I'd go so far as to say that a tactful bit of railroading is almost vital to any game.
Otherwise, you get PCs wandering around with no goal whatsoever. Yay, let's tour the countryside, isn't this fun?

Topic: Olan's WDW Trivia App Subject: heh
An app for the Inn would be pretty nifty. I've thought about it... but seeing as how labors of love tend to get behind labors of payment, it may be some time.

I think the mana system has been on the to do list for at least five years.
Perhaps even longer than me leaving the Christmas graphic up!

Topic: Review of 5e Subject: well
I had already seen a preview of this via email, but I'll report my general thoughts here.
That's a great first look - it sounds like I need to spend some time researching the new system. Is it possible that I might get current in a game? Talk about a heady concept - I haven't seriously considered this since original 3e (and I scrapped that thought pretty quick at the time).
I'll want to see more, but I won't rule the new system out directly out of hand.
I'm really interested to see how the expanded class rules work. I have to admit, I have some preconceived notions that are tough for me to get around.
For instance, if there is a mechanic that allows self healing (like the surges from 4e), I'm less likely to care. Sorry, but I personally *want* different classes to have drastic differences between them. Sorry, I don't buy that you can heal yourself by wishing really hard.
If this truly is more like the old 2e ruleset (which I fully grant had its own warts, hence the houseruled version I play)... then yeah, I'll be interested.

Topic: Has anyone looked into D&D 5? Subject: well
Tell you what - I'll read the rules with as open a mind as I can manage. But you have to admit, so far Wizards/Hasbro has not exactly nailed it.
And regardless of how the actual game is, that "review" was awful. No substance at all.

Topic: Has anyone looked into D&D 5? Subject: ugh
That link was a ridiculous, Buzzfeed style clickbait post. Will the new D&D be the best edition yet? Don't read this article for that answer, as I'll just touch on a couple of very superficial items and fail to address anything related to the headline!
I mean, lifestyle, seriously?
Let me confirm my bias: I am very old school when it comes to D&D. As far as I'm concerned, 3e screwed up as least as much as it fixed, and 4e is an abomination (basically a MMORPG on paper) that does not deserve the name D&D (every class can heal themselves, okay).
To that end, I have really, really low expectations for D&D5 (D&D?).
Here's to hoping I'm surprised.

Topic: Olan's WDW Trivia App Subject: A WDW Trivia App
I am currently in the process of creating a trivia app for Walt Disney World. I know it's not exactly a crossover audience for the Inn, but I thought I'd mention it here.
I plan to release it for iPhone and Android, maybe Windows phone. I figure that I'll go the normal route of a free to download, ad supported version, as well as a very inexpensive, ad free version.
Currently, I could use some iOS beta testers. If you happen to (a) be interested in this and (b) own an iPhone, please contact me via email at [email protected].
I'll need your name, your email address, and your iOS UDID (unique device ID). You can get the UDID through iTunes, or by going to a site like http://www.easy-udid.com.
Basically, I have it working, I just need people to play games to make sure that the questions are feeding properly. I'd also like feedback on look/feel and on features.
Thanks!

Topic: Godzilla! Subject: Godzilla!
Took my daughter to see the new Godzilla this past weekend as part of a graduation celebration.
My expectations were pretty tempered, seeing as how the last Godzilla movie was a giant gecko or something, and was just... meh.
This one? So very well done.
It had its warts - the movie went out of the way to show animals and children escaping impossible situations (don't want people to feel bad), some plot points felt forced, the main character was pretty one dimensional, the darned monsters didn't get as much screen time as we all might have wanted - but when all was said and done, it was very entertaining and stuck very true to the source material. Heck, it made you care about the fate of Godzilla, which is a neat trick for a CGI dinomonster.
Can heartily recommend this as a summer popcorn flick.

We've had some issues that have killed my online time. Year end, an FDA audit, and now, we've had some baby scares. I've not abandoned this game, and will resume regular posting shortly.
Sorry for sucking, folks. I'm dying to press this on.
