Pearson had stood firm, about ten feet away from the door he was charged to guard. His imposing figure seemed to cow the door into submission, daring it to open and reveal whatever enemy it might be hiding. But the door remained closed, and he watch was uninterrupted.

From behind, the private heard Sergeant Lee’s voice calling him back to fortify the hallway to the observatory. Pearson’s response was crisp, ‘Roger that, sarge!”

For a moment Pearson was tempted to open the door to make one quick look out, but he resisted the urge. Moving back to the entrance of the hallway, the private took up his position.

OOC: Pearson is standing in the entrance of the hallway connected to area 15. He is facing area 15, and has the left side of his body against the door/ wall. His focus is still on the doorway which leads towards area 19. He’s hoping that the wall/ door will provide him with some cover.

Hey! We got a lead! Cool! What do you say folks? Keep heading to the Broken Grommel? Or head to this new place suggested by the thug?

Here's to hoping not every bit of info is going to cost us 35 guain! How much did we lose to the thugs? 35, yes? But how much did they steal?

I saw Stryke online earlier today. I hope he's still around... I was looking forward to seeing how the impatient, sour khord would make out in this game. And I definitely was hoping to see a post or two from him in his gruff, no-nonsense way with regards to these thugs.

Sad...

Subject: Thug life... all about the big stones

Pio allowed the lead thug to converse with one of his own about the knight’s offer. Part of him wanted to cut the dogs down where they stood (and he firmly believed he and those with him could)… but there was another part of him that took pity on the band of robbers. Drefast was a hard place, and this neighbourhood was even harder. The knight knew full well that there was likely little difference between this thug and himself. We’re both looking to take care of our own…

When the thug turned his attention back to Pio, there was a big smile on his face. The man seemed to think he could make even more of a profit on this situation. “We have some information for you,” he stated. “But that reward better be good! We want 50 guain for what we know!”

Pio nearly smirk. Does he not see how close his life is to ending? The man is testing the good Lady Luck today!

As Llammoth approached him, Pio asked for a moment to discuss the offer with his people. Llammoth whispered “"He seems genuine, though fifty guain is an outrageous amount to pay a cutpurse." She looked back at Percy, and Pio followed her gaze. "Our sister seems adamant on attrition, and may ruin our chance at finding out what they have to know."

Pio merely nodded. Percy did seem to be looking for a fight. She was hot-blooded for sure… she’d even rolled up her sleeves.

Turning his attention back to the lead thief, Pio stated calmly, but firmly. “You’re price is neither fair nor appropriate. You’ve already stolen from us more than your fair share, and your girl nearly notched a bolt in my friend here, which could have really spoiled her beauty.” Pio paused for a moment. “Here’s my offer. There are seven of you. I’ll give you five guain a head for what you know. That’s thirty-five guain. Plus you get to keep what you already stole and we let you walk away with your lives. I’d say you’re doing pretty good for a day’s work, hmmm.” Pio paused once more to let the offer sit there before adding, “That’s my final offer. And the information had better be really good. My friend, the khord here, doesn’t much like being overcharged for services and has his own way of settling his accounts.”

I feel as though I should wait for the rest of the group, or for Percy's bolt to fire off.

Does Pio have time to speak prior to Percy getting us into trouble?

What does everyone think? 50 gp for the info? Personally, I think it's a bit much... especially since they already stole some of our money and nearly shot Percy in the head. I was only planning on buying them drinks at the Broken Grommel...

Let me know what you think guys about the information trade... better yet, post it IC...like, I don't know:

"The Khord snorted at the offer, 'Fifty guain! Hah! You'll tell us what ya know, ya little bugger, and ya'll be lucky ta leave with yer head. Little thug thinks he has a handle on this?' He continued to mutter, 'So help me, I'll cleave his little...'"

Subject: I'm not sure he had decided yet...

Anyway... I thought about it a bit more too.

In my mind's eye, a guard dog to me would seem to be a big dog like a german shephard. The big dogs seem to be covered under the "Riding Dog" entry of the MM.

However, since the PHB only charges 25 gp for a guard dog, I would lean towards using the regular "Dog" entry and giving the canine some known tricks. These tricks would be:

Attack
Come
Defend
Down
Guard
Heel

The dog would obey it's master, though a charm animal spell to turn the creature on it's owner.

I agree with Philosopher that adding animals to the arena adds a different level of play... but if they are available to everyone to purchase, then the playing field should still be level, right? (Everyone is going to get a guard dog now ) As players we have choices to make with regards to how we will spend our resources, right? ("Do I get two vials of acid or one flask of alchemist fire?" "Do I get a shield and pick up power attack, or do I wield two weapons and get Two-Weapon Fighting?")

My understanding of this game is that its pretty much hack n' slash. You get 10 rounds to kill off as many opponents as possible. So the idea is to either try out character classes and see how they'll stand up in combat, or look to build the most powerful character possible and try to dominate!

ON A DIFFERENT NOTE: Devalero, you haven't spoken much about the environment we'll be fighting in. Will each fight be in the same location? Are there natural hazards within the arena? Will there be natural cover or concealment in the arena? Will all the areas in the arena be lit? Will there be NPC creatures also looking to do battle with us?

Just curious?

Also, do characters have a round or two prior to the fight match beginning to cast buff spells on themselves? (i.e. Mage Armor)

Thanks!

Good question what 25 gp gets you in a dog... I'dhave to think about it for a bit.

Thanks Devalero for your quick response. Your rules regarding animal companions and familiars makes sense. As does your rules regarding drawing a weapon as part of a move action.

Still uncertain about your rules regarding animals purchased and brought into the arena... can I buy a guard dog (25 gp) or two and bring it into the arena with me? If yes, where can I find the statistical block for a guard dog? I noticed that the Monster Manual only has entries for "Dog" and "Riding Dog".

Anyway... thanks!

Is drawing a weapon a free action in this game? Or does your above example assume the character has the "Quick Draw" feat?

Do those classes with animal companions/ familiars get to have them in the arena?

Can I spend part of my money purchasing a trained attack dog (or other animal) to take into the arena with me?

[OOC: Backposting a bit]

"Look…” said Pio, stern and steady. “You already have a fair share of our money. I suggest you count yourself lucky with what you have in your hand there. Now you'd do best and leave us alone, before you lose what you've earned."

The leader of the band of ruffians was tense. Pio could tell the man realized that he was outmatched and was looking for a way to get out of the situation while saving face.

“Perhaps you are right. AND lucky!” countered the lead thug. “We have our share and will leave you in…”

The twang of the crossbow and the sound of the bolt smashing through a nearby window came together, interrupting the ruffian.

The offender, a young female, piped up her apology, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to!”

Pio did a quick check of his family. The tension was thick, though so far, his party remained in check. He could see Llamoth was coiling up to strike, and Percy’s fiery temper was beginning to boil up. Both were cold and calculating.

“Easy everyone. Hold.” Pio spoke evenly to his family. Turning his attention back to the leader. “You and your people have slighted us twice now. Had that bolt struck true…” Pio let the ruffians fill in the unsaid threat. “Now, I DO wish to leave you in peace, but I am afraid we will need something from you to right the wrongs you have committed against us. You seem like cunning, smart folks. We are looking for information.”

[OOC: I’ll stop here. If Percy and Llamoth (or the others) give us space to talk, Pio will say something like, “We have heard a thief from Ormander’s orphanage has stolen something of value from Councilor Velch. If you have heard something of this, please speak up. Excellent information just might find you rewarded.”]

Sorry all, I'm still here. I've been wrestling with the flu for the last week and have been trying to keep up at work. So far I've been losing the battle. I'm hoping for better health tomorrow and a snow day!

My extremely apologies! Please continue to move the story onwards. I hope to post soon.

With regards to the potential fight ahead, Pio would likely tell the thug that he has already received his fair share of our wealth, and that he and his friends would be best to leave us alone. [Attempt an intimidate check]

Failing the check, Pio will attempt knock his opponents out as opposed to kill them.

Bugbears are actually ECL 4 all on their own --> 3 levels of monster plus 1 for the level adjustment. Adding 1 level of Barbarian would make them ECL 5.

I have sadness. I am leaving today for a work trip. I'll be gone until Sunday late. I had hoped to have a post up before I left, but it's not going to happen. If I can find a place to type out a post while I'm away, I'll try... otherwise, here's synopsis of what I'd post, perhaps you canmake something out of it, Almerin:

Pio would get up and welcome the half-orc (by name) to the circle. (Sorry, I forget the half-orc's name).

Going back to the discussion at hand, Pio really liked the idea of trailing the councilor, but the half-orc's logic makes better sense -- the man is probably well defended. The half-orc's suggestion to come up with a quick list of Ormander's enemies is a good idea too. Pio would follow up with a question on how the half-orc (and the group) thought we'd go about drawing up this list.

The half-orc's opening post seems to suggest she is working in Drefast. If this is true, then two more points:

1) Pio and the half-orc have likely met up from time to time in their regular drop-ins at the orphanage.

2) Does the half-orc have contacts with-in Drefast? Pio will ask the half-orc this question.

Subject: We could find another player...

but I don't think we absolutely NEED another.

If anything we could use a mage type. Possibilities could include Beguiler 4, Wizard (or Specialist 4), or some combo of Warrior 1 (Fighter or Swashbuckler) and Wizard 3 (Wizard or Specialist). A focus on problem-solving spells (like hold portal and invisibility) and battlefield control spells (like grease and color spray). Personally, I love the beguiler. (lots of skills, d6 hit points, great spell list and flavorful class abilities)

A straight cleric with buff and summoning spells would be nice too.

I agree with the "let's just pretend the fighter was never there."

Let's get this game moving. I say a one (or two) more rounds of posts with regards to "our plan". And then let's "get the truck out of Dodge".

Definitely could use a rogue... or a Beguiler! Beguiler could turn out to be REALLY handy.

So far, we've got
a sorcerer/archer (human)
a front-line melee barbarian (dwarf)
and a melee/ party healer(ish) mixed class (human)

I'm not sure if any of the others are still in.

Regardless, a sneaky-sneak, "I can get in there unseen", flanker would be pretty decent.

PLEASE NOTE: This is my suggestion... feel free to choose whatever you like. As long as you're regularly postly and contributing to the game, you're good to go!

I have sadness having read your last post. It seems these long standing members in your group have forgotten the core foundations of RPGs. In this case, they seem to be forgetting that, when we gather, the main objective is that everyone involved would have fun.

Being teased is not fun. Nor is being mistreated. And being patronized doesn't feel so good either.

My suggestion would be to talk to your regular gaming (guys) group about how you are feeling. I'd consider talking to them one-to-one on the phone (or out for coffee if that's not too weird). You seem to have a long history with them (8 years is quite a while) so hopefully they'll hear your concerns.

Otherwise, I'd say you need to make a choice: Either stay with the guys you've been gaming with for a long time... or jump ship and start something new with your girlfriends, adding guys to your group as you go.

Personally, if I were you, if the guys don't hear your concerns and your girlfriends are keen on playing, I'd jump ship and start something with the girls.

Hope this helps!

“Are you all in?”

Pio had just got the words out when there was a slight door at the door and a young girl let herself in. Her face was familiar, but Pio had forgotten her name. Olive? Ophellea? What is it?

The girl step to the edge of the circle where the group had gathered, “Hi!” she said cheerily. Then she looked directly at Pio and, as if she could read his mind, said, “Hi, Pio! It’s me, Olivia.”

Pio smiled a gentle smile, “Olivia! Of course! What would you like?”

The girl, remembering why she came, spoke quickly, “A room has been prepared for you all while you stay with us.”

“Thank you, Olivia.”

Olivia curtsied, coming up to smile at Percy. She continued to look and smile at the woman.

“Is there anything else, Olivia?”

Olivia looked back to Pio. “Nope!” she said simply with a smile and then bounded out of the room, closing the door behind her again. Silence once again descended upon the group.

After a few moments of quiet, the khord stood up to address the group, clearly agitated. “Are we going to sit here all day? Or is someone going to think of something? I think that we all know that I am not the clever one round here.”

Kastor sat back down in a huff.

Pio took a cleansing breath before he shared some of the ideas that were coming to him. “Here’s what thinking we can do. I say, let’s head over to the court house and see if we can’t find this herald that spoke with father. If there’s time, on the way back, perhaps we could speak with the authorities who investigated the theft, if there even was an investigation.

“Later, over supper, perhaps we can talk with the children about what they have heard so far. Maybe, we can go catch a drink over at the Broken Grommel Tavern?”

“Some other suggestions?”

I posted... but it didn't really offer much in the way of moving the story forward. Really just checking to see who's still playing. Are we all still here?

As for where to go from here, here's my thoughts:

1) Followup on the lead from Ormander about Velch's herald that stopped by the orphanage. Ask if he knows if there is/was any investigation into the matter of the stolen statue, and who lead(s) that investigation.

2) If need be, at some time offer to give Velch a deposit in goods and gold for additional time (i.e. offer some of my more precious equipment to him [armor, sword, etc])

3) Questioning the older (and younger children) around the orphanage to see if they have "heard" anything.

4) Visit that orphan who left to become a baker, see how things are going for him.

Other ideas?
