Giles' spectral sword disappeared and reappeared floating at his side the moment the quickling left his line of sight.

Frodrick didn't need prompting to get after the fey. They had him on the ropes now. He ignored the wound bleeding out (-2dmg Bleed Frodrick) and rode back out through the breech. The blurred form of the quickling was sprawled over one of the many boulders that had once been a part of the wall proper.

Before the quickling could stagger back to his feet, Frodrick rode right up to him, dwarf and warhorse towering over the fey.

Rather than give chase, Kyrie focused her effort into a different avenue. She drew on the light within her, channeling her faith into a visible aura of light.

Giles crawled over the rubble. On foot he couldn't keep up with either Frodrick or the quickling, but he didn't need to. As soon as he caught sight of the grey blur, he mentally directed the phantasmal ink-pen blade. It disappeared in a blink, and reappeared directly over the quickling, thrusting downward. Rigg rolled, out of the way, but the blade still nicked his fey hide (-3dmg Rigg).

Miguel stumbled out after, drawing his wand. He was chasing Frodrick chasing Rigg, trying to get to the hardy old dwarf before he bled dry.

Zeran laughed out loud as he slid his new rapier out of its sheath. "Not so cheeky when you get hit, now are ya?" He stepped out through the breech, completing the trifecta surrounding the quickling. "Can dish it out but can't take it. You are worse then a kobold, at least they could take a hit."

He thrust at the downed fey. Rigg desperately rolled back. It seemed for a second like Zeran had struck, but it was merely the byproduct of the blurring effect that surrounded the quickling's every movement.

Rigg glared at Zeran. "I hope my lady destroys you." Without warning, from lying flat on the ground, Rigg levitated off the ground and took off straight upward. Jargon nipped and the other three sliced, thrust, and chopped at him as he took flight. Of the three, only Frodrick managed to strike home (-4dmg Rigg Badly Wounded) but he could not check Rigg's ascent.

Within a moment Rigg was flying as high as the outer towers of the keep, in among the branches of the trees.

Frodrick 48/58 - Ice Armour, B, F, Bleed -2dmg
Jargon 42/42 - Mount, B, F
Giles 42/42 - B, F, Spiritual Weapon (2/5), 18 arrows, 20 bolts
Kyrie 55/55 - -1LoH, Bastion of Good, Power of Faith (1/10)
Miguel 41/41 - B, F, Ability Damage -1Con, 18 arrows
Zeran 22/37 - B, F, Ability Damage -2Con (-5maxhp, -1Fort), 25 bullets

Rigg Gargadilly: Badly Wounded, Bloodied, Touch of Gracelessness (2/5) -3Dex (-1pen attk, AC, Ref, CMD), Levitating

(Up up and away~)

(In other news, I'll let you know if you can still see/hit the quickling as soon as relevant. I'm pretty sure the tree cover around that height wasn't so great that he can return stealth, but he definitely has some form of cover.)

Giles rolled his sword wrist, watching for his target. If the quickling was going to try to avoid this blade, he had other options. He waited for the next time the bugger showed his face.

Kyrie returned to Zeran. He didn't look like he was having a good reaction to the poison. She dropped her sickle to dense undergrowth, then loosed the shield off her arm, dropping that next to the first. She grabbed the healer's kit from her belt and prepared to treat him before the fey speedster came back.

Zeran wasn't doing so well in the meantime. His head spun while he reloaded (-1Con Zeran [-5maxhp, -1Fort] 22/37).

"Man, you losers are just too predictable." Rigg called. Once again his voice came from an invisible point in the air above them, projected with his magic.

Frodrick 58/58 - Ice Armour, B
Jargon 42/42 - Mount, B
Giles 42/42 - B, 18 arrows, 20 bolts
Kyrie 55/55 - Bastion of Good
Miguel 41/41 - Holding Charge, B, Ability Damage -1Con, 18 arrows
Zeran 22/37 - B, Poisoned, Ability Damage -2Con (-5maxhp, -1Fort), 26 bullets

Rigg Gargadilly: ???, Stealthed

"Says the guy who uses the same tactic for every attack." Giles called back. He only needed the fey to provide a target.

Kyrie worked quickly to treat Zeran's poisoned wound. When she was done she was satisfied with her work. "Good luck," she told Zeran, and slid her shield back onto her arm.
Heal check 13 + 9 + *2* = 24

"I can't help it that you guys have such a crippling weakness to my poison that I just have to reapply it after every hit."

Zeran's head continued spinning. At the worst, he didn't want to pass out before he got one more shot at the fey.

Not a moment off schedule, Frodrick saw the quickling's tell-tale grey shimmering blur beeline straight for Miguel. He saw at once that there was no way he would throw the quickling's aim at this speed, so he did the only other thing he could. Frodrick leaned over Miguel off his horse until he was practically out of the saddle and put himself in front of the blow.

"Huh?" The miniature fey landed needle first on Frodrick, confused (-8dmg Frodrick, Bleed). "Hey that's not fair, that was my last shot of poison! That wasn't for you, you big hairy oaf!" (Poison Resisted)

In the moment Rigg was distracted, Miguel struck with the spell he had been saving. He merely touched the quickling and the erratic purple effect disappeared into his body. His body tried to resist the transmutation that was now wreaking havoc on his motor skills (-3Dex Rigg (-1pen attk, AC, Ref, CMD)).

"You bloody—"

Giles finished the spell he had prepared to cast. A ghostly long sword appeared in the air next to the quickling, thin and sharp, and tapered oddly like the nib of a calligraphy pen. Without a second's hesitation it snapped at the quickling with an elegant thrust that the fey struggled to avoid (-5dmg Rigg). Already he was wearing down again, still worn down from yesterday's fight.

Zeran steadied himself. His nausea was beginning to clear (Poison Resisted). He fired on the quickling before it had time to get worse. The small fey spun from the force of the bullet grazing his shoulder (-4dmg Rigg Injured, Bloodied).

"All right! Swiv the lot o' ya with a rusty bloody nail for all I care!" The quickling's face was discoloured dark grey with rage. Rigg sped away, but the greyish blurred trail zigzagged erratically Miguel's spell conspired to destroy his coordination. The quickling took the corner too sharp and they saw him trip out of sight behind the wall (Prone?).

Frodrick 50/58 - Ice Armour, B, Bleed -2
Jargon 42/42 - Mount, B
Giles 42/42 - B, Spiritual Weapon (1/5), 18 arrows, 20 bolts
Kyrie 55/55 - Bastion of Good
Miguel 41/41 - B, Ability Damage -1Con, 18 arrows
Zeran 22/37 - B, Ability Damage -2Con (-5maxhp, -1Fort), 25 bullets

Rigg Gargadilly: Injured, Bloodied, Touch of Gracelessness (1/5) -3Dex (-1pen attk, AC, Ref, CMD), Probably Prone

(This round seriously did not go well for the quickling. Seriously. Initiative order is shuffled again due to a bunch of ready actions, but the important deets is that the square you believe Rigg to be prone in is about 15' from Zeran, and close enough that nearly anyone could double move to it, but only Zeran could single move.)

Giles strafed out of the way of the breech, holding his sword at the ready. Frodrick rode up in front of Miguel to cover the bard from further poisonous attacks. They scanned the walls and the courtyard, preparing for signs of movement.

Miguel sung the incantation for an impairing spell he learned recently. An glowing purple squiggle of magic appeared in his left hand, twitching erratically. Kyrie shifted to keep a wide guard out.

Zeran with his loaded gun and itchy trigger finger primed, called out. "Hey, Miguel, what's grey, annoying, and has no balls?"

The quickling's voice came from the air, "You once I'm done with you!" Zeran was hit from behind with sudden force. The quickling stabbed its poisoned needle into his kidney, pricking him through his armour (-15dmg Zeran 27/42 Bleed). Zeran's head whirled (Poisoned -1Con) but he spun and fired as the quickling retreated.

His shot ricocheted off a piece of stone rubble and the quickling hopped away, laughing. Zeran snorted and pressed the hot barrel to his wound immediately, cauterizing it before it had a chance to bleed him dry (End Bleed).

Kyrie wasn't fast enough to spare Zeran, but as soon as she locked eyes on the malicious fey, she called down divine retribution. It fled out of the keep through the breech in the wall, it would not be getting through her wall of power so easily.

Hex H1 - Camp Away From Keep
South Narlmarches

The next day the party quietly made their preparations for a second strike. The first time they had been caught off-guard and under-prepared for the resistance they met. This time they would take no such chances. Kyrie packed her first-aid supplies while Frodrick meditated and Zeran cleaned his pistol.

With luck, Rigg Gargadilly wouldn't have had time since yesterday to recover quite as well as they had. Once again leaving Stefan (and Frodrick's scale armour) with the wagon, they set out to see what they could do about the fey's attitude. There wasn't room in this Greenbelt for two self-proclaimed rulers.

Before they approached, Frodrick took an extra moment aside. He closed his eyes and reached out into the natural world with his thoughts. He called out to the native spirits of water and earth, chanting in dwarven. With a gentle glow from his hand, a shallow puddle of water suddenly sprung up out of the earth around his boots.

Frodrick carried on until he was satisfied there was enough conjured water for his purposes. The dwarf threw a handful of dirt into the puddle to muddy up the clear water with suspended silt, then finally prepared to cast his next spell.

This time he called on the water and the power of the cold north wind that was even now preparing to change the season to winter. The water reacted to the transmutation, flowing up Frodrick's body and freezing into the shape of a breastplate around his torso. The muddy ice was cool, but not uncomfortable. Frodrick rapped against it with his knuckles, checking its durability, then nodded, satisfied.

Approaching the keep the second time was no different from the first. The portcullis had been raised again, and there was no sign of habitation, though by now the party knew better. Frodrick scanned the gate, but couldn't tell if it had been rigged again.

While they drew their weapons to make sure they were prepared, Zeran announced his presence. "Hey, fairy boots! You failed!"

There was no response for a moment, then suddenly the air directly above the party filled with high-pitched giggling. "Hehehe, so you're back already? And here I thought you'd remember that thrashing I gave you for at least a week!"

Zeran called back to the unseen fey, "We've fought tougher kobolds than your tiny ass!"

Kyrie looked at the thick bushes and weeds. If they could keep the monster distracted for several minutes, she could probably cut a clearing... but chances were it would attack as soon as it had them trapped inside again. Instead she turned lead around south, the others following behind her.

"So are you saying you've been routinely bested by kobolds, too? How embarrassing!" Rigg responded, still unseen. The voice followed over their heads, presumably as the quickling sped along the wall.

"Won't that make it all the more embarrassing when you lose?" Zeran called back as Kyrie stepped through the rubble-choked breach in the south wall.

"Big talk from the loser!" The quickling shouted. "I bet you wouldn't be so brave if you didn't have... this!" There was an ear-splitting ring like yesterday. Giles' cold iron sword rattled again, but once more he suppressed the magic with his will.

The fey cussed like a sailor. "You can't stay lucky forever, mark my words!" Though his voice came from a vague point in the air between the breach, the party spotted the grey head of the quickling atop the wall, leaning over the crumbled section. Before any of them could react, he zipped out of sight.

Frodrick and his cargo rode clear of the fort before the quickling had a chance to trap or crush them with the portcullis. They were gone into the woods within a moment.

Kyrie laid her hand on Zeran's wounded, bloody shoulder, and willed his wounds to close with positive energy (+11hp Zeran 30/36). Giles met up with them and the three made for the south wall. The portcullis gate was marginally closer, but with the quickling in the gatehouse they didn't dare try for it.

True to expectation, a second later the heavy portcullis dropped loose and slammed down. There was no sign of Rigg yet, but the three kept their guards up.

A moment later, as they cross half the way to the south wall, Rigg's disembodied voice came up. "I should have dealt with this from the beginning. Bah!" There was a sudden high-pitched keening in the air around Giles' sword. His blade rattled alarmingly in his hand, as if it were about to tear itself apart from the sonic vibration. After a second the sound died away and nothing happened.

"Confound you all, you execrable creatures! Git! Get out! Shoo!"

The three needed no convincing, though they took care not too present an easy target on their way out. They left to the tune of a myriad of curses and threats what the quickling woul do to them if they ever returned.

Kyrie bent over and scooped up the limp body of Baron Miguel. She tried not to smack anything vital off her shield as she hefted him up mostly one-handed onto Jargon's back. Frodrick responded immediately by spurring Jargon into action. He braced Miguel's body with his free hand and steered with his knees toward the gate.

The evacuation pony was passing under the portcullis as Giles moved in on Rigg. He would buy the others a few extra moments to escape, if he could, and at least make sure the murderous fey remembered them if he couldn't. He swung down on Rigg's head, but the quickling was already recovering. He dodged easily.

Zeran reloaded, sticking next to Kyrie. He knew where to be for the best chances of surviving, and he knew he might get another shot at Rigg if he was just patient.

Rigg shook himself off. "How about no?" He darted away from Giles faster than he could react. Instead of fleeing back around the curvature of the tower, he turned straight for the south wall with its massive breech. Without even breaking stride he leapt and sailed over the debris and rubble clogging the gap and vanished outside the keep.

Less than a moment later he reappeared crawling over the top of the wall to the east, then vanish into the gatehouse.

Giles stepped out into the quickling's path, scanning the bushes for any sign of it. He'd leave taking care of Miguel to those not currently holding a writhing concentration of void in their left hand.

Frodrick waited and watched Miguel. If the lad fainted, horseback would be the fastest and safest way out. As Giles moved forward to intercept the quickling, Kyrie moved for Miguel, just in case it ran around him and came for the weakened member.

Miguel grabbed his head and tried to spend his possible last few minutes of consciousness wisely. He concentrated and cast a spell on himself that would reinvigorate his spirit, and hopefully with it, his body.

The quickling's voice sounded as thrown by whatever voice masking magic he was using. "Five little monkeys, jumping on the bed."

He moved to get between Frodrick and Kyrie and waited as the edges of his vision grew darker. The nausea was beginning to pass. Maybe he was going to throw off its effects after all?

Kyrie and Frodrick watched Miguel go from swaying to collapsing (Miguel Unconscious) (Poison End). "All right, lads and lass. Time we cleared out. Strategic retreat!" Frodrick bellowed.

The dwarf threw his shield over his shoulder and rode around to the side of Miguel. "I need somebody to lift him up. Don't forget his sword!"

Rigg's taunt continued "One fell off and bumped his head."

Zeran moved wide, waiting to get a shot at the fey to make sure it didn't think about chasing them.

"Four little monkeys jumping on the bed—"

Giles blinked and almost missed the grey blur. He tensed. He was not going to get this lucky twice. He struck out with his fingers right as Rigg leapt through the air at him.

"Aiaiaiai! Bad touch!" The quickling spasmed and fell to the ground (-12dmg Rigg Bloodied). The speedster landed on his feet, but couldn't regain his momentum to attack. He needed to catch his breath (Staggered).

He sped away half-heartedly. Giles swiped at him, slashing a shallow wound across his upper back (-4dmg Rigg). The quickling didn't have the speed to stopping by the south entrance to the central tower.

Zeran fired but aimed too wide, now too used to shooting wildly ahead of the greyish humanoid blur.

Giles knew it would be hopeless to try to chase the quickling down, but if he could keep eyes on him, he'd have to work to take cover and duck out of sight. He strafed wide, holding the crackling black energy to be released at just the right moment.

For someone on two legs, the quickling was a near impossible target, but mounted on four, for Jargon and Frodrick, it was merely improbable. Frodrick crowed and spurred Jargon toward Rigg Gargadilly. He harassed the quickling with a swing from his axe, more to keep the pressure on than to be a threat.

Kyrie kept pace just behind. She had virtually no manoeuvrability, but so long as she stood, the murderous little fey was going to have to deal with her if he wanted to hurt anyone else, and when he did, sooner or later she would get a hold of him.

Miguel and Zeran kept up with Kyrie, Zeran reloading his pistol, grinning from his success in making the quickling angry. Miguel on the other hand was only feeling worse (-1Con, -1Fort, -4maxhp 20/29). Miguel looked to Zeran. "Did he say blue whinnis?"

"I may or may not be about to go unconscious in the next five seconds. Just so you know."

Rigg Gargadilly cackled and turned to flee. Frodrick leaned sideways off his saddle and boosted the small fey on his way with an axe blade right where the good gods split 'im (-3dmg Rigg). As the greyish blur sped away, Frodrick thought he noticed the slightest wobble in its path (Injured).

(By the way, in case anyone was wondering what was up with Jargon's attacks/lack thereof, I'm just not including any attacks that miss. There are only so many ways to describe a horse rearing up and kicking/biting every round, so if I can limit that to the times when she hits with those limbs, it gives them more significance. Not that you need to imagine Jargon repeatedly missing every time she does nothing in a round—sometimes she just doesn't have the ability to make more than one attack, sometimes she's busy.)

Giles took a chance. As soon as Rigg vanished, he dropped his guard. Judging from the time between each of the quickling's attacks, he should have just enough time to chant a spell to be ready for when he returned. He murmured the spellcasting mantra, calling up the black, crackling energy of void into his hand. He held the energy and waited for his next shot at the little blighter.

Miguel also took the opportunity to cast a spell. He stepped over to Kyrie, singing a spell to imbue her with battle morale that would give her an extra edge when trying to get a hold of the quickling.

Zeran reloaded and scanned. Miss it once shame on you. Miss it twice, shame on me. Miss it three times... actually he was pretty sure this situation didn't really apply here.

Kyrie saw everyone else preparing their enhancements, and took the idea to do the same. She concentrated on the power of the light within her and let it shine. She began glowing again, bathing the front half of the courtyard with morale raising light.

The quickling's voice came from inside the tower again. "You guys are really eating up my poison. I'm going to have to go harvesting after this. Tell me, which one of you has the worst reaction to blue whinnis so my last few doses don't go to waste!"

Miguel rolled his eyes. "The dwarf. Definitely try the dwarf next."

Everyone braced for the quickling's next attack. There was no telling where he might appear.

A sudden pitter-patter of tiny crazy-ass feet came from the south. Rigg was getting cocky and less careful about sneaking up. Miguel saw the grey blur moving in on him and jerked back out of reflex. It was nigh impossible to avoid the quickling's blade, but he took a scratch rather than a lethal needle plunged into something tender (-1dmg Miguel) (-1Con Poisoned) (no Bleed).

Rigg hopped away. "Shucks, I—whoa!" Miguel's sword near cut off one of Rigg's floppy antennae (-4dmg Rigg).

"Now there's no need to be sore about i—" A familiar crack of powder cut him off and Rigg only narrowly dodged the bullet in part by it deflecting off his supernaturally fey-tough body (-5dmg Rigg).

"Fine! Have it your way!" The quickling sped away. Miguel tried to take the opportunity to get another swing in, but his sword cut through the tail-end of the blurry grey blotch. In the meantime, he was getting nauseated.

The quickling was still within sight, evidently having taken a long shot to get around Kyrie to get to Miguel.

Zeran reloaded while Kyrie moved to place herself between Giles and any attacker coming from the south. Miguel rounded out the wall while drawing his wand. It was Zeran's turn for a dose (+5hp Zeran 19/36) (22 charges).

Giles called out. "You like my sword, do you? Come, then. I'll give you a closer look."

Frodrick's keen eyes saw the faint blur of motion returning. "Here he comes! Everyone ready!" (+Challenge). Instead of coming after Giles, he saw the blur blink straight toward Kyrie.

"Changed my mind!" the quickling shouted.

Before Kyrie had time to react, she felt a weight collide with her shield.

"Eh? You got lucky, girlie!" The quickling flipped backward off the shield. Zeran reacted first and put a hole into the dirt next to the fey. Kyrie lunged to grap a hold of the small fey. He danced under her grasp and thrust at her leg armour (-2dmg Kyrie).

"Not that lucky! You want a piece of ol' Rigg, you gotta try harder than that!" The poison on the blade messed with her head, but passed in a moment (Poison Resisted).

The quickling whooped and sped away the same way he had come, back out of sight around the tower.

(Okay, when I say all we have to do is wait for him to get cocky, I should probably clarify that I mean, we're waiting for his perfectly justified hubris to bite him in the backside. Also, note for Zeran as a reminder, every missed piece of ammunition has a chance of being recovered whole. Just the powder is lost still.)

Zeran clutched his shoulder with his free hand (Bleed -2dmg Zeran), stamping through the bushes to get near Kyrie. The faintness passed within a few moments (Poison Resisted). He sailed a choice finger gesture at the small grey fey and pointed his pistol. In the moment between when he pulled the trigger and the bullet struck the dense vegetation, Rigg danced aside with inhuman speed and reflex. "Hah! Missed me, you gigantic oaf!"

Zeran grunted, but payed no mind to it. He was busy trying to stop the bleeding. He pressed the still smoking-hot barrel of his pistol to his wound. There was a hiss, and he winced from the hot metal on tender flesh, but it did the job (Bleed End).

Now that Kyrie finally had eyes on target, she brought down the power of her aegis. Rather than go chasing after him through the bushes and ivy, she simply moved to join Zeran, standing between the two. It was a simple dare—did the fey think he could move fast enough to go all the way around without getting caught, or did he risk getting within arm's reach of her for a quick getaway?

Giles ran in to add his own challenge to Kyrie's, only his was rather more pointed. He stepped up beside Zeran and thrust his blade down at the fey before he had a chance to disappear again. Rigg bent over backwards at an impossible angle as the blade passed directly over him (-5dmg Rigg) "Whoathatwasclose."

On the other front, the wave of rats flowed from the northeastern tower like a busted granary. The swarm spread wide, the forepart going after Miguel, the latter moving in on Jargon's legs. Miguel hacked at the rats around his feet (-5dmg Rat Swarm). The remaining quantity of brown furry bodies had dwindled, and suddenly those who still lived found their natural timidity overcoming their swarming behaviour (Dispersed).

They scattered and dispersed away from Miguel, most toward the corners of walls, but several joined with their cousins swarming Jargon. The mare stomped, and Frodrick leaned over and swept his axe through the body of rodents swarming up her legs (-8dmg, -5dmg Rat Swarm). They chewed and nibbled at her armour and all the weak points between (-6dmg Jargon). She bucked and kicked, unable to shake them (Distracted).

Frodrick swung at the rats, trying to throw them off Jargon. This plan clearly wasn't working, so he spurred her into moving away from the swarm, filling out the widening flank Zeran was attracting. Most of the rats hanging off his horse fell away back into the swarm, or dropped individual and scattered along the way.

Miguel charged his sword with energy and swung his sword through the largest mass of rodents (-3dmg Rat Swarm). This group, too, began to dissolve and scatter. All told there were still a total probably well over a hundred rats left alive in the area of the fort, but they had lost any sense of cohesion (Dispersed). Miguel quickly turned to join back up with the body of the party.

Rigg Gargadilly looked up at the tallfolk closing in on him, grinned, then suddenly faded from sight. His disembodied voice echoed in the air between them. "Man, I have seen some suckers in my day, but you guys are a riot!"

Frodrick almost didn't catch it, but he saw the faintest of grey streaks shoot away from the bushes a second later, cleaving close to the curve of the central tower's outer wall and zipping out of sight around the south of it.

The voice came again from the inside of the tower. "You! Who dares to bring the Iron into the the Lady's domain! I'm coming for you next!"

Knowing that the voice coming from the central tower was a fake, Zeran became suspicious of the sounds of movement coming from the tower next to him. He crept through the open doorway and scanned the rubble-filled room for signs of stealthy blighters.

The top of the tower was open to the elements, with every floor above rotted away into the heap of rubble at his feet. There didn't seem to be anyone or anything in here except—wait. A small brownish body popped from under the rubble. Then another. Then three more. His heart sank.

Less than a moment later the floor was covered in a dense swarm of over five hundred rats and Zeran was backpeddling. "Oh shit, rats! Help!" If there was one thing he knew from living in the River Kingdoms, it was that you don't stand in the way of a swarm of hungry rats.

He fled the room, cursing to himself. "If you're going to die, it won't be eaten alive by rats."

Kyrie moved to meet him. She had a hunch that this was exactly the kind of distraction that would have an enemy flying out of the shadows.

Giles followed Kyrie, keeping his sword at the ready. Rather than aiming to come to Zeran's aid, he aimed to keep the biggest wall in the area between him and that little monster, and hopefully get a swing at it if it showed its face again.

Frodrick turned Jargon toward the swarm of rats nipping at her hooves. She reared up and stomped at least a fair dozen flat with each hoof (-4dmg, -5dmg Rat Swarm Injured). That might learn them. He guided his mare around to cover Zeran's other flank, in case the monster struck from the other direction.

Miguel moved to intercept the rat swarm. If things turned ugly, he could pull out a little trick to blow most of them all away, but he didn't want to spend all his energy on the little fights. He hacked at the pile of writhing bodies with his sword (-5dmg Rat Swarm Badly Wounded). Between he and Jargon, the numbers of rats were depleting quickly.

The high-pitched voice returned, just inches behind Zeran's head. "Whateverblowsyourhairback!" Zeran turned his head in confusion and alarm. Frodrick saw the greyish black blur coming from around the south side of the central tower, but not soon enough to warn the gunslinger.

Zeran caught a half-second glance of a small grey man, shorter than a halfling, flying through the air at him. He flinched, but not fast enough to get out of its way. It landed boots first on his chest, and sprung off, blurring away to the south some twenty feet.

Immediately after Zeran realized he felt ill, the effects of a neat stab between where his leather cuirass met the shoulder pad (-20dmg *crit* Zeran 16/36) (-1Con Poisoned).

The pint-sized creature turned and taunted. "Nah-nah, you can't catch me!"

The crew on the ground scanned the courtyard. The bushes and trees betrayed no hint of a miniature maniacal fey. Zeran shuffled foward, peering around, waiting for something to shoot. He glanced into the doorless (NE) tower next to him. There was nothing there but rubble from the collapsed roof.

Kyrie put her sickle away. If it made its advantage by moving fast, whatever it was, she would try to put a stop to that.

Giles made a weighted decision to get off the high ground and out of the open as soon as possible. He jumped down from the wall and landed with a roll (-1dmg, -2sub Giles Prone). He quickly got back to his feet, a defensive wall of Kyrie and Frodrick blocking the creature from getting to him.

Frodrick held his axe ready. From atop Jargon he had the widest reach of anyone. He waited for the thing to appear so he could intercept whoever it chose to come after next.

Miguel dropped from the roof next, slightly more graceful than Giles (-4sub). He sheathed his wand and charged his sword with arcane energy.

A small, high-pitched voice suddenly sprung up from somewhere in the keep. "Greetings, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Rigg Gargadilly, and I will be your murderer tonight." It sounded like it was coming from just inside the large central tower.

Giles nodded. "It wasn't real. Must have been an illusion of some kind. He's throwing his voice."

(You cannot see into the central tower from here, but you do know the lack of vegetation and undergrowth in there would hamper your manoeuvrability less. Unfortunately it would also do the same for him. At the same time, the lack of foliage would mean he has nothing to hide behind, but you can probably bet that he's fast enough to dart in and out regardless.)

Giles eyed the gatehouse over the portcullis. He could see no way to get up to it, but eyeballing the stonework of the wall (with its copious hanging vines for support), he figured he might have a chance of it. He sheathed his sword. "I'm going to get the gate open. Who's coming with me?"

Miguel sheathed his sword and rolled his shoulders. "It's been a while since I've had a good chance to do some climbing." The other three stayed at ground level, backs to the wall, keeping watch in case the keep's inhabitants happened to show up.

The two men scaled the ancient wall the 15' up to the battlements. At the top they drew their swords again and cautiously moved toward the gatehouse. Nothing jumped out of them as they entered. Giles Climb 17+2 = 19; Miguel Climb Take 10 = 16; Success.

The small room was rather empty and abandoned looking, like everything else. Creeping and climbing vines had invaded here through the open doors the same as the rest of the keep. Giles approached the large, heavy chain which responsible for raising and lowering the portcullis.

Here Giles found the other half of the vine that Kyrie and Miguel had stepped on below. It was carefully tied to the locking mechanism on the winch, so that when disturbed, it would release the gate to the call of gravity. Giles removed the vine while Miguel stood guard at the door they had entered. With the vine out of the way, he grabbed the heavy crank and began raising the portcullis.

Outside the party watched the heavy bars of the portcullis raise in stages until it reached the top. Now they could escape out the front door without worry about the trap again, if they needed to make a quick getaway. Then Giles' voice rose from inside the gate house, rolling off such a profusion of curses that the others assumed he must have been a sailor at one point. Miguel's voice followed a second later. "Quickling!"

Inside, the moment Giles finished bringing up the gate, he realized he had dropped his guard. There was a manic giggle from directly behind him, as if coming from some child with a psychotic sense of humour and a sudden, stabbing pain in his lower back (-9dmg Giles). He cursed mentally and vocally at the same time as he whirled about, already feeling the effects of whatever poison was on that blade (Poisoned -1Con).

He barely dodged the small creature's second trust up at his gut (-11dmg Giles 16/36). He saw what looked like an oversized sewing needle, scaled up to just over a foot long, and a greyish black blur leaving the gatehouse through the door opposite Miguel at an incredible speed. "Ha-ha! Too slow!"

Miguel's eyes popped. While he didn't get any better of a look at the creature than Giles, it wasn't hard to pick from the list of creatures he knew that moved so fast their bodies literally blurred with magic. "Quickling!"

Giles could feel the blood still running down his back (Bleed -2dmg Giles). He needed something to close up one or two of these wounds, fast. He popped his potion back as he moved for the door (+7hp Giles 21/36). He redrew his cold iron long sword. "Look alive! We've got company! It's small, fast, and uses poison!" For a second he felt like blacking out, but he shook it off and the feeling passed (Poison Resisted).

Miguel was right behind him, drawing Tiressia's wand as he moved. Already it was proving highly useful (+9hp Giles 30/36) (23 charges). "It's a small fey. Its magic makes it hard to see when it's moving and invisible when it's not!" He looked around the courtyard. The place was literally full of hiding places. The quickling could be hiding in any bush or behind any tree.

Miguel ached in many places. He drew the wand they had received from Tiressia and activated it. A glow from the tip of the stick replenished his energy and soothed his wounds, but only barely (+3hp Miguel). He frowned and examined the tip of the wand, then shook it off and tried again. This time the results were much more satisfactory (+9hp Miguel).

Behind him his friends struggled to lift the heavy portcullis. He glanced around the overgrown courtyard. For the home of a crazy dangerous evil fey, it seemed awefully quiet. There was virtually no way anyone could have missed the sound of the gate crashing down unless maybe they were deaf. Perhaps no one was home. Or maybe they were all just waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike...

The bard shook such paranoid thoughts from his head and went to help with the portcullis. The third time proved to be the charm, and they managed to hold up the gate long enough for Giles and Zeran to slip under. After they got a small boulder to stick under the gate. It wasn't much, but it would give them a foot or two clearance—just enough to slip under if they needed to make an emergency escape.

After that was done, Frodrick told Stefan to take the wagon deeper into the forest and wait there for the party's return. The last thing they needed was their transportation being sabotaged while they were away. Stefan started to protest, but Frodrick was not going to drag any squire of his into a situation he wasn't sure of himself.

Finally, Frodrick led Jargon around the south wall of the keep, then gently coaxed her over the rubble and into the keep. He groaned on seeing all the overgrowth and decided to remain mounted. He would be little use in a fight if he could hardly move.

He caught up with the others as they made a full circle of the courtyard. The southwest tower was little more than a heap of rubble choking out the hollow shell remaining. It might be worth having a poke around in there later to see if anything of value was buried under the debris, but for now there were other things to take care of.

The northwest tower, on the other hand, was the most complete, not counting the central tower. Even moreso on this tower than the others, long brown, leafy vines virtually covered the white stone. Tied up in the vines like grisly decorations, the party could see bleached humanoid skulls hanging from the tower's upper reaches.

At ground level the closed wooden door was covered by a cloak of hanging vines. Unlike the door on the southeast tower, this one, though covered in moss, was clearly beautifully carved and visibly ancient—the only door lucky enough to have survived the passage of time from the original, it seemed.

The central tower meanwhile opened from both sides into a wide chamber. Compared to the outside, the floor of this chamber suffered very little overgrowth. Rather the floor was tiled with some sort of pattern, though obscured in placed by dirt. Inside this chamber, visible from outside, was a spiral staircase leading up to the second floor.

The party drew their weapons as they approached the open gate. Inside the keep was no less overgrown than out. The courtyard was filled with bushes and undergrowth, and even a few trees of good size grew within the walls. It was well known that elves favoured natural themes and incorporating nature into their architecture, but this was probably not the result of that aesthetic.

Miguel and Kyrie crossed the threshold first. By the time either of them noticed the vine lying innocuously under the arch, it was too late. A heavy, mechanical 'chunk' was the only warning either of them had.

Kyrie dove free of the archway, but Miguel was just a second too slow. He rolled forward, but the heavy spiked portcullis slammed down on his back, throwing him to the ground in front of the gate (-20dmg Miguel 13/33).

Nothing in the forest could have missed the sound of that ancient portcullis dropping, but in the next few moments, absolutely nothing stirred inside the keep courtyard. Now trapped inside (if one didn't count the breech in the wall to the south), Kyrie and Miguel took a look around.

Besides the trees and undergrowth, they could see the two eastern towers to their left and right. To their right the northeastern tower was missing its roof and door, but to their left, the southeastern tower had a rough-cut door, obviously a recent installment.

(Note that the entire courtyard of the keep is made up of dense undergrowth. This means everyone is going to be dragging along at half-speed (or worse, for larger undergrowth) and nobody is going to be using a 5' step for a while.)

(If the others want to get in (or Miguel and Kyrie change their minds and desperately want to leave) they may choose to attempt to lift the portcullis (Str check), climb the wall (Climb check) or go around to the south side to climb over the rubble.)

The party traveled around the headwaters of the Murque and came around the south side. The trees in the Greenbelt grew larger and older the further south one went, but the party had never been this far south. While not ever single tree was a grand ancient oak or towering beech, on a wild guess at least some of the ones they passed must have been older even than Frodrick.

On the seventh day of Lamashan they found what they were looking for.

(7 Lamashan)
The white stone of the ancient keep loomed out of the forest, surrounded on all sides by towering trees. The cracked, circular walls of the keep stood 20' tall and were hung thick with vines and moss, with four towers that sprouted out of the walls as if they were the trunks of great, white trees themselves.

Three of the towers rose high into the forest canopy, while the fourth, the southwest tower, was completely collapsed. Only one of the three towers retained its roof, which stretched over 40' tall into the branches and hanging moss of the surrounding trees. A fifth tower, a marble-white spire, rose from the centre of the courtyard, wider than the wall towers and stretching as far as any of the party could see through the overgrowth.

The party circled the keep from a distance, warily taking in the view through the trees, before getting closer. In addition to the southwest tower and heavy adornment of vines and moss, the keep showed its age in its south wall, which had crumbled (or been breached during some long forgotten conflict) into a rubble-choked opening in the side of the tower. The east wall featured an overgrown path leading up to an open, arched gate whose doors had long ago rotted away.

Upon coming closer, the Greenbelt charter party could make out the faded remains of ancient carvings in the white stone of the outer wall. Miguel sucked in a breath upon examining these markings on the stone.

"These carvings are ancient—like actually ancient. These designs are commonly seen in elven architecture from before the Earthfall* exodus. There just isn't much more ancient than that."

From here the ruins seemed completely and utterly abandoned. The party trusted that the dryad's information was probably correct concerning the inhabitants, but there didn't seem to be anybody around.

(*Whether you know it or not, you've probably all heard of the Earthfall, because it's one of my favourite go-to examples of 'ha-ha, elves suck'. The Earthfall was an event close to over 9000 years ago that very nearly destroyed civilized life on the face of Golarion in a hail of meteors summoned by powerful aboleth magics.

Forewarned by their diviners and astronomers, the majority of the elven population fled off-planet back to their homeland, Sovyrian. Those few elves who refused to leave took shelter underground and were transformed by the cataclysmic energy unleashed by the impact into the drow. Elves as a race would not return to the planet for several thousand years, effectively ceding it entirely to the humans.)

Giles waded into the river and took a second pass at the stump of the neck he had cut off. Instead of slashing, he pressed the flat of his flaming blade up against the exposed interior. This time he was sure to cauterize the tissue, preventing any hint of regrowth (-3fire Head B Cauterized).

The hydra squealed, more in annoyance and anger than pain, retreating deeper into the river (+5hp Hydra). The three remaining heads reared back and fell upon him. He handily avoided the first chomp, but the second came too close for comfort. He only held it at bay with a quick swing of his flaming sword (-5dmg Giles 14/36). The effort was beginning to take its toll on him.

If the hydra was allowed to retreat too deep into the river, they would be force to fight it on its terms on terrain (or lack thereof) that was best suited to its strengths. Frodrick decided it was probably best to avoid this at all costs. He ducked behind his shield and rode Jargon into the silty river. One of the hydra's heads lunged at him, but couldn't get through his defenses. He rode around behind it, until the water was up to Jargon's chest. If he fell in now, he'd have a heck of a time walking back to air and dry land.

Kyrie drew the monster's second attack as she waded deeper into the Murque. The hydra hissed, but that didn't save it from losing a third head (-7dmg Head C). Now down to only two heads, the hydra was quickly running out of options for attacking (-5dmg Hydra).

Zeran, reamining on the river bank, reloaded his pistol and fired into the hydra's body again. The cumulative damage was coming faster than it could regenerate (-6dmg Hydra, Injured).

Miguel drew his sword with his other hand as he waded into the water. Noticing the efforts of Zeran and Stefan, he called out, "what happens if we kill the body without cutting off the heads?" Aiming for the body under the water wasn't easy, but he gave it a shot. He mentally charged his sword and thrust it into the water. He met significant resistance that told him he had struck flesh (-7dmg Hydra Bloodied).

On the hydra's right flank, Stefan was mimicking Frodrick's plan to keep the monster contained. He rode Uriel into the river shallows as he drew another arrow. If the monster wanted to run this way, he wouldn't make it easy. He let loose his arrow, striking just below one of the stumps (-4dmg Hydra).

"I'm not sure, let's find out. Giles waded deeper into the water, spying an excellent chance to use Frodrick's positioning to his advantage. Rather than aim for another head, he aimed his sword lower down the neck and stabbed into the mass of serpent lying just below the surface.

The water hissed as loud as the hydra as it met his flaming sword (-14dmg, -2fire Hydra Badly Wounded). The hydra heaved and screeched. It lunged at Giles with one head while at the same time the other turned to escape down river. Giles had no energy left for dodging, and the hydra's fangs sunk into his torso (-6dmg Giles 8/36 Bloodied).

As it turned to escape (+5hp Hydra), the three standing in the river shallows struck the moment it dropped its guard. Giles slashed with the last seconds of his flames spell, but bounced off the hydra's tough scales. Kyrie turned her shovel into a blunt hammer against the exposed neck while Miguel stabbed into the water (-12dmg, -6dmg Hydra)

The huge monster collasped from the wounds, its two remaining heads falling into the river shallows (Unconscious), two arrows sticking from its necks and half a dozen wounds, some of which were still closing at an accelerated rate.

Despite the rate at which the hydra's wounds were recovering, the party were able to work quickly to put a final end to it (Coup de Grace Hydra Dead). When the regeneration finally slowed and stopped altogether they knew the beast was finally down for the count.

Not seconds after Kyrie had lopped off the first head, Giles was already setting his sights on another. He hoped the fires from his sword would be enough to cauterize it with the same attack. The soldier stepped in and brought his sword down on the neck of the head closest to him (-7dmg Head B Severed). The head dropped off, but the stump was merely scorched by the flames (-2fire Head B).

Though the monster was down to only three heads, he knew that at a moment's notice that could easily become seven. "If we can keep the heads off, we might be okay, but fire is best!"

The hydra's three remaining heads hissed in rage. The stumps closed off as the hydra's incredible regenerative powers prepared to sprout replacements for each (+5hp Hydra), while the three lunged. Giles dodged the first, but he only barely avoided the second which had decided to divert after him (-7dmg Giles 19/36). The last struck at Kyrie, though Frodrick rammed the haft of his axe into the side of its head when it tried.

The monster had learned to be wary of this prey, but was not about to back down. The serpentine body beneath the surface of the water coiled back, inviting its prey to chase it into the river.

Frodrick didn't need convincing. He waded into the river on Jargon's back, slipping his left arm into his shield straps as he moved. "Kyrie, aim for the one on the right!" Frodrick swung his axe to distract the head, but it ignored him, focused single-mindedly on Kyrie.

Kyrie splashed into the shallow, murky water, fending off an opportunistic shot as she waded in. She drew back her shovel, aiming for the neck that Frodrick had indicated. A second head diverted at her and shoved her off-balance, snapping at her (-7dmg Kyrie)

Zeran moved around the wagon, keeping enough distance from the hydra that it didn't get any funny ideas about him again. He was pretty sure the head that wanted him specifically hadn't bit the dust yet, but he wasn't keeping track. He moved for the edge of the water and took a shot. The ball struck between two armoured scales and wounded one of the necks (-3dmg Hydra).

While Miguel worked to light his torch from the tinderbox, Stefan drew another arrow and shot again, this time striking home (-3dmg Hydra).

Finally done collecting the torch, Miguel leapt out of the wagon, only to groan as he saw the monster trying to retreat into the river. This was not going to work very well if he couldn't keep the torch lit.

Giles hopped down out of the wagon, drawing his long sword. "Bring fire! Cut off the heads and cauterize the stump! They'll only grow back if you don't!" He willed up a protective aura around himself as he began chanting his spell. Without giving the hydra an openning to bite him while he was casting, he used his magic to set his sword on fire. Hopefully the wetland terrain would burn less easily than yesterday's mishap.

The hydra, with the overconfidence of a predator who believes it has ambushed easy prey, divided each of its heads among the party, biting off way more than it could chew. Kyrie and Frodrick, despite their unreadiness, took nothing more than glancing blows and a few extra scrapes on their armour. The others however, didn't have such an easy time.

Miguel and Giles dodged by inches, but Zeran came again to such a narrow miss he was ready to fall out of the cart to get away from the serpentine maw chasing him (-4dmg Miguel) (-5dmg Giles) (-11dmg Zeran 14/36).

Frodrick took his axe in hand, bellowing, "Hell or high water!" Jargon reared up on her hind legs and Frodrick swung his axe at one of the hydra's many heads. The head dodged back, then immediately lunged again, biting Frodrick's arm (-4dmg Frodrick), not penetrating his armour.

Kyrie leapt from the wagon, her trusty shovel in hand. Another of the hydra's heads, reacting fast, took advantage of her manoeuvring and lashed out at her even as the other was chewing on Frodrick. Without missing a beat, Kyrie side-stepped the sudden lunge and thrust the blade of her shovel hard down on its neck (-6dmg Head A).

Despite its role as an iconic blunt weapon, the shovel served equally well as any headsman's axe at severing the hydra's head from its body (-5dmg Hydra). The decapitated stalk dropped to the river bank and flopped about for a moment, but quickly stopped. For the part of the stump, it rocked back with a spasm, then simply fell limp beside the head.

Zeran leapt out of the wagon—on the opposite side from the others. The last thing he wanted right now was to be closer to the monster that was so eager to eat him. He drew his pistol and reloaded it, keeping a low profile on the far side of the wagon.

Miguel, heeding Giles' advice, quickly searched the wagon for a torch and some means of lighting it. While he looked, he sucked in his breath and began to sing, hoping the hydra wasn't noticing his distraction.

Stefan drew his bow and kept his distance. He loosed an arrow at the hydra, but the shot bounced off its thick scales.

(You may be asking, wait, why did the hydra get an attack of opportunity on both Kyrie and Frodrick in the same round? Or maybe you don't actually care, or have assumed there is probably a good reason. Well, there is. Hyrda has the Combat Reflexes feat, which gives it extra AoO equal to its Dex mod. So there.)

Exploration & Mapping

Hexes: H1

Directly contravening the dryad's advice to stay far away from the lair of the Dancing Lady, the next morning the party set out to explore the section of the forest where they knew the ancient ruin lay. Making sure to steer clear of any section of the forest that was still on fire to the southeast, they traveled up along the swampy banks of the shallow Murque river.

(5 Lamashan)
Though the silty, algae-covered Murque was only about 100' across on average, it was surrounded on either side by fenland and shallow pools to twice that width. The party navigated this terrain carefully as they went about their mapping duties to avoid becoming mired in the soggy ground.

They kept their eyes alert for any sign of danger from the forest, wary for any sign of the dangerous fey or her lair, but they didn't count on danger from the water.

Despite its shallow depth, the murkiness of the appropriately named Murque river hid its own dangers. Without hardly so much as a ripple along the surface, five massive snake-like heads erupted from the water at once, each some 15' long.

The heads lunged in unison, each large serpentine maw targeting one of the party. Frodrick and Kyrie both nearly avoided the attacks, but not even their strong armour enabled them to escape harm (-6dmg Frodrick) (-7dmg Kyrie). Miguel, Giles, and Zeran, deprived the chance to move, were forced to rely on skin-of-their-teeth reflex to avoid being nearly swallowed whole (-4dmg Miguel) (-5dmg Giles) (-11dmg Zeran).

Stefan flinched as he saw the others being attacked, watching with horror for a sixth head with his name on it... but none ever came.

Giles stepped forward, clearing his throat. "We are grateful for these gifts you have bestowed upon us, and we are more than happy to have done this favor for you—and not to have offended you with out 'little fire'," he nudged Zeran at this point, "but I must ask if you came upon any information while we were away."

Tiressia did not betray the slightest waver at Giles' request, but her expression became stiff, almost pained. "I am sorry for this deception, but I must urge you: do not go near the lair of the Dancing Lady."

Giles remained stoic. "My apologies, but I must insist. The chances of us coming upon this lair ourselves in our mapping endeavours is very high, and if you do fear for us going there would it not be better for us to know where it is so we may be prepaired for whatever may be there? If I may inquire what is your concern with us venturing into the 'lair of the dancing lady'?"

Tiressia nodded her understanding sombrely. "The place you seek lies to the southwest, almost at the edge of my influence. It has stood in this forest for longer than anyone can remember. Most recently it has come to be inhabited by a dark fey spoken of only as the Dancing Lady. Mortals who travel the forest have since learned to steer clear of her and her cohort, lest they too disappear."

Zeran threw in his voice. "What manner of fey is this 'Dancing Lady' exactly, and what is her cohort? ...and how much fire do you think we'd need to take her down, since I seem to be so good at that?" The latter he asked with a suggestive eyebrow waggle.

The dryad did not seem amused. "That keep has withstood the test of millenia in this forest. I urge you to take this danger seriously and do not seek to disturb her. Even the wicked fey she has attracted to her service fear her wrath. There is nothing more I am able to discover about her identity."

Zeran tapped his chin with his finger, turning to the others. "Well, your call guys. Let the dancing bitch be, or do we go be stupid?"

Giles sighed and rubbed his head, muttering something about there being 'a time and a place, Zeran'.

The gunslinger chuckled and turned back to the dryad, tipping his hat. "Thank you, and although I am joking and such, I - we, take this threat seriously. If she is preying on people, though we might have to deal with her eventually."

Tiressia inclined her head in kind. "I trust that your companions and you shall do what you think is best. And I trust our cousin to do her best to keep you safe."

Giles thanked Tiressia once more, then the party bid farewell.

As soon as they were well away from the dryad's grove, Giles took out his share of the meal-sized berries and inspected it. After a moment, he flicked it into the air and tried to catch it in his mouth.

He missed the first time, but caught the berry. Zeran immediately laughed and followed suit, tossing his berry into the air. Miguel also joined in, striking himself square in the eye with his berry. By their second tries, both Zeran and Miguel were laughing and actively competing to be the first to succeed.

Frodrick grumbled something affectionate and grandfatherly while taking out his own berry. He decided he wasn't feeling much for it and leaned forward in the saddle and fed it to Jargon (+1hp Hooves 27/34).

At first Kyrie hardly noticed the foolery, lost in her own thoughts. An overly silly miss broke her reverie with Zeran bumping into her while chasing his berry.

It was already getting dark, so the group made camp shortly after leaving Tiressia's grove. Before setting up a watch and turning in for the night, the party held a quick discussion to decide what to do about their current mission. They reached an agreement that, at the very least, now that they were aware of what kind of dangers lay within the keep, they could take a look around.

Travelling G2
(Evening Same Day)

It was getting late in the day by the time they made it back to the grove of Tiressia the dryad. Urgency to escape the potential wildfire fuelled their flight, but now all that was gone. The party was beginning to grow tired.

At the moment of their arrival at the edge of the small grove, Tiressia stepped out of the oak tree to greet them. The effect was both eerie and strangely fascinating to behold. At the point where the dryad's skin and the tree's bark met, the two seemed to blend seamlessly. Once again Falchos was nowhere to be seen, though no doubt he was not far off.

"My bold adventurers, the forest whispers of your victory in the treetops and along the roots. And the resulting after effects thereof." Tiressia was smiling, but Zeran felt a weight on his mind.

"Yeah, about that," he said. "We found your evil tree and killed it. I set it on fire but, well things got out of hand. If you have the means, it might be prudent to check on it and put out the few embers that we couldn't reach. I'd gladly tag along to help as best I can, given it was my accident that caused it."

Tiressia chuckled. "The 'few embers' you left an hour ago have grown into a sizeable blaze by now—you can see the smoke from the treetops from here. It has gone well beyond my ability to combat, even if I could travel that far from my tree."

Tiressia approached Zeran. From this close he realized that the dryad was actually close to six foot tall. She placed a hand on his shoulder. "Fear not, however. While I had hoped to have that monstous creature removed with minimal damage, I think we will find soon enough that a good fire will serve to cleanse the area of the creature's taint, and bring the opportunity for regrowth to that area.

"A blaze of this size should burn itself out within a few days. In the meantime, should it turn north I can call on the spirits to protect this grove with my modest druidry."

Tiressia turned to address the whole party. "Now, I believe I promised you all a reward for your assistance." She crossed the grove back to her tree and scooped up a small bundle tied together with twine.

She gave the bundle to Kyrie—what looked like a roll of parchment, a twig, and a half dozen feathers. "I bestow this magic on your company. Each of these items are invested with beneficial enchantments.

"The potions and the wand can heal your injuries, and the scroll contains a summoning spell. The feather tokens are all capable of growing into a new tree when activated, and these," the dryad made Kyrie hold her hand palm-up to receive a handful of berries, "I have imbued with magic that will provide each of you with a full meal."

"Furthermore, as a fitting service to the heroes who saved my home from destruction, I will do what I am able to protect your home. While I am no warrior, and I may not be able to travel far from my oak, I will ensure that your people are made aware of any threat which crosses my domain."

As indicatecd by the loot-o-meter just above, Tiressia's promise toward the end there actually entails a bonus to our Stability checks, which is handy and practical! Anyway, *ahem* if there is no further matters to deal with here, we should probably pick a new area of the forest to begin exploring next. *cough*)

Giles swung his sword for the place where the trunk split into multiple branches. He cut deep enough into the wood to leave a mark, but the real telling blow came from the flames on his sword. He left blackened char marks on the bark and the three shuddered, roaring in pain (-7dmg -9fire Tree Bloodied).

Frodrick bellowed back at the tree and gave it what-for. He swung his axe at the side of the tree's scarred opening, splintering the wood around its mouth (-11dmg Tree). The tree's upper branches were beginning to sway hazardously as it moved.

Zeran strafed along the outside of the clearing. "Yo! Stefan! Give me a little space! I've got something!" He shouted.

Stefan called over his shoulder. "A'ight, boss!" He swung his axe, scoring a shallow mark, then guided Uriel with his knees to make a tactical step back.

As soon as his opening was secure, Zeran lobbed the flask in his hand. He aimed for the back half of the tree, opposite where the rest of the party was standing. The flask struck off a branch and shattered, splashing the fluid inside all over. Upon contact with the air the contents burst into flame, igniting the tree (-7fire Tree Badly Wounded).

The tree trembled and roared. It rocked to the point that the party thought it must be about to come down. It pounded on Giles twice more. The first he avoided through Frodrick's help, but the second forced him back or be skewered (-7dmg Giles).

At the same time the tree was attacking Giles, it leaned violent over in the direction of Zeran. Previously believing he was safely out of the reach of the tree's scythe-like branches, he suddenly found himself all too close for comfort. He ducked the tree's attack be mere inches (-12dmg Zeran), putting the fear of vegetables back in him.

The tree's thick, dark root-like legs creaked and began to carry the monster a step away. Still aflame, the creature didn't seem to appreciate this much of a fight from its victims. Between the fire and the multiple sap-oozing wounds, it had clearly bit off more than it could chew with this group.

Miguel followed without hesitation. He charged his sword and cleaved another scar into the bark (-10dmg Tree Near Death). Kyrie was right behind him. No weed escaped her grasp and she was not about to let that change now just because the weed was three times taller than her and on fire.

Kyrie thrust her shovel into the tree's bark (-12dmg Tree). The tree seemed to stumble. More directly, its dozen root-like feet flailed uselessly, rapidly losing stability. The scythe tree swayed, then leaned, then finally came crashing to the ground (Dying).

The fire oil still clinging to its branches burned up, but by now there was enough dry fuel around to keep the flame going independant of the alchemical mixture that sparked it. The tree continued to burn (-5fire), while lighting fire to the yellowing leaves around the hollow.

Scythe Tree: Unconscious, Dying, Power Attack, Lunge*

(With Lunge a creature is able to trade off a penalty to AC to increase its reach for a round. Normally this tree monster uses this to reach its prey on the first round from 20' away, but instead we shot it while it was playing dumb, so it went straight into attack mode.)

Frodrick unfastened his cloak and threw it on the felled tree monster. If it weren't a matter of personal safety, he would let the tree burn until there was nothing left but ash, but it so happened there was an entire autumn forest of fuel waiting to be exploited out there.

The tree monster smouldered under the cloak, but the overly dense canopy in this area was not inclined to wait for them. The few embers that had drifted up there were quickly setting another emergency situation in the treetops.

"A'right, everyone get to the wagon! That be a crown fire there. We're gettin' outta here." Frodrick called.

He took his cloak back from the scythe log. It was liable to reignite at this rate, but now was not the time to be sticking around. The trees in this area were dense and sickly. Much of it was kindling waiting to happen.

The party took off north, back to Tiressia's grove.

Giles took advantage of the tree's distraction while it attacked Jargon to incant a spell that wreathed his sword with flames.

Despite the tree's lack of eyes, the crackle of the flaming sword seemed to strike a nerve. Frodrick realized he would soon have his hands full with defending the soldier. He turned and leapt up into Jargon's saddle where he would have an altitude advantage blocking branches. "Oi! Look over here, you overgrown weed! I got enough axe for a bit o' lumber as ye!"

The tree was not visibly impressed by Frodrick's taunts. Zeran realized he might need some more traditional tools for this deforestation. He turned and ran for the wagon, still parked at the edge of the clearing. He whispered soothing words to the nervous horses as he passed. Out of the assorted equipment and loot stashed on the vehicle he pulled a small flask of fire oil.

The tree swung at Giles with its sharp branches. He ducked the first and Frodrick threw his shield in front of another. A third branch thrusting down remained dedicated to Kyrie. It was a lucky strike; the paladin only managed to block it at the last moment with her shovel, earning her a shallow nick on the tool's wooden handle (-16dmg Kyrie (19/45).

Miguel took the opening and shifted into position to attack beside Kyrie. He mentally charged his sword with energy and swung a heavy chop at the nearest branch. He managed to score a glancing cut, but with his three-times magically enforced strength, he left a decent mark on the bark (-7dmg Tree).

Kyrie recovered from the blow quickly. She thrust the blade of her shovel down toward the tree's trunk. She struck hard, more like an axe than a tool for digging (-11dmg Tree). With every blow the tree was starting to show its injuries (Injured), but Kyrie was only just getting started (+14hp Kyrie).
