Subject: A lock! How insulting!

The cidal, Wembley, was all ready to help himself to Dudley's offer of food. The fact that many of the others seemed disinterested in the offering seemed all the better to the Pick. But Wembley's ears perked up when Crow spoke up about the lock on the cabinet, his own hunger suddenly on hold.

"A lock?" he questioned in his shrill voice. His hands were already working out his tools. "My great gran always used to say, 'A lock insults the purpose of a door.' And we can't have that."

Turning his attention to the lock, Wembley spoke tenderly to the door, "Don't worry, little door. I'm about to set you free!"

OOC:Wembley attempts to pick the lock.

Wembley watched in amazement as the little cleric was zapped by the little watermelon of cleaning power.

"Bolts and bubbles!" the little rogue shouted. "Did you see that? Probably some Brathunspar tinker's invention... I bet, if the professor were here, he could tell us how it worked."

Turning towards the strange and magical device, Wembley moved closer, filled with wonder. "Oh! oh! Do me next! Do me!"

Subject: The company we keep

It didn't take long for Wembley to meet and greet the remaining survivors. While MaryAnn and the professor were nowhere to be found, the lucky stars did seem to shine down on him as his kin, Dudley, had been spared. He was glad to find the little priest... gladder still to find the cleric had a backpack full of food. Those Loavens... always thinking ahead. Wembley stared down at his spellbook, wishing hard that it would turn into a backpack of ham and cheese, wine and bread.

Well, the little rogue sighed, looking again at his kin, perhaps he'll share.

There was a Khord on the island too... Take the good with the bad, Wembley thought, glancing sideways at the stout cleric. He seemed friendly enough, though a bit too fanatical for his liking. Still, if the Khord could call in a special favour with his diety and get them all a little more sunshine, Wembley would most undoubtably be most devoted to Solanis... at least for the day.

The sigie swashbuckler had landed as well. Of all that remained, Mal was likely Wembley's favourite... his confident carefree lifestyle were Wembley's values as well.

The two Syls had made it. Wembley saddled up to the Syl mage, "Alan, right? Remember me? The dabbling cid from the Brynnandells? Oh, am I so glad to see that you made it. Now we can finish that story I was telling you about the other day. Remember? I was about to tell about the time I escaped from a orc raid party. Oh, you should have seen it... that pair of brown bears I conjured up was a work of art."

"Anyone else cold?" Wembley interrupted himself, shivering. "I could really use some shelter."

As luck would have it, almost at that exact moment, the group stumbled upon the strange door at the center of the island. "Ah, here we go."

Opening the door, and descending further, Wembley found himself with another door. "I'll open it."

Alan wanted to know who was leading the group. Quickly, the cidal rogue piped up, "I'll lead this party! Oh! Oh! Pick me, Alan! Pick me! I can do it!"

OOC: Alan = Alondas.

Thanks for that, Al! Like I said, I'm looking forward to this. I do wish I had thought ahead, though, and put "Ginger and MaryAnn" as one of my three random things on the beach. That would have been a real treasure.

I'll be away on vacation Nov 5 - Nov 12. I'm not sure if the cottage will have wi-fi. Otherwise, I'll be around until just before Christmas. And then back again in January.

At one update per week, do you have a rough idea how long in RL this adventure will take to complete. About a year or so? 3 - 5 major encounters with roughly 6 or so updates per encounter, plus the updates to move the story to the encounters.

I ask this only so that we have a good sense of the game commitment. I know I can be flaky, but I really would love to be part of a game that actually completes a whole adventure.

Looking forward to this!

Subject: Looking for Mary Ann and Ginger...

Wembly's first remembrance of the island was he violent gagging, as his body coughed and sputtered, trying to free the gallon of seawater he had choked down. "bhl-bhl-bleh-bleh!" And with that, Wembly's last meal joined forces with the sea water and was splayed out across the desolate shoreline.

Through sheer force of will, the cidal pushed his eyelids open, the sting of salt water and grit causing large tears to flow down his cheeks. A sudden wave of surf lifted the pitiful creature and tossed him further ashore. He coughed and sputtered again. Get up! he commanded his muscles to move.

It is debatable whether a more sad and pathetic image has been seen on the face of Audalis than that of the waterlogged cidal rising up from the beach. His lustrous chestnut hair hung limp and matted around his face and neck. Long gone was the leather tie that had held his hair back in a glorious topknot. Sand, seagrass and seafoam clung to his damp clothes, which suctioned ungracefully to his drenched body, revealing his small, thin frame.

"Dolphins and devilfish!" Wembly exclaimed, shaking himself much like a wet hound coming in from a thundershower. He looked out over the sea. "Ha! That was some storm, Sea Queen! It will make for an excellent tale around a fire"

Wembly paused, taking the land on which he stood. "A fire would be most excellent right now." His thought with a shiver. Scattered across the shoreline, he could see shapes of other adventurers who had made the journey as well. With hopeful anticipation, the cidal made his way over to the others. "I sure hope Mary Ann and that professor made it."

Hey Everyone,

I just wanted to say that I would also be okay with playing a straight up mage. I was thinking that the opening plot line of this story would work well for me to bring back my namesake character -- Ayrn the conjuring witch (warlock) from Bayris. This could be the storyline of his first adventure from his home city.

Anyway, just wanted to put that out there in case one of you would like to pick up the thief/rogue role. (Aryn, I know you mentioned something about a Cidal Rogue...)

Peace,
Ayrn

Hey Al,
I'm still in B-town, and I have a friend in Georgetown who might be willing to play too (as long as you can handle dry humor and lots of puns, my friend's a decent guy)
I wouldn't be able to do table-top more than once/month... and, truth is, except DMing with my own kids, I haven't been a player at a RPG table for probably a decade.
Anyway, let me know if your interested and maybe we can set something up.

Topic: Have You Played 13th Age RPG?
Subject: Just picked it up

With only a quick run-through of the book, I like the streamlining of game mechanics.

A couple of notes:

1) This is a heroic fantasy game. If you like gritty, low powered games where your "heroes" are average people, the rules would need some tweeking.

2) Because skills are more loosely defined by a character's background, you would need to trust your DM (or, as DM, your players). If you don't, I could see some arguments occurring over whether or not a character's background actually applying to the situation/skill check at hand.

3) There's less opportunity to powergame. For sure, putting together certain combinations of feats and class abilities might help min/max a character, there's less opportunity for number crunching and tricking out your character. The core rules also don't have rules to cover multi-classing, so "cherry-picking" classes is out (though, the book promises a future supplement that will explain multi-classing)

4) Gaining new abilities after each session is rewarding for people who have short attention spans (like me).

5) The system definitely pushes the game to be more story/plot hook driven, using the characters' relationships with the world powers, their backgrounds, and their "unique" trait to influence and guide the story. Even the "fail forward" idea places an emphasis on how the characters' actions affect the future on their story.

6) Instead of spending a lot of time doing number crunching with skill points and such during character creation, players are definitely encouraged to invest their time in creating backgrounds for their characters.

All in all, looks like my kind of game... streamlined combat, neat class abilities, and a focus on story/roleplaying is my cup of tea. It would be interesting to try and develop some Icons for the Audalis campaign setting.

Hi again, Dragoon,

I did a little online google searching. I believe you are talking about the D&D Basic Rules Set. In the basic rules set "CN" stands for "coins" and is the measurement unit they use for encumbrance.

For conversion purposes, 1 coin equal 1/10 of a pound (or 10 coins equals 1 lb). Page 32 states, that a character starts with the basic encumbrance of 300 cn without armor. If the character adds armor, their encumbrance jumps up to 700 cn, which means their speed is decreased.

I know you asked folks to email you back... but this is the best I can do at the moment. Hope you have a chance to come back!

Hey Dragoon, welcome to the Inn.

I'm not familiar with the "series 1 generation 1" rulebook you mentioned. Usually in DnD "CN" is the shorthand for "Chaotic Neutral", one of 9 "alignments" that your character might choose.

If you can, could you describe the book a bit more... i.e. which rule system is the book (4thE DnD, 3.x DnD, Pathfinder, etc), and who is the publisher of the book?

Thanks!

Subject: Clarification of bonus spells due to WIS

A Priest gains bonus spells for high WIS. With a score of 16, he gains 2 bonus 1st level spells and 2 bonus 2nd level spells.

Hammer, this means that, at Level 2 experience, your character can cast 4 1st level spells (2 for level, 2 for bonus).

When he becomes a 3rd level character (and able to cast 2nd level spells), he be able to cast 4 1st level spells (2 for level, 2 for bonus) and 3 2nd level spells (1 for level, 2 for bonus).

Enjoy!

It sounds like your key tactic is range. If you are actually able to buy/build warships, don't be subtle... just aerial bombard the snot out of his little planet and be done with him.

Death Star comes to mind... but a fleet of star destroyers will do fine as well.

Topic: Compendium Q&A
Subject: A reply...

Tann, I've written a reply. And I'd welcome your feedback... maybe we should move this to PMs... I don't know. But here it is...

OK once again I seem to be defending a post of mine from Keeper, go figure. There are a number of reasons for my post none of them greedy or selfish.

Scott: I'm not exactly looking for you to defend your post, Tann. I'm saying that your post, and Crow's actions, make it difficult for some of the other characters to proceed further without calling Crow to account for his actions. And, I wonder maybe if there's a way to still play Crow as you envision him while at the same time working towards party unity.

For instance, I think most of Nadya's conflict over Crow's actions lie in Crow's taking of Lambert's share with "a smile on his face". That action has Crow come off as smug, arrogant Syl who does not seem to value his companions. I talk more about this at the end...

1) We are not the first party to go here for this book so Crow wants any advantage he can get to make sure the PARTY gets there, gets the book, and does not die in the attempt.

Scott: I think I understand what you mean here. Tremain did say that we were the first group that he is sending to actually retrieve the book, but Teller of Aryn did also say that everyone who has attempted to enter the keep (for whatever reason) has not returned.

2) Crow has no need of Tomes or Books as he cannot read and lives mostly outdoors. So he did what I would do and asked for something else. However if you read my post he did so not only for himself but for Saadar and Kaelyn’s characters too as they are not “Spellcasters” or book types.

Scott: Yep, as a player, I didn't have too much of a problem with what Crow actually asked for. Nadya didn't particular care for how Crow made the request (Crow's "Oh great librarian.." lines come across as sarcastic, distainful and arrogant), but, as a player, I can work out a post for Nadya.

3) Though he took the 500 gold given up by Tek’s character he only took it because Tek gave it up. Crow never asked for more money just questioned if going to this tower for 1000 gold was worth dying for. On top of that he is not pocketing that money for himself but using it to find anything magical that once again will help him and thus the PARTY survive this quest.

Scott: I'm don't think that's exactly what Tek posted... that Crow was free to take Lambert's share. He definitely posted Lambert offering to give Crow his share after they completed the mission. Whether he meant the entire 1000 gold or just the 500 gold that each receives at the end, I can't be certain. Perhaps Tek could clarify that for us.

As far as spending the extra money of magical gear for himself to help the party... part of the problem with that is the characters, in character, don't know Crow's intentions as he is pursuing the purchasing of equipment outside of their presence (and you stated those intention OOC). So, from Nadya's perspective (and mine) it seems as though Crow just helped himself to a share that did not belong to him for his own personal gain... which comes off as greedy. To push it further, you posted that Crow actually smiled while helping himself to Lambert's share, which makes Crow come off as smugly arrogant.

This is the part of your post that I feel pushes some of our characters into a corner, where they either rebuke Crow some more, call it quits, or kick Crow out... none of those options feel really enjoyable to write as a player.

4) Crow’s job as Pathfinder puts him in the most danger as I will be in front of the party by 30-40 yards in wooded areas and such and will possibly be the first to be attacked. So again any advantage he can gain he will take.

Scott: I get that Crow's looking for the advantage to help preserve his own life and, by doing so, the lives of the party members as well... so, I have no problem with Crow's response to Lambert being, "My cause is my own and I can ask for things as much as anyone else" and "your hurt feelings be damned" (I liked that line actually). I'm just trying to find the virtue in Crow... it's one thing to look for the advantage. It's another thing, though, for Crow to take advantage of another companion. That's how your post came across to me... like Crow was taking advantage of Lambert.

5) As far as teamwork that will be no problem as I will work with everyone as he is no ‘Lone wolf’. However he does not consider any in the party as a friend but more like co-workers due to his background. Crow will do his job and do it to the best of his abilities for the betterment of the PARTY.

Scott: I'm not so much worried that you won't play Crow as a skillful pathfinder. (I'm quite confident in your ability to do so actually) I'm more "worried" that few of the other characters are going to be too interested in working with Crow if he continues to treat people the way he did in this first encounter. They'll just find a new companion...

6) I’m attempting to play my alignment as stated in the 2nd Edition Players Handbook as copy and pasted below.

Scott: I appreciate that. I guess I'm trying to discover the "good" and "virtuous" parts of Crow to help Nadya (and Alana) overlook what seems to also be arrogant and smugness of Crow. Do you understand what I mean? Currently, from mine and Nadya's prespective, Crow's a hard person to like. What's "heroic" about Crow?

7) Finally as I know Keeper as a close friend in real life Ayrn, if he wants to quit, let him quit. There is no point in trying to get him to stay if he wants to go; he is very stubborn that way. Honestly, though he is a good friend, HE has more problems with my posts whether I post them as a DM or a player then any one person I know.

Scott: I'm less inclined to give up yet on Keeper or Alana. I like the character. And I'm hoping he'll stay. I'm wondering if maybe we can find a way to bring us all together.

For instance, if you had Crow, instead of taking Lambert's share, he tossed the share over to another companions and said, "Someone should probably make sure the priest gets this." ... I think we'd just be in a different place right now. Crow comes out as the "hero" and the "bigger man", able to put aside himself for the betterment of Lambert.

Anyway, maybe it doesn't matter anymore... I don't know.

Peace, man.
Scott

Subject: Not ready to leave yet...

Keeper, I'd encourage you to stick around a little longer, as I think we can find a way through this as players. I know that may be hard as you seem to have made your decision final, but... please, reconsider. Alana is a neat character, and I think she could make alternative response to not showing up at the ferry. As a player, it might involve back posting a response to Crow... I don't know...

Like Keeper, however, I will admit, I'm not really looking to play long in a game that's going to be filled with party in-fighting. I get that our culture is on this kick of celebrating the anti-heroes (the Punisher) and the "flawed heroes" (Iron Man, Thor, Raislin, etc)... and they can make for a good book or film, I suppose... but, I haven't had a really great experience at the gaming table with those type of characters very often. I got enough "drama" in my own RL, that I don't really have a lot of energy for creatively working through pretend tension while at the same time looking to keep the party together.

I said this earlier: it's all fine and well that if you and I want to create "lone-wolf" and/or "flawed" heroes (with character traits that are less than heroic), but if we do, the most important bit of our roleplaying has got to be sorting out how our characters are going to make it as a team. If we can't navigate that, then lone-wolf characters are just going to end up being left alone.

Peace!
Ayrn
