How about this?
John is finishing up a gig doing something techie for another ship that has docked. He overhears a couple of dock workers passing by make mention of a help wanted ad they saw on the Cortex about a freighter pilot being needed. It was vague enough as far as skills required, destinations unknown, etc. One of the dock workers jokes with the other about some reason he'd take the job; how it couldn't be all that hard punching in autopilot destinations, sitting back with some entertainment, and enjoying the peace and quiet (maybe an ex-wife is hounding him, or something). The conversation could drift away as they are caught up in the crowd indicating that the try-outs we're happening
now and he couldn't fly nothin' larger than a hover mule anyway.
Then John is kinda behind the gun, and when he arrives, maybe he is set further behind when he see's Wolf struggling with the external dock computer diagnostics system concerning the grav dampner. For some unknown reason Roc's computer system isn't recognizing the dampner's chip API feed, and Febris has resorted to relying on the free diagnostics computer owned by the city (a bit like trying to use AOL to enter the Matrix). So, John helps get things on track there and Wolf has to convince Wyatt to allow John to try out because he's missed the auditions.
You could still have John perform his cool thing with the whatchamacallit during his test, and he could have already gotten in good with Fenris due to his insight into computer systems.
Just what's floated to the surface as I've percolated on the subject. Use it, bastardized it, ignore it...no skin off my back.
