Topic: Forgotten Realms: The Unsung Heroes
Subject: Insulting the kobolds who probably aren't here anyway.

"Mind your sheath." She murmured to Dylan, "I know a couple of thieves that ended up in a pretty sorry state, simply because they gave themselves away by letting their dagger sheaths at their ankles hit the furniture they were sneaking by."

Dylan looked conspicuously at the offending sheath which was partially covered by the peculiar arrangement of his cloak. With his free hand he grabbed his belt and tried to adjust it to little effect. “I’ll have you know I once killed a thief because of this errant article you now see secured to my belt. I was at a party, and I decided to venture upstairs to enjoy the view of the sea from an upper level window. I must have kept the burglar waiting a good ten minutes, but as I looked out into the moonlit night, I had the idea to compose a song, and so I went for my bow, but as I drew it, the tail end dislodged a vase from the table next to me. The combination of the tension of hanging for so long with the calamitous crash must have been too much for his poor nerves. If you think about it, I probably saved that broken vase from the greedy fingers of that kleptomaniac, but I doubted the owner of the manor would see it that way, so while the would-be thief interrupted the party with his cry, I left for home early.”

(I suppose somewhere between here and actually starting into the mines full force, Linnix moves up to be with Aelistae. Probably just after the sudden slope in tunnel.)

The expedition was very softly accompanied by cheerful curses from Dylan about the mental state of a person who digs such tunnels and the pleasant aroma they left behind while he kept a casual watch on the tunnel behind him. When the scratching and squeaking erupted, Dylan whirled around to point the light back up the tunnel, his immediate instinct screaming for him to hastily return to the world of the sane above. Whether due to the strength of his will or paralyzing fear, he remained frozen until the sound finally died away.

“You know,” Dylan whispered, “another term for Kobolds is ‘knockers’. I heard it comes from their tendency to tunnel parallel to a mine and scare religion into the poor workers by making all kinds of sounds from the other side. Is it just me, or weren’t the kobolds supposed to be the other way from the keep?” The procession slowly continued down to the lobby, hoping to pretend that such sounds never occurred.

As they entered the main lobby, Aelistae made some signal and Talus stopped in the doorway and refreshed his magical barrier. The warlock come cartographer turned to Dylan and began to sign to him in turn. Replying with a quick signal himself—that of his eyebrow ascending on his forehead—Dylan conveyed his confusion to the man, who adjusted to plainer hand-signs telling him to wait.

Aelistae journeyed into the room alone while Talus remained vigilant for the possibility of ambush. Dylan offered his contribution by watching for a rear-attack, as it was the direction from which he was personally most concerned about an attack coming. As he alternately watched for a sneak attack and checked the near side of the room, Dylan contemplated the possibility that there were indeed ‘knockers’ shuffling through these tunnels as well as trogs and gobs. “Ariwuxghorospetisse kosj ternesj nurh*” He spoke under his breath so as not to actually attract the attention of any draconic speakers.

*A disparaging comment about kobold ancestors translating roughly to: ‘your before-kobolds were tiny ugly stones.’

Admittedly I was just making note of it XD I hadn't actually checking your math (all I saw was x2 x3 x4 and stopped by to check). This looks like one heck of a beast to mess with. I can hardly wait for Grugg to come back with something to challenge him. The next thing to do is to pick up a monster out of the epic level handbook and go head to head.
The whole deal with wielding the lance out of the mouth was an interesting image.

I hope you meant Intelligence or Wisdom damage: Charisma is going to take a decent while to knock him off his high horse (pun unintentionally intended).

Paralyzing him would work nicely as well, if you could find a way to do it to him without having to go through that fortitude save. Then you'd have to take out the Wu Jen without giving it chance to end polymorph so that it could cast spells on him that might fix him up.

Another thing though is that you would have to somehow acquire the first initiative place in order to even have a chance at magicking him.

By the way, I think there is a rule about multipiers that you might be missing here. I don't know what it is, but I remember reading that x2 multiplier stacked with x2 multiplier instead becomes a single x3 multiplier, not x4 as standard math would tell you.

Joy! Another Paladin! (I think).
This like, what, our fourth one?
Lessee.... There was that Aasimar Bard/Favoured Soul/(was there Paladin in there too?)
There was that other Paladin who was turned into a Tyrsicle, aaaannnd . . .
Of course, our only surviving, though inactive, Paladin Atharam.

Welcome. Your duties include feeding and walking the gnome, grooming the horses, bad-mouthing invaders, and holding the fort 'til we get back. No late-night parties.

Enjoy

(EDIT): Okay, not a Paladin, but you know, same basket of fruit.

Topic: The Day They Woke Up on the Wrong Side of Reality
Subject: The Morning After/Dawn of the Second Day (48 hours remaining); whatever you prefer.

Morning,
2nd Day after Arrival,
En route to Corazan, Capital of Gaellus

Galen awoke from sleep at his pre-programmed time—though maybe a little bit later due to fatigue, but who could say what time was with any degree of accuracy, anyway? He rose with a quiet salute of good morning from the teamster in charge of the transportation, who was grooming the two large black horses that pulled the carriage. Picking a quiet spot a little away from the sleeping forms, he began the ritual of his daily magic.

By the time Ray had gotten up and left camp on his own endeavours, I was about ready to wake up. With the sun casting a subtle peek through the trees above. The gently brightening forest woke me in one of the best ways that I could imagine at the time, slowly, and entirely refreshed. The morning temperature was pleasant, neither hot nor cool. The night hadn’t even been cold enough for dew to form, though nevertheless, my back was slightly damp. With a sigh that might have been a yawn, I stretched. I remembered with the mild stiffness why I loved to sleep on the floor so much, when I was younger. As I tried to sit up, and found my spine unwilling to comply without protest, I also remembered why it was best to be done in moderation.

I rolled over and sought a new method with which to rise, and spied the object that had been pillow. I picked it up and it changed function as I sat cross-legged and cracked it open in my lap, using it once more as the arcanabula it was.

After a decent fifteen minutes, my mind was well refreshed and ready to take on some new spells. I mostly kept what spells I still had floating around from yesterday, such as the Magic Missile, as I had come to think of it. I exchanged the marking spell for something of more practical use, Mending. In all, I only took about twenty minutes to refresh prepare my spell.

While I did that, Ben, Jeremy, and Ian steadily found consciousness and returned to the world of the awakened, as well as Aeth and Barig. Ruiel was left to sleep for a while longer as he had taken the watch just before Gamet. Lady Emerita herself didn’t emerge from the carriage right up until breakfast, a slice of cheese on two slices of dry-ish bread, was being served, by which time Ray had returned.

As for Ray’s adventure, he explored the surrounding area, keeping the camp and road within close enough distance that he could see one or the other at most times, or at least knew where it was in relation to his wandering point. His search for food, however, had proved mostly fruitless, in both senses of the word. At one point he came upon a bush sporting a number of tiny black berries, but couldn’t tell with the slightest hope of certainty whether they would be fit for human consumption (let me know if you have a dire urge to sample one).

Subject: The ever modest and fearless bard!

“Now this is what I’m talking about” Dylan said as he swung in to breakfast behind Bronwyn, late with a bowl of hot porridge in his hands. He annexed the seat next to the cook’s while pecking out a small handful of choice fruits from the bowl. Without need for much encouragement, Dylan dug into another one of the best meals he'd eaten for some long time. Of course, sticking around where people knew you had the tendency to bring good food your way.

“And this is a woman of many talents; she goes from fireballing monster off walls to cooking a hot breakfast without missing a beat.” He said as she retook her seat between Talus and himself. “It’s a good thing we’re going for a little outing this afternoon, else I may do nothing but eat and sing here, and then I wouldn’t be able to move after very long, and that would make you would be the ruin of me,” he joked with the farm girl mage.

Back in his personal quarters he spent a decent fifteen minutes attempting to settle the subtle orchestration of his violin and his new cloak in such a way that neither did the other injustice. Matters were solved with a flash of ingenuity as he allowed the cloak to hang mostly on one shoulder, with the other slightly slack such that his violin case was not inhibited by it. Satisfied, he stole a final look in the mirror and noted with some regret that his beard could use a trim, but there was certainly not the time for that by now. He took his sword onto his belt and joined Linnix on her cart (assuming she is bringing it even here?).

". . . . That’s where you shiny people come in. After fellin’ ogres and flyin’ witches, a few trogs and gobs shouldn’t be a problem. Now git on goin’ and give ‘em ‘ell for Ol’ Willy!”

Dylan glanced down into the cave, catching just the key points of ol’ Willy’s speech. Shiny people? he asked himself, I suppose it’s only to be expected, such folk spend their lives weighing worth by lustre—shiny is only natural to him. He reflected on the tight quarters and possibly unstable area. Perhaps it was for the best that Bronwyn’s fireballs were committed to parchment than into these tunnels for today. The poor girl was so pleasant, but too shy to join them of her own accord.

Dylan popped his head further into the cave for a just moment, and then stepped aside the entrance. “So who wants to go in first? Or shall we all walk four abreast?” he asked with a low jester’s bow. He took his rapier in his hand and waited for at least one or maybe two others to volunteer to lead the delving before entering himself. Once fully out of the light of day he armed himself. If the illumination of the tunnel is not provided for, Dylan will apologize and explain his sight impediment. “I can’t see a damn thing, guys.” Then he will raise his voice in a short sung incantation of light, casting Light on his right ring finger (unless, perhaps, some one would like to cast it first).

(and I have just noticed another tragic failure of my most recent level up. I seem to have one less 1st level spell than I should, which will be remedied as quickly as possible.)
(More OOC; I never noticed just how long Light lasts—anyone of us casting it gives a full hour of illumination.)

Subject: I have to say

This idea works beautifully. It really doesn't change XP costs in any significant way other than that you have a limit on how much you can get away with, and that you are able to use XP costs even just after leveling up (when the cost would normally drop you to the previous level).

I'm going to have to say that I like it. The only problem that could be possibly posed by this is that the high XP costs of some spells might eliminate a large portion of your pool, and be annoyingly unable to be cast again, but when looked at seriously, you're probably not going to get to the point where the XP cost of a spell is so high that your XP pool is mostly consumed by it--not to mention that the monsters you kill by the end of the battle will have put off the cost of the spell.

I guess the only other thing is that epic casters would like to have the limits of the pool expanded somewhat, as XP cost is one of the several things that are frequently used to balance an epic spell into the castable range.

I think it's good.

This one I'll pop up quickly here could hardly be called a major villain, but it was nevertheless a boss fight that struck me as rather enjoyable and memorable.

Were had just entered a room that had a small number of floor-to-ceiling bolts of electricity that roamed the room at random and a large, purple furred minotaur in the middle, with horns that curled around all the way once, and large draconic wings. It took flight and was struck (and unfazed) by one of the lightning bolts. We knew this would be interesting from then on. The monster, I found out later, was nothing stranger than a minotaur + blue half dragon template

Subject: Arcanaphobia – that’s what kind . . . actually, the term is Rhabdophobia apparently

Sunset of the Day of Arrival (about 9-10 pm)
En route to Corazon

(I know it’s a long post but you still have to read it all)

I leaned back and stretched, self conscious of the small leather bound book at my side. I would have to start second guessing myself every time I lifted a hand to weave a spell, not even a full day after I first learned how. The fire danced and crackled before me as I contemplated it.

”Two things a man never grows tired of, fire and falling water. Always the same yet always changing.” Crane-man told Tree-ear.*

Or at least something close to that, I thought.

Fire was also how they used to figure out who was a witch and who wasn’t, along with dunking them into the river. I gently reached out with my mind to touch the spells that rested in my consciousness. With just a moment of concentration, I could reach into one and I would immediately have the words on my tongue and the signs in my hand, ready to finish the last part of the casting that would unleash the pre-set pattern. Wasn’t magic supposed to be harder than this to master, though?

I glanced to Galen out of the corner of my eye. His hair was so long that my mom mistook him for his mother when we last saw him over last summer. I was more concerned with other thoughts, however. He didn’t have any spellbook, but he nevertheless could use magic. I knew the book was not a requirement to wield magic for everyone, but still I wondered what kind of caster he was. He certainly fit neither the religious miracle-worker nor the natural magic archetype.

I did a mental double take. Was I seriously straight-facedly contemplating the differences in casting styles? The small fire’s heat made my skin feel dry and over warm, so I backed away a bit. It was too hot anyway.

“May I ask you a question about religion?” Raymond asked Aeth.

Aeth glanced to Lady Emerita before he answered. “My knowledge is limited, but perhaps I might know the answer to what you seek.” The Lady had stopped packing up for the moment, listening to the conversation.

I was certain that every one of my friends was now recalling the dreams from that morning. Those voices . . . would it be possible that they were gods? The excitement of the day nearly made me forget about the dreams. Now that I reflected on them, I could remember with vivid clarity each dream. I followed the driver’s and Ben’s example and selected a comfortable look space of ground, but I didn’t lie down yet.

“My friends and I are strangers to this land, as you’ve no doubt guessed. The problem is, at least for me, that I can’t remember the land I came from. As such I would like to learn about this land, in hopes of finding the key to helping me rediscover my memory.” Aeth said nothing but merely glanced to Emerita again, leaving Ray to continue on his own. “I seem to remember something just vaguely, like a dream. In this dream, I heard two voices, one of a deep voiced man and the other of a woman. I know this sounds strange, but do you have any idea what this means?”

Aeth’s normally cool expression fell away to genuine puzzlement as he considered the question. “So you suspect that this dream you’ve had might have some connection to religion?” He turned to Lady Emerita again, inviting her opinion. After a second of consideration she spoke, “It is not unheard of in tales for individuals to be contacted by a higher power – or at the very least, to claim they did.” She added the last bit with a pensive look aside.

“Nevertheless, your question is what kind of entities these might be, correct? Whatever reason you have for asking, I will tell you what I think. Since you say that there were two voices, one male and one female, I believe that you may be referring to the Twins. If this memory of yours is related to divinity, then I think that you are describing, or at least remembering a description of Gemini.”

(Reralae informs me that it seems haven’t given you the name of this country, which I confidently assumed that I had. Anyway, I have recently renamed it (see Q & A) to be Gaellus, so go ahead and forget what it was before, if indeed you actually still remember it)

The geography lesson imparted on us was little more than what a few learned individuals could relate, who had not travelled far beyond its borders. They tell us that the road we are on will travel east along the coast for a while before turning south across the plains to Corazon. They also explain that they are travelling from a small town known as Miel near the border between Gaellus and its immediate north eastern neighbour, Melivedia. The remaining majority of the northern border of the kingdom was made up by the craggy coastline, which winds down to more hospitable shores as you move closer to the western coast. The southwest border divided Gaellus from the peninsula-and-islands kingdom Ioneos, and the southeast fell upon a small tract of coastline that touched on the Aedoric Sea. The east ran a series of borders between Ethea, Marsagos, and Genadis, in ascending order ending with Melivedia to the north. Some short, sailable distance off the north coast lays the island kingdom Thosana, and for good measure, Emerita gave the name of Ioneos’ largest island, Arcene. There were a few countries to the east of Ethea, Marsagos and Genadis, but Aeth declared that listing their names without giving us an idea where they lay would be of relatively little use to us. (Just remember that you’re in Gaellus for now, everything else is bonus points)

Our hosts continued the lesson with some topographic information. They explained that the northeast of Gaellus was mostly covered in forests, as was Melivedia beyond there. On the other side bordering Ioneos was more mountainous terrain, likewise with Ioneos following suit. Between those two, the land was mostly hills and plains, and that we would be riding out on the plains by tomorrow evening likely.

Ray then turned the focus towards political relations, to which he was replied that at the moment relations were at least decent, though in some places tense. Melivedia and Gaellus frequently disagree about things, though apparently an arranged marriage between the Gaellan Princess seems to have brought the two together, for the time. Ioneos and it’s island maintain a mutual peace, to allow either country to keep to it’s own affairs. Thosana out to the north tried to keep good relations with all three mainland countries whose coast it was off, Gaellus, Melivedia, and a northerly country past Melivedia, though maintaining neutrality between Gaellus and Melivedia has posed problems for it in the past. For Genadis, Marsagos, and Ethia there was little to say other than that they had peaceful relations generally.

When Ray mentioned the plague, Aeth realized that he might have been misunderstood earlier. “It is a common disease that infects those who have chosen to live in filth or who are too impoverished to maintain their own health.”

Then Aeth declared that it was time to sleep, else face a late start on the next day. Lady Emerita agreed and retreated to the carriage, while the driver who had drawn morning watch snored on. Despite my usual inability to fall asleep at night, I found that I was well worn enough that it was only a short time before I nodded off.

(If anyone wishes to whisper to anyone else just before they fall asleep, you may do so now, for it will take a bit of time before I am free enough to do a morning post; in fact, you can assume at some point on your own that it is morning and begin interaction with each other. Sorry this took so long, I started writing it just before I was bombarded with a series of essays and assignments, and between then and my first break, Ray added to the information he wanted out of me, so I was held into the second wave of time-consuming things. But enough of that—you already know I’m a whiner.)

(Note- I would prefer it if rather than declaring one’s actions, I could have players doing the actions. I understand that often it is appropriate to leave the details to the imagination (having enjoyed this aspect on occasion, like when Eugenides is busy bad-mouthing his fellow travellers) but it often makes it easier to understand and refer to, specifically with regards to speech, though this might apply to many different actions)

(*Crane-man’s quote to Tree-ear is from the book A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park)

A little role-playing back and forth (maybe kidnap Bronwyn while at it) would be good, before we go to the mines for some more action. Also, perhaps our elfy-princess-runner-ranger (I'm not sure which tag applies best) should stave of her return until a time more likely when the return is going to be noted (as when she returns won't be for a little while, and just maybe Kaelyn has something for you to do while out traveling--like what those two in the dungeon were up to, with their whole exposing more of the plot by releasting that ice-sorceress lady).

Long after the sun once again took its sovereign command of the domain of the sky, Willow felt cold. Thanks to the years of upheaval past, rare was the man, woman, or child who had not already familiarized themselves with the phenomenon of death, though here, a full year after those times, the old wounds were proven to still carry pain. Even more so, almost, for after that wondrous day when the times of trouble finally ceased, it seemed as if the world would be alright again, but those foolish dreams were cast down with this latest tragedy.

They returned to Wanqir, late in the summer evening, when the sun was already going down on the fourth day since Twilight. Mitsuru and the Scout, as well as the tag-along Akihiko disappeared into Council meetings from the moment they arrived at the glorious Citadel. Just about as quickly, Armand and his companion, Deunan announced that they had business to attend to and departed, while the tall dwarf Manalagna disappeared with significantly less ceremony. If indeed he had decided that this quest was too much for him, Willow could hardly blame him. To have actually been dead and resurrected to life was something entirely more than the average person ever expected to have to deal with.

Inside the Citadel awaited an unkempt man who had arrived too late to join the advance party. Come to think of it, that may have been the only thing that saved his life. Could his tardiness have been the only thing keeping him from adding to the death toll? Or would his presence have significantly altered the battle in favour of victory? Such thoughts were useless, for they wouldn’t bring back a piece of Yin or the others large enough for Mitsuru to magick back to life (It occurred to Willow to ask).

Willow had hardly the patience to listen to the man introduce himself. She was too upset to even become self-conscious when he marvelled at her height. He went about jovially introducing himself to the party, who were taking the chance to depart to tend to their own needs. Only the mysterious elf, Dusk, the scythe wielding Xira, the newcomer Mortimer, and herself remained in the front hall of the Citadel.

Dusk murmured something under his breath near Willow. He looked up at Mortimer. “There are fourteen. Four humans were slain by whatever it is we fight," he said, louder and clear enough for everyone to hear. "Remember every life until the task is complete. We stand on the backs of the dead."

His speech touched Willow more than she thought. Perhaps the tall, dark-clothed elf had something of a heart beating inside his thin frame after all. With a twirl of his cloak, the elf stalked off to the armoury, where not long ago wrestled her team in a terrifying bumble. And now their bodies lie cold, assuming they even have that respect afforded them. Willow thought. She could almost hear Joseph’s voice, telling her that not all the world was as dark and pessimistic as it sometimes seemed.

She gazed thoughtfully at the black and bandaged scythe over Xira’s shoulder. “What good is the power to cause death?” She asked bitterly to herself, though louder than she intended. (Xira has room for a response, should she choose to do so).

I have done battle with real life time-consuming matters, and have (almost) emerged victorious.

That said, deadline is noted and I'll see what I can do. Glad to see more players showing up.

Also, allow me to be the first Innmate to welcome you, Ava, to the madhouse otherwise refered to as the Red Dragon Inn.
