Subject: My Suggestion...

I agree... let's map out the portals in this room. I suggest we try the north portal this time. Figure out a way to get back here and then try the east portal, come back again and try the west.

Thoughts?

Al, we came in through the north portal when we first entered into this room from the island, yes? Or was it a different portal. (the X on the very first map -on pg 8- has us near the north portal)

Just checking... thanks!

Subject: Cool...

I have one more clarifying question:

If I played a fighter, and took the Bard special features in the dead levels, would I also gain the bards spell progression?

So... for example, say a Human Fighter 10, would gain the bonus feats at 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th and the bard special features for levels 3, 5, 7, 9... allowing him to cast 2nd level bard spells?

Regarding everything else, though, he'd be progressing as a fighter (hit points, base attack progression, good fort saves, 2 skill points per level)?

Thanks!

Subject: Question regarding the "special" ruling

Hi Axiomatic,

I was wondering if you could clarify for me the ruling regarding "dead levels"...

If I were looking to play a sorcerer, does every level after the first count as a "dead level" because there is nothing listed in the "special" column, or does the fact that the sorcerer increased in spellcasting power count as "special"?

Thanks so much!

You don't gain the level of prestige class, just the special abilities of the prestige class.

Also, does this mean a cleric or sorcerer could gain a bonus feat every level after 1st?

Thanks!

So, if I were playing a fighter, I swap my "gain nothing" special for a bonus feat at 3rd and 5th levels, and then at level 7 begin swapping out my odd levels of "gain nothing" with prestige class levels, all the while gaining the Fighter's attack progression and hit point bonus?

Your dark elf is all-sorts of crazy! Just saying.

Anyway, let's get this game back on track before it stalls and we don't make it out of the first room.

Philosopher, a couple questions:

1) Does it look like it is possible and highly probable that one might remove the key from the lantern without extinguishing the light or destroying the lantern?

2) Can you describe the three rings on the pedastal a bit more for me? My understanding is the 3 rings rotate around the top of the pedastal, but are the words and symbols created when all three rings line up in a certain way? Do all the symbols appear at the same timg when the rings are lined up in a certain way?

Thanks!

Violet muttered violent threats towards the weasel sniper as she lined up her shot. The skilled archer took the time needed, knowing that missing her target meant more opportunities for arrows to rain down on her friends. Drawing Catkin’s string back once more to her cheek, she released her arrow.

The missile sailed swift and true, embedding itself deep into the weasel’s gut. The wretched creature cried out in pain as he fell from his perch to the ground below.

OOC: Violet won the draw and managed to just hit Shim... fortunately, the arrow did maximum damage. Shim isn’t dead... but he’s out of combat, writhing in pain, and bleeding out fast.

Onepaw and Farot heard the sounds of the companion’s wail, but did not deviate from their course. From his tree perch, Asher could see the battle unfolding below: Ribbon crouched down within the circle of stones, Onepaw circling around for an entrance in, Farot looking as though he hope to just jump over the stones, Fenir converging on the group, but still a few seconds behind.

Asher tried to find some angle for a shot, but the weasels were wisely using the rock as cover. He was about to ask Violet if she had a shot, when he noticed movement below her tree. Another weasel had slipped around behind their line and was about to throw a wicked looking spear into his companions back.

“Violet!” he squeaked a warning, even as he drew back his bow. “Below you!”

Asher’s arrow launched from his bow with a twang and streaked towards the stealthy weasel. The creature had the misfortune of trying to duck out of view when he heard Asher’s warning cry, and the arrow that would have taken him in his leather armor slammed instead into his vulnerable face, the sudden impact knocking his to the forest floor.

Looking below her, Violet saw the weasel laid out on ground. She looked towards Asher to say thanks but her words were caught in her throat as she saw another weasel approaching Asher’s position!

OOC: Asher manages to take out a stealthy weasel unseen until this round, his arrow doing maximum damage as well. (bunch of lucky hot shots!)

Ribbon waited, crouched low behind the rock cover, she could hear the weasels on the other side, and tried to anticipate their attack. There were only three ways into the protective circle: the southern entrance which she had used; the eastern entrance; or going over the rocks.

Drawing Pin, the mousemaid’s rapier, Ribbon held her breath and listened carefully.

She caught the sound of Farot’s claws clamouring over the stone and pressed herself against the stone underneath where she thought he’d come over. Seeing the beast’s shadow appear against the opposite wall, Ribbon launched herself up, jabbing her rapier with a quick thrust into unprotected space between Farot’s rear paws. The blade slid sickeningly deep into Farot’s body, puncturing multiple organs along the way. The creature fell from the rocks with a surprised “eep”, eyes frozen wide as died. The momentum of Farot’s fall wrenched the blade of Ribbon’s slender fingers, leaving the mouse warrior unarmed.

OOC: Grrr... Ribbon also manages to do maximum damage to Farot, slaying the beast.

Fenir had watched Farot appear on top of the rock. The badger had seen his companion’s blade drive up into the beast’s underside, heard the creature’s shorten cry of death, and seen Ribbon’s blade fall away with the weasel. Even as he sprinted to the southern entrance of the sheltered rocks, he could see Onepaw’s head bob in from the eastern side and knew time was short for the mousemaid.

Onepaw had also seen his companion slain by the mousemaid’s blade, as he moved in from the east. He cursed their luck. Their commander had set them here and told them to ambush any moles that dared to venture this close to the roost. But these creatures were not short-sighted moles! They were well sighted squirrels and badgers and mice! He knew that if his hidden companions, who were circling around behind the intruders, didn’t take care of those blasted squirrel archers quickly, he would be lying next to Farot soon enough. He pushed the thought from his mind knowing that his fate was determined one way or the other. At least he might have the pleasure of running the lithe mouse through...

Entering into the rock shelter, Onepaw crouched low, allowing the rocks to cover him from the sniping squirrels. He found Ribbon, kneeling down, attempting to retrieve her rapier from the still form of Farot. He licked his lips as he slowly advanced on his unarmed prey. This should be easy enough... he thought, as he drew he spear back.

Ribbon looked up at the advancing foe, noting the wicked spear in the beast’s paw. She looked for an opening, a weakness, her paws trying to locate some other weapon. Subtly, her right paw closed around some loose stones near her. As the foul beast drew back the spear to strike, Ribbon tossed the stones at Onepaw’s face. The weasel turned his face away, closed his eyes for a moment to avoid the grit, laughed cruelly as he turned to attack the mouse once more. Did she honestly think that would be enough to stop me? he wondered as he opened his eyes.

But the distraction had been enough...

Enough for the barrel chested badger to bound in from the south. Assessing the situation quickly, Fenir launched himself over the kneeling Ribbon and slammed his full weight into the surprised weasel. The force sandwiched Onepaw between the rock wall and the hulking weight of the badger. The air was knocked out of the weasel, the spear falling from his paw and he crumpled to the ground, wheezing and gasping for air.

Fenir was bruised too, though the weasel had absorbed most of the kinetic energy from slamming into the rock. Looking himself over, he also noticed a small gash across his left forepaw from where Onepaw’s spear had grazed him.

OOC: Fenir knocks the wind out of Onepaw, causing the creature 3 points of damage. Fenir also sustains 2 points of damage, one from the spear grazing him, the other from slamming into the rock wall with Onepaw.

OOC: Alright, some notes:

1) Onepaw is winded, though alive. He can easily be dispatched or bound by Fenir in the following round. Though, if you leave him, he will recover within 2-3 rounds.

2) Shim is dying, in a lot of pain, and crying out loudly. Without any treatment, he’ll be dead within 3 rounds.

3) Farot is dead dead as is the weasel who was trying to sneak up on Violet.

4) There is a weasel trying to sneak up on Asher that Violet has noticed.

5) Seriously, you guys have the dice gods on your side... the number of 4-6’s you guys rolled compared to the number of 1-3’s the NPCs rolled... unbelievable!

What would you like to do next?

As Ribbon raced into the clearing, she knew at once that she had made an error in judgement. The hair on her neck rose as she looked back towards her companions, wanting to warn them of the danger she felt. “Fenir...!”

As the name of her badger friend escaped her lips, she heard the telltale whoosh of the arrow a moment before it impacted her left thigh. “Eeep!” she squeaked as she tumbled and rolled into the grass.

OOC: Shim, the weasel, hits Ribbon with a 5+1 attack for 3 points of damage.

The weasel, Shim, gloated with glee, “Gotcha!” even as he notched another arrow. He was about to let it loose on his prone target when Fenir’s stone whistled through Shim’s tree cover and knocked the weasel in the head. Dazed by the impact, Shim’s fingers let loose the drawsting and the arrow sailed wide of Ribbon.

OOC: Fenir rolls a natural 6 attack for 2 points of damage.

The other weasel in the tree, Sham, spots the badger and takes aim. Violet lets out a soft breath and releases Catkin’s string a moment sooner. Her arrow races through the leaf coverage and finds its mark, thudding deep within the foul beast’s throat. Sham, clutching at the shaft, gurgles and gasps for air before tumbling out of the tree.

OOC: Violet rolls a 5 attack for 5 points of damage, ending Sham’s life.

The two weasels guarding the northern exit, Farot and Onepaw, rush out suddenly, yipping loud battle cries, eager to end the injured mouse-maid’s life. Asher, worried for Ribbon’s life, quickly lines up a shot from his shortbow, but the arrow falls short, thumping into the ground two steps in front of the oncoming weasels.

OOC: Asher rolls a 2+1 attack, but fails to hit Onepaw.

Ribbon raises herself from the ground and limps to the cover of the stone circle, hopeful the she might at least avoid another attack from his unseen assailant in the trees.

OOC: Alright, round 1 of combat finished. Some notes:
1) You all can see 3 weasels now – Shim (the one in the tree who hit Ribbon), and Farot and Onepaw (the two rushing out towards Ribbon).

2) Onepaw and Farot have both spotted Fenir and Violet (and Ribbon, of course).

3) Onepaw has also spotted Asher.

4) Shim, having been dazed by the stone, seems to only have noticed Ribbon.

5) The stones surrounding the spring will provide good, but not complete, cover for Ribbon from Shim.

6) Onepaw and Farot will be within striking distance of Ribbon by next round.

I think that is all for now.
Enjoy!

Topic: What is your take on this?
Subject: Nope...

I think if I understand Traveller's rules correctly, this is how it would work:

Rank 1 = 0+1 = 1 week training.
Rank 2 = 0+1+2 = 3 weeks training.
Rank 3 = 0+1+2+3 = 6 weeks traning.
Rank 4 = 0+1+2+3+4 = 10 weeks training.

Each rank step requires the previous rank (so you can't move from 1 to 4 ranks... you need to do the training for each rank).

This means it would take 16 weeks of training to move from Rank 2 to Rank 4. If you were looking to go from Rank 2 to Rank 5, it would take 31 weeks of training.

Slow going, for sure.

Subject: And they're off once more!

The companions decided to see if they could scout out Shadow’s Roost and get a sense of what they would be up against. Consulting Tigwyn’s map, the group had a sense of where the roost would be, but there didn’t appear to be any clear paths, direct or indirect.

Setting out from the Quarry, the terrain is, at first, rocky and broken. Soon enough, though, the dark and tangled trees and vegetation that cover the valleys of the Murkenhill closed in. Asher and Violet moved into the trees, scurrying through the tangled web of branches. Meanwhile, Fenir and Ribbon pressed along through the underbrush, the larger badger creating an easy path for the smaller mouse to follow.

After a long and steady march northwest, the group emerges into a clearing from the southeast side. A ring of large boulders rises naturally near the center, surrounding a small spring. Water bubbles clean and clear, creating a small pool before overflowing and trailing out to the southwest in a small stream.

Ribbon squeals in delight, “Come on, Fenir, I’ll race you. I bet the water’s delicious.” The mouse takes off running to the spring.

Even as the impetuous mouse runs into the clearing, her companions feel the hairs on their necks rise. Something’s not right.

Scanning the tree lines, the scouts and warrior find the cause. Weasels...

Violet, from her own perch, sees a weasel in a tree to the northeast. The beast’s arrow is already notched, and the creature seems to be trying to locate any companions of Ribbon. So, far, the weasel does not seem to notice Violet.

Asher, from his perch, sees two weasels standing within the shadows of some trees to the north. They had spears in hand and are watching the mouse, seemingly waiting to spring a trap. They do not seem to have noticed Asher.

Fenir, from the ground, spots a weasel sitting in a tree to the northwest. An arrow is notched in the beast’s bow and the creature seems to be lining up its shot on Ribbon.

OOC: A couple of notes:

1. Each of the character only notices the weasel (s) listed for them. So, Fenir only notices the one weasel sighting Ribbon... and so on.

2. Each of you passed your notice and stealth checks.

3.
Astrid, you have a number of options for Fenir, but one of them is to rush out and try to shield Ribbon from an oncoming arrow. It does mean that if the arrow would normal hit Ribbon, it will hit Fenir automatically. You definitely do not have to take this action... there’s lot of other actions you might take, that may help Ribbon defend herself. This one merely guarantees that if she would get hit, she doesn’t – Fenir does.

Enjoy!
