Subject: I go cleric hunting

Xana has gone off to get the clerics from their hidey hole. So that's covered. Is someone going to grab the other man?

Subject: Sure, heal the man if you want

"Just kill me."

Covered in a writhing carpet of spiders, the man's plea came out almost as a prayer to the gods the had forgotten him. Watching this, Xana released her spell. With fey magic no longer driving them forward, the spiders soon returned to the shadows, leaving the shaking man to breath another day.

It was not mercy that stayed her hand. Xana would have been happy to oblige his death wish, that of course was not an option here. With barrels of water destroyed and the captured priest likely dead, their mission had failed before it had begun. If they were to salvage anything, they needed information. The questioning, at the very least, would be entertaining.

"The spell is done and the spiders have fled. Someone bring him in here and see about healing him if we can."

With that she turned and made her way to the hidden clerics. Tully would help them salvage what they could of this disaster, she would see to that.

I think combat went fine, it's just the nature of the interface.

Trying to do this is chat sounds like a good idea in theory, but I know that I won't be able to commit to that. In other games I've played in, DM's have asked players to post actions in the Q&A for combat. This speeds things up quite a bit, but does inhibit combat RP on the player side. I've seen it work quite well though.

I'm absolutely interested in a game with less combat and more role play, stealth, manipulation, etc. That's more my style. Having encounters with smaller groups of enemies might do well to speed things along too, but I'm also interested in just seeing how the world grows around us.

The spiders overtook the lovers, swirling around them. Through their link, hunger and rage poured into Xana. As they pressed her forward so did she urge them on, dark fey magic twisting feral hunger into an unholy rage. She pressed them on.

Subject: Kiss of the Spiderwoman

Xana knew a moment of pure bliss as both the leader and her pet howled in pain one last time. The barrels of water exploded as they expired, water and the last of life's blood soaking the ground. A sigh escaped the dark faery's lips. In this world of acid rain the loss of any water was felt by all. To destroy it so stung. Still, with priests of their own they could replace that water and she still considered it a price worth paying to watch the wretched woman die. Xana only wished that time had allowed the woman to know the full embrace of the deplorable word. It was a pleasure she would have savored.

There would be time for such fantasies later, for now the battle raged on.

She felt magic. The sensation called to her with desire a mere heartbeat before its release. A flash of light answered its call and Xana turned to see the feral mage standing again, her hands outstretched with an arcane afterglow. That woman had cast her last spell, she would see to that.

A low moan escaped Xana's lips as she reached out into the shadows of the land. The witch felt them answer her chthonic call. Thousands of spindled legs crept out from the deep moving through the hidden places to their new prey. Sped by the fey magic they swarmed around the doomed lovers consumed with rage and hunger. Let them find their end in the spider's kiss.

((OOC: Summon Swarm - Spider Swarm. Targeting the area with the spellcaster and the man that healed her. Will adjust target if they move.))

So we need to take out the spell caster and heal Clary. Maybe Jacob could get to Clary fastest? The swordswoman is still blind so we should take advantage of that. while we still can.

I've got a nice little present for the mage and her lover.

War swirled around them, but a shrill voice rose up above the clamor. "That's enough. This fight is done. One more move and I'll break those barrels with a spell. One more attack on me or my crew and we will end the old man as well. You will not survive without your precious pure water!"

Xana sniffed in derision. Not long ago the wretched woman had been calling for all of their deaths, and now that her own life's blood she offered them clemency. The bravado was empty and irksome. The gall tugged at dangerous chords within the fey woman. In that moment, she wanted the woman dead. If it cost them the life of the bedraggled cleric or a barrel of water, Xana would gladly pay it.

A dangerous light danced in her eyes as her gaze focused on the blinded leader. Once again Xana spoke the deplorable word, sending into all terror of a thousand moonless nights. Soon her curse would sap away the woman's life just as it would her beastly pet.

((OOC: Power Word Pain on the Leader. Will continue to move to take cover behind the carts, unless that it no longer viable.))

Subject: Of Blindness and Swarms

Thanks for clarifying, Noz.

Before I post want to clarify; if I summon a swarm then it means it would only take up one square? So that means the swarm only attacks a single target (unless two take up the same square)? So it would be possible to summon and swarm into a square with an enemy target and not have it attack an ally in the adjacent square? Sorry, nothing is clear about size of the swarm summoned. I've seen 4 squares and one square.

I'm also hoping to get a little understanding about blindness and spell casting. This will affect a few of us, so good to get an understanding now that the situation presents us. The way I understood things was that blindness does not inhibit spell casting but does affect the ability to target. Target spells all become touch spells. Area affect spells can be cast as normal, but accuracy in where the spell is released is greatly affected. This is made worse if the blinded spell caster moves at all. So I know the general direction of the area I want to target and its distance from my body - I might be off by a bit but I can still get pretty close. However, if I move, the layout of the land (so to speak) has shifted as has my own orientation and sense of space. So, the ability to accurately identify and target anything distant from myself would be severely lowered. This is of course an interpretation and assumes a physical logic with spells, maybe there is another one. In this world, how are you interpreting the affects of blindness on spell casting? Thanks!

Will have my post up tonight/tomorrow. Thanks!

We'd have to see where the old cleric is to make a decision, but all of the baddies appear to be pretty occupied at the moment.

I doubt negotiations are possible at this point. The leader is only making the threat because they are in a threatened situation. Not saying she doesn't have something ready, but she's been blinded for 2 rounds and will continue to be blind. Her ability to target all of the water barrels seems low (if we think of accuracy, that's even lower).

I'd say we take a few of them out, then try and keep one alive for questions. We have clerics to replace the water, and going a night without it won't kill us. Let's see where the other cleric is.

Impulse: Entangle is not a concentration spell

Schnozzle: Wrote the Xana moved to take cover by the cart. Is there more than one? Or is she slowed too much by the entangle spell?
Also, what is your rule on swarms. Would it be a 4 square swarm? THANKS!

Subject: The Deplorable Word

The world exploded as she breathed the last word of her spell. Warped plants quivered to life, writhing around limbs as if to steal the life from them. It would have been a clever move had the magic been focused on the feral folk. It was not.

That sudden magic had been born from rage, and she could see clearly that although the boy from Pike was its source, he was as shocked as any. Somehow he had stumbled upon a bond with the land. From here on out he would have to be watched, closely.

For now though, the twisting vines served their purpose. As the battle raged around them, more than a few of the feral men found themselves ensnared. It would buy them time.

Taking care to keep free of the enspelled plants, Xana moved to take cover by the cart. All the while, her golden eyes surveyed the battle. It was the roaring changed creature that drew her attentions. Though blinded, it was still more dangerous than the rest.

Xana uttered a single, horrible word of power. It spun out before her to wrap the changed creature in its nightmare embrace. With it came pain, a horrid unending pain. Her lips twisted in a cruel smile as she lay her curse upon the creature. Blinded and now wracked with pain, she wondered what sort of nightmare its own mind would create.

With arrows flying and blades drawn, there was little doubt which direction this would take. The spilling of blood would be inevitable. Facing one another, the tension that arose had been pulled so taught that a single prick would make it burst.

Xana would be that needle. They were past negotiations and mediations, there was naught to do but act.

Snapping her fingers, Xana released the fey magic within. A brilliant, shimmering rainbow of dust blossomed above the feral men to fall upon them. Everything it touched remained covering in a scintillating skin of faerie dust.

Let them fight without sight.

Retreating deeper into the hull the fey woman smiled as she readied her next spell. Already her companions peeled away layers of secrecy, revealing morsels to be enjoyed later. Perhaps the journey would be a good one after all.

((OOC: Casts Glitterdust. She'll try and target as many of the feral men with as she can without hitting any in the party. Priority to hit the female mage or the changed, but looking to catch as many as possible.))

Thought updates were going to happen on Sunday's? Nothing is wrong on my end, just generally won't have time to post until the weekend.
As for character placement on the map, Xana probably would have moved back a bit when she saw them all coming, specially the big one with the teeth... Sure she's arrogant, but she's more than a bit concerned with self preservation.

Xana watched the pair of heroic fools saunter off to solve their mystery. If they wished to risk the rains, then let them. Even if they all went on the search, she would stay here. Running a hand through her dark curls, she glided to the center of the pavilion and crouched down by the fire pit.

The tingle of fey magic rose with, and she let it course through her, filling her with life. Breathing deeply, she then exhaled a bit of the enchantment into the kindling. A few embers began to glow, but nothing strong enough to start a fire. It usually took a few breaths to coax the flame to life. Once, she could have merely waved her hand to set a roaring blaze, but now even minor tricks such as this required real power. A century away from Faerie, amongst the stagnation of this world had depleted her. It was possible to regain what was lost, but forced to hid from the rains each night left little opportunity to do so. Would another century of banality cause her to fade away completely?

Xana sent the bitter thought out with another breath and was awarded with a wisp of smoke. A silent mockery of how far she had fallen.

As she took another breath to bring the campfire to life, Dax began to stomp loudly on the roof above. Pulling her attentions away from to unlit campfire, Xana looked in the direction of his thumping to seek its cause.

"We've got company!" He shouted, silencing any further conversation from the group. "South, two miles out and headed this way. Something big. Could be a group of somethings. People? Could be. Not on the road. They, or it, will get here before the rains hit."

His staccato alarm decided things. Xana abandoned the campfire and moved quickly to the southside of the pavilion and began to scan the flats before them for any signs of movement. Her keen fey senses would find anything trying to hide in the fading light. Dark fey magic crackled within begging for release. At the first sign of treachery she would strike. Questions could be asked later.

Xana watched as the wheezing cleric burst into the pavilion. The wild look in his eyes promised some bit of excitement and the gilded domino spoke of even more. Still, as much fun as the chaotic diversion might be the smell of rain had already begun to fill the air. To her mind there was little choice in the matter.

"Call young Garrat back, Tolly," she spoke, ignoring the others that already jumped to aid. "The rain is far too near for more than a trip there and back, if we even have that much time. We will investigate come sunrise. Whatever is there now will certainly be there in the morning."

Subject: And so we begin...

A final, low groan escaped her lips leaving her panting in the early morning hours. The meditation left her tingling with pleasure and she glistened with its sweat. She began each day the same, seeking a private moment of ecstasy in this dull banal world. It was a reminder of all she had lost, but she held onto it just the same.

Xana hated this world. The nightly deluge only served to underscore that hatred. It was an ugly place without a memory of the joy that once was here. Even the games of intrigue that once provided distraction felt empty among a broken people.

Moving from the bed, Xana made her way to the small mirror that decorated the wall of her humble quarters. Small though it was, the room was hers alone. A mixture of fear and awe had bought her a small piece of privacy in this world. In this small kingdom she laughed, cried, and wallowed in the muck of life. She did not care how it was won, it was hers.

Her reflection stared back at her with burning golden eyes. Within that fire was a loss deeper than any mortal soul knew. In the dark hours of midnight and again with the burning light of dawn it consumed her. Every night for a century, she had tried to return only to find the once familiar pathways gone. It seemed she would remain here for all time, like an ancient monument of a forgotten age. Would the world in time forget her too?

Sighing, Xana pressed a hand against the polished surface of the mirror and began to trace the lines of her face. At least she was still beautiful. That was something this world could not take from her. A tiny spark of magic came to life within her and began to clean away the morning sweat just as it smoothed the tangles in her dark curls. In this world water was too precious to draw a bath, so it would be magic that cleaned away the dirt of the day.

Just as it had been every morning in memory, Xana set the fey charm to tidy the small chamber before she left to face the day. It was likely to be as dull as every day before it.

***

Well played, Asher. Well played.

She never had any intention of joining a rescue mission. In this desperate world the salvation of one human life meant very little to her. The aging priest had certainly known this when he publicly announced her volunteering to join the miscreant party of heroes. Altruism was not in her nature, not unless it suited her own ends. Yet to deny such a public announcement would have left her in a rather untenable position. Sadly, they needed one another for survival. So she found herself escorting barrels of water and clerics to the village of Pike. At least the day would not be dull.

Nearly a days journey through the Serenity Flats brought them to the first pavilion. Introductions began and Xana quickly slipped into role of the benevolent witch, a brilliant smile lighting her face.

"Well met one and all, I am Xana walker of the Starlight Path. I pray that together we can bring some bit of salvation to the people of Pike."

Continuing to smile, she met the eyes of each of her companions as they awaited the coming night. Her smile even touched her eyes.
