Matrim debated for a moment about directly heading to the office to sign out a wagon. On one hand it could get set upon his journey faster, on the other it could draw a lot of unwanted attention upon himself if he didn't speak with the innkeeper. His orders were clear on the importance of both subtly and efficiency. However things were never as simple as he hoped. Moving to enter the inn itself, he sought to acknowledge its keeper, and perhaps gain a bit more insight into this expedition or some of its 'characters' while he was at it.

Irael scolded himself for being overly satisfied when he had lit the fire. Certainly it had worked in drawing the creature out, but if his companions had not been prepared upon his return it would have meant their deaths. Having let himself get caught up in the singularity of the task, he now questioned just how vigilantly he should bind himself to a task in dire situations. He thought of Mendez and his attempted self-sacrifice and it filled him with penetrating sorrow; he still did not know the man's fate. There was much to correct for this encounter.

Seeing Danamar rise was relieving, although it was obvious that the leader was drained from the incident. Moving towards him, Irael halted realizing that their number was missing two members currently replaced by these strangers. It bothered him; he was never good with introductions.

He cleared his throat. "Sir. I shall attend to the others" Simply nodding as he departed he spared a glance at the newcomers. The knight had not acted despite his words, and now he stood there, draining Kendal's stores; disrespectful of the fallen.

Moving across the common room and up the stairs, Irael found Tariel alert and watching over the fallen Mendez. Tracing a line from one to the other told him Mendez still lived, confirmed by a slight nod from the scout. He moved forward and looked to Tariel.

"The trouble has passed. Let us get him up." He then began to gingerly lift Mendez from the floor; it was no place for so valiant, if rash, a companion.

Irael hoped his voice did not reflect the cold he felt within him. He'd need to re-double the efforts of his training to make up for this.

"...Wherever that may be, I do not know."

Bren openly scowled, shaking his head. "Then I had best find him before he gets himself killed."

Without saying anything further he turned at departed the room, surprisingly more stable than he had appeared. His new-found focus to locate the youth was enough to drive him beyond exhaustion, though his body ached. He had no ties to this place, and felt no reason to stay longer than needed to repay his debt; and by his sense, offering to protect the lives of those departing was a fair exchange.

Re-entering the city he realized he knew nothing of its layout, having originally thought all to be an illusion. He began to wander the deserted streets in hopes of some sign of the young man...

Satisfied that everyone knew their role- and ideally wouldn't run off on him- Basyl brought the prisoner closer to the camp. Keeping a firm grip on the bonds and his blade, he moved slowly and calmly, taking in the sounds around him ((listen check)).

He knew that they wanted to propose an exchange, but Basyl doubted it would go over well - first of all, how did he know they had prisoners of their own? That would be a problem the second it came up. The condition of his hostage was also a problem... in his dealings with 'respectable merchants' he often found that bartering led to the exchange of goods of equal quality...

As he began to enter the camp a thought occurred to him; a practice he was used to on board 'legitimate business' vessels. Parle. He made no effort to cover the sound of his footfalls; attention needed to be on him.

'Damn me conscience, but I canna be one to abandon the captives' the realization of just how foolhardy this was began to sink in...and his gaze shifted to his own prisoner. 'It'd make me worse than them; and Basyl To'chet does not leave folks for death or enslavement'

His resolve steeled, Basyl cleared his throat. "Ahoy!" He called with a grand boon of bravado, seeking to make his presence the fixation of all within. "I've come to speak on terms of 'Parle' with whoever be in charge." As he spoke he actively sheathed his blade, still holding the manacles firmly.

Every moment, nay, every word counted. He wanted to be in and out as quick as possible; it would have been so much simpler to attack them, but he couldn't ignore the plight of captives. He could feel the eyes draw upon him, and his legs began to itch. Blessed sisters, please protect your plaything....

((OoC: Simply put, Basyl is walking in to initiate the 'exchange' or at least how it starts; he sheathed his blade in hopes of achieving parle. Also, actions are readied to toss the prisoner forward and tumble back-left (south-west) towards the trap in the event that a) the bandits outright attack (including projectiles), or b) negotiations go south fast. Here is hoping.))

Irael had spared a quick glance at the scene before continuing to search (search check) for the means to stoke the ovens. It pained him to be unable to act directly against the creature - he was still wracking his brain for some use of his arcane ability. But orders were orders. They were exposed in the darkness... and even if he brought life to the ovens the shadow would seek to consume it instantly. If he got the flames going, he needed to time things exactly.

((OoC: continuing present course of action. If Irael finds the means to stoke the oven he will, ideally, cast Swift Expeditious Retreat to increase his movement (swift action) and light a torch (he will sling his shield upon his back or drop it) before moving to draw the creature out. If, of course it decides he is tastier than the oven... Otherwise, for now, he will continue to search for a light source))

"I agree that is not just to withhold water, yet I find it pales in comparison to starving. Friend, are you with us in finding food for the people, we will not live long at this rate. Yet, we can do something about the situation, if only a little bit."
*puts his sword away to extend a hand to the man in front of him*"The king may not be the strongest of us all, but he is trying to supply us with food as not to render us deceased to the world. Pray, join us on this most honourable mission."

Keeping his gaze upon the King, Bren slowly shook his head. "You misunderstand," his tone was flat as he addressed the man who approached his flank "I've chosen how I am to help, and it is not your goal." The voice of the man... he had been the one to address the youth... they had exchanged names. Bren wracked his weary brain in frustration. "I'll not leave the youth to the life I've lived. Nor any other who shall travel with him. That is my repayment."

He paused, trying to force the name to surface. He glared at the monarch during the entire exchange and recalled the youth's hopelessness. He replayed the voices, once assumed the whispers of spirits, in his mind.

"...Leon. Direct me to the youth known as Leon who stood in your hall, and I assure you he will survive his journey."

He heard the movements of others around him and cared not for their actions and scantly heard their words, keeping his gaze upon the ruler. Unless someone was going to direct him to the youth he was done here, but he'd give the man a final chance to speak.

So I've actually a bunch of responses set up for this. Mostly because they correspond to different outlooks/moods I've had when reading it and trying to structure a response.

First of all, the fact that it can summon up such different feeling is great. As to what they are... I've hit some phrasing issues, so ...here is an attempt to harness them:

(Gamer/geek response) Since no one else will mention it, I had a personal little geek fit over the title of the poem, and the scene described. During one reading, to which I had returned to the inn after reading some Lovecraftian works, I began to link themes to The King in Yellow. It amused me to no end, but this little thought does not diminish the feelings within the poem.

(Dark-place response) I've been through a patch of darkness the Inn has saved me from, but this work did cause me to reflect upon it. Essentially, I looked back at the beginning of what happened and remembered the build up before everything went amiss and fell apart. ...I find I place my previous relationship as the 'theatre'. Certainly there are wounds that are left open, but the reflection stimulated by the piece actually helped me come to terms with quite a few things.

(Good mood response) There are times when I read over it and can feel a sense of the unstable, of ...dramatic irony ^_^. Understanding the stage and feeling of the environment in particular, there are elements that truly reach out and grab the reader's attention into a situation that is dire, but at the same time strangely amusing. At other times I can relate the entire poem to the constant situation that is RL, as sadistic as that might sound, aha. It's fun and thought provoking.

I enjoy this piece quite a lot. Thank you Chess.

Really well written, and as they (points up) have said it is deep.

This piece hits a lot of nerves which stir some settled emotions. I'm one of those guys who bottles things up, buries it deep, and pushes it out of mind. I can completely relate to fixating upon an object, or song, or person who assists in channeling the emotions away when they rekindle, and with the feeling that there are moments when there is nothing left to do but let it all out.

Recently I've done a lot of reflecting actually....

Again, your work is sublime Chess.

Subject: Preperations, Part Rope

Hoisting Render into the tree was an easy enough task, but it surprised him just how quickly the little one disappeared among the branches.

He then gave the rope he had taken from the elf to Basyl, speaking in a low voice. "These two trees, as tight and well hidden as you can, but high enough it will work. To answer your earlier question, you need to be loud. We don't know exactly where the enemies are in camp, and it is vital they be focused on you. If things go wrong, retreat this way for support, but mind the trip line"

Basyl nodded and kept his voice at a low whisper as he crouched down. "Aye, then loud you've got. I'll take the man in, put on a show, and if it turns for the worst I'm back and diving over the wire quick as the sea is fickle. But do mind me back..." He ended on a grin, but the pause turned him serious. "Watch closely, as in I'll be needin your aid. If I'm ta not draw their attention I'll have to loop around a bit, cause while I may be swift on my feet, I'm na the quietest." He makes a brief motion towards his boots, suggesting the extra weight of the blade mechanism.

He then cast the rope about the tree and made quick work of preparing the knot. He motioned a piece the allowed a second loop to feed. "When I get about to the next tree wait for the rope to be nearly taut, then pull this line." He indicated a slack piece sitting just inside the loop. "That'd make the whole thing as stiff as a board. Aught to be to your liking."

He then doubled back a bit before rolling off to come up behind the other tree.

Subject: The Haziness Recedes... A Bit

Of all the others in the room there was one who he couldn't just ignore. A woman stood between him and the shade of a king, weapons drawn and held ready. Bren blinked in mild confusion and she was no longer there, he closed his eyes again to try to purge the dizziness and found her at his side - he could feel her weight as she attempted to keep him from collapsing.

"...you are real..." it escaped in a whisper.

He thought he heard a shout for water, and then noticed the monarch moving towards him.

"I have no solutions. I only ask that we now try our hardest," the king began, standing up from his throne, and walking deliberately towards Bren, "You are the greatest people here, and I know that you are far more capable than I."

The sound of metal upon stone echoed from the corner, and Bren blinked again to realize the figure had removed his crown.

"Do you truly think it's easy, to sit here, watching my people die, as I am forced by convention to eat my fill? A king is the centre of the people, no matter what he may wish. I am incapable of doing anything for our future, which is why I humbly ask your help."

The jug of water arrived and Bren pushed himself upright, shrugging off the woman's aid, to move and take a drink. He did not drink greedily, just enough to relive his throat. A slight rejuvenation came over him, but his body longed to rest.

"The centre of nothing is still nothing. If you truly cared you would share what you have more freely with what few subjects remain; you are casting your best away with this search, and the worst are left to rot, you'll have no one but yourself within a handful of nights." He paused for a moment, looking at the figures which remained. He knew he was being brutal, but such was the way of this world... such was the way of the waste. He barely recalled an interaction before when more stood within the hall."You are not my King, for I am not of this place, but I am not without honour. Tell me than, is there was truly a young man about to flee into the waste, and others of this quest with him? My place would best be as their guide. A repayment," He motioned towards the water. "for a few more days."

Bren looked the man - he was no greater than any other- straight in the eye. For once the visage did not seem to contort, but he could feel his eyes grow heavy. "Tell me where to find him."

Matrim knew it would take hours to get to the Great Library, and he had little desire to spend those hours amongst the dark streets of Arvale -especially coming from the dockyard. Knowing it would be best not to draw too much unnecessary attention to himself, he moved at a steady pace to the nearest 'Waystation' Tavern in order to arrange for a wagon to take him across the vast city.

There were a few important figures he needed to see before he left, but they were instructed to ensure that everything ran smoothly as well; the order of meetings was set - the Great Library was to be his first destination. Despite the urgency of the mission, he remained calm and kept his senses about him.

Basyl pushed the prisoner along the straight path Leanderia was certain of. He began to debate the point in bringing the man along; a fight could very well break out and the man would be in the way. Basyl frowned as the captive stumbled about and began to hint at their own demise; he wanted to shut him up but he couldn't kill him, he had offered him a chance at life. Though, given the way the man was holding himself as he walked, it could be a matter of time...

Valadrin signalled that he would scout ahead, so the three of them, Render, Leanderia, and himself, were moving slowly towards the camp with the captive. The blue figure was still hidden within the woods. The man had spoken little to him, and Basyl hoped he could be trusted

He could tell his two companions were getting restless, and, from what he could gather, for completely opposite reasons. Render had begun to alternate between muttering curses and chuckling, which was a tad concerning, but no more than Leanderia's fixed goal to free the captives at any cost...

Oh ye great Sisters, how you play with me. Even when I start anew I am but a pawn to you both. It was more an internal reflection than anything. He sighed heavily as he pushed the man forward, keeping his blade ready to strike just in case. May I remain an interesting piece in your great game. He had no idea how he got himself into such messes.

Valadrin returned from the darkness suddenly, the figure in blue following shortly after. He listened intently to the elf's report, keeping a tight grip upon the captive's bonds.

"Listen, all of you."

The words caught Basyl off guard, but they got his attention. It seemed the silent fellow had decided to join the team. For once Basyl held his tongue, not wishing to lose an ally's good will.

When we return we will have the rest of the rope, and some manacles, which will need to be placed on the prisoner instead of that rope, which we should use to gag him instead. We then need to take the rope and set up a tripline."

He grinned at that, glancing at the bonds he had formed so quickly. If others had the means to hold him captive, why had he done all the work? Plus, they would finally shut the bastard up.

The figure looked directly at him. "We need to someone to offer the bargain, and you seem to be our best speaker, and light enough on your feet to get away should things go wrong.

Basyl nodded in appreciation before letting out a low chuckle. "Aye, I'm your man. You need it done quick, or done loud? I think I can draw as much attention as you're aiming for no problem." He began to run the plan over in his head, and it all seemed to add up nicely...except for one thing. He doubled back on the plan, before piping up, casting a sidelong glance at Render.

"Perhaps we'd be betta off with the little one up a tree; bushes can only offer so much protection. And I think he'd rightly prefer the advantage." From what he knew, a out-of-harms-way half-pint was a happy half-pint.

"Remember, under no circumstances are we to attack first. If all goes well, we make the trade and go back. If not..... " Uryuu paused, looking at the fighter, then at the rest of the group. "Concentrate on protecting each other. Losing any person risks our mission. Now, if nobody has a complaint, we need to get to camp and back as quickly as possible."

Basyl nodded again before checking the bonds, looking at the quickest method to disable it. By the time they returned he had it mapped in his mind and quickly exchanged the rope for the manacles. Taking a few extra seconds he cut a small portion of rope and stuffed it into the man's mouth as a gag.

"Now then, just give the word and we shall set this ship a sea." He held the captive at the ready, his blade at the ready. As great as this plan was, he hoped to resolve it quickly.

This actually happened. Essentially the party was in an old 'abandoned' dungeon and they came into a room with a leaky ceiling.

DM: "As you enter the room the stench is overwhelming, along one side is a stagnant pool of water, clearly green with algae in the torchlight. The echoing sound of droplets tells you the fountain above has been leaking down here"

Goblin rouge (yeah... you can tell already I'm sure): Well I'm thirsty, I'm going to go near the pool.

DM (dumbstruck, of course, tries to be nice): "As you come closer to the pool you can tell it is especially slimy and unsafe to consume."

Goblin Rouge : I lick the slime!

Rest of group, and DM: *facepalm*

And that is when the Goblin was engulfed by the Green Slime....
