Topic: The Monster Hunters Collective - A 3.5 Audalis game looking for one more player
Subject: Me too

I'd love to lay claim on the final spot. A cleric (Khord or Human) or druid (Syl or Human) for me. I'll send more info tomorrow.

Topic: Debate: Spell Immunities
Subject: I wouldn't call it cheating, frustrating maybe

I don't think it's cheating so much. I find possession to be super frustrating as a player any time of the day, regardless of the source. And I think that is the difference between evil book that possesses even paladins and giving ghouls amulets vs turning. There's another way around ghouls besides turning.

So two things, I guess...

I think it would be fine if:

1) Provide a way around the possession possibility? Maybe something simple that would seem too easy? (like washing your hands in holy water each day... or, maybe, the opposite... you need to wash your hands in putrid swamp water each day to avoid the power of the book?)

2) Where's the fun in this? DM's cheat all the time (at least I do), fudging numbers and rolls, usually in the name of fun. I trying to find the fun in seeing my paladin possessed by a terrible evil... it's not coming to me. It would be like using a "powerful" sleep dart to overcome my elf's immunity to magical sleep effects. At the bare minimum, I'd at least give the paladin a significant bonus to save against the possession.

Olan,
I'll pipe in and say I'd be interested in playing a mage character... maybe Ayrn himself?
Though, that being said, I'd like to let newer members have first dibs.
Thanks!

Where abouts in Audalis is this adventure taking place? (If this information is found in the first post, forgive me for not reading well)

Hurray for new DM post!

Tek: Can you give us a simple map of the scenerio? (and I do mean simple)

Kaelyn: What if we tried to pin him instead? Wrestle him, get him in a bear hug and snap him like a twig? Or you pin him and I stab him (I promise I won't miss )

I won't be around next week, and I don't have time for a post, but Tobias will switch to using his dagger (he still has one, yes? or does Kammy have it?), getting inside the blind foe's guard and looking to stab the man in his sword arm, his neck, or his legs. If it's possible, he'd love to bash the man's sword arm into the wall with his shield and pin it there.

Subject: Level or XP

Olan,

Roughly what level (or XP) are you thinking this game will play at? It will probably be easier for your players to develop a concept if they have an idea of what level they will be playing. (i.e. are they 1st level apprentices? 3rd level novices? 6th level experts? 10th level masters?

What are you thinking?

Topic: Hear me out on this.....
Subject: Great idea.

I think this is a great idea. And I think it would be quite doable. I think the Chat program is reliable enough now to make it happen.

Two ways to go about it:

1) Gather a group of players/DM who are willing to commit to meeting regularly for a specific length of time (i.e. Mondays, 8 PM - 11 PM EST). This would run almost like a table top group.

2) I'm not sure how to run it, but the idea of a "pick-up" game of DnD is a really neat one too. For this type of game, I would imagine the DM would still have to commit to being online at a regularly scheduled time (which you would advertise, likely weekly to remind the community). The DM would also be required to create a number of "ready-to-go" PCs, which players could just jump into. You could keep the PCs together on a separate thread which players could refer to. I'm not sure about the type of game you could run, but checking out WotC's site might be really helpful in this regard.

One thing that will be required is to lay out some ground rules regarding exceptable play on the Chat. The rules should contain (at a bare minimum) sections containing dice rolling, IC and OOC posting, language and "flaming", etc. These rules could also be kept in the same thread as the character sheets.

What's the posting rate for the game?
And can I edit the character a bit? (i.e. mess with the mechanics bit of the character while leaving the character basically in tact?

Let me know.

Celeste, please don't feel like you need to be on door duty. I know Tobias can be a bit patronizing, but he means well.

Steelight, time to bring your curious ass in here and stick it to the man!

Kaeyln, dude, I hope you are feeling better soon!

Tek, in case you missed it, I believe Kaelyn is also out of commission until further notice.

Topic: The Search for Tomorrow
Subject: Who invited ugly?

In the excitement of finding the prisoners, Tobias had forgotten all about strategy... forgotten all about tactics. The sound of the man's voice behind him raised the hairs on his neck. "Going my way?" the man sneered.

Tobias spun around, glad that Fortune had not put a crossbow in the man's hands. I should have left Kresimir in the other hallway to keep watch! Come on, man. That's just basic training.

The man continued to taunt the elven lass, while the ex-templar regained his composure. Even as their foe drew steel and made his approach, Tobias moved with speed to engage. Passing the keys to the elven woman as he moved into position, he gave quick instructions, "See if you can get the door open."

Now, if I can just shoot around my big friend, Tobias thought, as he took aim at their foe with his crossbow. Damn it! Korviss, now would be a great time to join us!

OOC: Not sure what behaviour I'd call this, but here's what I hope to do over the next couple rounds...

This round: Pass keys to Kam, take a shot at the enemy with the crossbow (drop crossbow). If this seemed next to impossible with Kresimir in front of Tobias, then Tobias will just move in engage in melee combat, dropping the crossbow and drawing steel as he does. Attack!

Next round: Draw sword while moving to engage enemy in melee, engage in melee

Rounds following: Try to set up the advantage by moving into position to flank the enemy with Kresimir, engage in melee. If Tobias catches Korviss entering into the fray, moving in such a way to allow the Raslan in on the attack fun as well.

So... "Ranged", then a mix of "Press The Advantage", "Support Party Member: Flanking", and "From Every Angle: Find Blind Spot"? Something like that.

Scout, Swashbuckler, Ninja and Rogue?!
AWESOME!

Who cares about that arcane stuff? That's what the DM is for, to create a gaming environment for the characters at the table.

I think this group would be super interesting. In combat, I could see all sorts of combinations and situations arising.

No healing spells? Bah... that's what an NPC is for!

Topic: "Forgotten Realms: Edge of Darkness" Recruitment!
Subject: Some suggestions

Here's some ideas, Tuned-Out (and others), for some characters that might work for this adventure. Enjoy!

A human swashbuckler, a mariner by trade from Zazesspur, looking for "safer" employment than the dangers presented from life at sea. S/he is an expert swordsman, skilled with a rapier and dagger (or dual short swords).

A human (or elven) druid from Mosstone, who serves the Druids of the Grove. S/he has been assigned to this band of adventurers by the Druids out of concern for the people and to protect the interests of the Druids. A badger, eagle, owl, or wolf serves as his/her companion.

A human cleric or paladin of Ilmater or Tyr, sent by his/her local congregation to help those living out of the fringe. Primarily concerned for the welfare of the people, s/he sees pushing out the encroaching monsters and brigands as a way to pursue his/her main goal.

A human paladin or cleric (or fighter, I suppose) of Helm or Torm, attached to this group of adventurers because the goals of his/her diety and church line up with the goals of this adventure -- defend the line! Vanquishing evil and protecting the people is at the center of what this person is all about. Depending on the type of adventure, perhaps focusing on mounted combat as one of Tethyr's newest knights. (Check with the DM... if the adventure is going to be mostly underground or center around areas where your mount won't be of much use, focusing on mounted combat won't be much fun.)

A human or dwarven (or halfling) craftsman/merchant (rogue), with skills in a craft (woodworking and locksmithing to make the cool chest), open locks and disable devises, diplomacy and bluffing, and maybe some athletic skills (climbing, jumping, riding).

A stout dwarven mercenary (maybe a fighter, maybe a berserking "barbarian") from the Starspire Mountains. With the civil war over, he's just looking for work and some heads to lop off.

A profit minded halfling (or human) adventurer (rogue or beguiler) who sees this adventure as a way to make some real coin... who knows, maybe there is unclaimed treasure to be found amongst these long forsaken keeps and forts?

A human wizard (or sorcerer) from Darromar, sent out as one of the Queen's representatives (or representing the interests of one of the colleges in the city). S/he is tasked to make a careful search for a specific item believed to be lost somewhere near the area in which the PCs will be adventuring. (check with the DM about this one as it will require the DM to somehow tie it in to their plans for the game.)

Good point about not introducing our characters... I think referencing them as you did was great.

Sometimes I think I wonder how it would play out in real life. The party has just come out of combat, finds a prisoner (and Mithy elf, no less), and right away under attack again. Would we take the time to introduce ourselves? This is what I love about RP!

Great posts so far, friends! Steelight! Post up!

Starting next week, I'm away on work trips every other week, until the second week in August. Then in mid-late August, we're expecting our next child, and then September rolls around and that's actually my busiest month of the year at work.

Topic: "Forgotten Realms: Edge of Darkness" Recruitment!
Subject: How long?

1) How long of a run will this game be? (or at least this adventure?) Just for the summer? Until Christmas? 1 year commitment? What's your rough estimate?

2) How many levels will the characters likely gain over the course of this adventure? How quickly do you see them advancing? (every month, every 2 - 3 months?)

3) How many game updates will there be per week? Will they be regular? (like, every Tuesday and Saturday?)

4) How consistent do you imagine being? Do you have a busy season at work coming up? Papers/exams? Vacation time? Anything that you imagine will keep you from posting regularly?

and, finally...

5) What will you do if a player has not posted by the time of the regular update? Will you wait for the player to post? NPC the character? Make bad things happen to the character?

Thanks!

Topic: The Search for Tomorrow Q/A
Subject: Not "trapped" ... well... not yet at least

My understanding is that the only "obvious" way out of the crypt is back down the same corridor we came in.

My concern is that, if we spend the time exporing the crypt and don't come up with an alternative exit, we risk those bad guys breaking through our barricade and trapping us in the crypt.

My suggestion is that we leave the crypt by way of the corridor, hope the bad guys are still trying to break through the barricade, and hustle over to the door in the cell room that we never opened.

That is where we are at, I think. For sure, the character can explore/ransack the crypt for knowledge and other treasures... it just might mean we get trapped in the crypt. I'm asking if you all have considered the risk and if you think it is worth it? Tobias wouldn't... but I could see Nick being intrigued by the knowledge one might find.

Anyway... that's my two cents... peace!

Subject: Not the way out...

Tobias cursed their luck as it became clear that there was no way through this passage. The fact that they had stumbled into a tomb left him with a darker, ominous feeling. Death by the death brigide in the place of the dead...

"I have no desire to lie here with the dead," piped in Tobias. "And we have not the time today to explore the meaning... there's too much at stake. Let's get to the door in the cell room. Hopefully, we'll still have time to make our exit before this place is swarming with death."

The ex-templar didn't wait for the others to follow his lead (though he hoped their would). He was worried their foes at the store room door, fearfully that they had made their way in already. He double-timed it back to the end of the corridor, but stopped just prior to entering the store room, peeking in to check the status of the barricaded door. His acquired crossbow was ready if necessary to shoot down his foes.
