Subject: Also...

1. Does Level Adj count towards your total levels? i.e. I want to play a tiefling (+1 LA)... would he be a level 1 or level 2 rogue?

(Rules as written would say that he would be a level 1 rogue)

2. When you mention your restriction against casters, do you mean ALL casters, or just arcane ones? (I'd argue that Clerics and Druids are actually as powerful as wizards, maybe more so, in 3.5)

Jozan,
Regarding HPs... let's say I was a 2nd level Rogue with Str 8 and Con 14. Would my HPs work out as follows:

Base HP: 14 (CON) + -1 (STR Mod) = 13 HP
Level 1: 6 (max d6) +2 (CON mod) = +2 HP
Level 2: 2 (d6 roll) +2 (CON Mod) = +1 HP

Total HP at Level 2: 13+2+1 = 16 HP

Yes?

Subject: Yeah... I don't see it a game breaking

The stats listed in the DMG say a PC needs to have a Exotic Weapon Proficiency [Firearms] in order to avoid the -4 penalty, the thing only does 1d10 points of damage, and requires a standard action to reload (meaning he'll need the two-weapon fighting or quick draw in order to fire off the guns effectively).

If he has the additional joy of the items being somewhat hard to find... well, I'd definitely say Raven is going for the less "optimized" and the more "stylized" choice.

Wizards on the other hand... they'll break your game.

Topic: The Shadow Cathedral Recruitment
Subject: Interested as well

Though your recruitment looks full, I'll put together a character to wait in the wings should space open up.

Current character ideas include:

A Ranger / Scout mix (maybe with Dervish)... he'd be similar to Raven's character above in the sense that he has a particular hatred towards undead. Probably a two-weapon warrior.

A Swashbuckler 3 / Fighter 2 / Dervish 4... a noble rake with flair, always looking for adventure and ladies. Definitely a two-weapon warrior.

A Warlock / Magic-user (Either Enchanter or Beguiler) mix (likely using Eldritch Theurge)... a fey-kissed gal looking to protect the innocent

A straight up Beguiler... a circus performer turned adventurer, all about showmanship.

A straight up Monk using Vow of Poverty (from Book of Exalted Deeds)... discipled, focused, lawful good human or half-orc looking to find redemption.

A barbarian from a tribe that venerates some kind of large cat (Tiger, Lion or Jaguar), not sure of the class mix (Barbarian / Ranger / Scout mix maybe)... Half-Ogre race (from Races of Destiny) or Goliath race (from Races of Stone) if allowed, in order to qualify for the Knockback feat.

Not sure if anyone is creating a ranged blaster type character yet... if not, I'd consider filled the role with either a Sorcerer (blaster-focused mage from Coria), Warlock (Eldritch blast focused halfling), Warlock/ Scout (same as warlock but with skirmish), Ranger/ Scout (lots of arrows with skirmish damage... still a undead hunter) or Dragon Shaman (breath weapon) character.

Just a few thoughts... if others find any of these usefully, please feel free to use them.

Lady Dark,

I'd be interested, though I've never done one before.

I've been thinking about the type of relationship Aly would have with Arra. I thought it would be humorous if Aidan (Aly's dog companion) was always a bit unease around Arra, but Aly really liked Arra, found her fasinating and beautiful/exotic.

I figure since our characters share a room, we should have lots of stuff to post about.

Let me know... and if you are interested, go ahead and take the lead. Like I said, I'm a virgin in the realm of collab posts.

Thanks!

Subject: Status update

Almerin and Players,

Sorry team, RL has continued to kick me this week and I don't have the emotional, mental, or physical strength to post IC for Aly.

I've been fighting my own nasty cold virus, plus still got half my kids sick here at home, plus trying to help some friends of ours going through a discouraging time.

Anyway, Aly will be elated about their victory, and deeply saddened by the loss of Ryan.

Upon returning home, I envisioned Helena performing some rite of passage with Aly that would include Aly receiving her own (perhaps, Helena's old) healing kit from her mentor.

When the summons from Geron comes, Aly would be hesitant, though Helena would push her to continue to overcome her fear.

So, Aly will answer Geron's summons.

Sorry that's all I got.
Peace!

Hammer,

A couple of clarifying questions for me:

1) Do the players have to choose one of the listed race/class combos listed above? Or do they have the freedom to create their own?

2) Do the players have to create a multi-class character? Or can they choose to just play a single class?

Thanks,

Topic: The Monster Hunters Collective
Subject: Let's see if the cidal fear bonus helps this time.

Aly could feel it long before she saw the creature, a deep-down fear that knotted her stomach and told her she could not avoid Shinara's fate.

She had hoped and she had prayed their entire journey towards Stone's Hollow that she would never face this creature again. Let braver folk slay that thing, she thought to herself. Geron and Traubon, perhaps... or one of the others. Just let me return hearth and home and tea and Helena.

But it was not to be, and the young Cidal knew it. Deep into her bones the shadow of the beast crept, even as her eyes located its shadowy form amongst the trees. Lysora, have mercy!

Her breath caught in her lungs and her chest tightened. She could hear her heart quicken its pace and felt her skin tingle with anticipation. This is it, she tried to steel herself. “This is it,” she muttered to herself.

“It’s coming, Aidan,” she whispered to her companion. The dog whined slightly, barked at the shadow, and then whined some more. It’s coming…

As if on cue, the beast leapt out in front of the group, blocking any way of returning to home without death. Aly covered her ears with her hands and tried to avoid making eye contact with the creature, tried to avoid the sight and sound of doom. Dodging to the left side of the beast, Aly and Aidan attempted to flank it.

[OOC: Aly is hoping to deafen the sound and avoid the sight of the creature as she moves to the left side of the creature. She will still be looking to keep some distance between her and the creature (about 20 ft). In the following rounds, if she isn’t overcome with fear, Aly will attempt to hit the beast with a slung stone, and Aidan will attempt to attack the creature from its rear left flank. If it seems the creature is about to scream and peel back flesh, Aly will again attempt to avoid the sight and cover her ears… even if it means dropping her sling. If the creature looks like it is coming to enter into melee with Aly, she will cast her entangle spell, centered on her. Hope that’s all clear. ]

My post is up...

Please feel completely free to have your character do his/her own thing. Tobias is just so bossy.

Topic: The Search for Tomorrow
Subject: Up a day early

As Tobias helped the released captives out into the open again, his attention was divided between counting the refugees and scanning the surrounding areas, searching for any remaining Death Brigade. His crossbow remained loaded and ready.

When everyone was accounted for, Tobias’ mind shifted into devising a plan. He called his companions together, including the recent additions of Kaimelle, Avellin, and Kiirnon. “All right. I want to stay here for as little time as possible. The further away from this place, the better. Agreed?”

[OOC: Assuming everyone agrees...]

With his companions all in agreement, Tobias laid out his plan. “Korviss, you and Kiirnon provide us with cover as we organize the people.

“Friar, take Kaimelle, Avellin, and Rain with you and go through the refugees. Pair them up and line them up in a column to travel through. If they have any injuries you can care for quickly, do so. And get us an accurate count. I don’t want to lose any.

Kresimir, see if you can get that death brigade soldier to talk. I want to know how many of them they’ve got posted here, what’s their mission, who’s their leader, and if there’s more prisoners below. If he’s not willing to talk, take care of him. I suggest you take him just inside the doorway again, out of sight of the captives.

“As soon as that column is put together, I want to move out.”

[OOC: Assuming everyone is good with their assignments... or at least seems to be going about them...]

Tobias turned his attention back to their surroundings as the others moved off. His crossbow eagerly anticipated a mark, as he ran through his plan.

[OOC: Assuming there are no hiccups to us getting organized and that the DB soldier tells us little of interest...]

When the group was ready to move, Tobias laid out the rest of his plan. “Korviss and Kiirnon take the lead. Make sure you take care of any traps along the way. Just before sun-down, we’ll need a place to bed down for the night too, so keep that in mind.

“Friar, you stand in front of the procession and keep order at the head.

“Kaimelle, you and I will travel in the middle of the column with Rain,” Turning to Rain, he continued softly, “You’ve got a way with these people, an aura of calm that seems to keep the rest peaceable. And you’re the reason we’re here to begin with. I promised your brother I’d get you back alive and well. My life is your life.”

Turning his attention to the large gano, “Kresimir, you take Avellin with you as rear guard, and watch our backs. You have a bow, Avellin?”

[OOC: If Avellin does not have a bow, Tobias will give him his crossbow and the bolts to go with it. If another crossbow (and set of bolts) from the fallen Death Brigade soldiers is lying around, all handy like, Tobias will scoop them up for his own.]

With everyone ready to move out, Tobias settled into the middle of the group, just in front of Kaimelle and Rain. He brought out his longbow and nocked an arrow as his eyes continued to scan the area for signs of trouble. His mind prayed to the gods to have pity on these common folk.

You may want to read my OOC comments. Players especially, it may be helpful for Almerin if you drop a short post here or in character stating which course of action your character is supporting. (Ta'nil's "Let's finish this thing" or Aly's "Let's head home")

Subject: Finally up... sorry for the delay.

Even as Aly slipped and stone into her sling and began to take aim, she felt her stomach flutter. The beast was much, much larger than her cub. And likely more cunning with age, the druid thought.

What happened next, though, moved her from the heightened senses one experiences when meeting a predator to the sheer terror of coming face to face with Lady Sharlys herself. The sound of the beast’s screeching nearly stunned the young cidal, causing her heart to skip a beat. Aidan fared no better, the deafening noise causing the normally brave dog to whimper and whine

But neither could stand within the beast’s presence when they watched the creature unnaturally pull back all the skin around its head. The spectacle was too much, overloading Aly’s mind and causing her body to bolt. The sling fell from her hand as her legs turned her body around to flee, to hide, to get as far away from the presence of this thing of nightmare. She cared nothing for Aidan, or Geron, or any of her companions. She didn’t think once of her village, the people already dead by this creature, or anyone else for that matter.

She knew only that to stay here, in this place, with this thing for one moment longer meant death, and, as her mind was too slow to respond, her body took charge... and Aly ran. Thorns and brambles torn at her clothes, low hanging branches and needles nicked her face... she took no notice.

A tree root caught Aly’s foot and sent her flying. The force with which she hit the ground knocked the wind out of her body and forced her to stop for a moment to catch her breath. In those moments, her mind finally caught up to her body and she sobbed. Tears streamed down her flush cheeks and her chest heaved uncontrollably.

From behind a bush nearby, the druid heard a familiar faint whining. “Come – here – Ai – dan,” Aly cried out, each word punctuated by more chest-heaves and sniffles. “Come – here – boy.”

Her loyal companion came out from behind the bush, his body low to the ground and his tail between his legs... he was frightened and ashamed. “It’s – o – kay - boy,” she tried to soothe her companion, even as her eyes darted around to ensure the beast wasn’t near. “It’s – o – kay,” she said, trying to calm herself.

The two stayed there for a while, trying to console themselves, trying to shake off the fear... and then the shame of abandoning their companions. The cidal had no idea of the fate her friends had met, she shuddered at the thought, tried to push it out. I’ll just return to the village... perhaps some of them will have made for there too. And we’ll tell them, tell the people, it’ll just too horrible. And we’ll need to send for help. And maybe the beast won’t come into the village. And maybe... And here the fear of moments before turned almost to despair as Aly knew deep in her heart that this beast would never be satisfied, that soon its attention would turn to Stone’s Hollow, and how it would feast. Aly wept all the more bitterly at the thought.

At that moment, in her deepest despair, she heard her name being called. Who called her name, she did not know... perhaps the sigie Ryan, perhaps another. But the sound of her name drew Aly up, like one being pulled from a raging river. The cidal called back, “We’re here. We’re alright.” And she cautiously made her way towards the sound of her companions, eyes stinging yet darting to and fro, at first walking then running.

As she approached the spot of her companions, Aly realized they were still at the beast’s nest. She peered out from behind some bushes. “Is it gone? Is it dead?” she nearly whispered. When she could see no sign of the creature’s presence, Aly rushed to Geron and threw her arms around him. “Oh, Geron,” she sobbed again, relief and fright and shame mixed together in a spew of words, and tears, and heaves. “I’m so sorry, Geron. I should have never come. I didn’t know. I didn’t know. It was... I’m so sorry. It was too much for me. I’m so scared, Geron. I’m sorry. I should have never come. I didn’t know. I didn’t...” No more words, just broken sobs and hot tears.

[OOC: Almerin, feel free to insert Geron’s encouragement (or not) here. Other players, feel free to chime in as well.]

After a minute or so, Aly regained herself again. Her chest still heaved and she still sniffled some, but she was able to take in her surrounding again, to notice her other companions. The khord’s wounds caught her attention, and she went to him first, “Traubon, I’m so sorry... can I take a look at that?”

[OOC: Aly will examine the wound and attempt to use her skills in healing and herblore to clean it up and mend it as best she can. She’ll also look Geron over, and she if she can help patch him up some more]

The sylvarii scout was the first to urge the party to move. "It went this way," Ta'nil pointed off into the woods. "Geron, you don't have to come if you are too tired.”

To the others, Ta’nil rallied, "C'mon we finish this beast off today!!!"

Aly was in no mood for beast tracking or chasing or slaying though. She’d had her fill for the day. Beyond that, the healer in her warned that Traubon and Geron were deeply in need of rest and attention beyond her skill.

“I think we should head back for the night,” Aly suggested unabashedly. “Traubon needs to be attended by hands of greater skill than mine. And Geron, though you may not like it, you could use a night’s rest. And...” she paused, trembling a little. “And... I’m not sure I have the courage to face the beast again.”

[OOC: Almerin, and others, I am in no way trying to delay or hinder this game. While Aly has suggested that they return home, she could be persuaded otherwise by –
1) Geron, if he refuses to head back to town
2) Geron and others offering encouragement to Aly

I will say, as a player, we are empty on healing magic and Aly’s healing/herblore will only take us so far... so... yeah. A good night’s rest and maybe calling in a favour or two from either Helena (Aly’s mentor) or the town’s priests/healers might be helpful. I recognize that we might lose the trail and have to search all over again...

Almerin, moving back to town might also allow us to drop off some PCs who’s players have left, and pick up some new players. However, if possible, even if we do go back into town, I would love it if your update pretty much brought us back to searching/ finding the beast again, as I imagine that will be our plan in the end.

Regardless of whether we head back to town or continue tracking this beast, Aly will pick up her sling again as they leave the nest area.

Subject: Waiting on...

I will post tomorrow evening (Wed).

YeOlde has posted that he will be away, and Loki seems to be off on a break too.

Jozan and Takley have posted.

Does that mean it's just Addy and I that need to post?

Aly will likely try to convince Geron to head back to the village to receive some healing. If he refuses, she'll try to patch him up as best she can.

As a player, I think it might also be usefully to see what items we can salvage from the dead lying here. Aly's not really the type to do that mind you...

ALMERIN:

Two questions -
1) Can you give a short post, either here or on the game board listing the items that have discarded around this area (weapons, backpacks, clothing, armor, pouches, etc) that we can see without really searching?

2) For the fear effect, are those who were affected able to discern whether the fear was natural or magical in nature?

Thanks,
Ayrn

Almerin,
Thanks for you concern for us as players. I appreciate it for sure.

My lack in post has for sure been partly due to where you left us, but mostly due to our newest edition to the family.

I'm looking forward to posting the fear factor part of my update. I think that will be interesting to write. As a player though, I find this part of the game difficult.

If we were at the table, this would be the part were we as players would have some conversation about what to do next. Geron needs some healing, and none of us have any healing spells. There's a monster on the loose, but how many of our character still have the resolve to hunt it down... and if we do, how are we going to overcome the fear effect? There's also likely some stuff to score on the ground here... are we stopping to search?

Some thoughts...

I still hope to post tonight.

Ayrn
