Subject: I just don't know anymore.

Ava has made up her mind to be angry with me, apparently.

But in my own defense, no where, and I do mean NO WHERE, in the role playing in the game thread did Bailash nor any of the PCs or NPCs make any mention of Lacey being a drowess.

I may have made a mistake, in retrospect, to even mention the Governor's knowledge of Lacey being a drowess in the Q&A. I didn't know it would blow up into this heated discussion.

How many times must I apologize, huh?

I'm sorry, Im sorry, Im sorry, and I am sorry for being human and making this HUGE mistake. Keep in mind however that the only place info like "Lacey is a drowess" matters is in game and no mention was made about it in game. Now instead of keeping the Q&A hot with this talk, why don't we continue the game?

Subject: Character Backgrounds

This message is for all of the group presently playing.

Apparently some of you have not Thoroughly read the introduction to the campaign. For if you did you would see the things that the governor knows, thinks he knows, and what is only a rumor to him which he wishes to check out.

One of the guards states, " I always wondered how you knew of so many people even when they don't know of you."

the governor then replies, " I have friends in both high and low places."

It's not being a mind reader, and its not the DM metagaming, but just an NPC having eyes and ears in all the right places (which by the way, is typical of rich politicians).

I requested character backgrounds from each of you for two reasons:

1. To test your role playing aptitude (which all of you passed exceptionally). It was this I was going to base my decision of whom to pick if I had more than 6 entries. By what I've seen so far, I believe if there where more than 6, I would still have picked all four of you.

2. To tailor, and customize the game to the group, to pull you all in and create a small amount of friction to throw in with wrapping your minds around the mission. It was not intended to be used against anyone. I expect great role playing from the group in the face of adversity. Thus far, I believe I've been getting it!

I just want each of you to know that I am not being a vindictive or conniving DM. As DM, I am the NPCs and Enemies in the game and I am Tiamat5774 when I PM you or post feedback in the Q&A. There is no, and will be no transference or confusion as to which is which. Just as you are role playing, so am I. I want to close this by saying, If I haven't said so already you are all doing great! If anyone in the group feels as though I've stepped on any toes or overstepped my boundaries, please accept my apology.

Subject: Actions I take.

After activating his shield ring and sending a volley of magic energies at the dragon, with hatred for the beast in his eyes he pulls two daggers from his chest pockets.

He just barely heard someone say, "Devon do what you can."
He then realizes that he was allowing his hate to control him and cloud his mind. He looks at his daggers and says to himself, "this is not me, anymore!" then replaces the daggers into his pockets. He focuses his thoughts on his next spell.

OOC:

1. he realizes he may not last long against the dragon if he goes within 10ft to use his daggers so he decides to use maximized Magic Missile at 4mp each round doing 25 damage each time.

2. I have presently 101 mp. repeat above spell until I'm spent or dragon dies.

Contingency: IF the dragon advances on me, or it becomes apparent to me that it will target me, I will cast FLY first, then Greater Invisibility.

Subject: A plausible explaination......

"Talking to the remaining guards he says as he writes, "The children mentioned seeing walking dead. My brother wrote to me before he died of a cleric of Eilistraee that he took under his wing. He said if she ever came into Leaphaven to take care of her. She could probably use the work."

You may recall this as an excerpt from the intro to the campaign. He hired her for her devotion to Eilistraee, and to keep his promise to take care of her and help her out when he can.

But, deep down, he is not only rich and powerful, he feels that only men should be in a position of power. He is a classic example of a male chauvinist pig!

He sees Xavier as childish, strange, and unrefined. Unfit for a leadership role.

He also envisioned the paladin as the leader of the group he has put together, so naturally he will show more favor for Chiron's plans and decisions than anyone else.

The good news is that, after giving directions to get to the house, he did basically give his blessings on following to each their own instincts on how to proceed with the mission.
So once you are free of him, it's up to each of you to agree on a course of action without the interference of the DM or Npc.

Ok, This is addressed to Armada. I honestly do not know whether or not I should allow a Dread Necromancer into the game. I feel it would create too much conflict and break the game and the story down to a point where the game might "Fizzle" out. I've already lost one PC that I could not please without gaining the disdain of the majority of the group, and I don't want to be put in that position again.

So, I'm putting this to a vote. All those in favor of having a Dread Necromancer in the party, signify your agreement. All of those opposed, show your declination. I will be the tie breaker in the event of a tie. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and participation.

Subject: Chiron speaks up.....

As the group follows Bailash to the anteroom as requested, Chiron addresses the Governor.

"That being the case good sir, I would hate to weaken the city's security any further. Besides, a lot can happen in a mile of travel, and if the ogres that attacked the first time have any sense at all, they will expect a return with greater numbers, and therefore set up an ambush. Running into trouble like that, under the present circumstances, might make having an escort only be a liability, to you and to us.
If it is all the same, maybe you could give us directions to this phenomenon, that is if the path isn't hard to follow."

The governor, turns with a warm expression on his face and says, "I'm glad someone understands the situation from my position. Now, as for directions, The path is very lightly wooded, more underbrush than anything else. After exiting the city gates, proceed north to northwest for three quarters of a mile and you will begin to see the glow of the house for yourself. How to proceed from there I will leave to your professional instincts."

Subject: Sorry

Bailash gives a sorrowful gaze as he responds to Chiron saying, "Would that I could afford you an extra guard, but that is the reason I have hired you. Perhaps I can send one with you to show you where this place is, though it's not even a mile out of the city gates, but it would allow you to question him on the way, not losing any time, but he must return to the city once you've been escorted to the site. I'm sorry, I truly am, but as the summons for hire letter stated, the city of Leaphaven cannot afford to weaken itself in security any further. It's the best I can do for you."

Bailash turns to walk back to the library entrance, but looks back to the chosen four and says, " If you have chosen the equipment you feel will best help you in this mission, would you follow me back to the anteroom where I might summon Cheffron? He is one of the guards that was sent with the constable the first time the house was visited."

As he waits for a response of any kind and for the armory to clear of people, he fingers a knothole in the wall, and once all have exited the secret room he presses the "knot" inward and the bookcase slides back into place concealing, once again, the armory.

Slowing the horse until it is safe to dismount, he jumps down and in draconic yells at the red dragon, " Why don't you pick on someone your own size, you overgrown lizard. I've got something for you!"

As Devon spoke he activated his shield ring, and to further get the dragon's attention, Devon let loose a deluge of magic missiles.

His anger and hatred towards dragons begins to show on his face. He draws two daggers and prepares to throw when he sees the red in its eyes.

(OOC: Spell magic missile, 1 mp used, 5 missles at 1d4+1 dam. each. I know that's a lot of actions so when its my initiative do each action in order, all I have is offensive fire spells with the exception of "charm" which I might use yet, later as a last resort. A note to all players, where my character comes from dragons are big and bad so Devon's hatred for dragons is relative.)

Subject: Diabolic Genesis:Origins of Evil- a PBP D&D Game

Now looking for two EXCELLENT role players to complete the party of four I now have to play in this campaign. If you like battling dragons this is the adventure for you.

What I need is a pure fighter and an arcane mage. PC's should also create a detailed character background story for the character you plan to use. Details I look for the most are:

Where your character grew up,
Note worthy battles (actions must be possible for characters),
Hardships, fears, likes and dislikes, eccentricities,
and an explanation of the origin of each while growing up.

Look for details for character creation in the Q&A forum.

NOTE: For PCs that wish to drop out quickly before I can arrange the character's demise, I will retain the right to continue using the character as an NPC until someone else can take over the character. This will help in continuity which is VERY important in the game.

PM character in plain text format, and character background to me for consideration. THANX

Deuclion is correct. I don't want to interfere in anyone's real life activity so, a post once a week is par for the course. If someone doesn't post within that time I will play that character in their absence and make the decisions for them (and I don't wanna hear any griping, lol). For all intents and purposes, the group will stay together and no one will be left behind (unless of course some one dies).

From now on, when in doubt, go ahead and post. I will contact you in no more than 3 days if I see something wrong by pm. You can edit your post to make it right and you don't necessarily have to rewrite the whole thing.

For those who don't understand spell levels and spell like abilities, the gold cap average is 3585 gp for any weapon, armor, or shield.

thats:
1650 gp for the most expensive armor listed
4000 gp for a +2 enhancement bonus
690 gp for the most expensive weapon listed
8000 gp for a +2 enhancement bonus on a weapon

14340/4 = 3585 gp average cap.

in response to Gboy's question on ammunition, the following count as one Weapon choice: A quiver of 20 arrows, A wooden case of 10 bolts, or a pouch of 10 sling bullets.

Devon was about to introduce himself, but barely got, "I'm" out before a red streak came whizzing by in a flurry.

"BRIANNA! Brianna, come quick. Nasty red dragon tried to eat my Precious. Bad Dragon. Precious is hurt. Hurry. I can't puff any more. Please hurry, bring black lady. Bring weapons, magic, healer, more weapons, and hurry."

The diminutive red creature calling for help now resolved itself into a miniature dragon itself as it circled around Brianna several times. .

"I am coming Flame," Brianna calls out, as she leaped up up from of her hunkered position near the pot and whistled for her horse.

"I don't know what is going on but I am going to find out. Lorae and any of the rest of you who feel up to it, Come on. It might be best to show up in force. It couldn’t be too large so we should be able to take care of it. Ready yourselves just in case."

Looking to the newcomer, Devon says, "Sorry Ma'am, Introductions will have to wait!" and with a wink and a cavalier smile he mounts his horse and rides off after Brianna. "Just like old times", he mused.

Bailash's expression softens towards Xavier, obviously sympathetic to his feelings for his sister and responds in a calm and sincere manner,

"I too believe she is too good to be treated the way she has been, especially when the civil war is not her fight. There is no need to make threats, good sir, I'm only telling you what's been reported to me. I WILL do everything in my power to have Camille safely delivered back to this city. You have my word, or my life will be forfeit to you, that your sister will be free and safe in my office or set up at the Nightshade Inn upon your return from the mission."

Taking the whole group into his scanning gaze he responds to their concerns of leaving quickly by saying, "It is well that you feel the need to leave quickly and I will not stop you from doing so. Just promise me that you will use the petty cash account to equip yourselves against any contingency. I do not wish harm to any of you. Chiron, I do believe you only repeated what I said when you said, 'Whatever is inside that house that scared the children so badly when it first appeared is starting to get out.' That is exactly what I believe, but I must also say that it is the counsel's and the majority of of the city's official's belief that the child is already dead. We have hope only for the sake of the child's mother. I promised I would do all that I can to find her son, which is why you are all here now. This is far more than a scouting mission. I believe the mandate of the letter states 'investigation and elimination of threats outside the city gates' meaning the house and its inhabitants."

The Governor drinks his last swallow of wine then stands and says, "Well I guess if you want to get equipped and set out as soon as possible, then let us visit my weapon room. Please follow me."

Governor Bailash Castor leads the group through a maze of corridors before stopping at a book case in the library. It seems as if he's going to select a volume of magic spells off of a high shelf. With his arm fully extended upward, he grasps at the book and tilts it back. The sounds of gears and cogs click and grind and the entire bookcase sinks far into the wall and slides to the right, almost completely concealing itself and revealing a new room.
Armors and weapons of all kinds, and from many past wars, his personally and those acquired as spoils, fill this room. Staffs, wands, many manners of armors made of all manner of materials, swords, maces, morning stars, shields, even slings, crossbows, short and longbows are present.

"Quite an impressive collection, don't you agree? You may choose one for each of you. Anything you like."

Subject: responses to each in turn.....

"Miss Lacey, I understand your eagerness to begin this mission, but, you must understand that two seasoned and very experienced guards died in the investigation. Even when hiring outsiders, they are treated with the same respect and dignity of anyone locally employed within or by the city. I would never send one of my men out half-cocked and I'll surely not send any of you out that way either. I want you fed, well rested, and supplied for this mission in 24 hours.
I want all of you at your best, not your half best."

Irgune stared, or was it glared, at the Governor as he spoke not saying anything.
"Intense fellow isn't he?", he thought inwardly to himself, "Almost as if he's taking it all in, taking notes on me and the companions I've chosen for him to work with. Curious fellow indeed. I'll have to keep my eye on him, just as he seems to be doing with me."

Just as Bailash was finishing a thought, he was jolted out of his concentration by an uncalled for display by Xavier.

"Yes, Xavier, I know who you are or at least of your reputation, and I know of your sister as well. It may please you, or displease you to know that your sister was my first choice for a magic user in this group, but unfortunately she is a bit indisposed at the moment and I have no real control or bargaining power to have her brought here."

Bailash glares at Xavier for his brazen behavior, and pauses a moment to allow what he said to sink in.

"When have you ever been paid for a job before it was finished? It's bad business, Xavier. What would stop you or anyone else for that matter of taking the money and run?
The only thing I can offer you, other than the one thousand gold pieces, a unique weapon of your choice from my armory, and this city's hospitality, is the location of your sister Camille, but that isn't going to happen unless you start exhibiting some self restraint and civil behavior. Blast it all! A half-orc barbarian would have shown more restraint than you!"

Bailash's demeanor softens a bit as he turns his attention back to Ardulace.

"Being as I assume you have accepted this mission, you are now in the employ of the city as officials, similar to constables and I wish for all of you to conduct yourselves as such. This means you have access to the petty cash account in which each of you are allotted five hundred gold pieces a month for job supplies such as healing accouterments, weapon and armor maintenance, and potions. I would never send a constable or guard on any mission without the ability to prepare himself."

"And as for you Xavier, you may recall that I mentioned a civil war to the north in Unther? The war's issues are basically on the perceived evils of magic. It is mage against non-mage and the clerics of both sides are caught in the middle. From what I understand your sister was traveling through a contested territory with a man dressed all in black and she was taken prisoner by the non-mages while her companion was executed. We believe she is being used as a bargaining chip, but the mages will not claim her as one of their number. No telling what they might do with her if she is not claimed soon. The armies and militia of Leaphaven are there mainly to quell the fighting and to help both sides reach a truce, then negotiate for peace. I can send one of my couriers with orders to attempt a rescue mission of Camille, or even for one of the Generals to negotiate for her release, But that is the best I can offer to you, on your promise to conduct yourself in a professional manner during this mission. Are we agreed? Oh, and by the way my exuberant friend, being OFFERED one thousand gold and a possible fifteen hundred gold is NOT being offered 'nothing yet'. Keep that in mind as well."

Subject: Leaphaven & the meeting with Gov. Castor

One by One, the couriers, as they arrived, led their charges to the Governor's Mansion and, within, to his large office. The last one to show up was Xavier, for he traveled on foot without the aid or guidance of a courier.

The office sprawled out in front of the would-be adventuring party, and it was impressive indeed. The space was twice of what one would find in the best and most expensive room at any inn. The air was perfumed with an exotic incense and decorated richly with fine tapestries and the eight chairs that surrounded a large glossy varnished rosewood table were deeply cushioned and leather upholstered.

Governor Castor gestures to the seats in a circular motion, giving each in turn their cue to sit down and make themselves comfortable.

"Please, sit and make yourselves at home in my home. Simon?"

A man appears, dressed in the traditional coat and tails accouterments suited for servants and butlers.

"Yes, Governor, you require something?"

"Yes, Simon, please bring in a bottle of my finest wine and a variety of refreshments for my guests and I for this meeting may take a while."

Simon clicks his heels together stiffly and bows saying, "Very good, Sir!" and leaves with a sense of urgency to carry out the order.

"Now, as we wait for refreshments, maybe I should explain the situation and why I felt it necessary to request the presence of you fine ladies and", as he scans slowly over the gathered party, he stops at the Half-orc, Irgune, and clears his throat roughly and quickly spits out, "gentlemen" , now looking Irgune directly in the eyes says, "We can be gentlemen about these proceedings, now, can't we? Good form, That's what I like. As the letter stated, for reasons of lack of city security, I cannot afford to send anymore of my guards or constables to investigate the disturbance outside the city gates. We have already had two fatalities as a result of an ogre ambush during a reconnaissance mission. Also what was not mentioned in the letter was that our cities armies and militia are dealing with a disturbance caused by a civil war in one of our kingdom's territories in Unther to the north, which has left this city in a compromising and weak state. Now, this disturbance shows up, a child comes up missing, and I'm sitting here with my hands tied and mud on my face in the eyes of the community."

As Bailash waits for the group to take this all in, Simon enters with a roller cart of different exotic foods, mostly decoratively cut fruits and vegtables, but also biscuits and multiple varieties of meat pates. Simon places a fine crystal wine flute in front of each, the women first then the men, and fills their glass then does the same for Bailash.

"Thank you, Simon. You can leave the bottle, that will be all."

Simon bows submissively to Bailash and leaves the room. Bailash waits for the doors to click completely shut before resuming speaking.

"So, here is the details of the situation. It has decidedly been described as a ethereally glowing house that fades into and out of existence from time to time. It is not consistent with its coming and going. This house scared a group of children, who were the first witnesses to the phenomenon, by flashing suddenly into existence around them and then, just as suddenly disappearing, apparently taking a little boy with it. The children report seeing undead within the house. It definitely contains horrors to scare children and dangers able to kill seasoned guards. And now, understandably, I've now got a city full of panicked citizens. I am prepared to pay each of you one thousand gold pieces when you've investigated and neutralized any threats to the city and hopefully gathered information as to the origins of this phenomenon. I will also be willing to pay an extra five hundred gold to each of you if you are able to return the child alive and well from the house. I also have an impressively sized collection of weapons, masterwork in quality and some even have special abilities. If you agree to go on this mission, I will gladly give each of you one of your choice to help you in this great undertaking. You will have today and tonight to prepare yourselves for the mission and I have already set each of you up the finest rooms at the Nightshade Inn. Now, as I'm sure you have many, now would be a good time for questions, after which I shall show you to my weapons room."
