Fortunately for him, the Nurse had already turned to Preacher, but Spiff's eyes widened rather dramatically at the numbers in the bill. The thought of a hospital visit gave him the impression of thousands of credits. He honestly expected it to be like the last time he had ended up under a surgeon's hand, when the Wild Things had nearly beaten them to death. He had been glad to put a big dent in their operations tonight. He considered it repaying the favor. In any case, a 450eb bill was a joke. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his wallet, thumbing through the cash.

Without looking up, he spoke "I gotcha covered Preacher, save that money for the strip clubs." He pulled out 450eb and waved it at the nurse. ((I assume it's like today, payments are given at the reception desk, not to the nurses))

His mind had been mostly distracted during the time at the office with the thoughts of a long, sensual morning with the attractive nurse. Still, it was getting closer and closer to noon, and he wanted to catch a few winks before the early meeting. His mind clicked. He would allow fate to make the decision as to whether he got laid tonight. He would only make an effort to accompany her to breakfast if he ran into her on the way out. If she was off doing some menial task, well then, that's just how things go. After all, both the opportunity to get laid, and the need for sleep were on equal footing in Spiff's book at this point.

((I gave you some leeway here. TBH, I, personally, am not very charismatic and you did a heck of a job with the wording of things))

The group prepared this time, which was a first. As a group they readied themselves to enter the next room, whatever it may contain. The gnome examined the door carefully, finding no traps, though he wasn't surprised. The lack of a handle gave away the concept that there was no lock. He slid it aside, and didn't have much difficulty with the big stone door despite his small stature. When the door slid aside, the group was looking down more stonework. It was a stairwell, going down approximately thirty feet.

The roof was low, but not so low as to require the taller members of the group to duck. Instead, it simply blocked any view of what was below. The only visible information was that the stairwell emptied into a room below, and that room was dark. No light emanated from anything other than the torch. The stairwell was steep, meaning that view of the upcoming room would not be available until they were at the bottom step or two of the stairs.

Siegfried's scent glands were overwhelmed with an awful smell, and he nearly fell over, had Riaharan not caught his arm. The entire party heard a rather disturbing sound. The sound was a mixture of crunching, tearing, cracking, and breaking. It reminded Tram of the sounds he had heard when he ran from the white dragon not so long ago, though these sounds were only a room away. The sound was awful, and the smell wasn't too pleasant either.

Black serpent was not the choir, but the belt as it was ripped from the boy's shorts. The decision to be nude (or nearly nude) was the first that any of the boys made on their own. The second was to elect a leader. Though I could see the choice to assume it as a religions piece (considering some teachers) I would argue very adamantly that, though it references religion, it is very much NOT a religious piece. In fact, it is not read in many schools because there is so much religious backlash about the actual occurrences in the book. It is more of a discussion of law and order and the twisted turns it can take.

On a side note, Stephen King LOVES this book. He wrote an entire book about it (Hearts in Atlantis). He calls it "the book that changed his life". So if that doesn't tell you anything about the type of literature you'll find inside, be prepared. The writing quality is FAR above average. In fact, so much so it may be difficult to read for anyone who doesn't do so a lot.

Anywho, all this comes to my recommendation. TAKE YOUR TIME WITH THIS BOOK! If you aren't putting it down purely to absorb the last two pages that are so incredibly in depth (every two pages are that way), you'll be putting it down because the previous two pages are so monstrously disturbing (such as the Great Fire which is only mentioned once in the book but kept me awake the evening I read about it). You do not want to scarf this down it a night or two. Take your time, and you will find this book more than worth the effort.

**The following is posted in close collaboration with Stryke. Much of it is his words.**

As soon as Percifeer had spoken, Pio leapt to his feet. “Easy, Percy! We may not like Kastor’s idea, but he is our brother. Your brother.”

Kastor sat back down, why does this always happen to him all his ideas are crushed by people with a higher authority. "Look, I know it is the most important thing about the orphanage aprt from ormander himself but it would buy us time to rectify OUR fathers name." kastor put on his cold face betraying no emotion but deep down he was hurt and a little annoyed with this women who dares to rise above himself.

Pio still stood between her and the dwarf. Had he not always been her authority here in the orphanage, she might have pushed past him to continue to blast him. Instead, as he continued to speak, she sheathed her wand (against the skin under the wasteband of her trousers), her face still red. "I don't care about your excuses! Statements like that are going to hurt everything we do to help. If you can keep your mouth shut, I can ignore this faux pas. Otherwise, we can fight and die in this room."

Kastor mumbled "fine the get ormander killed" just so pio could hear it. He knew this might effect her also said to her "you are the one who would die in this room, but i shall let you lot figure out some ideas while you order me to do the doing not the thinking."

She paused, her brow furrowed and her eyelids were nearly closed as she peered at the face behind the beard. She surely was not the first to be confused by a dwarf's speech patterns, and she probably would not be the last, but after a few blinks of her eyes it was clear she was no longer interested in attacking the short thing. Her lips curled into a smile and her eyes narrowed on Kastor. "Good, little man. I think if you can keep your mouth shut the rest of us may well be able to get things done." Her mind might normally have taken her to a much worse place of spells flying about the room, but for some reason, she shrugged it off. It may have been nostalgia, or simply a ressurection of Pio's authority from so long ago. In either case, she sat back down (though on the arm of the chair furthest from Kastor this time) and allowed the rest the opportunity to speak.

And speak he did...“Kastor has put forth an idea… maybe not the best idea, but an idea none-the-less. And, if nothing else, the khord is at least thinking like the Councilor and speaking his language. Councilor Velch is only counting gold and cares nothing for what we hold dear. In six days, he will easily take the silver crest and so much more… and violence against one another will not solve this problem. If we do not think Kastor’s idea is a good one, let us come together as one, and think of some others.” After a brief pause he continued on to the important part of the discussion. "And I would suggest we do this somewhere else. I am sure, Father, you have business to attend to here. Perhaps, there is a meeting room we can use here to discuss our plans further?”

Ormander had a quick reply, “Yes, I will ask the orphans to clear the temple upstairs. I can’t think of a place of better inspiration.”

As soon as Percifeer heard the words, she smiled and stood, grabbing her pack and readying herself to leave.

"You should probably have that looked at,” Scribe said in a nonchalant tone as they made there way in Guardian’s shadow. The media made no attempt to look down at the fixer’s leg, but it was obvious what he was referring to. “I know of someone if you’ve got the cash to keep it on the low, otherwise I suggest we make a detour to the CMC (City Medical Center). You’re call, Gato.”

"I think Preacher here wants to stick with the professionals. Let's go with CMC."

As the group piled into the cab, it seemed that Scribe still had something to say, "Here’s the problem as I see it. I’m going to need a story to back up my claim. I can lead into it, and I believe I can get them to believe I’ve got something juicy, but if I don’t produce in the end I don’t make the grade.” It was obvious that the media was speaking loosely for the benefit of the cabbie. “I’ll place a call. I’m fairly certain that it’ll be my In. But to be frank, our boys in the other dorm are gonna be hard pressed to come up with anything solid without your help. Any ideas on how you’re going to support that vein?”

Spiff thought for a moment, glancing at the cabbie as he turned the wheel. "On the topic of your story. With our employer no longer in charge, I can hardly say that's a huge concern. On the other hand, keeping the info off the airwaves as long as possible could keep us and" and Spiff paused, long enough to lower his glasses and look Scribe in the face, "you off the radar." Spiff readjusted his glasses. "Now, I gotta be honest with you. I have no idea what you meant with the second part of that speech. If you're talking about finding a target, then I'm going to be putting every bit of energy I can into that from here on out. If you're still talking about the airwaves, then I'm afraid to say I don't speak that jargon well enough to get your angle."

Subject: Ok, here's my 2 cents

My first character was here at the inn (this is where I learned D&D) and was a monk in Ayrn's campaign. He was a crybaby. I don't remember his name, but his monestary was burned down in front of his eyes, and he was bordering lawful-evil with his scaredy-cat attitude. I remember he attempted stunning fist on an orc who basically laughed at him and sliced him for 90% of his hitpoints. He curled up in a ball in the corner and cried after that...

Then they completed the mission and he got cocky after dropping a few low-level enemies....Ayrn said he'd continue the game at some point...I can't wait to see him get his butt handed to him again.

After that, one of my other early characters was a cleric who retired at 2nd level upon entering a town that didn't yet have a temple to his god. He retired to set up the temple and build it to its fullest....very short character. It was funny actually ...though it seems less so now.

Subject: Your Netrunner Croaker....

**The following is posted in close collaboration with Bromern Sal. Much of it is his words**

Spiff stepped out into the rain and watched Preacher turn away from Croaker, toward the night...toward his death. He blinked; the flakes of water flicked out of his eyes. He turned quickly to Scribe, touched his shoulder and said "Hold on just a moment."

Without waiting for a response, he rushed over to Preacher's retreating form. As he approached the man from behind, he spoke, "Yeh, though I walk through the valley."

Preacher had heard the other's noisy approach and knew it wasn't danger that came on, otherwise he was sure he'd have been warned of it by those he left behind, so he'd kept on walking, trying his best to ignore the sick feeling that was climbing in his gut.

The solo couldn't help but curl his lips in a pain-filled smile at the fixer's introduction. "One way or another, pardner. Death comes hunting us, and I'd sooner be fixed up and waitin' than walkin' around with a head full of fog an' pain. What can I do fer ya?"

"Let's face facts," Spiff smiled as the man turned to him, "you're dead without us, and we're dead without you. I need some medical attention myself, and that's my first priority. Why don't we go together?" Spiff took off his sunglasses and looked the man in the eyes. "I need your help. Just hear me out. If you don't like what I have to say, I won't stop you ridin' off into the sunset."

Preacher raised his brow and hunched against the storm. In this day and age one didn't turn your back on offers from people you were already involved with.

"I'm listening..."

"Not here," Spiff replied, turning back to see if his ride was still waiting. "Ride with me to the doc and we'll talk there." Spiff needed Preacher's help desperately, but he could see the man's distress in the rain. He figured it'd be much easier to talk indoors. Plus, and this was just a small sentiment, he really wanted to make Croaker feel like an a** for leaving the guy in the dust.

"I'm not dealing with a hackjob fer this," Preacher motioned at his head though it remained covered by his bloodstained hat. "I'm goin' t' Crisis Medical, or City Medical Center, Gato. They ask questions and take credit, not cash. If that's where you're headin' I don't see no harm in sharin' a cab."

As Spiff looked over his shoulder he saw that Scribe and Guardian had apparently had enough with waiting, heading towards that long stretch of dark green freckled by the occasional tree that separated the campus from the busy street between it and Lake Park where the infamous riots took place so many years before.

Spiff looked back at Preacher and considered him for a moment, putting his glasses back on. "Fair 'nuff. If that's what it takes to get you on my side, it's a risk I'm willing to take. We'll go to Crisis."

He motioned for the netrunner to follow and pursued the retreating figures of Scribe and Guardian. Worst case, they would at least know where the cabbies would be around here. This wasn't Spiff's side of town.

It was quick, quicker than most people could conceive of drawing a weapon. Moreover, since it was unexpected, it seemed even quicker (i.e. surprise round). Percifeer's eyes widened as Kastor spoke and she drew a wand from her pant leg...or belt...or....where was she keeping that thing? In any case, the wand was in Kastor's face as she leapt from her chair. She glared at him and spoke.

"Shut up before I kill you, imbecile."

((that would be quick draw, move action, standard action so that's a round. If no one reacts further, she will continue to talk, but I don't remember how many words a standard action is *I know a free action is only 6, but a standard action is longer*))

The hallway was lit rather reasonably by Valerick's holy symbol. The group approached the right turn that the gnome had found, and turned the corner. The hallway was just as he described, a U shape. In the light, they noticed that the walls held empty sconces. The 20 feet of travel, was brief, approaching another right turn.

The gnome took th lead again, peeking around the dark corner. What he saw was, rather surprising. About 30 feet down, the hallway ended. The hallway continued to be empty, but it was, as far as he could tell, completely purposeless. He motioned to the group, and they turned the corner, heading toward the dead-end...

Tram had been mulling over his thoughts, knowing full-well that they weren't approaching food. If anything, this was someone's home, but it looked clearly abandoned. The only strange thing was the trap earlier. He didn't know why, but he felt it unlikely that someone would abandon a place and leave their traps set in the process.

The Elf, however, made a more significant discovery. As they approached the dead end, he felt a distinct need to turn right, probably associated with his elvish roots. There was a door there, made of stone and nearly flush with the stonework of the cave. The door was distinctly different from the other doors the group had seen, not because it was stone, but because it slid to the side, rather than a swinging door. It must move into the wall itself.

((this is just a minor liberty))
Tram took the time to examine the door as it was pointed out to the group. Though he did not find any traps, he did find the door to be strange. There were strange markings on the door. The entire group brainstormed as they examined them and came up with a strange explanation. The markings were not of any magical origin that they knew of, but were more like claw marks. It seemed, though, that they did serve a purpose. They were patterned with 4 vertical struck across by one diagonal mark. Who(or what)ever made them clearly had a purpose. Near as they could tell, it was counting something. It could have been followers, or victims, or gold pieces. Whatever it was, there were a LOT of marks. The marks overlapped each other even. It was a strange revelation, but it clearly gave the group a clue as to what might lie behind the door.

Now, the decision was...did they proceed through it?
