Subject: Spiff limps out...

When the phone rang, it didn't play 'The Valley of Death', but instead played Amazing Grace. Rev wasn't available... On top of this, as Croaker was leaving, Jack had taken the time to give him a speech of disappointment.

"You've reached The Reverend's answering service. Sing for God, child, and he'll speak free to me."

BEEP

Spiff waited, until Jack finished speaking to respond. It would've been disrespectful to Jack to do so, and he and Jack had known each other a while. Heck, in the past, Spiff had even used Jack's advice to save his own life, and Jack had lent him Piper to teach him how to handle a gun. He didn't know how to react to Jack's disappointment, but his chest was tight and his leg was aching as he listened.

When Jack had finished, Spiff pressed the 're-record your message' button and spoke into the voicemail briefly, but loud enough for Croaker, who was only just outside, to hear. "Good work tonight Rev. Meet me at the Red Lantern tomorrow at noon. Bring the rest of the crew if you can find 'em."

Digital Scribe then took the time to speak to him. "Rough night?" he said with a chuckle. "I thought you had him pegged, Gato. Guess I jumped the gun a bit on that estimation."

Spiff responded, looking out the door at Jack's crew as they left. "Me too."

"You'd best be trailing after that bunch, Preacher. Looks like your ride's leaving." Spiff turned back. He hadn't realized the netrunner hadn't left yet. As he left, Spiff didn't bother to stop him. He simply spoke to him as he walked past.

"Thanks for your help choomba." He didn't like that word, but it was the best he could think of.

Digital Scribe spoke to him again. "We'll be heading for a hotel--catch a few winks of sleep before I get to work. You're welcome to hitch a ride, Choombatta. If there was one thign I got out of all this crap was that if we don't find a way to work together, we're all dead--well, you folks are all dead. I'm not exactly sure they know I'm involved just yet." The media leaned towards Spiff and winked, "I think that's my edge."

As Digital Scribed nudged Spiff's shoulder, he returned the conversation. "I think I'll take that offer. Probably not wise to call a cab to this place right about now." Spiff put his phone away and followed Guardian out, limping.

The group descended into the dark hallway. It was perhaps only 20 feet down when most of the group found themselves completely blind by the dark. Only a few could see at all, and the elf knew that his vision wouldn't lead much further before he was also blind.

"Is it still necessary to maintain the dark," Valerick's voice echoed, even in his whisper.

Well, I didn't see anyone or any creatures so far, so if you want to light something up, be my guest. It doesn't affect me at all," Tram said this, closing his eyes to allow them to adjust to the change in light when it came.

"sure light something up i am bored of this gloom" Riaharan's whisper confirmed the task, and the Maenid touched his Holy symbol. A soft, unintelligible, word later it glowed like a torch, leading their way further down the hall.

Riaharan broke the silence, looking down the hall at the right turn that the gnome had just pointed out. "I think we should start to move onward I would take the first steps but because of my injury i think it would be best if i went in the middle for now at least"

Percifeer heard Ormander reference the bracelet and looked down at her wrist. It was still there, even after all this time. Her left hand grasped it, massaging the skin under the aged leather band, running her thumb across the silver impression of her father's house. She had forgotten it...never even thought to take it off. It was her home. Everywhere else she went, well that was just travels. This was her home, the place she grew up, the place she could count on anyone, no matter what she had done through all those years of stupidity and youth. This was her home, and there were authorities threatening it.

But what of this...She looked up, listening to the questions the others asked. When Ormander had finished answering them ((this assumes he hasn't repeatedly said "NO IT'S NOT ONE OF US")) she opened her mouth to speak, but nothing came out at first. His eyes scanned the group, much like he had when asking for admission of guilt in her childhood, and came to rest on her with her mouth still open, she closed it, and lifted her bracelet hand, wiping it across her lips, though they were frightfully dry to the touch. She inhaled deeply and spoke.

"Father, there would be no need for you to hide from us if one of the children had taken it. Whether that is the issue, or it is truly a plot against you, the group sitting here with me," She looked around at the rather elaborate assortment of weapons and armor that surrounded her in the form of skilled warriors, "either would be a cause within our power to deal with. But if we are to pursue the cause, then we me must be certain, of which all we truly need is your word Father, that this is a set up, and not a streak of stupidity on the part of one of our brethren." She took a sip of her tea, before finishing her statement. "If that is the case, then we will go to whatever lengths necessary to protect our home, of this I have no doubts."

Percifeer followed Ormander around the orphanage and was utterly dumbfounded with how much had changed in so few years. She was delighted to see that Ormander was doing so well...but... What could be so important to collect such a group when he was clearly taking care of things here? The thought was quickly erased from her head when Ormander turned back to his office and she saw another of her childhood friends.

"Alexandro!!" She shrieked reaching her open hand into the air. She hadn't been big on 'hand slaps' since she left the orphanage, but it had always been her way of saying 'hi' to Alexandro and it was habitual when she did it.

The gnome took his time sneaking down to the end of the corridor. When he got there, he held his back to the wall and peered slowly around the corner. It was obvious from this position that the hallway only turned right, it did not continue further. He saw around the corner, that the hallway became darker. The hall went 20 feet to another right turn. Yet again, it did not continue further.

As per his specific statements to the others, he turned and headed back to tell them.

Subject: Taggart's drink

Stardate:2374.08.31
USS Cerberus – Deck 5 near the lounge – 1430 hours

SSgt Taggart approached the lounge, empty and seemingly untouched. He smiled and tapped the replicator. "Wake up sunshine, I need a drink." =/\\= What would you like, Sergeant Taggart =/\\= I love that she knows my name his smile was widening when he spoke again. "I'm gonna keep it light for now, how about a Jack 'n Coke." and the drink appeared in the replicator.

James picked it up and took a gulp, pouring the glass down the drain and putting it back in the chamber. "You can do better than that! There's hardly any alcohol in that drink at all!" When his drink reappeared, it was brown, rather than black, and there were hardly any bubbles of carbonation at the top. Tasting the drink, his face flexed and he tossed his head to the side. "Much better, remember my preference for next time please darlin'." He stepped around the bar and sat on the outside, despite the lack of a bartender. He sipped at his drink for a good 20 minutes or so before anyone showed up. His drink was half-empty when he turned to see the young ensign stepping into the lounge. The man had shifted uneasily when James turned toward him. It was Jimmy Loanne who had come to the lounge.

Jimmy was a younger recruit, fresh out of boot for this mission. He hadn't had exemplary marks in any of his physical tests, but was rather quick in the head. He always seemed to have a backup plan during his simulations, which was rare these days. With the wars and all, most recruits were just brutes who were all too eager to smash in heads until the found out how unpleasant it really was. Jimmy only paused for a moment, then straighted his fatigues (obviously he hadn't changed in the process of unpacking) dropped his arms to his sides and walked straight-legged to the bar.

James had found himself liking this recruit, and this was one such occasion that a sense of...pride was it?....welled up in his chest. He really saw Jimmy as someone who could pursue his career a long way. So James picked up his drink from the bar and stood as Jimmy approached. He had long gotten used to the boy's nervous walk. He was bee-lining for the barstool and would not move for anything. James duplicated the walk straight at the man, looking at first like he was headed for the door as well. His smile widened as Jimmy unsuccessfully tried to avoid him (James wasn't making it easy on him) and they nicked shoulders. Staff Sergeant Taggart's drink was jostled and fell to the floor, shattering on impact.

Jimmy's eyes were wide and his cheeks were white. James turned back to him, giving the appearance of being flustered and upset. "Clean it up Loanne," he shouted, as he left the lounge. Darn it he liked that boy.

He went back to his bunk, unpacked and inspected his room. He seemed to have everything he needed here on Deck 5. He could run PT in the gym, hit the lounge in the evenings, and then sleep out here. The occasional simulation would be necessary, but he could find that when the time came. For now, it was inspections. He was surprised to see that the inspections went well, and he found himself ducking under bunks to find anything for which to penalize them tomorrow. Perhaps two hours was too long. Having a scapegoat was one of the most important parts of training new assignments. He was a bit frustrated that he wouldn't be able to rag on one member tomorrow, but he was sure to find someone soon.

Almerin, after seeing Ayrn's character, I see you're giving us a bit more leeway with magic items/feats than I originally thought. I'm curious if I could trade in my amulet of natural armor for a wand of summon monster I? It will save me 1250gp and drop my AC from 19 to 18 (14 w/o mage armor). Is that reasonable?

Percifeer squeezed Ormander possibly a bit too hard, but as she released him she heard the other person speaking. She had missed the first part in her shrieks of joy, but caught these words.

"he still hasnt told me what all this is about but i hope its good i guess us two and some others are working together to help my old friend ormander"

She was turning when Ormander shouted out the doorway. She heard a very familiar voice reply. The boy whom she had spent quite a lot of time playing silly games with during her time in the orphanage.

“Alright,” it was definitely Arthur! “But I swear I didn’t do it this time! If it was bad enough you had to call me here after all these years for something you just found out I did, you are getting slow in your old age.”

Sure enough, he stepped into the door covered in studded leather and quivers. She grinned and waved from across the room. It wasn't the customary actions of a lady that stopped her from hugging him, but the pointy arrows sticking out every-which-way.

Closely behind him, as she grabbed a cup of tea, followed someone else. He was a bit larger than her, but small by most standards of fighters. She only thought of this because he was wearing full-plate, something she rarely saw, especially not on men of his size. She noticed, however, as he entered the room he was eyeing her...but those eyes. Pio?

He spoke, eliminating her doubt clapping the other adventurer on the back, “Kastor, my friend! Still got the patience of a khord, I see. Must actually be in the blood, hmmm? We all know Ormander doesn’t talk business until everyone’s belly is warmed up by at least two cups of tea.” She hadn't realized it until he said it, but the man in the chair was a bit short. It seems he was a khord, which would explain the gruff voice and apparent lack of patience.

In any case, the man showed himself to have the charisma of a leader in his introductions, despite the appearance of a warrior. This was, to Percifeer, not unlike Pio, but certainly a rare change to the wizards she met who, if they had charisma at all, were daintily feminine in that nature. She was rather struck with his smile, and she realized she had missed him, an emotion she was not used to. She sipped her tea quietly until he approached her, and she found herself getting goosebumps when he grabbed her hand. Certainly this was a strange eye he was giving her. He had been her authority figure, never looking at her like this.

“And Percifeer. Well! You are looking very well. How is it that your husband has let you so far from his sights? I should think a man in possession of such a great treasure would want to keep it close at all times... so as not to lose it.”

Percifeer was not surprised by the line, but more that it had come from him. She did not argue with the kiss she expected him to plant on his hand, but waited until his mouth was tied up with it to speak, making a pointed effort to smile mischievously as he would remember from years ago. "I do not do husbands. They tie a girl down and leave her little freedom to come and go as she pleases." She waited until he had released her hand to continue, her smile widening as she spoke, "I left the man I love locked in a tower where I could keep him under my thumb and go where I want, when I want."

It probably was not wise to say something like that in front of someone who closely resembled authority, but she was among friends here, and thought it might be worth any nasty lectures on a woman's place if she could just see his lustful eyes widen with shock.

Stryke: Your character is much older than mine and probably had not met me at the orphanage. Therefore, there is NO way you would know was a magic user by sight. Percifeer makes a point of being an 'archer'. Looking like a magic user is one way to put a bullseye on your chest.

Ayrn: Great post. Your age does a heck of a lot to bring the group together. If you weren't power-gaming I'd like it even more .

Everyone else: I can't wait to get rollin'. This is looking like fun.

Jason was so flustered with this idiot Croaker, he turned his head to Jack first, sucking in a cold breath and pausing. After a couple of seconds he turned back to face croaker, exhaling and closing his eyes behind his glasses. If the situation weren't so obviously tense, one might have seen it as a sigh of relief.

Spiff stared at Croaker, whose mouth kept runnning despite the facts. Still, you had to give the boy credit. When Jack turns up dry on dough, suddenly he thinks he's gonna be able to weasle it out of the lowly fixer that Jack hired. That took some cahones. So far this boy had shown a lot of balls and no brain, so Spiff gave up on being logical, and ran with the 'all balls' approach.

'Buddy buddy buddy. I know that you're a douchebag. I'm sure everyone else here knows it too. You don't have to remind us of it at every turn." Spiff stretched his arms over his head and glanced at Firewind once, just to show he noticed the lazy bum hadn't done anything to stitch up the party. Turning back to Croaker, his smile was painfully stretching the ends of his face. His teeth shined in Croaker's face, reflecting the flourescent light of the room. Power moves were Spiff's thing, and it was time to put old Croaker boy in his place. The next few words were said in a surprisingly normal tone of voice. "Frack your greedy little hands. I don't have money to be tossing at you. I said I'd buy drinks not the ammo you frackin' wasted at the 's******e' we just left. I ain't your frackin' lapdog sidearm sally, so **** my *** about your frackin' munitions. My crew's been up all night saving your a***s, the least you could do is say thanks. You can call me a coward 'til you're blue in the face panzy patty, but that don't make it the truth. I ain't got time for your pissing matches at every turn. Face facts bi***y betty, shit's gotten rough and we've got to move past it."

Spiff's eyes shifted down behind his glasses to his phone's cabhailer. He was tempted to press it, but figured it highly possible jack could shoot him over something like that. He decided to see if he could play it off well enough not to need his own ride. He spoke again, sliding off the edge of the table where Merry Deth laid. Landing on the ground, his ankle reminded him of his fall and his face tensed up. "I'd be the first one to say 'Let's step outside and settle this with a nice 1,2,3, draw,' but unlike you, I got shot saving your little girlfriend here, so I'd appreciate a little respect." Spiff didn't specify whether 'your little girlfriend' was slang for Merry Deth or a reference to Peacekeeper because it didn't matter to him. As far as he could tell, this jack*** would've shot Merry Deth himself over a nasty comment about his unit. Either of them represented the value Spiff was getting at. He flipped open his phone and pulled up the picture he had taken at the hole while he continued talking, zooming in on the corpse lying on the pavement.

"Don't pretend that I need you little *********** to survive this mess. With the cash in my pocket I was easily able to hire the equivalent of the help I actually got in getting this girl out of the hole. What was it? 4 bullets and a knock-out drug? Everything else that brought this little girl to you was me, b***h. If you don't believe me I'll pop my clip out and hand it to you, and you can take a look at the bullet in my leg. In fact, while you're down there, you can frackin'**** ** **** too! 'Cause what the frack did you do b***h? You fired a rpg straight at my head right next to your girlfriend. You hired a frackin' media to cover the events. You apparently even got the cops involved earlier! And look at this!" Spiff raised the phone up to Croaker's face, Coyote's corpse filling the screen. "I leave one of my guys with you for five minutes and you get him shot. At least everyone that came with me is still standing here. And Firewind doesn't have a scratch on him!"

Spiff glanced at Preacher who looked to be in distinctly bad shape, and then turned his head back to Croaker. His lips were tense and, though he tried to smile, he couldn't. He felt his jaw flex and was quite certain his face was crimson with rage. I need to calm down. his thoughts raced over phrases in The Prince. Every one of them would imply that his statements here were unwise of a future ruler, but he was certain that, if Machiavelli were alive today, he would have done the same thing. When being loved and feared is not possible, it is better to be feared than loved...He was flipping chapters in his mind before he realized how little this crew was making rational decisions that would behoove him to pursue the tactics he knew best. Spiff pulled his phone out of Croaker's face, dialing his Lieutenant's number. He took in a deep breath and reminded himself of the one sentence that had done anything to shut this guy up all night.

"Now I've got no problem covering a meal tomorrow so that, even without getting paid, we don't go hungry. I can call my people and see about getting us a ride at a cheap price, but I can't pay for it. When Jack can't afford your damn munitions what the frack do you think I can do? Jack might be able to get us a decent price, but I ain't got the cash to be throwing around after you kill off my armed escort." Spiff paused, an idea floated into his mind and he wanted to savor it. "Alternatively, I might be able to find us some work that actually pays so we can get your guns and wheels, but I'm sure you'd find a reason to complain about the job or accuse me of being a coward if I did."

He looked down at the phone number on his phone and then back up at Croaker. "So the way I see it, you got two options." Spiff motioned at the crowd around him, "You can use the help that's been laid in front of you. I can do everything I can to keep us alive and keep Biotechnica off our scent. OR, you can shoot me, like you're so longing to do and kill off one of your allies in this. I'm not your enemy here, as much as you want me to be. I'm on your side, and I'd be just as ****** on my own as you." Spiff sighed and pressed send on his phone lifting it to his ear. "So what's it gonna be? Do I need to get a ride out of here in order to stay alive, or are you gonna learn that alienating your friends is a bad idea."

Subject: Percifeer has arrived

Percifeer was enjoying the walk back home so much that catching sight of the town was a bit of a downer for her. She enjoyed adventuring a great deal, and found the idea of stopping a bothersome bit of tie-down. Still, she was glad to see her family again. When she arrived at the gates, the guards mentioned citizenship papers, something she only vaguely recalled from her youth. She sighed.

"It's four Jesfa a day then?" She asked, reaching into the sack dangling at her side and pulling out a gold and 2 jesfa. She handed them to the guard. "Three days should be enough time. If I'm here longer than that, I'll surely have time to pay the rest." She knew that three days was far too long. She wanted to be gone tomorrow evening at the latest, but in the unlikely case she was tied up with Ormander, she wanted to have time to focus on that rather than worrying about silly fees.

She stretched her arms over her head and stepped into the villiage. The sights were relatively familiar, but what she noticed first was the smell. All the smells of her youth were here, and had been all this time. She smiled and dropped her arms to her sides, starting in the direction of the orphanage.

It hadn't changed much on the outside, the hand of Falloes shining brightly in the sun. But the inside sounded different. Combat...that was different. It must've been expanded. All training she remembered went on outside the orphanage. Ormander usually just cared for the children.

"Where's Mr. Galios?" she spoke, kneeling to be on the level with one of the children. When directed to his office, she turned and snuck to the door, peeking in at the old man who was much more worn than she remembered him. Another orphan had arrived already, it appeared, as there was someone else in the room who looked to be carrying a good deal of equipment also.

She jumped out into the doorway with outstretched arms and shouted "Ormander!" in her most delighted voice. She rushed over to hug him and give him a kiss on the cheek.

As Seigfried stared dumbfounded into the dark hallway, Tram asked him questions. "Can you see that? The hallway seems to take a turn about sixty feet down." The gnome was shifting about, obviously eager to move in.

Meanwhile, the other two members of the part decided to leap across into the doorway. The maenid leapt across and only barely landed on the ledge. Upon doing so, he realized how hard it must have been for the rest of the party, because it was slick and curved and he lost his balance and nearly fell in. He didn't fall though, because Riaharan leapt as well, and he landed past the ledge, safely in the hallway. He grabbed his comrade and pulled him in behind him.

The elf could see down the hallway as well, though it looked to get darker further down. Here, he could see that at the edge of his vision the hallway took a right. He couldn't tell much more than that. The decision of where to go was up to the group.

Trust me, I know exactly how Croaker is. I read the game 5 times over from start to finish before the inn crashed way back when. I even read it through one time before joining. I remember a rockerboy who never got played, do you?

Anyway, I understand where you're coming from. Spiff, again, is trying to be as reasonable as possible to Croaker, but delaying the meet WILL get him killed. That means it will get Bullseye killed too. That is NOT going to happen. As a player you have to understand the logic here. As a player, I find ways to have my character work with the group instead of against it.

For example, Spiff might have reacted to your forgetting his earlier statement and then arguing with him about the Wild Things by asking Jack to shoot you. He didn't. Instead, I spent two days mulling over ways to make it so that our group could still work together. Give me a little slack here! I know you're a good enough player to do that kind of stuff too.
