The screams of wererats consumed in the conflagration filled the cavern just as fully as the filthy smell of their charred flesh. Impassive elven eyes took in the macabre scene cooly as flame and steel killed the beasts. Despite their losses the rats continued their march forward with a hunger for blood glowing in their eyes. Lun gripped her black staff tightly and made ready. If any of the beasts closed upon her they would learn first hand of power held in that staff.

As light swallowed the darkness an horde of squealing wererats hurdled toward them with hunger lighting their beady eyes. It seemed that an endless sea of the vermin swam towards them. The priestess hissed and readied herself to send forth a swarm of her own. Yet as she began to turn her mind on the task the chanting of another called to her.

Odyson, the animistic shaman, intoned to the wild divine and unleashed a torrent of flame down from the heavens.

"Let flame be joined by flame," Lun spoke in a cool voice that rang clear.

Her voice then rose in an incarnation of her own. From the mysteries she invoked the light of the sun and the heat of passion. She whispered their secrets and bound them into a golden sheet of flame. Heat and light flashed outward, rushing to meet the cavern walls.

((OOC: casts Wall of Fire from cavern wall to cavern wall. Attempting to separate the wererats from one another))

As breath gave flight to the final words of her prayer, Lun felt the darkness rise around her. Like a cancer it spread through every crack and crevice. It's vastness whirled about with hunger, threatening to consume her very being. Just as quickly as she had summoned the spell so did she dismiss it.

Shaking away the last of the effects, the priestess moved to join the others. There was talk of a wererat ambush laying wait in the darkness. Not two hours had passed since they left elven lands and already they faced a second trial.

Sterling herself for the battle ahead Lun began to whisper another prayer, one that was sure to be more useful than the last.

With golden eyes the elven priestess stared into the black depths of the cave. None of their efforts thus far had illuminated their way, despite delving with wit and magic alike. They were faced with the unknown, perhaps even the unfathomable. She found herself filled with a calm resolute. To face the unknown was to behold mystery, and that was a sacred charge.

Stepping forward Lun began to chant softly, her words lilting, unintelligible, beyond meaning. She drew forth ancient magic from the mysteries letting the divine unknown guide her awareness and find what lay hidden in the dark.

With every step forward there is a great leap back. At the moment that particular adage rang with a particularly searing truth. They had bled and yet there were no closer to their goal, they had not even set foot in the wretched cave. It would seem the capricious Lady of Chaos was testing them.

"Agreed," a gravely dwarven bass bellowed. "We best be getting on. I doubt they'll wait on us to arrive before they start their little celebration. And, for Galen's sake, I don't want to be late."

With that the dour dwarf stalked toward the entrance of the tomb. In a moment of wonder, Lun found herself agreeing with a dwarf. A rare smile curved the priestess's lips as she glided toward certain doom. Her steps took her to Jarenion, and seeing the hurting mage Lun lay a smooth hand on his chest.

A soft wordless sound left her lips and seemed to swirl around the pair of elves echoing with the promise of the unknown. Cool, tingling vibrations flowed from the priestess into Jarenion to fade bruises and close cuts.

"It is just a simple healing," Lun spoke in a matter of fact tone. "There will be plenty of opportunity for death this day. Come my brother, let us face this darkness side by side."

((OOC: Cure Light on Jarenion. I know FIn is wounded, but thought I saw it mentioned that she's healing herself.))

"Run!"

It was a single word, but it struck like a spear. As if of one mind, all heads snapped towards the crumbling threshold. With burning golden eyes the priestess glared at the tunnel entrance as she sprung into action. Once again, magic lighted her feet and bore her into the air. Reaching out a hand to Arien, she sped away from the fel place to join the others. All the while Lun's lips moved in silent prayer to the Moonlit Mystery.

Lun knew a moment of celebration, but it died in her heart as those she thought saved burst into a miasma of black leeches. The sight of such an atrocity against her people filled the priestess with rage and she longed to release a divine fury upon the vile tentacles. Retribution would have to wait.

The torrent of leeches had fallen upon her companions and many were gravely wounded. It was only by the grace of the goddess that she managed to escape such a fate herself.

Scanning the area, Lun's amber gaze fell on Arien. The knight lay unmoving at the bottom of a ravine. Of them all his need was the greatest.

There was no hesitation, the silver priestess made her descent to Arien's side. True healing could not begin with his body covered in the leeches. Taking care not to let the creatures bite find her, Lun began the task of removed the wretched vermin from the knight.

((OOC: using healing proficiency to remove leeches. I'm assuming that's all she can do in a round. Next action will be Cure Serious on Arien))

Her movement through the air met an abrupt stop as the glistening leeches struck out. Like spiders they waited until she and the knight drew near, and then hurled the dying elves toward them all. Relieved of their former prey, the tentacles reached out hungrily and slashed through the air with terrifying speed.

Sped by magical flight, Lun kept her distance from the writhing leeches as she spun through the air towards the rapidly descending elves. There was no way to save them all, but by the grace of the Goddess she would guide as many as she could to safety.

((OOC: Flying and trying to avoid the tentacles. Attempting to catch the falling elves. If possible she will guide as many as she can into Jarenion's web.))

Sehanine ran a coppery finger along the rim of her cup, filled thankfully this morning with tea. It had a musty taste that hinted it had aged beyond its potency, but it blessedly lacked the burning bite of spirits. It was far too early of an hour for the ale-soaked swamp hag to make an appearance. Continuing to trace the perimeter of the crude ceramic cup, the fey regarded Tristan as he spun his tale.

Her finger stopped its orbit at the mention of Jaron's supposed death glare. There was a chance it was nothing more than local superstition, but magic had a way of settling in the most unlikely of places. Sehanine racked her mind thinking through all sorts of powerful death magics, but nothing seemed a more likely possibility than another. The potential for this be real was there, and not knowing left a strange hollow feeling in her belly.

Deciding the strange hollowness was unpleasant, Sehanine took a sip of tea in hopes of banishing it. For some unfathomable reason the hollowness persisted. An irritated pout painted across the elf's face as she unsuccessfully tried to ignore the feeling and focus on the threads of intrigue that might be spun. Instead all she could focus on was getting away

Tristan and Calopee it seemed had a similar thought in mind, as each made a rather strong case for moving on. Their words made good sense, and in truth there was little of consequence to keep her here. Saving a few farmers from a low grade crime lord had little appeal, and in truth she was beginning to grow bored. Let the folk of Schell deal with this themselves.

Let the folk of Schell deal with this themselves.

A sudden wave of excitement rushed in to banish the very unwanted hollowness. These farmers had proven ruthless when pushed. It would take little more than gentle suggestion to send them off after Jaron. Give them each a sword and the proper words of motivation, and this problem would be solved without dirtying a single favored hand. Such a thing would be gloriously entertaining to watch.

Faerie fire burning in her violet eyes, Sehanine faced each of her companions, "You are both right, of course, it is perhaps best that we become a more..." a sly smile punctuated her pause and she ran a hand through her silver curls "...cohesive collective before facing unknown death glares. Yet we need not leave them to their fates." Shifting a meaningful glance toward Malachi and Relos the enchantress continued, "We have begun to train them to defend themselves. Let us give them the means and encouragement to deal with these threats themselves. Imagine how empowered they will feel then."

"A prayer for their spirits, dear sister."

Lun returned Jarenion's glance with her own golden gaze. This was an awful place to have come to an end, and by all reasoning that end had been awful indeed. Forcing herself to look into the macabre scene, she began to whisper a soft prayer to the Daughter of the Night Skies. It was the purview of the Goddess to guide souls on the path of eternity, and she prayed it would be a peaceful passage. The fallen hunters had earned that right.

"They are in the hands of the Moonlit Mystery now. May she guide our fallen brothers and sisters home." Lun spoke softly as she laid a hand on the mage's shoulder.

Twisted looks of horror had painted across all gathered, in truth, horror was the only reasonable reaction to what lay before them. Still, they had come to this place with purpose, and they could let nothing stand in their way. The cost of that was too high. It seemed the others were of a similar mind, as each began delving into the mysteries of what lay before them.

It was the raven haired shaman's words that brought all to halt, "The hunters are still alive, barely. They have creatures sucking out their life. Little ones on face and hand. Not rope either, more leaches. We should save them."

"They are alive?"

Sparrow's words of dismay echoed her own inner monologue. It was a hard thing to believe, but worse, it spoke of the depths of this park power. She did not want to think on why the hunters had been left to such a fate.

The half-elf continued, "If they live we need to save them or help them pass to the other side if we cannot save them. Either way we need to do it quickly or the leeches will decide their fate, and I am sure it will not be a kind one.

"Quite," Jarenion muttered with his focus on the hanging elves, "We cannot, in good conscience leave them as they are... most certainly not in this place."

"Agreed," Lun's words were hollow as she let her focus move from Jarenion's violet gaze to the dying forms of her people. "There is no other course but to aid them."

Discussion began and it was soon decided that she and Arien would take flight to free Yolanda's hunters, and with the grace of the Goddess return life to them all. Silent prayers breathed from her lips as she and the knight rose up from the earth to meet the trapped hunters. It had begun.

On getting the hunters down, Lun has Winged Boots that allow her to fly. Would that be a good, mana free option? Or shall we just do the feather fall bit?

Beard Master, Jaron's rumored death glare seems like something Sehanine might have some general knowledge of. Would Knowledge(Arcana) or Spellcraft bring anything useful to mind?

The smoothed stone floor was cold beneath her bare feet as Lun Telumendil glided toward the center of the ancient temple. Mists billowed around her skyclad form to wrap her completely in their cool embrace. Pale moonlight refracted through the thickening haze of mist that at once revealed and hid the path to the sacred pools. Had the priestess not walked this path near every night for the past century, the oscillating mists sent would have sent her falling to her death. Survival of this scared path was the final test for a High Priestess of the Cult of Mysteries, and it would be a trial undertaken again each night she spent on the temple grounds. Some saw this spoke of the cruelty of the Dark Sisterhood, but in truth it was a devotion to the unknown that drew them forward night after night.

Tonight Lun was joined by many of her sisters as they each made their way to the sacred pools deep within the ancient temple of stone, water, and moonlight. Thirteen steeps brought the silver haired priestess before a reflecting pool, and she slowly descended to sit on the stone floor and gaze into its watery depths. Time seemed to still as she let her golden eyes seek the vision held beneath the waters still surface. There she sat, still and barely breathing until the vision came to her.

The vision came, such as it was, but it was far from what she had sought. There, rippling on the waters' surface with the evanescent visage of Yolana the Eternal, her Queen. A voice at once ancient and youthful spoke directly into her mind.

"Help me Lun Telumendil, for the kingdom of our people and perhaps that of all mankind is in grave danger. I know you have aided my son Galenthanus many times in the past. Please come to me now in my time of need."

The grey elf priestess did not hesitate. Quickly rising, Lun let her feet guide her from the temple depths. Once again she would leave the ecstatic vision quests of a priestess to aid the world beyond.

******

"I will not waste time with pleasantries..."

It seemed The Faerie Queen began her tale the very moment her feet touched the library floor. It was a gruesome telling indeed, made all the more foreboding by Yolanda's frenetic pace. Such haste was a thing known among the shorter lived peoples of Oerth and was rarely seen among the elves. For Her Fey Majesty to move with such urgency spoke more loudly than her words ever could. This was a dire need.

One by one, heroes whom she had stood beside alongside Galenthanus stepped forward to pledge sword and spell in aid of a dear friend. Catching the violet eyes of the lone mage among them, Lun nodded knowingly. Bonds of fraternity had pulled each of them forward, but beyond that, this was a threat against her people and it could not be ignored.

Gripping her magical black staff, Lun Telumendil stepped forward silently to join the others. A quick tap of the staff and the nodding of her head was the only answer she need give. The people had called in need and she would answer.

The snap of mortal bones seemed to echo through Sehanine's head as she felt the weight of gold in her lap. As the days unfolded, these country bumpkins were becoming more and more ruthless. Like cord stretched out too taught, they were nigh ready to snap and release all their impotent rage. With a little direction that fury could be channeled into something quite productive. It would take nothing more than a careful hand and a gentle push. A sly smile crept across Sehanine's ageless face as plots and schemes danced gleefully through her mind. She suddenly found herself quite pleased they had settled in this little hovel. A faery could find endless entertainment in such a place...

Violet eyes alight with faery fire, Sehanine turned her attention to her fellow "heros" and their next quest. Tristan was right they did have so much to discuss. Returning the bearded man's smile with a coy grin of her own, Sehanine fixed him with a gaze that promised mischief far beyond the matter at hand.

"Yes, let us eat. While we do, you can regale us with tales of all your travels yesterday."

the "incentive program" sounds like a good idea to me. think it's a good group accountability thing that will help to keep things moving along. we're all in it for the game, but this might help keep all on track.

as to the next plan of attack, we'll have to see what develops within the group. breakfast and discussion for sure. moral conflict, most definitely.

Since it looks like there will at least be a mage and a priest of some kind, I am toying with two options.

Priest with the prophet kit found in the Priest Handbook. Not a fan of the plate mail wearing holier than thou cleric, so will use the guidelines in the Priest Handbook and PM that for approval.

Also looking at the Witch kit found in the Wizard's Handbook. Could add an interesting dynamic...

Would you allow either of these concepts? Honestly, would be fine going either route to make sure we have a balanced group.
