Subject: Pike

To say the journey over the past few days had been grating was a gross understatement. Xana was surprised that the band of altruistic fools had not joined hands with the ferals to sing hymns of hope over the whole trek. Their optimism was sickening. Worst of all, she had been forced to smile along with them lest her ruse be broken. In this world survival depended on community and she was reminded daily of that loathsome truth.

Her attempts at drawing more tales of stars out of the feral lovers had proved ineffectual. A thread of magic would have loosened their tongues, but that was not an option. She needed to get one of them alone. Much of the journey had been spent in conversation with the clerics. Their differences could not be greater, but they understood one another. If there was any chance of influencing the course of events, it would be with them.

Dust swirled around them in the high noon heat as they approached the great polished stone wall and the town of Pike. Xana let her gaze trace along the polished surface. Odd for it to have been kept so pristine in these desolate times. Was this all the citizens had to hold onto?

When the call came down from the wall, Xana looked to the clerical pair to make the introductions. If the Pikesmen welcomed any among them, it would be the clerics and their water.

Subject: I don't remember that

Gossamer robes swirled around the witch as she glided through the empty skies riding on currents of magic. It was hers to command and it flowed to her will. She was a keeper of the mysteries, and from her will came dreams. Reaching ever higher, she looked to the sun and blissfully let its warmth caress her dark skin. It was the time of truth and she wielded its light.

Elven eyes met elven eyes as the sisters gazed upon each other; one light, the other dark. Night and day. Sun and moon. A single tear walked down her cheek as the doors locked before her. It was done. She spared not a final glance and took to the skies again, leaving them all behind. Let the others bask in glory, she would forever stand apart...

Morrígu shook her head as the strange vision cleared. Flight. She had been flying. Even here, kneeling on stone, she could feel the open rush beneath. And the sun. She had faced the sun and it had not burned. Riddles and tricks, riddles and tricks.

Standing, the dark elven girl made her way to the metal rubble captivating the others. Such a strange thing to have been left behind for so long...

Her eyes widened as the great bug-man sent magic of his own into one of the blades, changing the darkened rust to shining steel. Strange, she hadn't felt an magical currents, but there was not but magic that could make such a change. Setting her eyes upon Klik she giggled.

"What fun! What fun! Do it again pretty please?" Morrígu paused for too long a moment to take in the giant insect. There was an all too knowing flash in her eyes before childhood innocence returned.

"What silly men left all their toys here? Why'd they lock up the shiny lady?"

Great news on the level up. Working on the char sheet update.

Sub class is interesting. I think I understand: new abilities are gained as if first level, but the character and class level would be 4? Considering a Bard or an Oracle. But we shall see.

Morrígu looked from the tower and then over to the silly men, blinking as she switched back and forth. After a coughing fit brought on by a mouthful of ash, that tower was proving ever more attractive. The whole place itched with corruption, but there would be no ash and no sun.

No nasty sun.

The thought of another moment spent beneath that glowing globe of horror was enough to make her shriek obscenities into the dark. Any promise of escape was tantalizing. That her light loving escorts actually wanted to keep on in the dark was a midnight blessed miracle. She wouldn't be wasting such an opportunity, not crafty Morrígu.

"Yes! YES! To the tower we go go go!"

Subject: Wretched Letters

Iara sifted through the letters with a look of disgust painted across her face. Every word darkened her glower. Sensing the danger in her mood, the pernicious fey around were, for a blessed moment, quiet. A respite from their antics would have been welcome, but with the severity of the moment it did little to ease her mind.

Already having read through the pile twice, the faerie turned her dark eyes to pierce the writing for a third reading. At first it had seemed to be little more than banal criminal correspondence. The writer of the letters referred to himself only as "Speaker" and represented the interests of some clandestine organization referred to as the Black Hand. Speaker demanded the delivery of a host of reagents; sulfur, quicksilver, nightshade, darkoil, silverbark sap, the blood of an angel... the list continued on ad infinitum. Following delays in delivery, Speaker began to threaten the Crimson Fist by withdrawing support of their activities and other such similar actions. It was all dreadfully predictable.

"Give me this or I'll kill you. I'm tired of waiting, give it to me now or you will suffer. Oh yes, you will suffer."

It was full of the bravado typical of small minded men, and it was terribly boring. Had it not been for the final letter, Iara would have dismissed it all as inconsequential mortal blather. Holding that wretched page she read the horrid words once again.

Saltuk,

The Masters grow tired of your failures and excuses. You have 48 hours to deliver the materials we need or we will move forward with our plans and you will face the reckoning along with everyone else. The plan moves forward two days after the start of Autumn. Tuldoroc will be the first to fall to our reckoning, and we are not above taking you down with the city.

Do not fail us again,
Speaker

Iara hissed. This was not the discord she was looking for; it rang of sieges, austerity, and war. She had no interest in any of that. Given time she might be able to ferret out the source and stop it, but time was decidedly in short supply. Another curse left her lips as a polished stoneware cup flew across the room.

**********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

With the time to reconvene upon them, Iara walked up to the three men wearing a coy smile. Having delayed her departure a few extra moments, she was the last to arrive and she rather liked the idea of the others waiting on her, even if only for a moment. That levity quickly died and she shot them all a blisteringly serious glare.

"We have a serious problem," Iara snapped producing the roll of letters. "The gauntlet will crash in two days time."

Maintaining the severity of her glare, Iara detailed every bit of what she had learned from the letters adding it a bit of flair here and there just to drive the point home. The flame of truth guided her, making the whole bit one of her better performances. At the very core of it all, Iara truly wanted to stop the fall of Tuldoroc. Her reasons might be self serving, but the ends were the same.

With proper severity set in them all, Iara set her sights on the city guard and stalked off in search of Sigurd Crassus. It must have been quite the sight, four eclectic citizens side by side stomping their way to the office of the captain of the guard. Iara kept silent as Crassus poked through the pile of bands and then counted out their reward.

"You have done us all a great service, thank you, and please go enjoy the festival with your earnings."

"There work here is far from done," Iara spoke with her dark eyes burning, "it is very far from over."

Producing the letters, the faerie lay the final note upon the desk. "We have a serious problem and little time to deal with it."

**********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Exhaling softly in the quiet after the exchange with Crassus, she regarded the others. Had she found a new, rag tag tribe? Dare she enjoy companionship?

Smiling Iara nodded. "Yes, why not? And we have an urgent choice before us. Thwart an unknown war or go and get gone. Either way, we will need supplies and information."

((OOC: Depending on what is decided, Iara will try and find info in the underworld. Not sure how the rest of the conversation with Crassus went, so that will affect things. Also, Iara is looking for a Wand of Magic Missile and a Scroll of Entangle. I'd like her to replace the current spell in her ring of spell knowledge with Entangle.))

Have fun and much luck.

Seems where all a little slow moving right now. But as long as we don't run out of steam we're good. I'm going to try for a post this weekend. This semester is contractual renewal for me, so I'll be sporadically inundated until December. BUT. I. WILL. POST.

There is definitely some important information in the letters. I am working on a post where Iara will reveal this to you, in her own way (but you'll have the info). Just give me another day or so to pull it together!

Sorry about delays, I'm undergoing contractual renewall this semester, so a bit inundated. Is it December yet?

Topic: Iron Age Q/A
Subject: Reasonable makes sense

That all makes sense with bags of holding, etc. I'll think about it spacially rather than by weight.

Yes, cold iron overcomes Fey DR. Iara would certainly be all for destroying the weapons. At this point she hasn't revealed that her Fey nature is anything more than that of any other elf, but I'd imagine an all too beautiful woman is a bit suspicious anyway. So we destroy the iron weapons?

As to items, here are my thoughts:

WEALTH TO DIVIDE
274 gold coins
250 silver pieces

TURN IN FOR BOUNTY
2 Crimson Sashes
5 Crimson Armbands

KEEP:
6 potions of Cure Light Wounds
2 potions of Bull's Strength
3 potions of Hide From Animals
1 potion of Invisibility
1 potion of Cure Moderate Wounds
2 oil of Magic Weapon
2 flasks of Alchemist's Fire
2 flasks of Holy Water
4 flasks of lantern oil
Bundle of Letters (Iara will want to hold onto herself)

ITEMS TO REVIEW CLOSER AND SELL IF NO REASON TO KEEP
1 polished chalice fashioned from a darkly colored wood
1 silver bowl with engravings of lions
1 silver chalice with dragon carvings
1 beautiful gold and silver hand mirror
1 silver mask
2 Wooden Holy Symbols of Pharasma

SELL
Masterwork Sickle
3 suits of Masterwork Studded Leather Armor
4 Masterwork Hand Axes
2 Masterwork Heavy Crossbows
29 assorted precious stones of varying value
Fancy Dress
Masterwork Artisan's Tools (Tailoring)
Assorted rolls of cloth
1 Masterwork Battleaxe
Assorted trade goods
7 bottles of Wine

DESTROY
2 Cold-Iron Daggers

LEAVE BEHIND
1 Hand Crossbow
1 Rapier
2 Breastplates
2 Heavy Wooden Shields
2 Heavy Crossbows
2 Long Swords
2 Whetstones
4 Tindertwigs
1 Healer's Kit with 4 uses remaining
98 crossbow bolts

If any of you want to keep some of the masterwork weapons, armor, etc. Just say so, we can sell the rest. I think we should just divide the healing potions evening. The other potions/oils can be divided better by who can get the most use from them.

I'd like to take a little time to study the letters and the more specific items before selling them. See if we can find any connections. Let's purchase a scroll of Comprehend Languages. Iara can use that to decipher the letters. She can even transcribe them and then we turn the originals into the guard.

Once we know the total wealth from items sold, we should just divide evenly. Shield, when I know that, I will draw up a magic item wishlist.

Can we fast forward back to town? Feel like we're just getting stuck sifting through the loot.

So then does that mean a bag of holding has an essentially limitless capacity? Just curious how this all works. Obviously if something is too big to even fit in the bag it won't work, but if we aren't looking at weight then a bag of holding would have serious capacity. Iara has a minor bag of holding, so just curious how this all would work.

Can we can an inventory so we can divy up? I say we try and sell anything we're not going to use. Would like to keep the letters and decipher.

Would we be able to purchase wands and scrolls in the city? Considering it's a big city with a magic district and all.

Shall we just head back to town and take it from there?

Ring of the Grasping Grave.

Aura faint necromancy; CL 1st
Slot ring
Price 2,000 gp;

The wearer of this ring can make a melee touch attack against an undead creature no more than one size category larger than himself, cutting off that creature from undying energy. The wearer never suffers any ill effects that might normally occur from coming into physical contact with an undead creature touched in this way. On a successful hit, the undead cannot be healed or aided by the effects of negative energy for 1d4 rounds. During this duration, positive energy affects the undead creature normally.

Subject: Pack up and Go

Iara crouched down as they sifted through the Crimson Fist holdings. There was little to learn from what they found; a dress, coin and gems, finely crafted weapons, and the everyday stuff of life. It was no surprise that an anarchist band would have a room dedicated to violent interrogation. Their only real discovery had been the letters, which none among them could decipher. Still, the faery held these tight in her hand. If she could not read them herself, she would find magics to do it for her. This had become personal. Two among them had held weapons forged of dreaded iron, and she was determined to uncover all there was to know of the Crimson Fist.

Her dark eyes moved from the illegible letters to take in the skull ring. Necromantic magic radiated from the wretched thing. Iara hated the undead and all who traded in the magics of death, even those magics used to fight such abominations. With a wave of her hand she sent a trickle of fey magic to lift the ring up and spin it as it floated before their eyes.

"This is the only item of magic we've found in their cottage. It will give the one who wears it the power to sunder the undead with a touch. It might prove useful to one of you? Or we might sell it?" Iara let her gaze move over the three men. "We should make our way back to the city. From there we can decide the next course."

Iara let her gaze remain on her three companions, never letting her grasp on the letters loosen.

Subject: Keep on GOING!

Definitely not fizzling. We may have lost one but there are still three of us. I really want to keep exploring Iara. Might be a little slow, but I'm here.

As to next steps, I say we take with us anything of value we can carry. Dress, masterwork weapons, etc. I don't think we'll be able to come back and nab the rest of the loot - so we should make things really difficult with what we leave behind.

In terms of the letters and the dress. Iara is not the most law abiding honest person, so returning any of this to the proper owner is not a concern. Using the dress as a tool for more information would be something she'd do. As to the letters, I think we should keep them until we know what they say. We can buy a scroll of comprehend languages and have Iara use it to read the letters. We should transcribe them if we decide to turn them in.

Let's see what happens with the letters and getting pay from the guards before going monster hunting.

My brain is too fried to post now, but I will this weekend. More soon.

Subject: To Pilsen we go

Slamming the car door sent vibrations running up her arm. It was an oddly pleasurable sensation and part of yearned to do it again. That was a dangerous. Not the slamming of the door, but the desire. The call for pleasure. That yearning. She was ancient, an immortal whose life had already spanned many lifetimes, but still, part of her remained ruled by desire. It was the great weakness of all faeries. Desire was her weapon, and yet, she was bound to its call. Even the slamming of a door summoned carnal yearning.

Penelope sighed. There was no time for such distractions, but denying her nature was proving ever more difficult. The years in hiding had left her with little desire to deny herself anything, and that was dangerous. Threats remained even if the world changed. She could not die and nor could what hunted her. Running a hand through her raven curls, Penelope sighed again. It all had been her doing. Her own arrogance had brought her to this point. The impulsive faerie had learned caution, and now, despite all her careful motions the web of secrecy was unraveling.

Raising her eyes to meet Alejandro's, she gestured to the dilapidated building behind them. It was clean, but the economic realities that gripped the city had brought the house into a never-ending state of disrepair. Life undocumented did not leave her many options. Any complaints about her accommodations weren't quite fair. It hadn't taken much to convince the balding man who called the building home to grant her the attic apartment free of rent. Flirtation and a touch of compulsion won her a set of keys. With their unspoken agreement she ignored his less than legal activities, and he pretended she didn't exist. A better arrangement would have been hard to find. Necessity had brought her to Pilsen, but in truth she rather liked the area. Here, among the Mexican immigrants and Hispanic people she blended in. They shared a tongue and Penelope walked among them seen but invisible.

A few quick steps brought them to her front door, and after a moment of fumbling with keys and locks, Penelope and the detective were climbing the creaking steps to her apartment. Each step released a groan from the old stair, an almost erotic but painful symphony announcing their arrival. She would have cursed, but one did not complain about what one didn't pay for.

"Welcome to the palace," Penelope hummed as they approached her attic door.

Stopping a few feet in front of the portal, she let her fey senses take in the place. There was still an echo of hidden magic, impotent with its threads unraveled, but there nonetheless. She traced long the edges of the building, finding all much as she left it.

"This is were I found the medallion and the little warded gift around it. What do you make of it?"
