Love the backstory ideas guys, I'll try to get something up for Penelope/Xana too. Can't wait to read more.

I've posted Penelope's intro. I thought posting her Spanish conversations in Spanish might be a nice touch (I'll try to keep them simple), but if it's easier I'll post them in English. In the meantime let me know if you need translations.

Subject: In another part of Chicago...

It was late in the night when the woman who called herself Penelope Rosa walked down the Chicago streets. The heels of her black knee-high boots clicked on the concrete sidewalk with a slow steady rhythm and seemed to echo throughout the empty streets. She had not been called by her true name in a long time and in truth she had begun to think of herself as Penelope. Even so, a name did not change who she was, what she was - and that must remain hidden at all costs.

"¡Yo se que tù eres!"

Hearing the shrill cry Penelope's grey eyes darted towards the sound. A haggard old homeless woman stood before her screaming with a wild eyed frenzy and though her cries filled the night Penelope smiled when she saw her. She was known as Mami Fortuna by the locals and most thought her crazy, they were wrong. The old woman was a seer.

"¡Yo se que tù eres!" Mami Fortuna screamed again this time lifting a filthy hand to point at the beautiful woman approaching her in the dark.

Penelope brushed an olive skinned hand through her chestnut curls and smiled at Mami Fortuna as she passed her. A seer she might be, but she was wholly untrained in the sight and had barely a spark of the Gift. Penelope had been sure to learn as much the first time she saw the woman.

"Tù no sabes nada mija," she cooed to the crone in a mocking tone. "Què has visto con estos ojos."

Penelope turned the corner to the block she lived on leaving the old woman alone to contemplate whatever new vision would come to her. She climbed up the stairs to the front door of her building and fumbling with her keys opened the front door. It was a long walk up to her apartment but the privacy and view of the moon were worth it.

As usual the stairs creaked as Penelope climbed the four flights, but she ignored it and continued up. It was an old building and the rent was cheap, certain flaws were to be expected. Reaching the top floor she turned to her attic apartment and stopped dead.

A matrix of hair thin flows of essence surrounded the doorway pulsing with a subtle taint. Penelope narrowed her eyes, whoever had left the ward had taken care to hide it. Waving a hand in front of her she released white hot flows of pure essence that cut through the tainted ward with ease. She watched the tainted essence wither away before stepping forward to study the doorway.

On the floor she found an ornate medallion. Picking it up Penelope traced a finger along the inverted pentacle stopping at the small bloodstone set at its center. She stood grasping the jeweled pendant, it was time Mami Fortuna learned to use the sight.

Description
Ma'ia Il'luume is an elf of exotic beauty. Her coppery skin is smooth, and exquisite features are framed by a mane silvery curls. Large almond shaped eyes stare out mournfully into the world and shift in color from blues into greens. Soft leather armor and unbleached linen hug her lithe frame. Strands of earthen beads hang from her neck and bright pounded copper bracelets decorate her wrists. Ma'ia wears a lock of her daughter's hair bound to a cord hanging from her neck.

History
Before the great river Xara empties into the sea it cuts through the massive rainforest Iuvia. For more than one thousand miles Xara runs through the rainforest, the ebb and flow of it's waters have sculpted the architecture of the forest for ages uncounted. The Iuvia stands at the southern most point of the southern territories and has kept alive the most ancient and primal of beings. Beneath the forest canopy an ancient elven civilization has thrived. Calling themselves the The People of the Rain, the xenophobic elves of the Iuvia have lived out their long lives in complete harmony with the rhythms of the sun, the moon, and the river. For millennia the Xara and the Iuvia have shaped The People of the Rain, every part of their beings was of their forest home.

Ma'ia Il'luume was born to The People of the Rain, and like her mother before her was raised to walk the Way of the Rain. Like all of her people Ma'ia lived in harmony with the rhythms of the natural, but to walk the Way of the Rain is to go beyond harmony. The Rain Walkers gave themselves fully to the land, becoming one with it. The young elf grew up in communion with the life rhythms of the wild landscape. Ma'ia attuned herself to the land until its very rhythms became palpable to her touch.

The years passed and the elf child grew into an elf woman possessing a wild exotic beauty. After more than a century of communion Ma'ia had given herself fully to the Way of the Rain and was bestowed the title of Rain Walker. The Iuvia, the Xara, and the skies above became nothing more than an extension of herself.

And so Ma'ia lived as The People of the Rain had lived for countless ages, but while the elves may remain unchanged for millenia the rest of the world does not. It was not until the beginning of her third century that Ma'ia became truly aware of this truth.

While The People of the Rain communed with their rainforest home the outside world was turmoiled. The Noble Wars raged across the territories to the north. As the people of war torn lands starved many left their homes to follow the Xara. The refugees followed the great river to the borders of the Iuvia, a land still untouched by war.

For a time the bounty of the plains sustained them, but soon their numbers grew too great and they expanded in the Iuvia itself. As ancient trees were cut down to build houses and clear land for farming the native elves wailed in rage. A new war broke out along the border of trees and farms, a war that brought the notice of those in the west of the southern territiories. Seeing new lands to conquer the nobles sent armies to follow the river south.

Noble steel and arcane might clashed with wood, wind, and the wild power of the Iuvia. Land that had once been harmonious were left soaked with blood. The armies of the north pushed forward into the elven lands, but despite their great power they were no match for the ancient place magic of The People of the Rain and the Iuvia.

Within arboreal coverage Ma'ia sent the devastating fury of nature against the invaders. She became as ruthless as the forces she called in her defense of the sanctity of the Iuvia. Like the other Rain Walkers she was an unseen harbinger of death, driving back the invading humans. Yet passion would change all that, and on a day like any other it did.

As she walked alone through the trees Ma'ia came to a large human man. He stood tall with mahogany skin and bright war paints decorated his body. The wild elf hid and watched him for a time, fascinated. Instinctually she reached out with the magic of the land weaving a charm and simultaneously moving to him. Human and elf stared at one another as the charm took hold, and soon mahogany skin caressed copper skin. The throes of passion overtook them both and human and elf joined in the embrace of ecstasy. After a time the intoxication of passion left and Ma'ia leaped into the trees leaving the dark human alone on the forest floor.

Several moons passed and as the human invaders were turned back Ma'ia discovered she was with child. She carried a child with human blood, and it was not long before this was discovered by her people. The People of the Rain sent her away from her homeland for none of human blood could live among them. And so she left her ancestral home, left the Iuvia and left the Xara.

Ma'ia wandered the land, finally settling in a rural community of men and elves on the eastern border of the southern territories. She soon gave birth to a dark skinned girl, a half elven child she named Umei. For some years Ma'ia and her child lived in relative peace, but such things do not last in war torn lands.

In the aftermath of the noble wars skirmishes broke out from time to time, and such skirmishes found their way into the most rural of communities. It was a summer afternoon when two minor nobles clashed over rights to the border settlement, and their fighting spilled into the streets of the hamlet. A stray arrow took Umei in the chest, and Ma'ia wailed as the blood of her young daughter flowed onto her hands.

Journey
After Umei's burial Ma'ia left the town vowing to leave behind these war torn lands. Unable and unwilling to return to her homeland she sought passage out of the southern territories into lands untamed and untouched. The elf found herself offered employment by Adaf Adshead to escort cargo wagons out of the verdant valley and through the mountains. With the promise of freedom from the warring humans Ma'ia gladly accepted.

Throughout the sojourn through the mountains Ma'ia wrapped herself in mournful silence, the wounds of her daughters passing still burned her soul. The elf broke her silence only when necessary, preferring the silence of her thoughts and listening to the songs in the mountain winds. With her compatriots she faced down brigands, looters, and the vile humanoid vermin that hid in the mountain passage. Although the great power of the ancient place magic had left her with the Iuvia she found that the powers of nature still bent to her will. Ma'ia sent ravenous swarms of insects onto their attackers, and when magic and charms failed the sharp edge of her pounded copper blade or a flurry of arrows would suffice.

After twelve weeks of travel and battle the elf and her companions found themselves at their destination. Although Umei's passing still pained her deeply, the wild rhythms of a new land warmed her soul. If any of the other travelers went on into this untamed world she would join them, of that Ma'ia was certain.

The faery listened as Sonia described Linus and her violet eyes narrowed further and further. Memories of her vision of the burning Badon came to her. An elderly man had wandered the death littered streets bending before one group of corpses and then another. Those very corpses had risen and torn the flesh from their bodies. Had that man been Linus? Worse had he been the one to conjure the breath of Melios that had seared the city?

Each of the woman's answers brought more questions and though Nino needed to be stopped she dared not leave this place until she had learned all she could from Sonia. Selunine smiled at the witch and touched her shoulder.

"Tell me Sonia, what do you know of the conflagration of Badon? Was Linus there? Did Linus and the Black Fang have a hand in the bolt of light that dropped from the heavens and destroyed the city?"

"I would not recommend spreading out," Seluumiel began cooly. "Chiron is right the house seems able to confound our senses and twist space around itself. It would be best for us to stay close together lest one becomes lost in the fog."

The moon elf stepped closer to the woods as she spoke, "When last at the house we encountered none but Satya and the boy, but know this our presence was noticed. Let us hope that unnatural edifice does not anticipate our return."

"Before we enter again I would like to delve the magical aura of the place. It will take some time, but knowledge of what enchantments infuse the house will be vital. What say you all?"

The druid lifted her palms from the earth and nodded in satisfaction. Wherever they were was a harmonious place of the wild. She looked to her companions and smiled.

"I can sense no settlements nearby, only the natural harmony of the untouched wild. I know not where we are, nor what to do next, but for now let us rest and enjoy the peace of the wild."

Soronuume's eyes fell on the feast before them and she smiled. She was unsure which of her companions had procured it but she was certainly thankful. Helping herself to the fresh raw vegetables the elf smiled.

"I know not which of you brought this feast, but I offer you my thanks."

Subject: To Ganymede we go

Maru jumped from her seat as the shrill whistle of a tea kettle resonated through the observatory. She'd been staring at the M-87 Galaxy for several hours now and had certainly forgotten that she put on water for tea. That tea kettle had a particularly loud whistle that without fail shocked her our of her wits, but she probably wouldn't notice a quieter one. The diminutive woman gave herself a shake before walking over to the kettle and depressing the heat. She dropped a mix of leaves into a dark ceramic teapot and poured the liquid from the kettle over them watching as dried leaves unfurled in the boiling water. Most wouldn't be able to see that in full daylight let alone total darkness, but there were few details that her eyes missed.

Placing the lid on the teapot to let the liquid steep Maru returned to her work. A few pages scrawled with notes lay about her work station. She leaned over to peer into the massive telescope in her observatory. There floating in a sea of blackness was a distant cluster of white. Though tiny, separate motes of light could be made out and a fuzzy disturbance seemed to be growing out of the mass of white stars. This was the M-87. Maru continued to watch the celestial body heightening the focus and bringing the stars close and closer into view. Years of her life had been spent watching the M-87 Galaxy, she had even written her first paper on it and yet it still confounded her. It seemed to be reaching out towards the Milky Way. Whether intuition or premonition, she knew the M-87 would play a great role in the future of the Sol system.

A sudden buzzing in her pocket pulled her attention away from the heavens. Maru produced the vibrating unicomp and looked at the screen. There was an incoming communication over the same secure connection she used to contact Tìo Lucius. She clicked a small side button initiating contact and the image of a pretty young woman with unmistakeable face of a Bambi.

Maru looked at the woman aghast, she had spent a number of years in a prison camp for her research and now an anonymous Bambi contacted her over the very line she used to share her research. She was not pleased, and did not hide it well.

"¿Què es eso?" the words left her lips with a crack.

The Bambi exhaled and replied, "Greetings Maru Nenna, I am Bambi 592311 calling on behalf of Bazran, Grey, & Associates. Regretfully I must inform you of the passing of Lucius Blicker."

Maru sat down and stared blankly at the woman. Tìo was dead. They had spoken not more than a few days ago and now he was gone. Such was the was way of all things, but she would miss him. With a small sigh Maru closed her eyes offering a silent farewell to her old friend.

Bambi continued, "I offer you my deepest sympathies, he will be greatly missed. Your presence is requested on Ganymede for the reading of the will and the collection of your inheritance."

Maru's eyes snapped open at the mention of Ganymede. She'd spent enough time in a prison camp for one lifetime and the continued UEG military presence in the Jovian system made her wary. The little woman reached out instinctively scanning the surface of the Bambi's mind, searching for any sign of a UEG trap. Maru found none, resigning herself she sighed again and nodded for the woman to continue.

"I am sending you the details for this excursion in a separate message. I have been asked to inform you that acceptance of this inheritance will bring you closer to the object of your research than you ever dreamed possible, whatever that means." The Bambi shrugged and smiled.

Cocking her head to the side Maru nodded slowly. That could only mean one thing, the M-87 Galaxy. She might finally get a glimpse at what use Tìo had made of her research. Curiosity overtook her and she nodded again with renewed vigor.

"Thank you Bambi, I will be there as soon as I can," Maru gazed at the woman with large dark eyes glistening with anticipation.

Bambi 592311 simply smiled and nodded before her image faded from view leaving Maru to ponder just what would bring her closer to the M-87 Galaxy. The possibilities were endless. Her unicomp vibrated again with the Bambi's promised message. She read it quickly and smiled, travel to Ganymede had been arrange to depart from the DSO it two days time. Returning the device to her pocket Maru began to rummage around the observatory preparing for her journey. She had already forgotten about the tea.

"Um, mistress are you not an elf? Last time I was there... you were all elves in the misty isles. Has that changed? Or... I'm sorry, I should not be asking questions mistress. I know that you live for a long time... as you share my lineage, if not the exact same variety."

The faery woman listen carefully to Sonia's words pressing a white finger to her lips. It would seem that though there was knowledge of the Misty Isle they were still ignorant of what the Aos Si truly were. In truth her people were cousins to the elves of Shrie, but they were not one and the same. That Sonia had been to her homeland would have to be dealt with, but for now the secret of her fey heritage remained intact. She would have to talk further with the woman, but that conversation would have to be in private. For now the matter at hand had to be dealt with.

With glowing violet eyes Selunine gazed at the tattooed woman. She took a breath and reached out across the bond.

My pet of course I am an elf. I am as elven as you are. Yet there are few who still know of my homeland and so I needed to ask what you know of it. Someday soon we shall speak more of this, but for now we have other matters that concern us.

Selunine listened on as Sonia continued to answer her questions, there was much that had transpired and much that could not be allowed to pass. This Black Fang fascinated her, when there was time she would have to learn more. The witch continued, but as she went to speak of Ninian a shrill cry pierced the air.

"No! Selunine, please don't inquire about that!" Ninian's voice pierces the air like a shrill cry that drowns out Sonia. She then blushes and backs down. "I mean...don't...just don't. Please?"

At Ninian's first utterance Selunine snapped her head in her direction. Silver tresses flew about wildly as she quickly turned to face the other woman. Who was she? First the razor teeth and now this, what was she? Yet despite her own curiosity Selunine let it be, she had secrets of her own and if Ninian wished to keep secrets it was not her place to stand in the way. The fey nodded to Ninian before returning her attentions to her thrall.

Sonia stared at Ninian, "Would you like me to repeat what I just said, but was drowned out, mistress?"

Selunine smiled at the woman before responding aloud, "That will not be necessary. If Ninian wished to keep that secret then we shall let her do so. On to other matters, I have asked you of Linus and would know all you know of him."

"From what I can tell it seems we are in a land that follows the laws of nature much the same as Toril. That being said I intend to commune with the land to glean what I can."

She waited a moment before sitting cross legged on the ground. Laying her palms on the earth Soronuume began to intone softly. Slowly her awareness shifted, melding into the land. The druidic elf let herself attune with the land wholly and completely.

Subject: Maru Nenna

Maru Nenna inhaled deeply the sweet pungent aroma of the tea before sipping it slowly. It was the last from this pot and there was a slight bitterness to it from over-brewing, she liked it that way. Maru took another sip of the dark liquid before lowering the cup and returning her attention to her company.

Her mother, Yolanda, sat across from her with a cup of the same bitter tea. Yolanda was every bit the Maya with the reddish coppery skin, dark eyes, and straight black hair that differentiated them from the other astronomers. Her gray streaked hair was tightly pulled back and she wore a brightly colored striped shawl draped over her shoulders. Like all those on Pluto she wore a highly reflective black body suit which contrasted greatly with the brightly patterned blouse and skirt she wore over it.

Maru was the picture of her mother. She had the same red toned copper skin and dark almond shaped eyes. Just as her mother Maru had pulled back her long black hair, but hers as always was a bit disheveled rather than neatly held in a bun. She wore a long white tunic with colored embroidery and knee high red boots over her own black body suit.

She had tea with her mother nearly everyday. Staring at the cosmos such as she did often left her head in the proverbial clouds, but conversation and tea had a way of grounding the spirit. Maru looked forward to their visits and always left with a sense of belonging.

Lifting the tea cup to her lips once more Maru drained it of its contents and placed it on the table in front of her, as much as she enjoyed the visit there were things that did need her attention. "Haber mamà, hay que trabajar un poquito màs. Me voy entonces."

Yolanda looked at her and smiled, "Claro mi vida, tengo que hacer lo mismo. Te veo pronto mijita.Te quiero."

Maru returned her mother's smile with a "te quiero" before hugging her goodbye. She shot her mother one last smile before heading out towards her own space.

Without the windowed walls and ceilings of the observatory rooms the hallways were devoid of even starlight, but pitch darkness was no obstacle to her eyes and Maru made her way to her own observatory quickly. The M-87 Galaxy was in full view right now and she had every intention on compiling as much information on it as she could. It was like an itch in the back of her mind, but something was telling her that celestial body would have great impact on the future.

Being that the absence of Ardulace puts Seluumiel into more of the cleric's role I've been reevaluating her prepared spell list. A question comes to mind;
In the normal D&D 3.5 magic system clerics can cast cure/healing spells spontaneously. Does this ability cross over into your mana based magic system? ie would we assume that Seluumiel has cure/heal spells prepared in addition to her allotted prepared spells or would the healing spells take up one of the prepared spell slots?
Thanks!

The green elf listened to Devon speak of his magic. She cocked her head to the side and replied in a soothing voice, "Worry not Devon, we each have our own paths and each our own skills. That is why we work together."

With his attentions already diverted Devon made his way off with Brianna in search of game and kindling. Soronuume watched the pair depart and sighed. Humans so often confused her and she had generally kept her distance from them. Decades of war with humans had taught her to be wary of them and now she found herself riding with two. From what she knew of them they both were honorable, and she was finding herself growing fond of them. There was something so curious about their frenetic lives. Soronuume sighed again before turning her attention back to the rest of the party.

Lorae returned her gaze and after a moment the golden haired elf spoke, "Soronuume, we can stay near the hill but it would not be a good idea to camp on top of it, a fire up here will be like a beacon. There may be no people near here, but there may be things we do not want to draw the attention of. There in that small group of trees, partway to the river. It would give us shelter and there is grass all about it so that we can see all about us but others will have trouble seeing us."

Soronuume listened as Lorae spoke and nodded in agreement. Until they knew more of this place it would be wise to remain in anonymity. She turned her gaze to the group of trees that Lorae spoke of and nodded again.

"You are right Lorae, we do not want to draw attention to ourselves. The spot you have pointed out will do well, and the sooner we make camp the better. Once we have settled I will try to commune with this land to learn what I can. I think it would be best for us to gather as much information as possible before venturing beyond this area."

The green elf rides forward and then stops to turn and face Alexandria. Her amber eyes met the drow cleric's red eyes and she began in a soft tone, "What power I have is drawn wholly of the land. I can meld with the land and learn much of where we are, but the portal that brought us here was not born of nature. I cannot call the power to tell us what it was or why we are here. Might your goddess grant you some divination to aid in that end?"

A pang of guilt ran through her as she saw the woman's reaction to her anger, her wrath had not been necessary and would do little good. She took a deep breath and calmed her gaze, all would be well.

At her final questions the witch went silent for a time before looking up to answer her, "I have walked through the mists and the sands of the ivory towers."

As the words left Sonia's lips the faery caught her breath. This woman knew her for what she was, she and her ilk all did. They knew, they knew of the Aos Si. For ages untold the fey folk of the Misty Isle had remained hidden in secret, a people forgotten to time. Now that was over. In coming to this world had she unwittingly revealed the existence of her people? Had they already known of the Aos Si? Selunine sighed and shook her head. She no longer was here to save the mortals of Shrie, the survival of her own people was at stake. This Black Fang, whoever they were, she would destroy them.

"Mistress, have I failed you?" Sonia's frightened question pulled the Aos Si enchantress from her reverie.

Selunine looked to the witch and smiled, "No, you have not failed me. You have done well."

The fey picked up Sonia's discarded shirt and handed it to the woman. "You may dress yourself if you wish."

She watched the woman for a moment before turning to her companions. Trillion and Mora had gathered together and Selunine moved to join them. She glanced at each in turn standing silent for a moment.

"My friends, as you know we have a matter most grave on our hands. This woman, her child, and others have joined together to bring the drangons back to this world. It has been foreseen that their return will raze the lands of Shrie. As we speak Nino, the child, is on her way to raise the Shrine of the Ancients. Nino and her mother were to open the Shrine and use Ninian in a ritual to return the dragons to Shrie. Their leader, Linus, seeks to harness their ferocity to control the world."

Selunine pulls an odd shaped key from her belt, "Sonia gave this to me. It is part of a pair and Nino has it's twin. Only together will they grant entrance to the Shrine of the Ancients. Without this key Nino will be barred entrance to the Shrine, and without Ninian the ritual cannot be completed."

"I fear we cannot leave the matter be, she might well find another entrance to the Shrine. But should we go to stop her all that is needed for the ritual will be in the Shrine. Though time is of the essence we must proceed with caution and devise some plan to stop the child."

"I am going to speak with Sonia for awhile. This is bigger than the two we encountered today and I would know all I can. Perhaps with more information we will be able to stop what has been foreseen. Just give me some time to talk with her privately."

Selunine glanced at each of the women in turn once more before turning from them to lead Sonia aside. She and the witch walked a distance from the others, to a point where Selunine was sure that none of the others would be able to overhear them. The fey produced a gold coin from her pouch and pressed it into Sonia's palm. She reached out across the telepathic bond, once again with the returned seductive sweetness.

You have done well my pet, the coin is yours to keep. I will continue to give you treats if you continue your good behavior.

There is much that I must know, and you will answer all my questions with the utmost truthfulness. You will conceal nothing from me. All that you know must be open to me.

You say you know what I am. What am I? How do you know what I am? What do you know of my kind? How many know of our existence? How does your daughter know my name? Do you and your ilk have further knowledge of me beyond this meeting here?

You have told me that both Nino and yourself are members of the Black Fang. What is the Black Fang? What are your plans? What else beyond this ritual is to be done? Tell me all that you know of this.

Ninian is the key to returning dragons to Shrie, why? Tell me what you know of her.

You have spoken much of a man named Linus. Who is he? I would know all you know of him?

Selunine punctuated her questions with a telepathic caress and then stood back waiting for the coming answers.
