Topic: Building a Castle - Costs and Concrete
Subject: Hmm...

Page 106 of the Advanced Dungeon and Dragons DMG has details pertaining to construction and sieges. It provides some general costs and times.

Otherwise, I can confirm that the Strondhold Builder's Guide from the later version may help.

Additionally, I may have a Dragon Magazine somewhere with some extra information.

Subject: TORAAD Dwarven Divinity

Toraad was engaged in animated conversation with Fredrico, making him unaware of any activity behind him. Consequently the Dwarven Cleric maintained distracted surveying the terrain to the north and south, regularly glancing either way, as the wagon master continued his determined trek to Lasch; hopefully the others spotted anything he missed.

Shortly thereafter, the journey took a drastic shift. A sudden shout of alarm from Rextugenous spurred the wagons into motion; kobolds were attacking. While Toraad knew little of the specifics the bard described in his warning, his mercenary spirit had him moving in action within an instant.

Moving around Fredrico, Toraad scanned both the Northern and Southern hills wildly, looking for the hidden enemies. A sudden tide of Kobolds emerged from the North, forcing the Cleric to react quickly. Hastily he grasped his holy symbol and gripped the side of the speeding wagon with all his might.

Steel, lend forth yer strength With a prayer, Toraad drew upon the power of his deity and pointed toward the oncoming horde.

Toraad is casting Rock-to-Sand to disrupt the path of the kobolds. Of note, he leans around the North side of the lead wagon and braces himself as Fredrico drives the wagon faster. Due to the surge, and the leaning, the spell will likely be cast at an angle cutting across the kobolds' path.

Considering that Toraad's spells are geared towards healing, protection, or up-close work, I do believe I'll be improvising with a quick Rock-to-Sand spell.

That aught to delay the kobolds for a moment as the ground alters beneath their feet and the 100ft line is nice. Though I'm not sure if it fits the situation. ...may just be a buff session....

Subject: Silent Trip

Travel had been uneventful for much of the day, a fact that, while calming for many, was concerning to Toraad. Noticing the tell-tale signs of skirmishes, the dwarf pondered the implications. Typically, bandits and raiders did not leap out significant numbers of well-armed riders, which Toraad assumed the twelve who had departed from the caravan were. No, from his experience as a mercenary Toraad knew bandits and raiders preferred laying in wait for an easy score, such as the caravan he rode in. Such knowledge left the dwarf frowning in thought as he observed the signs of their escorts passing. Either these riders were especially good at rooting out danger, or there was increased activity within these woods. Although the former was ideal, Toraad had no idea of the capabilities of those who rode before them; hopefully they could handle their own. Unfortunately, the dwarf's question was answered well before he desired.

Within the lead cart, Toraad spent most of his ride with Fredrico in silence, likely due to both of them trying to keep a sharp eye upon the road. As the day wore on however, Toraad became aware that the man was growing more and more concerned over the lack of presence of his riders, although he certainly resisted showing his care; it was surprisingly common amongst merchants, if not out of concern for their hirelings then at least out of concern for themselves and their investments. As they continued to progress, pools of blood as well as the severed limbs of goblins began to appear more frequently. The sight of the greenskins was unwelcoming to Toraad; he'd killed his share of the vile cretins in his time. Rounding another bend brought into view the presence of carrion birds, spurring Fredrico to drive the wagons faster. What they found was certainly tragic; there lay the forms of the twelve riders, surrounded by the only good goblins - dead ones.

From there the members of the caravan took the necessary measured to provide a proper funeral service - at least what Fredrico and Lars deemed appropriate. While it didn't bother him that they were burning the goblin corpses, Toraad could not help but ponder their treatment of their own, but then surfacers were a strange lot, and Toraad still had to accept that. Additionally, a remark by Lars regarding the undead before they set camp caught Toraad's attention; it seemed far too knowing.

Watch had come and gone without any incident. The vivid eyes and dark forms of wolves had been visible moving in the distance, but such was not surprising given the smell of roasted flesh that had wafted through the woods; hunters and scavengers, seeking a meal. At one point it occurred to Toraad that perhaps he should place glyphs of warding to assist in their protection, but he decided against the matter; it appeared that the greenskin forces had long since left.

Come morning, Toraad sought a place to focus his thoughts as the others prepared for breakfast. He prayed to Steel for a chance to prove his mettle as he served as a member of this company; although he had not engaged in battle with these goblins, he hoped that Steel would bless him with a chance to put down those greenskins who had slain his unknown comrades. After his meditation, Toraad moved to join the others to discuss the quiet of the night.

Subject: and by short I meant.....

Late afternoon - The Rusty Hook, Freeport

Braydyn was horrified at the thought of soaring across the room again and raised both hands; “No! No launch necessary, Cap’n,” he said, backing away a step, I belong on the ground; not up in the air, not under the waves, on the ground! panic raced through Braydyn's mind, but he managed to compose himself enough to slip away; “I can find my own way.”

As he moved towards the chaos, Braydyn looked back as Jericho spoke. “Thar be a good lad,” the man was already ushering the two wounded women and the dwarf towards the exit, “ye do tha’, mate, an’ find yer own way there, too, aye? I’ll be sure tae make it worth yer trouble…”

A bitter twist formed upon Braydyn's face as he began to scuttle in and out amidst the legs of the combatants. Worth his trouble? These brothers Hawkes had certainly added to his misfortune... though Braydyn was certain the "good Cap'n" would laugh in his face if the man heard the amount Braydyn needed to ward off the HBA.

Suddenly, Braydyn was forced to pay attention again. A low swinging fist nearly clipped his head, but the attacker was knocked aside by another drunkard who smashed a chair over his head; fragments of wood crashed all around the halfling, causing him to lose his footing as he tried to scurry away. Laying upon the floor, Braydyn had just opened his eyes when he saw a cudgel fly overhead, disappearing into the crowd. Rising, Braydyn spared a glance toward where the cudgel had come from to find the crowd suddenly parting before him; a familiar form charged past him for the second time this day, sending Braydyn diving off to the side.

At least he knew where Khash had gotten to, but he had a bad feeling about this. Despite reason, Braydyn raced after the half-orc as fast as his legs would take him.

=====================================

Launching the halfling across the room had seemed like a good idea to Khash at the time; it got the little guy out of his way, and passed word off to his brother. However, the half-orc hadn't counted on the remaining tough to be so quick to strike at him again; as he set Braydyn in motion a cudgel crashed down upon Khash's shoulder.

“Khash,” Jericho shouted over the ruckus, “Khash-mate! Et be time tae put this chum-bucket in our wake, lad! Where be ye, boy-o?!?!”

Jarek would get an answer soon enough, but Khash had business to attend to. Wheeling about, Khash saw a dark gleam in the man's eyes as the cudgel came to bare upon Khash's ribs again. It seemed the man was done being coy, the weight of the blow set into his ribs seemed more aggressive than sub-dual; at least the man hit the other side of his chest.

The two eyed each other warily, circling each other and periodically exchanging blows. While Khash was able to land some solid blows into the tough's torso, the man's armour was allowing him to resist most of the damage. Meanwhile, another drop of the cudgel upon Khash's shoulder drained all of the half-orc's amusement with the exchange; he began following the weapon rather than the man. Khash watched how the man handled the cudgel during their minor exchanges, circling each other a few more times before he acted. As the weapon came around for his ribs again, Khash brought one fist up into the man's arm and an open hand down upon the cudgel; the man's eyes widened a bit as Khash grinned, tossing the cudgel over his shoulder. Surprised at the sudden lose of his weapon, the tough started to back away, but the half-orc kept him circling; Khash wasn't done teaching a lesson. A firm punch to the face sent the man stumbling, and he tripped over his unconscious companion. A series of curses escaped his lips as he fell.

Khash began to walk away when a tankard smashed into his back. Turning he saw the man he just felled standing upon unstable legs, blood flowing out of the toughs shattered nose as readily as it did from the cut beneath his eye Braydyn had delivered earlier. The man seemed on the verge of hysterics. Spitting blood at him the tough uttered words no man would forgive.

"Ye notin but a monster" He spat again and reached for something at his belt "Son 'o a beast ana whore. Best ta put..." He didn't get to finish; whatever he had been reaching for was knocked out of his grasp as quickly as the wind escaped from his chest. A guttural snarl filled the man's ears and he felt himself moving rapidly.

In a rage brought on by the degradation of his family, Khash had let go of common sense and lunged at the man. With no regard for what the fool had been reaching for, Khash had him by the throat and began charging through the crowd aiming for the nearest wall; the combatants parted like water upon the Moon's bow. With a heavy crash the tough's back met the side of the Rusty Hook, forcing him the gasp in pain as Khash's hand pinned his throat. The half-orc's free hand hefted his mace from his belt-loop.

Braydyn came sprinting after, muttering curses about letting himself get mixed up in all this. Seeing the scene at the wall made him despise the whole situation even more; where was luck when he needed it. The man Khash had pinned was starting to go limp, the lack of air in his chest cauing him to gasp continuously. The stream of blood from the man's nose was covering his mouth, forcing him to spit ; considering his current state, Khash likely saw it as spitting in defiance. Noticing the mace about to complete its draw back, Braydyn was spurred into action. With little time to contemplate it, the halfling jumped onto Khash's arm.

Khash felt a sudden pull upon his arm and looked down, seeing Braydyn looking wide-eyed and desperate.

"Easy now big fello" Braydyn was wracking his brain for a way to end the situation and get out of here; a brawl in Freeport was one thing, but murder was another. " the Cap'n want ye ta ship out" Khash's eyes seemed to look through him, and Braydyn felt himself start to rise. No! No more soaring! I'll not be flung again! Frustrated at the half-orc's lack of response, and his sudden ascent, Braydyn kicked wildly; a boot hit Khash's injured ribs.

Sharp pain coursed through Khash's chest, forcing him to release his grip upon the tough and comfort his ribs. The man slumped to the floor, desperately heaving in breath. Reality started to return to Khash's head and he looked down, first at the man who was slinking away, then at Braydyn trying to weigh down his mace. A puzzled look crossed Khash's face as he stared at the halfling. "but ye... da cap'n... how?" He hadn't expected Braydyn to return.

Annoyed, Braydyn sighed and hopped down. "The Cap'n was movin tward the door, with the dwarf ye mentioned an' two ladies who look like they had a poor time. He wants ye ta clear out. Now." He paused as Khash put away his weapon and looked about for the door."Ye best not plan ta leave me here eithr."

That Jarek had two ladies with him relieved Khash; they must be Lyri and Wil. His brother would take care of things until he got back; he always did. For now Khash, would deal with Braydyn's complaints and exit the bar. Khash grabbed Braydyn, placing him upon his shoulder. "Well" the half-orc said amidst a rumbling chuckle despite his pain "point da way din." With that the pair headed towards the door.

Subject: Toraad, attempting conversation

The Stables of Sherrill
9am on Monday
March 12, 212awd (After Winter Dark)

"That you may friend dwarf ... that you may!"

"Then I be at yer service friend,"A grin crossed the dwarf's face as he nodded again to the bard, extending a hand forward. "Toraad G..." The sound of footsteps stopped him amidst his introduction.

Stepping aside to allow Rextugenous to attend to newcomer, Toraad briefly glanced at the caravan. Five wagons and the stagecoach he now stood beside. From his experience as a mercenary, Toraad thought the stagecoach seemed out of place, being meant only to transport persons and not cargo; perhaps the bard wished to travel in comfort. He brought his attention back to the matter at hand.

A knight had joined himself and the elf at Rextugenous' side, and the bard was now attending to others who were entering the stableyard. The bard made quick work organizing each newcomer to a wagon, although no others joined them at the stagecoach; Toraad noted that none seemed as well equipped or experienced than those that stood with him. However, Toraad made an effort not to dwell on his new-companions, and avoided looking at them for the time being; mostly he tried to restrain his eyes from narrowing at his suspicions of the elf's character. It was a natural occurrence, this distrust instilled within him from his heritage; as with previous elves Toraad had met, this one would have to prove himself.

Soon enough they were granted their initial payment and the caravan set out, however the stagecoach lingered within the stable for a moment, which Toraad deemed curious.

About a half mile outside town there was a fork in the road that split north and south. The Stagecoach was far enough behind that Toraad and the others watched each of the wagons unexpectedly veering off to the left fork to the south. When the Stagecoach reached the fork it just kept moving steadily up the northwest, instead of heading southwest with the five wagons. Thanks to his mercenary experience, Toraad was beginning to put the pieces together when the bard confirmed his suspicions; Sherrill had been a case of selective hiring. Then the bard spoke up again:

"So Now ... Let's Get Acquainted with One Another ... Shall We?"

Toraad snorted a laugh, leaning back to relax. "Aye" he started, a grin wide upon his face "we know ye be a trickster now; ye be wantin to know jus who ye be workin with." Toraad hoped that the bard would humour him, it'd been some time since the dwarf had held such company. "Well din. What would ye care ta know?"...there were parts of his story Toraad didn't care to share, those labels with which he was bared from his homeland; perhaps someday it would be appropriate.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Just as Rextugenous had stated, 3 Heavy Covered Wagons were waiting for them about 5 miles outside of town. The stagecoach dropped them off and turned to return to Sherrill. They were introduced to the drivers of the caravan before being assigned to their respective carts; Toraad would be in the lead cart as they travelled. They did not seem like harmful folks, but Toraad was used to the honeyed talk of merchants as well as the gruff ways of mercenaries; jobs came from every source.

What surprised Toraad was the scope of the cargo they were hauling; precious stones and artifacts from distant lands, but then there were also women in two of the carts. Immediately the caravan leader, Frederico, established a defence that they were not slavers. Sure'n, Toraad mused, they'd na be so forthcomin wid such facts ifin they were.

The promise of some reward for their work was a nice sentiment, but it mattered not to Toraad; the dwarf had offered his services to Rextugenous in his noble quest. This task was but a foundation stone to a grand journey.

Toraad nodded to his companions before moving with Frederico to the lead cart. In preparation for the journey he placed his pack beside him and unstrapped the javelins. After the events of the last caravan he had travelled with, Toraad wanted them ready at a moments notice.
