Subject: His Glasses Astew

At that moment, the bartender strode over with three bowls of stew, using that trick that people who frequently handle plates seem to know. He lowered them onto the table in front of Karia, Vyran and Desrik, following them up with spoons from his apron pocket. He then sped off and returned bearing three rolls of bread.
An odour of broiled beef and vegetables rises from the stew, heartiness embodied... emstewed?
The bartender nodded, then headed back behind the bar.

Dom shrugged and bowed to them. "I'll let you eat then. Hope to be seeing you later," he added, winking once again to Karia. With a saucy grin he headed to the fireplace and sat down in a big armchair by the fire, opposite the grizzled old man.

"I think we were just speaking about the barkeepers daughter. No new people whatsoever."

"Oh aye?" Dominic asked, "Billie doesn't even work here, she's a clothier! Made me this fine cassock, in return for services... rendered," here he winked at Karia before continuing, "So what brings you round here? You don't seem the sort to enjoy the same leisurely activities as I."

Oh, and then that gave me an idea for a five-player version, with five different sides and piece-types; Farmers, Sailors, Merchants, Nobles and Royals.
Each of these factions has a "King" piece, two sets of different middling pieces, and a bunch of "Pawns".

Each faction has its own victory conditions, and the loss of the Leader piece doesn't mean the end of the game. If your faction loses its Leader, then you continue play, despite being unable to win. Why? To be able to sabotage other peoples' plans!

It's in the works. Gimme time on this one

Subject: Huh

I hadn't at all figured it like that. I'd got rid of the long-reach of chess pieces, and had literally gone by the one-of-each-piece idea, and had given each piece abilities (which makes it more of a strategy game than a board game, I suppose. Not that chess isn't based on strategy, but... bah, y'know what I mean)

The founding principle of this setup being, of course, having to prepare for being backstabbed at any moment.

I can't be bothered to type it all (right now) but here is basics. Names of zones and ideas are subject to change:

Win conditions: capture the opposing King, or capture the opposing Queen using a pre-determined "spy" piece, or own twice or more pieces than the opponent.

Note: for movement, differentiate between steps and moves. Steps are in one single direction, whereas a piece that moves can change direction. Also note that any number of pieces can be sacrificed on a turn, bearing in mind that you must maintain more pieces than half as many as your opponent.

Pieces:
Royal
King: one step, any direction; can promote any piece into Lord.
Queen: two steps, any direction; can promote any piece into Lady.
Prince: three steps, any direction; sacrifice to move King to Prince's square.
Noble
Lord: two steps, any direction; sacrifice to gain control of enemy Farmer for one turn.
Lady: two steps, any direction; sacrifice to gain control of enemy Lord for one turn.
Courtier: three moves, any direction; sacrifice to gain control of enemy Jester for one turn.
Higher
Priest: one step, any direction; sacrifice to resurrect any piece on starting row.
Merchant: two steps, no diagonals; sacrifice to gain control of enemy Bandit for one turn.
Mage: three steps, any direction, can jump pieces; sacrifice to destroy any non-Royal piece.
Rider: six moves, any direction; sacrifice to give another piece three extra steps/moves.
Lower
Jester: four moves, only on diagonals; sacrifice to paralyse one enemy piece for their next turn.
Guard: two moves, any direction; when adjacent to a Royal or Noble piece, the piece cannot be taken until the Guard is taken or moved.
Sailor: five steps, only on diagonals; sacrifice to paralyse enemy Merchant and Mage for one turn.
Farmer: two moves, any direction can jump pieces; sacrifice to paralyse enemy Lord and Merchant for one turn.
Bandit: three moves, any direction; sacrifice to trap one unoccupied square, which is kept secret but written down. If an enemy piece lands on the square, it is destroyed.
Goblin: four moves, any direction; sacrifice to allow Goblin eight moves instead of four, then is destroyed.

The only thing I wasn't sure about was the placing of pieces on the board other than "on the back row", but doing it in secret? Sounds fun

1) She's beginning to get hungry, as are the others. But that might not mean anything, because hunger depends on the body being used to food or lack thereof.

2) Nice idea. The adventurers are gone, by the way, so they're unlikely to help right this second.

3) Karia is correct about her being a soldier-type.

4) There were enough clothes for each of you, exactly. They were leftover scrappy clothes, hence most of it looking a bit hapdash and in bad nick. There are no leftovers.

"It looks like we have three primary goals: get our stuff back, find out who we are, and get a source of income to pay people. Good sir, what type of currency is used around here?"

"Here in Cleft, money ain't any use, as it can't be melted down and used for weaponry. We barter in useful objects or services, or duels."

"Thank you so much for helping me and my friends here in our time of need. How noble you are and your kindness will not be forgotten, Some stew would be lovely. Do you have a clergy in these parts by chance?"

The barman laughed, "The stew and room aren't 'cause I'm generous, they're to incite you to come back again. Business practices, y'see," he quickly served another patron before returning, "A clergy, y'say? Nothing of that sort I know of round here. I s'pose you could count ol' Dom..."

Karia met with her friends at a table they had bought a little bit of time but they needed to act quickly or the trail would run cold. Desrik said "This is a rather small town. I imagine a thief that is known by the tavern girl can't be hard to find...."

"Oooh, a tavern girl, y'say?" a voice piped up from behind the group, "Is she hot? Where is she?"
They turned around to spot a short, bald man in a stone grey cassock creeping up behind them, eyes gleaming with anticipation.
"I'm Dominic Richardson, Priest of the Order of the Trouser. I couldn't help but overhear you talking of a new tavern girl. Would you know anything about her?"

So, Karma. Wassit?

Since I am incapable of sending cookies to people (posting costs are ridiculous, and I don't have an oven), instead, I give a form of "score" via Karma. You can earn it by surprising me, doing awesome things, doing hilarious things, I think you get the picture. It's not like Experience Points. Think of it as a form of bonus XP.

Karma may actually have some in-game use at some point, but for now it's just a gauge of how much I'm enjoying each character's interactions and reactions.

Karia looked at the girl "Did you see what happened, or does this type of thing happen often?"

"Oh, all th'time, but not always naked. I reckon old Butterfingers went and robbed you like he did the rest, unconscious as they were. Anyway, gotta get to work, these clothes don't sew themselves," she finished with a smile, "Pop by sometime, my clothes are good, if not free." She set off in direction of one of the simple looking buildings, which they now learned was a clothier's workshop.

The group entered into the Inn.

The Falling Fool Inn was a standard tavern: with a wooden plank interior, tables scattered around a bar at the far end, and a few patrons milling around. A grizzled old man in a chair by the fireplace, an old hag with a crystal ball at the other end of the room, a soot-stained burly man and a weedy boy each with a pint of beer... three adventuring types, armed to the teeth, strode out through the door as it closed behind the four clueless new arrivals.

Karia greeted the man accepting whatever the first drink she saw was "Sir, thank you for your kindness; I humbly offer my services around your inn as repayment for these clothes..and board?"

The barman laughed as he served each of the group a tankard of ale, "The clothes were Billie's, nothin' to do with me. Welcome to Cleft! I hope the fall didn't leave you all without anything to pay for your drinks with!"

He smirked as he grabbed a used beer mug and wiped it down, considering Karia's words, before replying, "I like your way of thinking. Pragmatic, first thought on your mind being lodgings and food. Tell you what, you can have two rooms for tonight, until you find somewhere to stay, or somehow to pay. Do you want some stew, or aren't you hungry?"

Karia: +1 Karma for "Pragmatism in the line of duty."

"Well, what is the plan," Moonbeam asked the group.
"I'm not sure," Aquascales admitted," I think Assal and Tralen have planned the most."

Assal nodded, "Well, the idea was to head northwest, towards the Ruins of Athera. The sword I seek is said to be in the hands of a bandit of that region. As to the outlaw that we have also been hired to deal with, he is also apparently in that area. I suppose that we shall head steadily in that direction."

(From the "Pardinal" page of Geography of Audalis)

Hazards (The Game): A game played on a board drawn with 16 by 16 squares. There are 16 pieces, each that have there own unique movement and powers. King, Queen, Prince, Jester, Rider, Guard, Farmer, Merchant, Priest, Mage, Bandit, Goblin, Courtier, Lady, Lord, Sailor. At the start of the game, each player must declare one piece as a spy, write that piece's name on a piece of paper and place under the edge of the board. The object of the game is to either to have the only king on the board, or to have your spy piece take the opponent's queen. Grand Hazards tournaments are played in Pardinal with much wagering on winners. It is widely believed that the first covenant was won by Josyph Solstice who beat King Leo V in Hazards.

On a whim, I decided to work on a playable version of Hazards. I'll need to fiddle a lot more with it, but I think I'm nearly there.
Anyone have any suggestions as to set-up or whatnot? Before I begin posting silly ideas.

So, I'm starting up a modern/fantasy game. I've been working on it for a few months now I can't give too many details without spoiling the plotline, though, so you'll have to bear with me.

I'm looking for a bunch of players to be inhabitants of the isle of Alderney, friends of Marcel that he is currently phoning. The characters can be of any profession except the secret service, naturally. Here is a character sheet, to be sent via PM:

Player:
Name:
Appearance: a line or two about particular noticeable traits. Scars, hair, eyes, stockiness, shortness, etc.
Skills: what the character is good at. If you're not sure about it, you can always ask. Anything is allowed if justified.
Background: a little flavour to make the character interesting. Not too long, but anything that can let me slip some fun references in
Inventory: this is more about specific things than literally what the characters own. This is what they have on them, and any object of note that they might have. For example, what kind of shoes they have at home isn't very interesting, whereas the sword they have displayed on their wall should go on this list.

Anyone interested?

Note that Alderney is between the UK and France. As such, it's a very mixed culture. In the real world, it is part of the UK despite most inhabitants speaking a good amount of French. Bear this in mind, as you can have people with names like Jean-Paul Dupont who only speak English.

PROLOGUE

The year is 2010. As the sun rises into the mass of deep grey cloud overhead, a new day begins on the Channel Island of Alderney. A light rain begins to fall, pattering on the roof of the corner shop between New Town Road and the Route de Braye, in the capital of St Anne's. The bell chimes as a customer enters and shakes the extra water from her umbrella, leaning it against the front window.
The owner, Pierre, greets Cindy, and the two begin to talk. Nothing much of interest – the weather, Wendy’s new lover, Pierre’s boyfriend’s new job, the war, business... Cindy soon purchases a pint of semi-skimmed milk and leaves with a second bell chime.
Alone once more, Pierre walks over to the CD player and turns the volume up, dancing around as he mops the floor, singing loudly and knocking tins from shelves. He laughs at his clumsiness, before he sets the tins back in place and spins around in a spray of water, foxtrotting off to mop another part of the shop.

The rain continues to patter on the rooftops, and the Year 6 schoolchildren of St. Anne’s School stare at the wall upon which is projected a political map of Europe. They are bored stiff, and the teacher knows this, but the government decides on curriculum. Today they would study geography, and not anything more interesting, no matter her wishes.
“So,” she begins in an attempt to galvanise interest and interaction. “Who can name the countries on this map?”
A girl named Élodie raises her hand. Élodie is one of the few pupils who pay any attention to the lesson. The teacher ignores her for a moment, hoping that someone else would answer for a change, then sighs as she motions for the girl to speak.
“The green islands to the north-west are of Prydain, originally the country of Wales, which allied with Caledonia a long time ago and invaded their neighbours. The blue country is Frogvania. The reddish-brown one-”
“Maroon, Élodie.”
“Thanks, miss. The maroon one is Iberia, then the red one is Vatican, the orange one is North Germania, the purple one is South Germania, the pink on-” Élodie’s speech had sped up until she ran out of air, and takes a breath to continue, before the teacher stops her.
“Good, Élodie. Now tell me where we are.”
“Alderney is the top one of the little spots on the map, just north of continental Frogvania.”
“Perfect.”

The Year 5 pupils are currently learning about history, and the beginning of the Cold War and standoff between the ancient nations of Sovieta and America. They know it all already, but once again, the government’s decision on official curriculum cannot be swayed. The raindrops are fewer now, and slowly the sky clears up, revealing a backdrop of deep turquoise, three military helicopters overhead. The Alderney Air Force is on constant patrol, and there are permanently five squads in the air at any given time. Some Vaques – as are named the inhabitants of Alderney – had decried this as paranoia in the past. However, since Guernsey, Jersey and the rest of the Channel Isles were destroyed by stray missiles from both the United Republics of Eurasia and the Western Union, the AAF has been on high alert. Their base at Fort Albert is possibly the best equipped military base of the island.
“Reached Waypoint Charlie, awaiting instructions, over.”
“Confirmed. Continue to Waypoint Delta, over.”
“Roger that.”

The Alderney Naval Force is just as busy, although where the AAF and the Alderney Ground Forces are both numbered in the hundreds, the navy is composed of a mere fifty or so troops. They are based both in Braye Harbour and at Fort Houmet Herbè, to guarantee two points of defence of the island. They have ten small, yet well-equipped, ships capable of patrolling round the island in an hour at top speed.
The AGF is based in Fort Tourgis on the north side of the island, though they have a presence at Fort Albert, Fort Raz and Fort Cashlier. They are entrusted with the policing of the country, as well as its defence. At their disposal they have a few standard all-terrain cars, a pair of armoured vehicles, and one single German tank which remains from the Second World War – with a few improvements over time, naturally.
However, to the west side of the island, over a thin bridge, can be found Fort Clonque. Within that fortress can be found the secret services of the Alderney military. So secret that the organisation’s very name is unknown to the general public. Their existence, however, is public knowledge. You can’t hide something that big.
The government of Alderney meets in a tall building in the centre of the town of St Anne. A council of five members which was once elected, but since the Cold War began and Alderney took its independence from what was once the United Kingdom, the council has been composed of the top members of society: three members are delegated by the three military branches, and two are designated by their predecessor. They decide everything, from the day-to-day life of Alderney to the details of war and strategy.

Marcel Brown, a shoemaker in St Anne, runs towards his shop, narrowly avoiding crashing into an old woman from down the road. He has seen something he should not have seen – which would be commonplace, save that Marcel has not touched a spliff in well over a month. He wants to put it down to hallucinations, but he is sure he saw what he saw, and he is worried about what people will think of him. He rushes through the door, which he had forgotten to lock from the night before, and runs straight to the phone, calling anyone and everyone he trusts truly, as fast as he can, starting with the first name in his phonebook.
“Michael, you need to come to my place, tonight at six... Yes, I do know that you’re busy... Please come, I need to tell you something. Bring Cindy if you see her... I’ll tell you when you get here. It’s important.”

As if responding to their calls, a figure headed towards them from a house on the edge of the village. About twenty or so, she wore a very tasteful beige and brown ensemble, her blonde hair pulled back in a knot. In her arms was a bundle of clothes.

"Greetings to you all," she smiled, offering the clothes, "I regret to say that these clothes may not fit correctly, but I'm sure that you will not have many complaints," she apologised, all the time passing her eyes over Twig's naked form. She smirked and continued.
"My dad said to invite you to come get a drink at his tavern, the Falling Fool. First drink on the house, he says it'll draw more custom. Anyway, I've got to get back to work, so if you'll excuse me..." she finished as she gently lowered the clothing to the floor.
