Yeah, I wasn't paying very much attention when I pulled 'elven' out of that ^^

Anyway, yeah, even better than doing a quick description here would be to write up a real description for in-game. From this new vantage of enlightenement, it looks like we actually have five humans, a sixth who refers to himself as the most unique being in centuries, but I don't know if that necessarily means not human, and a horse.

Alright, let's get this show on the road! Or rather, wait for our DM to start the engine down the campaign railroad. ^^

That's the spirit, Baron.

Though I must confess, I don't know what good armour made from stiff rags and rusty spoons for weapons would do us, but just maybe the little buggers will have something of use, like a belt that transforms its wearer into living metal when they are in the air (Goblins: Life Through Their Eyes reference).

Oh, and since no one answered Loki's question earlier, meat and sarcasm reference, I'll give you a hint: He once vowed to give these two things up, which would have left him with nothing else in the world.

Oh, yeah, and to avoid stupid mistakes like the one I made earlier ^^ Perhaps everyone could give a rudimentary description of their characters (or even more detailed, if they so desire) here, so we stand a better chance of remembering who everyone is.

Matthias - human, brown mane, brown eyes, strong build. Wears red tunic and black leggings, carries a bastard sword and a shield with a lion on it, currently owns scale mail. Mid-twenties.

I accidentally threw a post into the game thread while trying to write one up. I swiftly slew the misbegotten vestige before it had a chance to do too much damage.

Subject: He speaks, too! Though perhaps you were expecting a roar?

The elv-- not elven blademaster replied to the nautical engineer’s terms, expressing doubt in the goblins’ manners and respect for property laws. Matthias, in the meantime, couldn’t help feeling some of the levity he had felt in approaching disappear. Surely there were places he was more needed than to clean out some one’s estate of some unwanted tenants? Perhaps there was an element that he wasn’t seeing? There were always factors in a situation that weren’t immediately known.

Matthias considered his decision. He had been certain that he had been Shown the way to this stall, but one had to consider that not every suspicious combination of events was necessarily a Sign. If the goblins had invaded a few days ago, where was this man staying? If he had secondary dwellings in the city, Matthias was disinclined to help him, though considering the standard set by the other men and women vying for the attention of a handful of adventurers, the condition of this stand indicated that this man was either in real trouble, or much more clever than his fellows.

The knight had evidently decided that the condition of leaving the items in the estate untouched unacceptable, given the renowned motor control of the aforementioned guests. He turned to leave, but then the man with the horse spoke up.

“I'm willing to help but it would be suicide for me to go alone. Gold and possessions mean little to me, all I would ask for is if you could provide a bed for a night and food, lodgings for my pony as well.
“If you trust us to not damage or steal anything then we can come to some agreement, otherwise you might end up without a home tonight.”

The knight had a change of heart, deciding to commit himself to the engineer’s quest. “Though I must say that you got an awful lot of fire power to fight one band of goblins are you sure that you need all of us? Or is there something else there your not telling us about?"

“I am happy to do this. I trust this man and any of you guys got anything better to do let’s help this poor man and potentially make some money,”
said the man standing in the back next to Matthias. He arrived at his conclusion and stepped forward. “I didn’t get a chance to properly introduce myself earlier.” He bowed his head toward Thomas, “I’m Matthias, a warrior of the Lion. Like my fellows I am happy to help you, though perhaps I can offer a suggestion? I would suggest that we give you our word not to thieve your belongings. Let the dishonest who would take advantage of your position shirk from the call, and seek their prey elsewhere.”

(Here's hoping I don't spend the entire adventure playing as the catch-up post)

Allow me to be (one of?) the first to welcome you here to the Inn. We always love to welcome fresh me- young Innmates to the Inn.

From the looks of it I don't see many people from the usual welcoming party online right now, but don't let that discourage you! We have had many new players extol the friendly atmosphere here at the Inn.

Since I am to be your first guide, I suppose I should dispense the primary warnings: Do not feed the Grugg--you might never be the same again. I mentioned before that most of the Innmates are very friendly. Eol should be along sooner or later for face-licks, assuming Merideth doesn't arrive first to put a leash on him. (Oh, and watch out for Meri, too, she has been advocating feeding the Grugg--don't listen to her insideous words (Hi Meri! ))

Anyway, come in and enjoy yourself. I encourage you to tell us about yourself.

EDIT: Ninja'd be the very one herself: Hi Meri!

Topic: Probably can't be done, but...
Subject: Greetings

First of all, hello Wolf (or Raven, as the case may be). I don't think I've said hello before, but I've seen you around.

Introductions over, I can echo your plaintive cry ("Probably can't be done,") with a group of people that was originally a race, but then seemed more like class, and then shifted into a grey area, of mine. I suppose this just proves that Shapeshifters are one of humanity's more common fascinations.

My 'group of people' that I wanted to bring into D&D (let's call them the Asura for now, since that's what I used to call them) have the ability to transform into a single animal (the idea is that it is their 'spirit animal') based on what kind of person they were. Originally they were going to be a race that were essentially natural lycanthropes minus DR, curse, and alignment tendencies, but then I fell into and decided that I liked the idea of regular people being able to acquire these powers. Right now they sit in a grey area without even a name while I clarify a few things with them. Well, that's my story.

As for your Animagi, I don't have a whole lot of advice built up from my time hitting the Asuras with wrenches. Given that druids have to wait 5 levels before gaining the power to change into one of any animal for a few hours, a race that allows you to turn into an animal at any time would give them a serious advantage. Perhaps they begin with relatively low shifting power and build it up as they level up (which then makes it seem more like a class).

One way you could do things is by making Animagus a template that you can apply to humanoids that give them steadily increasing abilities to change their form the way Half-Celestials gain spell-like abilities (though again, we're talking a high level adjustment here). Come to think of it, the difference between the template and the race ideas is only that one involves multitudes of base creatures... so maybe scratch that, unless you think you like it.

If you have a way to access a Monster Manual II (3.5), I'd look up the Grimalkin. They are a small-sized cat-like creature that can assume the form of a medium-or-smaller animal (or a few other types, with errata eliminating humanoid forms, I think). Perhaps this could give you a few insights.

Anyway, to me, it sounds like a specially flavoured Druid-y class that focuses on minor shapeshifting, growing into more powerful forms (and perhaps bonuses to those forms' physical abilities so that the class isn't stuck with the Str of a CR 2 creature when at 20th level) sounds like the way to go, if indeed it can be done. They'd probably loose most if not all of their magical ability to not overpower the Druid class. Another thing to look into (if you haven't)
would be the Master of Many Forms (I forget which book, I think it's in the Complete Adventurer or Complete Warrior books) which gives a Druid the ability to focus on a much large cache of formes.

Oh yeah, and I remember seeing somewhere another PrC that gave a character with a high enough BAB (+7 I think) and who is primitive-orieted enough the ability to take on a single primitive-ish animal (DM's discretion: Dinosaur, Dire animal) into which it can 'Wild Shape' a couple times/day, but who can add the animal's scores onto their own (i.e., if they choose a beastie with 15 Str, they get +4 Str, which is good since the class is aimed at characters with already good psycial stats who wouldn't be happy about loosing a 16 Str to shift). The class focused on those who 'harkened back to their baser, more primitive and wilder sides' which gave them the ability to get hairy.

Anyway, I have probably timed out of the inn by now, but those are my thoughts. Good luck making your Animagi!

As Almerin could tell you, I am set up to be fully busy with what I have currently. If I weren't, however, I'd first join Almerin's game, then come over here. From the things you require from your players (most specifically in the 'realistic' requisite) I expect this would be the kind of game I would enjoy.

Topic: Forgotten Kings
Subject: The Lion Rampant Guardant

Matthias Swan began the day at one end of the Road and steadily worked his way through the forest of flashy stands advertizing their needs. “Glory! Gold! Greatness! The Heirloom Chalice of Cromwell has been stolen and . . . ” Mattes moved on. A Servant of the Lion takes on every cause worthy of his or her ability, however not every cause is a worthy one. There would be other adventurers to pass this way—many others, in fact, and sooner or later the Chalice of Cromwell, the goblins who raided the Drakes’ country home, and the untold fortunes of the ancient King of where-ever would be seen to in their due time.

About midday Matthias took a seat outside an enterprising drinking den owned by a man who saw the potential demand for refreshment by adventurers travelling the Road looking for fame or fortune. He downed his water in one shot, leaned back in his chair, and closed his eyes, still over stimulated from the myriad of colours demanding attention.

In a sudden flurry of motion, a halfing—no, too tall; a human wearing too-large clothes—broke past Mattes’ table. He made it a few more metres before he slammed into the ground. Matthias started to get up to assist him, but the man was up faster, and running again. He didn’t appear to be running away from anything, so Matthias followed his course to his destination: a small, hastily made stand stuck out from the rest, near the far end of the street, advertizing only “Help Wanted”. He glanced up at the heavens and smiled. The Way is always shown to those who watch.

Matthias joined the crowd—a elven blademaster wearing a chainshirt, a fellow with the sizing gaze of a fighter, a man with a pony dressed in blue, (and two other individuals, one of which I’m assuming is human, another whom I’m more doubtful about)—just as the large man watching the stall left. He was of average height, wore his brown hair to the shoulder with a short beard full-beard, in a red tunic and black leggings. Swan wore a large, half-and-a-half sword at his left and carried his shield, bearing a lion risen on it’s hind legs and looking at the viewer, over his shoulder on a guige strap.

“I have a slight problem,” the scrawny man said. One of the people standing before him responded first. “What’s the problem and the compensation?” Matthias waited for the answer, his curiosity piqued at the refreshing plainness after a full morning of recurring flashes of uniqueness.

(If anyone's curious, 'lion rampant guardant' is the description of Mattes' shield- literally a lion standing in profile on its hindlegs with its head turned to face outward. Now to lunch.)

Topic: The Day They Woke Up on the Wrong Side of Reality
Subject: How do you kill a giant, demonic Dog? Carefully.

Morning-on
Someday, June 25, some-year (5th Day)
Surton, Gaellus

It wasn’t an ideal set up by any one’s standards, but without intimate foreknowledge of the future, it was the best solution. There was some disagreement and even some cheap-shot name calling, but in the end Raymond and I boarded the northbound cart.

Before I left, I threw in my own thoughts in the planning to the mayor. “If this monster actually is a demon,” Admittedly, I also made the assumption that the farmers didn’t necessarily know the difference, though unlike Beauregard, I didn’t make the mistake of assuming the monster mundane, “it probably won’t need to sleep, so there’s no point in trying to sneak up on it during the day.” I considered it wise not to mention that it neither needed to eat nor drink, and that it was probably only devouring livestock—and woodsmen—out of the sheer visceral joy of desecrating the bodies, and besides that, I wasn’t sure how much abnormality these people were prepared for. “Also, keep fire handy. If it doesn’t scare it away, you might at least have the chance to burn it.”

After a few hours on the road, I realized how poorly I slept the previous night. Sitting off the back of the cart, I slouched down and fell asleep sitting up, waking whenever the familiar jostling of the cart jerked too far.

Before the cart had even escaped the boundaries of the small town, messengers were dispatched to the outlying farmsteads with warning and instructions to barricade themselves in if they couldn’t (or didn’t want to) come in to town. Throughout the day, people busied themselves to prepare for the evening. While several volunteers worked to clear the main room in the church for refugees, Brother Harrison took a few lads and a set of hatchets and went to replenish the stocks. Not so far away at Town Hall, families were already transferring items for the evening, where the mayor, the hunters, and a group of people who expressed an interest in slaying the beast—six men and two women in all.

The decision to hold off the hunt until the following evening, when the other two hunters would return, was not well received, but none chose to challenge it. Weapons were discussed, pitchforks were at ready availability and one of the women had her late husband’s sword and shield to use. Needless to say, as this was the growing makings of a monster-hunting mob, plans were made to have torches to go with their pitchforks. The chance of being attacked in the town and having to go out to find and kill the Demon Dog were weighed, with the decision being made to spend the next day exploring a few locations that it could be lairing if it didn’t show signs of wanting to invade the town tonight. Much discussion happened about attack strategies, but it wasn’t long before the mob turned to the hunters for their expertise in the matter. (Feel free to shoot e-mails at each other and make a post if you feel so inclined.)

About 7 o’ the bell
Corazon, Gaellus

The cart passed through the southern gates unmolested, and dropped the three of us (counting familiar) off at the Cat’s Cradle. There we bumped into Gamet, who greeted us in the common room over a glass of something dark, probably beer or ale or some other word for alcoholic beverage. After supper (4 sp) we navigated our way back to the armourer’s and bought Ben an undecorated red kite shield. Neither of us could remember whether Ben had wanted a steel or wooden shield, but when we saw the prices, we ultimately opted for the more economic choice, writing out a U.O.Us for seven gold nobles for the large wooden shield.

Late-evening
Surton, Gaellus

With somewhere over an hour an a half of sunlight left, all families travelling from the farms had settled into the church and town hall, and those families living in town were beginning to finalize their move to gather. Messengers were dispatched to make sure those families who had elected to remain in their homes were prepared. There wasn’t enough time to send more than two messages to the farms, first about the problem, and then double-checking that anyone who remained were committed and were safe.

(Alright, now I don’t want anyone going ahead and saying ‘I told you so’ when their guess is proven right XD. If the defenders have any plans they want to suggest for defending the town, discuss and post. Ray and I don’t have much to do, though there is room for suggestions for the evening, as well as roleplaying banter.)

Topic: The Day They Woke Up on the Wrong Side of Reality
Subject: All those in favour of leaving to brb. All those against. All those in favour of splitting.

My mind had been swayed toward leaving—we would be back within the next two days (one day if we found horses). It didn’t seem unreasonable that the monster would stick to sheep for just long enough for us to show up and see what we could make of it, if anything. But even then, we had no way of knowing that the town would be safe, a possibility that Jeremy voiced.

“Okay, so let’s see what we have here,” I said. “On one hand, the cart leaves in about ten-fifteen minutes for Corazon. If we don’t go with it, they will be without protection against bandits, so if they are attacked, we fail the mission.” God, as if this world needed to be any more like a video game. It was a little creepy. “Though as for that, the drivers have dropped off their cargo and carry only little with them, and on top of that, they have made it clear that they consider returning to town unguarded to be an acceptable risk compared to another night here, irrational fear or not as it may be.

“Galen thinks that the cart might have a chance of attracting this Demon Dog, due to being a smaller target, though we only know about this thing hunting at night. If it is a real demon, though, this monster won’t actually need to sleep, but I don’t know how well we can rely on that train of though—after all, who knows the real difference between a werewolf and an outsider from a distance anyway?.

“Then, of course, we have to consider whether or not the monster has acquired a taste for human meat. It has been in this area for about two weeks, supposedly, and has centred on the town in the last few days. The townspeople have the advantage of numbers and barricades.

“Really, it comes down to whether it is more likely that the cart or the town will need defending more. If we could use magic to see the future, we could guess who would be attacked and need our help more, but I can’t even do an Augury.” I glanced at the mayor and the cart drivers and smiled.

“Another thing to think about: Should we split up, sending half to guard the guard with half remaining just in case things go wrong here? That way we could make sure the cart is safe and we could make sure the town is well defended until we’re all back together. The problem with this plan is that we don’t know if half of us will be enough to do anything in either case.”

“Oh yeah, and we have a time limit for Ben and Ray, in case this problem takes us a while.”

(This is me saying “I don’t know what we should do: let’s think about it”. I’m not sitting on the fence just because I know what’s going to happen and don’t want to influence you. I actually don’t know which sounds like a better idea given all the variables we don’t know. If we stay there could trouble, if we go there could be double.)

Heh, nice touch. Not only does our sixth party member speak up for the first time in some 5 odd pages, but he brings with him some topics for debate. I can't even do an update XD.

It should be noted, as you may see attached to the main thread, that I am still out of comission. Have fun debating. Both of you have good points that hinges on the question of whether or not we can reasonably expect the poochie to start preying on the town and whether or not they can protect themselves if it does.

Things that may help your debates: The poochie has given the semblance of getting closer to the town recently. The cart will be defenseless to any attack (and also lacks an obvious excess of supplies, which might cause potential bandits to ignore it, but again, there is no way of knowing the future of that). Sounds like you guys could really use a diviner.

(Don't look at me, I don't even have second level spells yet, much less the power to say "Thus it shall be.")

This is just a shout out to all my DMs, GMs, Chroniclers, Players, and even Co-players that I shall be once again descending into the multifarious depths of essay writing (as always, that's plural on the essay--sometimes I think professors have a twisted sense of humour). I could say that you know who you are, but in case you don't:

AoD: The Linsemptus
AoD: The Clock Tower
AoD: The Aria of the Thirteen (though I suppose this one doesn't count)
The Day They Woke Up on the Wrong Side of Reality
Dying of the Light
FR: The Unsung Heroes (maybe?)

And the rest of the games that persist to dwell on my User Profile without any evidence of their existence or acknowledgment of their disappearance.

I probably will be back periodically, but until I am actually back, I only have a small chance to update anything. (Now let's see if this thread sits on the Last Updated long enough for some one I know to actually notice it and keep it alive)

P.S. Even while I'm away you may continue to alleviate your stress by chanting 'Owm' since 'Eol' simply doesn't flow so well.
