Tek, did you delete your post because you had second thoughts about adding your 2 cents in? You second guessed the info you shared? Or you didn't want to sway our discussion?

Regardless, Tobias is more in favor of setting up camp and getting an early start in the morning. Korviss seems in favor of that too, and Kaelyn's PC (sorry, still learning his name) is in favor of some healing services before day's end. So, while some of us still have some feelings about pushing forward, I think we can all find common ground for setting up camp.

Agreed?

Subject: More thoughts on the subject

I'm still torn. I can see both your points of view. I'm trying to think through what Tobias would be thinking, having been a Templar at one time and likely having dealt with bandits in the past.

Initially, I thought he'd probably push forward, hoping to come upon the bandits at night when most of their numbers would likely be sleeping and caught unaware. If we knew the location at this point in time, I feel fairly confident that would be Tobias' game plan. In his mind (and mine, I suppose), he imagines the bandits to be disorganized, with little to no military or warrior training. (I know he could be completely wrong, but that's his assumption) They are bullies, who use intimidation along with surprise and swarm tactics. (Again, an assumption)

However, we don't know the location of the bandit camp yet, and the darker it gets the harder it will be to notice trail signs. (though, again, I imagine that soon we will begin to start hearing the bandits before we see them). Tobias also has little information regarding the bandits... if Rain really does have a cure for the Fever, it's possible the bandits (or their leader) knew this and their raid was not for supplies at all.

Beyond that, Tobias is a bit nervous that the bandits have the advantage in the dark of knowing the lay of the land much better than us.

So, I guess I am leaning more towards setting up camp for the night, and perhaps sending the rogue and maybe the barbarian out on a scouting trip while the cleric and the fighter set up the camp and get some food prepared.

Any more thoughts? Additional perspectives?

Any preference here, guys? Set up camp? or push through the night?

My vote would be to push through the night... but I could be pretty easily persuaded to set up camp.

Tobias kept the Gano company as they went in search of food. The ex-templar surprised himself... normally, he kept to himself, and kept his thoughts even closer. Maybe, it was the armor the Gano worn, ill-fit as it was. Stop worrying 'bout it, man, Tobias chided himself.

The stew was fine enough... Tobias was pleased enough they had food to eat, and hot at that! However, the search for armor for the gano was a vain pursuit.

Asten bringing his gear suprised Tobias. The ex-templar felt completely undeserving of the gesture, and as the young man spoke of repayment, Tobias thought darkly, If only you knew, lad. It is I who needs to make the payment... payment for the innocent lives my hands have taken.

The boy gave him some vague clues to the location of the bandit camp. Tobias had hoped for more. The ex-templar was fearful that the bandit camp likely had scouts keeping watch just as his camp did. Wandering around in the bush and the swamp, searching for a camp seemed like a good way to get spotted by watchful scouts. Korviss might have the footfalls of a cat, Tobias thought.

Still, the nearly unspeakable hope that some girl might have a cure for the Fever... Tobias would gladly go crashing through the swamp, take the pain of a thousand arrows, and lay down his life for the rescue of such a hope.

The boy better not be lying!

As they gathered, near the camp's end, Tobias confirmed the Raslan's suspicion. "Indeed, my friend! We head east, into Scarwood. A forested swamp be about the best landmark we got so far. So, we best be on on way, keep our eyes open for sentries."

Tobias surveyed the scene in front of him. Why he had stepped out for this stranger, the ex-templar did not know. But he had... and now it seemed he, the gano and the raslan would be pushing words aside in favor of a rescue.

Tobias laughed as Korviss proclaimed that he would return soon with a new story for the camp. "I hope I shall find a place in your craft, good sir," he said to the raslan with a smile... and deep down, Tobias did hope for a place. Though the thought wasn't conscious yet, Tobias hoped that maybe, just maybe, the stories of him serving the oppressed might erased the memories of his former life.

It was his former life, displayed boldly before him in the symbols of the Order's armor, the moved the ex-templar towards the gano. Grabbing the man's massive sword from the earth, Tobias returned it to the stranger before retrieving his own. "Tobias," he said. "That's my name, stranger. Now, whaddaya say we go see if we can get a little something to eat and maybe you cleaned up a bit before we head out." Clapping the man's back, Tobias suggested with a grin, "I know this armor is fashionable in some places these days, but maybe we can find you something more in your size."

As things heated up between the half-giant and Korviss, Tobias stepped up beside the Raslan. The ex-templar didn’t think the “wee one” needed protection. No, he worry was for the stranger that had entered their camp. Tobias feared the edgy scouts might be second guessing their decision to bring the brute of man, and checked to see if any had drawn their bow strings yet.

The stranger spoke, "Well then my suspicious little ragamuffins... what say you?"

“This man is no templar,” Tobias spoke to Jarius, but loud enough for all the crowd to hear. “Ilphian’s seekers are Sylns, which this stranger is clearly not. Beyond that, his armor would be better fitted if he were indeed a Seeker.”

Turning to look at the stranger, Tobias drew his own sword in a non-threatening way, and also placed it into the ground before him as a sign of peace. “I also doubt he is an agent for the Cardinal…” A seldom seen grin came over his face as he completed his sentence, “as he most definitely lacks a honeyed tongue common to the profession.”

And so the party in fighting begins! And we have hardly even reached page two!

A couple of comments:

1) I would be really sad if this game got derailed this early on by PC infighting and poor feeling between players that their characters were getting bullied. Honestly, I deal with enough politics and office-bullying in my real life. I'm not interested in it here.

2) Can you guys leave some space/time for the rest of us to jump in with a post? For instance, I would imagine, because Korviss is already an established member of the camp, others (maybe even Tobias) would have jumped in and told the newcomer to shut his mouth or Jarius himself would have told the two characters to can it.

3) If I were roleplaying Jarius, I'd pass over both your characters for this upcoming mission. Really, though, I would.

Just saying...

Tobias kept his eyes on the boy, while Jarius attended to the stranger who had entered the camp. He overheard talk of seekers and templar, and it was all he could do not to move towards the newcomer.

“You have to help...”

The plea from the boy drew his attention back.

“Rain is more than all I have left,” Asten continued. “She may be all any of you do as well. I don’t have anything to give for this... and I know those bandits are dangerous. But please... we can’t abandon her... please...”

Koriss the sewer rat spoke first, "I will go and try to rescue your sister and the others. I'm certain there are others here that will be willing to as well. However, it will take some time to organize, and we must see about this newcomer before we can depart. So calm yourself, pushing on this will only give rise to anger and make already willing souls less willing."

Brave for his size, thought the soldier as Koriss turned his attention to Jarius.

Turning back to the boy, Tobias spoke as well, “Jarius willing, I will help you as well. Now, like Koriss said, be at peace and hold your tongue.”

If Asten is calmed, Tobias will turn his attention to Jarius and the newcomer. Koriss’ plan seems well enough, though if the man was truly one of Ilphian’s, he wouldn’t likely have any problem with putting down a group of bandits. Regardless, Tobias keeps his thoughts to himself for the moment. Eying the wounded man with distain, not because of who he was, but because of what he represented, Tobias looked for an opportunity to ask Jarius’ permission to lead a group to rescue Asten’s sister and the other captives.

If Asten is not calm, Tobias will remain with him and attempt to quiet him.

I'm still quite under the weather here. I didn't know one could carry so much mucus in their body, nor lose so much.

Between the illness and the medication, I can hardly focus nor do I have much energy.

My apologies.

Don't wait for me, my friends! Adventure on!
I'll be along soon, I promise.

My character's name is Shayleigh Bran. She hails originally from Aachen/Eisenhiem, where the forests touch the foot hills of Voralberg Mountains. She is seeking new lands for her people to settle.

She weilds a longbow and a quiver of arrows, and a shield and spear when the battle draws near. She armors herself with a breastplate and leather fauld when stepping onto the battlefield... though for the boat ride, she'd likely just where leather armor.... steel and swimming don't match.

Hope that can help get this off the ground!

As the ruckus started up off to the side, Tobias moved himself deliberately to Jarius' side. He was not meaning to intimidate the lad, though with his bulk and height it was difficult to avoid.

Tobias did not speak, but the boy's words that his sister might have a cure for the Fever caught him off-guard. The disgraced knight wanted to believe it true but, like the Raslan, was not interested in tall tales and false hope.

He waited (rather impatiently) for the boy to response.

Name: Tobias Sennett
Race: Human [Syln]
Age: 28
Gender: Male
Height: 6 ft 2 in
Weight: 210 lbs

Class: Fighter 3
Alignment: Neutral Good

Str: 18 [+4]
Dex: 14 [+2]
Con: 16 [+3]
Int: 13 [+1]
Wis: 14 [+2]
Cha: 12 [+1]

Background: Tobias once served as a Temple Knight of Mallien in Vyrrmas. Blinded by his loyalty to the church, Tobias carried out the will of Mallien with fervour for the first eight months of the Season of the Witch. Without fail, him and his brothers hunted down and brought to “trial” witches of every sort... men, women... it mattered not. All that mattered was the will of Mallien.

But there came a time when Tobias’ unit was called to put down an entire village. It was said they were harbouring witches. It was said that they were breeding the Fever amongst their children as weapons. It was said that they were a risk to the nation. It was said that they opposed the will of Ilphian.

Ilphian? This stood out in Tobias’ mind. When had they shifted from Mallien to Ilphian?

Tobias held his tongue, and carried out his orders. By nightfall, the entire village had been burned. Tobias had not found one among the villagers who showed the signs of the fever... Not one! But Ilphian had his offering. Ilphian had his sacrifice.

...

He has been part of the resistance for the last two months, hiding out in the woods with Jauris, trying to find redemption where he can.

Tall and solidly built, Tobias stands over six feet tall and weighs about two-hundred-ten pounds. His tanned face is framed by a chestnut brown, curly and unkempt hair and beard. His demeanour matches his blue eyes, steeled and icy.

Still armed and armored in the tradition of the Temple Knights, Tobias weilds his longsword and steel shield with ease. His breastplate armor is in good condition, saved for the defaced image of Mallien on it's chest.

Ambition: Redemption. Tobias somehow hopes to find redemption and peace for his soul in his service to the resistance movement.

Obsession: Guilt / shame. Tobias’ conscience is chained to his past and a deep shame which haunts him. Each wagon load of new refugees reminds him of his former self and, at night, his dreams replay his horrible past.

Phobia: The afterlife and his “dark secret” revealed. Tobias is afraid that nothing may be able to absolve him of the sins of his past and that his shall spend the afterlife tormented for the blood on his hands. He is also afraid of what people will do if they find out about all the atrocities he committed as Ilphian’s hound.

Trigger: Cardinal Ilphian’s Seekers. Tobias has nothing but disgust and derision for the disgraced clergy of Mallien. The sight of the temple knights causes bile to rise in his throat; the sight of said knights persecuting the populace causes Tobias to draw steel or nock his bow.

Racial Features: Bonus skills points [+4 @ 1st level; +1/lvl after 1st]; Bonus feat

Thanks for the Glossary Update.

I think I will change my character to the Syln Ranger 1 / Fighter 2 I had created originally. It's basically the same as Shenandoah as far as game mechanics go, just a feat change, a couple of skill changes, and mostly a background change.

I'll look to post up the character sheet tomorrow to the recruitment thread, and try to make a short post too, though I don't have much to add to the questions already asked. The post would be more a look at the current scene from my character's eyes than moving the story forward or adding to the dialogue already present (which is my way of saying, "Feel free to post, Tek").

Other players, if you could just ignore Shenandoah for the moment, that would be great! Thanks!

That is unfortunate.

Well, I suppose we could do one of two things:

1) I edit Shenandoah's backstory to work him as a solo character.

2) I go with one of my solo character ideas from before. I'd probably choose the Syln Sword and Board Fighter I posted up earlier... he is almost exactly the same as this character build, just using a different weapon.

Do you have a preference, Tek?

Subject: A couple questions

For my character:

1) Is she a native of this confederation under the rule of the Empress? Or has she travelled from somewhere else to answer the call of the Empress? If she has travelled from somewhere else, from where? And what is the state of her homelands? Where do her people originate from?

2) Related to that, is she part of a celtic culture, either as a subculture of the Empire or of another nation? If she is part of a celtic subculture of the Empire, is this subculture rather large, small, in between? Is it treated well and are the people seen as equals? Is the celtic subculture in danger of losing it's heritage, being swallowed up by the melting pot of the Empire?

3) If she is a part of the Empire, is the worship of her goddess popular, well-known, or in decline? Are bards of Brigit well-known, respected, appreciated or regarded with apathy within the Empire?

4) Do I choose my character's starting equipment, or is that part of the pre-gen character (that I have not yet seen, or overlooked)? If I am to choose her equipment, what kind of funds do I have to work with? And what kinds of weapons/armor are typical of her people?

5) Are elves part of the celtic culture in which she grew up? Or do they occupy lands nearby? Is her half-elven ancestry unusual? Do people around her view her as equal, special, or inferior because of her mixed blood?

I think that's all my questions for now.

Thanks!

Subject: Questions about the Fever

Tek,
Can you give us some background information about the Fever? What are the symptoms? What are the stages of the disease? How long does one normally have to live once you contracted it? What helps slow the disease or cure it? How wide spread is the disease? Is it just something that is affecting Alcana? Or have Tiamat's and my characters seen it in other parts of the world as we travelled? For those of us who have been with the camp for a while, how often has the disease hit the camp? Have we lost a lot of people to it?

I imagine Shenandoah has been in the camp long enough to have seen a few people catch the Fever... but please provide whatever you believe Shenandoah would know (real knowledge mixed with rumours and hearsay would be excellent). You may want to send each of us a PM concerning what we know about the Fever.

Thanks!
