Topic: Voyages of Rocinante - Serenity/Firefly RPG
Subject: Tess ~ Audition.

It didn’t take long for Wolf and the new kid to get the relays reset and the grav boots back inline. Tess took the time to look over Rocinante’s displays, gingerly fingering the throttle and looking at the love that had been given into the control panel. Once Wyatt gave her the word, she swiped her hands under the pilot’s seat before beginning the start-up sequence.

“Sorry ‘bout that, Capt’n,” Tess said, snapping the goggles over her eyes, “shall we this girl dancing to a better beat?”

Rocinante rocked gently as she lifted off the ground, but she didn’t dip suddenly before taking off. Tess skimmed her smoothly over the field before steadily gaining altitude. Her hand pressed the comm button and said, “Alright boys, we’re gonna take her nice and easy. Couple of loop overs, barrels, and an Immelmann or two. Dependin’ on how this girl feels after that, I might’n be going fer a defensive spiral. Nothin’ too taxin’ on those grav dampers.”

Sunflowers ruffled under Rocinante’s wake. Her steady incline gave way as Tess looped the ship over so her belly was facing the sky not once, but twice. Each loop was nice and wide, and Tess was pleased to feel her controls responding smoothly to her touch.

“Shiney.”

What in the sevens hells was in that boy’s brainpan? Ain’t nuttin’ but a kindly caress and she’s boogyin’ just fine.

Rocinante’s nose tipped skywards as she was eased into an Immelmann out of the second loop. She twisted gracefully as Tess righted the ship. The relay patch was still holding steady, and Tess decided to take her into the downwards spiral. The ship creaked slightly as she was taken into a series of three sixty circles while decreasing in altitude. Tess flipped a switch to give the trace compression block a burst of power, and Rocinante straightened out and swept out above the sunflowers. The pilot smiled slightly at the picturesque quality of it all. She was in a sturdy, charming ship on a bright, sunshiny day, with a field of sunflowers to play over.

“Well, Capt’n, I ain’t sure we should go out to the black and go fer hard burn, seein’ as how that ruttin’ t’su lao hu already spent’n wasted quite a bit of this little lady’s fuel. What…”

A light started flashing on the console. Tess’s mouth was still open in an unfinished sentence as she punched up the proximity display. Something was following Rocinante, and it was gaining. A few more screens showed her that it was an ASREV. Here? In a field of gorram flowers?

“What we have here, Capt’n,” she said, activating a few more sensors as Rocinante rocked across the valley, “is an Angel. And she ain’t got no marks, neither. Seems her pulse beacon’s gone a missin’.” Tess automatically started ducking and weaving the ship, gaining altitude progressively as she went. That’s a girl. Tess thought, nearly patting the dash as she looked to see where the ASREV was, keep ‘er up like that, in case we have’ta change the tune.

Klaxon alarms rang inside the bridge. Lights flashed as the screen showed the ASREV in sharp relief with two objects moving away from it. Missiles. Guided missiles.

“I highly suggest ya’ll hold onto sumthing. This might’n be an Angel of Death,” Tess slammed her hand into the shipwide comm, “Hope you boys is ready down in engineerin’. Things might’n be gittin’ a little dicey.”

Subject: Tess ~ Cool as a cucumber, in a whole lotta vinager

Lights lit across the control board as Gator began the start-up sequence. The ship rocked gently as she left the ground. Tess stood quietly behind the captain as the would-be pilot hit the switch for the comm.

“Wolf dude! Let’s get ready to rumble!!!!”

Her stomach dropped a notch as he let Rocinante dip towards the ground before launching her into the sky. Clouds rushed by as he rocked the ship on. Her nose dipped sharply towards the ground and he let out a bellow, “Weeyooo!” Crops fanned out in front of Rocinante’s prow, and Tess winced as he swung her around sharply.

Easy, boy. she thought, feeling the ship creek beneath her feet, ain’t like we got Reavers on our tail.

Gator’s hand stretched out and reached for the switch to kill the starboard engine.

Oh Ancestors Above. Tess grabbed the co-pilot’s chair to brace herself before Rocinante began spinning wildly. Her mind had switched into that calm, placid field, letting all thoughts and emotion wash over her as the ship was thrown into disarray. He re-engaged the engine and shot across the field of crops once more. Tess’s grip tightened as he threw Rocinante into a barrel roll, and then drove her into an accelerated climb.

And there goes the relays. She could feel the grav start to slide as he pushed the ship more and more as they climbed to the black. Images of all hell breaking loose briefly blipped into her mind before she pushed them aside. The ship wasn’t in a bad way. Yet. Pots and pans clattered in the galley as they momentarily lost gravitation throughout the ship.

Glancing down at the display screen told Tess that they had barely left the atmosphere before Gator slammed his hand down into the button to activate full burn. Then it happened. An unearthly sound rocketed through the ship. It was a horse galloping. Tess knew the sounds well. The sound filled her ears and …

She was riding off to gather up a cow that had strayed from the herd. Her daddy had sent her to get it all by herself. All by herself! He reckon’d it was down in the gulch, which meant at least a twenty minute ride all on her own. Her heart swelled with pride at the thought of gettin’ that cow. After all, her twelve birthday was comin’ up, and her daddy had trusted her with a lot of responsibility.

Black clouds swelled above her, promising that her catch wouldn’t be a dry one. Tessa shook a yellow rain slicker out of her saddle bags and threw it over her shoulders. Lightening began streaking across the sky and thunder bellowed. Sweetness, the beloved Morgan she rode, shivered and wickered.

“Easy now, girl,” Tessa said, patting the horse on the flanks. The storm escalated quicker than Tessa had expected. The sky was completely dark, blotting out the sun and giving the gulch a gloomy look. Lightning and thunder continued to inundate the heavens. She shivered herself. Daddy’s counting on me.

The cow was found munching a few patches of grass under a single tree in the gulch. It looked up at them with dull eyes before continuing to graze. A flash lit up the area around them and a loud boom sounded in answer. Sweetness crow hopped and whinnied. Tessa’s hands patted the horse again, more reassuring herself than the horse. She was vaguely aware that stray strands of dry hair had begun to stand up from her head.

As they were about fifty yards away from the cow, lightening struck again. A flash blinded Tessa momentarily as it hit the scrubby tree, and a sound like a gunshot went off in her ears. Sweetness reared and pivoted, letting out a shriek as she galloped out the way they came.

…goose bumps erupted across her skin.

They had found a horse ranch that was in neutral territory. Joe Bronson was sympathetic to the Brown Coats, and had agreed on letting troops stage at his ranch for the ground battles on Ezra. There was the added advantage of having a flanking position against the gathered purple bellied troops that looked to be preparing assault in the next day or two. Tess had been charged with transporting minor troops and supplies to Bronson’s place. He had given a specific location for her to land so the transport wouldn’t spook the horses.

Thirty six hours of transport later, Tess had just finished guiding the craft down for the last run. This is it. I hope it’ll give em’ hell, at least for a little while.

She rested against the hull of the ship as she watched the last of the troops unload the mules with crates of ammunition. Hers was the last, and then they would blast those purple bellies to the ever lovin’ hells they believed in. Calls of orders broke her out of her moment of rest. She strode out into the middle of the clearing to observe the last of the supplies get loaded up. A smile broke across her face as she heard the words, “Gorram it, private! If I have t’ jump this Yi Dwei Da Buen Chuo Roh crate one more time, I’ll be sending your Feh Feh Pi Goh across those lines first!”

A sound rent the sky. A sound that rumbled at first, and then slowly grew in pitch. She knew what it was. Flyin’ Angels. But she was the last of the fleet to be landing today. Those angels weren’t there for their salvation.

A spy.

“Get in the gorram ship!” she screamed. Men stopped in stride, hands poised above straps for the cargo, cigarettes halfway to mouths.

“GET TO THE SHIP!” She ran full out towards the transport. Lights erupted in the direction of Bronson’s ranch. The Alliance were bombing his ranch, along with the dozen platoons of ground troops, supplies, and land vehicles. A terrible sound drifted towards her from the farm’s direction. It grew steadily louder as Tess approached the cargo doors, and she had just swung herself inside before she could hear nothing else. Her hand swayed towards the button to shut the doors, but men were still scrambling to get inside.

The sound was screaming.

Hundreds of horses were galloping away from the ranch in terror. Their shrieks filled Tess’s ears as she watched them thunder past. One hit the side of the transport and split its side open. Hot blood sprayed into the cargo doors, but it kept galloping past as if all hell itself was close on its tail.

It was a gallop of terror.

Gator pulled out of the hard burn. The sounds of the galloping horse faded away. The hair on Tess’s arms stood straight on end, and she stared at the lanky yuppy that sat in the pilot’s chair. Wyatt leaned over, picked his hat up off the ground, and moved towards Gator. His face was inscrutable. Blood pounded in Tess’s ears

He leaned down towards Gator and said, “Get the hell outta my pilot’s chair.”

Tess didn’t even have time to think. As soon as Gator stood up, she took one step towards that lanky chwen joo, pulled back her fist and laid it square into the man’s jaw.

Eol's got it right ~ you guys can play what you'd like. Just make sure to read over the first two posts here in the Q&A.

As Henry, the Lute's owner says, “This is my establishment, I will have no fighting, no stealing, and no destruction of property!”

All I ask is that my Inn doesn't get completely raized to the ground.

I will see what I can do about inserting some roving characters ~ or maybe I'll actually post something for Waldorf and Statler. Heh. Hehe. Hehehehe.

Beverage of the Day: Old Tom’s Ale

It is early summer. This year was an unusually wet spring, and since the sun has been out the early crops have been flourishing. Strawberries should be on soon. Today was bright and sunny, and this evening is proving to be pleasantly cool with no clouds and a waxing moon.

The stage stands unoccupied.

Four tables have patrons seated around it.
The table in the back is occupied by an elderly half-elven druid wearing winestained clothing who has dark hair and an unusual face, and a depressed looking dwarf wearing dark blue clothing who has brown hair and a hard face. They are laughing quietly.

The table by the stage has a very tall halfling minstrel wearing dark clothing seated at it. She has red hair and a furtive face. She is counting coins.

A table in the middle of the room has five patrons seated at it: a tall female half-orc clerk wearing stained clothing with dark hair and a wrinkled face, an elderly human male wearing drab robes with pure white hair and a worried face, a male half-orc hawker wearing adventurers garb with dark brown hair and an apprehensive look, a youthful female human merchant wearing muddy clothing with brown hair and a deeply shadowed face, and a small male gnome scholar wearing non-descript clothing with matted hair and a hard face. They are all watching the door.

The last table has a heavily bandaged human wearing bloodstained clothing. She has obviously dyed black hair and a sweating face. She is waiting quietly.

Two old men sit at the end of bar. If you are a frequent patron, you recognize these two codgers as Waldorf and Statler. They often discuss current events, rumors, flirt with the bartender, trade jokes, and laugh unabashidly all in loud, disagreeable tones that leaves you wondering when they will tell you to get off their lawn, you damn kid!

I’ve got the Bleeding Lute back up and running. I’ve advanced it a few months so we can start fresh, and I will keep a better eye on the ‘ol girl from here on out. I think I may give a warning or two here and there before I advance the timeline, but it’ll only be a day at a time. This will also depend on what’s happening in the Lute at the time as well ~ I may just hold off on it for a while.

Please see The Bleeding Lute Q&A for rules.

Have fun!

Double yes.

How about we just forget about meeting in a specific place, and schedule a cruise? We'll just stop mulitple times to pick up Innmates from around the world, circle the globe a couple times, and then drop everyone off! Sightseeing, swimming in the ocean, copious amounts of good food, a little pillaging here and there...

Alright, I know I haven't said it yet, but you guys are awesome! I've read some of Rocinante in the past, and the characters are amazing! Can't wait to have Tess get to know each of you, plus the two new guys (Eol and Loki ~ for great intros)!

Thanks for a little more resolution with Destiny Al ~ short lived, but still a great story!

Question in regards to the update ~ it seems to me that, given the right touch, doing some of the things that Gator did wouldn't tax Rocinante too badly. Offset the right valves and all that goodness; not saying that's she's a gunship, but can she handle at least a little bit of fancy footwork?

Again, I'm not trying to imply that Gator has the right touch for such antics (apparently!), I'm just looking for a general idea as to what (as a pilot) I can do with her.

Clack.
Clack.
Clack.

“Kong.”

“Wong ba duhn!”

Yellow teeth were revealed from behind lips that pulled tightly into a grin, “Watch you ‘ranguage, Tess.”

“How can I when ya’ll about to Mah-Jong on me?”

“Oh, don’t be upset. You never know, fortune may smile today.”

It didn’t. Four more moves and Tess Zhou had been soundly beaten by Uncle Benny, owner of Uncle Benny’s Secondhand and Pawn. It had been six months since Tess had more or less crash landed on Beaumounde, four of those six had been spent sleeping on a cot in the back of the store and helping Uncle Benny run the joint. Every over night found Tess and Benny sitting around a rickety card table, drinking jasmine and playing Mah-Jong.

The old chinaman was just about a shady as Tess had known, but deep down he was a good man. Times were tough, and she could hardly blame him for wheeling and dealing to his advantage. In addition, there was the back room that helped to keep his business afloat. She hadn’t learned about that until last month, which was lucky since some of the seedier patrons that went back there were starting to make her a might twitchy.

They both clinked their cups together and drained the last of their tea. Benny stood up.

“See you in morning.”

“G’night, Uncle Benny.” The little bell tinkled at the back door and there was a satisfying sound as he locked the deadbolt. Tess looked over the jumble of tiles, not really seeing them as she lost her thoughts in the silence of the little junk shop.

Dear Ancestors above, did she miss flying.

A few weeks ago, she had received a wave from Grace, mechanic from her last ship Destiny. Surprised wasn’t even the beginning as to how the pilot felt; the last time she had heard from the mechanic was as she, Jon, and Stephanie were running towards the shuttle through the middle of a firefight, and Grace radioed over their comms that she was staying behind to blow the engine. Turns out that gao guhn ji kong survived the whole gorram thing. Tess had no idea how the devil Gracie actually found her, but that girl was crazy brilliant when it came to that sort of thing.

Truth of it was, Gracie had told her, Destiny was still dead in the water, but she was sure she could get her up and flying eventually. After hearing that Tess had been grounded for the better part of six months, her face fell in regret.

“You belong in the air.”

“I know, Xiao Ya,” Tess had responded. The wave didn’t last much longer, Gracie went off about security and time spent chatting before finally ending the transmission. The problem was that Tess had been looking for another pilot’s chair. There were just too many damned pilots in the ‘verse and not enough ships to go around.

Tess gathered up the little chipped tea set, washing it clean before finally turning in for the night. She woke up in the wee hours of the morning, opening the shop long before any of the other stores opened. Benny had delighted in having her stay there and opening early, earnestly declaring, “More customers. Open ear'ry mean we have head start on day.”

When Benny came in later that morning, he practically ran to the counter where she stood, his yellow teeth flashing in another one of his signature smiles. Tess wondered what kind of hair brained deal he had made this time. The last one involved some sort of knockoffs of high fashioned jumpsuits that she wouldn’t be caught dead in.

“Ran into man on street. He say ship come in and look for pi’rot! And I know how good you arrrrrrrrre!” he said, poking her on the arm several times.

Her heart skipped a beat. This was not at all what she was expecting, “A ship? Which one?”

“Rocinante,” he replied, “and you be there tomorrow morning. Eis’rey Moss port.

“And no worry about Unc’rae Benny,” he continued as she frowned slightly, “I not too o’rd to manage store. Though business may suffer with no pretty woman around, eh?”

“Your speakin’ like I already got that there job, Ben. I ain’t even sure what type of ship she is.”

“Firef’ry. I know you. If you arms were wings, you be f’rying now. I sure he take you, no doubt about it. I got good fee’ring.”

The following day was spent gathering up her meager belongings, and going through some preflight procedures. After their evening Mah-Jong game, Uncle Benny told her that she had better take that tea set with her; it wouldn’t do any good for her to be out in the black with nothing to drink but swei.

Morning found Tess standing around with a growing crowd of potential pilots at Eisley Moss Space Port. She stood quietly, admiring the Firefly that sat before her. Her lines weren’t quite a beautiful as Destiny’s, but she was still a good looking ship in Tess’s eyes. A line formed, and candidates started getting turned away. After listing off her prior experience, she was directed towards a smaller group that would run through the sim.

For Tess, the sim felt like a cakewalk. Even though it wasn’t real, she still quickly went through her preflight rituals; rubbing the bottom of the chair twice, twirling her necklace clockwise once, and finally snapping her goggles down across her eyes. The whole thing was like an elaborate tease; the promise of flight, the somewhat accurate response of the simulation to her touch, the delayed reactions in the equipment. Almost the real thing. Almost. Her hand lingered on the back of the chair before the next candidate took a seat.

Tess had already decided that she liked the Captain, Wyatt Sung. He seemed to have a no nonsense way of running his boat. It actually stung a little how much it reminded her of Jon, but in the end, in her opinion, that was the only way to be if you were running the show.

She looked placidly across the table towards Wyatt, waiting for him to speak. For her, the silence wasn’t uncomfortable. Rocinante had a very relaxed feel about her, always a good sign. There were parts of Destiny that had given Tess the willies, but she was still home for a time. The “Dude” seemed to fidget a little before the captain spoke.

“So,” he said, dragging out the last syllable, “Any questions?”

“Yeah,” Tess started, “does Rocinante have any little quirks? Like maybe the drive axis is a bit tweaked on a hard burn, or summit like a quick left faint’ll pinch a line in the grav boot and we got crew floating all over the cargo bay?”

“More to the point, when do I get to feel this girl move beneath me?” she finished smiling.

I'm back in town. Nothing quite like extended hospital visists. Again, I apologize for my delay.

I've been reading through the posts (which are awesome by the way!) but I am confused about one thing ~ where the devil is Tess in all of this? At the end of Brom's post, he said he was sitting at the table with Gator and Trish?

The intro to Tess is all written up, but I haven't touched her audition because I thought I needed to wait for Gator's audition since he was up first. Er, well, wait for the real audition anyway. The sim doesn't count. Any little line of direction as to where she actually -is- (is it actually her and not Trish at the table, is she still in the lingering in the cockpit?) by the time I end this little jaunt would be greatly appreciated!
