Topic: yet another movie thread... Subject: chick flick!
Last night, I sat down and watched Catch and Release with my wife, who had DVRed it. I knew coming in that it was a chick flick (aka romantic comedy?), so I was prepared. To be honest, I actually enjoyed the movie.
The basic premise is that the main's character's fiance dies before the two of them are to be married (I mean, RIGHT before - the movie starts with some nice imagery of the bride-to-be dressed in black at a funeral reception while workers carry out wedding flowers, decorations, etc), and she has to pick up the pieces of her life. Naturally, it would not be a romantic movie if she didn't have a new love interest, but they handle it pretty well. Turns out that the late Mister Right wasn't quite the perfect guy she (and pretty much everyone) thought that he was, which leaves her with some interesting things to deal with.
Good acting, very nice character interplay. A couple of the characters are a good bit over the top in their quirkiness, but it's okay; it helps the movie to really work. I had only two real beefs with the movie.
(1) Apparently, virtually every person in this movie is rich, or well enough off that money (which was a central theme in the movie) really doesn't matter after all... how nice for them. Made it a bit tough for me to identify with them, and took away some of the pressure I would think real people might feel. Of course, I know that there are lots of rich people out there... maybe this was aimed at them?
(2) An otherwise smart, well put together script could not resist from falling into the formulatic romantic comedy trap of inventing a conflict between the main character and the love interest, and as is pretty much always the case, said conflict comes from one person saying something they really didn't mean, and the other person finds out about it and takes it out of context, causing a big rift. Will they patch it up? Of course they will, this is a romantic comedy.
In a movie that dealt with an intense situation - and thus, some deep issues - in what felt like a genuine, fulfilling way, this conflict seemed very high school and shallow in comparison.
Geez, what do I think I am, a movie critic?
This is not my favorite end of the movie spectrum, there's a reason they are called "chick flicks," but all in all, this was a good (if somewhat odd) movie. You could do much worse for a date film.

Topic: bragging on my child... Subject: new bragging
We've been doing the baseball thing again, and my son has played very well, so I thought I'd update a year-old thread to brag some more.
In the first post in this thread, I metnioned how Caleb had a chance to be a dominant player in this league during his ten year old season, and that has proven to be true. If he isn't the best player in the entire league, he's certainly in the top three.
He has hit very consistently, and hit for power. For the first time in his life, he's been called upon to play shortstop in a fair number of innings (for those who do not know baseball, the shortstop is uaually the best defensive player on the team). He has been an elite pitcher - had a four inning, one hit game this past weekend.
Last night was his best offensive night ever. 4 for 4, with a single, two doubles, and a grand slam. The slam was especially huge since our team was down 10-5 at the time with two out. Those four runs put us right back in the game, and we went on to win.
Anyway, there's my bragging.

Topic: RDINN Feature Updates/ Suggestions/ Bugs Subject: PM folders
Alright, ya bunch of whiners, I have implemented private message folders. You'll notice the "add a folder" link under your "You are here -->> blah blah blah.... click here to view sent messages," etc.
Now, the PM folder has a dropdown box. Change it from Inbox to one of your newly added folders, and voila! You are there.
To move messages among folders, scroll down to the bottom of the page. The old mass delete option has been updated to a "move to folder" option. To delete, simply leave it on trash. To move to a new folder, pick the appropriate one from the dropdown.
Wanna kill a folder? Navigate to it and use the "delete folder" link that appears where "add a folder" goes in the regular inbox. If you goof up and delete a folder without moving the messages first, have no fear - they are simply returned to your main inbox.
You cannot delete your main inbox, no matter what you do, so don't even try, Grugg.
There ya go, folks. Organize your PMs to your little heart's content.

Topic: some questions Subject: answers!
1. I keep notepad docs with current hitpoints, quick reference on xp, and any assorted notes that I need. Once or twice, I've resorted to excel spreadsheets, but that is rare. I do keep full copies of character sheets in doc files.
2. I usually ask for 1-2 posts per week at a minimum in my games (though we never seem to keep to it). I do not set max post counts.
3. See #1.
4. Sure. Mostly for fun, but I do applaud good posts and smite moronic and/or intentionally cringeworthy ones.

It's his ship. Do realize that this is a military mission, and a military ship, during wartime. Science will be working mostly with tactical and such, I'd guess.

Topic: Star Trek: Charon Staff Fulfillment Subject: absolutely
I know for a fact that we have room. I want to say that one of the vessels still needs a helmsman; I thin kthat CSO is open on both ships, and I know that the Cerberus needs a chief engineer (well, I think so).
There are other spots, too, I am certain.

Topic: What Games are You Planning? Subject: Audalis
I'm predictable, no doubt. As soon as my Guiding Light adventure wraps up, I'll be launching another Audalis game.
I'd love to run a campaign, but it's seems a lot more condusive for my flaky self to stick to adventures only.

Topic: yet another movie thread... Subject: I want this time restored to my life!
Last night, I sat down to watch a movie with my wife. She had DVRed Wicker Park. And to think, I could have watched four episodes of Golden Girls reruns in the same timespan! Or painted a wall and watched it do a lot of drying!
Yes, folks, it was that bad, and worse. The script was horifically choppy - if you like flashbacks, plot jumps, and scenes in a random, jumbled order (to the point that all sense of time's flow is meaningless), then you'll like this aspect of the movie. If you are sane, it will bother you to no end.
Basic premise of the movie: boy meets girl, falls in love. Girl moves to Europe for a job, but plans to return to her love after the end of the job run (she's a dancer). Girl's best friend falls in love with him, spends the next two years doing everything she can to keep the couple apart and poison all feelings they have for one another, so that she can swoop in and claim boy. Everyone involved in these two people's lives is hurt by this (boy, girl, stalker best friend girl, boy's best friend, boy's future fiancee who he has to drop once he realizes that girl did not abandon him like he thought).
Of course, it is nowhere near as clear as all of this until near the movie's end, since the scenes are, as stated, out of order, and shuffled even more from the varying perspectives of the characters.
I've seen this portrayed as a psycological thriller. Uh, yeah. Whatever. I will grant that it seems everyone in this film is obsessed, and that both boy and girl's best friend are probably mentally ill, but a thriller this is not. I'm angry at this movie. Send it to someone you don't like.

I have no issue with the pace of the game. If you think we need to go slow, we go slow. you can have everyone sit tight until Charlie hacks her way in, no worries.
Let me note that there are no "data disks" - I apologize if I have miscommunicated. There are video disks containing what would roughly correlate to security camera video, but any data will be on the server (unless, perhaps, it is stored somewhere away from teh main base computers?).

Topic: RDI T-shirts Subject: lemme see
I can do the logo on the golf shirt. Let me check on the avatar of awesome idea... I want to say that to get that color shirt, you have to go with the heavier (i.e. more expensive) tees.
Edit: yep. Lightweight tees come in white, black, brown, khaki, ash, navy, and red.
Heavyweight are available in white, black, orange, purple, red, yellow, bright green, forest green, chocolate, burgundy, ash, royal blue, navy, natural, and sky blue. They also cost $4.00 more per shirt (I can probably wiggle that to $3.50 more).

Topic: The Guiding Light Q&A Subject: nice interplay!
I like how you're handling the remifications of Varuna's faith, YeOlde. I'm not sure that he's 100% correct - the Audalis pantheon is not one of warm fuzziness - but I'm not sure that he's wrong, either. Either way, he's doing what he thinks is right, even when inconvenient, which is to be applauded.
Nice job!

Topic: RDI T-shirts Subject: shirt stuff
I can do the 3XL shirt w/logo and your name on the back. It'll be $24.
The expenses come from the following:
3XL costs more to start with
Printing on both sides costs more
Printing a digital image AND text costs more
Let me know if you want me to do it. White text for the name?
As for the other... I'm afraid that design is too complicated, at least for now. Would need a good artist to do it in a vector format.

Topic: Continuing Where We Last Left Off Q&A Subject: misunderstood?
Hey, I don't want to paint you badly. Let's take stock.
1. The mages are all but out of mana. Maye they could have been more conserving, but then again, most of our fights have been hard enough as is; we might be dead if not for their casting.
2. We've been repeatedly smacked down by the lackey villains. No reason to think that will stop now.
3. Arien is going mano y mano with a boss, and is getting it handed to him. Clearly outclassed and on the losing end, he has to hope for divine/DM intervention or a die rolling hot streak of legendary proportions. And the dice are ice cold of late.
I'm hoping the dragon from the silver screen moment is a positive thing, but something in me screams something about a frying pan and a fire.
So sure, I could see how the empirical evidence above is leading to you being misunderstood, Al.
