Dear Ogre,

My party members take way too much time talking to villagers and not enough time for killing! How do I get them back into Hack-n-Slash mode?

Whoops. Sorry about that, Nomad. Guess I didn't write that very well. Just going up by myself was my intent; then having Gronz and I assist you up to the top.

Additionally, tying it (wrapping it) around the waist seemed like the easiest and fastest way to get that rope to the top.

Subject: Raina ~ Climbing the Cliff Carelessly for a Chance at Covering her Cohorts

Heironymus began telling his tale, and it was easy to hear the sarcasm and frustration in his words. It was refreshing to get a straight answer after all of the muddled information she had received since being brought to Vorlance’s estate.

"And now I find myself here,” the cleric mused, “I know little of why I am here, only that I keep getting buffeted from one situation beyond my control to another. And how do you find yourself in our group?"

Her hand paused and hovered slightly over the leather as she looked back at Heironymus, wondering how much to tell him. He had, after all, been forward with her. Yes, but you don’t know these people at all. She inwardly winced at memory of the last time she saw her sister. Better be vague.

“Mmmm,” the noise came deep from her throat, “my story sounds very much the same, minus the prison break.” She smiled faintly before settling herself down for the night. Although that’s not the half of it, is it?

The continuous rain made sleep difficult to find. Waking up to it the next morning was even worse. Raina pulled on her gear and stared up at the looming cliff. She longed for a hot cup of tea. Perfect weather for a nice morning climb. The face of the cliff looked unyielding, but a plausible path could just be made out in the rain. This certainly wasn’t like climbing a stone wall up to a window, but the precise foot placement and slow work was reminiscent of the task.

Relief began washing over Raina’s tired limbs as the top began to creep closer. The treacherous climb so far hadn’t claimed any of the group, and the plateau carried a promise of rest and nourishment. A screech rent the air. Black leather creaked as she looked over her shoulder towards the sound. Wings could just be made out silhouetted against the starlight. A curse escaped her lips. At least it has stopped raining.

Quarilin broke the party’s silence, "Climbing like this is suicide, folks, but I do have an Idea. If one of you would climb up next to me we could each use a free hand to help each other tie my rope onto a crossbow bolt which I could fire at and over the nearest out cropping or maybe into the stone as a make shift piton. It'll be risky, cause we could lose the rope all together, but its all over anyway if those flying whatsits above us decide to have lunch while we are here. what say you?"

True to his nature, the half-orc did not reply but instead pushed on ahead up the cliff.

“He’s got the right idea,” Raina said to the others, nodding upwards towards Gronz. She had pushed herself to the physical limit before, and that hadn’t been a matter of life or death. This situation definatly was, although the makeshift piton might be more on the side of death. She inched towards Quarlin, “Tie that rope around my waist, and between the half orc and myself, we’ll get you guys to the top without as much risk.”

((OOC: A.) If Quarlin goes for it, Raina will help tie the rope around her waist, remove one of her daggers and place it in her teeth [oh yeah ^_^], and follow Gronz as quickly and safely as she can using her Climb and Acrobatic Skill. Once at the top, she’ll assist Gronz in hauling at least Quarlin up (I know, no climb skill) and assisting/hauling Heironymus up the cliff. For upcoming battle, it’ll be crossbow, then rapier if they come in for a landing (while trying to be as stealthy as possible. I know this might not be possible depending on terrain and where she’s at when the battle begins).

B.) If Quarlin doesn’t go for it, it will be much the same but sans Quarlin’s rope. If Gronz produces his rope at the top she’ll help, but she won’t suggest it (because she doesn’t know he has it!) but instead prepare to battle the birds of prey. ))

Subject: Raina ~ Silence is staggering

The mansion stood majestically against the trees as the group left the grounds. Raina turned her head to catch one last glance as the gate slammed shut. Vorlance was striding back across the grounds, but it was getting increasingly difficult to see him. What seemed to be heat waves shimmered in front of the estate, and soon after the entire property disappeared. The hairs on the back of her neck rose. This was not where they picked her up.

The one who had introduced himself Quarlin was the first to speak up, "I think that we should travel in a "T" formation, with Gronz and Heironymous on either side of the druid so she can track if necessary with some immediate protection. The rogue and I will hang back."

“Raina. My names is Raina.” she flipped her dark braid behind a shoulder and continued to scan the landscape, “Did anyone else notice how far we’ve traveled in just a few steps?”

The day drug on as the little party continued through the trees in silence. Raina took the opportunity to contemplate her new companions. Everything felt rather awkward, especially since she had been thrown into the mix just the day before. Events were spiraling out of control, showing nothing but two paths that both had potentially bad endings. No one that she was now traveling with seemed to like the circumstances, but again, all had been silent since they left the mansion.

Once they reached a suitable place to camp for the night, she assisted Quarlin with setting up the area, and started on cooking something hot for dinner. After the meal was done, she loaded up two plates, brought one to the mage that was engrossed in his books and sat down with hers. Silent chewing dominated the area. She didn’t feel the need to break it, her mind worked best when there was little distraction. Or a tremendous amount of it. After finishing her meal, she quietly stripped off her armor and began to clean the leather. It was unnecessary; the armor had been cleaned multiple times while she was at Vorlance’s mansion, but it kept her occupied.

“So I haven’t had a chance to ask,” Raina said into the quiet, “how did you all end up at Master Vorlance’s estate?”

Subject: Plan of action

Main goal: Score, and score often. Along with regular forehand shots, she’ll try for backhand shots to try and confuse their goalie, and hopefully pull it off because she’s fast. In addition, she’ll try feints to confuse the defense, and maybe feed a player or two to Downhouser.

In the event that she might be checked, she’ll try to dodge and hook the opposing players in an attempt to trip them. If they are tall enough, she’ll duck and try to go between their legs (we used to have a real short local guy pull that off on the rink ~ awesome!) If someone comes up behind her, she’ll hip toss to throw them off balance when they are close enough. Maybe if someone is coming to check her straight into the boards she would either hip toss as well or just dodge out of the way.

I’m defiantly exploiting how fast she is even though she has a *decent* physical score.

Subject: Katie ~ Sketchy skating and strategy

Its true. Sport fanatics really are crazier.

Kathryn always enjoyed a good beat down on the ice rink, but this was a little over the top. A scream echoed around the stadium, which was immediately cut off by a second clomp and grunt of approval from one of the Wildfires. A body check was issued to another thug, who was unceremoniously smeared across the Plexiglas. His body twitched feebly until he received an additional blow from a hockey stick. The horn sounded again as the final junkie flew over backwards with a puck embedded in his forehead.

”GOOD GAME BOYS! Now, where were we with yoo hosers, eh?”

Danyael spoke up, "Now, I believe we were about to come to an arrangement were we not?" One of the goons gave him an ugly look. What the hell?

”Right, yoo lot were looking for help, eh? Well I'll tell you what. Yoo lot do better than those hosers out there...”, he waved towards the rink. A zamboni was whirring around the ice, picking up body parts, . ” the game, and I'll do my best to hell yoo lot aboot in your job for the big man, eh?”

As soon as he finished, the goons began hustling them towards the visitor’s bench. This is happening way too fast. she thought as she was relieved of her weapons. Not even time to stretch! She grabbed a hair tie out of a pocket in her coat and pulled her hair into a tight bun. After selecting a small pair of skates, she began tightly lacing them up to support her ankles. There had been a couple of times that she had played hockey with her brothers, but mostly their chosen sport had been soccer. Her knowledge of the sport had been earned from betting on the games a few years ago, and finding out that she really enjoyed the violence of the whole thing. It struck Katie as cruel irony that she would experience the violence first hand. At least she got to keep her coat, it might serve as extra protection.

The player that tossed the skates over to the team called up at the Canadian, ”Boss, they ain't got enough guys for a team, eh? They're one short!”

The Canadian voice responded within moments, ”Well we gotta giv'em a chance to make it fair, eh? Bring out that worthless russian cousin of my wife, eh?

Fair? Russian? Kathryn was momentarily dumbstruck as a ruggedly handsome man stepped out from one of the dressing rooms. His black hair was swept behind his ears, and his clothes seemed to bulge in odd places. The Russian skated around a little bit before stopping in front of the group. He looked at each one of them in turn, and she felt her face flush as his eyes met hers. He muttered something foreign under his breath before turning to face the rink again.

The loudspeaker crackled as a young woman came out to sing the national anthem. What nationality it was couldn’t be determined, but she seemed to be enjoying herself as she sang it. The Wildfire captain skated out to give the singer a hug and, in the process, gave Danyael a murderous glare. Kathryn frowned. That seems to be becoming increasingly frequent.

The Russian was muttering again, “That bastard... What did she see in him?”

Katie looked up, “What, the singer?”

Danyael, his eyes glued to the singer who was walking off the ice, spoke to the group at large, "Alright everyone. It's obvious that their team captain is out for my blood. Though I can't for the life of me figure out why." A sly grin played across his face. "I volunteer for the forward position opposite of him (right wing I suppose it is). As long as I can stay away from him and alive, I might be able to keep his attention off of the game. I've never played hockey before, but I imagine them having one less effective player will make it easier for us to score right?"

“Greetings, pódruha,” the new teammate began,

Pódruha? Cad damnú?

“It would be my pleasure to meet you, were we not in such a load of [email protected]! right now. But it looks like we'll be working together here. Formalities and pleasantries later. My name is Vitali Koralev. In my head, I've already made tags for you all, but I'd rather know your names instead.” He grabbed the goalkeeper’s glove and stick before continuing on,
“If you all don't mind, I used to play goalkeeper when I was growing up. This might be the last chance I get to play my favourite position.” He winked, laughing softly as he slipped his hand into the glove. Vitali quickly removed it and began shaking the glove until a hand rolled out and bounced on the floor.

She stood up and began buttoning her coat, “Kathryn, or Katie if you prefer. And I’ve got at least some knowledge about strategy, but not much ice experience.” She sighed and leaned over to pick up a hockey stick, “I think most of us are about to get a crash course in playing hockey.” She looked around the group, quickly assesing their aparent skills before voicing her opinion, “Right then, here’s how I think we should set up. Let me know if you have a serious problem with it, but I doubt we have much time to discuss this.

“Downhouser, you up front with me and Danyael. I want you to plow the way for us. Take center and do whatever it takes to get the puck! If you can, shoot it into their goal. Percy, Virago, why don’t you guys stay back here and defend Vitali and the goal. Keep the ice clear of those thugs, and if the puck comes flying by you, try and grab it and pass it back up to one of us at the front. And for God’s sake, don’t leave this half of the rink; stay here and protect the goal. Remember, the ultimate objective of hockey is to keep the puck out of our area,” she pointed to their side of the rink, “and into their goal.” Her eyes flicked around at the Wildfire players, “and, in this case, not to be smashed to a pulp.”
