Topic: Realms of Twilight - A Journey Begins
Subject: Quarlin

Quarlin went to his room and packed for the mission, for he had no questions to ask, at least none he felt Vorlance would be willing and/or able to answer. He stripped himself of the fancy clothing Vorlance had provided and put on his exploration clothing. He packed up the rest of his few belongings, stopping only to open the jingling pouch to see the money and placed the gold back in the pouch. He donned his back pack and kept, for the time being, the pouch in hand as he met up with the others.

"I don't know of any small towns or settlements in the area that this gold can be spent in, and we won't be very welcome in Illuria or any of the Imperially controlled cities. Actually on the reverse end, we may be all too welcome if there is a price on our heads. Cults are small and slow moving groups, for their one and only strength is numbers not wealth. Something tells me that if all fails, we might be able to buy information from these cultists."

With that he jingles the coins twice with feigned tosses to punctuate his point, then puts the gold away in his pack. He then turns to Vorlance saying, "If things are as dire as you let on, we better get moving. I do, however remember you mentioning the offer of some historical reading material for those of us that are interested in that sort of thing. Well, I would like anything you have on the twilight dragon or historical texts written about or in that time period. That is all I ask."

(OOC: Whatever reading material that is given to Quarlin, he will read 3 chapters each night the group stop and camp on their way the the mountain entrance of the cult.)

Ody, if a card is tapped, that means its being used. kinda like the card is the pipe that carries the frothnslosh (the mana) to the "TAP". When you "tap" a card you pay the mana cost to fuel the abilities of the tapped card.

meta-game knowledge tells me that i know that it was the Dragon's eye stone that Carrius absorbed into himself and when it exploded, it killed him. the energy from it turned the undead shadows into the Umbral race.

What i want to know is, what is the official story that the average Umbral believes, and would there be any connection made in the mind of Quarlin about the Stone that Vorlance spoke of?

"Sir", a servant interrupted Quarlin's study,"The mid-day meal is about to begin. If you wish to wash up please do so. The master will be out on the terrace shortly, I Believe."

Quarlin gives the servant a beleaguered smirk and SLAPS the book shut causing a cloud of dust to jet into the air, consequently causing both the servant and himself to cough a bit and says, "Yes, might as well end this exercise in futility and wash myself of this book dust."

"Sorry you didn't find what you were looking for, sir. Well, when ever you are ready...."

Quarlin did a splash and dry job of washing his hands and headed to the terrace to take his former seat and said,"Well, that was about a waste of time! All I found out is that dragons lived long ago and a great disaster killed all but one off. The info surrounding the disaster or the time period it took place in were very vague. It would seem that Lord Master Vorlance isn't only keeping verbal information from us, but the literary good stuff as well. He had to learn his history from somewhere."

Only as he finished that last sentence, did he notice that not only he wasn't paying close enough attention, but Vorlance was already present and just heard every thing he said. Feeling a bit sheepish, he took his seat as directed.

Once all were seated Vorlance began to speak.

"Greetings once again my friends. Please have a seat and the meal will begin shortly."

As you all sit down he nods to the butler who was standing off to the side near one of the doors. "I trust you have all come to a decision?"

Quarlin was the first to speak to this question,"It would seem as if I have some pretty heavy stakes in this already, plus the chance to learn some seriously ancient history is a little too tempting for me not to accept."

Topic: Realms of Twilight - A Journey Begins
Subject: Quarlin Speaks

"Well, for someone who says so much, he told us very little, didn't he? If for no other reason than to solve ancient mysteries, I'm half tempted to work with Vorlance."

Quarlin helps himself to another helping of fruit juice, and gauges the reaction of the companions, new and old, to see what they may have to add. Then, he begins to speak again after a moment of thought.

"I had done much researching during the latter portion of my adolescence when strange changes, other than the norm for my race, began to manifest. Powers that few of my kind have, and they had to study many tomes, whereas the same abilities just came naturally to me."

"The most ancient of secrets in my race's history are guarded rather closely, and as my research progressed,I found I had to delve deeper into our historical chronicles, until finally, I was made to stop. Reasons where sited like 'This area of the library is reserved for the emperor's academically accredited scholars and researchers.' or 'Many of the books, tomes, and chronicles must be rewritten, reconditioned, or preserved before they can be made available to the public.'

Now, you may ask, 'Why am I telling you this?' Because, I have a theory based on a legend or myth of the world's history that I came across."

"A few journals I've read mention a mysterious race of beings, though the name of the race was either omitted or left out for some reason, that is believed to be the first race created by the gods. It is said that they are vain and greedy, and the authors of the journals judge them as evil for what it is they are believed to be guilty of. It is said that this race brought about the first major disaster on this world, the eternal eclipse. It was meant to wipe out all other beings created after them. Now, the one responsible for another of this world's disasters is about to be awakened. I can't help but think that anyone that wishes to unleash this beast, also wishes for the extermination of life. However there is very little evidence to support my theory other than the reported nature of the race written about in the journals."

Quarlin wipes his mouth and rises from his seat and says,"I think that I will avail myself of a book from Vorlance's library. For him to have knowledge of dragons, there must be a book on them somewhere. I will return before our next meeting, if you will excuse me."

(ooc:What Quarlin is looking for in the library, is books and/or articles on ancient past disasters and when dragons, specifically the twilight dragon, were involved in ANY way.)

History as you know from my character's skills and background workup, is one of my character's interests. In my studies to work out a hypothesis as to what is causing my changes, would I have (or could I have) found anything on the Sai-Heth?

As far as metagaming is concerned, I know that they are the race that eclipsed the sun. Seeing as that happened before the twilight dragon came close to destroying the world, that info would be much older. However, as far as the majority know, dragons don't exist, but the Sai-Heth, how much does history say about them.

My character's Theory, if you will allow him to have it, is the Sai-heth may be the ones trying to exterminate the "vermin" by loosing the Dragon to finish the job he started so long ago.

This theory could be introduced by Quarlin to the party as a "myth or legend" he read during his research.

If you could communicate and/or compromise with me, my character would most likely be more apt to work with or for Vorlance.

Subject: Quarlin

"Forgive my rudeness, Milady...Raina?, I am called Quarlin."

He looked in the direction of the Master with a look of distrust, then looked back to Raina with an unsure grin and finished with,"Heretic of the Undercity and apparently an adventurer for hire."

With that he helped himself to a few of the honey glazed pastries and a couple glasses of fruit juices in order to try each one. He wanted, as a small show of rebellion, to show the same table manners as the half orc, but couldn't seem to bring himself to do as good of a job of it. Once all further introductions were made Quarlin looks Vorlance in the eye and says,

"Forgive me, if you will, for being so bold, but without any further run around and smoke and mirrors, maybe we can get down to brass tax, and learn why we had to come here, and what must be done. I confess to a certain curiosity as to whether or not this issue even really has much to do with me. I've been going through some strange changes, physically, that I don't quite understand and therefore have mysteries of my own to solve. So one of the first things you can do is assure us that we are not being set up, because that's what this feels like, a set up."

With that, he sits back in his chair and finishes his last pastry and washes it down with juice.

"...and please pretend to possess some level of civility...", Quarlin squeaked out in mockery of the servant as soon as he was sure the guy was out of earshot.

Sure, the comment wasn't meant for him, but for the half-orc. Why be that way, in any case?

"Hopefully, the Master has better manners than the help."

Waiting patiently for breakfast to begin and to finally get some answers on what this was all about, he took in the view, serene but unimpressive as it was, he needed something to take his mind of the apparent height they were at. Being born and raised underground, high places were not his forte.

His wish for a distraction came in the form of a new comer to the table. He never saw her before. She didn't look happy. With the exception of the accommodations, were any of us truly happy being manipulated, and led into something we know nothing about?

Looking at the new arrival, Quarlin tries to strike up a conversation," We are apparently puppets that got our strings pulled, so what's your story?"

hey pyro chill out man. You know that virtual table top game ive been working on? Still waiting on players. Sometimes its just a real life situation holding things up. Real life affects us all at times. I do think Eol is right. You should try another style or maybe try to get 2012 started back up again. If you need help, I will HELP you but not do it for you.

I also want to thank Eol for taking the time to type out praise, encouragement, and suggestions for Pyro. I "Applaud" your effort!

Quarlin was sitting up in his bed legs crossed and enjoying the warmth of the air and the bed. A knocking at the door roused him to action. Tying the robe he wore to hide his semi-nakedness, he cracks the door to peek out and identify the knocker. It was one of the servants.

"I have brought appropriate attire for you. If you will give me your worn traveling outfit, and I will have it washed. I can draw you a hot bath if you would like, to refresh and awaken yourself before breaking your fast."

Quarlin opened the door the rest of the way to let the man in, saying,"Please do a hot bath would be excellent. So, am I to assume that the master will be his true self this time and not in a disguise as I believe I've seen before?"

The servant laid the noble looking black clothing out on the bed, and went about drawing the bath as requested before answering back,"Sir, I assure you, I'm not all that sure I know what you are referring to. I have no idea how he conducts himself when he is out on business, but here in his home, you cannot expect him to be anything but himself as he always is around us, his servants." He finished his work and gave Quarlin an incredulous quirky little smile and shaking his head as if to say 'such a strange question from a stranger'.

After the servant left Quarlin to himself and his bath, Quarlin began to disrobe and bathe. The water was great, as he sniffed at the perfumed bath oil soaps. He found a scent that pleased him, a fragrance that reminded him of the Honey Fire lichen, a kind of sweet smelling glowing fungus found in most cavernous settings but most plentiful in the out skirts of the Undercity. When it was the wet season on the over-land, the Honey Fire would soak up and engorge itself with water and would drip sweet nectar into pools of standing fresh water. The nectar, undiluted, was poisonous, but in the fresh water was safe to drink and as sweet as Honey.

As he soaked, he pondered the liquid, as it faintly seemed to glow while in the bottle. He was taught the diluted nectar was safe to drink when the water it fell in began to glow as evenly as the Honey Fire it came from. This bottle contained oil, not water.

Quarlin got out of the bath, closed the curtains and put out all light in the privy. Now he would see. He reentered the bath tub and poured the bath oil on himself and in the water. As soon as it hit his wet body and the water, the room took on a faint illumination from the glow in the water, and he felt as if he found a piece of home.

He bathed in the darkness for a while longer, maybe a bit longer than he was supposed to. He got dressed and went down to meet with his companions and await the master. This breakfast, after the dinner the evening before, was something he was looking forward to.
