((I took a little leeway with placement of wording interspersed with Percifeers words mostly so we could move things along. Feel free to correct me if you find it inappropriately placed/worded.))

As Percifeer released her embrace with Miran, she briefly realized that there was a battle still occurring. She glanced about, and, seeing the thieves retreating into the back alley, she went back to catching up.

"Father couldn't tell me much in the time he had to spare, so I will have to learn much of the details from you, shall we enter?"

"The orphanage has been accused of theft of a rather valuable item, and--" At this point Percifeer had started heading back to the thug leader's corpse, but Pio got there first, and was dragging it to her. As he pulled the bolt from the corpse, she yanked it from his hand, still talking to Miran. "And these thugs were trying to rob us..." but she had caught Pio's glare, something she knew all-too-well from her days at the orphanage.

“Miss Percifeer, however, was a bit slighted that one of this guy’s wench’s nearly put bolt through her pretty face.”

"The little ***** deserved this arrow, but shooting her would only have kept the thugs longer."

Pio gave her another look and spoke again, “You know, Percy, you didn’t have to kill the man. We made a deal with him – thirty-five guain, plus what they stolen, plus they got to walk away with their lives. I gave him my word.”

Percifeer felt cold in the face, her hands were cold, but sweaty, and she raised an eyebrow at her long-lost authority figure. "You gave the man money after they shot at me?!? And you expect ME to care about YOUR WORD?!?"

She wiped the blood from the arrow head onto her pant leg and waved it at Pio, stepping toward him as she talked. "You can talk all day to a bunch of low-lifes, but I ain't gonna just sit back and take it in the face while you do."

She put the bolt back in the quiver and turned back to the others. But Pio wasn't done speaking. "I don’t mind bloodshed… but there just wasn’t any honor in this. You shot him in the back, Percy. Can you at least call him out next time?” He looked at the beautiful woman, with eyes pleading, “For me, at least?"

"He turned his back when I shot. It wasn't like he didn't know what I was doing loading my bow." She went back and picked up her crossbow, pulling the bolt from it and putting it in her quiver also, firing the empty bow and hooking it back onto her belt.

"Perhaps we should sit down and discuss the current situation with our tardy kin before heading out to the Heart of Darkness... perhaps we can kill two birds with one stone." Llamoth was apparently trying to change the subject, and I'm sure everyone welcomed it.

"I think that's fair, but I can bet Pio will hope there won't be any 'killing' in the 'Grommel'"

I can't speak for other people, but I will say here something I haven't said in other game threads. I am NOT very big on being the first to post after the DM. It was only recently that I started getting used to the idea in Brom's Cyberpunk game and I've been part of that for ages. Don't get me wrong, I am usually second to post, because once someone else has broken the ice, I feel MUCH more comfortable.

I posted this for two reasons. 1) so you all know that posting first is an almost-sure-fire way to get me to post. 2) because I think it might be possible that others feel the same way, and I wanted to get it out there to those of you who may not know.

Well, after that point, the crossbow is largely useless to her. It's sole purpose is for True Strike, lol. Sorry, I just thought about what she would do. How many times has she leaped at people as they arrived into the group? Why would this be any different.

Subject: Not too long, but carefully worded

Percifeer had heard her comrades speaking, but she had not heard their words. She was focused on her actions, so all she caught was that her allies had still chosen to pay these thugs after she had been shot at. She did not slow or stop her actions.

Just as she finished her incantation and raised her bow, another thug entered the alley and she fired on the leader. As she did, she spoke "Drop our money and we'll let the rest of you leave with your lives." She was angry....no, she was furious. She pulled another crossbow bolt and cocked her crossbow again, loading the bolt.

Then she saw who the other thug was, and dropped her crossbow as he spoke. "Miran? It's been so long!" Completely forgetting about the battle, she rushed over to hug him. ((take it from here Mr. DM))

I find that, over time, I've grown to HATE Chaotic Neutral. At least with Chaotic Evil you're ready for them to screw over the party. With Chaotic Neutral you can only count on them to screw over the party at the worst possible time.

"The spells you're casting at the charging enemies aren't working...in fact, the enemies are getting larger every time you cast an attack spell."

"Screw it, I hide in the woods."

"But your party is charging in, and you're their only spellcaster! They don't even have a cleric!"

"I don't care, I'm playing my character, he's Chaotic ME"

Death Ensues....

I hate that alignment...

Heh, sounds inventive. But to play a good game, I find an important part is having mature gamers and a mature DM. It's hard to find any of the above who have that much free time on their hands. My DM has thrown out a FEW props in his day. He likes to do maps, and he has a lot of fun catching important papers on fire. What do I mean? Well, when we finally find the map while the bad-guys are in the process of throwing all the important paperwork in the fire. And one time the party knocked a piece of paper into the fire and he had foreseen it and pre-burned the corner of the page off....in midsentence of the "No matter what don't -". So yeah, we do some props, but we always say "If you want real life, go outside." Good survey, I will keep up with this one.

Whether Percifeer hadn't heard the others, or simply didn't care, she continued her task at hand, uninterrupted. ((I suspect she's almost to the incantation, you may wish to hurry this)) She did, however, take a bit of time to roll up her sleeves, for what it's worth...

One of my DMs does something similar. He is constantly reiterating that using "detect alignment" in a city full of ban worshipers etc. will ping a lot of Lawful Good because in THEIR eyes they're good. I don't know if I agree with all of his argument there, but you must remember that alignment is very subjective.

Topic: Filthy Thief Q/A
Subject: Quick Note

I post this mostly because it took me a while to realize possible confusion with my post due to my less-than-clear-mind at the moment. I made some assumptions there. A: Percifeer is a sorceress, therefore casts spells slightly differently than wizards (thus she spoke common there rather than draconic)) If that is unacceptable, then it is fine that she speaks those words in draconic, as they will make no more sense to anyone than if she had been speaking in orcish to the half-orc in the party, and little more sense than the words did in common anyway. B: I also assumed that Pio will continue to try to calm the enemies. If that is not the case, then she would, of course, join the foray immediately in the manner explained (quick draw, load, spell, fire).

If I was right....you've got about 15 seconds Pio based on my math of how long it takes to slowly move through those actions. I hope, for their sake, you get them to leave by then.

Topic: You Filthy Little Thief!!!
Subject: Oh NO you didn't!

Percifeer had been patient with these twits. Arms crossed, she had let Pio take charge as they were attempting to rob her...that is, until one fired a crossbow bolt at her.

She didn't rush the next few actions. As Pio talked she took her time, drawing her crossbow from the hook on her hip, pulling back the bowstring to cock it into place, and then loading a bolt. Not only were they threatening her, but they were incompetent shots at that. She had no use for these peons.

If, at any point before the bolt was loaded, the group attacked, she would drop the crossbow and resort to her spells, summoning a beast between the evident attackers and her party, then protecting herself with mage armor, and resorting to her wand only if her allies began to fall.

However, if they said nothing, she would stare at her bow, muttering "Let my arrow fly true, destroying my target with speed and vengence." ((true strike)) She wouldn't wait for Pio to finish his speech, she would target the leader (or whomever seems to be the leader) ((called shot, heart)) and fire the crossbow straight through his heart, dropping him dead on the spot, and leaving the rest of them leaderless, and likely unorganized.

Hey, I'm still here. I definitely haven't lost interest. First thing was, I was intending (as magic users are support characters) to post after one or two other players in this regard. Then, unfortunately, I caught a rather nasty bug. I still am having trouble posting this actually.

Further, as I was reading your post, something occurred to me, which you will see on the character sheet. Percifeer doesn't have a purse. All of her money is in her bag of holding, and if that was cut, (she probably would have felt the magical aura vanish) she will be FURIOUS. The enemies will NOT be walking away. There won't even be pieces of them left to interrogate.

A little input on my part. Perhaps it will help explain my character's actions a bit. First, I have to say I honestly don't agree. Today, it's still hacking when you change your shut-down screen on your computer, even though you're not touching other people's computers. It's low-level hacking, but hacking none-the-less. So it's still "sorta" netrunning when you are covering up tracks on the net. Second, he's still lying anyway, though Spiff doesn't know it. I recall a post where he was trying to jack into a phone line outside a Wild Things club .

On a side note, the fact that Spiff is mixing the two is a dead give-away that he doesn't care so-much about jacking in as just covering their tracks. There are pretty decent odds Preacher could manage that without jacking in, which is exactly what Spiff is saying, and all that he's really asking.

Spiff ain't askin' for a top-o-the-line netrunner. If he was on that level, do you think he'd be working for jack? Honestly, he's just trying to expand his organization's capabilities in a direction he hasn't yet gone, which he will clarify as necessary to Preacher.

Also, the reason I post this here, is 'cause I can't find a good way to put it into the in-character portion of the post.

Percifeer was already on her feet when Ormander arrived at the door. She had heard who was coming and rushed to give her a hug. "Llamoth!" she shouted knowing the half-orc didn't exactly like being hugged. The 6 years since they had seen each other were overcoming her. "It's been so long!" and just as she was about to engage her in a long conversation she noticed the rest of the group staring at her, and sat back down. She listened to the arguments/statements made by the party and interjected only one thing.

"I still think we should put the word out on the thieves' network to get the information out there. But, since we have our own bit of the network here, perhaps we can skip that step. What do we know about the theft? Has it been fenced?"

“I don’t run no more, Spiff. What I did back there was pretty basic, pretty dirty. I’m a street samurai now, an’ that’s it.”

Spiff wasn't just shocked by the nasty look Preacher gave him, but by the flat out lies that he was spewing. Though it hadn't been full-out, he had run for Spiff, dropping that forum message only a few hours ago.

"That ain't gonna fly cowboy." He shifted his weight and grabbed the bridge of his nose, massaging away the building headache. "I could use a full-time gunman just as much as a 'runner, but an 'I don't do that anymore' excuse is bull and you know it." He stood much shorter than this big man, and probably wouldn't stand a chance drawing a gun faster than him, but this was way beyond what Spiff was up for dealing with this evening.

He flipped open his phone and waved it at Preacher. "What did you do just 2 hours ago? I'm not asking you to jack in all day every day. I just know that none, and I repeat NONE of us will survive if we don't have someone keeping this megacorp off our scent." He dropped his phone, it could handle the fall. It wasn't just a simple demonstration of how frustrated he was, but he wanted to symbolize the following words with the sound of the electrodes crashing to the ground.

"Without someone like you, we're all dead. So maybe you should understand what I'm asking here. I'm not asking you to put your life on the line every day like this big guy here;" Spiff motioned at the bodyguard next to Scribe, "instead, I'm asking you to get paid to do something you know. I got no problem with you blasting away whoever pisses you off, but I need you to save our asses here. You're gonna bail on people who just spent the whole night gunnin' down gang bangers with you for what? You are turning down a paying job, where you get to 'street samurai' to your heart's content AND get paid for it because why? What's worse, I'm not even asking you to do it solely for me, but doing this will be protecting yourself. What kind of rationale are you using here? You aren't makin' any sense here. You gotta give me more than that."

He knelt down, picking up his phone and closing it, checking that it lit up in the right ways before popping it back into his pocket. "Now I'm gonna ask this as a guy who knows what you're worth, and a man who knows how much cash is in your pocket." He took a deep breath and looked Preacher square in the eyes. "What's it gonna take to get you on board?"

((will backpost further as necessary))

“You scuffed the casing’s all, Spiff.” Scribe looked down at his bag where his precious camera was stowed. “Everything still works fine. Look, the cab’s on me. It’ll drop you boys wherever you want to go, but I, for one, am going to a motel where I’m going to try and catch a few hours of sleep before starting on the second leg of this adventure."

"I hope you're right, those were armor piercing rounds. I appreciate the ride, and all your generosity this evening, but that wasn't the crux of our conversation gato. What about the broadcast?"

((will backpost further as necessary))

Spiff sat in the cab, examining the hole in his jeans. He'd need to get a new pair, because repairs never quite looked right on jeans. The cab ride was, fortunately uneventful. The shocking part for him was, when they arrived, Scribe paid for Spiff/Preacher's room also. Jason stopped him, giving him the cash back for the cost of his room. "I appreciate the sentiment gato, but your pocket's hurtin' also this evening. If you're not gonna meet up for lunch tomorrow, we should iron out the details now. Otherwise, I'll get my own ride tomorrow...unless you want to make small talk this time. The silence is killin' me."

When he got to his room, Spiff found it more than adequate.
((insert further conversation with Preacher here after backpost))
One might not think it's dingy attitude was Spiff's style, but this was nicer than most of the coffin motels he was used to crashing in. Dress nice, sleep cheap. That was the way you avoided detection on the streets. Never fit your persona.

He didn't trust the hotel alarm. Instead, he plugged in his phone to charge and set its alarm for 10:00am (or whatever time is necessary to go through the following activities you'll see and get to the destination by noon) letting the tone play-through once just as a last-minute check of how his phone was handling him dropping it earlier. Then he set the alarm clock the motel provided for 10:05am just in case.

Checking the blinds were closed, Spiff dropped his jacket on his duffle-bag next to the bed. He pulled his "Mark II" out of his side holster and ejected the clip, putting it on the nightstand to pop the round from the chamber with a swift jerk at the top of the gun. He caught the chambered round as it flew through the air (awkwardly) in his arms and let it roll down to his palm.

He put the shell back into the top of the clip and locked the gun in the open-chamber position as he set it next to the clip on the night stand. He was used to sleeping with his holdout on his ankle, and there was no way that was coming off him with someone else in the room. Not someone who was going to survive the encounter at least.

He fell onto the bed and closed his eyes, his head was throbbing and he was asleep in just a few moments. When he awoke in the morning, he jumped into the shower immediately, taking only time to get his overnight kit from his bag. He spent a full 20 minutes waking his body in the hot water and nursing his leg. He didn't leave the bathroom for another 10 minutes, shaving, using the bathroom, and brushing his teeth.

He combed his hair and put on his boxers, leaving the bathroom and tossing his jeans and t-shirt onto the bed. He pulled out his suit and dress shirt and put it on. He sighed as he pulled out his very expensive leather shoes and put them on. He could hear the rain outside the window, but he needed to buy new jeans, plus those were bloodstained and he needed to be professional. Besides, he wanted to check out how his jacket was doing after last night's Bloody Mary.

((this may look like I took liberties, but I didn't. This is irrelevant of Preacher's decision to work for me))

"Alright Preacher, I want you to meet the gang. Reverend's my right hand man. He'll be the one you'll need to get to know for the rest of your job." He put the clip back in his Mark II and chambered the round, sheathing it in his holster. He then threw the trenchcoat over the ensemble, mostly to protect it from the weather, but it would also help serve the purpose of covering up his weapon.

He stretched one more good time, put his jeans and shirt back into the bag, packing up his overnight-kit and zipping the bag and checking if Preacher was ready to find Scribe and head out.

I'm having a bit of trouble with this post. I'm trying to figure out my relationship with our new player...don't rush this, let me explain. Based on exponential growth (not as complicated as it sounds) it was MUCH more likely for her to remember Pio than Llammoth. Also, the 5 years, though a brief time, was (as I understood it) a time of great growth for the orphanage, separating the two even more. On the other hand....Orcs are much shorter-lived creatures. They breed like rabbits too, so 17 is actually very old (several kids type thing) for an orc, so Llammoth, which would put her in Percifeer's age group. The question is, is this out Ormander would have done things? Would this mean they would have likely been close? I am very confused as this character throws a big monkey wrench into my whole concept unless I understand more.

Thanks,
Sui

BROM: I hope I didn't screw that up too bad. I don't know a lot about how a fixer expands his organization. Even if it's not official in terms of level, he still might work with me and that's good enough. In any case, the long-overdue conversation has been had with Preacher. I know that if I was in his shoes, with the long car-ride and everything, he's been trying to figure out what it was. Now you know. “OK,” Scribe began casually as he eyed the dark street. “Let’s iron some things out, shall we?”

“Yeah,” Preacher interrupted. “Let’s. You said you had an offer for me, Spiff?”

Spiff glanced about from under the awning. It was still raining, so that would drown out most of the sound from pedestrians, and the late hour would clear most of the street, but he wanted to be sure there was no one listening.

"Fair enough," he replied, turning to Preacher. "As I said before," he motioned at Digital Scribe behind him, "I'm going to put every penny I have into keeping those nutjobs alive out there on that suicide mission. To be honest, I'd need a guy like you to help." Spiff paused. This wouldn't do, he was still a fixer like this. He pulled off his glasses and put them into the inside pocket of his coat. "But that's not what I want. I want you to work for my organization. That means for the moment you'll be able to stay out of the spotlight and give these boys a hand. It means steady pay and a decent safety net if sh*t hits the fan. It also means that you'll be working for me though, so what you think of me is what matters." He sighed. There was still more to say. "I don't need a bodyguard. That trash I brought with me was just eye-candy to establish rank. I need a netrunner," He dug in his pocket and pulled out his phone, "and from what I've seen you'd fit well in the role." Spiff paused, wishing he could sweeten the deal a bit more and brought up one other point. "If you still want to ride the streets playin' cowboys and indians, that fits fine into my needs to, but the netrunning would be a great way to relax while your injuries heal. What do ya say, Cowboy?"

((After this conversation, 'cause it may not be over))

"Scribe," Spiff turned to the man that had been mighty helpful despite the sh*t that had gone down this evening. "I told you I'm going to fix your camera; what did you need?"

When Olivia came to the room, she lingered for a moment longer on Percifeer than the rest of the group. It would have been very unusual for Percifeer to point this out, so when she turned to leave, Percy called to the girl "What is it Olivia?"

((after this conversation))

Then she pondered moves forward. She was thinking mostly about the best ways to get around the town of her childhood. Unfortunately, Kastor interrupted her thought pattern.

She turned to the dwarf, motioned for him to look closely at her, and pursed her lips. She then made the motion of turning a key in a lock over her lips, and then flicked 'the key' away. It was fortunate for them both, surely, that Pio then chose to speak.

“Here’s what thinking we can do. I say, let’s head over to the court house and see if we can’t find this herald that spoke with father. If there’s time, on the way back, perhaps we could speak with the authorities who investigated the theft, if there even was an investigation. Later, over supper, perhaps we can talk with the children about what they have heard so far. Maybe, we can go catch a drink over at the Broken Grommel Tavern?”

"I think that's fair," Percifeer replied, "but I think timing is important here, so we should do those things that will take the longest to get us information first. Perhaps we should put the word out on the 'thieves highways' tomorrow and see if we can get a bite."

((assuming an affirmative))

Pio Continued, “Some other suggestions?”
