Topic: You Filthy Little Thief!!!
Subject: Yep... it's a novel

The road between the Standing Stones and Drefast, while busy with the hustle and bustle of troop movements and trade caravans, had been mostly uneventful. The villages of Vala’Lai and Dracfair were times of refreshing for the wandering pair of Pio and Alcee. It had been interrupted only once when they had come upon a cidal trader beset by brigands. But even then, one glare from Pio and one snort from Alcee set the thugs running.

Pio had received word yesterday, while in Dracfair, that his “father”, Ormander, was in need of aid. And while Pio has often helped Ormander since leaving the orphanage, it was rare that the old man actually came looking for aid… and the word worried the knight.

Upon arriving at the city gates, Pio produced his citizenship papers for the guards. When all was in order, the knight and his companion made their way down to the dark alleys of Drefast, the poor district where the orphanage was located.

As usual, Pio had the mixed feeling of “being home” and “being out of place” at the same time. He knew the people here, had grown up amongst them, knew their stories. But for some reason, Pio had been able to catapult himself out of the poverty that still hung like a shadow in this place.

Pio noticed a group of boys hanging sullenly in a dark side alley and remembered when he used to hide in those same shadows. Alcee snorted under the weight of the unseen eyes. “Easy lass,” soothed the knight. “They are still getting use to the sight of such a glorious creature.”

Arriving at the orphanage, Pio stabled Alcee for the time being and headed in to find Ormander. He recognized some of children as he enter, “Good day, Benito!” The wiry boy’s eyes lit up as Pio continued, “You have grown into quite the young lad. How is your sword arm coming along?”

“Very good, Pio!” Benito said with a sly grin. “Very soon I shall best you!”

“Ah!” smiled the knight as he removed his helm and placed it on the boy’s head. “I see! Well, if your skill can match your bravery, sir Benito, I would guess you to be right! Perhaps we will put it to the test later, hmmm?”

Pio turned his attention to the brunette lass nearby. “And Celeste! My! My! How can it be that you are still here?”

Celeste gave the knight a confused look. “What do you mean, Pio?”

Removing his gauntlets, Pio kneeled before the girl and took her hand in his and kissed it. “I mean I am surprise a fine young suitor has not come and taken you away, my dear princess.” Celeste blushed at the attention.

Standing again, Pio looked around the place, “We shall have to talk to our father about hosting some fancy parties here to so that fine young noblemen of Drefast might find this hidden diamond.”

Celeste replied gently but firmly, “I am not interested in nobles, Pio.”

It was Pio who gave the girl and confused look now. “Why not, fair maiden?”

Celeste continued, “For the noblemen of Drefast have diamonds aplenty, and I would end up as only one among many, hoarded and forgotten.” She paused for a moment, as if think of what to say next. “I should much prefer a simpler man who would treasure me, take me out often to look upon me, captured by the beauty of this gemstone.”

Pio, stunned by the girl’s words, took a moment to gather his own. “Well, fair maiden, you have captured my attention. Your heart is noble, and you speak with wisdom. You are indeed a princess.” He kissed the girl on the forehead.

Changing the topic as he gathered up his gauntlets and helm, “Now, my dear wise sage, perhaps you could tell me where our father is at.”

Celeste smiled. “His office. Serving tea to guests as usual. Some of the others have already arrived.”

Others have already arrived… what kind of trouble are you in, father?

Looking towards the office, Pio spoke over his shoulder to Benito, “Watch over Alcee, lad. But don’t get to close… she could best us both.”

Pio was walking down the hallway when he heard Ormander’s voice calling for Athur to stop his skulking and come into the office.

“Alright,” Athur replied. “But I swear I didn’t do it this time! If it was bad enough you had to call me here after all these years for something you just found out I did, you are getting slow in your old age.”

Pio smiled as he rounded the corner and, sure enough, saw the vaguely familiar form of Athur enter into father’s office, now all grown up. But still getting into trouble.

The familiar sound of a khord assaulted his ears next. “As much as this get together is nice, I’m dying to know what it is you have called us her for, Ormander.”

Kastor?!

Sure enough, as Pio entered into the office there was Kastor the Khord, Athur, and…

Percy!?!?

Pio was stunned. The young lass that he had once teased playfully over a decade ago had grown into a stunning woman during her time away. Her loveliness took his breath away for a moment.

Coming to his senses, Pio clapped the khord on the back, “Kastor, my friend! Still got the patience of a khord, I see. Must actually be in the blood, hmmm? We all know Ormander doesn’t talk business until everyone’s belly is warmed up by at least two cups of tea.”

“And, Kastor!” Pio set down his helm and gauntlets. “Why do you introduce yourself to Athur like you have never met. I know the lad was just a child when you left for your crusades in the Chakrans, but Ormander’s been chasing Athur around since the boy could walk.”

Turning to Athur, the knight clasped the younger man’s hand. “How have you been, friend? I have not heard much of you since you left for the east many moons ago.”

[OOC: Tag Drakar]

Pio then turned his attention to the young woman, taking her hand gently in his, “And Percifeer. Well! You are looking very well. How is it that your husband has let you so far from his sights? I should think a man in possession of such a great treasure would want to keep it close at all times... so as not to lose it.”

[OOC: Tag Suicidolt]

Finally, Pio embraced Ormander. “I came as soon as I received word, father. Your health is well, I trust.”

[OOC: Tag DM]

[Double-OOC: Whew! Sorry about the novel!]

I picked up the Long Sword +1 [DMG] and a Healing Belt [MIC, pg 110)

A Healing Belt grants the following:

+2 Heal checks (always active)

3 charges each day which are renewed each day at dawn.
By expending charges through touch, Pio can heal damage (or cause damage to undead) in the following amounts:

1 charge = heals 2d8 hp
2 charges = heals 3d8 hp
3 charges = heals 4d8 hp

PLAYER: AYRN

GENERAL INFORMATION

Name: Pio Erosa [pronounced “PEE-oh AIR-rose-AH”]
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Religion: Therassor

Build: Warblade 1 / Crusader 1 / Dragon Shaman 1 / Warblade +1
Experience: 6000 xp

Race: Human
Gender: Male
Age: 30 y.o.
Height: 5 ft 7 in
Weight: 176 lbs
Hair: Brown, with wisps of grey
Eyes: Lively green
Skin: Copper, weathered, clean shaven

Pic: http://www.janeng.com/portfolio2/images/artwork/warrior_web.jpg

Description: Standing at just over five and a half feet tall and weighing roughly 175 pounds, Pio is a typical drannese male. His chestnut hair, while thick, is usually kept short and never allowed to grow past his chin. The warrior is slender, yet his muscles are corded and built for endurance.

Pio is a man of deep, passionate faith – yet is also simple and earthy. While he pays heed to all the gods of good, his life path has drawn him towards Therassor, the god of righteous battle. While Pio can be a tactician when the need arises, he is a man of action who seeks to win both the favour of his lord and of men through his deeds.

While not overtly a glory hound, Pio is secretly looking to make a name for himself. And while he enjoys the praises of men (and women), he does not look to lord over anyone. Somewhat surprising (at least to Pio), Pio has often found himself leading men into battle over the past seven years.

Pio is a man of the common folk who remains deeply connected to his humble upbringing despite his successes in battle. Not forgetting to debt owed to Ormander, Pio has often returned to Drefast to lend the old man a hand through donations of wealth and time. While he sees the thievery of the orphanage as a necessary evil to survive in the often times cruel environment of Drefast, Pio hopes for a day when the orphanage will not longer need sulk in the shadows. Armed that hope – that dream for a better future – Pio continues to work on Ormander’s behalf. It is what has brought him back home this day.

Recent History: Pio has spent the last ten years wandering throughout the lands of Drannon as a soldier of fortune, often returning to Drefast after a specific contract is complete. He has fought in a variety of campaigns against Sendria, a few against Ertain, and has ventured as far as the swamps of Kedesh to the west. From time to time, he has taken on “exploration” jobs, delving deep into tombs and towers from ages past, looking to recover long forgotten “items of interest” for his employers. His powerful weapon and belt were “acquired” on one such expedition into the ruins of Thrinacia, though Pio would say that it was a gift given to him by the handmaiden of Therassor herself.

I'm looking to finish my guy up today or tomorrow.

Would you prefer that my character "snuck" his family aboard the ship and then once we were out in the black, they started coming out of hiding?

That could be tricky... but if you're willing to help me think of creative ways to beat the ship's security, that would be a hoot... especially seeing as Jack is all 'boot security and all.

You suggested that the character(s) could have boarded at DS9? Yes?

Help me flesh that out a bit more...

Did the Cerberus just get back from DS9? If so, perhaps my character and his family boarded there (perhaps as refugees from Bajor) and the guy had a knack for the food and hospitality trade. They don't have anywhere else really to go, he and his wife are really great at working the lounge and improving the crew morale, and the kids grew up on war-torn Bajor... so, you know, they're use to growing up in a war zone.

Yes? What were you thinking?

I'm interested...

I know it's not listed above, but I was thinking of taking on the role of "manager" of the Lounge.

I'm envisioning a husband and wife team, with kids?!? Are kids allowed on ships of war?

I'd handle all the "characters" in this family (like Brom did with the XO and his wife). I'm hoping the role will be somewhat less demanding and crucial, and more of a behind-the-scene, comedic relief, ambiance-setting kind of role.

What do you think?

“You want us to do a thorough sweep of the room, Sir?” Denes ask as they came up to the recreation room.

The lieutenant’s response was short and direct, just the way Denes liked it: “Yeah. Uniform sweep. Move out.”

Denes liked the way the man led… from the front. Sure, it’s not standard procedure. But, it sure shows balls. You could trust a lieutenant who put himself out there with the rest of the grunts.

As his team continued to scan the room, Pearson regarded his second-in-command too. While Blake had seemed a bit flaky back at base, the private could tell the woman was all business now.

The staff sergeant’s voice crackled to life in his ear: << Lieutenant, Kane here. We have gained entrance on our side of the Facility and have found the body of one of those Ape-type creatures. >>

Great… that’s just great, thought Denes. At least the thing’s dead.

The recreation room yielded no indication on what was going on at the facility, and none of the research staff had shown themselves yet, as Denes had hoped for.

“Still no welcoming party, Sir,” Denes said glumly, but then smiled slightly. “Maybe they’re busy cooking us up some quarter-pound yeti burgers back in the lab. Betcha that’d be some serious meat, hey. With some good ol’ Texas barbeque sauce.”

>>> OOC: Tag Fire Team A… respond if you like… or Denes will just keep rambling… <<<

When they had finished their sweep, the lieutenant ordered the team to move into the garage and continue in the same manner.

The sight was not hopeful – charred walls, black soot everywhere, and vehicles that looked like they had been used for spare parts. Not good, Denes. Stay alert, man. Stay alert.

“What do you think, Sir?” asked Denes as they moved forward in their sweep. “Abominable snowmen arsonists…”

The private’s voice trailed off as a whirring sound started up in the far corner of the room. What the…

As the “robot” rose up from its corner position, Denes’ M19 was immediately trained on it.

“Intruders detected…” came the voice from inside the thing.

“Sweet mother-f&^$ing Mary!” exclaimed the private. “What the h@#$ is that thing?”

“…gamma-four-six. Hostiles to be destroyed.”

“Oh s#*%!” Denes shot low on the thing, hoping to disable its strange propulsion system, as he moved for cover behind one of the nearest vehicles.

OOC: Alright… a couple of things. 1) Denes M19 is set on three-round burst. 2) Denes is looking to stay close to the lieutenant, so if Kernan does not go for cover, or seeks cover elsewhere, Denes is following after Kernan.

Subject: Some more questions...

Is it possible to determine (prior to the robot's appearance) where the fire originated from? Does it look like a number of explosives went off? Or laser burns? Or anything else?

Also, are our weapons (specifically, Denes' M19A2) equipped with any kind of targetting system. i.e. laser sights, scope, iron sights, etc?

Regarding the robot, I know I asked a similiar question, but: does it appear that the robot is made from unusual/ unknown material? Or can we tell that the thing's body looks like it's made from steel, or some other known substance?

Also, the turret on the robot. Does it appear to be a single-type weapon (like a gatling gun) or does it seem to be a multi-type weapon system which the robot can choose from a selection of options i.e. it's got a laser cannon, a mini-missile launcher, a machine-gun, etc?

Also, how tall/ big is the robot? How far away is it from our location? What's in between us and it currently? How far away are we from the exits (specifically, the Rec Room door)

Is it possible to go under the vehicles? How much space is there between the body of the vehicles and the floor? Is it possible to shoot out from under the vehicles?

Thanks!

Olan,

Question about my grenades (from both the launcher and the hand ones): If I fire one off will my team mates likely to be caught in the blast? I'm not really worried about anything else blowing up in the room (save the robot). Your post seems to suggest that all the flammable stuff has already been torch.

Also, is there any noticeable (heavy) weapons on any of the vehicles in the room? And do they look like they are in working condition?

Thanks!

Subject: Any place for cover?

In the garage, is there any place for cover from this thing? I'm guessing the vehicles could provide cover, yes? Are they reasonably close enough that I could find cover behind, beside, or under the nearest one? Perhaps a better question: How far away is the nearest cover?

Also, are we close enough that we could step out of the room?

Regarding the robot: Is there only one noticeable ranged weapon (the turret) or are there others? Does it appear that the turret can swivel freely in any direction, or does the robot actually have to move to aim it's weapon?

Can the robot hover over the vehicles? or is there a noticeable limit to how high it can hover? Is there a limit as to how low it can hover?

Being a grenadier, I am assuming that Denes knows a little about the resistance of materials to certain damage. i.e. he'd be trained to know whether or not a grenade would be effective against a steel door, or a tank, or a person... or if he should use plastics or bullets inside... yes?

Can Denes tell if bullets would be effective against the robot's "body", or if a grenade is needed to "get the job done"?

Is there a standard procedure regarding "new, unknown identities"? I'm hesitant to post "Denes launches a grenade at the center of this possibility one-of-a-kind, state-of-the-art, military defense weaponry."

I understand the fatigue is something Denes needs to rest up to get rid off... but is the damage temporary loss which heals itself in a warmer environment, or is it "need to lie down with some hot chicken noodle soup" damage, i.e. bed rest is the only solution?

Topic: A Cold Day in Hell Q&A
Subject: Well... actually...

The Gm did include the time indicator. He includes them at the beginning of each post. Usually in the form of: Date, Location, Time.

So for us, Olan noted that the helicopter touched down at 1706 (5:06 pm) and we ended up inside the facility at 1739 (5:39 pm). So, my guess is we spent about 20-25 minutes outside.

Now, just so it's clear from my above posts... I'm not complaining about the moderate damage. And the comparison I made to Vannie's character was just meant to be silly. I realize two things:

1) Your (olan) posting of our damage to the Q/A forum is completely meant OOC. In game, Denes has no idea how much damage the others are sustaining. In fact, he might be thinking in his head, Wow! If I'm this cold, little miss techie's woo-hoo must be frozen right shut.

2) Like Brianna said, hey, sometimes the dice roll bad. C'est la vie! (That's life!)

What I am trying to indicate in my above posts is my (player) uncertainty of the options available to us. In DnD, I'd just ask the cleric to come over and cast a spell, or I'd drink my healing potion, or I'd sleep it off in the middle of the spooky dungeon (cuz that's what REAL adventurers do! ).

But what do army dudes do when they get fatigued in the middle of a mission?

If the answer is "Suck it up, princess!" so be it. Cool, actually! Role-playing a fatigued, put-it-all-on-the-line trooper sounds like a neat challenge.

But if there are other options... cool! Let me know.

Also, the health indicator I think is good to know. I would assume that Rangers are trained to be fairly intune with their bodies. They know when they can continue on, and when they need to take a breather. Yes? Maybe this is a bad assumption.

So, yeah... I'm not compaining... just looking for more info!

Thanks!
