Subject: Kaimelle ~ Tall.... really tall...

The big man began wrenching on the doors to the cell. Metal creaked and protested as his hands attempted to pry the bars apart. With a small sound of disgust? Its so hard to tell with nonelves, the small man motioned for him to stand aside. He produced an oilcloth that bundled oddly shaped tools, and set to work on the lock.

Kaimelle couldn’t help but stare at the Halfling. She knew it was too good to be true, knew that guards were going to clop down the hall and incarcerate her would be liberators. The lock continued to make clicking noises, and she saw the Halfling glance up at her before going back to work on the device. After a few moments, he yanked the lock free and swung open the door. Kaimelle’s position in the room allowed the door to just miss her; too many times had she been brutally knocked down by a violent shove with the bars.

The Halfling reached in and took her hand. His palm felt warm against her icy cold skin, and he squeezed and pulled at the same time to get her moving. Her bare feet began to move against the hard stone floor, and she stepped out into the hallway. A breeze seemed to rush around her, rush through her; a penetrating wind reached out and touched her soul.

The Ether.

Kaimelle slowly closed her eyes at the familiar sensation that had for so long been cut off from her. The Halfling was still holding her hand and speaking softly to her, "I'm sorry my Lady. We cannot guide you to the surface yet. We believe there are others down here help captive in situations not unlike your own. As such, as much as I would like to bring you to safety, we cannot. Our job is not yet done here."

His voice hesitated, "That being said, you are, of course, free to leave on your own." She could feel his body shift, though she kept her eyes shut, still savoring the renewed connection, "That is the way out. I would warn you though that we fought some rather nasty fellows on our way here, and I am honestly uncertain if there are more out there. You are also free to accompany us if that is your wish. I, at least, will do my best to keep you safe pretty one." He released his hold on her and moved away.

Her eyes flashed open. His words finally seemed to penetrate the Mith’ganni’s mind. …there are others down here …. more out there… rather nasty fellows…

“I will come with you,” Kaimelle said to the Halfling and the large man as she followed them down the corridor. Her voice sounded unusual, as if lack of use made it a little more husky. “There are many who need to be repaid some of their kindness.” Her mind wandered to the refugees she had been traveling with, and not for the first time , doubted that any would still be alive. Her end of the corridor had been empty aside from herself; probably reserved for those who harbored a connection with the Ether.

A figure loomed at the end of the hallway, and the Mith’ganni had to suppress a desire to call upon her magicks. The two that walked with her regarded him with friendliness, but the sight of another tall, large male set her on edge. She attempted to calm her nerves as he openly stared at her with shockingly clear blue eyes. The mess of curly brown hair softened the would-be hard face, and he quickly shifted his eyes towards the door. His deep voice directed towards the other big man, "I'll watch the entrance way, if you give our lockpick some company."

Torn between staying with one large human that towered feet above her, and going with a different towering human, Kaimelle decided to stand near the entrance. Her mind was too frazzled to make any concrete decisions, and not moving back and forth seemed to be the best plan she could formulate. The Mith’ganni attempted to keep the Ether at the forefront of her mind as she gazed silently out the door.

Subject: Raina ~ Begging for Booze

The rapier slide into the creature like a knife slicing through gossamer. A piercing shriek of pain blasted through the sky, and then all went quiet. The wyvern stopped struggling. For a heart stopping moment, Raina hung in the air with the dead beast. She blinked, and gravity started to catch up.

Time began flowing like a perfect duel, where each opponent saw every move clearly. Each motion was done like it had been performed through water. The wyvern began to rotate onto its back. Her blade slide effortlessly out of its chest. The burglar’s feet moved to rest onto of the creature. Her mind was a calm sea against the wind around her. She looked up for one last look at her companions, and her eyes locked with Heironymous. As if in response, he flung a length of rope towards her. Raina’s left hand shot out with reflex, and time seemed to speed up.

The rope and the cleric held her weight, and she seemed to rocket towards the cliff face. Her body slammed into the side, and she managed to get her feet on its slippery surface. The process was awkward since she had no way of securing her rapier, and once the cleric pulled her to the ledge, she collapsed onto the side of it. Poison was coursing through her veins, and she winced at the sudden return to reality feeling she was getting.

“Praise be to Elarii,” she coughed.

She moved a little bit further into the ledge and rolled on her back, puffing out breath.

"Wow. Nice jump"

She raised her head to look at the cleric. “Nice throw,” she managed before letting her head fall back to the ground. The mage thanked the half orc, and appeared in her line of vision. She stared up at his dark face as he asked if she was alright.

“Yeah, I suppose,” she panted, her words coming out in short spurts, “I’m no longer careening through the air, and not a pile of bones and goo at the bottom of this. So yeah, I’m good.” Her dark blue eyes closed as she tried to master her fatigue.

Heironymous seemed anxious to keep moving, "Hmmm . . . no healing spells. Before we do much else, I'd suggest we start by looking around this shelf and the extra edges."

"Don't you think we should rest first?” said Quarlin, “Then....we can scout out the nearest cave for shelter and to determine if the caves are connected by a tunnel network. That would circumvent some of the climbing that apparently needs to be done. Besides we don't need any of our heaviest team members precariously hugging the side of a mountain. Someone light and fleet of foot to do the scouting."

The cleric responded somewhere to her left, "I'm not comfortable resting until we know the ledge is safe. It doesn't look like a big search. As for who goes out on the ledges, I'd love to leave that for those less encumbered, but after what we just went through I'm not real comfortable volunteering someone else. I'll look at the big ledge were on now first. Then help with the side shelves if needed."

“I’m light,” Raina said, still not opening her eyes, “Creeping along ledges is what I do. Just… give me a minute or two to catch my breath. Maybe one of you guys could look at my back. I got hit a couple of times by my pilot, and that’s a really hard place for me to try and clean up on my own.” She sat up and began unbuckling the pack on her back, “There should be some water in there to at least clean some wounds.” Her fingers moved to undoing her leather armor, and she muttered, “What I wouldn’t give for a bottle of liquor right about now.”

“I didn’t mean you couldn’t look at the bloody PDA, I was referring you trying to access whatever mysterious hidden files on it that you seem to think are there. I just don’t want you to mess up the blasted thing. But by all means, Danyael, keep it. As the team celebrated in the locker room, the Canadian came bursting through the door. Katie felt an immediate hostile threat and lamented the fact that her gear had been taken away from here. Here it comes. We just slaughtered your team. I hope to God you keep your end of the deal. Much to her surprise, he wore a big grin across his face. Well, she thought it was a big grin, it was hard to tell under that tangled mat of a beard.

”Yoo played a hell of a game out there, ya' hoseheads. Guess I was underestimating yoo, best game I've seen since '93, eh?” The Canadian sat down on a bench and stretched out his legs, ”Now I suppose yoo're looking for some help with yoor job for the big man up in Fantastico HQ then, eh?”

As everyone was nodding, the door was flung open again. Vitali came crashing into the room with a duffle bag in his hand. As the Canadian was giving him an ugly look, Katie felt herself blush high on her cheekbones. Ignoring Vitali for the moment, the Canadian continued.

”Now Garnet, he's the big moose around here, eh? But I'm sure yoo lot already knew that then, eh?” More nods, ”Used to move the white stuff around for the hoser, I did, but lately, he seems a bit...oof, ya know? Like something's going on in that head of his, don't know what though, but I don't like it” The door banged open again, and a couple of guys dressed in Wildfire outfits drug in their gear.

Thank God. Katie thought it might be tactless to grab her stuff while the Canadian was giving them the information they required. She almost had to sit on her hands to prevent herself from getting up.

”Anywhos, ol' Darius is starting to get paranoid. I think he knows that hosehead Fantasti's wanting his city back or something, and he's gone deep. No one's seen him leave the Supa-Fly stadium in weeks, and that place is wrapped up tighter than a Nunavut hooker, yoo know what I mean, eh?”

No one spoke. In fact, no one really knew what he was saying, the creative obscenities were obscuring any type of semblance of regular speech, and making it damn impossible to decipher. Katie pulled out the PDA from her pocket to make sure it was still working after the beating she had taken on the ice, giving her an excuse to look busy while they tried to work out what language the Canadian was speaking.

”Going in there straight on, is fixing to get ya' killed, eh? So I had a better idea, then. Garnet's two main distribution houses are a little light on the guards, eh? Been funnelling the hosers off to his arena for a while now. Maybe if yoo went to them, and caused some trooble, he'd be a little less inclined to let them go shortstaffed, eh? Here.” He extended a hand towards her, and she passed him the PDA, “I'll give yoo lot the addresses.” The big man fiddled around with it before tossing it back to her.

”Now, yoo play a hell of a game, but yoo killed some of my best boys out there, eh?”His upbeat demeanor vanished in a heartbeat ”So, I'd be suggesting to get oot. Now.”

Not waiting for their welcome to wear out, Katie got up immediately and grabbed her duffel. She trooped with the rest of the crew out of the stadium.

Once everyone was gathered outside, Katie dived into her bag of gear. As Downhouser was pointing to each one of them in turn and silently mouthing something, a loud series of profanities and shouts echoed out across the lot. Danyael was hurrying towards them. Katie ejected the mag to one of her Desert Eagles and watched him approach. He had lipstick on his neck and was reaching up to wipe it off.

She gestured at his neck with her empty gun, “Looks like you missed a spot, Romeo.” The magazine clicked home and Katie drove it home into its holster.

Danyael maintained his grin a little bit longer before clearing his throat. "Well done. At the very least we reduced the capability of another potentially criminal group. But, despite fear for my life, I must admit it was just a little bit fun." His grin reappeared.

"Now, correct me if I'm wrong but it seems we have two warehouse choices right? Katie, do you mind if I take a look at the PDA for a minute?" Katie handed it over, and he began scrolling through it.

Danyael turns to her and continued "I'd like to hang on to the PDA for the time being if that's alright. I'm a bit curious about these "access Denied" messages. Perhaps I can do smething about that."

“I’d rather you didn’t,” Katie replied with her hand extended out, “I trust you about as far as I can throw you, Danyael. I’d rather not have you jacking up our source of information for this city.”

"Since out friend the Canadian cautioned us against a frontal assault, I suggest a different way. One of us will have to be a buyer or distributor." Danyael began, “That would be me or Katie." He turns to her as he continues. "No offense intended, as I'm sure to lose a filling if it were, but your temperment is not very well suited for a deal like this. Though your obvious feminine charms may be helpful... if you choose to use them of course." His grin returned and she had to bit her lip from the retort that sprang to her mind.

"The rest of you should do what you do best. Intimidate them and freak them out a bit. Percy, you should be particularly good at that last part I think. What do you guys think?"

The big man was first to reply, “I think it is a good plan. But this time we don’t let them take our guns. Otherwise I’ll refuse to go in. I’ll find a back door then, and the plan won’t be the plan anymore.”

Yeah, I don’t really feel like losing my guns again. She gave Downhouser an appraising look as he continued on with his idea.

He nodded towards Virago, “He should be your tester. You should have one of those if you want to be the real thing.”

Probably the only one capable of snorting a cup or more of that crap without over dosing.

“You should also make some kind of appointment. You can’t just drive up and barge in. ‘s Not how it works. We need to find a small time dealer lower on the ladder, who’ll direct us to where we need to be.”

He looked lost in thought before a wide smile spread across his face, “Unless you WANT to barge in. I’d be game for that.”

From some inner pocket, Downhouser produced a cornflake bar and began munching on it. It reminded her that she hadn’t eaten for over a day, unless you counted the dreamsicle from Percy’s freezer. She like his plan; simple, easy to follow, and it seemed like he had done something like this before.

“I like it, Downhouser. But where do we find a small time dealer? I don’t know about you guys, but I’m not in the habit of buying drugs.” She wondered if any of the casinos she frequented had drug rings placed in the bowels of the establishment.

“Come to think on it, The Blue Room might have some of that happening in the back rooms. It’s mainly a club, but it has a couple of poker tables and some slot machines. It’s not too far from here.” Her stomach gave a small rumble, “I also wouldn’t mind a bite to eat on the way. Might be able to get some greasy pub grub while we’re there.”

The deal seemed to end well, especially when Sellers added another thousand credits to their upfront price. He slid a card over to Jason and continued detailing out the finalities of the job. His voice had gotten real quiet, but she made no move to sit closer.

Sellers rose up suddenly and looked like he was going to fly like a bat out of hell when another person barked his name, "Norm Sellers? Is that you?"

Sellers stopped short, and turned to face the man. Tess couldn’t see his expression, but it was easy to guess by the nervous pitch in his voice, "Howard! What you doing here?"

"I was going to ask you the same thing Norm." the man apparently called Howard replied.

"Right! I'm ...right. Red-heads!" He said, pointing a stained finger towards Grace, "Can't resist them right? But she brushes me off right? Never had the luck with the ladies like you do right?'

Jason made a slight move towards Tess and gestured at the mechanic. She set her glass of water down and placed her hand on Grace’s arm, “Easy, Xiao Ya.” Her dark eyes followed the men as they exited the bar, and she removed her hand. Not our problem…. Yet. she thought darkly.

Almost immediately the sounds of engines touching down filled the little cantina.
"A.S.R.E.V.” Grace said to the crew as the engines were powering down, "I know those engines anywhere."

“Alliance or Feds,” Ken mumbled to himself. Oh tian ah, not this again. Alliance, Feds, Browncoats, Guildmembers, who’s next on the slab for you? Clergymen?

“This can’t be good,” He continued, looking around the table, “we should get the guay out of here!”

Tess couldn’t see the immediate problem. They had a pass to be here, and it wasn’t like they were starting a fight in the bar. Or selling narcotics. Sure, the pass might be a little expired, but the statement ‘until emergency is over’ was pretty open ended.

Ken was staring pointedly through the window at the ASREV. Ta ma duh, I know you’re paranoid, but you could be a little less obvious.

“It’s Feds,” he said with a note of relief in his voice.

“Well Jon, it looks like we got our deal. I’m going head back to the boat and make sure everything checks out. Grace, Tess would you mind coming with me? I might need your help.” Jason tipped back his wine glass and emptied the contents. “No sense in letting good wine go to waste,” he stood up and gathered the rest of the wine up, “Bartender, what’s the damage for our drinks?”

“Aye, that sounds like a good idea,” Ken said, also downing the rest of his wine, “I think I will accompany you three back to the ship.”

Tess was eyeing Jon, attempting to decide what he was going to do. She wasn’t one to tuck her tail between her legs and run back to the ship at the sign of a shiny badge. Besides, with Ken hightailing his pi gu back to the Destiny, it never hurt to have another gun on hand.

“I think I’ll stay with the Captain a bit longer,” she said and gestured towards her unfinished glass of wine, “and maybe enjoy the, uh, fine jiu.”

As the rest of the crew started on their way out of the cantina, Tess took another drink of water and looked over to Jon.

“So, are we going to give them the tour?” she asked as she rolled her eyes toward the window.

Subject: Kaimelle ~ The Fourth Wall

Drip. Drip. Drip. Drip.

A moldy smell lingered in the air. Like most dungeons, this one had the stereotypical leaky water. She kept her face to the wall. Sometimes that helped her forget that she was in a tiny cell. Sometimes she could forget the suffocating feeling. Sometimes.

How long have I been here? When will they come again?

Her composure was ebbing away with each passing night. She couldn’t properly enter her meditation without seeing the stars, she wondered if she would actually slip into a human like sleep if she ever got out of this. The Mith’ganni had been visited several times by her captors, and none of the experiences had been pleasant. Bruises showed purple and green in sharp contrast to her pale skin. She had fought back every time despite the insistence that it would be better if she didn’t. The number of times she had been knocked out was lost to her memory.

Sometimes it happened when her meal was brought. They had taken to waiting outside her cell until her hunger broke her and she reached for the food. This didn’t happen often; she could smell their stink lingering outside the bars, and refused to touch her meal. Most often they would come down erratically, in twos or threes and take what was never theirs. They tormented her like this for an hour or so almost every day. Is it every day? It’s so hard to know.

Desperation streaked through her as she sat listening to the dripping water. The elf reached out towards the Ether once again, but found nothing. She had remembered Leanna once telling her that there were dead zones on this planet where one could be cut off from the Ether. Was this one of those places?

Volla, 1015

Tonight we had again discussed the perils of using the Ether. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say that Leanna was trying to dissuade me from casting. It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve been faced with that. At least the discussion was something other than burning out. She informed me that I needed to have at least rudimentary training in combat. Upon asking her why this was necessary, she began telling me of all of the times that I wouldn’t be able to use the Ether. Aside from the typical “You’ve used it too much today”, she told me of the Dead Zones. Places where nothing could be cast.

These places occur naturally, but once in a great while a mage can create them permanently. These are mostly found in places where great wars occurred in an attempt to stop enemy wizards from using the Ether against them. Perilous things sometimes roam in these areas, and nothing can be done to stop them magically. I must remember to ask her more, there seemed to be a particular story behind her words...
From The Memoirs of Kaimelle Tir’Anoron Part I

A loud groan from the prison door ripped through the air. She gave an involuntary wince at the thought of the captors coming to visit her cell. Footfalls echoed down the corridor, and unbidden to the Mith’ganni, her breath began to quicken with anxiety and her yellow eyes began to brim with tears.

It’s finally happening. I have lost control.

The steps stopped in front of her cell, but she refused to look around. Light illuminated the tiny chamber. Her body scrunched closer to the wall as she pulled her legs up around her middle. The elf hugged them tightly as if to protect the soft portions of her body.

A booming voice filled the cell, "Calm now scared one. I'm not to be hurtin' you, nor will anyone else now. My companions and I be crackin a few skulls to get in here, and we'll be crackin a few more before we leave there be no doubt, but for now you're safe. Can you stand lass? What's your name?"

The Mith’ganni slowly turned her head away from the wall and looked over her shoulder to the door. Her eyes shone faintly yellow in the torchlight, and it was easy to see the blood shot veins etched into them. A large purple bruise encircled her left eye. The light made it hard to see who was speaking, but she could tell it was a man by the voice and he looked to be another captor. His large form with the outline of weapons suggested as much.

This is a ploy. I will not let them get my hopes up. She continued to watch the cell door, but made no move to stand.

More footsteps hurriedly approached the first human. I knew it. More for the fun. She had just decided to turn away again when another voice spoke harsh against the silence.

"Hey! Back away you big brute. You're scaring her!" A form half the size or less then the first bobbed into view and spoke up towards the big man. Her eyes began accommodating for the light. The large man had red hair that almost appeared to be on fire in the torchlight. The smaller one looked almost childlike, but his demeanor suggested otherwise. She guessed that he was a Halfling, something that was not found in this dungeon walking around on its own.

They both looked concerned; the Halfling continued to approach the door and spoke softly to her, "It's alright my Lady. We have not come to harm you." He looked around behind him, which suggested that there were more of them.

"Can you stand?"

This time she complied. Slowly getting to her feet, she turned to face the bars. Her once sturdy homemade shirt and pants were heavily torn and dirty. The world spun for a moment and she could feel the small walls closing in on her.

Her eyes turned slightly wild for a moment before whispering, “Please...get...me...out.”
