The sound of the back door opening caught Irael's attention but he dared not look, trying to keep the darkness at bay with the floating lanterns he'd conjured. The following light however, changed everything. Irael could but trace the rush of black as it departed the corner and charged the innkeeper. His illumination had been useless, and the man's scream now echoed in his mind.

He watched is shock with the others as the form moved across to the opposite corner, and then as the husk of the innkeeper fell out of it. He cursed his inability to react faster.

He started to run through what arcane ability he could muster, looking for a solution - for a course of action. Suddenly his thoughts were interrupted by the stranger offering to use himself as bait, which was immediately followed my Mendez' outburst.

“It is a shadow dread… I can not let more harm come to those here.” Those words struck Irael. He wracked his mind to recall such a creature, but again his thoughts were broken by Mendez' actions.

The sight of flame upon Mendez's fingertips told Irael exactly what his plan was, but it spurned him. He had vowed to protect his companions- they were his family- if only he could be the one to offer such a chance. However, he had no means to conjure fire. He glimpsed a look of heartfelt determination upon Mendez' face as the mage turned and dashed beyond his allies' reach.

Grimly advancing he stopped short of Danamar.

"Orders sir?"

Bren's laughter was cut off by the interruption of another voice."Sir, go to the castle. The king will want to see you,"

Bren blinked in shear confusion. Castle?....King? He must truly be in a delusional fantasy brought on from exposure... but the voices seemed so real. Lifting his gaze from the ground he just caught a glimpse of a man swiftly moving away.

Mustering up his remaining strength Bren pushed off of his sword to return to standing. He had to wipe away the grime from his eyes before he could see clearly - and the view struck home. The buildings he had first thought were neat and organized were actually crumbling masses that appeared abandoned, and the man nearby- presumably the first to notice him - seemed to be suffering the full effects of the waste despite his shelter. Either this was real, or his tiring mind was cruel in regards to details.

Scanning the heights of the buildings, Bren looked for the largest, fanciest appearing one. He'd only ever heard of castles in the stories of his youth... but there was one that seemed close to their description- even in this state of disrepair. Tightening his grip on his blade he began to head towards it.

Why anyway would want to see him -especially where he had just arrived- baffled him, and Bren had his own questions.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to establish watches, but there is a time and place. As seen in the game, Leanderia and Basyl are planning to go fight bandits.

If anything my only thought about camp right now is my stuff is fine up the tree, lets go. Return here later to get our supplies. Heck, throw your supplies up the tree with mine. We have adventuring to do.

Topic: The Last Blade Game
Subject: That cannot be real....

Bren Asera had seen nothing but rolling wasteland for two days. It was by no means unusual but nothing had stirred in his passing - the emptiness remained empty. The heat must have been getting to him. It was strange that he had not be set upon by some manner of creature as he struggled to keep going on; he'd run out of water in the morning cleaning wounds upon his forearms, now tightly wrapped in cloth.

His torn clothing billowed in the wind, his mother's amulet swinging in the bone-chilling cold. Each time it rebounded off his chest was like another shock back to reality. There would be no hope for his survival if he kept losing his focus.

He stared down for a moment at his sword, still encrusted with the blood of some beast. It had served him well, this extension of himself, but his limbs were growing tired. He knew not how much longer he could fight. If only he had found his mentor...

Rising the hill took more effort than Bren had expected. He took a moment to adjust the cloth that kept the sweat off his brow and dirt from his eyes. What truly shocked him was the structure he could make out in the distance, maybe half a days journey. How it could be standing was beyond him, and he soon came to the conclusion that the heat was actively playing upon his mind. He had nothing to lose in investigating it though; if it was real perhaps the walls could shelter him- perhaps there was water.

With the sun hard upon his back, and the wind ripping across his body he tried to make his way onward. On various occasions his footing faltered- casting him to the ground, and each time he expected it to be his final moment. Gradually he approached the fortress, making out more and more wear upon its walls and structures. Surely it was as empty and barren as the rest of this blighted place- it would vanish and leave him amongst more dirt when he arrived. But regardless he continued to venture onwards, toward the gate just coming into view.

To his surprise the walls looked more realistic as he approached, the waviness he had seen before disappearing with the fading sunlight. Even more of a shock was the feeling of wood as he threw his weight against the large gate, grinding it open.

Laughing in disbelief he stumbled inside to see many smaller buildings arranged neatly. He strode in further, sliding his hand across the stone walls until his legs gave way. He fell to his knees and leaned upon his blade, his senses failing him. Laughter took him again as he heard a voice in the distance.

"Guards! Someone! Anyone! Where did he come from?"

Topic: Debate: Spell Immunities
Subject: The Key is In the Method

There is always going to be a debate when using items of such caliber. However it is a matter of how you set it up that makes the difference.

Say for instance that throughout the dungeons there are tests that challenge the heroes mettle, in mind and body. Perhaps there are events that could weaken the resolve of the Paladin, or risk him becoming fallen - a separation from the strength from his faith. If such a gap was then taken advantage upon, then sure the book could work.

However, if the player continues to pass the tests and maintain their vigilant service to their deity than they do not deserve to become possession bait. Send the book after another party member who is 'more corrupt'.

Just musing here. The story-telling must account for the role-playing; not just the assumption that every holy warrior is of same resolve.

Topic: Forgotten Realms: Edge of Darkness
Subject: Reality to Basyl: Time to Calm Down

Basyl had tumbled off to the side with ease, but as he came out of his roll he noticed movement from his downed foe. 'The damnable fool doesn't know when to quit'. Quickly he turned back, tracing death with his rapier as he brought it upon the man. He hadn't accounted for the shield. No one used those personal anchors at sea, they distorted movement, and Basyl had not expected the man to be able to raise it so swiftly. Within seconds that costly error had his attack knocked aside as the man prepared to rush him, his axe swinging furiously. Luckily for Basyl the man could not match him for footwork, and the aggressive swing left him wide open. With a deft motion Basyl guided his blade straight toward this weak spot, running him through. Basyl saw the shock followed by the distance in his eyes; there would be no more from him.

A quick twist of his rapier slid the man off of it. 'As you would have it fair Maiden, the luck of another for my own' Basyl had given him a chance leaving him upon the ground. He had sought to... Swiftblade! He hoped he wasn't too late. Turning his gaze he watched as the woman cut down the elven threat to Render. 'My isn't she a feisty one...' He frowned suddenly, the cheeky thought turning serious '...and doing better for the half-pint than he had for her' . There would be a time to settle things with the Halfling later. He cast his gaze about the clearing as silence returned. A sigh of relief escaped him and he began to calm himself.

"I want to thank you for your assistance in dispatching these roughians. Most assuredly, I could not have done so without your help. I fear, however, that I must again plead with you for further assistance. You see, these were only a mere four men of the 12 that captured me and the couple I was traveling with. They have them still as well as their child who is not more than a few months old. They are vile men without so much as a meager wisp of a moral compass and will surely cause them grave harm; if they have not already done so. Please, I beg of you, aid me in my attempt to free them of these filthy creatures.”

Brushing his hair back from in front his eyes, Basyl took a step forward sheathing his blade-there was little point in cleaning it now- and cutting into a sweeping bow."Basyl To'chet, at your service m'lady." He speaks clearly, with sincerity in his voice.

Coming back up from his bow, his appearance was easier to make out. Sturdy burgundy breeches tucked into thick dark-brown boots that rose mid-way to his knees. A similarly dark-brown vest worked to contain the ruffles of his white shirt that ended with laced cuffs. The fading light did little to highlight the tan he'd earned from two decades upon the sea, but also shadowed the scar running across his check. Standing taller than the girl, his medium-length hair was loose and out of order- causing him to move it again before he spoke.

"Allow me to help put a stop to these fiends." He did not bother to include the others in his statement- he would not drag them further if they did not share his thoughts. But surely they would see the importance in this. To the side he could see that Valandril was attending to the fallen elf. The sisters had a cruel sense of humor, giving the elf reason to be at odds with the girl... it should have been him...

Finishing his speech, Basyl moves toward the wounded bandit leader, kicking his weapon and shield aside. Having yet to retract the dagger protruding from his boot he places it upon the mans chest, the tip of the blade near his nose. "Looks to me you've been lucky so far." There was a tinge of disgust marring Basyl's voice. The sight of the man sickened him. "If the family is unharmed ye may be luckier yet. You'll be leading the way; I expect no argument."

A thought occurred to him. "Render!" he called suddenly "Be a pal and fetch my rope from up in the tree"

Tried out the demo and the mechanics seemed terrible. (360) Couldn't enjoy myself.

I've been waiting for the verdict, and it is good to see I wasn't alone in finding its flaws.

It looks good so far, and has interesting mechanics. I like the concepts of the setting, and, as stated below, there are a few trait references that tripped me up as well.

I wonder if you could expand a bit upon your spell creation ideas. As that has intrigued me for this setting.

All in all, very well done. I look forward to seeing how it develops.

The process of railroading is sometimes necessary. I remember the one 4e game I dm'd I had the party try to steal a kings crown. He was a corrupt sorcceror king though and nearly killed two of them before they leapt upon a magic disk and floated down, with lightning scorching their backsides. scared the daylights out of them cause they assumed they were invincible because they were PC's.
