To the North: The increasingly civilized plains of South Rostland, filled with mostly farmlands and villages. There is little wilderness to explore in this direction.

To the West: The land gently slopes away into a large and dangerous swampland known as the Hooktongue Slough, infested with tribes of boggards and lizardfolk, and dangerous monsters. On the far side of the slough are the rugged hills of the Glenebon Uplands, heavily populated with barbarian tribes.

To the East: The hilly Kamelands of the Greenbelt continue to rise and eventually become a legitimate mountain range known as the Tors of Levenies. The craggy peaks are home to all manner of monsters, trolls, and numerous massive and foreboding ruins. Beyond the Tors lie the ragged steppes (a type of plain) claimed by the barbaric centaur tribe called the Nomen, who give the region the name of Nomen Heights.

To the South: The new charter asks you to explore the southern Greenbelt. It is even less tame and hospitable, with all manner of rumours of lizardfolk tribes, massive owlbears, sinister fey, and a particularly dangerous tribe of trolls. Further south is the River Kingdoms

Subject: Dramatis Personae

The Cast

Kyrie Ivanova
Taldan Paladin (Reralae)
5'8"
140lbs + Gear
Age 21
Brown hair, short w/ green streak
Green eyes
Tanned complexion

Kyrie, the youngest, carries her shovel with a casual authority. You would almost laugh at the poor girl and her weapon, but you had been there when a clueless magistrate thought to turn her away from the offices where you all signed the charter, thinking to keep away foolish girls. Whatever your reservations about her choice of weapon, you no longer doubt that she can and will use it effectively, though time will tell if she can handle herself in real combat. You suspect yes. Her reason for being in the Greenbelt, having come from a life of farming on the Rostland plains (you don't tell her that you guessed that already), is that she came to join the fight against the bandits threatening the roads lately.

Valen Krii
Varisian Dhampir Sorcerer (Nyrodine Ezayo)
6'4"
180bs + Gear
Age 28
White hair, shoulder length
Reddish-orange eyes
Very pale, almost blue-white complexion

Krii, who prefers to go by his last name, hails all the way from Ustalav. The tall, seemingly albino man with his long white hair and red-orange eyes, has lived on the frontier of the Stolen for some time, due to a sequence of events involving the being orphaned at early age, the loss of his uncle, and finally adoption by a troupe of gnomes who settled in the region due to their belief in its connection with the First World. Intrigued by the prospects of hidden knowledge burried in the reason, and prospects of power to be had in conquering its secrets, Krii traveled to Restov in hopes of joining one of the groups being sent into the four regions. Pictured here.

Miguel Lebeda
Taldan Bard (Okron)
5'10"
165lbs + Gear
Age 26
Blond hair, straight, shoulder length
Green eyes
Lightly tanned complexion

Miguel had been a bard living in Restov before he took on the charter, studying his dual passions of music and fencing. Those native region recognise his long, single-edged sword as an Aldori dueling sword, which marks him as a member of that school. By all accounts he is utterly carefree, extremely personable and easy to get along with. It's hard to imagine the blond dandy in a fight he couldn't talk down, except perhaps one caused by his roguish charmsthough his musculature suggests he could handle himself anyway. When asked why he came to sign on with the Greenbelt Charter he proclaims his desire to test his mettle against the ruffians and scoundrels known to thrive here, and perhaps have a good time between. While you don't doubt this is true, his over-indulgence in bravado makes you wonder if that is the whole story. Dueling sword.

Giles Alexandria Nox
Aasimar Chelaxian Inquisitor (Nyrodine Ezayo)
5'11"
189lbs + Gear
Age 33
Black hair, shoulder length
Blue eyes
Light tanned complexion

Frodrick Redbrew
Dwarf Cavalier (Shades331)
4'1"
178lbs + Gear
Age 190 (Old)
Red hair, some white, dwarven style
Hazel eyes
Bronze-tanned skin

Frodrick (the last of Clan Redbrew), on the other hand, is by far the oldest member of those assembled to sign on to the Greenbelt Charter. Even by dwarf standards the man is well along in years, and at a hundred and eighty-nine it shows in his beard which by now shows just as much white as its original red. He rides upon the back of his trusty war-trained mare Jargon Hooves and carries a traditional waraxe of dwarven design. He quickly tells anyone who inquires that he is the last of a small clan of dwarves in an out-of-the-way section of the Icerime Peaks, overrun by goblins. His purpose in the Greenbelt is to find an honourable warrior's death, dragging as much filth and corruption down with him that he can sink his axe into before they get him.

Zeran Stormsinger
Chelaxian Gunslinger (Zeakol)
5'10"
180lbs + Gear
Age 24
Black hair, shoulder length, straight; sexy pirate hat
Light blue eyes
Lightly tanned complexion

Zeran, with a unique personal swagger and even more unique weapon appears to be a sailing man hailing from the nearby lawless region of the River Kingdoms. His tricorn hat suggests much of his life has been spent aboard decks, though you can only imagine what it has to do with the unusual alchemical wand he keeps, which he calls a 'pistol'. He has come to the Greenbelt on a whim seeking adventure and entertainment.

Stefan
Taldan Cavalier (Cohort)
5'7"
140lbs + Gear
Age 16-17
Brown hair, short
Dark grey-blue eyes
Tanned complexion

Former Bandit, Squire of Frodrick

The official Q&A for my Kingmaker game. This whole thing will look a lot sexier when I have more time to put it all together. When that time comes, though, it will be a resource for you to look up various details pertaining to your lootz, your progress, and the world surrounding the Greenbelt as if affects you.

Until then, though, don't please don't post until I say so (or until you ask me and I realize I never said so, so I then say so, if it is so)

EDIT: The Q&A is up and running. Feel free to say 'hi' to your fellow players.

Subject: A tale of a promising life cut short

Cieala, no last name nor pronunciation guide given, was found dead in the forest, apparently sacrificed by a group of mothmen to the giant ooze creature that they worship as a deity--no wait, it says she survived that. Died in a field littered with the bodies of dozens of mindless undead, apparently from the breath weapon of an ancient black dragon with which she had been arguing--or no, apparently that encounter, too, was survived. Found dead stripped of her weapons in a secluded temple filled with monstrously oversized breeds of spiders--no? She survived that too? Then what did kill this girl? Oh.

Cieala vanished mysteriously when the game she had been living in up to that point suffered critical existential failure. Contrary to the the adventures indicated above, she was only ECL 6 when she died, an Charismatic Hero aspiring to develop her psychic talents into the powers of a Telepath. She is probably not survived by her brother who was with her at the time and a third person, friend of the aasimar twins, when she vanished. I suppose really this obituary is about all of them.

Cieala was always known for her bright and upbeat personality, always very kind and forgiving of others (except that jerk of a black dragon) and spent many hours working for the charity group known only as the Hands of Faith. A park resident homeless man who knew her reported that he would always remember the angel carrying an umbrella who came to him for information concerning report of violence in the area and whose companions helped her to slay a rogue demon running loose in the area with the sword contained within her umbrella. This was, of course, right before he was erased along with the rest of the world he resided in.

Despite having survived more than her share of dangerous encounters, it is most tragic that she should fall victim to the great equalizer of PC's that is game decay.

Subject: Attempting to prove I’m not a negligent Chronicler as I may seem

Wednesday June 2, 1999
Evening
Unknown Location, USA

“Yo—we got a message from Adelaide, Michigan. One of our contacts there has called in to report an unidentified supernatural running around causing a bit of destruction. We have a couple suspicious animal attacks, a traffic incident, and some minor property damage.”

“Sounds like it’s probably a low-level fiend spirit acting independently of a summoner to me. The pattern of destruction is too random to be a directed attack.”

“That’s what I thought, too—I’m just checking what Agents we have in the area right now.”

“Adelaide you said, huh? Who’s there? No names spring to mind for that division.”

“That’s because there aren’t—Adelaide is considered low on the supernatural radar, despite being a fairly large city. They have a healthy number of non-Agent Gifted living there and, for reasons unknown, relatively few serious cases of monsters. Things generally take care of themselves. At any rate, if anything serious were to go on up there, Agents from Chicago could be brought in fairly quickly to sort things out.”

“Ah, not enough problems and even less manpower, huh?”

“Exactly. Here, I got the list of Agents in the area right now. It’s just one—” the man broke off the let out a low whistle.

“What? Who is it?”

“Trismegistos is the only Agent currently staying in Adelaide.”

“Oh, dear.”

“I’ve never felt sorry for these bastards, but—you kind of got to have some sympathy for the devils at times like this. Here, I’ll make the call. You file the contact’s report.”

Wednesday June 2, 1999
Late Evening
Somewhere in Adelaide

Nivit tried to concentrate on what form of mayhem he would gleefully wreak next, preferably bringing him closer to slaughtering the creatures who had showed up to prevent his summoning. He tried, but it was difficult; he couldn’t shake the pervading sense of dread.

It probably had something to do with the dark figure that had been following him for several blocks now, namely with the projected attitude of menace clearly radiating from it. Nivit realized he might have to kill this annoyingly persistent human. He tried not to let his eagerness at this thought show on his human face, though he would never know how poorly he was doing, passing no one on the way.

The fiend directed his human host down a dark alley—a time tested strategy for his subtler kills that he had already used the day before. He hid his man body in a dark corner and waited with the same expectant glee as a child on Christmas day.

Sure enough, the figure kept up the chase—as soon as the human rounded the corner, he could feel the strength of its spirit. A worthy prey, and a suitably delectable feast. He let out a miniscule whimper of anticipation.

Nivit drew his host’s knife slowly and prepared to strike from the shadows, but his shadow spoke, addressing him.

“Show yourself, hellspawn. Make this easy on yourself and let me get back to the hotel. I’ve got a date with a hot bath that I don’t want to be late for.”

“I think not, little human child. Your pain will almost be as delicious as your essence—if I can restrain myself for as long.” Nivit commanded his human body to leap out and strike the human.

Before he came close, however, energy exploded around his prey, channelling just as fast into a magical invocation directed by its words. He felt himself suddenly torn forcibly from his host body, leaving his physical form to collapse to the pavement below. Immediately he could feel his energy ebbing slowly to maintain his spiritual form in this world.

“Restrain it.” The magician commanded. An earth spirit that he didn’t notice before, lurking in the pavement beneath the human’s feet, called up slabs of rock and pinned Nivit to the spot, the spiritual battle not harming the physical man below at all.

“I could have merely banished you back to the hell you came from. We needn’t have done this the hard way. As it stands, though, you’re getting everything you and your kind deserve. Moreover, I’ve decided I don’t like you.”

As it spoke, the human’s personal aura radiated with gathering essence again, rapidly drawing on a sizeable amount. The human raised its hand and spoke the last words Nivit would hear out of his prey.

Puros antitolmos.

A font of magical fire lambasted Nivit’s body, devouring spiritual flesh in a swath of intense heat. Within a moment, the fiend need not worry anymore about securing an anchor in this world to protect it from energy drain, lacking enough substance even to be worried about it.

As soon as the psychic scream ceased, Trismegistos checked the fiend’s victim. There was no pulse. The magician cursed softly and examined the body. Several bite wounds, presumably from some sort of dog, bruising such as from the car crash described by the contact, and a well-disguised glancing bullet wound marked the man’s body. The only thing holding the man together was likely the fiend’s power itself.

The Agent codenamed Trismegistos sighed. There was nothing more to be done about it now.

“At least two dead—maybe more that I don’t know of, and countless others endangered,” the magician recited. “Another monster ended and the world can go on a little safer.”

Trismegistos yawned. “Damn, it’s been a long day; you’re starting to get sentimental on yourself. And don’t you say a thing,” this latter comment was directed at the incorporeal elemental beneath her feet. He, as per usual, said nothing in kind.

(X3 This post, too, would have been up last night, but the RDInn decided that I should only be allowed to update you once out of the blue, and that another would have to be delayed an appropriate period)

Topic: WitchCraft: The Strength of a Warrior
Subject: Guy-kun has a cadre of willing mentors and allies... thankfully none of them are like Guy-sensei

Wednesday June 2, 1999 (19d)
Afternoon-Evening
Adelaide Public Library

After making his call, Guy headed off to the Library, passing by the very spot where not twenty-four hours ago he had been declared a hero. Life went on, as it usually did, with no more indication of what happened there than a smattering of shattered glass where the black car came to its final parking.

Guy was at the receiving end of the occasional double-take or odd look as he entered the library. When teens weren’t in school during the day for whatever reason, one hardly expected to find them at the library. Nevertheless, he was not disturbed in his mission.

He selected for himself a handful of books to keep himself busy with, choosing on a whim a small stack of occult and supernatural lore books among the variety. His haul in hand, Guy found a small secluded table in a corner of the library to set up base for the day.

An hour and a half later Guy found himself in a morass of common practices and conflicting theories and interpretations without much solid information on ‘real’ supernatural affairs. He idled, wondering if the Cabal had access to more legitimate information.

His train of thought was quickly interrupted, however, when he noticed a man watching him. It was definitely the same man from the previous day. He got a better look at the man. Guy figured he was maybe in his mid-to-late twenties, with light brown hair. He wore dark black aviators and the same black coat, hanging open.

Guy watched him in return out of the corner of his eye for a moment, just to be sure the other man was actually looking at and not near his direction. In response, the man nodded at him, acknowledging that each was clearly aware of the other’s observation. He walked up to Guy’s table and took a seat across from him.

“Hello again,” he said. “As someone with a refined interest in the supernatural, I imagine you can understand my distress when I saw you, the very kid I came here to meet, leaving before we had a chance to talk. I almost doubted myself for a moment, but then you leapt out to save that girl, and I knew you were the one. I figured at first I would see if I could catch you when you showed up at the House, but then I had another foresight and had to return again today—you know how it goes.

“I’m Damiel, by the way—an esper much like yourself. Also like you I have a certain talent for understanding the nature and flow of Fate. Don’t feel that folk like us are all that common, though. Between you, I, and that woman you were speaking with yesterday, we make up probably the only major ‘foreseer’ espers in the entire Keewinaw Peninsula at the moment.

“But that’s enough out of me. If I’m going to convince you to join us, I may as well take the time to ask your name.”

---

(For expedience, these we can carry on these two conversations simultaneously)

Around four-thirty in the afternoon, the person whom Guy had set out to meet had finally arrived. He put aside thoughts of his previous visitor and signalled Joan to his table.

Even before she sat down, Guy could sense an aura of nervous energy around the older woman. She did a good job of hiding it, but she was worried about something.

“We’ve met, but we haven’t been formally introduced yet,” she said amicably enough. “I’m Joan, pleased to meet you, Guy.”

I had hoped to have the next post up for Guy tonight (err... this morning? *glances at watch*) but it turns out constructing conspiracies and secret organizations is busy work to execute properly.

Ideally, full-group post will follow Guy's post, assuming my attention doesn't suddenly become a highly demanded commodity.

You're hardly alone in that regard Been a little preoccupied lately with this and that and haven't gotten around to starting the next bit o' shizzle.

Mmmm... there's plenty of opportunity here for a little roleplaying, but that's lacking a catalyst to go about it with, since like I said, the next few days are pretty free-form.

Options Aaron has to play with in the meantime are: Trying to follow through on the threat he left the other hitman, should fail to arrive like he did; Become increasingly curious about the supernatural, having seen another sort of spirit, and call Joan up; Get in touch with this creature on your sheet listed as 'contact'; Ponder furiously to yourself at school between classes about this news that there is some party out there that wants you dead (fully giving a damn or not); Some other option devised for a bit of between the acts fun.

I'll grant, none of your options lead you very far down the line, but if you wanted to try something to have fun with something until I get the real updatin' on, these could be used for jumping-off points.

*checks dates* dang, the time really did get away from me between that last post and now.

Come at your leisure and your own peril. Perhaps Aaron could have excluded that part. Whether his mark was scared off or simply too lazy to arrive punctually, he didn’t know which was more frustrating.

The hitman shifted, causing the flies furiously populating the corpses in the lobby to scatter for less than a half second before they returned to their feast.

Whatever had happened down here while he was hunting the insolent Mr. Anderson was serious business. A large swath of linoleum flooring was charred, dried pools of blood were everywhere between the entrance and the hall to its right. In that space lay one man and his knife, dead for a bloody lack of his entire throat, a woman by a revolver, dead from a bullet wound in her back, presumably (he hadn’t checked) and the robed cultist with the baseball cap, dead from a savage bite to his neck, apparently, as well as some bruising visible under portions of his shirt. The bullet casings littering the ground besides that suggested that either there were some terrible shots present among the crowd, or else those they had been shooting walked off with a number of holes in them—something that didn’t seem as unlikely to Aaron as it once did.

Aaron decided to head back upstairs where the smell of death was less overpowering. He stalked the halls for another half hour before finally calling the showdown a complete ruin of an evening. It was now 2:13 and the other hitman had not shown up. He cursed privately to himself. He was not going to get any sleep for school the next day.

Aaron (next day) -3 Endurance (-3, 4-hour sleep)

(Nothing is going to happen for the next handful of days, so actions can be dictated up to, let’s say, a week. Guy can go ahead and start talking with Joan and/or meeting with the Cabal members in the city. Aaron and Lily… well, if you can think of something, go ahead. Next part coming (hopefully) soon(ish))

Hehe, indeed if you look at a lot of characters, sword and magic skills are often both present to some degree in a great many of them XD. Short of applying some Swordmage / Magus / other magic/melee combo class to all of them, there is also the opportunity to focus on some aspects of the character more than others (for example, Mario doesn't always have his hammer, and often has access to fireballs).

Of course, when they're comprised of magic and melee wedded in harmony, the aforementioned classes may still be applicable. To say nothing of cross-classing (for 3.x) and those class-combo feats (for 4e). Anyway, good stuff people! Keep 'em coming!

I had an idea and I thought maybe others might like to share in it. The idea is to take famous or popular characters from any franchise and speculate what their specs in any version or variation of D&D might be. These speculations can be anywhere from epic visions of the character to hilarious crack-suggestions for the lulz.

For one example, a classic:

Mario
Human Fighter
Weapon Specialization (Hammer)
Equipment: Some kind of large two-handed hammer, such as the Maul, or Pathfinder's Earthbreaker
The hero of the Mushroom Kingdom is never seen without his iconic red hat. He wields his massive hammer with proficiency against the foes who would seek to capture the beautiful Princess Peach.

The lines begin to blur and things get more interesting as you drift into the less clearly defined, humanoid characters:

Mr. Game and Watch
Gnome (Many possible classes, each quite amusing to comprehend) Monk, Ninja, Cleric of some Mad God, etc.
This eccentric Gnome covered head-to-toe in black cloth rarely speaks saving the occasional utterly incomprehensible phrase.

Of course, you can tailor your ideas to specific aspects of the character (I think most characters popular in geek culture don't fit perfectly within the confines of a single possible build... even Conan the Barbarian, inspiration for the Barbarian character class probably had levels in Rogue)

So let me have 'em! Who are the characters and what are the stats you'd assign them? As you might see from my examples, include as much detail as fits your theme.

I leave you with one more example:

Link
(Human, Elf, Half-Elf, something like that) Ranger
Weapon Style: Sword and Shield (Pathfinder's Advanced Player's Guide)
Animal Companion: Epona (Light Horse)
Favoured Enemies: Humanoid [Goblinoids] (you know who I'm talking about), Undead, Humanoid [Evil Gerudo Warlocks]
Equipment: Master Sword (+X Holy Longsword), Large Shield, Chain Shirt, Shortbow, many more things
The legendary Hero of Time proudly wears the green Hero's Garb over his chain armour. He wields the Sword of Evil's Bane among many other specialized tools that he uses in his quest to hunt down and destroy the evils plaguing the land of Hyrule

The psychic impression washed over Lily. It persisted while she checked her bag, but abruptly cut off as she started moving. Who or whatever was building up the energy had clearly put it to use. In the wake of the power source the traces of energy blurred and waned, but the initial impression was strong and likewise left lingering residual patterns.

Lily travelled about a block before she traced the source of the quickly fading trail to the area of an alley. Carefully, surreptitiously Lily snuck a peek down the alley for signs of what may have been going on.

Whatever the young were-fox might have been expecting to see, what she found in that alley wasn’t it. A large tan-coloured dog, apparently a pit bull, lay on the ground, unmoving. While her human nose wasn’t nearly as refined as that of her fox body, Lily could clearly smell blood in the alley, picked out among the many and varied typical odours of the alley.

She listened carefully and scanned the alley for any signs of movement, but determined that it was empty save for the dog. Of the dog itself, by sight alone she could tell little from this distance, but a dark stain on the alley floor around it offered a possible source for the sharp metallic scent of blood.

Tension never left the would-be hitman’s form as Aaron slowly and deliberately pronounced his failure, nor as he recounted the location and terms of their later meeting. How could he have missed that?

When Aaron finished, ‘Mr. Smith’ said nothing, but merely nodded his head and kept his eyes on the floor, clearly cowed. He collected his janitorial equipment and took his cart, leaving Aaron alone in the empty washroom.

That business taken care of, Aaron reconstructed his Avalon persona for the rest of the day’s classes. After that, he would swing by his house to pick up his equipment, and then head back to the abandoned Copper Island General Hospital for another night of entertainment.

“On my –?” Hip seemed confused for a moment when he returned to hear Guy’s answer, but he quickly realized what the young man was talking about. “Seer. Right. I didn’t know you could do that with premonitions—Joan’s certainly are not usually so lucid.”

“Pleased to meet you, Guy. You can call me Jessie, when we’re not on a mission. Tall dark and gloomy there is Rebecca, and Becky if you have a thing for pain.” On the queue of well-practiced habit, the girl swatted Jessie on the arm.

“Hopefully if we run into each other again we can work together better,” Jessie said, “We’re only a small group, but we will do what we can to help you keep the monsters where they belong.” He waxed mock-grandiose, “The unsung heroes of the night.”

“Seriously though, things are happening. Take care of yourself out there.”

The patrol cars and ambulance rolled up. “Looks like this is where we part. You ever reported an accident before? Word of advice—the authorities don’t like hearing about things like spiritual senses and psychic impressions. Talk to you later!”

The police collected accounts of the accident and had the car towed. The cops who talked to Guy all had positive things to say about the youth and let the crowd go about their business. Guy figured that if he headed directly home from here he would probably make it home just in time to be only a little late for supper.

(Guess what? Today is the same day, minus the position in the week, as the game began (unless you're reading this tomorrow, in which case you're on today). I figured it only fitting that I finally turn this post in today since it was such a special occasion ^^)

‘Hippocrates’ made eye-contact with Guy as he approached.

“Would you mind taking a quick look at the girl for me? I have no experience or knowledge with medicine, but I know that you do.

“Also,” lowering his voice a little and getting a bit closer, “I think that I need to speak with Joan. It would really help if I could get her number from you.”

‘Hip’ almost cringed when Guy said Joan’s name. He opened his mouth and then shut it, looking around before speaking in equally hushed tones. “How do you know our real names?” He gave ‘Maud’ a nod and went to the girl.

Maud looked at Guy without saying anything.

[Guy’s Response]

Maud fished a business card out of her back pocket and gave it to Guy. It said Magical and Paranormal Consulting, with Joan’s contact info underneath.

“I don’t think that was a very normal incident,” Guy said.

“I take it you felt the same presence we did? We think it may have been the driver, but that’s just guessing at this point.” She bit her lip in thought before adding, “Fl—Joan thinks the fiend spirit may have found a new host and might be still running around. We hadn’t thought about it at the time, but I suppose you and the hitman may be in trouble if it comes across you.”

Hip returned. “Just a skinned knee and some rattled nerves. The ambulance will have some disinfectant and a bandage for her when it gets here in another minute. She’s lucky you were there.”

“Now, would you mind telling us your name so we can establish a bit of a basis of communication here? You seem to know a bit about us but you’re still a complete mystery. Don’t be a stranger now, eh?”

Btw, small note; Guy was headed in this direction because he takes the Adelaide Metro home from here.

What has less syllables in pronouncing it than as an acronym?

The would-be hitman couldn’t see any trace of the school-teacher he had been watching these last weeks. Less syllables than its acronym… Why the riddle? It was clear that Mr. Smith couldn’t kill him now because of their public location, plus it didn’t seem as if he had any weapons—granted, neither did he—but what could he gain from the riddle?

The letters of the acronym would have to have more syllables than the words they represented, and it would probably have to be one spoken as initials, not a word itself. What words existed like that?

Mr. Smith watched him from behind an inscrutable mask of derision. It occurred to the hitman that this must be what it was like to be on the other side of the contract. As much as he would have hated to admit it and refused to show it, the experience was terrifying.

He tried to approach the situation rationally. What was the worst that could happen from failing the riddle? It looked like Smith still wanted him dead pretty badly, but the riddle was only to determine how their conflict would be resolved, not the resolution itself. Failure here only meant that he would have to not fail later.

An idea! Sure, this man seemed young. It was possible he was young enough to enjoy this sort of thing. The hitman envisioned telling his client to go screw themselves, that they couldn’t pay enough for a target this dangerous.
He hastily counted the syllables in his mind. It seemed right, and it didn’t look like he had exactly all the time in the world to make his answer.

“Would that be the World Wrestling Federation? WWF?” He watched Smith’s face for the first sign of a reaction, whether he had been right or wrong.

Yes, if you were wondering, the hitman chose poorly. That’s seven syllables in both; neither is longer. Yes, I do know at least two answers which would have succeeded.

After School
Outside Public Library

Guy stepped out into the street at a casual pace. He needed to find someway to see if he was being followed by the man from his vision—and some way to escape him, if he was coming.

The young psychic glanced casually into the mirrored façade of the library. He saw the man following him at a sensible distance but with no real art for disguising his presence.

Now all he had to do was shake him. Easier said than done, but Guy trusted Fate to guide her agent—either into or away from an encounter as necessary. He turned at the corner of the block, weaving through people getting ready to cross the street.

He had to force himself not to look over his shoulder to see where the man was. Even in predestination there was a certain flicker of curiosity that raised its head occasionally. He followed this street to its corner also. The flashing “don’t walk” signal had just started when he skipped across the road, trapping his pursuer on the other side.

Guy pressed the button and joined the crowd crossing in the other direction, looking for the man out of the corner of his eye. The walk signal came on and he crossed with the crowd.

---

Jessie and Rebecca stepped off the Adelaide Metro onto the station platform.

“All I’m sayin’ is that it would be nice if we could get a nice two-week break to relax from anything crazy happening.” Jessie said.

Rebecca started to say nothing, but was interrupted by a sudden sensation—the feeling that something crazy was about to happen. “Did you feel that?”

“Holy—!” Jessie started. A black car passed them, driving too fast, headed for a busy crosswalk.

---

Guy saw the car coming at the same time as his supernatural senses kicked in. His mind’s eye flashed with a quick vision of the car bearing down on him without slowing. He saw most of the crowd moving out of harm’s way, but the girl in pink next to him would be too slow to react.

Taking the sign for what it was, Guy leapt at the girl, shoving her and himself out of the way of the car hardly a second too soon. The black car sped out into the intersection, narrowly missing a van before coming to a permanent stop, hood buried in a streetlight.

A man stumbled out of the car and quickly broke off running down the street, fleeing the scene.

At the crosswalk the crowd gathered around the two lucky kids, cooing their concern. The girl scrapped her knee when she hit the pavement and Guy banged his arm, but otherwise the two were largely unharmed.

Guy was praised for his courageous actions while the sound of sirens approached. Of more pressing concern to Guy was to look for his follower—he couldn’t spot him in the crowd. It seemed Guy’s sudden publicity had turned him away for now. Just as well.

He realized he wouldn’t be able to escape delivering a witness statement and prepared his everyday-hero account for the cops, waiting to be examined and finally released.

With a small sigh he looked up and was surprised (as far as the emotion ever registered on him) to spot two of the group from last night. They weren’t looking at him, so they didn’t notice his gaze.

---

“It’s gone.”

Rebecca nodded in confirmation. “I’m betting whatever we felt was behind that crash.”

“Nothin’ we can do about it now,” Jessie said with a sign, peering down the street where the man escaped. Rebecca made a small noise.

“Hey—look there.” She pointed out where Guy was sitting on the curb, surrounded by fellow witnesses.

Jessie’s eyes widened in surprise. He looked at Rebecca. “Coincidence?”

“I’m steadily loosing faith in these coincidences,” she said.

“Do you think we should go over and say ‘hi’?”

“No. He didn’t seem to want to talk much last night. If he wants to speak, let him come to us.”
