Subject: A real meeting.

**The following is posted in close collaboration with Bromern Sal. Much of it is his words.**

Reverend kept his eyes on Preacher as the solo slowly obeyed his employer's command, slipping the weapon back into his jacket and dropping back into his seat. The lieutenant noticed that Preacher made no comment in reference to Spiff's declaration about not wanting a bodyguard, and as he walked around the table to seat himself opposite Preacher, he did nothing but stare daggers at the man.

"Where is everyone, Rev?"

"Too early in the day for most of them, Boss." Reverend continued to stare across the table at the cowboy, who peered back at the large, bald man with little by way of expression on his pallid face. "Why was the meeting sh*t? Seems to me as you got a plan of sorts working."

Spiff started by noting his man's physical attitude. "First off, calm down. Preacher here should be just your kind of guy. Who else but another religious man should be a part of our organization? He's not just a hot gun either. Word around the street is that he knows his way around the net." He set his phone on the table.

"Rev, it was a sh*t meeting because the plan isn't definitive. We don't have a backup if things go wrong. And Croaker's still got this concept of flapping his wang out there being more important than getting anything done." He put his feet on the floor and pulled up his chair.

"Here's what I want from you Preacher." Spiff spoke for a while, going over the details of an arrangement where Preacher would be his information regarding the net and the web. The discussion of money was brief. Preacher was not a man of many words, so once the figure was reasonable he accepted it. Spiff agreed to pay him 400 eb per month to be his eyes and ears on the net. He wouldn't necessarily have to go on, but instead know what those on it could know. He needed a man who could help him cover his tracks, and Preacher was just the man for the job.

"Now if it ever comes down to you seeing an absolute need to go on the net, you can count on me to help with the cost of equipment and cover your ass while you're under. Let's pray that never happens. And another thing. You're a decent solo too. If you get yourself back up and running like you did before, I'll probably be paying you for that type of work."

He had let Rev see the negotiations because he knew his man. He would need him to be fully capable of taking over while Spiff was out on runs. Moreover, as he turned back to the man, he needed a second opinion. "What do you think Rev? Anything else you can think of to note?"

Reverend shook his head, "It is your show, Boss."

"What's the term of this contract?" Preacher asked with a slow drawl. "Should I decide to take it."

Spiff chuckled. It was just like a solo to be itchy about every opportunity that was placed in front of them. "Terms are a complex thing, Preacher." He picked up his phone and started scrolling through the contracts in a manner so Preacher could see them. "Most of the people there tend to give me info when I call just 'cause they like me. I've never done anything cruel to you Preacher, and I'm offering you cash to do almost exactly the same thing. The only difference is, you've got the opportunity to hang around me for the next few days to avoid this stupid megacorp. Safety in numbers, ya know?" Spiff was pulling it out of his ass because he had too much on his mind. He was trying to figure out how his people could help and he was struggling at finding a reason not to hire Preacher to put a few bullets into Croaker.

"Look, the sum of it is we don't have anyone on the net. None of us. What I need is someone who knows the net so we can avoid a paper trail. When it comes down to it, the only time I'll likely need that for is until this Megacorp comes down, or until I'm a splatter on the street. Still, I like you Preacher, and I'd like you to be a part of my organization. I think you'll like what we do and how we do it. Reverend here is as slick as his pricey suit makes him look. The ones you don't know stay off the radar and still bring in enough to cover the cost of things like this very expensive suit. I think that you could be a good asset to us. You certainly have some marketable skills, but for the next little while when I'm getting to know you, let's keep it to a friendly deal. A few hundred a month to show me how much you really know. When you think it's time to high-tail it, or you think you've proven yourself useful, talk to me. I'll be happy to renegotiate."

"Well, I don't know how much service I can provide where the Net's concerned, Spiff. But if you're willin' to pay me four hundred Eb a month to occasionally scan the Internet, I'll be happy to hit a DataTerm now an again. 'Sides which, if'n I don't have t' keep you alive, it makes it all the more peachy a deal for me, now don't it."

"This guy for real, Boss?" Reverend thumbed his hand at Preacher and raised his eyebrows, causing his forehead to wrinkle something fierce. "You really payin' him four hundred to sit on his ass and play braindance?" The lieutenant shook his bald head and whistled through his teeth. "Your money, son.

"So, what's the plan now?"

"You learn how to do it and I'll pay you to do it, Rev. For now, Preacher is going to keep us alive. Did you pick up everything we're doing Rev? What do you need me to fill you in on?" After a brief clarification of the events so far, Spiff turned back to the cowboy.

"Alright, first thing's first. Am I going to need a new phone?" Spiff was aware of how these things worked. He had posted on a forum recently about the events, and he knew that things like that could be tracked. The question was posed to their man on the inside to see how much of a concern it was. After all, he had been the one to post it.

Preacher remained silent for a moment before nodding. "Wouldn't hurt, though there's a chance they've already traced it back to you, and are negotiating with an info corp to get your ten forty."

"What?" Reverend's deep voice drew the other's attention as he leaned forward and heatedly demanded, "The organization's been compromised? What the hell, Spiff? When were you going to tell me about this?"

Spiff took a deep breath. "I just found out myself Rev. Now perhaps you see why I wanted the rest of the crew here. I would expect excuses from Choirgirl or Sticks. I called you in on this one because you produce results. To say the least, I'm not impressed. Now, you can keep getting hot-headed or you can shut the f*** up so I can find out what changes need to be made."

Reverend shut up.

Spiff turned back to Preacher to finish the conversation. "That's not what I mean. If they know it's me, I'm glad to know it, but can they track me based on my phone? If I get a new phone, do I have to get a new number to keep them from tracking me? Would just getting a new number do fine with my current phone? What about Rev and most of my organization? Since they're in my contacts do I need to change out their phones? What kind of cost am I looking at? I need you to give me the minute details here, even if most of it's over my head. This is the kind of back-and-forth I need from you."

"Your contacts and such are stored on the phone, so you needn't worry about that. Your billing info...well, that's another matter altogether. As far as tracking you by your cell...they could triangulate your position based on cell towers and how good a relationship they got with your service provider, or how good a netrunner they got on staff. But unless you use some dope name to bill, it don't matter if you buy a new phone an' number or not. They likely got you pegged same as they got those who've ever been on camera with Croaker I'd assume." Preacher shrugged. "My advice? Never stay in one place for too long, and at least put your staff on high alert."

Spiff sat up straight and put his phone away. "If that's the case, then we should get moving." He waved over the waitress. "Two things sweetheart. I need to get the check, and I need to speak to Kara. Is she in?"

The waitress nodded, chewing rather wildly on a piece of gum as she eyeballed Spiff and his two companions from beneath heavily painted eyelids. "I got your check, sugar, but Kara ain't working right now. She handles the night crew if you know what I mean. You ought t' come back and see her. Cutest little body you ever seen, but then you likely already knew that or you wouldn't be askin' for her now would you."

That said, the woman held a plastic plaque out towards the fixer. "Credchip, or cash?" Spiff paused. He didn't want this location revealed if at all possible. He turned to Preacher and payed in the way the cowboy recommended.

"If I call Scribe's bodyguard right now, you're telling me they won't start targeting him?"

"Well, if I was you I'd use a pay-per-use phone you can pick up from a Vend-O-Mart so long as we're in this mess."

"Vend-O-Mart sounds fine to me. Let's pick up one of those on our way out. We've got work to do this evening." Spiff, stacked up his plates and finished off his drink and moved it out of the way. Then he looked to his lieutenant. "That business is done. Let's hear your piece Rev."

That stinks. I missed the disappearance in my rush. In any case, her actions will be the same. She's going to try to shoot it. Technically now we're dealing with a percentage mis-chance, but that would eliminate the negatives for firing through water, thus making it -12 called shot, so +8 + her regular bonus, and then the percentage mis-chance. This means I'll likely not hit, but it's her best option this round. And if it surfaces next round, I have more actions.

Subject: Plates and halflings and wizards, oh my...

Jon was the first to act, moving quickly and rushing over to the ropes tossed over from the other boat. He shoved through the crowd and moved along the front edge of the boat. His goal was to avoid the pirates, but as soon as they had made their way across the ropes, they were bombarded by the passengers on the ship. It's not applicable to imply that they weren't acting though. They were slaughtering the unarmed passengers as fast as one could imagine a net behind this boat would collect fish.

Still, he was within striking range of the pirate when he cut the first rope. The cut was clean, easy, and swift. But it brought him more danger than he had bargained for. The pirate struck at him. Unfortunately, he was distracted by the fight at hand, and over-estimated the length of his shortsword. The strike missed Jon by a mile. What ensued as the blade struck the rope was a lot to notice. The rope fell from the boat much faster than gravity would draw it. It was clear to Jon why. There was another pirate on it, and he fell into the ocean below as the rope was cut.

Ja'ara was the next to act. He was ready to attack, but aiming over the heads of everyone was a difficult task. He moved toward the front of the boat, and positioned himself at the end of the boat, opposite the attack. There was little chance they could reach him through the crowd. This, unfortunately, made the throw difficult for him. Still, with all of his years of training, even such a strange weapon was easy to throw. The plate left his hands smoothly and flew at the pirate who had just swung at Jon. The attack was decent and the plate hit the pirate, hard. It shattered as it struck him in the arm, and the flakes cut his face and arm. Still, he seemed to stand steady, ready to continue slicing away the crowd in front of him.

That was what he did. He waved his blade through the crowd of unarmed crewmen. They attempted to dodge, but the other crew behind them stopped them from avoiding the blade as it cut through them, dropping them as quickly as fish turn belly up in a barrel of boiling water...assuming you could boil water in a barrel without setting it on fire...but that's enough oceanic references for the moment. There were *THWANG*s of crossbows being fired from the other ship, including the very loud *THWANG*s of ballista.

The dwarf decided to cast a spell, aiming to eliminate the pirates attacking. He selected one who's rope had not already been cut. It was a rational move. There were good reasons to target another person. For one, there were plenty of others to attack the man who already had plate shards sticking from his arm. Additionally, with a bit of luck, he could strike fear in those back on the enemy ship if he proved that there was a caster here, and he was capable of doing some damage. The magical blade appeared in the air before him and flew at the pirate. The enemy was struck in the chest and forced to back-step at the blow.

"Hehe. Look everyone! That dwarf thinks he's a wizard!" It was Finder's voice that echoed over the crowd. What was truly disturbing was that it really did echo. The word wizard struck both ships silent. A few of those fighting even stopped to glance back at who had made the comment. Fortunately for Finder, he had already hidden in the crowd. This was very unfortunate for the dwarf, who now had all the attention to himself, his hands still posed and pointing at the pirate who had just had a glowing thing strike him. So much for covering up his status as a caster...

Finder had a great opportunity here. He could throw his plate at the pirate who'd already been hit by one. It would be easy to cover up, and easy to do with everyone distracted by a bigger threat. His years of practice easily overcame throwing such a strange object and he struck the pirate easily. Unfortunately, even though the plate shattered on impact, he realized the human must have been significantly stronger than he. The shards didn't lodge into the man as the others had. It was very fortunate he was trained in finding weak spots. it was only a slight cut, but it was a slight cut to the man's throat. The pirate fell to the ground as the plate cut across his trachea.

The sunlight glimmered off the masts as the battle continued on the boat. Still, more pirates were now aboard, and a rope was now tied to the mast of the other ship to be thrown across. But with the calls of wizard, a dead pirate in the ranks, and the cutting of ropes. It was anyone's guess what might happen next.

((That's round one, get those actions in))

Percifeer was glad she had readied her actions. As the fish prepared to grapple Pio, she got the jump on it and cast her spell. "Let my arrow fly true to save my brother in his time of need." ((this is per book on readied actions, I get to act before his initiative, which moves my initiative to just before his in the following round, meaning my spell is cast, he grapples Pio and gets into the water, then I get to act before he gets another action)) Her next action was obvious. She rushed over to the water's edge, pointing her crossbow over the rail.

She had prepared herself as best as possible, but it was going to be a tough shot. She was firing into the water, and aiming for a very particular spot on this fish. Still, she had to attempt to save her brother. She aimed carefully at the beast's eye and fired. The shot would have to enter the water, strike the eye, and cut deep enough to enter the brain to be a kill. Still, there wasn't a better shot to take at this point. She could only hope for a bit of luck. A loud *THWANG* echoed through the streets as her crossbow loosed the arrow at the beast.

Percifeer noticed the beast slashing dangerously at her friends, and couldn't help herself. She drew her crossbow and loaded it. Surely, under normal circumstances this beast wouldn't have attacked them. They had attacked first. Still, it was hard to sit back and watch her allies get battered.

She decided not to intervene just yet. No one was seriously hurt, and with any luck it would just run back to its home where less dangerous meals awaited. However, should it choose to do more than claw, like try to grapple or eat one of her allies, she would have to intervene. For now, though, there was no danger of that.

((if called to act per above, her readied action is to cast true strike, the next round will be called shot eye, which should be a kill also))

Doing the dishes was made slightly less menial as the foursome broke out in song. After a bit, they noticed the crew above had started singing also. The notes were out of tune and the words were often very raunchy. Still, it was a clear break from the monotony of sea life. A welcome break for which they could thank the halfling, and the halfling alone.

It was amidst the song that something strange happened. It was the halfling who heard it, but no one else noticed the subtle change at first. The melody above had changed, broken rather. In fact, there was no singing above deck. When the halfling paused at the new sound, the others stopped singing also only to find that the singing above deck had turned to screams. There was havoc above deck, and a quick glance at the stairs back up noted several of the crew running down either to hide or grab a weapon or both.

There was a number of asleep crewmen downstairs that were waking up groggily (gruggily?) to the sounds, and they looked no worse off than those running down now. The ragged clothes of these men running down the stairs reminded the four washing dishes of the local drunkard. Still, there was something else on those dingy clothes. They were soiled, not with days of sweat and weeks of not changing one's undershorts, but with something a bit harder to clean, blood. Moreover, the look in their eyes was quite different from the usual bored demeanor. The look was terror. Their eyes were wide, their mouths half-open. The boards under them seemed to creak in echo of the screams above.

The group rushed above deck ((I assume)) to see what was happening. The crew had crowded to one side of the boat, and it wasn't hard to see why. There was another boat across the broadside, and a number of new inhabitants on board, wielding longswords and slicing through crewmen as though they weren't even there. It was clear to see how they had gained passage to this boat. There were a few grappling hooks attached to ropes that had been tossed across.

Still, it was an unusual manner for "Pirates!" as the word was screamed on board, to attack such a boat. The boat broadsiding them was not going the same direction, but the opposite direction. This would imply to any witty seaman, and even some half-wits that the ropes would cause quite an issue as both boats kept traveling on the water. Still, they had succeeded in one thing. There were "Pirates!" aboard, and they were doing a decent job of slaughtering the crew. It was a gory, dismal sight that would haunt any person for many days to come.

Grugg, still waiting for you to post this round. Normally when a pc doesn't post, I'll just NPC him until he gets around to it. Unfortunately, as I said, this is going to be a very difficult adventure. This is the last chance you three will have before a possible deadly situation to get to know each other. As the heroes of this adventure you'll need to band together. I know how hard it's going to be, which is why I'm giving so much time to get to know each other's characters.

Spiff had hoped to grab a person or two as the meeting ended, but the crew immediately split into their silly cliques. He would have to be content with the phone numbers for now. He was still relaxing in his seat with his feet up when Preacher nearly leaped from the seat next to him. He almost laughed at the banter between them. He knew, however, that his lieutenant was already on edge and he didn't need a reason to set him off further.

"Put down the d*** gun Preacher. I never even wanted a bodyguard." He didn't look up at either of the men next to him. He relaxed in his laid back position until they calmed down. "Sit down boys, that was a crappy introduction." He picked up his drink and took a sip, dropping his feet to the floor. Everyone had left, so he could speak freely now. "And for the record, that was a s*** meeting."

He looked around at the table. It wasn't exactly needed. He already knew the rest of the crew was absent. Instead, he was just drawing Reverend's attention to the fact that he had noticed. "Where is everyone, Rev?"

Percifeer crossed her arms angrily at Pio when he motioned for her arm. She followed the group slowly, scraping her feet on the ground and muttering to herself. She mentioned, while they were walking "It's not like we'll find out anything worthwhile!" just in time for a fisherman to run and a large monstrosity to land on the ground in front of them.

She was almost shocked enough to laugh. It was as though the gods themselves were announcing to her siblings that she was right. Pio turned to her and said "Aim high" and she simply grimaced as she stepped back a little. Then she leaned up against a wall and waited for the battle to be over or for it to become bad enough that she felt a need to jump in.

Subject: I've been working on the.....

Doldrum was not a word used in this world. The doldrums, or equator waters where no wind exists on Earth, were not a part of the world known to this group. In fact, the two hemispheres were divided by a vicious spiral of wind. the multidirectional winds met at the equator and caused massive wind storms that largely halted sea travel from the northern to southern hemisphere. Most land had even been eroded to a point deep underwater here, leaving large gaps in continents.

Still, doldrum was the only real word to describe the journey these passengers were enduring. Three weeks of purgatory. It had been days since anyone had seen land, and weeks since they had been at a port. The open ocean and hot sun were agonizing and recurring. It was almost welcoming to see the storm clouds.

Wait, storm clouds? On the horizon. How did a storm act at sea? After all, weren't they basically sitting in a bathtub. The crew had begun to shift uneasily between tasks. Only the captain had any confidence that the ship would survive a storm, and it hadn't occurred to him to tell the crew that it was of no concern. What could he do? It defied their land logic to imply that if you filled a bowl with water it would still float. He'd have to let them see it for themselves.

Still, shift change was upon them. The crow's nest had been conversing idly while looking out to sea for any sort of danger, mostly watching the storm clouds approach, when for a brief moment they glanced down and noticed the other crew approaching from below. It was a young boy and a well-built man. They boy had something in his mouth as he climbed and the man had nothing. It was soon very clear that the other two would have to leave the crow's nest. It was only really built for one person after all, and there were two in it at this point. Four was way too many.

((assuming the obvious)) As the other two squeezed into the crow's nest behind them, the boy took the thing out of his mouth, which was now clear as a deck of cards, sat down in the small cylinder and invited his companion to play. ((up to you if you say anything or not))

Cooking on this boat was a never-ending task. By the time one day's meal was complete, they had to start on the next day's meal. The halfling and dwarf were relieved from duty by an overweight man and a heavy-set boy who may have been his son. They had only just managed to start pouring out the bowls for the evening meal when the two others took over. It was becoming clear that the two fatties would get to take credit for the hard work they'd done in preparing it by simply handing out the bowls.

The two from the crow's nest and the two from cooking were all assigned to the same task. It was one of the few tasks done below deck. Logically one wouldn't do this below deck but movement constraints above deck and the obvious leaks in the ship required it to be done here. They were washing dishes.

There were mounds of dishes on board this ship, most of them dirty, and the clean ones rarely separated. It was a tough task cleaning dishes because many of those aboard were unhappy with any amount of cleaning, and a rare few were happy with no cleaning. Still, the algae growing on the wooden bowls never went away, no matter how much cleaning went in. The only goal was to scrub enough that maybe the few sick with this disease and that wouldn't pass it on to the others, though they might catch something else from the substandard cleaning methods or the awful excuse for food.

It was dreary work, but at least here, there was little concern for perfection. They had plenty of time to talk and joke around in the water barrels.
