the sight of a tall, lightning-blasted oak tree, dead where it stood split nearly all the way down the middle but still standing tall like a black claw distracted the party from whatever thoughts they may have had concerning unusual rock formations.

Following the bloody 'x' on the map, they searched around the base of the tree for signs of disturbance, and sure enough Frodrick's keen survival instincts noted a patch of earth that had been overturned and since settled.

Kyrie's shovel proved useful not only as a tool of battle in loosening the overturned soil. The map did not indicate what the treasure cache was contained in, so they worked gingerly with the shovel so as not to smash anything fragile with its blade.

After only about 10 minutes of work, the earth gave up its bounty—a heavy, dirt-caked leather cloak wrapped into a bundle. Unrolling, they discovered what kind of treasure the bandit's lover had deemed valueable enough to make a living together with.

Inside was a masterwork dagger, a wand of unknown providence, a bright silver ring, and a book filled with the kind of jabber that typically indicated magic, or perhaps advanced mathematics. The legibility was made worse by moderate water damage probably the result of rain or snowmelt seeping into the pages. Nevertheless, what precious few pages remained intact could yet be worth something to somebody who knew their value.

-Dagger, mwk
-Wand (unidentified)
-Silver Ring (unappraised)
-Spellbook (undeciphered)

(Ladies and gentlemen, you have located the loot. As the adjectives in the parentheses indicate, a number of these objects have unknown properties and/or gold values, the exact nature of which can be ascertained through a number of means I'm just looking up now.

(Those with access to the detect magic spell and a few rounds of spare time can identify that none of the dagger, ring, or book are magical. Those who are also trained in the spellcraft skill may take an educated guess as to the function of the wand. Those with spellcraft can also make an attempt to decipher the contents of the spellbook, namely the five mostly undamaged pages. Finally anyone trained in appraise can attempt to work out a rough price for the ring [or just accept whatever Oleg pays you for it when you sell it to him]. Oh, and the read magic spell could do up the spellbook no hassle, if anyone has it)

(Oh yeah, and it may be worth noting that the silver ring doesn't actually match the description of Svetlana's missing wedding ring, either)

Once again (again) Frodrick proved that his age had not dulled his mind or his senses when he spotted a sharp crag jutting out of the side of a hill with an almost invisibly overgrown crack. Further exploration revealed that the crack—easily wide enough to walk into forwards—led down into a cave. Twenty feet into the cave the walls opened up into a fair sized cavern, the far wall of which sparkled yellow in the light of Miguel's magic. While no one in the party was experienced in mineral deposits, to the layman the cave wall appeared to glitter with gold (and hopefully not some other shiny yellow rock such as pyrite).

I freeze for a moment, wondering whether or not these monkeys have long fangs designed to puncture deep into flesh and rupture internal organs.

With mere seconds to spare, I gather my wits and throw up a defensive wind spell that flings the monkeys back from me in all directions.

After that I activate the protection matrix woven into my longcoat while drawing a black metal rod, about and inch thick and approximately two feet long. Finally, I wait to see if the monkeys change their mind or continue even despite their failed ambush before using more drastic measures to counter them.

(btw, I'm picturing them as literal monkey-sized creatures with large bat-wings, feel free to correct me. The wind spell would be set to throw them back regardless of size, aided by the fact that flying creatures suffer penalty against wind)

[Q&A] You should maybe check out Skype concerning actually picking our next heading. We (I)'ve determined that the treasure map led to somewhere around D5 or D6, so one of those two is likely to be our start. I've also detailed how long it should be before Kyrie returns to full health (I think it was the 14th?) and we can set out.

*Googles 'tinnitus'* Haha, well I don't know about everyone else, but I tend to get hard to reach for most of the day during my birthday. Other than that, family visiting means you don't spend as much time on the computer (assuming you don't want to look rude, so I suppose it depends on the family).

Other than that, feel free to shout profanities to fill the void. Oh yeah, and about some form of prompt, I would have no idea where to begin even about something like that. Whenever I actively attempt to prompt it usually goes at least partially ignored and I happen to be without ideas for inventing more character interaction right now.

This is only really supposed to be a short stop back home, but I suppose it'll take most of a week for Kyrie to heal naturally (since, according to previous prompt, no one is going to seek magical healing for her). Other than that we need a course of action (I know we're going to the hills... which is well and great, but that is barely more than a direction to go in, not a matter of 'let's go in this direction take these few, come back before our food runs out, etc.)

Granted I suppose I do know the first place to visit (depending on the accuracy of your map) so I'll probably start making a post on that venture... you know when I'm not working or visiting over the next few days.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and since most people tend to get their Q&A questions answered on Skype, I practically forget this thread exists except to update the first page rarely (which you'll notice I did after your last post, there) and whenever I suddenly realize (however many days/weeks/months late) that you've made another post in here about something.

“North part o' the Narlmarches, eh?” The trapper examined the area of the map Frodrick had indicated. “I got a couple traps in that area, but all of mine are marked, unless somebody after me went and hid them. That I can swear by as the stars see me—though come to think of it, the trap(s) you brought in looks familiar.”

He called to a hunter engaged in a chat with the guards—Frodrick recognised him as the very same they had met on their first trip into the forest near a month ago.

“Noel, what do you make of this?” he asked, indicating the trap Frodrick brought back and explaining the story of the trapped glade. “Remind you of a mutual acquaintance?”

The hunter named Noel glanced at the trap and inspected the area of the map. “Mutual acquaintance? You mean Breeg, that sarden bastard of a poxy sow?” He took a closer look. “I haven't seen that blighter in more than a month—and he still owes me money. I figure he'd gone and given up trapping and joined up with the bandits, but he may have left plenty of his traps laying about. And I wouldn't put it past him to leave his traps so that two-legged prey could get snared just as easily as any beast—he was a right foul piss-case.”

With a full audience, Frodrick chose to broach on his next topic.

“Sounds like a shambler come up from the south,” said the first trapper. “We don't get them up here so commonly, but occasionally one wanders further north, usually after it storms. Something about the lightning must make them wander-happy.”

“Usually the worst we have to contend with, besides the bandits, up north here are roaming owlbears, but every now and then something more dangerous shows its face. It'll be going back to its usual grounds before long, I wager. We'll let folk know as we pass, but I reckon most o' them'll know this forest well enough to stay away when they see the signs of a shambler in the area.”

(If you've forgotten who Breeg Orlivanch is, I couldn't blame you. He's listed in the minor NPCs from when you ran into 'Noel' here and he commented that if you saw him to let him know he's still got gambling debts to pay and let Noel know where. You haven't yet run into anyone of his description among the bandits, but that could just be because he wasn't with the Thorn Ford camp. Breeg is not to be confused with Falgrim Sneeg, who was a mercenary that once worked with Kesten before he robbed them and fled to become a bandit. Unlike Breeg, Falgrim has a reward associated with his capture, preferably alive.)

Even with such dramatic punctuation, Miguel kept up his song. He saw the mass of vines shake itself off and prepare to start barreling in pursuit of the cart. Noting his lack of ranged combat options, he fell back to the storage on the wagon. Already this early in their journey the chartered party had managed to collect an odd assortment of random loot.

He spied what he was after at once, and took the small, rune-inscribed rock out. The thing was possibly too slime-covered and this whole forest was too damp to consider the alchemist's fire, but this might be enough to deter their would-be predator.

Frodrick wheeled his steady mare around, lance now proudly bearing the standard of one bear trap. The dwarf saw as Miguel did that the wagon was not yet fast enough to escape the monster's charge. It's trunk-like legs came one after the other as it picked up pace. Frodrick knew he couldn't stand up to this thing's charge on his own, but with a little teamwork . . .

With a dwarven cry he directed Jargon to come back alongside the wagon—but facing the rear this time. Frodrick leveled his lance at the surging mass of vines as Jargon danced on her feet, awaiting her master's command.

The shambler caught up with the wagon a second time. Rather than attempting again to grab hold of the wagon and pin it down, it reached directly for Kyrie, the closest target on the wagon. The girl braced for a case of extreme gardening while Frodrick, almost completely ignored to the side, struck.

“Now, Protect!”

The great horse rose up on her hind legs. Frodrick thrust his lance up toward what might loosely be termed the monster's shoulder while Jargon kicked high at the limb reaching for Kyrie. Acting in concert they tried to throw off the monster's attack.

Despite their best efforts, though, the great fist of vines slammed down on Kyrie, bringing her to her knees and nearly flattening her to the wagon boards from sheer force (-12dmg Kyrie). Not content to give up the paladin quite so easily, the two managed barely to throw off the massive fist before it could take hold of Kyrie's half-senseless body and drag her from the back of the wagon.

Leaning on the butt of her shovel, Kyrie pulled herself back up to her feet. She knew better than to try to fight back in her condition and besides, she had already done her job in protecting her allies from at least one attack, even if it had nearly wiped her to do so. Of course, there was also a 10' gap between her and the monster, which was not something she ignore easily.

She fell back to the front of the cart next to Miguel and landed on the bench, half against her will as the wheels crossed a root sticking across the path or something of similar size and shape. The wagon was still gaining speed and others could pick up where she left off.

Krii, for one, was well ready to make a distraction of himself for the huge monster. Without slowing down, the sorcerer rode out across the footpath from the trees, firing a beam of cold at the upper parts of the monster as he passed. (-1cold Shambler), and rode on, silently daring the mound of vines to follow him for more.

Zeran continued to coax more speed from the horses and the wagon began to pull ahead faster than the monster could chase.

Determined not to lose its prey the creature grabbed at the retreating wagon, unable to gain purchase until the ham-fist closed on the back board. For a brief moment it seemed like they would be caught again, but the damage it had done to the hind parts of the wagon took it's toll. With a great crack the back board broke clean off, leaving the mound with nothing but wood and hinges.

Frodrick took advantage of the creature's distraction with the back board to turn his horse away as fast as he could ride, now that no one else was within the danger zone.

The shambler took a couple steps after the lot, but apparently recognized that this meal would be more trouble to continue chasing than it would be worth. It stopped after only a couple steps and watched silently as the greenbelt charter party escaped with their lives.

After the intense chase, the rest of the day was a very welcome degree of inactivity. The final excitement of the day came when Krii spotted another bear trap before Frodrick. It proved to be the last trap they would have to face until the next time they returned this way, as only minutes after taking care of that the party spotted the edge of the forest.

Eager to be free of the woods for each their own entirely understandable reasons, the group did not make camp until they had put at least a couple hundred feet between them and the outermost tree, far enough that any other predators would be well visible long before it could ambush them.

(Hey guess what? You survived! All pieces intact and plausibly alive. There's only a couple days left before arriving at Oleg's, and for further good news, Zeran's fever breaks on the evening of the 8th while travelling across the plains, and he's fully recovered to full health by morning on the 10th)

(Feel free to treat yourselves as if you'd arrived back at Oleg's already. I think you get there about midday on the... let's call it 9th (so Zeran hits full strength the next morning)

Miguel leapt up out of his seat when the green hulk appeared. The brave singer drew his sword at once and stood bold on the wagon, daring the vegetation to approach, all the while hoping Zeran could get this show on the road as soon as possible. In the face of the overwhelming bulk of vines and slime he did the only thing he could to counteract it. He began to sing even as it trundled toward the wagon.

For a brief moment Frodrick entertained the idea of luring the shambling monster into the bear trap and thus put a good use to the maliciously lain trap. He spurred Jargon into a jog as he drew his lance—moving toward the trap. No amount of cleverness would do them any good if the wagon could not escape the monster without being hobbled.

The dwarf thrust his weapon at the mechanism as he rode past. The trap sprung shut around the wooden shaft of his lance. Frodrick barely managed to avoid either dropping the lance or accidentally ramming the tip into the ground, but he caught the trap—and several shoots from the bush, tangled in the steel jaws. (-4dmg lance, [6/10] unbroken)

Zeran could only watch in horror as the viney fiend, almost as wide around as it was tall, surged toward the cart. On another day, he might have had a quicker reaction, but today was not a very good day for anyone.

The shambler surged toward the wagon, catching up with a handful of lumbering strides. Before the horses could get their feet under them and the wagon could begin to pull away, it slammed down on the back with one crude fist. The back wheels almost buckled from the force, and Zeran nearly lost his seat as the front end jerked up several inches like a see-saw and slammed back down.

Ever faithful but not fully trained, Bogdan and Matilda began to bolt, startled from all the action. They took no more than one or two steps each, however. The vines that composed the meaty fist which slammed onto the cart had begun to entwine themselves around the rear end of the wagon, preventing it from moving very far.

Kyrie saw immediately what had to be done and jumped at the vines, hacking several apart with the blade of her shovel. The shambler maintained its hold on the wagon, but they only needed to cause enough damage that the horses could break free.

Meanwhile Krii turned Vilify into the brush as he wove his spell armour around himself, preparing to strike at or lure the monster away from the cart once it had made it through the gap.

“Cut us loose!” Zeran cried his encouragement to Kyrie and Miguel, “we ain't going anywhere until then!” He took his pistol from his holster and set it on the bench next to him as a precaution. He kept one eye watching over his shoulder to see when he could take control and urge the horses on.

Shambler: Uninjured, Charge. Eat Wagon?

Needing no further encouragement, Miguel sucked in a deep breath at the beginning of a new phrase. What came out of his mouth next wasn't so much of a hearty sforzando as it was the sound of something crystalline shattering in a discordant chord.

Semi-visible razor-sharp shards of crystal launched from the air in front of Miguel, as if phsyically made of the sound of his voice. The shards tore into the body of the monster (-10dmg Shambler), but more importantly, several more shredded the vines of its fist, severing just enough of its grip to loosen the cart.

At once Zeran urged the horses into action, snapping the reigns to get their attention and force them to heave together. The wagon jerked and tore away from the last remaining vine, all the while Zeran hollered semi-delusional words at them in encouragement, including such as 'landlubber' and 'lily-livered varmint'. The man was ill, it was best not to question his train of though in the heat of battle.

They were hardly clear of the danger yet. For all that Miguel's spell had done to free the wagon, the mound of vines and slime seemed hardly fazed by the extra puss oozing out of its faceless body. Rather it seemed, still intent on charging down and consuming the wagon and all its fleshy occupants

(Okay, I slid in an extra two action because I had Zeran ready when the cart got stuck and I knew exactly what I needed to happen. Frodrick's turn would come next, having finished Miguel's and done Zeran's (newly rotated) ready action. Oh, in addition, Miguel's spell is one of the only that I know that can be cast while performing, so not only does it not interrupt him, but y'all still have the benefits, as long as you stay within pretty close to the wagon)

The second day of exploration started off on a low note, with yet another powerful looking bear trap spotted within the first hour of travel. Not long thereafter the grey overcast decided to unleash a gentle but steady rain over the forest. The newly budding trees provided scant cover from the rain, and even then only enough that when a branch was disturbed by the passage of some bird or another, it sent a shower of fat, wet drops down on those below.

Slowly but surely the rain covered everyone and everything in a fine layer of damp as the hours wore on. The next trap to cross the party's path didn't show up until half the day's travel was over. It was placed within the shadow of a bush growing on the side of a well-worn footpath that was clearly used both by hunter and game alike. What was worse, it came between two narrowly spaced trees, making it almost impossible to evade for anything attempting to pass that was larger than a lone traveler, and a guaranteed hit for a wagon driver like Zeran.

Frodrick called the party to a halt like he did every time, though by now Zeran knew enough to keep one weather eye on the road and the other on Frodrick to detect the dwarf's warning before he made it.

Before anyone could move to dismantle the fifth trap of the adventure, Miguel and Krii cried out in unison as a tremendous mass of vines and greenery heaved itself with a gurgling squelch seemingly out of the forest brush itself. The shambler from two days before stood hardly ten paces behind the wagon, pinning the cumbersome vehicle between the narrow trees on either side and the dangerous path ahead.

(For as long as you remain on the wagon, your move actions are dictated by Zeran's choice, and you are otherwise considered mounted for intents and purposes that make sense to count (i.e. Concentration on spellcasting, ranged attacks, when you can make melee attacks) if he takes a double move. For the record, though, let me recommend how valuable the cart's movement speed will be in a second.)

(The riders, Frodrick and Krii, will as per usual be able to dictate their own mount's move actions, and will have their own choice of whether they ride fast enough to cause the aforementioned disturbances with spellcasting and ranged attacks)

(Anyway, for initiative Miguel is the fastest reaction time, but Frodrick is just behind him and is actually in a position to do something useful, though Miguel could come up with something yet. The shambler is basically close enough that it'll basically be on top of you any second now unless you immediately high-tail it.)

The ogrish vine-monster long since gone, the group decided to go directly through the northern horn of the forest rather than backtrack around to the north. There was still half the day left of daylight, so the party made good time entering the forest before dark fell for the day.

In the closer forest setting it wasn't as easy to keep watch for miles. The first night was a little more on edge than usual. The first time they'd entered the forest they'd heard the tales of danger but had not actually seen anything more dangerous than regular wild animals and the packs of bandits. Since then, they'd been ambushed by a giant arachnid, seen corpses of deadly predators turned prey, been lured out intentionally by intelligent monsters, and watched silently from afar.

The night passed without remark, and like a bad dream, foreboding thoughts vanished with the morning light. Indeed there were a great variety of deadly things living in the forest, but working together they'd proven more than able to handle threats greater than most others would dare, and surely the dangers of the land could not be everywhere at once, especially if the trappers and hunters still frequented the area.

It was not more than a few hours that they proved themselves right about the trappers, but not in the way they'd have hoped.

After a few hours traveling the forest, slowly and laboriously compared to the easy, unobstructed mapping of the plains, Frodrick suddenly called to Zeran to halt the wagon.

He urged Jargon ahead several feet to where he caught the metallic glint of something half-buried in the leaves and dirt. He dismounted a safe distance away and selected a fat branch fallen over the winter from the treetops.

Frodrick tried to brush the leaves aside from the carefully hidden object only to have his suspicions realised and the branch jerk in his hand violently as the large steel bear trap snapped shut on the limb as it would a bear's foot or an unsuspecting traveler's leg.

The dwarf suspected the trap when he noticed the glint in the pile of leaves positioned directly where an animal or traveller following the path might tread. Whether it was laid intentionally or by neglect, some careless trapper had placed and hidden his traps in the area without first making sure that they were adequately marked for others trying to use the game trails and paths in the forest.

They cast the spent device to the side for the disappointed hunter to discover his efforts would bring naught this time, and perhaps as a warning to mark his traps.

Late in the afternoon it became readily apparent that covering the entire section of forest would be impossible before the day's end. At the same time, though, they realized the trap earlier would not be the last they would find. Frodrick destroyed the second trap as he did the first, and hardly an hour later did the same once more.

With no sign of the giant plant monster they made camp for the second day and slept a little easier than the first night had gone. Zeran's condition, which had been on the upturn the last few days took another turn for the worse. [-4/-2, reduced by rest to -3/-1 in the morning]

Over the first five days of Gozran (month dedicated to Gozreh, two-fold god of nature) the team worked their way back north along the edge of the Narlmarches. Kyrie's health took a turn for the worse the first night, but after that steadily improved until she woke up the morning of the fourth feeling in perfect health.

The windy weather on turned nasty on the third, blowing in an early spring thunderstorm. The inclement weather didn't last long and dumped most of it's rain over the forest before it even passed overhead.

Partway through the day on the fourth the party encountered a hunter coming from the direction of the forest. He warned that he had just earlier had a close encounter with a massive monster made of rotting vines and slime. After he delivered his warning he traveled south in hopes that the forest to the south would be a little tamer with this great monstrosity roaming the north.

Meanwhile Zeran's health waffled and wavered constantly throughout the five day period, neither getting substantially better, but under Kyrie's care, not getting much worse.

Zeran (Morning on 5 Gozran) – Diseased*, Ability Damage -3 Dex, -1 Con, -1 penalty to the dex things.

While exploring the final planned area of plains in the grasslands in the north, the party made sure to keep a fair distance from the edge of the forest, heeding the hunter's warning though not really expecting to run into much trouble.

It was so much the better, then, when Krii turned back to look at the forest during one of their passes near it's edge and noticed a hulking mass of vegetation, easily larger than an orc and twice as wide, almost perfectly blended in with the backdrop of the trees. It stood almost stock still for several moments, seemingly watching the party depart. In one of it's arms (it was impossible to say rightly if among the tangle of vines it possessed actual hands) it casually held the body of a wild boar sow.

After a couple moments the faceless creature turned back, lumbering into the forest, half dragging half carrying it's prize in one hand, to enjoy the freshly slain meat in the privacy of the trees.

Despite that excitement, though nothing further prevented them from their task. The party found that they had only spent half the day by the time they had completely mapped out the section of grasslands. They had the choice now to cut directly through the forest on their way back to Oleg's (mapping that as they went) or to take the safe and quick route around the northern edge (and thus get Zeran to shelter, where he might have greater success in recovery—and the option of a trained cleric, if his condition worsened).

At Kyrie's insistence the party continued on their exploration and mapping project. Throughout the day the girl felt under the weather, but the hardy girl kept up her good-natured attitude, and maintained that she would be fine. The day passed with little disturbance, but that would change come that night.

While Kyrie's symptoms did not worsen, Zeran found himself taken with a case of the chills. Soon the same muscle and joint pain and general fatigue experienced by Kryie showed up in him, accompanied with an equally high fever.

The first day of spring arrived with strong winds and good weather. Despite the pleasantness of the day, Kyrie and Zeran met it with bags under their eyes. Kyrie's symptoms were lessened, but still present, while Zeran was still suffering the full grips of the illness. While the girl felt she could go on despite the illness, it was quite another matter with Zeran, who did not have quite the same level of physical health as the farm girl.

It was up to him (or anyone else who would think now to object) whether he wanted to call the expedition short to seek shelter and recovery back at Oleg's, or to tough it out with Kyrie's ministrations and keep exploring.

The first night arriving in the southernmost area of the grasslands Kyrie began to notice she didn't feel quite so well.

At first she thought that the unpleasant warmth she was experiencing was merely a combination of the warm weather and her recovery from the mild frostbite leftover from the monster's attacks. By the evening of the thirtieth, however, there could be no doubt what she was feeling. She was feverish.

As night fell, general fatigue set into her body and her muscles and joints began to ache. Given the few days since the encounter with the will-o-wisp and its minion, there could only be one logical source for the contagion.

The faceless ball of light sighed audibly at Frodrick and Krii's vitriolic responses. “Typical mortals. Always thinking about themselves first. 'Oh, stop eating her!', 'Help, I don't wanna die!', or 'Mommy says it's not nice to scare people!' well you know what else isn't nice? Selfishness.”

The will-o-wisp grumbled to itself for a moment, seeming to forget the group was even there. Overhead, now beyond sight the shadow-fog-child silently fled to some safe place to lick its wounds and recover, or else fall prey to something hungrier and meaner.

“Very well, then. I suppose if I can't get you to lay down and die here I'll have to wait for it. It's only a matter of time now, you know.” The ball of light winked out with a distinctly miffed fizzling.

Detemined that the monster should not get a chance to harm either Kyrie or Zeran, Miguel hurried to chase it. His foot came down in a hidden foothole in the grass as he rounded on the monster and he stumbled. The acrobatic bard caught his balance easily, but he paid the price for the distraction, as he thrust to smite down the monster and found it had jumped back from him just as he spitted the earth with his dueling blade.

Kyrie refused to give the beast chance to rest with evading Miguel. She struck it while it's attention was drawn to avoiding the man's sword, scoring it once again across it's bloody body with the tip of her sickle, it's hide avoiding worse damage (-2dmg).

The ground near Kyrie's feet threw up a clod of dirt as Zeran's aim was forced away from it's target by necessity of avoiding harming his allies. He had the satisfaction of one good shot already this round, so he turned not dwelling on the particulars and continued his hunt to see if anyone else had actually come out this way.

For Krii the small monster proved especially effective at getting around his aim. It had retreated far enough into the fog that he could barely see it anymore, much less shoot it through Frodrick's back. He strafed to the right until he could see it clearly once more. He fired his minor jolt again, proving to have more luck with this spell than the other. He burned another patch of clothing with his magic and brought the monster one step closer to destruction (-1elec).

Frodrick stepped up with his axe in hand. He saw that Miguel was having trouble landing the finishing blow on the monster—with his sword and his music and his magic he made the likeliest to deal the finishing blow to the accursed beast. “Miguel, have at it!” He roughly prodded the monster off balance with the haft of his axe.

The monster hissed angrily at the dwarf as it stumbled back. It coughed and let out a low, crying moan. Seeing itself practically surrounded on one side, it took a step back. Recognising the need to retreat, it concentrated and became one with the fog again, this time ascending straight up and away as fast as it could. Miguel lashed out with his empowered sword—true to his advice, the cloud had no protection against magical weapons and the sword seemed to tear through the cloud like a knife through a sheet (-3dmg Near Death?). Unfortunately, the ragged fog monster drifted up only slightly hindered for his effort.

It was already far enough that it was beginning to be obscured by the fog—by the time Zeran finished reloading it would likely be long gone.

“Oh bother.” A sudden, ethereal voice from quite near Krii's head, causing the tall sorcerer to jump. A ball of light burst into existence floating several feet in the air over the ground next to Krii. “A good accomplice is so hard to come by.” The ball was no more than a foot across and glowed with violet light all over it's body, casting light like one of Miguel's spell lights.

“I don't suppose I could convince the lot of you to kill each other, no?” The airy voice sounded half-hearted, but with a hint of hopeful curiousity. It was exactly as Frodrick had said, a will-o'-the-wisp, or jack-o'-lantern, called by many names all referring to the same deadly monster.

“It's not dead!” Miguel called. “It's transformed. It's body is too vapourous to land a good hit, but it can still be harmed—use magic if you have any.” Miguel ran under the dense cloud body to the other side opposite Kyrie and Frodrick.

“Zeran—See if there's anyone still out there while you reload.” With that he cleared his throat and released a clear tenor that even the ambient fog could scarcely dampen, reinforced with power of his magical performance. Meanwhile the lights zipped several yards in the direction the monster attacked from, accomodating Zeran's search while not removing illumination from the battle.

Kyrie took Miguel's advice. It could still be hit, even like this. She wished she had her shovel rather than her shield on her—the latter wasn't doing much and she could hit harder with the spade. Nevertheless, she moved in to envelop as many as she could with her aura and lashed out with her sickle.

As she expected, her weapon passed through the dense cloud hanging just over the battlefield with almost no resistance. Exactly as Miguel said, though, Krii's electrical shock struck the gaseous monster just as well as it might have struck the physical. Though it was hard to discern body language or injury on a mobile cloud, it seemed to be affected (-2elec).

At the same time Krii moved to strike, Zeran jogged off deeper into the fog, becoming practically invisible except as a faint outline within a few seconds. He peered into the fog, searching for any sign of life in the night. He couldn't be sure where the original scream had come from, but it couldn't be more than a few more yards off.

Frodrick saw the effectiveness of Kyrie's attack and forestalled. He would rather wait to see if the cloud monster returned to physical form before he went swinging his axe at puffs of fog. This decision, of course, was completely uninfluenced by the fact that the cloud in question was floating more than a foot above his head.

The monster-fog in question meanwhile reversed it's original trajectory and wheeled around back toward Miguel's lights—and Zeran. Miguel tried to strike it as it fled, catching only empty air without striking the cloud itself.

While it might have seemed it was chasing for Zeran, it couldn't move nearly that fast in it's present form. Instead it settled behind Kyrie and resumed corporeal form once more, with the girl between it and Miguel and the spell lights fully behind it. No sooner had it's body taken solid form once more than Kyrie felt the hair-raising effect of being caught within it's shadow. As all times before, there was no apparent effect.
