As the watches go throughout the night, very little was noticed in the contrast of pitch black of the forest and the uncharacteristic light of night outside of the forest caused by the fractal zone in the heavens, or the Abyss, depending how one looks at it. Very little sound was made besides the whispering of the strange pale twins.

Just as easily as the twin's whispered conversation started, with a devil's wind it ended just as quickly.

I need something from jozan1 before i can make rolls and post in story form. Bear with me though for some of your action posts are confusing at best. A few examples:

Shades, you posted in game that you got down off of your pony, now you are getting back on just because you don't have a safe place to tie it up? I'd , if i was that concerned for Talon, just get off the pony, let it walk where it will and find it after the fight. the pony knows who butters its bread, itll come back if it hasn't been killed.

Brianna, you can't catch someone flatfooted if they are already aware of you. The five gnolls you are engaged with know of your presence and have seen you camoflage yourself. Now, just like with the spell Invisibility , if your hide and move silently check both succeed, you can get the drop on them, and I'll even give you a +2 circumstance bonus to your attack roll. flat footed only works in a surprise round and the attacker is undetectable. Teleport is the same way, one could teleport from one spot to just behind an enemy and get the drop on him, but it doesn't necessarily mean the enemy is flat footed.

strike, where is the celestial monkey found in the books? Id like to see its stats. How many rounds are you planning ahead here? you can only cast one spell a round unless you have the metamagic feat Quickened spell.

Were they distracted by the dancing lights at all?

The dancing lights may not have been noticed at all, could have been mistaken as sun light filtering through the trees as the sun sets in the west (assuming there was something alive close by that would have even given a crap, lol).

Should I still post about summoning the monkey or was that taken into account already, or am I going to have to wait until Patrick's initiative turn to do that?

No you don't have to wait for your initiative, the monkey was summoned, it acts on your initiative.

Also, the squares are 10x10, correct? If so, can you let us know which 5ft squares they are in. That will help with placement of us or any spells/abilities we might want to use.

To make it easy, you can occupy a square with an enemy, seeing how the squares represent 10 square feet. the count is the same. (example: you cast a spell that has a range of 50' plus 5' per caster lvl. the enemy is 60 feet away, no cover, if counting spaces were necesary in this case, just count 6 squares. and to make it easier than that, say the enemy were 105' away. With you being lvl 10 you would have a total range of 100'. as long as the enemy is in the 10' square your range lands in you can still "reach" and hit the target.) your base speed is 30' so you can move a max of 3 squares. The coodinates are to communicate WHERE you move and WHERE RANGED shot are headed at which enemy. I hope all this was of some help to you.

Bruno is going to need to tie down his pony. Anywhere he could do so?

Tie the pony to the back of the wagon, or pick a tree preferably on the right side of the wagon (possibility of bad guys in the woods to the left). Sorry to say there really isn't any relatively safe place to tie up a pony or horse here.

Also, I cannot connect to the webpage to see the new map... any ideas on how I can fix this? I tired with both google chrome and Internet Explorer.

The link does work, i tested it myself, and the other players have seen it. However I might be able to actually put it here for a time. The maps will change over time as events happen and ill have to edit, delete and repost maps as we go along.

did we see any of the gnolls that made the rustling sound in the bushes? i was thinking of using seeking ray because it ignores everything but total cover but i would have had to have seen at least a tiny bit of them for it.

As far as your characters know (Thanks to failed spot checks all around) either the noises were caused by the gnolls you now face, or they were caused by a devil wind or a small forest animal. None of you saw anything that resembled a gnoll in cover.

If we didn't Garrik is going to wait to attack the first gnoll that pops out from the left using spring attack to hit it then back off out of its melee range. That would be his target for Dodge too. He would channel shocking grasp and use the corrosive swords ability along with it. If none show up the first round the beginning of the his turn in the second round he fires a seeking ray at the group down the trail. Garrik doesn't want to leave Talon alone with the wagon so he stays by it if the gnolls from the side don't show up. He's pretty sure there is at least one over there.

thanks for reminding me, Talon is ready to fight too. I just need to roll init for him.

ENCOUNTER MAP

As you are all attentive to the brief rustling and shuffling of the bushes to your immediate left, some of you closer to the front of the wagon pick up on movement out of the corner of your eyes. Apparently, while you were distracted, five jackal-like creatures wielding javelins and battle axes, were trying to sneak up on you. They failed. So now what? You're staring at each other across at least a 50ft expanse of trail. Who makes the first move?

((OOC: Dont worry. ill roll inits for everyone and we keep those inits throughout the fight(unless otherwise instructed). post me what you do IN THE Q&A THREAD and any contingencies and Ill do the rolls and post the results in story form here. So are we having fun yet? ))

You don't need the Track feat (which uses the survival skill) to FIND tracks that match or resemble what Talon described. Just the search skill. You can find them, you just can't tell which set belong to which creature or even be sure that the creature that seems to have made the print, actually made it, or how new or old the prints are. You'll just know that they are there and the chance exists that whatever made the tracks are still there in the forest somewhere.

Also you are roughly 10 miles out of the kingdom. Talon said he "wanted to make the foot hills of Mt. harauk my sunset."
Well, you are pretty close, but he wants to get clear of this marker his friend told him of, first before camping and resting.

Here is a link
to the map showing where you are and here is a magnification showing more detail of your location. Talon knows about the trails and spaces in the forest to a degree. They have been used as campsites by merchants before.

NOTE: THE "PREV - NEXT" BUTTONS ARE NOT TO BE USED. THERE ARE OTHER MAPS THAT I WILL SHOW AT THE TIME I DEEM NECESSARY. I will learn to use the links better in time, but until then, please don't spoil anything for yourselves or others. Thanks

Subject: too bad

Looks like the tone and circumstances are set for us to go on foot, and against us riding, unless dakarta or I can use our natural persuasiveness as Valshari to sweet talk the nobles into selling us horses at the normal price cause we're buying in bulk. lol

Too bad there is no such spell as "Greater Tenser's Floating Disk". We could buy one horse and have the horse pull the disk as we ride on it. The bumps and rough terrain wouldn't be effective then. All Im saying is that magic may be the answer to our travel woes but the answer hasn't presented itself to me yet.

With the crystal pyramid and outer wall and all, I edited my last post to reflect the knowledge we would have of the layout. You were right, it would not be the safest or wisest idea to gather and meet 1/2 a mile outside of that wall seeing how the wastes start just outside of it. "sitting ducks" mean anything to you all? lol

"Sure I'll take a glass, I'd like to make a toast", Sorgoth said as he raised his glass,"Rest assured, my friends, I have your back, and I'm honored to know, that you have mine! May the wind be at our backs, May we be fortune's fools, and may fate smile on our mission with success!"

He took a sip of his wine and then said,"Now that's done, I would like to make a few suggestions. First if we must make haste, we'll need horses, but they can always be killed or stolen so buy only what provisions you can store in your back packs.

Second, there is the chance, regardless of how remote that chance is, that we are not the only ones who know of the weapon. We may just be the only ones that know of its whereabouts. The point is that the enemy that box is meant for may have spies in town to see how ripe the time for attack is, and if we go about shopping at the same stores or shopping together, that would draw attention to us that we don't want. So I suggest that we split up to do our shopping at different merchants and stables.

If we need a wagon, I suggest all of us chip in for it and one of us can buy it when one gets his or her steed.

Most important of all we should meet no closer to town than just outside the border wall, not right at the exit of the crystal pyramid where we can all be seen leaving together. The more discretion we use, the better off we are."

With that he finishes his wine and signs a "Thank you" to his gracious host.

As far as Sorgoth understood, the team was to meet at Lauran's house after he retrieved the item to be transported. So that is where he went. After giving the door to Lauran's house the secret knock to identify who was at the door, Lauran opened his house to the fellow Valshari elf and welcomed him in.

As soon as the door was shut behind him, Sorgoth used Valshari Sign to say,"I assume you have it. Is there anything in the instructions against opening the box to find out what we are transporting? I'm very curious to find out what we are carrying."

He then looked around the well kept house and greeted his other comrades,"The down time has been good to you all. I hope it hasn't made any of you soft", he said with a toothy grin that contrasted with his dark face.

Sorgoth continued,"I've been thinking that this trip just might take more than five days to complete. It may take up to a week, who knows? Should we make preparations before we leave or hope that the road provides? An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, you know."

Suddenly Talon seemed a bit on the spooked side. He sat upright and in a hushed voice he says,"Yeah, it's a good idea at this point not to dwell on anything right now, but keeping your eyes peeled. I just recognized a marker I was told by one of me fellow merchants to keep on the look out for. This is the spot where the last merchant convoy was ambushed."

After making that statement, he quietly parks the wagon as far off the road as possible, gets down and says,"Keep your weapons at the ready. If any of you are any good at tracking, now's the time for it. If you've never tracked Gnolls, you are looking for a very large canine print, but only one pair per gnoll, for they are like jackals that stand on their hind legs."

Still in a hushed voice he says sort of as an after thought,"THIS is why I was quiet for so long. I figured there would time enough for talking, when we were off the road and safe and warm around a campfire."

There was a rustling in the bushes.

((DM says: Ok heres the deal, I need to know who stays with the wagon and Talon who is readying for battle with his duel punching daggers, to guard them, and I also need to know who to roll search checks for if any of you are tracking Gnoll prints or signs of gnoll activity. Remember, even if no gnolls are present, In character, it is important for Talon's piece of mind.))

I sent you my character stats, and a portrait. As for a backstory, its gonna be tough for the only thing I know of the K'urn is what you've described as their stereotypical appearance and the fact they parallel the Native Americans in our world. So were they pushed off of their land in the name of progress and civilization?

Also, Is there a reference I can use to get a wolf familiar?
Worshipers of Darm revere the wolf apparently, and it seems appropriate to have a wolf for a familiar in contrast to any other animal.

Subject: travel talk

The group had traveled silently for almost two hours before Garrik finally allowed curiosity get the better of him as he broke the quiet,"Say, Talon, do you think its far enough from town to tell us anything about the cold, cruel elf Priestess that we'll get to deal with again once we return? I honestly get a bad feeling from her and don't trust her, which is odd because usually I give elves the benefit of the doubt. I hope we can help out your boy when we get back by talking some sense into him to find a better employer. She doesn't seem the type to care about her underlings."

Talon seemed to be off in his own little world and barely heard Garrik, but he did hear the mention of the priestess. Roused from his own reverie he says,"Hmmm? Oh yes, you wanted to know yesterday afternoon if I knew anything interesting if not pertinent about her. Well sure, we're far enough by far from the spying, listening ears of Garthraike to converse on that subject."

His voice still rough and haggard sounding, he takes a labored breath and begins his story," About two and a half years ago, my son was inducted into the King's Guard, and thus beginning his illustrious career. When the King went off on his mission to the west, basically where you'll be heading in the next week, Im supposing, my son wanted to be one of the ones to go with him but Tomlin being a rookie and all the King didn't feel he was experienced enough yet and left him behind as a castle guard. Good thing too, for it is the consensus of the Kingdom that the King is dead, and word from around town is that you all are trying to investigate that, right?"

Garrik nodded his head.

"As far as the Priestess goes, she has been the King's most trusted adviser and right hand for the past 20 years since the Unification Wars. She was at first taken prisoner, when her tribe, a drow tribe at that, rebelled against the unification efforts of the kingdom, and the majority of the tribe were wiped out and scattered across the land. She was spared only because it appeared that she was only half drow and half elf, hence the white hair of the drow, but a copper toned skin. Her eyes give away her drow heritage though. It is said that she made a deal to serve him loyally for as long as she and he lived."

Talon took another breath, and allowed what was said to sink in, as he regrouped his thoughts on the subject. Things of this sort always seemed to have a way of blurring his memory to the point of losing his train of thought. He was an 85 year old man after all, though one wouldn't be able to tell right off without spending some time with him, being as spry as he was. The older man continued,"The King's mission was inspired by Jaspina's knowledge of King Borrif's sceptor know as the Hilt of Wondrous Blades.
King Borrif was King Mezneok's Father who was born in Leafhaven and became king after marrying King Takinov's daughter, Princess Slarvia. When King Takinov fell in battle with the Gothic Barbarian's of the Northwest Wood in the foot hills of the Harauk range, Boriff the son of an elven shaman chieftan, became the first elf to ever assume the Garthraik throne, unfortunately only after the Queen Slarvia died giving birth to twin boys. One of which was prince Mezneok. The other child, from what I've heard didn't survive. One was small and weak while Mezneok was one of the biggest babies born that year and it was just more than the queen could take. Now another rumor is that the other son lived and was given to the midwife who was barren and could not bear her mate a child. So is the hope for the Kingdom laid upon a rumor of a phantom king. Hoping against hope that the heir is still alive. Jaspina on the other hand, I'd bet my teeth and ears that SHE has ordered this investigation, hoping the king is found dead, so that, her being his Grand Vizier for so long, she should be next in line for the throne. You may be on a quest to learn the truth of the king's life or death, but I'm almost one hundred percent sure that it is an unspoken mandate that you try to find King Borrif's Sceptor so that she may have an uncontested coronation. So, on the whole, I don't believe that you and your group are in any danger from her, unless you try to put another King on the throne, or can find the King alive."

A look of concern washes over Talon's face as he realizes that the group that travels with him now could very well heading for the same destiny the King has faced before them, a destiny that fate somehow saved his only son from. He fell silent, maybe to give someone else a chance to speak. He takes another deep breath and slaps the reins on the backs of the horses.

I was hoping for some travel banter of some sort. Shades should be talking Talon's ear off during travel and game wise I haven't received near enough posts from brianna or Jozan1. I've got two from Strike but that was about the start of the journey but not the journey itself.

The way I'd like this to go is, each of you post, THEN I update with the rest stop. You all post your actions during the rest stop, then I update getting you all started again, and maybe along the way there will be one or two encounters (maybe more depending how everyone handles the ones I present).

Remember, it's at least a 5 day trip. Your characters wanted information, I would think they would talk it up to get conversation started. You don't really want to wait to camp to get the info and have it interrupted by an ambush do you?

Otherwise, I gather from the wording that we are together as a group on the breach of the start of the adventure. Lauran just had to pick up the "weapon" box thingy (lol) and we could be off now, or make further preps.

first of all, i vote that Steelight plays the summoner as an NPC.

Ok, now that's out of the way, should we prepare, or are we as ready as we'll ever be? On the one hand, this adventure appears to be sort of "Cloak and Dagger" so if we go about making preparations for a trip we may draw attention to ourselves, something we don't want.

On the other hand, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

So, should we travel as light as we can or load up? I know time is an issue so I figured Id ask the other players. I'll go with the consensus. Though I am excited to be a part of this I'll let someone have the honor of the first game post to set the tone.
