Subject: Soronuume

Soronuume watched as the companions walked into the town. It had been sometime since she had left the wild for civilization, and she had hoped it would be longer. The wild places of the world were alive, and she felt free within them. Buildings of stone stifled the life rhythms of the land so greatly that she felt hollow inside. Yet she had pledged to accompany them, to help defeat some great evil. She would endure what she had to.

Turning to her side she knelt beside Xu and placed a hand on the great cat's forehead. The panther understood she could not follow but even so she let out a low growl. Soronuume sighed, they had rarely been apart since they met and it pained her to leave Xu behind.

"We shall see one another soon my friend."

The panther sniffed and ran off into the wild. She knew Xu would remain close, and she hoped their separation would be brief.

Standing the wood elf followed the others into the town. She left Thunderclap with the other horses and entered the guard house. Inside the air was stale and she already longed to be back out in the open air, she desperately hoped they did not want to stay the night in some other awful building in the town. Soronuume accepted the peace bonds in silence, human customs were strange indeed.

Seluumiel nodded to the governor as she bid her farewells and made her way out of the building. She asked one of the guards for directions to the Nightshade Inn and continued through the town in silence. Townsfolk hustled in the streets around her and she found herself weaving through the crowds of humans.

She soon found herself before the inn and quickly entered the building grateful to be away from the frenetic crowds. Once inside she made her way to the front desk and greeted the innkeeper.

"Well met, I am Seluumiel Ithil'Luume. I am in the employ of Governor Castor Bailash, he informed me that there would be accomodations here."

The man nodded, "Yes my lady, your rooms are up this way. If you will follow me."

Seluumiel followed behind the man as he led her up through the building. The interiors grew more opulent as they climbed the stairways. At the top floor the innkeeper turned and stopped in front of a large wooden door. He handed her a key and smiled.

"Here you are my lady."

"Thank you my friend," the moon elf smiled her reply as she pressed a gold coin in the innkeeper's palm. "An associate of mine is staying here tonight. She is a half elf named Ardulace, if you could find her and tell her I would like to speak with her it would be greatly appreciated."

The man smiled, nodded, and headed back down the stairwell. She watched him depart before entering her quarters. The rooms were large and complete with the balcony, as promised.

Leaving her bag at the foot of the bed she stepped out onto the balcony. Warm breezes caressed her and tossed wisps of silver hair about. Seluumiel closed her eyes and breathed deeply enjoying the quiet respite. She stood there for awhile just breathing in silence. There had been no time for meditation and contemplation since her arrival to this human settlement, and she suspected this journey would provide little chance for reverie.

Nearly an hour passed before she walked back into the room. As Seluumiel stepped back into the room she pulled the magical weave around herself. Tiny tendrils of magic washed away the days grime from her body and clothes. Freshened she ran a hand through her hair as she sat at the foot of the bed. Reaching into her bag she produces the two books she had acquired that day. Seluumiel opened the book of Draconology and began her night of study.

"Actually my dear, I was not kidding when I said I had set all of you up in the best rooms the Inn had to offer. All the rooms on the top floor are sound proof and have and yours has a balcony."

Seluumiel cocked her head to the side at the man's reply. My dear. She was unaccustomed to being addressed as such, and the man's patronizing air was beginning to irk her. Nevertheless she smiled and touched the governor's arm.

"Thank you Bailash, if there is nothing further for us to discuss here I will take my leave for the evening."

Soronuume regarded the flame haired woman for a moment. Insidious evils had threatened The People throughout their time on Toril. This new evil was no different. She had dedicated her life to the preservation of the elven people and on this day she would continue to do so.

"You're story is not so strange as it seems, my people have tales of many worlds. If some great evil threatens our world and you oppose it then let me travel with you."

Rising from the table Ardulace bowed to the Governor. “Please do not think me ungracious or unappreciative of thy hospitality, Your Lordship, but I have wounds from this morning’s encounter that require my attention.”

Turning to Seluumiel, she retrieves her sword and bow, “Many thanks, Seluumiel, thy support is much appreciated.” She replaces her sword on her belt, and keeps her bow in hand. To the moon elf and the others, she says “I shall see thee all at the Nightshade Inn this evening, where I am sure we will have much to discuss.”

Seluumiel smiled "I shall see you there tonight."

The moon elf sipped her wine as she watched the drowess depart. She would have offered Ardulace healing earlier but she had been too lost in her own thoughts to notice the other woman's injuries. Would the Seldarine grant healing to a dark elf, even one who served Eilistraee? She pressed a finger to her lips as she pondered the thought.

Seluumiel returned her attention to Bailash and handed him the "Book of Unwritten Chronicles." He took a moment to read the passage before looking up from the book

"That's interesting", Bailash said. "All those who have agreed to take up the mission, their words have been recorded."

He slides the open book back to her.

Taking the book Seluumiel reads the passage over again. 'All those who have agreed to take up the mission, their words have been recorded.' She smiled, the book's magic had begun to take hold.

The moon elf looked up to the governor as she replied. "The tome is of a magical nature." She pauses and places both books in her bag. "I will share any correlations I discover tomorrow."

Seluumiel lifts her glass, "It seems the others are taking their leave. If there is nothing further you wish to discuss I shall make my way to the Nightshade Inn and begin my study." She takes a sip of the wine and returns the cup to the table, "Tell me Bailash, would there be a quiet area nearby the inn with a full view of the night sky?"

She stands facing the governor, awaiting his reply.

As Seluumiel and Ardulace finished their telling of the events at the house Bailash widened his eyes with dire fear and jumped out of his chair.

"Please stay here and enjoy your meal, and excuse me. I must go to my library and see if my worst fears are being realized. I'll be back with a book that may shed some light on the matter."

Fifteen minutes later, he rushes back with a thick tome titled "Dragonology" and sets it down in front of Seluumiel and points to a picture and passage.

"I can only hope I'm wrong, but it seems the passage in your book is refering to an avatar of, or Tiamat herself, the Queen of Evil dragonkind. If so we are in grave danger. However, It could be a cult following Tiamat. She usually does not take an active part in total destruction of something as small as a town. According to my book, she works from behind the scenes using her minions and followers in cults, sometimes even avatars and aspects. It would seem that this is just the beginning. Tomorrow one of my hopefuls will be here. I feel I must strengthen your numbers before you are sent out again. Hopefully Camille will be willing to join the group."

Seluumiel leans forward and places a hand on the open book as her sapphire eyes trace the words on the pages before her. A most grave matter indeed. Too much had been aligned before them to be mere coincidence. Her goddess never spoke directly, but rather cloaked her messages in signs and abstractions. Much was obscured, but Seluumiel was certain that the Daughter of the Night Skies had drawn her here.

The moon elf looks up to Bailash as her addresses them all as one, "As the book says, Are such adventurers present and ready to undertake this task?”

Seluumiel stood to face the man and responded, "The will of Sehanine Moonbow has brought me here. I too shall undertake this task." She pauses a moment to trace her hand along the tome of Draconology, "If it pleases you Bailash I will take these tomes and study them tonight."

Seluumiel followed the others into the house. She moved in silence as Bailash exchanged his pleasantries. The man seemed more interested in leering over Satya than dealing with the matters at hand.

"We can have this discussion over dinner if you will join us in the dining room." Bailash Castor extended the invitation to Xavier even as he turned his attention back to his newest, and very attractive, guest. "So, Satya, tell me about yourself. You have a look about you that is unfamiliar to me. You are definitely human but look tribal in appearance. How close am I to the mark?"

"Before we can sit down to dinner, Governor," said Chiron, though the host was engrossed with Satya's tale of her past and not paying attention, "There's a pink elephant that must be dealt with."

Turning to squarely face Lacey, Chiron holds out the flask he'd been cradling. "This elixir forces the individual who drinks it to speak nothing but the truth for about ten minutes. It also compels the subject to answer any questions put to her in that time. I've used it before, in criminal interrogations, as it provides more reliable results without actually causing any harm to the person being questioned." He paused a moment after finishing his explanation of the potion's effects. I need to ask that you drink it."

Seluumiel sighed and shook her head, the paladin was not going to let this go. The moon elf moved forward gracefully to face Chiron, "I see you do not trust my judgement. That is your choice. We have far more important matters to discuss, assuage your curiosities afterwards if you must."

She moved to address the rest of the group, sapphire eyes focusing on Bailash, "We have returned from the phantom house with the child and returned him to his to his mother. The house has disappeared from the landscape as if it never was, but I believe we have only seen the beginning."

Seluumiel reached into her bag producing a book bound in black leather and inlaid with gold lettering, holding the book up she continues. "We found this in the entry room of the house. It is a magical book, and it tells of a great evil."

Pausing for a moment she opens the book and begins to read from it aloud,

"All others have failed and I was the last. My spirit is bound here for my time is past. Unspeakable evil lies behind each door. Take care you don’t end up like others before. Five colors, five heads is all I know of your fate. If you must know more, ask the guardian of the gate. To what I have written you must take heed and I will record your actions, your words and your deeds. For in you must go. There’s no way to turn back. Defeat your greatest foe before he attacks. Are such adventurers present and ready to undertake this task?”

Seluumiel closes the book and looks up to the others, "We have a most grave matter on our hands. Within the house Lacey encountered a black dragon. She can tell you more of this than I, but I do know it spoke of its master. I believe the this master and the evil the book speaks may well be fully and wholly the same. This is a most grave matter indeed."

She falls silent and looks to Ardulace waiting for the woman to step in.

Seluumiel continued the rest of the way in silence. She remained near Ardulace, glancing in the woman's direction from time to time. Never in her life would she have imagined herself aligned with one of the drow, yet here she stood ready to speak for her should the need arise. That need very well might. Chiron had been exceedingly hostile since the drow's heritage was revealed. She could not fault him that hostility, though his refusal to accept that the woman was not a black hearted Lolth worshipping spider was complicating matters greatly. His hostilities would have to be dealt with as the came, there were far more pressing matters that plagued her mind. Grave danger stood on the horizon, unknown and waiting.

The return to Leaphaven proved uneventful, and the silence had left Ardulace's words echoing in her head. Whatever danger lay beyond the house had been only the beginning, of that she was certain.

They soon arrived at the town gates to see a young woman pacing frantically. On seeing her the young boy jumped down from the large mare and ran excitedly to her.

"MOM! MOM! I'M HOME!"

John's excited cries filled the air. Seluumiel watched the two embrace and part of her stirred. She had been taken from her parents care at a young age and despite more than a century having past the memory of that separation still burned. The moon elf allowed herself a respite from her preoccupations as she watched the reunion. Mother and son embraced. The woman embraced each of them in turn , tears streaming down her face. The uninvited contact was strange to her but the moon elf smiles to the woman regardless.

Seluumiel watches in silence as the men go off on their own. She had no issue with letting them deal with their own matters, there was much that needed to be discussed and their absence might only facilitate that.

The three women stood alone in silence for a moment until Satya produced a sealed letter asking to whom the seal belonged.

"Indeed, 'tis the very twin of the missive I myself received from His Lordship. To the Governor's then. Just as well, I have developed a powerful thirst and he keeps a fine cellar."

Seluumiel turned to face Ardulace as she spoke and nodded.

"Yes let us, we have much to discuss."

Seluumiel stopped dead as Ardulace spoke and the full gravity of what was washed over her. She raised out her hands before reaching out to touch the other woman's shoulder.

She responded to Ardulace in the drow tongue, a gesture of good faith.

"T'yin jal zhah 'zil Usstan treemmou. L'voiry udos muth zhah natha faerl voiry, ol della d'natha zhennu verin. Nau seig'tarn vel'bol l'retiah iklnig xal tlu nindolUsstan zhaun; l'voiry, l'maelthra, lu'l'jabbuk ph'jal nat'raeth."

Thanks for the drow translator.

Celediel sent me this link for an elvish translator.

I'm checking it out now, but from what I can tell the RDI dictionary is much more extensive. If anybody has any other resources that would be helpful let me know. I'll let you all know what I find.

The boy stands on his own and says to Seluumiel, "My name is Johnathon Miles Karris. You can call me John." John then takes notice of the exchange between Lacey and Chiron. "Doesn't the man like the other pretty woman. Why are they arguing?"

The moon elf smiled at the boy, "It is complicated John, do not worry yourself with it."

Seluumiel looked back watching the altercation between human and drow. Her own reactions to the revelation of the drowess had been near violent, more so than any of the others she knew the cruelty and evil the dark elves were capable of. Yet a moment of thought had stayed her hand, and Ardulace had proved herself to not be one of Lolth's. The moon elf closed her eyes a moment recalling her brief discussion with Ardulace.

"You speak soundly," the moon elf paused a moment and smirked, "Do you kill spiders?"

"At every opportunity", Ardulace all but whispered in reply.

At every opportunity. The words had been barely audible, but she had heard them and they proved her to be truly out of the Spider Queen's webs. Killing spider's, even speaking of killing them was blasphemy to Lolth. On hearing her words even the most mild devotee would have erupted in blind fury, Ardulace had not. At every opportunity. Seluumiel opened her eyes to watch the scene between the three escalate further. This was not the time. The moon elf stood as Satya left Chiron and Ardulace to their argument.

On reaching Seluumiel and John the exotic human leaned down to the boy "Would you like to go home and see your mother? I am sure that she is missing you very much." Satya looked at the others then said, "This can wait."

Seluumiel nodded as the human woman began to lead the boy back to Leaphaven. She then turned her attentions fully to the dark elf and the paladin, this was going to stop now. Moving quickly to the two she lays a hand on Chiron's armored shoulder. Their rages seemed to have quelled themselves, but likely they would erupt again.

"Calm yourself Chiron Po," Seluumiel moved to face him as she spoke. "She is not of the Spider Queen. Let elves deal with elves. Go to Satya and John."

She had been careful not to condescend but her tone brooked no argument. With an unreadable serenity the moon elf looked up to the man before turning to face the drowess.

Taking a step closer to Ardulace she once again addressed her in elvish. "Lava sen, ron na'a nessa ar'hoorea. Lye anta tess i'seere ie'ilya estelar, amin gorga tanya lye caele ere'ele'e i'yesta en tanya fea opele."

Seluumiel waits for a moment before following the others, she looks back for the other woman to follow. Her suspicions of something greater at large were proving true, and they would likely need the talents of all.

Seluumiel watched the drow closely. Her life had brought her into only a brief contact with the dark cousins of her people, but like any of the island of elves Seluumiel had been taught much of the drow. She did not believe the woman before her was a servant of the Spider Queen, likely she would have long been dead were Ardulace a priestess of Lolth - the Spider Queen dictated the eradication of all surface elves. Ardulace has proved herself to possess clerical power, and even the mildest of Lolth's clergy were fanatic zealots. Were she one of Lolth's the woman would have been unable to speak Eilistraee's name let alone suffer the presence of a priestess of the Seldarine.

Ardulace returned her cool greeting with a polite bow. "Mayhaps that is so, but to do it here and now would be foolhardy. Besides the danger of the dragon, before leaving the house I glimpsed a band of ogres readying for battle. If we do not wish to meet them, we should be well away from here when the house returns. I also suspect that this may be our only chance to leave the area without being turned unknowingly about, as Chiron was before we entered."

Seluumiel nodded as she responded. "You speak soundly," the moon elf paused a moment and smirked, "Do you kill spiders?"

She watched for some reaction from Ardulace before turning and walking to the stirring child. The moon elf knelt down to face the boy. She took his face in her hands and smiled.

"It is good to see you awake my child," the moon elf spoke in soothing tones. "I am called Seluumiel. What shall we call you?"
