Subject: Wait, what?

Spiff's eyes widened. He didn't recall mentioning that part of the conversation and it caught him off guard that the group had. He pulled out his gun carefully as he replied, checking his clip for ammunition. "Yeah, her name's Elizabeth, like I said." He sighed heavily. "She's a frackin' bitch at the moment and she owes me one. Apparently this was too big of a request for repayment, so she wouldn't let me cash in. Either way," Spiff popped the clip back into the gun and cocked it. "I ain't got time for her games."

He smiled at the guy that looked like a medic. Obviously this one was more observant than the rest to recall that part of the convo. "I'm Spiff, by the way." He extended a hand toward the medic. If this guy was good at healing and observant, he might be useful in the future.

Subject: Last Phone call for the moment is over...

The phone responded with the remake of Valley of Death once again, played through nearly a full stanza before being answered with The Reverend's typical, "God is watching." Though Spiff could tell there was concern in his voice this time around; probably derived from the way their last call had ended.

Spiff smiled, his back still against the side of the van. "Hey Rev, where were we?"

"Uh," the Reverend faltered a bit before continuing, apparently trying to decide whether to push as to what had happened or not. "Well, I believe I was just asking if ya know what kind of hot water you're about to tread? You'd just said something like, 'Ya' and then ya hung up."

Maybe he hadn't decided whether to press or not, but that didn't mean he wouldn't let Spiff know he didn't appreciate the sudden disconnect.

"So, I didn't get to tell you that I went ahead and did some of the usual research into this Hole since I got the blue screen when I pushed my query too far on Queen Merry Deth. And, I think I got some blueprints comin' your way. I've got a bite on a BBS anyway and they've not yet responded to my prompt. I should hopefully know within the next half hour."

Spiff was taken aback by the tone in his Lieutenant's voice. The Reverend should know better than to think he didn't have a good reason to hang up. He shrugged it off. If the Reverend had a problem with it, he could address it himself. "Thanks Rev. Send me those blueprints. I'll call you back in a half hour, so don't call me 'cause it may be an awkward time. I'll catch ya later"

He hung up, staring at his watch as he put his phone away. Time was running out. He addressed the group, still staring at the ticking clock. "Ok, I've got blueprints of this place so we won't go in blind. I will be getting more info in a half hour, but if they're digging up more firepower, we may not want to wait." He looked up at Croaker before continuing. "Something I almost forgot. Yes, she's still called Merry Deth, but the low-lifes in the gang have taken to calling her 'Queen Mary'. I don't know how much value that is, but it certainly tells us that she's no easy target. Anyhow, I'm just the newbie and I'm not fantastic with a gun. It's your gig Croaker, how we gonna run it?"

Welcome Blammm. Don't mind the rough and tumble intro. As you can see, the group was hard pressed to let me chill wit' em. Anywho, you may want to double check the back-posts a bit. I picked Coyote over Roller because Roller was clearly the more excitable of the two. If you pull out a translator for all of Brom's spanish (lousy brom!) you'll notice that it was a good guess on my part. Coyote is the cool, calm, collected type. So pulling that gun may not have been in character. Anywho, just a heads up, not in any way an attempt to influence your play. Ok, thanks ladies and gents. Any ideas on how to approach this building without being slaughtered wholesale? If they have enough peoople inside to send 7 of them out for extra firepower, we're Fracked....

Subject: Now for the REAL honesty...

"She is here." He sighed. "It appears I was mistaken. Seven of the guards that were here just bugged out, looking for more firepower I'm guessing. Still, none of them were female. She's still here and probably very well guarded. We're gonna need a better plan than to walk in blasting if we want to take her without a scratch, as I understand is the way her family wants her."

He glanced at his phone, debating pressing send on the Reverend's name. "I've got my lieutenant on the case and I need to see what else he knows. At the very least I imagine he can get us blue-prints so we aren't going into that building blind. Also, don't know if you guys know any of this, but she's dating one of the big-timers in the Wild Things. Stallion's his name."

He dialed the Reverend and put the phone to his ear. "Alright boys and girl, let's see if I can get us anything else before we run into the Hole digging for a face we've never seen."

Wow, he pulled a fast one on me. I expected Spiff to lie, but he didn't. I guess you guys are just too nice to him. He's all friendly to you guys. That's a bit odd. Oh, and the girlfriend thing was 'cause you pulled a gun on him after he called Peacekeeper "darlin" so he assumed you were jealous. The rest seemed like interesting observations. Feel free to correct me if I overplayed it (i.e. the Preacher thing may be excessive)

Subject: Phone Calls interrupted...

Spiff was still on the phone with Reverend as he noticed the others starting to pull guns on him. "Well now," he smiled, the phone still at his ear. "I'll have to call you back Rev." He stood up, his stop sign hand reaching out in front of Coyote to keep control at least over his own man in the situation.

Spiff pocketted his phone as several more guns were pulled and Coyote was asked to hand over his weapons. "You can stop disarming my guy. You're going to need him. Now chill for a sec, 'cause I'd be more than happy to go this alone and leave you all scraping at the gutters for some chick you ain't got a chance in hell of finding tonight. Simply, you guys have the firepower, but you ain't got the contacts." He glanced at Preacher, noting an obvious techie-ness about him and smiled. "Hell, I'll bet you guys have even been stompin' around blowing holes in things looking for answers. Bet you've even got a media or two on your tail. To think, you're worried about the guy who's here to help you, on Jack's request no less." He shook his head, looking at the floor.

"Now, my girl is called Elizabeth and she's a higher up in the Wild Things. I did not tell her about you all lady and gents. I told her that bringing Merideth to me would save her a whole lot of hassle though." He sighed, lowering his sunglasses to look Croaker in the eyes. "You can kill me if you think it'll do you any good sunshine, but I ain't after your girl," he glanced at Peacekeeper and grinned, "and I don't care if you guys want to run off without me. I'll go it alone and probably get the bird before you do, and with less hassle." He readjusted his sunglasses and motioned to Coyote to step back out of the van.

He sighed and looked back at the assembled crew. "I said you were rag-tag buddy. I never said you couldn't handle yourselves. So shoot me if you think it'll get you a leg up. But we're after the same thing, and like it or not, I got the connections to help you get it."

He was done talking to this crew. He picked up his cell phone again and started dialing his Lieutenant. Either way, he needed to finish that conversation.

Nice post Croaker! Spiff wouldn't see that one coming . But, to be honest, he isn't going to let you disarm his bodyguard. Sorry, but not a chance there. He'll draw on you just the same and return your "awareness/notice" with "fast talk/persuasion" besides, he'd be happy to go his own way on this mission. Subject: Phone Calls galore

The phone rang twice, then went to voicemail. "You've reached Choirgirl. Leave your number honey, and I might give you a call back... if you're lucky." Spiff sighed. He felt even more guilt at the possibility that the girl really could be at the locale after he said she wasn't.

He pulled the phone back from his ear and scrolled again. It was about time for the Reverend to have some info. The phone responded with a remake of Valley of Death. It hung that way for a couple of seconds before being answered, "Speak, and know that God is watching."

"Ok, Rev, you've had near an hour now. You got any info on the bird?"

"Actually, hombre, I was just getting ready to dial you." Spiff smiled at the others as the reverend talked. "Seems the little hussy never leaves this place near the bridge. They call it the Hole," his eyes widened and he put up his other hand, putting up a stop-sign, "but my sources say it ain't nothing like a hole. The Wild Things've been comin' into cash heavy lately an' this place is all hooked up. Local retailers've been selling Braindance, dealers on the street've been selling out of drugs, combat and recreational, and the street vendors've sold out of their heavy hardware. Those close t' the bid dog have taken t' calling little ol'd Merry Deth, Queen Mary. I was told t' shake it quick when I asked for more information on her direct-like. Seems they don't take kindly to people pokin' their nose in her business.

"You know what you got yerself into, gato? This is mucho caliente, neh?"

"Yeah, I know how deep I'm in Rev. Sadly, you don't. Look, what do you know about the Hole? Is there any info on how many gang members are in it? Moreover, have you heard any details about Wild Thing movement in the area recently? Heck, I'd take schimatics at this point!" Spiff looked about the band at the rag-tag bunch. If he was going after the 'Queen Mary' of the Wild Things, they were going to need more firepower. Sure, Spiff had an armed escort, but he'd be nothing more than a human shield after a few seconds of firing. Spiff wondered if Roller was too far away to call back...

Spiff's eye's widened and he looked at the floor of the van, idly flipping his phone open and closing it again. Either this is really the spot, or she's bluffing. He glanced at the other people in the van briefly before staring back at the floor. Well, according to me, sh*t's going down here, so either way I'd be at risk. But why would they leave? He couldn't make sense of any of it. But I gave her an easy way out.

His forehead tensed up again and he looked at the others once more, deciding on what to tell them. "Let me try that again." He smiled up at them, praying they wouldn't catch his lie. He scrolled back through the list. He clicked on "Choirgirl" and put the phone back to his ear.

“All right, gato,” Roller said. “Coyote’s got yer back. I’ll wait fer ya on the dark side. I’m out.” Sniffing again, he backed up three paces, flashed his gang’s symbol over his chest, then ducked into the cab.

As the others turned back to the van, Spiff massaged his forehead. Damn gangbangers givin' me a bad name. but his thoughts were interrupted by Coyote's voice.

“Well, amigo, I gotta tell ya, I don’t like this. Jus’ so’as ya know.”

I had to look up basic plans of the discovery online for my last post, and that had only a few hints at what the discovery is capable of. I'm not sure I'd be up for a tour without some guidance. Anybody got some blueprints or otherwise? Also, anybody got info from actual pilots about the ships feel and Mali's past experiences? I hear references to different major occurences, did she pilot any of these fantastic endeavors? I see little of it in my notes, and have no desire to read 200 pages of repetition at the moment.

Arevaci smiles and rested a hand on her shoulder in mock sterness. "Young lady, I'll have you know that I've been a spacer as long as I've been alive. I was born between the stars, and with luck I'll die out here as well. In my life, I've been aboard more ships than the total number of days I've been planetside."

Zara suppressed a giggle with a wide grin and peaked up at the Lieutenant.

Ducking down a bit and leaning to the side in an attempt to catch her eye, he continued. "More to the point, I love ships of all shapes and sizes. If that was a serious offer for a tour, I'll gladly take you up on it."

She looked up, smiling. "Alright," she tried to put up a mock stern attitude also. "But we can have none of this young lady business. You can call me Mali." She extended a hand toward his, shaking it firmly, "I would be happy to give you a tour." She grabbed her glass from the bar and stood up. "Do you think it's too late to do so now?" She looked about at the still collected staff as they had begun to weed out.

((wow that was short. Um...you're not supposed to get along with me!!! That's just wrong! You were supposed to hate her! *mutters*))

Sitting at the bar, sipping her drink, Zara noticed one of the newcomers approaching. It was Lieutenant Arevaci, the counselor. "Lt. Damali, was it not?"

She stood up out of courtesy. "Yes, sir."

“Christoph Arevaci. Two a's, one e, and an i, although I prefer Christoph to formalities in most cases.”

She grinned, "Pleasure to meet you Lieutenant"

“I couldn't help but notice that the welcome party wasn't exactly your cup of tea, so to speak. Personally, I prefer a smaller, informal sort of socialization as a general rule. Much more personal, less cluttered, if you take my meaning. I hope you don't mind if I take a seat...”

She suppressed a giggle by taking another sip of her drink. "I don't mind the welcome party, sir. It's the numbers that bother me. Like you said, smaller is better." She took another sip and took the seat next to him.

“So, what can you tell me about the Discovery? I've read the files, of course, but they can only tell you what a ship had done and what she's constructed of. They can never really tell you who she is, if you take my meaning."

She nodded, straightening out her face to show him she was serious when it came to ships, despite how easily delighted she was that someone had followed her to the bar. "This ship is a beauty." She motioned at the air around her, almost smacking the bartender. "She's strong for her size. She can take quite a beating, even by planet standards, and still be just as manueverable as she would be otherwise." She nearly leapt off of her barstool, still motioning widely. "I should give you a tour, show you how you can almost feel each room in this ship from the deck..." She stopped, her smile subsiding, and looked at the counselor.

"You're no pilot." She sighed, reaching for her drink, but realizing it to be empty. "Bartender, that was a fine drink. Can you impress me again?" She smiled down the bar at the dark gentleman cleaning a glass. She looked back at the counselor, her smile fading again. "Why do you want to know all of this? My job should be of little interest to someone in your field. The way the ship handles won't change the placement of your sofa." She looked at the floor, the weight of her last statement hitting her quickly. She stared at the floor waiting for his response.

It occurs to me that my last post looks someone ignorant and childish. Yes, I know there's another bar with the officers. And the thought processes are Mali's alone. Yes, she wanted to mingle and LEFT the crowd. That was intentional. She's a fascinating character to me, so I'm just letting her ride.

On a side note, Mali is not her given name, nor is Damali. Zara is her given name. Damali is her family name. Bajoran's give their family name's first. She goes by Mali for the ease of others primarily. (thanks Olan)

Zara carefully placed herself at the far end of the table. She knew that most of these officer types spent more time on paperwork than doing the jobs their crew did. She was the exception to the rule, and the only one dressed in red. She smiled at the others as they collected and seated themselves, wringing her hands.

She sat through the introductions, nodding as her name was noted last. Everyone seemed to mingle afterward. Mali felt sick to her stomach. She sat, staring at her glass of water until the toast. "To the Discovery" she mumbled and took a swig of her water. She stared at the others about the table engaged in conversations and flirtation, unsure of how to join in. She sat quietly through the meal, unapproached, smiling briefly when someone glanced in her direction. Well, she thought, generally poeple meet at bars right. As she finished eating, she stood and walked over to the bar, on the other side of the red rope. She stepped up to the bartender. "I'll have a...um..." She thought for a second, "surprise me." she smiled, knowing it wouldn't take much to surprise someone who hadn't set foot in front of a bar before.

He handed her something with a cherry on a toothpick in it and smiled. "Something pink for the lady." he grinned. She smiled back and sat on the stool, slipping at first. Regaining her balance she sipped at the glass and winced. Why would anyone drink this stuff? she shuddered and looked about the room, this side largely empty aside from one table with that guy who talks funny at it.

She tried to remember his name. "Something dood." she chuckled.

"Sorry, need something?" The bartender stepped back, cleaning a glass idly.

Mali's eyes widened. "Nothing," she blinked briefly. Whoops. she thought, taking another sip of her glass, not wincing so much this time.

"Do you really think I would be teamed up with these “small timers” if they weren’t any good?"

Spiff grinned, suppressing a laugh. "You're overreactin' darlin'." He smiled widely at the group. "I'm not saying any of you aren't quality gunmen. I've just never heard of anyone named 'Croaker' before."

Then the one named Croaker spoke up. "Ok Spiff if what you say is true and the target is not here then we need to beat feet out of here to another possible local to find said target. On top of that you if what you say is true and they know something’s going on in relation to the target then we need to move now as we are out in the open here with no real cover. Now seeing as it seems you got Jack’s ok to be in on this run and you got info and the connections we need, ya might wanna speed things up and ride with us and we can go over what ya got and come up with a plan, but we only got room for you and one of your muscle boys, so send the other one and that taxi home as we don’t need the cabbie as a witness to any future events."

Peacekeeper gave a curt nod to Spiff, “Let’s get on with this, shall we?”

Spiff sighed. He didn't want to lose one of his gunmen. He turned reluctantly to the one called Roller. He had no use for someone overeager pulling a gun too soon and shooting his target. "Coyote, you're with me. Roller, sorry you can't ride with. We'll arrange the value of your time for the ride tomorrow. Reverend will give you my digits. Hasta luego, Muchacho." He smiled. He always liked showing off the little bit of language he knew.

"Alright, I'm playin' it your way. No arguments from my end. Let's just get the target" he glared at Croaker, "before time's out, ok?" Spiff double-checked his alarm, assuring that it was still set for 5 minutes before the call deadline. He followed the group to the van.

Stardate 2366.10.21 Lt. Zara's quarters.

Mali woke in a start that morning. She felt unprepared for something, but she wasn't sure what it was. After leaping out of bed, she checked her watch. Sure it was outdated, but she never felt complete without it. It read: 5:55am. She breathed. She went to her desk and shuffled some papers about, mostly starcharts. After a few minutes organization, she showered and sat on the bed in her towel, wringing the moisture out of her hair idly.

"The time is 6:25am and you requested to be awoken at this time. Lt. Zara please respond."

"I'm here," she replied. She stared at the floor, thinking about how long she'd been on this starship and had hardly gotten to know anyone. Sure, she wasn't here to make friends, but surely it couldn't hurt. Still, she had a sinking feeling in her stomach. I have so much I need to do. Anyone else might have thought those words a lie, but to Mali they were the only words she knew. She dressed and grabbed some breakfast, idly grabbing something edible from the mess hall and eating as slowly as possible to pass the time before her shift.

She stopped back by her room to brush her teeth and straighten her uniform before moving to the bridge. She felt ancy but knew she was still too early to rush to her shift. She relieved her subordinate 10 minutes before her 0800 shift and checked all of the numbers twice before sitting down.

Over the course of her shift she heard brief interjections of things like "change of roster" and "meeting at 1100 hours" and thought the course change might have a significant effect on it. Moreover, based on a reading of the ETA, she was going to be pulling a longer shift and probably not getting off until 1830 or later. She was glad of it. She always felt uncomfortable when her relief came.

As the end of her shift came and went, she focused on the course ahead, and nothing else. At 1650 she noticed another ship on her scanners. It was the Valmont.

“Commander,” Lt. Zara called back over her shoulder.

“Yes,” Avanti responded while Kel sat quietly with a smile on his face.

“We’ve just picked up the Valmont on long-range scanners.”

“Reduce speed to maximum impulse.”

“Yes, sir,” she carefully adjusted the speed, smiling.

At 1720 there was some uncomfortable shifting from the captain's seat as one person then another, then another took the seat. "Helm, how long until we rezvendous?"

Mali's hands flew across her display for a moment before she answered. "E.T.A. is fifty-two minutes, sir."

“Maintain course and speed, lieutenant.”

As the time approached, she watched the ship show up on her viewscreen and approached them carefully. MacTavish spoke, "Commander, they be hailin' us."

Avanti nodded. "Put them onscreen, please."

"Thank you, sir. Lieutenant MacTavish, you have the bridge." That was a shock, she'd never been under MacTavish's command before. She shrugged it off.

“Lt Zara,” he said, “bring us aboot an’ bring ‘er ta all stop.”

"Sir, yes sir." She gave him a full military response, hoping to help him feel more at home. If the change were of the higher-ups (as it appeared to be) he'd be spending more time in that chair, so he should get used to it.

After the rendevouz, about 1845, her relief came. He was a younger pilot, and a bit ancy himself. She kinda liked that about him. It made her more confident passing the seat to him. She had a dinner to attend to.

Re-entering her quarters, she took time to change carefully. She wouldn't stand for being treated like a girl amongst men. Dressing her best, she put on a dark blue pants-suit, carefully applying a bit of blush and skintoned eyeshadow to look professional, but not too feminine.

She arrived ten minutes early, at 2050 and took her seat, watching the others arrive with her back stiff, still focusing on a professional appearance. At 2055 the meeting started.

(I suppose that's it for now...)
