Topic: Q&A: The Day They Woke Up on the Wrong Side of Reality
Subject: Manoeuvring into a position of greater wisdom

Long story short, CMB is your grapple modifier and CMD is your defence against. Since it's not really that long of a story:

CMB - Combat Manoeuvre Bonus
(BAB + Str + Size)

Your Combat Manoeuvre Bonus is very similar to what your grapple modifier did for you before, except that it applies to all Combat Manoeuvres, which include all those many-odd things that few people ever remembered existed (Trip, Sunder, Overrun, etc.). Essentially, it is so that you don't have to go look up what modifiers you apply to a Trip attack or a Sunder attack, they're all in one place.
Special: Tiny or smaller creatures us Dex, not Str. Also, Monks gain ability that lets them pretend they have a Good BAB when doing manoeuvres, making them a bad idea to grapple with.

CMD - Combat Manoeuvre Defence
(BAB + Str + Dex + Size + Some of the modifiers that apply to AC)

This is basically your AC against Combat Manoeuvres. Various things that apply to your AC (insight bonuses, deflection bonuses) also enhance your CMD. Unlike CMD, Tiny and smaller creatures don't get to substitute out their Str. I can't think of anything else to say for this.

For a complete list of Combat Manoeuvres, click here. It should be pretty much everything in the special attacks section from before.

Subject: Coming in to Meet the Missus

Pay Day – Continued
Friday, June 27, 1008
Corazon, Gaellus

We disarmed ourselves at the gate and followed the servant boy into the mansion itself, rather than the garden as with last time. Alongside him strode Kiara, fully armed and just as dangerous as when she walked in the door as she made occasional passes in attempt to trip the poor child.

The architecture of the mansion, as with much of the property of the smiling Daisuke Sakamoto, bore qualities strongly reminiscent of Japanese design from our world, and the halls were decorated even closer along this cultural theme.

A few turns brought us to a room lined with chairs, a couple small round windows, and a suit of rather authentic looking samurai armour on display by the closed door that led to the next room. There was a soft murmur of voices drifting from the closed door.

“This is the office waiting room. My mistress is busy right now and will see you shortly. Please wait here until she calls you in.” With that, the servant boy disappeared at a run through the door we came in.

We hardly settled into the room when we heard shouting coming from the office, “What!? What do you mean incomplete!?”

The reply came only as a murmur, then the raised voice again. “What’s the difference?” it asked. The calmer voice answered with several sentences.

“This is ridiculous! I—I demand to be paid in full!” There was a terse response, then the calmer voice raised enough to be heard. “I will be seeing the next group now!”

We did as we were bid and opened the door. Inside a man—apparently the shouter—stood with his back to us, leaning over the desk. Just behind him to his right was another man, just taller than him, who turned to see us enter, and on his left a shorter woman stood impassively away from the other two. The men each wore a scabbard for a sword, but the woman bore no visible arms. Because I'm an idiot and forget things easily, pretend that you saw the men with empty scabbards. They would have disarmed at the front gate. The woman is unchanged.

The leader glanced over his shoulder at us and apparently rethought his position.

“You have been fairly paid for the work you have done and now I have other deals to attend to. Please leave before I am forced to make you.” The voice came from a small, frowning Asian woman, probably about the same age as Mr. Sakamoto, sitting behind the desk, largely obscured by the man standing in front of her.

He looked to his companions, then back at Mrs. Sakamoto. Without another word, he turned and left, pushing past us, the man and woman following him more politely.

Mrs. Sakamoto had short silver hair, her face was round and she had sharp brown eyes. She regarded each of us with a small smile. The study itself was fairly spacious with a very large window overlooking some part of the gardens behind the desk.

“Greetings, I am Sakamoto Kahoko, Daisuke’s wife. You must be the new employees. You are here for your payment, yes?” She took the scroll and then drew six small bags of gold from somewhere behind the large desk and pushed them across the desk to us.

“Yes, well done. Were you interested in taking another contract? As you might have heard, we have a job that could use some attention.”

Last Night, Today, and This Evening
Friday, June 27 (7th Day) [Though Tyr, Odin, Thor, Freya, and Saturn have never been gods in this world, I’ll stick to traditional day-naming conventions]
Surton->Corazon, Gaellus

Galen used his magic to heal as many of our wounds as he could that night, but like me he only had so much magical strength, and had to choose the worst injured. The tear in my leg, as well as Ben and Jeremy’s wounds disappeared under his ministrations, and though Ray’s knee still ached pretty fierce, the pain vanished by morning. Between Galen’s healing and my cleaning cantrip, the six of us rose for breakfast the next morning fresh as daisies (mildly impressing our hosts).

It was still early in the day by the time we set out for Corazon, ferried back to the capital in a cart with Ray and Ben riding the borrowed horses. I spent fifteen minutes in meditation to recharge my energy, not bothering to change up my memorized selection.

“We ought to save up for our own cart,” I told Ben while I watched Galen undergo his own spell-preparation ritual.

A couple hours into our journey we were met with excitement. The same (recognized by the ugly blood-matted wound it bore) wolf that Ray had chased off leapt out of the grass ahead of us, causing our draw horses to stop dead in their tracks. Alarmed, I looked back, prepared to have to fend off a rear attack, but something else happened instead.

Before the wolf had a chance to spring its attack, a second wolf tore out of the grasses and leapt on the first. They rolled, parted, and got to their feet, facing each other. The squared off for a second, then the newcomer—identified by its decidedly less feral appearance—bolted back off into the grass, followed quickly by the first.

Puzzled, my heart pounded away for another moment before my adrenaline levels returned closer to normal. Not knowing what else to do and preferring to leave before another challenge was issued, we continued on our way, wondering precisely what had happened.

---

We were dropped off at the Cat’s Cradle around the middle of the afternoon—apparently just about every traveller coming from the south knew or knew of the place on South Gate St., and our driver was able to bring us there directly.

On the table in the room that Ray, Galen, and I shared there was a note left for us, or more specifically, for Ben and Ray.

Ben & Raymond,

My requests for an audience have been delayed, and as such, I shall be remaining in the city for a time. Based on present conditions, it appears I shall not require your services until the Saturday after next (5th of July) at the earliest.

Lady Emerita Desmos of the Abeila Province of Gaellus

“I suppose that means we’ve got another week to screw around,” I said, “You think we should get another job from Mr. Sakamoto?” Guard jobs seemed like a fairly decent way to make a living, and Sakamoto seemed to be a reliable employer. “Then maybe after another pay check we’ll be able to try to puzzle out what the hell we’re doing here.”

Making a note to pick up Galen’s weapons later and stop by the blacksmith, we made our way to the Sakamoto Estate. We showed the guard at the gate our contract and he summoned a servant boy—this time a real servant, dressed as such, and not young Suzume—to lead us in.

“Mr. Sakamoto is away, presently, so his wife will attend to your business," informed the guard before directing the servant.

Scant Moment Until Sunset
June 26 (6th Day)
Barn of Death

To Ray’s frustration, the pitch blackness of the loft completely concealed the hound’s form in its depths, preventing him from targeting it. He would either have to wait for it to come back into the light, or go up with a light himself.

He sheathed his sword as I stepped forward with a cantrip to illuminate Ben’s weapon. Both of them had reached the same decision. Ben sheathed his sword and climbed the ladder one handed, with Ray just behind him doing the same. Ben stepped onto the loft into darkness. The lights from the torches below reached the roof just above him, but the loft itself blocked out light directly above it. He wasted no time drawing his sword, casting his entire side of the barn in to bright light which dimmed into darkness toward the far end where the hound’s dark outline could be seen.

Almost as soon as the light was drawn, the hound leapt off the wooden board with a savage growl, trailing hay onto the ground below it as it flew across the air toward Ben. It ignored the minor pain of the arc of electricity from Galen that struck it mid-charge as it bounded through the air toward its target. (-1 elec)

Ray, still hanging on the ladder could practically feel the monstrous presence just behind him as it barrelled into Ben and clamped its jaws around his upper thigh. (-7 dmg Ben [22/29]) Ben held his ground, despite the pain, and was not felled by the attempt to knock him over. It hurt a good deal, but in his toughened hero’s body, he was able to push it out of his mind.

Jeremy was stuck at the bottom of the ladder, waiting for a chance to climb up and get into the fight as soon as space clear, meanwhile Ian couldn’t risk taking his torch up into the loft.

Below, I channelled my mental power into another dimly glowing translucent missile of force and hurled it at the hound. (-4 dmg, Red) The hound took the bolt hard in the ribs—it looked like it was beginning to wear down, which was good, because I was also beginning to wear down on my magical essence.

Ray 17/19 (1 PP) ---- Ben 22/29 ---- Jeremy 18/18 ---- Ian 20/20 ---- Owen 9/14 (3 SP) ---- Galen 17/17 (1:4)
Ray: +1 AC, CMD, Saves (Defensive Precognition) 4/10-r ~ No Shield AC, Flat-footed (Climbing) [total AC +3/+6 right now]

Yeth Hound – Red Status; -2 AC (Charge) 1-r

The light spell I had cast on Ben’s sword just a moment before hadn’t taken almost any effort, just an act of will, but this offensive (let’s face it, by now there was no point in questioning) magic missile require very real focus and exertion by comparison. I figured that a few more of these and I would be stuck to beams of cold air.

Meanwhile, Ben moved out of Ray’s way, side-stepping along the loft to get a better shot at the monster’s full flank and, with a cry, took it. He poured his strength into the slash and managed to bite through the beast’s tough hide, carving another wound among many into it. (-3 dmg)

While Ben held the monster’s attention, Ray leapt off the ladder onto the loft where Ben stood a moment before. He saw that the hound was pretty badly wounded, so he decided to throw caution to the wind for a second in an all out attempt to put it down now. He didn’t have enough experience with his psionic powers to know fully how deadly they could be when put to proper use, but he bet it would be a better shot that battering the monster’s hide.

Without taking care to defend himself, Ray channelled the force of his mind to crush the hound’s in a direct contest of will. The hound saw his distraction and leapt upon him with its jaws, but Ray saw it coming and dodged ably just as he released the pressure in his mind upon the beast.

The hound cringed as it fought to throw off the mental assault, but it was too weak to resist the power of Ray’s final lash of power. It thrashed in pain and its dully glowing eyes appeared to loose focus for a moment, but it wasn’t dead yet.

The badly beaten demonic hound reared up, looking like it was about ready to run, when another snap of electricity struck it in the flank. The damage from each individual bolt hadn’t been a lot, but they had contributed to the overall destruction. It flinched at this attack and slumped in the air slightly.

Seeming to recognize that its death was a foregone conclusion, the monster locked onto the first target to fall in its ailing vision. With the last of the power in its body, the yeth hound roared and savagely lunged for Ray. The savagery of the beast’s attack tore past his defences and closed with a crushing grip on his right knee. (9 dmg Ray [8/17])

With its jaws locked onto Ray’s knee, the hound’s consciousness finally gave out and its hateful expression slackened. Ray realized what was about to happen next, but couldn’t free his leg from the death grip as the hound’s body fell out of the air, dragging him with it.

With the lighting quick reflexes honed in the dodge ball court and enhanced by the passage into this world, Ian managed to escape most of hound’s fall, but Jeremy wasn’t so lucky and took the brunt of the four-hundred-pound weight. (-1 subdual, -3 dmg Ian [17(1)/20]) (-3 subdual, -6 dmg Jeremy [12(3)/18]) (-2 subdual Ray [8(2)/19])

In the moment before the rescue arrived at the barn door, I dismissed the light spell still illuminating the loft where Ben stood. The others had begun to worry that we had gotten into trouble when they heard sounds of a battle and the hound hadn’t been chased out yet.

“How should we dispose of the body?” Albert asked after we had rescued Jeremy from his situation.

“Ou–,” I cleared my throat for normal speech, “Outsiders like this demon”—I used the term loosely—“typically disappear one way or another after they die.”

“So it’s not yet slain? Do you think you could…?”

Ben obliged, flipping his shield over his shoulder to get both hands on his sword. He reversed the sword and placed his left hand on the pommel, and in a quick downward thrust, plunged his sword through the beast’s eye socket. When he drew the sword back out of the socket, black flames followed it.

“This may get very unpleasant,” I cautioned as the flames spread over the body before the onlookers.

After a few moments the flames died away, leaving only a giant blackened canine skeleton, which proceeded to crumble to dust. Not as bad as it could have been.

As we exited the barn the sun had just set in the west and the land was dark though the sky remained bright. We returned to the town an got ourselves patched up for the night.

(Once we're alone, Galen can allot his healings. Almost all of us are wounded (most of us from the battle, some from earlier encounters) and could use a little bit of assistance.)

Ray 8(2)/19 (0 PP) ---- Ben 22/29 ---- Jeremy 12(3)/18 ---- Ian 17(1)/20 ---- Owen 9/14 (2 SP) ---- Galen 17/17 (1:4)

Subject: Pre-emptive map update that may not need a map.

Yo, there might be a new map up here soon, depending on Ray's next action.

Meanwhile, I'd just like it to be known (partially so that I don't forget anymore) that when a map shows the altitude of a creature, that number represents how much distance there is between the bottom of the creature's space and the ground. For example, land-bound peeps effectively have +0, and Ray at the top of the ladder that you don't see has 2 empty squares below him because it says +10 next to him. Of course, that means if you are a medium creature with 5-ft reach, you couldn't hit him unless he was in the square above you at +5. Make sense? I hope so, it took me a little while to remember what I did the second time I saw it.

Also, I'm thinking of a new enemy-status system. Uninjured will be 100%; Green status shall run between 76% health to 99.9%; Yellow will take the space between 51% and 75%; 'Bloodied' (since I like the 4e term) will be 26%-50%; Red Status is 11%-25%; and finally, a special status 'Near Death covers the final 10%, with Staggered being 0% and Dying filling in the negatives. I may later decide that 'Near Death' takes too much space and decrease it a bit, but it works for now.

As the conductor vanished from the room, Guinevere only caught a fading trace of blue in the air that left the sole occupant of the room the veiled and masked seer. Guinevere’s eyes glanced around the room once, quickly, looking for exits and hazards while she practically skipped up to the figure at the desk. With an angelic smile she practically bored holes into the closed eyes of the mask with her gaze as she introduced herself and proffered her hand.

Instead of taking her hand, the seer responded with a sitting bow. “Uh,” Guinevere replied, amending her greeting to a cross between a bow and a curtsey.

"I've been called many names,” the voice behind the mask said, introducing itself with a name as Guin had introduced them, “but right now you can call me Rena.”

“How about the name of your, soul,” Bas’ growled softly, “Seems to me that was the requirement for us to get off the train in this town… Same rules don’t apply to you or what?”

“And yes,” the seer continued, addressing the little-spirit’s additional statement, “I know... I could hear the explosion from here, after all.”

“From here,” Bas asked dubiously, not entirely certain that the ghostly image of the conductor from just a moment ago was just coincidence, “or from there? What the hell’s goin’ on in this place… lady?”

Allowing Bas to take charge, Guinevere drifted over to the urn and took a peek inside. Habitually she poked the soil with her finger to test for dampness, and took a deep breath of the rich aroma. The scent took her back to her grandfather’s garden which she had left behind that very morning.

“So,” she interjected, looking up around the room, “I suppose you mean ‘velvet room’ as in a colour, not as in the fabric?”

Guinevere studied the pitcher with a thoughtful frown. “Hey Rena—if that is what you prefer to be called—how do you see with that mask on? Are the eye holes hidden or something?”

After hearing the answer to this question, she again paused as if she were considering the information she was collecting, narrowing her eyes at the dial at the back of the room.

Having strategically thrown her quarry off with her two seemingly innocuous questions, (alright, they were entirely innocuous) Guinevere suddenly asked, “And so why have you brought us here, to this town?” She watched the seer woman’s reaction to her ridiculous conclusion with an expression that would be best completed if she were wearing a double-brimmed Sherlock hat, blowing bubbles out of a pipe to reflect the apparent absurdity of her words.

I watched the hound disappear into the near pitch-black area over the loft. I scrambled out of the stall I withdrew into and tried to spot the hound. I scanned the darkness for hardly a second, but there was nothing to be seen. There wasn’t enough illumination on the second level to pick out any targets.

For a brief moment I wanted to throw my torch into the loft to illuminate it, but I knew there would be much too much dry hay and wood. Beside me Ben turned to start his way up the ladder. I stopped him for a moment and with a word and a touch I endowed the blade of his sword with a weak yellow glow, similar to that of our torches, and let him continue. Just as soon as Ben could make it to the top, the sword would expose the monster.

(Ben is going to have to sheath his sword (or shield) to climb, but with quick draw he can have it back out immediately (sheild would take some time, though).)

“You might want to come back to the foyer to be here at 11:27, that is, if you're still awake then.” The last thing Guinevere overheard as she and Bas started down the east wing.

With a bit of thrashing she managed to wiggle her sleeve down past her wrist and glanced at her watch. 12:10 Sun 10 the digital display read.

With a pause of confusion, she chided herself for not adjusting west over the time zone earlier. At the moment, Sebastian was beginning to get away from her, so she ignored it and ran to catch up.

The ‘velvet door’, so to speak, indeed had a strange pattern to it. Almost something one would expect to exist only in a chateau, belonging to a stage magician, flowing, and spiraling.

Guinevere gave an experimental sniff in the direction of the door. The patterns on the door drew the eye into many flowing twists and loops that flourished all over.

“Shall we go see?” Guinevere chirped almost anxiously, indicating the ‘seer’s door’ with an involuntary flick on her eyes, as Bas’ lupine gaze fixed on her.

“Yeah,” he chuffed, his eyes snapping back to Guin’s for an instant and then setting, once more, on the strangely patterned door, “Let’s get us a look, little spirit…”

Sebastian stalked up to the door and grasped the handle and paused without turning it. For a moment Guinevere was afraid that the seer had anticipated their arrival and had locked his door. It didn’t happen that often to her, but it had happened. Perhaps, even as they stood there trying to get in, he was now trying to escape through his boarded window, jumping in apprehension when the giant dark-haired man who had come for the bounty on his head clicked the handle. Any moment now, the terrifying figure would reach into his duster and draw forth his loaded shotgun, aiming it to blow off the handle of the door while his trusty sidekick began the invocation that would—Wait a sec.

Guinevere’s wild fantasy crashed to a halt when she suddenly realized that Sebastian hadn’t actually turned the handle yet, only wrapped his hand around it and prepared to open. She banished such thoughts and waited to see at least if the door actually was locked before she began to summon energy to work with.

With a twinge of impatience fueled by insatiable curiosity, Guin was wondering whether she should offer a word of encouragement to the timid figure that filled the doorway, or should throw the door open herself when Bas twisted the knob and threw the door open in a sudden motion.

Mostly obscured behind Sebastian’s six-feet-and-one-inch, Guinevere peered into the room from around him, interestedly taking in as many details as she could at once. “Helloo-oo, anybody home?”

(Assuming the seer is in, Guin will promptly offer her hand and introduce Bas and herself. “Hi, I’m Guinevere, and this is my friend, Sebastian. Our train just blew up.”)

Alright, you might notice a slightly darker spot just above the door that looks like the Hound. That is where it was last seen. The ladder is that line in the top corner. The light black is darkness, you need darkvision to see up there. The area around the roof of the barn is in full illumination, it's just the space immediately above the loft (since the floor is blocking the torch-light from below) that is dark.

Also remember: Shields are useless while climbing and you need at least one hand if you plan on going up. One-handed climbing the ladder is a pretty easy challenge, but swift climbing carries a -5 penalty. Two-handed climbing is incredibly easy, even swift climb would be near-effortless.

Raymond turned in time to see the hound bear down on me with its powerful fangs. Automatically his mind and body knew how he might dodge, but it wasn’t him who was attacked.

He raised his shield before him, prepared to defend himself, but instead of attacking, he stepped back to the far wall of the barn. As he had planned since he had heard of the Hound’s apparent resistance to weapons, Ray began to channel his psychic energies offensively as he had done with the wolf earlier that day.

Ray lashed out with his mind, creating pressure within the Hound’s mental pathways, but even as he did so, he could feel the beast resisting, pushing back, until the energy for the manifestation was gone from his mind.

As the adrenaline pumped into my brain, everything was becoming more and more lucid. I busily retreated into one of the stalls, putting distance between me and the Hound so that I could concentrate on my casting. Not wanting to hit Ian and Galen, I mentally picked out the homing Magic Missile spell and threw it at the monster, smiting it in its hovering foreleg. (-2 dmg)

Galen, too, retreated to focus on his casting. He fell back behind Ian and took aim at the beast’s flank, floating just over the wall of the stall behind it. This time, the crackling arc of electricity that leapt from his fingertips struck, singing fur and scorching flesh. (-1 elec Yellow Status)

As Galen escaped, Jeremy moved in to his spot to fight. He thrust his rapier into the Yeth Hound’s face, causing it to rear up do dodge him, snapping its teeth in fury.

On the other side, Ben moved in as well. He waited as it reared down within range, then, with a mighty guttural roar, he raised his sword above his head and wildly smote the flying monster in the shoulder, dragging his blade down through to its spare ribs, proving once and for all that the monster’s hide was by no means impenetrable. (-6 dmg—Nice Power Attack; Bloodied)

Acting more on new instincts than any coherent plan, Ian dove into a somersault, expertly rolling without hurting himself on his weapons. He popped up just in front of the Hound’s nose, between it and me, and delivered a swift blow from his torch on its neck that gagged the monster. (-3 dmg -1 fire; Red Status)

The Hound’s growl turned into a choked yelp as it recoiled from Ian’s blow. It snapped back, but then turned tail. Loping through the air, it bounded along under the loft and then leapt up where the airspace was least defended. Galen and Jeremy both struck out at it without success and it flew onto the loft and disappeared into the shadows above the door.

Ray 17/19 (1 PP) ---- Ben 29/29 ---- Jeremy 18/18 ---- Ian 20/20 ---- Owen 9/14 (3 SP) ---- Galen 17/17 (1:4)
Ray: +1 AC, CMD, Saves (Defensive Precognition) 3/10-r

Yeth Hound – Yellow Status; Totally concealed, last seen on the loft just above the door.
(you might notice that the Hound's status used to be listed as Green. I don't know what I was smoking, since I've already declared him to be bloodied )

(Alright, there's a lot to mention, so keep your pants on.
-It turns out you can’t use targeted spells on creatures you can’t see (e.g. Magic Missile, Mind Thrust) so I had to put Ray’s action on hold.
-Thanks to its total concealment, you can’t see it, so you have to pick a square to attack and have a 50-50 chance of hitting it if you guess right.
-Normally you need at least two free hands to climb, but a ladder is hardly a challenge, so with a free hand you can climb the ladder in a full-round, or one move action if you swift climb (-5 to check). If you get caught half-way up, shields are useless and you have no dex bonus.
-Remember that if you go up without any light, you are at a serious disadvantage (you’d be lucky the Hound doesn’t have any Rogue levels like Ray’s succubus).
-Happy hunting. I would encourage holding actions until a light spell makes it upstairs (don’t you dare throw your torch, you’d kill us all).)

I hope I didn't forget anything.

Subject: Alright, I promised it a while back, but here it is

Click Here If you're desperate to look at the old map

This is updated as per the end of the surprise round. I don't think there's really a lot to add here. Those red dots indicate that the character is holding a torch and shedding light.

The pools of gray are to show where the 'spots of shadow' are, but most probably wouldn't grant any concealment (especially against an enemy with Darkvision), count the larger pools as dim illumination.

Except for in a rectangle just above us and a logical spread outward toward the ceiling, on top of the loft is considered dark/no illumination (hint, you would die if you went up there to try to hide).

Hay lays strewn about the barn in corners (mostly in the stalls and a good deal stored in the loft) application of torch or other ignition to these dry mounds of tinder might be very fatal to all involved. Judicious application of ignition to the barn itself will also bring death, given enough time to catch fire.

(EDIT: Alright, it looks like the red dots are invisible, so just remember that Ian, Galen, and Myself (the three in the middle there) are holding torches.)

Subject: Plato’s Barn and the Shadows that compose visible reality

Almost Sunset
June 26 (Day 6)
Near Surton, Gaellus

Brother Harrison and a few youths from the town busily set up a first-aid station to deal with the injuries that would no doubt arise from the confrontation that was about occur. The middle-aged priest himself sent up a prayer for the strength and safety of those who would be participating in the fight against the forces of evil that sought always to consume the heart and mind.

Behind and around the six of us, the seven members of the hunting party that remained formed into a semi circle away from the door, prepared to lend aid and strike at the first need. While they did so, we whispered amongst ourselves quietly while each getting ready. Each of Galen, Owen, and Ian bore torches to light the way and to sear the monster’s flesh while Ben and Ray kept with their swords and shields, and Jeremy took up his rapier.

"I will head in first, follow behind and provide light; if I can draw it out to attack me, that will be the signal to attack," Ben said, stepping up to the door. He poked his head inside, but could only see the barest detail of the barn. There were stalls along either side of a central clear aisle, and a rung-ladder leading up into a loft.

With nothing immediately suspicious, he stepped boldly past the threshold, and continued deeper into the barn, followed immediately by Ray and myself to light their way. Galen followed behind me, followed by Jeremy, and last but probably not least, Ian stood by the door as rearguard.

The light from my torch alone illuminated nearly the entire interior of the barn, discounting cast shadows, and combined with Galen’s, the only pools of darkness sat in the corners and up in the loft. Ben paused by the ladder and looked up into the still shadowy loft. Knowing that the climb would put him at a disadvantage, he called up into the rafters, “Hey you! I know you’re in here!” After a second he added, “Why don’t you come down so we can have a little fun?”

I scanned the darkness, too, looking for some sign of a giant hound that was supposed to be hiding in here. It crossed my mind that the beast had run while unguarded, but for some reason that didn’t seem terribly likely to me.

In the next moment a sudden flash of insight struck me. I saw in my mind’s eye a pair of darkly glowing red eyes in the middle of a bulky shadow. The image came and went within less than a blink, but I turned quickly to face the real double of the vision, springing up from its hiding spot. Reacting quickly, thanks mostly due to the vision, I raised my left hand and called forth a thin ray of snow and frost, which leapt out and struck the massive hound in the chest with a hiss, indicating better than a warning could have that it was here. (-2 dmg)

Beside me, Galen had been lucky enough to be inspecting the pile of hay next to the beast and saw it rise to begin its attack. He too, within a moment’s notice, struck out with his magic. No sooner had my ray of cold stricken it than Galen’s own call summoned a sharp crack of electricity. This attack, however, it dodged better, leaving the blue arc to discharge into the rafters.

With a howl of rage, the hound loped down from the loft as if jumping off, pausing in the air next to me. Ben, Galen, Ian, and Jeremy, who had heard the terrifying bay of the monster just recently, felt the sound wash past their ears with no more effect than a quickening of the pulse. Ray and I, however, had to fight the sudden urge to flee into the corners and curl up into the fetal position.

The moment the Yeth Hound fell within five feet of the ground, though, Ian leapt forth as he had been preparing to do since he spotted the monster standing up in the loft with Galen and I. With quick moves, he threw himself into the battle and smote the hound in the side of the head, charring fur and dealing a powerful blow together in one hit. (-4 dmg -1 fire, Green Status) (Ian’s new initiative just before Hound)

Half-terrified, I flailed my torch before me defensively as the monster fell upon the wooden haft with its powerful jaws. The wood buckled and splintered, but the hound relinquished its hold without snapping the weapon while I tried not to contemplate how close I had been to that being my arm. (My Wartorch: -3 dmg Broken status but not destroyed [-2 to attk and damage])

With another bellowing howl of anger, the hunt was on.

Ray 17/19 (2 PP) ---- Ben 29/29 ---- Jeremy 18/18 ---- Ian 20/20 ---- Owen 9/14 (4 SP) ---- Galen 17/17 (1:4)
Ray: +1 AC, CMD, Saves (Defensive Precognition) 2/10-r
Ian: -2 AC (Charge) 1-r

Yeth Hound -- Green Status, -2 AC (Charge) 1-r

(Alright, due to the semi-staggered lay up I had us enter, the following people are in melee range of the Yeth Hound at the beginning of their turns: Ray, Ian, Galen, and myself; Ray and Ian are flanking as soon as Ray takes his first action. Ben is a 5-ft. step away from the action, which would take up the last free square to fight from, thanks to the way the stalls on either side of the aisle are set up, but don’t worry, I should be moving out of your way soon, Jeremy. I don’t remember the actual initiative order, so I can only say one thing for certain, and that is that Ian moved to the last of the six of us to go, thanks to his timely readied action. Also, for those who might be wondering, my new Forewarned ability is what you see described above. Map to Come.

Once more, I’d like to post a reminder that (in theory) I should be moving this on at the latest 3:30pm next Wednesday, with or without your contribution. Also, I’d like to note that if you can mention things that you plan to do in the rounds after the first, you can expedite the process and free yourself from having to come up with a new post before another week)

Anyway, it's great to have you back! I've still got homework, but I'll make sure to look out for possible updates I might have to run up.

Hmm... while Unicorns have that badass horn and the whole purity-healing-life-y powers, Pegasi can fly. Not to mention unicorns have that whole problem of being extremely selective (I think it was a red-haired maiden?) which might cause some problems whenever I wanted to go out riding (I've only got about half of that equation and it isn't the maiden part).

Being fed to the Demonic Vending Machine or being Grugg's dance partner?

Topic: The Day They Woke Up on the Wrong Side of Reality
Subject: Hey hey hey, It's not recycling day, but it's time we took out the trash anyway.

Dana Vaile whittled away at a small limb that was to become a torch for the hunting party of which she was a part. The day had been idle after the experiences of the previous night. She hated idling. Within short order there were one and a half dozen ready-to-use torches, enough for every member of the party to take one with spares, each one a respectable three feet in length to be better used in a melee.

This task done and with some hours before the two lads who escorted the supply wagon back to the capital returned, she went to split some of the wood that had been brought in by Brother Harrison and his crew. It being the high point of summer there was very little need for the resource, but it was one more task to do to keep her busy.

After a time she was joined by Gordon who came to inform her that the others had returned sooner than expected from Corazon. Together they finished off the pile then Dana set out for her home to make up some supper and take a short respite.

She was just tending to her small patch of vegetables, neglected in the middle of being weeded when all this madness began a few days before, when a couple of men passed her in a hurry, shouting at her that the beast had been found.

Quickly she set away her spade, gathered up her husband’s arms and followed them to town hall.

*

“We found it in a barn by one of the abandoned homesteads, not too far from the edge of town. There ain’t too many places on the plains to make yourself a den so we figured we ought to check the farmhouses as well. He’s holed up in there and it don’t look like he plans on coming out anytime soon—as soon as he howled we was out of there, expecting him to be coming right after us, but he just stayed inside and growled at us some and left us to come get you.”

Without much hesitation we set off for the barn. Albert, probably the oldest of the few of the hunting party laid out a plan for us—the six of us experienced monster hunters—to run in and try to get the monster out into the open so that everyone could get at it without having to put too many people into too small a manoeuvring space. An idea to take the whole barn down was shot down as being far too risky, even with the recent rain, and the collateral too high.

Shortly, as promised, we arrived at the barn. Its door still hung half opened where the men discovered the evil lurking within earlier. From the outside it looked inconspicuous enough, a small barn and a house in the near distance. I watched the black gap of the door while I waited for my torch to be lit, trying to catch a glimpse of what could be inside, but I couldn’t see anything, and the angle of the slowly setting sun provided no insights.

(Alright, it’s party time again, guys. Anyone who wants to pick up a torch need only mention it, or else they’ll go in with their regular gear. It should be noted that there isn’t much light in the barn and humans rather lack darkvision, so the only light we’ll get will be coming from the torch-bearers (me, so far). Torches are effectively clubs with a bit of fire damage and light on the end, so they are universally proficient. I still have 5 damage from earlier, so if Galen wants to retroactively mend my leg sometime when we were alone, that would be great, but it’s not a lot of damage to be spending a spell on. Ray’s injured, too, but not even enough to glance at.)

Ray: 18/19 with 3 PP left, Owen: 9/14 and 4 SP. Everyone else at full HP, Spells, IP, and AP (but then, Ben’s Awesome Points are unlimited anyway…). As I might not need to tell you thanks to the last battle, this monster is capable of insta-KOing anyone who happens to be hanging below the double digits, not counting (heavens forbid) a critical hit on any of us, so heals should be dished out to keep fighters out of this area and those who are below ought to stay the hell away from that things teeth (Also don’t forget that dying in 3.75 is to Con mod with Con checks to stabilize, so Ben will survive, barring some kind of major screw-up.)

I do tend to ramble in the OOC, don’t I? Let's take this trash out.
