I am willing to say that you were donning the armor and grabbing a sword while everyone else was organizing and moving the slaves up the ladder and out onto the roof since you hadn't posted that you were doing anything during that time.

Slave after slave scuttles across the roof and drops down into the alley behind the warehouse. Just over half of the slaves have made it, and the dancing lights spell is now beginning to dim.

Everything is going smoothly... and then the tension is too much. One of the children cries out. Instantly three arrows fly at the sound. One of the men steps forward, taking two if them in the chest before collapsing on the roof top bleeding and breathless. The third richochets off of the warehouse wall and skitters harmlessly off the roof.

(Daleel and Argent are on the ground with the slaves that have gotten down from the building, Thiferl is on the roof. Echo and Uthgar are still in the warehouse ushering the remaining slaves up the ladder and through the window.)

The three soldiers not possessing bows are already running, swords drawn, towards the side of the building... which leads to the alleyway and the escaping slaves.

Voltair returns to the group with nothing to report beyond a half mile of dry, dusty, boring wasteland. The riverbed is the only major feature int he area, and continues at least as far as he could see in all directions. Dead trees spot the landscape, as to rough patches of briars and thorns.
________________________________________________________________
The majority of the party is just drifting off to sleep it seems. Others are still in the world between dreams and waking. Avriel the summoner has been on watch for only a few short hours. She sits on one of the rocks, silently stroking her serpentine eidolon Yir'ess while lost in thoughts all her own. Movement catches her eye, but perhaps it is just the soft wind rustling some nearby briars...

A moment later a pair of glinting red eyes, filled with malice, hatred and... hunger fade into view, and then another. Human-like forms coalesce out of nothingness. After a moment recognition dawns on the half-elf and a yell of alar, goes up.

"Wake up! Wake up! Wraiths!!!"

(OOC: Currently everyone save Avriel and her eidolon are prone and flat-footed. One of the wraiths is looming above Iauran hungrily, while the other is near Avriel. Since there are only 2 enemies I'm not going to use a battle map for this one. Imagination and description can be more fun anyway... )

Commotion rose as the rider was brought near.

I've been a bit jumpy lately. he thought to himself as he slowly sheathed the dagger he didn't remember drawing. Perhaps this will work...

He turned to the youth and spoke, still suspicious but now willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. "I will go and try to rescue your sister and the others. I'm certain there are others here that will be willing to as well. However, it will take some time to organize, and we must see about this newcomer before we can depart. So calm yourself, pushing on this will only give rise to anger and make already willing souls less willing."

Without waiting for a response he hurried over to the not-quite-Templar. A flurry of thoughts and possibilities shot through his head as he gazed upon the main. A spy perhaps? Sent to gain their trust and expose them? His sharp eyes scoured the man for any telling sign. He was clean, and he was wounded. The halfling stepped forward out of the crowd, easily avoiding those guarding the newcomer.

"It would seem we are having quite an eventful night. First the refugees, and now you... a large man dressed, albeit haphazardly, as a Templar. But you don't have the look of arrogance they do. Your eyes do not show the ignorant pompousness so common in those that hunt us. Hmmm..."

He takes a few strides around the man, eyeing him the whole time.

"Jauris, might I make a suggestion? Is it possible for us to bind this man's wounds a bit, and then give him the opportunity to show his true colors? It seems I will be seeking out this Rain woman. I hope not to go alone, and with this newcomer I don't believe I'll have to. With your approval he can be healed and accompany me and any others who wish to go along in search of the prisoners. It would give him a chance to show where his loyalties lie, and likely dispel much of the doubt caused by his current dress and appearance. What say you Jauris?"

Quarlin has little issue acquiring the needed supplies. he returns in an hour with 2 weeks worth of rations for each person and two quivers of arrows for each of the party's archers as well as the soap that Kyara requested. He did have to hire a porter to help carry it all, but he was careful. A little over a block away he paid the man and had him deposit what he was carrying beside a nearby building, then picked up everything and carried it the remainder of the distance himself.

Everyone in the group is a bit on edge due to current circumstances. As such, when the pattern of knocks came at the door (three quick and two slow) more than one person jumped a little bit, but pride kept anyone from mentioning it.

Now, only a single hour remains before the party is due at the gate. Those that remained behind had been discussing possible options (I assume). All that remained was to solidify a plan and get to the gate before their window of opportunity passed.

Airion, who had been paranoid enough to be constantly looking out the window, had noticed a marked increase in guard activity over the past hour, though they are not organized patrols. It seems more like unorganized guardsmen running about individually for some unknown purpose.

(OOC: I will subtract the gold spent on supplies from the platinum left fot the group, and post a "Group Funds" section up on the Characters thread.)

That 222 gp was total after your payment.

As far as the disguise kit, use common sense. The intent (of course) is to give you a bonus to disguise skill checks due to having materials readily available. I would imagine that 8 lbs. would include a few wigs, several make-up variations and perhaps, as you said, some wax or putty-like substance for skin irregularities. I really don't want to itemize the entire contents of the kit. If something you want to do with it seems a little outside what 50 gp would get you I'll say something. Otherwise I will give youa bit of creative space with it.

(OOC: In order to keep this game going I'm going to start making my posts here instead of via PM to Shield. Even though I am seperated from the group.)

Rath'sharr creeps across the roof tops to one across the street from where the rest of the party just entered. He could not see the group itself, but he had a good view of the surrounding area. From the shadows he searched for other observers and anyone amongst the crowd who seemed out of place.

While doing this he was cycling through possible culprits in his mind. Goblins were a possibility. They tended to live in forest caves when not enslaved by drow. Or perhaps kobolds. They were small and cunning enough to go unnoticed, particularly by humans.

He didn't care as to their motivations. They were the prey. It was that simple.

I am assuming Voltaire is being sent out at the end of Day 2. Is this correct or did you intend to send him out on day 1?

I will (more or less) play Voltaire, though for minor things (like day to day activities and such) I don't mind you speaking for him. He can speak common so he can verbally report what, if anything, he sees.

With no answers forthcoming, the group finishes introductions, ensures the door is locked and settles in for the night. Not surprisingly it is the best night's sleep many of you have gotten in a rather long time. The soft linens and comfortable bed are a welcome change from prison cell and the hardness of the ground.

You awaken at mid-morning the following day (I'll let you guys decide who wakes up first, if it matters). Thankfully there were no patrols that came knocking, and no disturbances in the night. In fact, looking out of the shuttered windows, the city seems to be going on as it would any other day. The guards are no more plentiful than you would expect on an uneventful day. There is one strange thing about the morning. A small pouch is found sitting on the window sill in the kitchen. Within are 25 pieces of platinum and a small parchment on which is scrawled the words "Use it well."

Stopping to consider the events of the coming day, you realize the time. High moon is just over two hours away, and you must re-supply and make your way to the south gate. The next leg of your Journey is about to begin.

Because of the split time of the game update (covering the end of one day, the camp, and the beginning of the second day) I would ask that you delineate the days by marking them either with a horizontal line between the paragraphs, or a bold heading for day 1 and day 2 before the respective entry. Thanks.

And I will respond to anything I need to that people do in camp (on either night) throughout the week.

The group smartly moves to higher ground as the lightning strikes grow ever closer. Without light, travel is slow and you each have to take great care to ensure that you don't twist an ankle or trip on the uneven and rock strewn ground.

After what seems like hours of intense, strobe-like lightning strikes, deafening thunder, and a notable lack of any rain whatsoever the storm begins to clear. As the wind carries the clouds away the light of the moons and the stars can once again be seen gliding high in the twilight sky.

It is then that you realize how truly slow you have moved. Though it is difficult to determine distance in the wastelands, judging from the appearance of Illuria's great crystal pyramid you have travelled no further than a few miles since the storm began. Despite your fitness exhaustion is beginning to wear on you all. One can only keep their senses at such a level for so long after all.

(Assuming you don't wish to do a forced march, and you set up camp in the dry riverbed where you are less likely to be spotted at a distance...)

Gathering wood for a warming fire is done easily enough. The many dead and dried out trees scattered about do not hesitate to provide for you. One day has passed since you left the gates of Illuria. Celine moves ever further towards the horizon, and the deadline of your delivery grows ever closer.

(Feel free to post anything done or discussed in camp including watches, etc.)

________________________________________________________________

Day 2: Wastelands
(Assuming you are traveling via the riverbed to make better time...)

The hours pass as you travel ever eastward, seeing no sign yet of the end of the wasteland. Although, you all think to yourselves, for a place with such a dark and deadly reputation, in two days all you have encountered were a few harmless rodents and an incredibly impressive lightning storm. Perhaps you've just been lucky so far... With that thought in mind you refocus your senses, trained by years of adventuring to keep you alive.

At various points throughout the day you could swear you feel eyes on you. Gosk might se a shadow out of the corner of his eye, only to see nothing when he focuses on it. Several hours later Kitara hears the shuffling of feet, that may just have been the wind. Strangely, not once do any of you detect anything concrete. Yet you cannot shake this strange feeling...

By the end of the day you have covered many miles, and even the thick callouses on your feet ache a bit from your hike across the wastelands. The strange feeling you had has faded over the last few hours, and you begin to think that it may all have just been the legends of this place finding their way into your perception, but your adventuring lives have taught you far to much for you to fall into that assumption easily. Still, there have been no signs for over two hours.

The riverbed seems to continue meandering east in a relatively straight path leading off into the distance. Perhaps you can follow it all the wayout of the wastelands. It would make your trek that much easier if that were the case.

(At this point you have travelled for 8 hours. Any further travel would be considered a forced march. Feel free to decide what to do from here and set up camp, or whatever, as you see fit.)

Which is why it is so unfortunate that you want us to shoot you...

For the most part I have switched entirely over to Pathfinder, and have actually published a campign setting (Realms of Twilight) under that rules set. As Shades said, Paizo has done a really good jump on it, in my humble opinion.

So, if you have any questions about it don't hesitate to ask via post or PM.

Now that all that is said... I suppose I'll have to fulfill your request...

*aims for a moment*

Just kidding. Welcome to our widely varied insanity and creative geekdom.

The noise of a small crowd rises within the warehouse. The branded slaves grow nervous, not knowing its source. Fear begins to creep into their expressions, where until now lay only resignation.

Outside it seems the soldiers have been fooled... at least to some degree. Half of them move towards the main door of the warehouse, and out of sight from where the halfling and Echo crouch hidden on the roof.

The others stand, their gaze still searching for deception and intruders.

"Inuit sak tu nalis.." Echo whispers the words under his breath as he gestures to the far end of the roof. A being of light slowly fades into being, flashing brilliantly in the moonlight. Instantly three arrows fly at the figure, slicing through it with uncanny accuracy. In the same motion three more arrows are fitted to the bows of the archers. For the moment the figure seems unharmed and unresponding to the assault.

For the moment, all eyes seem drawn either to the warehouse's main door, or to the glowing figure at the end of the roof. The soldiers below are muttering among themselves, too silently for you to hear. But it seems they are suspicious of the glowing figure. You get the feeling that it will not distract them for long...

The normally cheerful halfling strides quickly over to the out-of-sorts youth.

He speaks calmly, but with threatening seriousness in his low tones. "How would she know of a cure? Others have searched for a long time. This is not something to get the others riled up about. Their hope hangs by a thread as it is. If you are lying about this, and it is merely a selfish attempt to save your sister, yourwelcome here will be swiftly worn out." Looking at the others gazing in on the conversation. "And likely your life may be stopping a bit short of old age. Hope is a deadly dangerous thing in these times. Now, with that in mind, is what you say true?"

Koriss eyes the youth with a penetrating gaze, attempting to detect any sign of dishonesty or disception.

The disorienting effect of the flashing aside, it is generally too dark for low-light vision. Darkvision is relatively unaffected (save for the bright flashes that make you take a moment for your eyes to readjust periodically.

With amazing efficiency you all manage to shove enough crates against the doors to block them off. At least for the moment. The main rolling rolling door at the front of the warehouse was a bit more difficult. A few of the larger crates will block it for a bit, but any strong fellow might be able to force the door open.

Meanwhile, Argent manages to unbolt one of the ladders and move it over to near the window Skit entered through. Almost half of the slaves are now waiting on the upper level, spread out and anxious.

As skit slithers out of the vent window and onto the roof, the scene before him stops him cold. Almost a dozen soldiers, all wearing the same crest stand in two disciplined lines facing the warehouse. They are clad in blue and black leather armor, and they carry well-made longswords. Half of them seem to have bows as well, and quivers of blue-fletched arrows riding high on their backs. It seems, no expense was spared in outfitting these men.

The streets are all but clear, and a tense silence hangs over the area. The six men in the back line take two simultaneous steps back and fluidly unsling their bows. As one the noch arrows and aim in the general direction of the warehouse. Thus far it seems they have not spotted the halfling, nor are they yet trying to enter the warehouse itself.

The one thing that seems odd to the little one is that no obvious commander can be seen. All of the soldiers seem outfitted the same. They act without orders, but with the discipline born of harsh training. No one seems to be giving them any manner of commands or orders.

(OOC: I apologize for this being late, I was waiting...)

The questions spring from many mouths, the answers seem too few. A stranger enters from one of the bedrooms, making more queries that only add to the confusion of the group. The half-orc who has finally given his name only stutters a moment as the questions come at him in quick succession. Frustration and confusion grow in the silence that answers.

"Perhaps I can provide some semblance of truth in this web of deceit and confusion."

A figure, shrouded in black peels himself from the shadows in the corner of the room.

"I am he who had you freed. The money paid to these newcomers is not of your concern my lost little cleric. There are greater powers at work here. Powers well beyond all of you, and even beyond myself."

Despite your attempts to determine any defining feature, the shadows seem to writhe and dance around the figure as he stands, almost motionless. Even his voice seems to waver and dance despite its strength, concealing the exact tones.

"You are all servants here, and though I am stating what should be obvious, you have no concept of what you have been caught up in. It should also be obvious that you cannot stay in this city. Your former employer was paid to distort his story, and your nemesis still has his part to play. What you must do now is leave. You must leave this city and make your way into the forest to the west, back the way you came. Do not cross into Illurian lands, for your duties are such that they will find you. Should that happen, I can promise that they will not be merciful, nor will your death be painless."

His form begins to waver even more as he moves back into the shadows of the room.

"Find Shadethorn Mansion in the depths of the forest, four days west, southwest of here, along the river. There you will find more of the answers you seek, and a guide to show you the path you must follow."

His form fades completely into darkness. After a moment, you exhale, not even realizing you had been holding your breath. The power of this figure was incredible, and he speaks of something even stronger than he. It seems that someone in a high place has plans for you... all of you.

A piece of parchment now sits on the table in the kitchen. weighted down by a small silver symbol. It is a jawless skull encircled by glowing red runes. As the moments pass the glow fades, though the runes remain, etched into the face of the symbol.

The parchment reads as follows:

"All has been arranged for His glory. Rest this day and recover your strength. In one night's time, when Celine and Nalus (two of the moons) both set on the horizon you must leave through the city's south gate. Here is where your true journey begins.

May the Shadows protect you."

The gates close behind you and the locks fall into place with a resounding bang. The wastelands of Illuria now lie before you. These lands have been a source of fear since the founding of the Empire. It is said to be inhabited by wraiths, shadows and the savage little creatures known as nightlings. The number of Illurian citizens that have fallen to the wastelands before the Emperor completed the construction of the pyramid-totems is beyond counting.

A few miles distant, down the winding road, you see the closest of those very pyramids, standing its eternal vigil over the roads, and protecting travelers from the undead creatures of the wastes.

The white moon, Celine, rides high in the sky above you, floating amidst the stars. It is a constant reminder of the urgency of your journey and the weight of many lives on your shoulders.

Day 1: Wastelands
You have found the dry bed of a river that once flowed through the wastes. No water flows now, but it is more level and less plagued by cracks and broken areas than the majority of the land you have found. About half way through the day you spot thunderclouds on the horizon. Over the next hour those very clouds glide over the wastes, darkening the skies and blocking the light of the moons. Without a source of light for yourselves you are walking blind through the pitch black.

Lightning flashes through the clouds, followed by deafening thunder. Within moments the lightning intensifies and the frequency of the flashes increases to a dizzying array of light. The constantly flashing lightning and the brisk wind give the true feeling of a storm. The thunder makes hearing each other almost impossible short of shouting. The increased frequency of the lightning however, does provide some measure of light to move by. The angles of the shadows is a bit disorienting, slowing your journey or risking injury moving over the rough landscape. This is one storm that, thus far, seems bereft of rain.

(OOC: No further purchases can be made. The adventure is underway and you have officially entered the wastelands. Good luck.)
