Subject: Marching Orders

I'm good with Olan's suggestion for marching orders, though we may want to move Tann's character closer to the front if he is to be checking for traps and such. If need be, Kadrin can be the rear guard, though he'll grumble a bunch about it.

Pretty much has everything that the books have in them all in one handy hyperlinked location.

Enjoy!

Roger,
Were you being serious about the dice rolls?
I usually do trust those things to the DM... believing that he wants to "create a great story, not to kill everyone in the room."

Subject: Having just watched 300

I'd say it looks like they are using heavy shields.

Topic: Tower Shields
Subject: Looking further

It would appear that the Roman Legionnry would in fact use their shield as a punching weapon... though the 3.5 Tower Shield does not allow it... so, three options, I suppose:

1) Use the Heavy Shield instead of the Tower Shield, and just call it a Scutum. This would seem like the simplest solution. While you lose the extra +2 AC and the option to use your shield for (limited) total cover, it does allow you to use the Shield feats without having to bend the rules. If I were to be making a Roman Legionary character, I would likely go this route. One feat to check out would be Shield Block, which allows you to deflect one missile attack per round, making your heavy shield more like a tower shield

2) Use the Tower Shield, and only pick up the defensive Shield feats, like Shield Specialization, Shield Ward, Active Shield Defense, Shield Wall, and the tactical feat Formation Expert. You can't punch with a tower shield, which is unfortunate... but if you love it, then who cares. As he advances, I'd probably look at getting him mithral breastplate and mithral tower shield.

3) Bend the rules or add to them. Create an additional Tower Shield Bash feat which requires Improved Shield Bash as a prerequisite. Or allow the character to make bash attacks if they have a STR of 15+.

Subject: I understand that

What I am saying is that a legionaire would not swim, sneak, or climb... he's a legionaire. What he does is wade into a battlefield with his shield buddies and kick butt.
That's what he's bred to do.

What I am saying is that if you choose to play a legionaire, you are saying yes to somethings, and no to others. Can you make a decent legionaire fighter using a tower shield? Sure... though, like every game, it depends on the type of game you are playing... and a little bit on the make-up of the rest of the players. The legionaire character (game mechanics wise) is a pretty specialized fighter.

Topic: 3.5 rules Question
Subject: 3.5 nope, 2e yes

2e edition had this, a weapon's speed factor, the various weapons adding different modifiers to your initiative roll. You could probably just adopt that model if you want that kind of realism in your game. Though, having played both, I prefer the stream-lining in 3.5 in this regard.

Subject: Not so bad

I'm not sure the penalties are so bad for what you are getting (+4 bonus to AC and the ability to gain total cover)... plus the armor check penalty only applies when you are actually wielding it. I imagine most legion soldiers didn't try to swim, sneak, or climb while holding on to their tower shields.

Making the shield of masterwork quality would decrease the armor check by 1. Making it out of mithral would decrease the armor check some more and raise the DEX max modifier.

I think a player and DM could probably work out some feats that would improve the fighting style of using a tower shield. A feat that would allow someone to use the shield to gain cover and attack in the same round, probably with some prerequisites (like Shield Ward, maybe) or restrictions (like you can only attack and use cover when attacking with a spear).

Olan and Eol, no going rogue on us.

I'd hate to have to use my 2P2D token after fighting combo a demon possessed knight and war mage.

Curious as to the start date?
I'm crazy-busy with work/home for the next two weeks (ending around Nov 2), though I should probably be able to put up at least 1 post.

What a really neat game concept!

Is this a rule-based game, or free-form kind of thing?

Are you able to talk a little more about the three "ages" the players will be working through?

I'm not sure I have the time for the game... do you have an idea of how often you'd like players to post to the game? (i.e. 1x/week? 2x/week? everyday? etc)

Thanks! And welcome to the Inn!

Do our characters get bonus non-weapon proficiencies for high intelligence (in addition to bonus languages)?

Subject: Yippie-ki-yay, *************!

Well, the dice roller says that Tann's, Eol's, Mine, Hammer's and Nimu's characters all die. And after we use up our 2P2D card... Hammer and my character still die. :-/

Well, you know what they say --> Y.O.L.T.

(Rest in) Peace,
Ayrn

p.s. Has anyone played "Kingdom Rush"? I think I may have my character use the quote lines from the dwarves in that game.

"Rest in pieces!"
"Want some? Get some!"
"Hail to the king, baby!"
"Say hello to my little friend."
"Yippie-ki-yay, ************!"

Should be fun!

Warrior or Mage?

I've got a Drawf Fighter (or Paladin, if you want something different).

But I could put together a mage instead if you prefer.

Let me know.

Subject: Question...

What are the walls made from?

Looking at the map here, I'm curious what the space looks like behind the north and south portals in this area.

What if we hacked through a wall and checked it out? (It's probably nothing, I know... so, if you guys don't think that idea is worth the time, no worries... we can move on)

Regarding our present situation, are your PCs hanging around long enough to let (at least) Wembley search the room? or are your PCs telling Wembley to leave it, because we're moving on? Either way is fine by me.

(Alacrity, if we're not sticking around to do a real search of the room, can Wembley at least pick up all the papers on the floor and look at them at a later time?)

As far as portals go, Wembley's choice would be to go... east. Though, if someone suggests a different portal, he'll think that idea is just as good and go with his companion's suggestion.

Peace,
Ayrn

Subject: I'm also interested...

I know it said 5 players on the front page, so you're definitely over that.

But if you're taking on more than 5, I'm interested. I have a concept for a religious warrior (Straight Fighter, Paladin, or Fighter/Cleric), but I could whip up a mage or Mage/Thief if you like.

Let me know if you want another character.

Subject: Mr Dressup?

Wembley scurried into the room once the door had been beaten down. Looking over at the corpse, he remarked, "Poor guy. I wonder how long he was hiding out in here."

Upon finding the note, the cidal continued, "Hmmm, well, I guess his master hasn't been down here yet."

Wembley pondered the note some more as he searched the corpse, the other papers on the floors, and the chests, adding, "I wonder what made him sick?"
